RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to investigate the neurological, biochemical, and histopathologic effects of both the acute and maintenance treatment of curcumin on an experimental spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion injury model in rats. METHODS: The animals were randomly divided into 4 groups: (1) Sham, (2) ischemia-reperfusion (IR), (3) curcumin, and (4) solvent. Spinal cord ischemia was induced by clamping the aorta with minivascular clamps at a position just below the left renal artery and just proximal to the aortic bifurcation for 45 min. After 72 hr of reperfusion, neurological function was evaluated with a modified Tarlov score. In spinal cords, malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and nitric oxide (NO) levels were detected biochemically. Immunohistochemical staining was performed by antibodies against interleukin-6 (IL-6) and myeloperoxidase. Histopathologic changes were examined with hematoxylin and eosin staining. RESULTS: Although MDA tissue levels were elevated significantly in the IR group compared with the sham group, SOD and GPx levels decreased. After the administration of curcumin, MDA levels in the spinal cord decreased, and SOD and GPx levels increased. Those changes were statistically significant. There was no significance at NO levels. Among all groups, there was no difference in IL-6 and myeloperoxidase immunostaining. Histopathological analysis showed that histopathological changes in the IR group were improved by curcumin treatment. In the curcumin group, neurological outcome scores were significantly better statistically when compared with the IR group. CONCLUSION: We believe that curcumin possesses antioxidant, antiproliferative, and anticarcinogenic properties and may be an effective drug for the prevention of spinal cord IR injury in light of the neurologic, biochemical, and histopathological data of this study and published scientific literature.

RESUMO

There is a strong relationship between obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Chronic intermittent hypoxia, inflammation, oxidative stress, and endothelial dysfunction may constitute etiologic mechanisms, linking OSAS to CVD. Inflammation play an important role in the development of CVD. Platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) is a new biomarker showing inflammation. No previous study has ever investigated the association between PLR, CVD and OSAS severity in patients with OSAS. This study was designed to investigate the association between PLR and CVD in patients with OSAS, and relationship between severity of OSAS, polysomnographic parameters and PLR. This was a cohort study in which patients who had undergone a full night polysomnoraphy for diagnosis of OSA were recruited. Patients were divided according to their apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) scores into OSAS negative (Group 1: AHI < 5), mild (Group 2: AHI, 5-15), moderate (Group 3:AHI,15-30), and severe OSAS (Group 4: AHI > 30) groups. The presence of heart failure, coronary artery disease or arrhythmia was defined as CVD. A total of 424 patients were included in this study. There were 57, 93, 82, and 192 patients in Groups 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively. PLR were significantly different between groups (Group 1: 87.38; Group 2: 95.07; Group 3: 97.01, Group 4: 126.9, P < 0.05). PLR were significantly correlated with AHI, oxygen desaturation index, average and minimum O2 saturation values (P < 0.05). Values of PLR were significantly higher in patients with CVD compared with those without. Multiple regression analysis demonstrated that PLR is an independent predictor of CVD. PLR cut-off value for demonstrating the presence of CVD is higher than 108.56. In the light oh findings, PLR is strongly associated with the severity of OSAS and cardiovascular disease in OSAS patients. PLR might be used as a biomarker to predict CVD in OSAS patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Coronary slow flow (CSF) is characterized by normal or near-normal coronary arteries with delayed opacification of the distal vasculature that it may cause angina pectoris, acute myocardial infarction, life-threatening arrhythmias, and sudden cardiac death. The Tp-e interval, Tp-e/QT ratio, and Tp-e/QTc ratio are also known as predictors of ventricular arrhythmogenesis. The aim of this study was to assess ventricular repolarization in patients with CSF by using Tp-e interval, Tp-e/QT ratio, and Tp-e/QTc ratio. METHODS: This study