RESUMO

With excellent energy resolution and ultralow-level radiogenic backgrounds, the high-purity germanium detectors in the Majorana Demonstrator enable searches for several classes of exotic dark matter (DM) models. In this work, we report new experimental limits on keV-scale sterile neutrino DM via the transition magnetic moment from conversion to active neutrinos ν_{s}→ν_{a}. We report new limits on fermionic dark matter absorption (χ+A→ν+A) and sub-GeV DM-nucleus 3→2 scattering (χ+χ+A→ϕ+A), and new exclusion limits for bosonic dark matter (axionlike particles and dark photons). These searches utilize the (1-100)-keV low-energy region of a 37.5-kg y exposure collected by the Demonstrator between May 2016 and November 2019 using a set of ^{76}Ge-enriched detectors whose surface exposure time was carefully controlled, resulting in extremely low levels of cosmogenic activation.

RESUMO

The Majorana Demonstrator searched for neutrinoless double-ß decay (0νßß) of ^{76}Ge using modular arrays of high-purity Ge detectors operated in vacuum cryostats in a low-background shield. The arrays operated with up to 40.4 kg of detectors (27.2 kg enriched to ∼88% in ^{76}Ge). From these measurements, the Demonstrator has accumulated 64.5 kg yr of enriched active exposure. With a world-leading energy resolution of 2.52 keV FWHM at the 2039 keV Q_{ßß} (0.12%), we set a half-life limit of 0νßß in ^{76}Ge at T_{1/2}>8.3×10^{25} yr (90% C.L.). This provides a range of upper limits on m_{ßß} of (113-269) meV (90% C.L.), depending on the choice of nuclear matrix elements.

RESUMO

^{180m}Ta is a rare nuclear isomer whose decay has never been observed. Its remarkably long lifetime surpasses the half-lives of all other known ß and electron capture decays due to the large K-spin differences and small energy differences between the isomeric and lower-energy states. Detecting its decay presents a significant experimental challenge but could shed light on neutrino-induced nucleosynthesis mechanisms, the nature of dark matter, and K-spin violation. For this study, we repurposed the Majorana Demonstrator, an experimental search for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of ^{76}Ge using an array of high-purity germanium detectors, to search for the decay of ^{180m}Ta. More than 17 kg, the largest amount of tantalum metal ever used for such a search, was installed within the ultralow-background detector array. In this Letter, we present results from the first year of Ta data taking and provide an updated limit for the ^{180m}Ta half-life on the different decay channels. With new limits up to 1.5×10^{19} yr, we improved existing limits by 1-2 orders of magnitude which are the most sensitive searches for a single ß and electron capture decay ever achieved. Over all channels, the decay can be excluded for T_{1/2}<0.29×10^{18} yr.

Asthma, rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis (AD) are interrelated clinical phenotypes that partly overlap in the human interactome. The concept of "one-airway-one-disease," coined over 20 years ago, is a simplistic approach of the links between upper- and lower-airway allergic diseases. With new data, it is time to reassess the concept. This article reviews (i) the clinical observations that led to Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA), (ii) new insights into polysensitization and multimorbidity, (iii) advances in mHealth for novel phenotype definitions, (iv) confirmation in canonical epidemiologic studies, (v) genomic findings, (vi) treatment approaches, and (vii) novel concepts on the onset of rhinitis and multimorbidity. One recent concept, bringing together upper- and lower-airway allergic diseases with skin, gut, and neuropsychiatric multimorbidities, is the "Epithelial Barrier Hypothesis." This review determined that the "one-airway-one-disease" concept does not always hold true and that several phenotypes of disease can be defined. These phenotypes include an extreme "allergic" (asthma) phenotype combining asthma, rhinitis, and conjunctivitis. Rhinitis alone and rhinitis and asthma multimorbidity represent two distinct diseases with the following differences: (i) genomic and transcriptomic background (Toll-Like Receptors and IL-17 for rhinitis alone as a local disease; IL-33 and IL-5 for allergic and non-allergic multimorbidity as a systemic disease), (ii) allergen sensitization patterns (mono- or pauci-sensitization versus polysensitization), (iii) severity of symptoms, and (iv) treatment response. In conclusion, rhinitis alone (local disease) and rhinitis with asthma multimorbidity (systemic disease) should be considered as two distinct diseases, possibly modulated by the microbiome, and may be a model for understanding the epidemics of chronic and autoimmune diseases.

