RESUMO

While aqueous zinc-ion batteries exhibit great potential, their performance is impeded by zinc dendrites. Existing literature has proposed the use of hydrogel electrolytes to ameliorate this issue. Nevertheless, the mechanical attributes of hydrogel electrolytes, particularly their modulus, are suboptimal, primarily ascribed to the substantial water content. This drawback would severely restrict the dendrite-inhibiting efficacy, especially under large mass loadings of active materials. Inspired by the structural characteristics of wood, this study endeavors to fabricate the anisotropic carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogel electrolyte through directional freezing, salting-out effect, and compression reinforcement, aiming to maximize the modulus along the direction perpendicular to the electrode surface. The heightened modulus concurrently serves to suppress the vertical deposition of the intermediate product at the cathode. Meanwhile, the oriented channels with low tortuosity enabled by the anisotropic structure are beneficial to the ionic transport between the anode and cathode. Comparative analysis with an isotropic hydrogel sample reveals a marked enhancement in both modulus and ionic conductivity in the anisotropic hydrogel. This enhancement contributes to significantly improved zinc stripping/plating reversibility and mitigated electrochemical polarization. Additionally, a durable quasi-solid-state Zn//MnO2 battery with noteworthy volumetric energy density is realized. This study offers unique perspectives for designing hydrogel electrolytes and augmenting battery performance.

Benefit from the deeper penetration of mechanical wave, ultrasound (US)-based sonodynamic therapy (SDT) executes gratifying efficacy in treating deep-seated tumors. Nevertheless, the complicated mechanism of SDT undeniably hinders the exploration of ingenious sonosensitizers. Herein, a receptor engineering strategy of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) sonosensitizers (TPA-Tpy) with acceptor (A)-donor (D)-A' structure is proposed, which inspects the effect of increased cationizations on US sensitivity. Under US stimulation, enhanced cationization in TPA-Tpy improves intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and accelerates charge separation, which possesses a non-negligible promotion in type I reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Moreover, abundant ROS-mediated mitochondrial oxidative stress triggers satisfactory immunogenic cell death (ICD), which further promotes the combination of SDT and ICD. Subsequently, subacid pH-activated nanoparticles (TPA-Tpy NPs) are constructed with charge-converting layer (2,3-dimethylmaleic anhydride-poly (allylamine hydrochloride)-polyethylene glycol (DMMA-PAH-PEG)) and TPA-Tpy, achieving the controllable release of sonosensitizers. In vivo, TPA-Tpy-mediated SDT effectively initiates the surface-exposed of calreticulin (ecto-CRT), dendritic cells (DCs) maturation, and CD8+ T cell infiltration rate through enhanced ROS production, achieving suppression and ablation of primary and metastatic tumors. This study provides new opinions in regulating acceptors with eminent US sensitization, and brings a novel ICD sono-inducer based on SDT to realize superior antitumor effect.

Nicotianamine (NA) plays a crucial role in transporting metal ions, including iron (Fe), in plants; therefore, NICOTIANAMINE SYNTHASE (NAS) genes, which control NA synthesis, are tightly regulated at the transcriptional level. However, the transcriptional regulatory mechanisms of NAS genes require further investigations. In this study, we determined the role of bZIP44 in mediating plant response to Fe deficiency stress by conducting transformation experiments and assays. bZIP44 positively regulated the response of Arabidopsis to Fe deficiency stress by interacting with MYB10 and MYB72 to enhance their abilities to bind at NAS2 and NAS4 promoters, thereby increasing NAS2 and NAS4 transcriptional levels and promote NA synthesis. In summary, the transcription activities of bZIP44, MYB10, and MYB72 were induced in response to Fe deficiency stress, which enhanced the interaction between bZIP44 and MYB10 or MYB72 proteins, synergistically activated the transcriptional activity of NAS2 and NAS4, promoted NA synthesis, and improved Fe transport, thereby enhancing plant tolerance to Fe deficiency stress.