included 50 patients with CSF and 51 control subjects. Coronary flow rates of all subjects were documented by thrombolysis in myocardial infarction (TIMI) frame count (TFC). Tp-e interval, Tp-e/QT ratio, and Tp-e/QTc ratio were measured from the 12-lead electrocardiogram. These parameters were compared between groups. RESULTS: In electrocardiographic parameters analysis, QT, QTc, QTd, and QTcd were significantly increased in CSF patients compared with the control subjects (P < 0.001, P = 0.019, P < 0.001, P < 0.001, respectively). The Tp-e interval, Tp-e/QT ratio, and Tp-e/QTc ratio in the CSF patients were significantly higher than those in the control subjects (Tp-e: 117 ± 21 milliseconds [ms] vs 96 ± 16 ms, P < 0.001; Tp-e/QT: 0.30 ± 0.06 vs 0.27 ± 0.06, P = 0.005; Tp-e/QTc: 0.27 ± 0.06 vs 0.24 ± 0.05, P < 0.001). In the multivariate analysis, increased Tp-e and Tp-e/QT ratio were associated with CSF. CONCLUSIONS: Our study revealed that when compared to the control subjects, Tp-e interval, Tp-e/QT ratio, and Tp-e/QTc were significantly increased in the CSF patients.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of intragastric balloon therapy on left ventricular function and left ventricular mass in a cohort of morbidly obese patients. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A prospective trial was performed in a cohort of 17 class II and class III morbidly obese individuals. The intragastric balloon was retained in the stomach for an average of 6 months. Conventional and tissue Doppler echocardiography were performed in all patients before and after the procedure. RESULTS: The mean age of the study participants was 36 ± 10 years (range: 18-55). The mean body mass index was significantly decreased following the intragastric balloon insertion procedure (44 ± 8 vs. 38 ± 5, p < 0.001). The left ventricular mass index and left atrial volume index were significantly decreased following the procedure (112 ± 21 vs. 93 ± 17, p = 0.001 and 20 ± 6 vs. 14 ± 5, p = 0.02, respectfully). In addition, the ratio of mitral peak early diastolic velocity to tissue Doppler-derived peak diastolic velocity and tissue Doppler echocardiography-derived left ventricular myocardial performance index were decreased significantly following the procedure (9.5 ± 1.9 vs. 7.7 ± 1.5, p = 0.002 and 0.57 ± 0.11 vs. 0.46 ± 0.06, p = 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Intragastric balloon therapy resulted in significant weight reduction in morbidly obese patients. This weight reduction was associated with improved left ventricular function.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: A relationship between atrial conduction time and hypertension was shown in previous studies. Increased atrial electromechanical intervals used to predict atrial fibrillation by measured tissue Doppler imaging (TDI). So we aimed to search if there was any association between the non-dipping status and atrial electromechanical intervals in pre-hypertensive patients. METHODS: Forty-one non-dipper and 33 dipper pre-hypertensive subjects enrolled in the study. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures were measured with a mercury sphygmomanometer. Twenty-four hours blood pressure was measured with cuff-oscillometric method. All patients were evaluated by transthoracic echocardiography. Using tissue Doppler imaging (TDI), atrial electromechanical coupling (PA) was measured from the lateral mitral annulus (PA lateral), septal mitral annulus (PA septum) and right ventricular tricuspid annulus (PA tricuspid). RESULTS: Systolic and diastolic blood pressures were significantly higher in subjects with non-dipper phenomenon than dipper ones at night. Twenty-four hours average systolic and diastolic blood pressures were higher in non-dipper pre-hypertensive subjects, but this elevation was not significant. Left and right intraatrial (PA lateral-PA septum and PA septum-PA tricuspid) and interatrial (PA lateral-PA tricuspid) electromechanical coupling intervals were measured significantly higher in non-dipper pre-hypertensive patients (31.3 ± 3.9 versus 24.1 ± 2.3, p = 0.001; 19.5 ± 4.3 versus 13.8 ± 2.1, p = 0.001; and 11.4 ± 2.8 versus 8.8 ± 1.5, p = 0.001). Also, interatrial electromechanical delay was negatively correlated with dipping levels. CONCLUSION: This study showed that prolonged atrial electromechanical intervals were related non-dipper pattern in pre-hypertensive patients. Prolonged electromechanical intervals may be an early sign of subclinical atrial dysfunction and arrhythmias' in non-dipper pre-hypertensive patients.