RESUMO

A novel air-lifting loop reactor combines anoxic, oxic, and settling zones to achieve organic and nutrient removal, as well as solid-liquid separation. To address sludge settling ability and operation stability issues caused by low dissolved oxygen in aerobic zones, this study proposes using modified polypropylene carriers to establish a fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) system. A pilot-scale demonstration of the IFAS-based air-lifting loop reactor is conducted, and the results show successful operation for approximately 300 days. The pilot-scale reactor achieves a maximum aerobic granulation ratio of 16% in the bulk liquid. The IFAS system contributes to efficient removal of organic matter (96%) and nitrogen (94%) by facilitating simultaneous nitrification and denitrification, as well as fast solid-liquid separation with a low sludge volume index of 34 mL/g. Microbial analysis reveals enrichment of functional bacteria involved in nitrification, denitrification, and flocculation throughout the operation process.

RESUMO

Solar-assisted electrochemical desalination has offered a new energy-water nexus technology for sustainable development in recent studies. However, only a few reports have demonstrated insufficient photocurrent, a low salt removal rate, and poor stability. In this study, a high-quality freshwater level of 5-10 ppm (from an initial feed of 10 000 ppm), an enhanced salt removal rate (217.8 µg cm-2 min-1 of NaCl), and improved cycling and long-term stability are achieved by integrating dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) and redox-flow desalination (RFD) under light irradiation without additional electrical energy consumption. The DSSC redox electrolyte (I- /I3- ) is circulated between the photoanode (N719/TiO2 ) and intermediate electrode (graphite paper). Two DSSCs in parallel or series connections are directly coupled to the RFD device. Overall, this hybrid system can be used to boost photo electrochemical desalination technology. The energy-water nexus technology will open a new route for dual-role devices with photodesalination functions without energy consumption and solar-to-electricity generation.

RESUMO

A large number of lithium batteries have been retiring from the market of energy storage. Thus, recycling of the used electrode materials is becoming urgent. In this study, an industrial machinery processing was used to recover the crystal structure of the waste LiCoO2 materials with the combination of small-scale equipment repair technology. The results show that the crystal parameters of the repaired LiCoO2 material become small, the unit cell volume is reduced, and the crystal structure tends to be stable. The Co-O bond length of 1.9134 nm, O-Co-O bond angle of 94.72°, the (003) interplanar spacing of 0.467 nm indicate the excellent recovery level of the repaired LiCoO2 . In addition, the electrochemical performance of the repaired LiCoO2 material is greatly improved, compared with the waste material. The capacity of the repaired electrode material can be maintained at 120 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles at the current density of 0.2C. The promising rate performance of the repaired electrode material demonstrates the stable structure. This research work provides a large-scale method for the direct recovery of LiCoO2 with the reduction of unnecessary energy and reagent consumption, which will be beneficial to the environmental protection.

RESUMO

K metal is the optimal anode for K-ion batteries because of its high capacity and low operating potential, but it suffers from fast capacity fading and safety issues due to an unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and continuous K-dendrite growth. Herein, to obtain promising potassium-metal batteries, a 3D polyvinyl-alcohol (PVA)-borax layer is designed, which enables a dendrite-free K-plating/stripping process. The protective layer possesses good wettability, high K-ion diffusivity, and good structural stability, which enables a "uniform and underneath plating" behavior, therefore exhibiting a stable electrochemical performance. As a result, Cu current collector with PVA-borax (PVA-borax@Cu) exhibits a stable cycling lifetime for 700 h at 0.5 mA cm-2 and 500 h at 1 mA cm-2 at 10 % depth of discharge (DOD) without dendrite formation. Even at a high utilization of 25 % DOD and 50 % DOD, the PVA-borax@Cu shows a stable cycle for 180 h and 100 h, respectively.

RESUMO

Three new crystal structures containing [PtCl6]2−, pyridinium and benzimidazole groups have been prepared: [PtCl6]·(H-bzm)2·2(H2O) (1), [PtCl6]·(H-bipy)2·2(H2O) (2), [PtCl6]·(H-dimethyl-bipy)2·2(H2O) (3) [H-bzm: benzimidazole cation, H-bipy: 2,2'-bipyridine cation, H-dimethyl-bipy: 4,4'-bimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine cation]. All compounds have been fully characterized by elemental analyses, single-crystal X-ray analyses, IR spectra, TG analyses, and fluorescence studies. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis suggests that the primary synthon contains ⁺N⁻H···Cl−, including ionic bonding and hydrogen bonding interactions. The dimensions are enhanced further by secondary O⁻H ∙∙Cl and N⁻H ∙∙O hydrogen bonding interactions between donor and acceptor atoms located at the periphery of these synthons. Moreover, coulombic attractions between the ions play an important role in reinforcing the structures of these complexes. In addition, antitumor activity against human lung adenocarcinoma cell line (A549) and human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cell line (CNE-2) was performed. These complexes all showed inhibition to the two cell lines, while complex 3 exhibited higher efficiency than complexes 1⁻2.