BACKGROUND: Psychotic major depression (PMD) is characterized by major depressive disorder (MDD) accompanied by delusions or hallucinations. While the prevalence of PMD and its association with anxiety have been studied, gender-specific differences and the role of thyroid hormones in PMD-related anxiety remain less explored. METHODS: A total of 1718 first-episode and drug-naïve MDD patients was assessed for the presence of PMD and severe anxiety. Clinical assessments, including Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA), Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), and Clinical Global Impressions-Severity (CGI-S) scale, were conducted to assess depression, anxiety, psychotic symptoms, and clinical severity, respectively. Blood samples were collected to measure thyroid function parameters. RESULTS: The prevalence of severe anxiety was higher in PMD patients compared to non-psychotic MDD patients (71.3% vs. 5.3%). No significant gender differences were observed in the prevalence of severe anxiety among PMD patients. However, elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels and increased depression severity (HAMD scores) were identified as independent risk factors for severe anxiety in female PMD patients. In contrast, no significant risk factors were found in male PMD patients. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUCROC) analysis revealed that the HAMD score and TSH level showed acceptable discriminatory capacity for distinguishing between female PMD patients with and without severe anxiety. CONCLUSION: This study highlights the heightened prevalence of severe anxiety in PMD patients, with TSH levels and depression severity emerging as gender-specific risk factors for anxiety in females. These findings suggest the importance of thyroid hormone assessment and tailored interventions for managing anxiety in female PMD patients.

Designing advanced stationary phases to improve separation efficiency is essential in capillary electrochromatography. Due to their outstanding performance, covalent organic frameworks have recently demonstrated considerable promise in the field of separation science. Herein, an open-tubular capillary electrochromatography method was reported using porous imine-based covalent organic framework with sufficiently available interaction sites as stationary phase. The imine-based covalent organic framework coated capillary was easily prepared via an in situ growth method at room temperature, and its separation performance was evaluated, indicating the high separation efficiency for three types of analytes, including herbicides, polybrominated dibenzofurans, and bisphenols. Moreover, the imine-based covalent organic framework coated capillary showed good reproducibility and stability, with intraday (n = 3), interday (n = 3), and column-to-column (n = 3) relative standard deviations of retention time and peak areas of less than 5%. The separation efficiency of the coated capillary remained unchanged even after 200 runs and the maximum theoretical plates reached up to 85 595 N/m for 4,4'-ethylidenebisphenol. It was predicted that the imine-based covalent organic framework stationary phase would be a strong contender for chromatographic separation with high efficiency.

Wolbachia bacteria, inherited through the female germ line, infect a large fraction of arthropod species. Many Wolbachia strains manipulate host reproduction, most commonly through cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI). CI, a conditional male sterility, results when Wolbachia-infected male insects mate with uninfected females; viability is restored if the female is similarly infected (called "rescue"). CI is used to help control mosquito-borne viruses such as dengue and Zika, but its mechanisms remain unknown. The coexpressed CI factors CifA and CifB form stable complexes in vitro, but the timing and function of this interaction in the insect are unresolved. CifA expression in the female germ line is sufficient for rescue. We report high-resolution structures of a CI-factor complex, CinA-CinB, which utilizes a unique binding mode between the CinA rescue factor and the CinB nuclease; the structures were validated by biochemical and yeast growth analyses. Importantly, transgenic expression in Drosophila of a nonbinding CinA mutant, designed based on the CinA-CinB structure, suggests CinA expressed in females must bind CinB imported by sperm in order to rescue embryonic viability. Binding between cognate factors is conserved in an enzymatically distinct CI system, CidA-CidB, suggesting universal features in Wolbachia CI induction and rescue.