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate left and right ventricular functions using tissue Doppler echocardiography (TDE) and myocardial performance index (MPI) methods in patients with slow coronary flow (SCF) and to determine the relationship between these parameters and thrombolysis in myocardial infarction frame count in SCF patients. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Thirty-five patients (20 males and 15 females) with SCF who underwent coronary angiography and 35 age- and sex-matched controls (14 males and 21 females) without SCF who underwent elective coronary angiography were enrolled in the study. Left ventricular (LV) and right ventricular (RV) functions were examined using conventional echocardiography and TDE. RESULTS: LV systolic myocardial velocity (Sm), early myocardial velocity (Em), late myocardial velocity (Am), and Em/Am ratio were similar in both the SCF and control groups; however, isovolumetric relaxation time (IRT) was higher in the SCF group compared to the control group (IRT: 99 ± 17 vs. 88 ± 20; p = 0.01). In patients with SCF, LV MPI was higher than in the control group, but this was not statistically significant (0.61 ± 0.11 vs. 0.56 ± 0.12; p = 0.07). The RV tricuspid annular velocities and MPI were similar in the SCF and control groups. CONCLUSION: This study showed that SCF affected LV functions echocardiographically and could cause partially reduced LV performance. In addition, SCF did not affect RV functions echocardiographically.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Wild-type transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (wtATTR-CM) is characterized by heart failure, conduction abnormalities and arrhythmias. The incidence of ventricular arrhythmias, particularly ventricular tachycardias (VTs), in wtATTR-CM is unclear. With the development of targeted therapies and improved overall prognosis, there is an unmet need to identify patients at high risk for VTs who might benefit from ICD therapy. METHODS: Between 2017 and 2022, 72 patients diagnosed with wtATTR-CM were prospectively evaluated for the presence of ventricular arrhythmias using a Holter ECG. VTs were defined as >3 consecutive beats with a heart rate > 100 beats per minute originating from a ventricle. RESULTS: The incidence of VTs was 44% (n = 32/72) in unselected wtATTR-CM patients. Patients with VT showed significantly more severe left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy (septum diameter 21 ± 2.6 vs. 19 ± 3.0 mm, p = 0.006), reduced LV ejection fraction (47 ± 8 vs. 52 ± 8%, p = 0.014) and larger left atria (32 ± 7 vs. 28 ± 6 mm2, p = 0.020), but no differences in cardiac markers such as NTproBNP and troponin. In a multivariable model, LV hypertrophy (LV mass indexed, OR = 1.02 [1.00-1.03], p = 0.031), LV end-diastolic diameter (OR = 0.85 [0.74-0.98], p = 0.021) and LV end-systolic diameter (OR = 1.19 [1.03-1.349], p = 0.092) were predictive for VT occurrence with an area under the receiver operating characteristic of 0.76 [0.65-0.87]. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of ventricular arrhythmia in wtATTR-CM is high and is associated with an advanced stage of left ventricular disease. Further studies are needed evaluating the role of VTs in predicting sudden cardiac death and the benefit of ICD therapy in wtATTR-CM.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To determine both ventricular functions and tissue Doppler echocardiography (TDE)-derived myocardial performance index (MPI) in patients with coronary artery ectasia (CAE). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Twenty-five patients with CAE (13 men; mean age 57 ± 9 years) and 25 age- and sex-matched controls without CAE (8 men; mean age 54 ± 10 years) were enrolled in the study. Left and right ventricular functions were detected using conventional echocardiography and TDE. RESULTS: Left ventricle-lateral wall (0.61 ± 0.17; 0.50 ± 0.10, p = 0.02), interventricular septum (0.66 ± 0.17; 0.52 ± 0.10, p = 0.007) and mean MPI (0.63 ± 0.15; 0.51 ± 0.09, p = 0.004) were increased in the CAE group compared to the control group. Right ventricular MPI was similar in both the CAE and control groups (0.58 ± 0.18; 0.52 ± 0.19, p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The findings show that left ventricular MPI is different in CAE patients without obstructive coronary artery disease compared to the normal control group. Also in these patients, right ventricular MPI was similar to the control group.

