RESUMO

Organic gold complexes have different biological activity, depending on their potential for interactions with key functional molecules. The aim of this study was to investigate potential of several newly synthesized organic gold complexes to influence spontaneous motility of the Fallopian tubes. The effects of [Au(bipy)Cl(2)](+) (dichloride(2,2'-bipyridyl)aurate(III)-ion), aurothiomalate, [Au(DMSO)(2)Cl(2)]Cl and DMSO on spontaneous motility of Fallopian tubes were tested on the isolated tube segments in vitro. Aurothiomalate (from 2.9 × 10(-9) to 4.9 × 10(-4) M/l), [Au(bipy)Cl(2)]Cl (from 3.3 × 10(-9) to 4.2 × 10(-5) M/l) and DMSO (from 1.9 × 10(-8) to 1.0 × 10(-5) M/l) did not affect spontaneous contractions of the isolated Fallopian tube ampulla, while [Au(DMSO)(2)Cl(2)]Cl (from 2.9 × 10(-9) to 4.2 × 10(-5) M/l) showed concentration-dependent increase (stimulation) of spontaneous contractions of the isolated Fallopian tube isthmus, and remained without effect on the isolated ampulla. The drugs designed as organic gold complexes with weaker bonds between the gold itself and organic part of a molecule could adversely affect motility of the Fallopian tubes, and theoretically fertility of women taking such drugs in their reproductive age.

RESUMO

The complex-formation reactions of the platinum(II) complexes, [Pt(dien)H2O]2+, [PtCl(dien)]+ and [PtBr(dien)]+ (dien is diethylenetriamine) with some biologically relevant ligands such as inosine (INO), inosine-5'-monophosphate (5'-IMP), guanosine-5'-monophosphate (5'-GMP), glutathione (GSH) and L-methionine (S-meth), were studied by UV-Vis (UV-Visible) spectrophotometry and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Reactions of the [PtCl(dien)]+ with L-methionine were studied in the presence and absence of 5'-GMP. The rate constants clearly showed a kinetic preference toward L-methionine. However, competitive reactions of [PtCl(dien)]+ with L-methionine and 5'-GMP demonstrated initially rapid formation of [Pt(dien)(S-meth)]2+ followed by displacement of L-methionine by 5'-GMP. In the later stages the concentration of [Pt(dien)(N7-GMP )]2+ is predominant. The results are analyzed in reference to the anti-tumour activity of Pt(II) complexes.

RESUMO

Tc-99m-methoxyisobutylisonitril (MIBI) scintigraphy is localizing diagnostic methods that is used for detection of sicken parathyroid gland (PT). The use of this method for PT diseases diagnosis makes surgical treatment of a patient more successful. This is a report about the patient who was surgically treated for primary hyperparathyroidism caused by hyperplasia of parathyroid glands and cancer of ectopic parathyroid gland. He was operated in two acts. The first surgical intervention was performed without preoperative diagnostics of Tc-99m-MIBI scintigraphy, while the second surgical intervention was preceded by Tc-99m-MIBI scintigraphy which clearly showed the existence of tumor in the back mediastinum (ectopic parathyroid gland). Pathophysiological analysis of the extirpated parathyroid gland showed the case of ectopic parathyroid gland cancer. The use of Tc-99m-MIBI scintigraphy as a localizing method before the first surgical intervention could have saved the patient from the second one and from risks it could have caused, as well.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome (KTS) is a very rare congenital anomaly of blood vessels, characterized by the following clinical triad: varicose superficial veins, port-wine stain and usually bony and soft tissue hypertophy of extremities, most often located in the lower extremities. It is often accompanied by visceral manifestations, and rarely combined with splenomegaly. CASE OUTLINE: A 30-year-old female patient came to the Surgery Clinic because of occasional left hypochondrial pain. After she was diagnosed with KTS combined with splenomegaly, splenectomy was performed. Macroscopic and microscopic spleen examination indicated the presence of tumor of vascular origin, presenting a combination of lymphangioma and hemangioma. CONCLUSION: Diagnosed KTS demands a thorough clinical examination of the patient because of the potential presence of visceral manifestations. When splenomegaly is present, even though being often benign, splenectomy is usually performed to alleviate accompanying symptoms which occur as a result of organ enlargement and compression, to prevent rupture and consequential bleeding when the vascular spleen tumor is large, and finally to avoid a possibility of malignant transformation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Male breast cancer is rare and represents less than 1% of all breast cancers. Considering the fact that the male breast most often does not consist of lobules and acini, lobular carcinoma of the male breast is exceptionally rare. CASE REPORT: In this paper we present a unique case of alveolar variant of lobular male breast cancer in a 56-year-old patient. CONCLUSION: According to our knowledge this is the first presentation of an alveolar variant of lobular male breast cancer that appeared 14 years after chemo- and radiotherapy for the treatment of Hodgkin's disease.

RESUMO

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of newborns is a transient, benign process in full- term or postmature neonates. It is associated with perinatal distress. Newborn stress inhibits immature enzyme system, which already has relative inability to desaturate saturated fatty acids. It leads to fat crystillisation and necrosis. Skin biopsy revealed necrotic focus and crystallisation in fat cells. Hypercalcemia may be a potential complication.

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: BACKGRAUND/AIM: Gene p53, or "cell genome keeper", has a preventive effect on the occurrence of genetic aberrations and prevents abnormal expansion of (tumor) cells. In gastric cancer cells in most cases we register high expression of mutated p53 gene, which correlates with prognosis and specific clinical-pathological characteristics of gastric cancer. METHODS: Using the imunohistochemical method we determined the level of expression of p53 protein in 62 gastric cancers and 30 precancerous conditions (intestinal metaplasia of the stomach). We analyzed the relationship of the level of p53 expression and clinical pathological characteristics of gastric cancer. RESULTS: Expression of p53 was positive in 42 (67.7%) tumor cases and in 7 (14.3%) cases of intestinal metaplasia. Expression of P53 and stomach cancer were in direct correlation (p = 0.000). Sensitivity for p53 in stomach cancer cases was 67.7% (42/62), and specifility was 76.7% (23/30). Expression of mutated p53 protein was in direct correlation with the invasion of lymph nodes (p = 0.034) and with invasion of blood vessels by carcinoma cells (p = 0.042). CONCLUSION: There is a direct correlation between p53 expression and gastric cancer and it indicates the ability of carcinoma cells to invade blood vessels.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Surgical site infections are the most prevalent nosocomial infections in majority of studies conducted in the last decades in the world and in our country. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The purpose of this study was to assess the incidence rate of surgical site infections at Surgery Clinic of the Clinical Hospital Center in Kragujevac. The incidence study was performed from August 1 to 31, 2001, followed Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines. In this period 186 patients were admitted and underwent operation at Surgery Clinic of the Clinical Hospital Center in Kragujevac. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Incidence rate of surgical site infections was 9.1%. The highest rate was recorded at the Department of vascular surgery (29.2%). The lowest rate was established at the Department of gastrointestinal surgery unit (3.3%). At Departments of neurosurgery, dermatology and maxillofacial surgery surgical site infections were not recorded. The most frequent isolated causative agents were Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas species.