BACKGROUND: Government purchase of social forces to participate in old age care services can release the burden of social care. Current research on performance evaluation in this field mainly focussed on the establishment of appropriate evaluation indices. However, discussion on the policy implementation deviation is scarce. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of China's local government purchase of old age care services, analyse the characteristics of related policies and explore their deviation. METHODS: The persons who participated in the Training of the Trainer (ToT) organized by the Red Cross Society were enrolled. The policy documents were obtained from the official websites. The K-means cluster was used to determine the project performance grades. We compared the project performance grades between service objects and undertakers with different characteristics utilizing the non-parametric test. Based on the framework of 'Collaborative Participation - Project Performance Objective', we analysed the content of relevant policy aiding by NVivo 12. RESULTS: Data of project performance were collected from 306 participants. The standardized mean score of the efficiency dimension was the lowest (0.70 ± 0.24). The projects were divided into four grades: poor (17.0%), average (27.5%), good (12.4%) and excellent (43.1%). There were statistically significant differences in project performance grades only between advanced ageing groups (Z = 2.429, P = 0.015). As well, the policy also mentioned that the services focus should be tilted towards the oldest old. The purchasers mainly involved the Ministry of Civil Affairs and Health management departments in the policy. Respite services were less mentioned in the responsibilities of the undertakers. The requirement for efficiency and effectiveness was mentioned in less than half of the policy documents. CONCLUSION: Policy attention is needed for the responsibilities and functions of the intermediate purchasing force, as well as more precise directions and responsibilities of undertakers. The purchasers and undertakers should improve management abilities and capacity of old age care services and focus on associated factors to achieve the best marginal benefit. In addition, the embedded performance evaluation needs to be updated periodically to bridge the deviation between policy implementation and policy formulation.

A colorimetric strategy has been developed for the detection of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity based on the off-on effect of the catalytic activity of light-responsive oxidase mimics covalent organic framework (Cu-TpBpy-COF) in near-neutral condition. Cu-TpBpy-COF can effectively catalyze the oxidation of the colorless substrate 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by oxygen to form a blue oxidized product (oxTMB) with an absorption peak at 652 nm. Cu2+ is the active center of Cu-TpBpy-COF and pyrophosphate (PPi) can form a complex with Cu2+ to weaken the catalytic activity of Cu-TpBpy-COF. In the presence of ALP, PPi is hydrolyzed into orthophosphates (Pi) with low affinity to Cu2+, thus resulting in absorbance restoration. The absorbance at 652 nm is related to ALP activity in the linear range 10-150 U·L-1 with a detection limit of 7.17 U·L-1. The recoveries of ALP in serum samples are in the range 94.7~107.0% with relative standard deviations (RSD) lower than 5%. The decisive role of Cu2+ on the enhancing catalytic activities of Cu-TpBpy-COF in neutral condition was verified by TpBpy-COF and TpBD-COF as controls, in which the main difference between them is that TpBpy-COF contains pyridine nitrogen. Upon Cu2+ modification, Cu-TpBpy-COF has better catalytic activity than TpBpy-COF in a broader pH range because of the in situ generation of Cu+ under irradiation.

Discrimination and quantification of amino acid (AA) enantiomers are particularly important for diagnosing and treating diseases. Recently, dual-mode probes have gained a lot of research interest because they can catch more detecting information compared with the single-mode probes. Thus, it is of great significance to develop a dual-mode sensor realizing AA enantiomer discrimination conveniently and efficiently. In this work, carbon dot L-TCDs were prepared by N-methyl-1,2-benzenediamine dihydrochloride (OTD) and l-tryptophan. With the assistance of H2O2, L-TCDs show an excellent discrimination performance for enantiomers of glutamine (Gln) and valine (Val) in both fluorescent and colorimetric modes. The fluorescence enantioselectivity of Gln (FD/FL) and Val (FL/FD) is 5.29 and 4.13, respectively, and the colorimetric enantioselectivity of Gln (ID/IL) and Val (IL/ID) is 13.26 and 3.42, individually. The chiral recognition mechanism of L-TCDs was systematically studied. L-TCDs can be etched by H2O2, and the participation of AA enantiomers results in different amounts of the released OTD, which provides fluorescent and colorimetric signals for identifying and quantifying the enantiomers of Gln and Val. This work provides a more convenient and flexible dual-mode sensing strategy for discriminating AA enantiomers, which is expected to be of great value in facile and high-throughput chiral recognition.