RESUMO

The Majorana Demonstrator neutrinoless double-beta decay experiment comprises a 44 kg (30 kg enriched in ^{76}Ge) array of p-type, point-contact germanium detectors. With its unprecedented energy resolution and ultralow backgrounds, Majorana also searches for rare event signatures from beyond standard model physics in the low energy region below 100 keV. In this Letter, we test the continuous spontaneous localization (CSL) model, one of the mathematically well-motivated wave function collapse models aimed at solving the long-standing unresolved quantum mechanical measurement problem. While the CSL predicts the existence of a detectable radiation signature in the x-ray domain, we find no evidence of such radiation in the 19-100 keV range in a 37.5 kg-y enriched germanium exposure collected between December 31, 2015, and November 27, 2019, with the Demonstrator. We explored both the non-mass-proportional (n-m-p) and the mass-proportional (m-p) versions of the CSL with two different assumptions: that only the quasifree electrons can emit the x-ray radiation and that the nucleus can coherently emit an amplified radiation. In all cases, we set the most stringent upper limit to date for the white CSL model on the collapse rate, λ, providing a factor of 40-100 improvement in sensitivity over comparable searches. Our limit is the most stringent for large parts of the allowed parameter space. If the result is interpreted in terms of the Diòsi-Penrose gravitational wave function collapse model, the lower bound with a 95% confidence level is almost an order of magnitude improvement over the previous best limit.

RESUMO

Axions were originally proposed to explain the strong-CP problem in QCD. Through axion-photon coupling, the Sun could be a major source of axions, which could be measured in solid state detection experiments with enhancements due to coherent Primakoff-Bragg scattering. The Majorana Demonstrator experiment has searched for solar axions with a set of ^{76}Ge-enriched high purity germanium detectors using a 33 kg-yr exposure collected between January, 2017 and November, 2019. A temporal-energy analysis gives a new limit on the axion-photon coupling as g_{aγ}<1.45×10^{-9} GeV^{-1} (95% confidence level) for axions with mass up to 100 eV/c^{2}. This improves laboratory-based limits between about 1 eV/c^{2} and 100 eV/c^{2}.

New multi-reference, global ab initio potential energy surfaces (PESs) are reported for the interaction of Xe atoms with OH radicals in their ground X2Π and excited A2Σ+ states, together with the non-adiabatic couplings between them. The 2A' excited potential features a very deep well at the collinear Xe-OH configuration whose minimum corresponds to the avoided crossing with the 1A' PES. It is therefore expected that, as with collisions of Kr + OH(A), electronic quenching will play a major role in the dynamics, competing favorably with rotational energy transfer within the 2A' state. The surfaces and couplings are used in full three-state surface-hopping trajectory calculations, including roto-electronic couplings, to calculate integral cross sections for electronic quenching and collisional removal. Experimental cross sections, measured using Zeeman quantum beat spectroscopy, are also presented here for comparison with these calculations. Unlike similar previous work on the collisions of OH(A) with Kr, the surface-hopping calculations are only able to account qualitatively for the experimentally observed electronic quenching cross sections, with those calculated being around a factor of two smaller than the experimental ones. However, the predicted total depopulation of the initial rovibrational state of OH(A) (quenching plus rotational energy transfer) agrees well with the experimental results. Possible reasons for the discrepancies are discussed in detail.

