RESUMO

For white light-rendering research activities, interpretation by using colored emitting materials is an alternative approach. But there are issues in designing the white color emitting materials. Particularly, differences in thermal and decay properties of discrete red, green, and blue emitting materials led to the quest for the search of a single-phased material, able to emit primary colors for white light generation. The current study is an effort to design a simple, single-phase, and cost-effective material with the tunable emission of primary colors by a series of Mg1-xBaxAl2O4:Mn2+ nanopowders. Doping of manganese ion (Mn2+) in the presence of the larger barium cation (Ba2+) at tetrahedral-sites of the spinel magnesium aluminate (MgAl2O4) structure led to the creation of antisite defects. Doped samples were found to have lower bandgaps compared with MgAl2O4, and hybridization of 3d-orbitals of Mn2+ with O(2p), Mg(2s)/Al(2s3p) was found to be responsible for narrowing the bandgap. The distribution of cations at various sites at random results in a variety of electronic transitions between the valance band and oxygen vacancies as well as electron traps produced the antisite defects. The suggested compositions might be used in white light applications since they have three emission bands with centers at 516 nm (green), 464 nm (blue) and 622 nm (red) at an excitation wavelength of 380 nm. A detailed discussion to analyze the effects of the larger cationic radius of Ba2+ on the lattice strain, unit cell parameters, and cell volumes using X-ray diffraction analysis is presented.

RESUMO

Aspergillus flavus is a ubiquitous facultative pathogen that routinely infects important crops leading to formation of aflatoxins during crop development and after harvest. Corn and peanuts in warm and/or drought-prone regions are highly susceptible to aflatoxin contamination. Controlling aflatoxin using atoxigenic A. flavus is a widely adopted strategy. However, no A. flavus genotypes are currently approved for use in China. The current study aimed to select atoxigenic A. flavus endemic to Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region with potential as active ingredients of aflatoxin biocontrol products. A total of 204 A. flavus isolates from corn, peanuts, and field soil were evaluated for ability to produce the targeted mycotoxins. Overall, 57.3% could not produce aflatoxins while 17.15% were incapable of producing both aflatoxins and CPA. Atoxigenic germplasm endemic to Guangxi was highly diverse, yielding 8 different gene deletion patterns in the aflatoxin and CPA biosynthesis gene clusters ranging from no deletion to deletion of both clusters. Inoculation of corn and peanuts with both an aflatoxin producer and selected atoxigenic genotypes showed significant reduction (74 to 99%) in aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) formation compared with inoculation with the aflatoxin producer alone. Atoxigenic genotypes also efficiently degraded AFB1 (61%). Furthermore, atoxigenic isolates were also highly efficient at reducing aflatoxin concentrations even when present at lower concentrations than aflatoxin producers. The use of multiple atoxigenics was not always as effective as the use of a single atoxigenic. Effective atoxigenic genotypes of A. flavus with known mechanisms of atoxigenicity are demonstrated to be endemic to Southern China. These A. flavus may be utilized as active ingredients of biocontrol products without concern for detrimental impacts that may result from introduction of exotic fungi. Field efficacy trials in the agroecosystems of Southern China are needed to determine the extent to which such products may allow the production of safer food and feed.

RESUMO

Drinking water quality deteriorates rapidly due to anthropogenic activities and rapid population growth. These activities, in developing countries, will lead to water scarcity. In Pakistan, 70% of the population has no access to safe water, and people use canal water to drink. This study performed hydrochemical, hydrogeological, and cancer risk analyses on Tahsil Hasilpur, Bahawalpur, Pakistan. Thirteen tube wells were selected for groundwater and borehole log study. Twenty-two drinking water quality parameters were analyzed using standard methods and quality checks. The borehole data (2D and 3D) shows the abundance of sand (fine and coarse) with some uniformities, which changes the groundwater quality. The results of water quality parameters show that the concentration of TDS (2064-11,159 mg/L), Cl-1 (213-4917 mg/L), As+3 (0.048-0.158 mg/L), Pb+2 (1.294-1.673 mg/L), and Cd+2 (0.008-0.053 mg/L) were beyond guideline values. The statistical analysis showed that the parameters have a moderate to strong correlation (Pearson correlation), which may be due to the same origin (ANOVA). The principal component analysis and cluster analysis confirm the multiple sources of pollutants in the groundwater of the study area. The Piper, Durov, Stiff, and Scholler diagrams confirm that the groundwater system has an abundance of Ca+2 and Mg+2 with Cl-1. The Gibbs diagram showed that the groundwater is not saturated and tends to dissolve more minerals. The hazard quotient values are above 1.0, which indicates noncancer risk severity. The HQ trend was As+3 > Pb+2 > Cd+2 > Ni+2 > Cu+2 > Cr+2 > Zn+2 > Fe+2. The cancer risk values showed that 3-5 people/100 population were exposed to cancer risk. The trend of CR was As+3 > Cd+2 > Cr+2 > Pb+2 > Ni+2. The GIP mapping of pollutants showed that the concentration of pollutants near the canals was high compared to the locations away from the canal. The overall groundwater quality is alarming and needs immediate government attention.