Introducing inorganic fillers into organic poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO)-based electrolyte has attracted substantial attention to enhance its ionic conductivity and mechanical strength, but limited inorganic-organic interphases are always caused by isolated particles agglomeration. Herein, a variety of sandwich structured metal oxide/reduced graphene oxide(rGO)/metal oxide nanocomposites to optimize lithium-ion conduction by interconnected amorphous organic-inorganic interphases in lithium metal batteries, are proposed. With the support of high surface area rGO, the agglomeration of metal oxide particles is precluded, forming continuous amorphous organic-inorganic interphases with stacked layer-by-layer structure, thus creating 3D interconnected lithium-ion transportation channels vertically and laterally. Besides, metal oxide nanoparticles with hydroxyls possess high affinity toward bis(tri-fluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anions by hydrogen bindings between hydroxyls and fluorine and metal-oxygen bonds, releasing more free lithium ions. Consequently, PEO-ZnO/rGO/ZnO electrolyte delivers superior ionic conductivity of 1.02 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 25 °C and lithium-ion transference number of 0.38 at 60 °C. Furthermore, ZnO/rGO/ZnO insertion promotes the formation of LiF-rich stable solid electrolyte interface, endowing Li symmetric cells with long-term cycling stability over 900 hours. The corresponding LiFePO4 cathode possesses a high reversible specific capacity of 130 mAh g-1 at 0.5C after cycling 300 cycles with a poor capacity fading of 0.05% per cycle.

The possibilities of cross-species transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) between humans and important livestock species are not yet known. Herein, we used the structural and genetic alignment and surface potential analysis of the amino acid (aa) in angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), tyrosine kinase receptor UFO (AXL), and neuropilin 1 (NRP1) in different species with substantial public health importance. The residues interfacing with the N-terminal domain (NTD) or receptor-binding domain (RBD) of S were aligned to screen the critical aa sites that determined the susceptibility of the SARS-CoV-2 to the host. We found that AXL and NRP1 proteins might be used as the receptors of SARS-CoV-2 in bovines. However, ACE2 protein may not be considered to be involved in the cross-species transmission of SARS-CoV-2 VOCs in cattle because the key residues of the ACE2-S-binding interface were different from those in known susceptible species. This study indicated that emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants potentially expand species tropism to bovines through AXL and NRP1 proteins.

BACKGROUND: The possibilities of cross-species transmission of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs) between humans and poultry species are unknown. The analysis of the structure of receptor was used to investigate the potential of emerging SARS-CoV-2 VOCs to expand species tropism to chickens based on the interaction between Spike (S) protein and tyrosine kinase receptor UFO (AXL), angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), and neuropilin 1 (NRP1) with substantial public health importance. METHODS: The structural and genetic alignment and surface potential analysis of the amino acid (aa) in ACE2, AXL, and NRP1 in human, hamster, mouse, mink, ferret, rhesus monkey and chickens were performed by Swiss-Model and pymol software. The critical aa sites that determined the susceptibility of the SARS-CoV-2 to the host were screened by aligning the residues interfacing with the N-terminal domain (NTD) or receptor-binding domain (RBD) of Spike protein. RESULTS: The binding modes of chickens AXL and ACE2 to S protein are similar to that of the ferret. The spatial structure and electrostatic surface potential of NRP1 showed that SARS-CoV-2 VOCs could not invade chickens through NRP1 easily. CONCLUSION: These results suggested that emerging SARS-CoV-2 VOCs potentially expand the host range to chickens mainly through ACE2 and AXL receptors, while NRP1 receptor may rarely participate in the future epidemic of coronavirus disease 2019 in chickens.

Multi-targets detection has obtained much attention because this sensing mode can realize the detection of multi-targets simultaneously, which is helpful for biomedical analysis. Carbon nanoparticles have attracted extensive attention due to their superior optical and chemical properties, but there are few reports about red emission carbon nanoparticles for simultaneous detection of multi-targets. In this paper, a red emission fluorescent carbon nanoparticles were prepared by 1, 2, 4-triaminobenzene dihydrochloride at room temperature. The as-prepared red emission fluorescent carbon nanoparticles exhibited strong emission peak located at 635 nm with an absolute quantum yield up to 24%. They showed excellent solubility, high photostability and good biocompatibility. Furthermore, it could sensitively and selectively response to hypochlorite and pH, thus simultaneous detection of hypochlorite and pH was achieved by combining the red emission fluorescent carbon nanoparticles with computational chemistry. The formation mechanisms of red emission fluorescent carbon nanoparticles and their response to hypochlorite and pH were investigated, respectively.