RESUMO

The detection of the vibration signal from human vocal folds provides essential information for studying human phonation and diagnosing voice disorders. Doppler radar technology has enabled the noncontact measurement of the human-vocal-fold vibration. However, existing systems must be placed in close proximity to the human throat and detailed information may be lost because of the low operating frequency. In this paper, a long-distance detection method, involving the use of a 94-GHz millimeter-wave radar sensor, is proposed for detecting the vibration signals from human vocal folds. An algorithm that combines empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and the auto-correlation function (ACF) method is proposed for detecting the signal. First, the EMD method is employed to suppress the noise of the radar-detected signal. Further, the ratio of the energy and entropy is used to detect voice activity in the radar-detected signal, following which, a short-time ACF is employed to extract the vibration signal of the human vocal folds from the processed signal. For validating the method and assessing the performance of the radar system, a vibration measurement sensor and microphone system are additionally employed for comparison. The experimental results obtained from the spectrograms, the vibration frequency of the vocal folds, and coherence analysis demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively detect the vibration of human vocal folds from a long detection distance.

RESUMO

Ultra-wide band (UWB) radar for short-range human target detection is widely used to find and locate survivors in some rescue missions after a disaster. The results of the application of bistatic UWB radar for detecting multi-stationary human targets have shown that human targets close to the radar antennas are very often visible, while those farther from radar antennas are detected with less reliability. In this paper, on account of the significant difference of frequency content between the echo signal of the human target and that of noise in the shadowing region, an algorithm based on wavelet entropy is proposed to detect multiple targets. Our findings indicate that the entropy value of human targets was much lower than that of noise. Compared with the method of adaptive filtering and the energy spectrum, wavelet entropy can accurately detect the person farther from the radar antennas, and it can be employed as a useful tool in detecting multiple targets by bistatic UWB radar.

RESUMO

The through-wall detection and classification of human activities are critical for anti-terrorism, security, and disaster rescue operations. An effective through-wall detection and classification technology is proposed for finer-grained human activities such as piaffe, picking up an object, waving, jumping, standing with random micro-shakes, and breathing while sitting. A stepped-frequency continuous wave (SFCW) bio-radar sensor is first used to conduct through-wall detection of finer-grained human activities; Then, a comprehensive range accumulation time-frequency transform (CRATFR) based on inverse weight coefficients is proposed, which aims to strengthen the micro-Doppler features of finer activity signals. Finally, in combination with the effective eigenvalues extracted from the CRATFR spectrum, an optimal self-adaption support vector machine (OS-SVM) based on prior human position information is introduced to classify different finer-grained activities. At a fixed position (3 m) behind a wall, the classification accuracies of six activities performed by eight individuals were 98.78% and 93.23%, respectively, for the two scenarios defined in this paper. In the position-changing experiment, an average classification accuracy of 86.67% was obtained for five finer-grained activities (excluding breathing) of eight individuals within 6 m behind the wall for the most practical scenario, a significant improvement over the 79% accuracy of the current method.

RESUMO

Remarkable progress has been achieved in the detection of single stationary human. However, restricted by the mutual interference of multiple humans (e.g., strong sidelobes of the torsos and the shadow effect), detection and localization of the multiple stationary humans remains a huge challenge. In this paper, ultra-wideband (UWB) multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) radar is exploited to improve the detection performance of multiple stationary humans for its multiple sight angles and high-resolution two-dimensional imaging capacity. A signal model of the vital sign considering both bi-static angles and attitude angle of the human body is firstly developed, and then a novel detection method is proposed to detect and localize multiple stationary humans. In this method, preprocessing is firstly implemented to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the vital signs, and then a vital-sign-enhanced imaging algorithm is presented to suppress the environmental clutters and mutual affection of multiple humans. Finally, an automatic detection algorithm including constant false alarm rate (CFAR), morphological filtering and clustering is implemented to improve the detection performance of weak human targets affected by heavy clutters and shadow effect. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed method can get a high-quality image of multiple humans and we can use it to discriminate and localize multiple adjacent human targets behind brick walls.