Simultaneous and individual enumeration of Salmonella, Shigella and Listeria monocytogenes was compared on inoculated Roma tomatoes and Serrano peppers using an Most Probable Number (MPN) technique. Samples consisting of tomatoes (4 units) or peppers (8 units) were individually inoculated with a cocktail of three strains of Salmonella, Shigella or L. monocytogenes, or by simultaneous inoculation of three strains of each pathogen, at low (1.2-1.7 log CFU/sample) and high (2.2-2.7 log CFU/sample) inocula. Samples were analyzed by an MPN technique using universal pre-enrichment (UP) broth at 35 °C for 24 ±â€¯2 h. The UP tubes from each MPN series were transferred to enrichment and plating media following adequate conventional methods for isolating each pathogen. Data were analyzed using multifactorial analysis of variance (p < 0.05) and LSD multiple rang test. There were differences (p < 0.05) in recovery of simultaneous and individual bacteria inoculated (individual > simultaneous), type of bacteria (Salmonella > Shigella and L. monocytogenes), type of sample (UP broth > pepper and tomato), and inoculum level (high > low). The MPN technique was effective for Salmonella on both commodities. Shigella counts were higher on tomatoes compared to peppers, (p < 0.05), and for L. monocytogenes on peppers (p < 0.05).

We present a new trajectory surface hopping study of the rotational energy transfer and collisional quenching of electronically excited OH(A) radicals by Kr. The trajectory surface hopping calculations include both electronic coupling between the excited 2(2)A' and ground 1(2)A' electronic states, as well as Renner-Teller and Coriolis roto-electronic couplings between the 1(2)A' and 1(2)A″, and the 2(2)A' and 1(2)A″ electronic states, respectively. The new calculations are shown to lead to a noticeable improvement in the agreement between theory and experiment in this system, particularly with respect to the OH(X) rotational and Λ-doublet quantum state populations, compared with a simpler two-state treatment, which only included the electronic coupling between the 2(2)A' and 1(2)A' states. Discrepancies between the predictions of theory and experiment do however remain, and could arise either due to errors in the potential energy surfaces and couplings employed, or due to the limitations in the classical treatment of non-adiabatic effects.

We have performed a dynamical study of the endothermic and barrierless C(+) + H2((1)Σg(+)) → CH(+)((1)Σg(+)) + H reaction for different initial rotational states of the H2(v = 0) and H2(v = 1) manifolds. The calculations have been carried out using quasiclassical trajectories and the Gaussian binning methodology on a recent potential energy surface [R. Warmbier and R. Schneider, Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2011, 13, 10285]. Both state-selected integral cross sections as a function of the collision energy and rate coefficients, kv,j(T), have been determined. We show that rotational excitation of the reactants is as effective as vibrational excitation when it comes to increasing the reactivity, and that both types of excitation could contribute to explain the unexpectedly high abundance of CH(+) in the interstellar media. Such an increase in reactivity takes place by suppressing the reaction threshold when the internal energy is sufficient to overcome the endothermicity. Whenever this is the case, the excitation functions at collision energies Ecoll ≤ 0.1 eV display a ∝E(-1/2)coll dependence. However, the absolute values of the state selected kv=1(T) are one order of magnitude below the Langevin model predictions. The disagreement between the approximately derived experimental rate coefficients for v = 1 and those calculated by this and previous theoretical treatments is due to the neglect of the effect of the rotational excitation in the derivation of the former. In spite of the deep well present in the potential energy surface, the reaction does not show a statistical behaviour.

Quantum beat spectroscopy has been used to measure rate coefficients at 300 K for collisional depolarization for NO(A (2)Σ(+)) and OH(A (2)Σ(+)) with krypton. Elastic depolarization rate coefficients have also been determined for OH(A) + Kr, and shown to make a much more significant contribution to the total depolarization rate than for NO(A) + Kr. While the experimental data for NO(A) + Kr are in excellent agreement with single surface quasiclassical trajectory (QCT) calculations carried out on the upper 2A(') potential energy surface, the equivalent QCT and quantum mechanical calculations cannot account for the experimental results for OH(A) + Kr collisions, particularly at low N. This disagreement is due to the presence of competing electronic quenching at low N, which requires a multi-surface, non-adiabatic treatment. Somewhat improved agreement with experiment is obtained by means of trajectory surface hopping calculations that include non-adiabatic coupling between the ground 1A(') and excited 2A(') states of OH(X/A) + Kr, although the theoretical depolarization cross sections still significantly overestimate those obtained experimentally.