RESUMO

With recent advancements in nanomedicines and their associated research with biological fields, their translation into clinically-applicable products is still below promises. Quantum dots (QDs) have received immense research attention and investment in the four decades since their discovery. We explored the extensive biomedical applications of QDs, viz. Bio-imaging, drug research, drug delivery, immune assays, biosensors, gene therapy, diagnostics, their toxic effects, and bio-compatibility. We unravelled the possibility of using emerging data-driven methodologies (bigdata, artificial intelligence, machine learning, high-throughput experimentation, computational automation) as excellent sources for time, space, and complexity optimization. We also discussed ongoing clinical trials, related challenges, and the technical aspects that should be considered to improve the clinical fate of QDs and promising future research directions.

RESUMO

Furan (C4H4O) is a naturally occurring organic compound. It develops as a result of the thermal processing of food and stimulates critical impairments in male reproductive tract. Eriodictyol (Etyol) is a natural dietary flavonoid possessing diverse pharmacological potentials. The recent investigation was proposed to ascertain the ameliorative potential of eriodictyol against furan-instigated reproductive dysfunctions. Male rats (n = 48) were classified into 4 groups: untreated/control, furan (10 mg/kg), furan+ eriodictyol (10 mg/kg + 20 mg/kg) and eriodictyol (20 mg/kg). At the 56th day of the trial, the protective effects of eriodictyol were evaluated by assessing various parameters. Results of the study revealed that eriodictyol attenuated furan-induced testicular toxicity in the biochemical profile by increasing catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD) along with glutathione reductase (GSR) activities, whereas reduced the reactive oxygen species (ROS) along with malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. It also restored the normal state of sperm motility, viability, the count of hypo-osmotic tail swelled sperm as well as epididymal sperm number along with reduced sperm anomalies (morphological) tail, mid-piece and head. Furthermore, it elevated the decreased levels of luteinizing hormone (LH), plasma testosterone and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) as well steroidogenic enzymes (17ß-HSD, StAR protein & 3ß-HSD) and testicular anti-apoptotic marker (Bcl-2) expression, whereas, down-regulating apoptotic markers (Bax & Caspase-3) expression. Eriodictyol treatment also effectively mitigated the histopathological damages. The outcomes of the current study provide fundamental insights into the ameliorative potential of eriodictyol against furan-instigated testicular toxicity.

RESUMO

Rheumatoid arthritis restricts the physical ability of patients and increases the disease burden; therefore, research has always been focused on evaluating better therapeutic options. The present research aimed to design Continentalic acid (CA)-loaded transfersomes (CA-TF) embedded in Carbopol gel containing permeation enhancer (PE) for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. CA-TF was developed via a modified thin film hydration method and incorporated into Carbopol 934 gel containing Eucalyptus oil (EO) as PE. The fabricated CA-TF showed particle size of < 140 nm with spherical geometry, optimal encapsulation efficiency (EE), and sustained drug release pattern. CA-TF-gel along with PE (CA-TF-PE-gel) showed better ex vivo skin penetration than plain CA gel and CA-TF-gel without PE. In vivo evaluation supported improved therapeutic outcomes of CA-TF-PE-gel in terms of behavioral findings, arthritic index, and histological findings whereas biochemical assays and pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and IL-1ß) showed a significant decrease in their levels. Furthermore, immunohistochemistry assay for Nrf2 and HO-1 signaling pathways showed significant improvement in the expression of the Nrf2, and HO-1 proteins to depict improvement in arthritic condition in the animal model. CA-TF-PE-gel significantly delivered CA to the diseased target site via a topical route with promising therapeutic outcomes displayed in the CFA-induced arthritic model.