RESUMO

Ultra-wideband (UWB) radar has been widely used for detecting human physiological signals (respiration, movement, etc.) in the fields of rescue, security, and medicine owing to its high penetrability and range resolution. In these applications, especially in rescue after disaster (earthquake, collapse, mine accident, etc.), the presence, number, and location of the trapped victims to be detected and rescued are the key issues of concern. Ample research has been done on the first issue, whereas the identification and localization of multi-targets remains a challenge. False positive and negative identification results are two common problems associated with the detection of multiple stationary human targets. This is mainly because the energy of the signal reflected from the target close to the receiving antenna is considerably stronger than those of the targets at further range, often leading to missing or false recognition if the identification method is based on the energy of the respiratory signal. Therefore, a novel method based on cross-correlation is proposed in this paper that is based on the relativity and periodicity of the signals, rather than on the energy. The validity of this method is confirmed through experiments using different scenarios; the results indicate a discernible improvement in the detection precision and identification of the multiple stationary targets.

RESUMO

After chemical or nuclear leakage or explosions, finding survivors is a huge challenge. Although human bodies can be found by smart vehicles and drones equipped with cameras, it is difficult to verify if the person is alive or dead this way. This paper describes a continuous wave radar sensor for remotely sensing the vital signs of human subjects. Firstly, a compact and portable 24 GHz Doppler radar system is designed to conduct non-contact detection of respiration signal. Secondly, in order to improve the quality of the respiration signals, the self-correlation and adaptive line enhancer (ALE) methods are proposed to minimize the interferences of any moving objects around the human subject. Finally, the detection capabilities of the radar system and the signal processing method are verified through experiments which show that human respiration signals can be extracted when the subject is 7 m away outdoors. The method provided in this paper will be a promising way to search for human subjects outdoors.

RESUMO

In order to improve the speech acquisition ability of a non-contact method, a 94 GHz millimeter wave (MMW) radar sensor was employed to detect speech signals. This novel non-contact speech acquisition method was shown to have high directional sensitivity, and to be immune to strong acoustical disturbance. However, MMW radar speech is often degraded by combined sources of noise, which mainly include harmonic, electrical circuit and channel noise. In this paper, an algorithm combining empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and mutual information entropy (MIE) was proposed for enhancing the perceptibility and intelligibility of radar speech. Firstly, the radar speech signal was adaptively decomposed into oscillatory components called intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) by EMD. Secondly, MIE was used to determine the number of reconstructive components, and then an adaptive threshold was employed to remove the noise from the radar speech. The experimental results show that human speech can be effectively acquired by a 94 GHz MMW radar sensor when the detection distance is 20 m. Moreover, the noise of the radar speech is greatly suppressed and the speech sounds become more pleasant to human listeners after being enhanced by the proposed algorithm, suggesting that this novel speech acquisition and enhancement method will provide a promising alternative for various applications associated with speech detection.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to screen high-performance ammonia oxidizing bacteria ( AOB) resistant to a high concentration of ammonia-nitrogen and low C/N ratio, for the development of novel AOB agents. METHODS: Multi-point sampling, compulsory domestication, gradient dilution of domestication liquid were conducted to screen AOB with efficient and stable ammonia-nitrogen removing ability, and effects of different factors on its ammoxidation ability including C/N ratio, shaking speed and ammonia-nitrogen concentration were studied. Dominant strains were screened and identified by morphological observation, physiological and biochemical properties test and 16S rRNA sequence analysis. RESULTS: Three efficient AOB were obtained, among them a micro-flora named JQ8 showed the highest activity. The ammonia-nitrogen removal rate reached 95. 07% in a simulated wastewater with 17. 86 mmol/L of initial ammonia-nitrogen at C/N 4 treated by JQ8 for 6 days. Moreover, its ammonia nitrogen removal rate kept above 95% and net nitrogen removing rate nearly 80% in the solution with a C/N ratio above 4 and an NH4⁺-N concentration below 28.57 mmol/L. The circuit board industry wastewater was treated using the laboratory-simulated aerobic active sludge disposal system. The removal rate of NH4⁺-N and total nitrogen reached 87.8% and 67.6% respectively after 7 days' treatment using JQ8. Defluvibacter sp., Paracoccus sp. and Aquamicrobium sp. were identified as the dominant strains after the composition analysis of JQ8. CONCLUSION: An ammonia oxidizing bacteria consortium JQ8 screened from the landfill leachate showed a strong ammonium-nitrogen removal and endurance ability under low C/N ratio and high ammonia-nitrogen concentration, thus is probably applicable to intensify the ammonia-nitrogen removal treatment of industrial wastewater with sewage disposal system.