Golimumab is a fully human anti-tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α monoclonal antibody approved for use in the treatment of active rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. Psoriasis induced by treatment with anti-TNF drugs is well documented, but to our knowledge, the development of clinical features of psoriasiform exfoliative erythroderma during treatment with golimumab has not been previously described.

Entropy production is the hallmark of nonequilibrium physics, quantifying irreversibility, dissipation, and the efficiency of energy transduction processes. Despite many efforts, its measurement at the nanoscale remains challenging. We introduce a variance sum rule (VSR) for displacement and force variances that permits us to measure the entropy production rate σ in nonequilibrium steady states. We first illustrate it for directly measurable forces, such as an active Brownian particle in an optical trap. We then apply the VSR to flickering experiments in human red blood cells. We find that σ is spatially heterogeneous with a finite correlation length, and its average value agrees with calorimetry measurements. The VSR paves the way to derive σ using force spectroscopy and time-resolved imaging in living and active matter.

The reduction of oxygen increases pH in the surroundings of an electrode. A theoretical model estimates the steady-state pH profile from the surface of the electrode up to the bulk solution. A very simple formula predicts that, in non-deaerated solutions, for bulk pH-values between 4.0 and 10.0, the corresponding surface pH could be as high as 10.3, regardless of the thickness of the diffusion layer and composition of the sample (except if it has a buffering capacity). For bulk pH lower than 3.0 or higher than 10, pH increases are negligible. Less steep pH-profiles are obtained using buffers (such as MOPS 0.01 M or MES 0.01 M). The change in surface pH modifies the local speciation and hinders the standard interpretation of voltammetric responses. The electroanalytical technique Absence of Gradients and Nernstian Equilibrium Stripping (AGNES), implemented with Screen Printed Electrodes (SPE), provides experimental insights into this phenomenon. AGNES probes the free metal concentration at the electrode surface, from which the surface pH can be estimated for systems of known composition. These estimations agree with the theoretical model for the assayed systems. Additionally, the quantification of the bulk free Zn(2+) and Cd(2+) concentrations with specific modifications of AGNES for non-purged synthetic solutions is discussed. In general, more accurate determinations of the bulk free metal concentrations in non-purged solutions are expected: (i) when the calibration is performed in a medium where the pH increase induces similar changes in the surface free metal concentration and in the sample solution and (ii) when the system is more buffered.