The research of two-dimensional multiferroic materials has attracted extensive attention in recent years. In this work, we systematically investigated the multiferroic properties of semi-fluorinated and semi-chlorinated graphene and silylene X2M (X = C, Si; M = F, Cl) monolayers under strain using first principles calculations based on density functional theory. We find that the X2M monolayer has a frustrated antiferromagnetic order, and a large polarization with a high reversal potential barrier. When increasing the applied biaxial tensile strain, the magnetic order remains unchanged, but the polarization flipping potential barrier of X2M gradually decreases. When the strain increases to 35%, although the energy required to flip the fluorine and chlorine atoms is still very high in the C2F and C2Cl monolayers, it goes down to 312.5 meV and 260 meV in unit cells of the Si2F and Si2Cl monolayers, respectively. At the same time, both semi-modified silylenes exhibit metallic ferroelectricity with a band gap of at least 0.275 eV in the direction perpendicular to the plane. The results of these studies show that Si2F and Si2Cl monolayers may become a new generation of information storage materials with magnetoelectric multifunctional properties.

Phenyldivinylsulfonamides emerged from a series of divinylsulfonamides, demonstrating their ability to effectively re-bridge disulfide bonds. This kind of linkers was attached to monomethyl auristatin E (MMAE) and further conjugated with a model antibody, trastuzumab. After optimization, the linker 20 can deliver stable and highly homogenous DAR (Drug-to-Antibody Ratio) four antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs). The method was also applicable for other IgG1 antibodies to obtain ADCs with controlled four payloads. Moreover, the MMAE-bearing ADC is potent, selective and efficacious against target cell lines.

BACKGROUND: Medical students may feel severe psychological stress during COVID-19, which might impair their ability to sleep. This research aimed to look at the risk factors for sleep disturbance and the prevalence of sleep disturbance among medical students. METHODS: 538 medical students in total were recruited for this research. Anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbance were assessed using the Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). To evaluate the possible risk variables, we computed descriptive statistics for each assessment item and ran univariate and logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: Medical students had a 63.6% prevalence of sleep disturbance (n = 342). According to logistic regression, introverted students are 1.77 times more likely than extroverted students to have sleep disturbance (OR = 1.77, 95% CI 1.08-2.91). Medical students with depression had a 5.6-times higher risk of sleep disturbance than those without depression (OR = 5.60, 95% CI 3.43-9.15). Additionally, medical students with anxiety were 3.95 times more likely than those without anxiety to have sleep disturbance (OR = 3.95, 95% CI 2.04-7.64). CONCLUSIONS: According to this research, the COVID-19 pandemic caused significant sleep disturbance among medical students. Additionally, among medical students, introversion, anxiety, and depression were risk factors for sleep disturbance.

Metal-organic framework materials are a class of novel crystalline porous materials with regular pore structures formed by covalent bonding between metal centers and organic functional groups. Metal-organic framework materials have attracted great interest in analytical chemistry due to their unique properties such as good stability and permanent porosity. In this work, D-histidine was used to carry out chiral modification of zeolitic imidazolate framework-90 under mild conditions, and the D-histidine modified zeolitic imidazolate framework-90 coated capillary column was prepared. This chiral capillary column was used to separate epinephrine, norepinephrine, terbutaline, and tryptophan enantiomers. Under optimum conditions, baseline separations were achieved. The intra-day, inter-day, and inter-column relative standard deviations (n = 3) of the four pairs of enantiomeric migration times were 0.15%-0.56%, 0.74%-2.40%, and 1.93%-3.18%, respectively. Moreover, the D-histidine modified zeolitic imidazolate framework-90 coated capillary could be reused for at least 150 runs without significant changes in the separation efficiency and migration time.