RESUMO

The use of medicinal plants for fertility regulation has been prevalent worldwide for many centuries. They possess natural substances having antiandrogenic properties and can be used as source of contraception. In the current study, methanolic leaf extract of Hedera nepalensis was evaluated for antiandrogenic and antispermatogenic activity in adult male rats through various reproductive parameters. Experimental findings showed significantly increased oxidative stress with reduced antioxidant activity at highest dose regimens in both in vitro and in vivo studies. Increased ROS generation and lipid peroxidation lead to DNA damage in rat sperm. In vivo determination of sperm parameters exhibited notable reduction in sperm motility, viability and DSP in dose-treated animals. Histopathological observations revealed reduced epithelial height and wider lumen having less number of spermatozoa in high-dose-treated groups. Additionally, a marked decline noted in Testosterone concentration in all extract treated groups, while plasma LH and FSH levels only in high-dose-treated groups were noted. The findings of the current study conclude that methanolic leaf extract of H. nepalensis has the potential to disturb male fertility by generating oxidative stress and hormonal imbalance leading to histological alterations and sperm DNA damage.

RESUMO

In this paper, a self-threshold voltage (Vth) compensated Radio Frequency to Direct Current (RF-DC) converter operating at 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz is proposed for RF energy harvesting applications. The threshold voltage of the rectifying devices is compensated by the bias voltage generated by the auxiliary transistors and output DC voltage. The auxiliary transistors compensate the threshold voltage (Vth) of the PMOS rectifying device while the threshold voltage (Vth) of the NMOS rectifying device is compensated by the output DC voltage. The proposed RF-DC converter was implemented in 180 nm Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) technology. The experimental results show that the proposed design achieves better performance at both 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz frequencies in terms of PCE, output voltage, sensitivity, and effective area. The peak power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 38.5% at -12 dBm across a 1 MΩ load for 900 MHz frequency was achieved. Similarly, for 2.4 GHz frequency, the proposed circuit achieves a peak PCE of 26.5% at -6 dBm across a 1 MΩ load. The proposed RF-DC converter circuit shows a sensitivity of -20 dBm across a 1 MΩ load and produces a 1 V output DC voltage.

RESUMO

Chemical descriptors are numeric numbers that capture the whole graph structure and comprise a basic chemical structure. As a topological descriptor, it correlates with certain physical aspects in addition to its chemical representation of underlying chemical substances. In the modelling and design of any chemical network, the graph is important. A number of chemical indices have been developed in theoretical chemistry, including the Wiener index, the Randic index, and many others. In this paper, we look at the benzenoid networks and calculate the exact topological indices based on the degrees of the end vertices.

RESUMO

Ovarian cancer (OC) is one of the leading causes of gynaecological cancer mortality in women worldwide. If detected at an early stage (I, II), OC has a 90% 5-year survival rate; nevertheless, symptoms are often hidden, leading to late-stage (III, IV) diagnosis and a poor prognosis. The current diagnostic procedures, such as a pelvic exam, transvaginal ultrasound, CA-125 blood tests, serum HE4 tests and multivariate index assays (MIA), are insufficient. Sadly, surgery is frequently required to confirm a positive diagnosis. Therefore, there has been an increased interest in different biomarkers using a non-invasive test as a tool for the earlier diagnosis of OC to resolve the need for precise and non-invasive diagnostic methods. This review article aims to investigate how biomarkers influence early OC detection and to emphasise the role of using a combination of serum biomarkers panel rather than a single biomarker. In addition, this review provides insights into the current serum biomarkers, urine biomarkers and other emerging biomarkers in the early detection of OC for better specificity and sensitivity and to improve the overall survival (OS) rate.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the perceptions about traditional massage and its modified techniques among clinicians and families of the patients with spastic cerebral palsy. METHODS: The qualitative, cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2019 to August 2020 in Sialkot, Pakistan, after approval from the ethics review committee of Riphah College of Rehabilitation Sciences, Islamabad, and comprised neuro paediatricians and paediatricians in Group A, parents of children with spastic cerebral palsy aged 8-15 years in Group B, and musculoskeletal physiotherapists and orthopaedic manual physical therapists in Group C. The professionals in groups A and C had a minimum of 5-year paediatric experience in government and teaching hospitals. Data was collected using a semi-structured pilot-tested questionnaire. Qualitative approach and thematic code analysis was used to analyse the collected data. RESULTS: Of the 26 subjects, 10(38.5%) were in Group A, 8(30.7%) in Group B and 8(30.7%) in Group C. Overall, there were 16(61.4%) males and 10(38.5%) females. Among the professionals, experience ranged 5-38 years in Group A, and 5-9 years in Group C. The identified themes were reforms in recommendations, and application of massage techniques, with the participants overwhelmingly favouring termination markers to prevent increase in hypertonicity in spastic cerebral palsy. CONCLUSIONS: Termination markers of massage should be considered in interventions to improve outcomes in children with spastic cerebral palsy.