RESUMO

Prediabetes refers to a state where blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to meet the diagnostic criteria for diabetes mellitus. Similar to the worldwide trend, data derived from large studies has shown an increasing trend in the prevalence of prediabetes in Turkey. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data, 79 million individuals in the United States have prediabetes. This implies a large population worldwide is at risk of developing diabetes in the near future. In addition to its strong association with the development of diabetes, prediabetes itself represents an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease and its complications. This review will focus on definition, detection, association with cardiovascular disease and treatment of prediabetes.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The underlying mechanism of slow coronary flow (SCF) has yet to be elucidated. Increased red cell distribution width (RDW) and uric acid level may be indicative of an underlying inflammatory state. We aimed to investigate RDW and serum uric acid levels in patients with normal coronary arteries and SCF without stenosis. STUDY DESIGN: The study included 46 consecutive patients (25 males, 21 females; mean age 54 ± 11 years) with angiographically normal coronary arteries but having SCF in all three coronary arteries. The control group consisted of 40 patients (18 males, 22 females; mean age 54 ± 9 years) with angiographically normal coronary arteries without SCF. In both groups, RDW and serum uric acid levels were measured and compared. RESULTS: In the SCF group, TIMI frame counts measured in the left anterior descending coronary artery, left circumflex coronary artery, and right coronary artery were significantly higher compared to the control group (p<0.05). Patients with SCF exhibited significantly higher RDW (13.4 ± 1.6% vs. 12.6 ± 1.2%, p=0.01) and serum uric acid levels (5.3 ± 1.6 mg/dl vs. 4.7 ± 1.3 mg/dl, p=0.01) compared to controls. In logistic regression analysis, uric acid [Exp(B)=1.612, 95% CI 0.206-5.35, p=0.021] and RDW [Exp(B)=1.496, 95% CI 0.403-4.72, p=0.030] were found as independent predictors of SCF. CONCLUSION: Our findings show that patients with SCF have significantly increased RDW and serum uric acid levels. This may help throw more light on the pathophysiological basis of SCF.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have predicted an independent relationship between red cell distribution width (RDW) and the risk of death and cardiovascular events in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between RDW and extensiveness of CAD in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). METHODS: Two hundred and thirty-three diabetic patients who underwent coronary angiographies at our centre in 2010 were included in the study. All of the angiograms were re-evaluated and Gensini scores were calculated. Triple-vessel disease was diagnosed in the presence of stenosis > 50% in all three coronary artery systems. RESULT: RDW was significantly higher in diabetic CAD patients (p < 0.001). Patients with CAD who had a RDW value above the cut-off point also had higher Gensini scores, higher percentages of obstructive CAD and triple-vessel disease (p ≤ 0.001 for all). According to the cut-off values calculated using ROC analysis, RDW > 13.25% had a high diagnostic accuracy for predicting CAD. RDW was also positively correlated with Gensini score, obstructive CAD and triple-vessel disease (r < 0.468 and p < 0.001 for all). CONCLUSION: RDW values were found to be increased in the diabetic CAD population. Higher RDW values were related to more extensive and complex coronary lesions in patients with DM.