BACKGROUND: The increasing prevalence of multimorbidity has created a serious global public health problem in aging populations. Certain multimorbidity patterns across different age ranges and their association with health status remain unclear. The main aim of this study is to identify multimorbidity patterns discrepancies and associated health status between younger-old and oldest-old. METHODS: The Ethics Committee of Nanjing Medical University approved the study protocol (No.2019-473). Convenience sampling method was used to recruit older adults aged ≥ 60 years with multimorbidity from July to December 2021 from 38 Landsea long-term care facilities in China. The multimorbidity patterns were analyzed using network analysis and two-step cluster analysis. One-Way ANOVA was utilized to explore their association with health status including body function, activity of daily living, and social participation. A Sankey diagram visualized the flow of health status within different multimorbidity patterns. This study is reported following the STROBE guidelines. RESULTS: A total of 214 younger-old (60-84 years) and 173 oldest-old (≥ 85 years) were included. Leading coexisting diseases were cardiovascular disease (CD), metabolic and endocrine disease (MED), neurological disease (ND), and orthopedic disease (OD). Cluster 1 (53, 24.8%) of CD-ND (50, 94.3%; 31, 58.8%), cluster 2 (39, 18.2%) of MED-ND-CD (39, 100%; 39, 100%; 37, 94.9%), cluster 3 (37, 17.3%) of OD-CD-MED-ND (37, 100%; 33, 89.2%; 27, 73.0%; 16, 43.2%), and cluster 4 (34, 15.9%) of CD-MED (34, 100%; 34, 100%) were identified in the younger-old. In the oldest-old, the primary multimorbidity patterns were: cluster 1 (33, 19.1%) of CD-respiratory disease-digestive disease-urogenital disease (CD-RD-DSD-UD) (32, 97.0%; 9, 27.3%; 8, 24.2%; 7, 21.2%), cluster 2 (42, 24.3%) of ND-CD-MED (42, 100%; 35, 83.3%; 14, 33.3%), cluster 3 (28, 16.2%) of OD-CD-MED (28, 100%; 25, 89.3%; 18, 64.3%), and cluster 4 (35, 20.2%) of CD-MED (35, 100%; 35, 100%). Younger-old with CD-ND or MED-ND-CD, and oldest-old with ND-CD-MED have worse health status compared with other multimorbidity patterns (e.g., CD-MED and OD-CD-MED). CONCLUSION: Discrepancies in common patterns of multimorbidity across age groups suggest that caregivers in long-term care facilities should consider changes in multimorbidity patterns with ageing when developing prevention plans for individualized management. Neurological disease concurrent with other diseases was the major determinant of health status, especially for the oldest-old. Interventions targeting multimorbidity need to be focused, yet generic. It is essential to assess complex needs and health outcomes that arise from different multimorbidity patterns and manage them through an interdisciplinary approach and consider their priorities to gain high-quality primary care for older adults living in long-term care facilities.

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is a ubiquitous human pathogen that can cause significant morbidity, primarily facial cold sores and herpes simplex encephalitis. Previous studies have shown that a variety of viruses can reprogram the metabolic profiles of host cells to facilitate self-replication. In order to further elucidate the metabolic interactions between the host cell and HSV-1, we used liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to analyze the metabolic profiles in human lung fibroblasts KMB17 infected with HSV-1. The results showed that 654 and 474 differential metabolites were identified in positive and negative ion modes, respectively, and 169 and 114 metabolic pathways that might be altered were screened. These altered metabolites are mainly involved in central carbon metabolism, choline metabolism, amino acid metabolism, purine and pyrimidine metabolism, cholesterol metabolism, bile secretion, and prolactin signaling pathway. Further, we confirmed that the addition of tryptophan metabolite kynurenine promotes HSV-1 replication, and the addition of 25-Hydroxycholesterol inhibits viral replication. Significantly, HSV-1 replication was obviously enhanced in the ChOKα (a choline metabolic rate-limiting enzyme) deficient mouse macrophages. These results indicated that HSV-1 induces the metabolic reprogramming of host cells to promote or resist viral replication. Taken together, these observations highlighted the significance of host cell metabolism in HSV-1 replication, which would help to clarify the pathogenesis of HSV-1 and identify new anti-HSV-1 therapeutic targets.

Wolbachia bacteria inhabit the cells of about half of all arthropod species, an unparalleled success stemming in large part from selfish invasive strategies. Cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI), whereby the symbiont makes itself essential to embryo viability, is the most common of these and constitutes a promising weapon against vector-borne diseases. After decades of theoretical and experimental struggle, major recent advances have been made toward a molecular understanding of this phenomenon. As pieces of the puzzle come together, from yeast and Drosophila fly transgenesis to CI diversity patterns in natural mosquito populations, it becomes clearer than ever that the CI induction and rescue stem from a toxin-antidote (TA) system. Further, the tight association of the CI genes with prophages provides clues to the possible evolutionary origin of this phenomenon and the levels of selection at play.