RESUMO

A low power 12-bit, 20 MS/s asynchronously controlled successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) to be used in wireless access for vehicular environment (WAVE) intelligent transportation system (ITS) sensor based application is presented in this paper. To optimize the architecture with respect to power consumption and performance, several techniques are proposed. A switching method which employs the common mode charge recovery (CMCR) switching process is presented for capacitive digital-to-analog converter (CDAC) part to lower the switching energy. The switching technique proposed in our work consumes 56.3% less energy in comparison with conventional CMCR switching method. For high speed operation with low power consumption and to overcome the kick back issue in the comparator part, a mutated dynamic-latch comparator with cascode is implemented. In addition, to optimize the flexibility relating to the performance of logic part, an asynchronous topology is employed. The structure is fabricated in 65 nm CMOS process technology with an active area of 0.14 mm2. With a sampling frequency of 20 MS/s, the proposed architecture attains signal-to-noise distortion ratio (SNDR) of 65.44 dB at Nyquist frequency while consuming only 472.2 µW with 1 V power supply.

RESUMO

The novel coronavirus disease, caused by severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), rapidly spreading around the world, poses a major threat to the global public health. Herein, we demonstrated the binding mechanism of PF-07321332, α-ketoamide, lopinavir, and ritonavir to the coronavirus 3-chymotrypsin-like-protease (3CLpro) by means of docking and molecular dynamic (MD) simulations. The analysis of MD trajectories of 3CLpro with PF-07321332, α-ketoamide, lopinavir, and ritonavir revealed that 3CLpro-PF-07321332 and 3CLpro-α-ketoamide complexes remained stable compared with 3CLpro-ritonavir and 3CLpro-lopinavir. Investigating the dynamic behavior of ligand-protein interaction, ligands PF-07321332 and α-ketoamide showed stronger bonding via making interactions with catalytic dyad residues His41-Cys145 of 3CLpro. Lopinavir and ritonavir were unable to disrupt the catalytic dyad, as illustrated by increased bond length during the MD simulation. To decipher the ligand binding mode and affinity, ligand interactions with SARS-CoV-2 proteases and binding energy were calculated. The binding energy of the bespoke antiviral PF-07321332 clinical candidate was two times higher than that of α-ketoamide and three times than that of lopinavir and ritonavir. Our study elucidated in detail the binding mechanism of the potent PF-07321332 to 3CLpro along with the low potency of lopinavir and ritonavir due to weak binding affinity demonstrated by the binding energy data. This study will be helpful for the development and optimization of more specific compounds to combat coronavirus disease.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU), a chemotherapeutic drug, has severe deteriorating effects on the intestine, leading to mucositis. Glycyrrhizic acid is a compound derived from a common herbal plant Glycyrrhiza glabra, with mucoprotective, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions, however, associated with poor pharmacokinetics. Owing to the remarkable therapeutic action of glycyrrhizic acid-loaded polymeric nanocarriers in inflammatory bowel disease, we explored their activity against 5-FU-induced intestinal mucositis in mice. Polymeric nanocarriers have proven to be efficient drug delivery vehicles for the long-term treatment of inflammatory diseases, but have not yet been explored for 5-FU-induced mucositis. Therefore, this study aimed to produce glycyrrhizic acid-loaded polylactic-co-glycolic acid (GA-PLGA) nanoparticles to evaluate their protective and therapeutic effects in a 5-FU-induced mucositis model. METHODS: GA-PLGA nanoparticles were prepared using a modified double emulsion method, physicochemically characterized, and tested for in vitro drug release. Thereafter, mucositis was induced by 5-FU (50 mg/kg; IP) administration to the mice for the first 3 days (day 0, 1, 2), and mice were treated orally with GA-PLGA nanoparticles for 7 days (day 0-6). RESULTS: GA-PLGA nanoparticles significantly reduced mucositis severity measured by body weight, diarrhea score, distress, and anorexia. Further, 5-FU induced intestinal histopathological damage, altered villi-crypt length, reduced goblet cell count, elevated pro-inflammatory mediators, and suppressed antioxidant enzymes, all of which were reversed by GA-PLGA nanoparticles. CONCLUSION: Morphological, behavioral, histological, and biochemical results suggested that GA-PLGA nanoparticles were efficient, biocompatible, targeted, and sustained release drug delivery nano-vehicle for enhanced mucoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects in 5-FU-induced intestinal mucositis.