From a kinetics standpoint, reactive molecular collisions are the building blocks of the mechanisms of chemical reactions. In contrast, a dynamics standpoint reveals molecular collisions to have their own internal mechanisms, which are not mere theoretical abstractions: through suitable preparation of the reactants internal and stereochemical states, features of the mechanisms of a reactive molecular collision can be made evident and used as "handles" to control the reaction outcome. Using time-independent quantum dynamical calculations, we demonstrate this for the Br + H2(v = 0-1, j = 2) → H + HBr reaction in the 1.0-1.6 eV range of total energies. Despite its pronounced effect on reactivity, which is in agreement with the predictions from Polanyi rules, reactant vibration is found to have little effect on the mechanism of this endoergic, late-barrier reaction. Analysis of the correlations between directional reaction properties shows that the collision stereochemistry strongly depends on the total energy, but not on how this energy is partitioned between reactant translation and vibration. The stereodynamical preferences implied by the collision mechanisms determine how and to what extent one can control the reaction. Regarding the overall reaction, the extent of control is found to be large near the reaction threshold but not when the total energy is high. Regarding state-to-state reactions, the effect of reactant stereochemistry on the product rotational state distribution is found to be nontrivial and energy dependent.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether the addition of enfuvirtide to standard highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) could confer immunovirological benefits in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected very late presenters. The current study is an open comparative therapeutic trial of standard protease inhibitor (PI)-based HAART ± additional enfuvirtide in treatment-naïve deeply immunologically impaired HIV-positive patients. METHODS: Very late presenters (CD4 <50/mm(3)), without tuberculosis and neoplasms, were alternatively allocated to two nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) and lopinavir/ritonavir without (control arm, CO) or with (ENF arm) enfuvirtide 90 mg bid. Enfuvirtide was administered until the achievement of viral load <50 copies/ml and for at least 24 weeks. The primary objective was the magnitude of CD4+ cell recovery at 6 months. HIV RNA was intensively monitored in the first month, and, thereafter, monthly, as for CD4+ cell count and percentage, clinical data, and plasma drug concentrations. RESULTS: Of 22 enrolled patients (11 per arm), 19 completed the study (10 in the ENF arm). Baseline CD4+ cell counts and % were comparable, with 20 CD4+/mm(3) (12-37) and a percentage of 3.3 (1.7-7.1) in the ENF arm, and 16 CD4+/mm(3) (9-29) and a percentage of 3.1 (2.3-3.8) in the CO arm, respectively. The baseline viral load was also comparable between the two arms, with 5.77 log10 (5.42-6) and 5.39 log10 (5.06-6) in the ENF and CO arms, respectively. Enfuvirtide recipients had higher CD4+ percentage at week 8 (7.6 vs. 3.6%, p = 0.02) and at week 24 (10.7 vs. 5.9%, p = 0.02), and a greater CD4+ increase at week 24 (207 vs. 134 cells/mm(3), p = 0.04), with 70% of enfuvirtide intakers versus 12.5% of controls who achieved a CD4+ cell count >200/mm(3) (p = 0.01). At 48 weeks, patients in the ENF arm had CD4+ cell counts higher than controls (251 vs. 153cells/mm(3), p = 0.04) and were also found to be faster in reaching a CD4 cell count over 200/mm(3): 18 (8-24) versus 48 (36-108) weeks (p = 0.01). Viral load decay at week 4 was greater in the ENF arm (-3 vs. -2.2 log, p = 0.04), while the proportion of patients with viral load <50 copies/ml at week 24 was comparable. CONCLUSIONS: In this pilot study, the addition of enfuvirtide to a lopinavir-based HAART was shown to be associated with a significantly faster and greater immunological recovery in newly discovered HIV-positive patients with very low CD4+ cell counts. Induction strategies using an enfuvirtide-based approach in such subjects warrant further investigation.

P-type point contact (PPC) HPGe detectors are a leading technology for rare event searches due to their excellent energy resolution, low thresholds, and multi-site event rejection capabilities. We have characterized a PPC detector's response to α particles incident on the sensitive passivated and p + surfaces, a previously poorly-understood source of background. The detector studied is identical to those in the Majorana Demonstrator experiment, a search for neutrinoless double-beta decay ( 0 ν ß ß ) in 76 Ge. α decays on most of the passivated surface exhibit significant energy loss due to charge trapping, with waveforms exhibiting a delayed charge recovery (DCR) signature caused by the slow collection of a fraction of the trapped charge. The DCR is found to be complementary to existing methods of α identification, reliably identifying α background events on the passivated surface of the detector. We demonstrate effective rejection of all surface α events (to within statistical uncertainty) with a loss of only 0.2% of bulk events by combining the DCR discriminator with previously-used methods. The DCR discriminator has been used to reduce the background rate in the 0 ν ß ß region of interest window by an order of magnitude in the Majorana Demonstrator  and will be used in the upcoming LEGEND-200 experiment.

The electroanalytical technique Absence of Gradients and Nernstian Equilibrium Stripping (AGNES) has been extended by applying stripping chronopotentiometry (SCP) as the re-oxidation stage in the determination of the free concentration of Zn(2+), Cd(2+) and Pb(2+). This new approach, called AGNES-SCP, has been implemented with screen-printed electrodes (SPE) and the standard Hanging Mercury Drop Electrode (HMDE). Clear advantages of this variant have been shown: (i) the easy resolution of the peaks of different metals present in mixtures and (ii) the sparing of blanks. A rigorous computation of the faradaic charge along the SCP stage takes into account the contribution of other oxidants, which can be efficiently measured at the end of the deposition stage of AGNES. The free Cd concentration determined in an oxalate solution at pH 6 with an HMDE as the working electrode agreed well with values obtained with a Cd Ion Selective Electrode. The free metal concentration measured using an SPE for the system Cd and nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) at pH = 4.8 also conformed well with Visual MINTEQ results.