RESUMO

Intracoronary thrombus burden is associated with some adverse events and poor prognosis in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Identifying predictors of the intracoronary thrombus burden may contribute to the management of STEMI. In this study, we evaluated whether monocyte count to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR) is a predictor of intracoronary thrombus burden in patients with STEMI. The study population consisted of 414 patients with STEMI who underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Angiographic thrombus burden was classified based on thrombolysis in myocardial infarction (TIMI) thrombus grades. The patients were grouped into 2 categories of low thrombus burden and high thrombus burden. The MHR was significantly higher in the high thrombus burden group compared with the low thrombus group (16.0 [9.2-22.1] vs 25.4 [13.5-44.6]; P < .001). In multivariate logistic regression analysis, MHR was an independent predictor of high thrombus burden (odds ratio: 1.067, 95% CI: 1.031-1.105; P < .001). The area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve of the MHR was 0.688 (0.641-0.733; P < .001) to predict high thrombus burden. In conclusion, MHR was independent predictor of high thrombus burden in patients with STEMI who underwent primary PCI.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is a chronic, recurrent auto-inflammatory disease characterised by self-terminating attacks of fever and sterile polyserositis. The main cause of death in auto-inflammatory diseases is cardiovascular events. Additionally, auto-inflammatory diseases have potential effects on the myocardial repolarisation parameters, including the T-wave peak-to-end (Tp-Te) interval, cTp-Te interval (corrected Tp-Te) and the cTp-Te/QT ratio. The aim of this study was to analyse the efficacy of myocardial repolarisation alterations in anticipation of cardiovascular risks in patients with FMF. METHODS: This study included 66 patients with FMF and 58 healthy control subjects. Tp-Te and cTp-Te intervals and the cTp-Te/QT ratio were measured from the 12-lead electrocardiogram. RESULTS: In electrocardiographic parameters, analysis of QT, QT dispersion, corrected QT (QTc) and QTc dispersion were similar between the groups. The Tp-Te and cTp-Te intervals and Tp-Te/QT and cTp-Te/QT ratios were significantly prolonged in FMF patients. Multivariate linear regression analyses indicated that erythrocyte sedimentation rate was an independent predictor of a prolonged cTp-Te interval. CONCLUSIONS: Our study revealed that when compared with control subjects, Tp-Te and cTp-Te intervals and cTp-Te/QT ratio were increased in FMF patients.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Present study is an evaluation of left atrial (LA) mechanical and conduction function in patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) without significant valve dysfunction, and an investigation of relationship between LA function and aortic elasticity. METHODS: Study population consisted of 34 isolated BAV patients (mean age: 34±13 years) and 29 healthy, age- and sex-matched volunteers (mean age: 30±10 years). LA volume was measured using biplane area-length method and LA active and passive emptying volume and fraction was calculated. Intra- and interatrial atrial conduction time (ACT) was measured with tissue Doppler imaging. Aortic elasticity parameters were calculated including aortic strain, aortic stiffness index, aortic distensibility, and aortic elastic modulus. RESULTS: LA diameter, LA maximum volume, LA volume before atrial systole, and LA active emptying fraction were significantly higher in patients with BAV (33.2±3.2 mm vs 34.9±2.8 mm, p=0.030; 16.2±4.6 mL/m2 vs 19.8±4.8 mL/m2, p=0.004; 10.2±3.7 mL/m2 vs 12.1±4.9 mL/m2, p=0.029; and 30.4±12.0% vs 39.9±11.8%, p=0.003, respectively). ACT was similar between groups. Aortic distensibility was significantly lower and aortic stiffness index and aortic elastic modulus were significantly higher in patients with BAV (8.1±4.6 [10-6cm2dyn-1] vs 5.1±3.6 [10-6cm2dyn-1], p=0.006; 4.1±2.8 vs 7.3±4.9, p=0.003; 3.6±2.8 [dyn.cm-2106] vs 5.9±3.9 [dyn.cm-2106], p=0.010, respectively). In correlation analysis, LA active emptying fraction was significantly correlated with aortic stiffness index and mitral A- velocity (r=0.431, p<0.001; r=0.304, p=0.016, respectively). CONCLUSION: The present study demonstrated that LA mechanical functions and aortic elasticity parameters were deteriorated, while atrial conduction time was preserved in patients with isolated BAV. Furthermore, LA mechanical functions were significantly correlated with aortic elasticity parameters and mitral inflow A-wave velocity.