RESUMO

Stroke, a neurological disorder, leads to long-term disability thereby greatly affecting gait and mobility. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effects of progressive resistance training in both acute and chronic stroke patients. A quasi interventional study was designed and 46 stroke patients were recruited through convenience sampling technique. Sample size was calculated using epi-tool. Patients who had cognitive problems, balance impairments and contractures were excluded from the study. The study was conducted from January to June 2018, at Rafsan Rehab & Research Centre, Peshawar. Progressive resistance exercises starting at 50 % of one repetition maximum (RM) were performed three days/week and for a total duration of nine weeks. Blind assessor measured readings at baseline and after nine weeks. Gait dynamic index (GDI), Six-Meter Walk Test (SMWT) and Five Times Sit-to-Stand (FTSTS) tools were used to collect the required data. The data was analysed at baseline and after nine weeks on SPSS-20. After nine weeks of intervention significant improvement was recorded in patients on GDI (p<0.001), SMWT score (P<0.001) and FTSTS (p<0.001). Progressive resistance training improves mobility limitations and gait in both acute and chronic stroke patients.

RESUMO

Healthcare workers (HCWs) with MRSA nasal colonisation pose a serious threat of passing on the infection to patients. A cross sectional study was designed to investigate the effect of ablution on MRSA nasal colonisation and was conducted at the Department of Pathology, King Edward Medical University. A total of 220 nasal swab samples, 110 from ablution performing HCWs and 110 from non-ablution performing HCWs were processed for the identification of Staphylococcus aureus and sensitivity testing for Cefoxitin. In the ablution performing group, 11(10%) HCW were harbouring Staphylococcus aureus in their nose, while in non-ablution performing group 32 (29%) HCWs had colonisation of Staphylococcus aureus. Frequency of MRSA colonised HCWs was 9/11 (82%) in ablution performing group, while in the non-ablution group 16/32 (55%) had MRSA in their nose. Logistic regression analysis demonstrated that the duration of working experience and non-performance of ablution are the potential risk factors.

RESUMO

The current study evaluated the effect of virtual reality based balance training in 30 stroke patients recruited via purposive sampling technique for a clinical trial. Sealed envelope method was used to randomly allocate patients into two groups, i.e. Exer-gaming group (EGG) (n=15) and traditional training (TBT) group (n=15). Patients ranging in age from 50 to 60 years were included using Modified Rankin Scale (MRS). Patients with cognitive deficits, severe physical impairments, contractures, inability to perform tasks, complications of the joint that affected movement, history of recent fracture, arthritis and those on drugs that could affect their physical function were excluded. Data was collected using Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and Timed Up & Go Test (TUG). Significant improvement was observed in the exer-gaming training group after completing intervention (P<0.001). Exer-gaming appears to be more effective in improving functional level, mobility and balance in stroke patients. The study also suggests that exer-gaming further provides dynamic environment for stroke patients, thereby improving dynamic balance and mobility.

RESUMO

Plant components have been extensively evaluated for their pharmacological activities. This study provides scientific rationale towards the therapeutic effect of Eucalyptus camaldulensis aqueous bark extract against induced atherosclerosis and hyperlipidemia in pigeons. Phytochemical components of Eucalyptus bark extract possess a great antioxidant activity that potentially reduced the risk of heart diseases. A total of 42 Pigeons of both sexes were distributed into negative control (fed normal grain diet), hyperlipidemic control (fed HFD 1% animal fat oil and 0.1% cholesterol for 3 months), test groups of variable doses (0.05, 0.1, 0.2 to 0.4 gms/kg BW for 21 days) and the group received atorvastatin daily after induction used. At the end of the experiment biochemical and histological evaluation has been performed. After HFD induction the serum levels of liver enzyme AST, glucose, urea, cholesterol, LDL, VLDL, and TG were significantly increased with the reduction in HDL levels. The atherogenic index was also found significantly raised. Microscopic examination of the liver and aorta showed the appearance of lipid-filled foam cells all over the liver parenchyma and intima after the HFD induction. Thus it was concluded that Eucalyptus aqueous bark extract can be effective against atherosclerosis and hyperlipidemia.

RESUMO

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is the leading cause of chronic liver complications globally and suppressor of cytokine signaling-1 (SOCS-1) is a gene triggered by cytokines that activates transcription of the JAK/STAT signal transduction pathway and negatively regulates Janus kinase-signal transducer. Several studies have shown that the expression of SOCS1 and SOCS3 genes negatively regulate the response of HCV infection to interferon therapy and interferon-free regimens. It has been reported that liver function enzymes elevate in CHC patients but the association of SOCS1 gene expression with LFTs haven't been studied. This study recruited 114 CHC patients and 112 normal healthy participants and analyzed the correlation of SOCS1 gene expression and liver function enzymes (LFEs). Herein, we observed that the expression of SOCS1 gene had a positive correlation with LFEs.