RESUMO

Ten phenol-degrading bacterial strains were isolated from three geographically distant environments. Five of them, identified as Diaphorobacter, Acidovorax, Acinetobacter (two strains), and Corynebacterium, could additionally transform pyridine, through the transcription of phenol hydroxylase genes induced both by phenol and pyridine. HPLC-UV and LC-MS analyses indicated that one metabolite (m/e = 96.07) with the same molecular weight as monohydroxylated pyridine was produced from the five phenol-degrading strains, when pyridine was the sole carbon source. Phenol (50 mg l(-1)) could initially inhibit and later stimulate the pyridine transformation. In addition, heterologous expression of the phenol hydroxylase gene (pheKLMNOP) resulted in the detection of monohydroxylated pyridine, which confirmed the phenol hydroxylase could catalyze pyridine hydroxylation. Phylogeny of the phenol hydroxylase genes revealed that the genes from the five pyridine-hydroxylating strains form a clade with each other and with those catalyzing the hydroxylation of phenol, BTEX (acronym of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene), and trichloroethylene. These results suggest that pyridine transformation via hydroxylation by phenol hydroxylase may be prevalent in environments than expected.

RESUMO

Freshwater is an essential resource in today's world, and how to produce freshwater with low or even zero power consumption is a major challenge. Here, a desalination system powered by a triboelectric-electromagnetic hybrid nanogenerator (TEHG) is presented, which can utilize the water's own energy to remove the salt ions from itself, demonstrating a new concept of "self-desalination". At a relatively low rotation speed of 150 rpm, the system can dilute NaCl brine from 4000 ppm to 145 ppm with a high salt removal rate of 147.1 µg cm-2 min-1 and a freshwater productivity of up to 31.1 L m-2 h-1. The actual seawater can also be treated with a total ion removal efficiency of 99.6 % and a freshwater productivity of 2.7 L m-2 h-1, which is superior to other renewable-energy-powered desalination systems. More importantly, fully self-powered desalination process can be realized by manual cranking and hydrokinetic energy impact, both of which are capable of treating 1000 ppm salt feed to the drinking water level. The TEHG-powered desalination system not only provides excellent desalination performance but also addresses the challenges of power consumption and limited capacity, which offers a completely new paradigm of "self-desalination".

RESUMO

Straightforward, sensitive, and specific human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) assays are urgently needed. The creation of a point-of-care (POC) device for decentralized diagnostics has the potential to significantly reduce the time to treatment, especially for infectious diseases. Notably, however, many POC solutions proposed to date fall short of meeting the ASSURED guidelines, which are crucial for effective deployment in the field. Herein, we developed a DNA biosensor platform for the specific and quantitative detection of HIV. The platform contains a rolling circle amplification (RCA)-based DNA biosensor and a portable fluorescence detector, in which HIV-encoded integrase (IN) enzyme activity is used as a biomarker to achieve HIV-specific detection. The cleavage and integration reaction of IN on the sensor surface and RCA are combined in this detection platform to perform detection signal cascade amplification, ultimately achieving a detection limit of 0.125 CFU/µL of HIV particles. Moreover, the DNA sensor system exhibited high sensitivity and accuracy for detecting HIV in clinical samples, suggesting that it has potential for application in clinical settings to detect retroviruses other than HIV. In addition, quantitative detection based on this biosensing platform was significantly correlated with the CD4+ lymphocytes count, which can provide guidance for antiretroviral therapy and which affects long-term death risk assessment in HIV patients. Therefore, this DNA biosensing platform based on IN activity is expected to be useful for rapid HIV testing, diagnosis, and treatment monitoring, enabling the development of new POC diagnostic tests and will thus be highly valuable for developing HIV prevention strategies and effective treatments.