RESUMO

Myocardial fibrosis causes the fragmentation of QRS complexes on electrocardiogram. We hypothesized that the frequency of fragmented QRS (fQRS) could be more common in patients with psoriasis vulgaris than in healthy control subjects. In this prospective study, 100 patients with psoriasis vulgaris who did not have any cardiovascular disease were compared with 50 healthy volunteers in control group. The Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI) was used for expressing the severity of psoriasis. Patients with psoriasis were categorized according to presence of fQRS in ECG [fQRS (+) group and fQRS (-) group]. Patients with psoriasis had higher frequency of fQRS, higher levels of C reactive protein (CRP) and sedimentation rate (ESR) than the control group (n = 49, 49 % vs. n = 3, 6 %, p < 0.001; 9.91 ± 17.86 vs. 3.59 ± 0.79 mg/dL, p = 0.014; 17.37 ± 17.40 vs. 5.66 ± 5.22 mm/h, p < 0.001, respectively). Within the patient group there was no statistically significant difference between fQRS (+) and fQRS (-) subgroups with regards to sex, disease duration, CRP, ESR, medications and PASI score. It was suggested that presence of fQRS in ECG may be related with myocardial fibrosis in patients with psoriasis who do not have cardiovascular disease. For this reason, in our opinion, fQRS could be used as a predictive marker for myocardial fibrosis in patients with psoriasis.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Cardiac syndrome X (CSX) is characterised by typical exertional chest pain, a positive response to exercise testing, and a normal coronary angiography. The relationship of CSX with myocardial fibrosis and ischemia has been clearly demonstrated in previous studies. In addition, fragmented QRS (fQRS) has been reported in the literature as an indicator of myocardial fibrosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of fQRS in patients with CSX. METHODS: This prospective case-control study included 37 patients (CSX group) with typical complaints of angina, ischemia on an exercise test, and normal coronary arteries as detected by angiography and 47 patients (control group) with normal coronary arteries. Echocardiographic examinations were performed according to the recommendations of the American Society of Echocardiography. Continuous variables were expressed as mean±standard deviation (SD), and the qualitative variables were expressed as a percentage or ratio. Data were compared statistically with Shapiro-Wilk test, Student's t-test, Mann-Whitney U, chi-square and Fisher exact test. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between the CRX and control groups with respect to basic characteristics such as age and sex. fQRS and the frequency of its presentation with stable angina pectoris at the clinic were significantly higher in the CSX group than in the control group (p values: 0.001 and <0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: A close follow-up would be useful in CSX patients in whom fQRS is detected in an electrocardiogram (ECG) because of the association between fQRS and poor prognosis with respect to the prevention of late complications. We believe that the presence of fQRS in the ECG aids in the diagnosis of CSX in clinical practice and in the recognition of this group of patients.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate right ventricle (RV) functions using echocardiography in healthy subjects who migrated from the sea level to moderate altitude (1890 m). METHODS: The prospective observational in this study population consisted of 33 healthy subjects (23 men; mean age 20.4±3.2 years) who migrated from the sea level to a moderate altitude (Erzurum city centre, 1890 m above sea level) for long-term stay. Subjects underwent echocardiographic evaluation within the first 48 h of exposure to the moderate altitude and at the sixth month of arrival. Conventional echocardiographic parameters such as RV sizes and areas, systolic, and diastolic functional indices [fractional area change (FAC), tricuspid flow velocities, myocardial performance index (MPI), and tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE)] were obtained. Systolic (S) and diastolic (E', A') velocities were acquired from the apical fourchamber view using tissue Doppler imaging. Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, student's t-test, Wilcoxon test, and chi-square test were used in this study. RESULTS: There were no significant changes in RV size, FAC, MPI, TAPSE, inferior inspiratory vena cava collapse, tricuspid E velocity, and tricuspid annulus E' velocity. Compared with the baseline, there was a significant increase in mean pulmonary artery pressure (p=0.001); RV end systolic area (p=0.014); right atrial end diastolic area (p=0.021); tricuspid A velocity (p=0.013); tricuspid annulus S and A' velocity (p=0.031 and p=0.006, respectively); and RV free wall S, E', and A' velocity (p=0.007, p<0.001, and p=0.007 respectively) at the sixth month. Also, there was a significant decrease in tricuspid E/A ratio (1.61±0.3 vs. 1.45±0.2, p=0.038) and tricuspid annulus E'/A' ratio (1.52±0.5 vs. 1.23±0.4, p=0.002) at the sixth month. CONCLUSION: Our study revealed that right ventricular diastolic function was altered while the systolic function was preserved in healthy subjects who migrated from the sea level to a moderate altitude.
