RESUMO

The greater date moth (GDM), Aphomia sabella Hampson (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae: Galleriinae), is a serious pest of date palms, Phoenix dactylifera. The release of volatiles from both males and females was investigated using sequential SPME/GC/MS analysis. Males release a complex mixture of compounds in a circadian rhythm during the night between 03:00 and 05:00 hr. Six compounds were identified: benzaldehyde, sulcatol (6-methyl-5-hepten-2-ol), geranyl acetone [(E)-6,10-dimethyl-5,9-undecadien-2-one], phenylacetaldehyde, 2-phenylpropenal, and (R)-fuscumol [(R)-(E)-6, 10-dimethyl-5, 9-undecadien-2-ol]. Benzaldehyde, sulcatol, and geranyl acetone were found only in trace amounts. These compounds were in glands located in the forewing of males only. Small amounts of acetoin and 2,3-butanediol were found sporadically in the SPME/GC/MS analyses of volatiles from females, and these compounds probably originate from microorganisms. This is the first finding of a circadian release of male-specific compounds in moths. GC/EAD analyses with synthetic standards of compounds released by males showed that the female antenna is stimulated by all six compounds, while the male antenna responded only to phenylacetaldehyde. A possible pheromonal role for the male-specific compounds is suggested by the circadian rhythm of their release and the EAD response of females to them. However, trapping tests with the main male-specific compounds in screen cages in the laboratory or in the field did not reveal any significant behavioral responses from females or males. Copulation in the laboratory was observed only in the presence of date palm tissue, thus suggesting that sexual communication and mating of GDM moths probably occurs in the crown of date palms.

RESUMO

Police officers and clinicians are exposed to a broad range of moral risks in the field. When they perceive that a moral transgression has been committed by an agent responding to those risks, they are susceptible to moral injury. This article canvasses situations that can generate moral injury and describes symptom profiles of moral injury in law enforcement personnel, which tend to be more diverse than those in military personnel. This article also offers recommendations to clinicians who work with and care for police officers experiencing moral injury regarding symptom identification, recovery, and possible prevention.


Los policías y los médicos están expuestos a una gran variedad de riesgos morales fuera de las instalaciones. Cuando perciben que un agente que responde a esos riesgos ha cometido una transgresión moral, son susceptibles de sufrir daño moral. Este artículo analiza situaciones que pueden generar el daño moral y describe los perfiles de síntomas del daño moral en el personal policial, que tienden a ser más diversos que los del personal militar. Este artículo también ofrece recomendaciones a los médicos que trabajan con policías que sufren daños morales y los atienden para identificar los síntomas, recuperarse y posiblemente prevenirlos.

RESUMO

In addition to the physical and emotional challenges faced by law enforcement professionals, the job confronts officers with numerous moral risks. The moral risks include moral distress, moral injury, ethical exhaustion, compassion fatigue, and practices that lead to lapses in ethical decision-making. The paper focuses on what police agencies can do to better address the moral risks of policing. These moral risks are central to officer wellness and, thus, a crucial component of officers' operational readiness. Strategies are presented that will improve prevention efforts, including recruiting and hiring, training, supervision, and promotional practices. Additionally, the paper offers recommendations for effective approaches to intervention with officers who have displayed the effects of these moral risks. Finally, the paper highlights the kind of law enforcement leaders who are best able to implement strategies designed to prevent negative outcomes associated with the moral risks of policing.

RESUMO

In this article, the authors introduce the POWER perspective of police wellness and ethics. POWER stands for Police Officer Wellness, Ethics, and Resilience. The perspective represents the view that wellness and ethics cannot be discussed separately; they are inextricably connected to each other. Initiatives to address one should always, simultaneously, include the other. Although there is a need for wellness and ethics to be addressed on an organizational level, the present article emphasizes the importance of POWER for individual police officers. The authors make the argument that officers need to expand the way in which they conceptualize their own wellness to include efforts to maintain ethical decision-making. Specifically, officers will remain psychologically healthier when they take active steps to stay steadfastly committed to their ethical principles. Likewise, officers who utilize a comprehensive wellness program, including strategies to boost resilience, will be far less likely to experience lapses in ethical decision-making. Further recommendations for action and implication of this matter in law enforcement are presented and discussed.