RESUMO

The development of modern construction and transportation industries demands increasingly high requirements for thin, lightweight, high-strength, and highly tough composite materials, such as metal carbides and concrete. Bamboo is a green, low-carbon, fast-growing, renewable, and biodegradable material with high strength and toughness. However, the density of its inner layer is low due to the functional gradient (the volume fraction of vascular bundles decreases from the outer layer to the inner layer), resulting in low performance, high compressibility, and significant amounts of bamboo waste. We utilized chemical and mechanical treatments of bamboo's low-density, low-strength inner layers to create lightweight, ultra-thin, high-strength, and high-toughness composites. The treatment included the partial removal of lignin and hemicellulose to alter the chemical components, followed by mechanical drying and hot pressing. The treated bamboo had 100.8 % higher tensile strength (150.35 MPa), 47.7 % higher flexural strength (97.67 MPa), and 132.0 % higher water resistance and was approximately 68.9 % thinner than the natural bamboo. The excellent physical and mechanical properties of the treated bamboo are attributed to the contraction of parenchyma cells during delignification, the interlocking due to the collapse of parenchyma cells during mechanical drying, and an increase in the density of hydrogen bonds between cellulose molecular chains during hot pressing. Our research provides a new strategy for obtaining sustainable, ultra-thin, lightweight, high-strength, and high-toughness composite materials from bamboo for construction and transportation applications.

RESUMO

Objectives: Lung adenocarcinomas have different prognoses depending on their histological growth patterns. Micropapillary growth within lung adenocarcinoma, particularly metastasis, is related to dismal prognostic outcome. Metastasis accounts for a major factor leading to mortality among lung cancer patients. Understanding the mechanisms underlying early stage metastasis can help develop novel treatments for improving patient survival. Methods: Here, quantitative mass spectrometry was conducted for comparing protein expression profiles among various histological subtypes, including adenocarcinoma in situ, minimally invasive adenocarcinoma, and invasive adenocarcinoma (including acinar and micropapillary [MIP] types). To determine the mechanism of MIP-associated metastasis, we identified a protein that was highly expressed in MIP. The expression of the selected highly expressed MIP protein was verified via immunohistochemical (IHC) analysis and its function was validated by an in vitro migration assay. Results: Proteomic data revealed that low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein-associated protein 1 (LRPAP1) was highly expressed in MIP group, which was confirmed by IHC. The co-expressed proteins in this study, PSMD1 and HSP90AB1, have been reported to be highly expressed in different cancers and play an essential role in metastasis. We observed that LRPAP1 promoted lung cancer progression, including metastasis, invasion and proliferation in vitro and in vivo. Conclusion: LRPAP1 is necessary for MIP-associated metastasis and is the candidate novel anti-metastasis therapeutic target.

RESUMO

Electrochemical redox flow desalination is an emerging method to obtain freshwater; however, the costly requirement for continuously supplying and regenerating redox species limits their practical applications. Recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries is a growing challenge for their sustainable utilization. Existing battery recycling methods often involve massive secondary pollution. Here, we demonstrate a redox flow system to couple redox flow desalination with lithium recovery from spent lithium-ion batteries. The spontaneous reaction between a battery cathode material (LiFePO4) and ferricyanide enables the continuous regeneration of the redox species required for desalination. Several critical operating parameters are optimized, including current density, the concentrations of redox species, salt concentrations of brine, and the amounts of added LiFePO4. With the addition of 0.5920 g of spent LiFePO4 in five consecutive batches, the system can operate over 24 h, achieving 70.46 % lithium recovery in the form of LiCl aqueous solution at the concentration of 6.716 g·L-1. Simultaneously, the brine (25 mL, 10000 ppm NaCl) was desalinated to freshwater. Detailed cost analysis shows that this redox flow system could generate a revenue of ¥ 13.66 per kg of processed spent lithium-ion batteries with low energy consumption (0.77 MJ kg-1) and few greenhouse gas emissions indicating excellent economic and environmental benefits over existing lithium-ion battery recycling technologies, such as pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical methods. This work opens a new approach to holistically addressing water and energy challenges to achieve sustainable development.

RESUMO

Hydrothermal processes are considered a promising strategy for the conversion of ever-growing plastic wastes. Plasma-assisted peroxymonosulfate-hydrothermal process has attracted increasing attention in enhancing the efficiency of hydrothermal conversion. However, the role of solvent in this process is unclear and rarely researched. Herein, the conversion process with different water-based solvents was investigated based on a plasma-assisted peroxymonosulfate-hydrothermal reaction. As the ratio of the solvent effective volume in the reactor increased from 20% to 53.3%, the conversion efficiency displayed an obvious decrease from 7.1% to 4.2%. The results indicated that the increased pressure caused by the solvent greatly reduced the surface reaction and forced the hydrophilic groups to shift back to the carbon chain, thereby reducing the reaction kinetics. A further increase in the solvent effective volume ratio could promote the conversion in the inner layer of the plastics to achieve an increase of the conversion efficiency. These findings can provide valuable guidance for the design of hydrothermal conversion for plastic wastes.