The present manuscript presents foundational constructs related to death and loss (i.e., grief, bereavement, prolonged grief) providing empirical findings from recent research on the impact of death and loss on police officers' health, behavior, and overall functioning. Police officers are routinely exposed to death. In many instances, officers' contact with decedents includes, among others, victims of accidents, catastrophes, or violent crimes and witnessing the intense emotional suffering of relatives of the deceased. Additionally, it is not uncommon for officers to experience the loss of fellow officers from on-duty deaths and permanent, career-ending injuries. Simultaneously, like everyone, police officers have to cope with deaths of loved ones in their personal lives. The result is that officers' health and well-being are likely compromised because of the systematic exposure to on- and off-duty deaths. In this perspective paper, death and loss in law enforcement are explored in an attempt to raise awareness and increase attention to this area of police work. In addition, the authors list a number of prophylactic intervention strategies that would support officers cope with the impact of loss and death and promote their own resilience.

Exposure to critical incidents and hence potentially traumatic events is endemic in law enforcement. The study of law enforcement officers' experience of moral injury and their exposure to potentially morally injurious incidents, and research on moral injury's relationship with different forms of traumatization (e.g. compassion fatigue, post-traumatic stress disorder) are in their infancy. The present study aims to build on prior research and explores the role of moral injury in predicting post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and its clusters thereof. To this end, a sample of law enforcement officers (N = 370) from the National Police of Finland was recruited to participate in the current study. Results showed that moral injury significantly predicted PTSD as well as its diagnostic clusters (i.e., avoidance, hyperarousal, re-experiencing). The aforementioned role of moral injury to significantly predict PTSD and its clusters were unequivocal even when compassion fatigue was incorporated into the path model. Clinical, research, and law enforcement practice implications are discussed.

RESUMO

The complexities of modern policing require law enforcement agencies to expand how officers are trained to do their jobs. It is not sufficient for training to focus solely on the law or on perishable skills; such as arrest and control; defensive tactics; driving; and firearms. The present manuscript addresses the critical importance of infusing academy training with the psychological skills essential for officers to meet the contemporary challenges of police work. The authors suggest that the skills (i.e., cognitive; emotional; social; and moral) discussed in this paper may improve officers' wellness as well as promote relationships between police officers and community members. Specific methods of incorporating these skills in academy training are offered.

Although Henoch-Schönlein syndrome can occur at any age, it is overwhelmingly a disease of childhood. Indeed, Henoch-Schönlein syndrome is the most common vasculitis that affects children. The clinical features of this vasculitis are well documented, and the diagnosis is generally not difficult. This article briefly reviews both common and uncommon clinical aspects of the condition and information concerning therapy. A further focus of this review is recent information concerning abnormalities of immunoglobulin IgA1 glycosylation and the role of aberrantly glycosylated immunoglobulins in the development of Henoch-Schönlein syndrome. The final focus of the article is acute hemorrhagic edema, a benign vasculitis limited to the skin, which is characterized by circinate, medallion-like purpura, and ecchymoses and occurs in children younger than 4 years of age. The nosologic position of acute hemorrhagic edema, which has also been called Finkelstein-Seidlmayer syndrome, as a variant of Henoch-Schönlein syndrome is the subject of considerable debate, but most authors agree that there are sufficient clinical and prognostic differences to consider it a separate entity.

During the past decade, the insect growth regulator pyriproxyfen has been the most used insecticide for controlling the California red scale (CRS), Aonidiella aurantii (Maskell), an important pest in citrus groves worldwide. The aim of the present research was to develop bioassays for determining the effect of pyriproxyfen on developing stages and embryogenesis of CRS that can serve as baselines for monitoring resistance. Pyriproxyfen was very effective against first- and second-instar nymphs of a susceptible strain of CRS; 0.1 and 0.2 mg AI L(-1), resulting in 80 and 100% mortality of first-instar nymphs, and in 62.5 and 91.7% mortality of second-instar nymphs respectively. According to probit analysis, the LC(50) and LC(90) values of pyriproxyfen for first-instar nymphs were 0.03 and 0.15 mg AI L(-1), and for second-instar nymphs they were 0.05 and 0.25 mg AI L(-1) respectively. Pyriproxyfen was quite effective on first-instar nymphs of a CRS field strain originating from a citrus grove where two successive applications of the compound had been applied. Mortality rates were 86 and 100% at concentrations of 0.2 and 0.4 mg AI L(-1) respectively. Pyriproxyfen suppressed embryogenesis when CRS females were treated with pyriproxyfen. Young CRS females treated with 1.0 and 5.0 mg AI L(-1) pyriproxyfen produced 6.6 N(1)/F and 2.4 N(1)/F as compared with 10.9 N(1)/F in untreated control.
