RESUMO

Given the high prevalence of child undernutrition in Bangladesh, multi-sectoral approaches involving livelihood promotion have potential to mitigate the burden of undernutrition. This study examined the impact of an economic development (ED) program providing poultry assets, gardening skills and saving training added to the Positive Deviant (PD)/Hearth program (PDH/ED), compared to PD/Hearth only (PDH). A total of 1029 children who attended PD/Hearth sessions in September-November 2018 at 6-13 months of age were enrolled in the cohort study in July-August 2019. The cohort, comprised of 532 children in the PDH/ED group and 593 children in the PDH group, was reassessed in November 2020. The program impact on child nutrition, food security, crop production, dietary quality and household income was estimated using a difference-in-differences approach accounting for the sociodemographic differences between PDH/ED and PDH groups. Compared to the PDH group, the PDH/ED group showed increases in child dietary diversity score (DDS) (+0.32), child minimum dietary diversity (13.7 percentage points [pp]), and maternal DDS (+0.28) (all p < 0.05). From 2019 to 2020, the PDH/ED households improved food security by 12.6 pp and diversified crop production (bananas (9.7 pp), papaya (11.1 pp), carrots (3.8 pp) and lemons (5.9 pp)), and increased the proportion of annual income ≥60,000 Taka by 12.4 pp and last month income ≥5000 Taka by 7.8 pp, compared to PDH group (all p < 0.05). However, there was no impact on child nutritional status, morbidity, livestock ownership and total annual/last income. Incorporating an ED program into nutrition programming could benefit food security and dietary diversity in rural Bangladesh.

UV/ozone treated (UVO-treated) TaS2 and non-treated TaS2 nanosheets are introduced into organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs) as hole extraction layers (HEL) and electron extraction layers (EEL). TaS2 nanosheets are obtained via ultrasonic vibration and size-controlled by centrifugation. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) images reveal that the thickness and lateral size of TaS2 nanosheets are approximately 1 and 70 nm, indicating that uniform and ultrathin TaS2 nanosheets are obtained. The work function of TaS2 increases from 4.4 eV to 4.9-5.1 eV after applying UVO treatment by forming Ta2O5. In addition, the power conversion efficiencies of normal OPV with UVO-treated TaS2 and inverted OPV with TaS2 are 3.06 and 2.73%, which are higher than those of OPV without TaS2 (1.56% for normal OPV and 0.22% for inverted OPV). These results indicate that TaS2 is a promising material for HEL and EEL layers in OPVs.

This study assesses the impact of dual modification [octenyl succinylation (OSA) and heat-moisture treatment (HMT)] of sweet potato starch (SPS) on the physicochemical, mechanical, and permeability properties of SPS film. The intrinsic limitations of starch films, such as sensitivity to high humidity, inferior mechanical properties, and weak barrier capabilities, have restricted their use in sausage casings. Nonetheless, the dual-modified SPS film (OSA@HMT-SPS film) demonstrated significantly reduced solubility (P < 0.05), moisture content, water vapor permeability (WVP), and O2 permeability compared to the SPS film. Furthermore, its flexibility and elasticity, indicated by its elongation at break, was notably superior. When used as sausage casings, the OSA@HMT-SPS film effectively mitigated lipid oxidation in sausages better than both the SPS film and commercial collagen casings, owing to its low O2 permeability. As a result, the OSA@HMT-SPS casing presents significant promise as a plant-based sausage casing alternative.

Memristive neuromorphic computing has emerged as a promising computing paradigm for the upcoming artificial intelligence era, offering low power consumption and high speed. However, its commercialization remains challenging due to reliability issues from stochastic ion movements. Here, we propose an innovative method to enhance the memristive uniformity and performance through aliovalent halide doping. By introducing fluorine concentration into dynamic TiO2-x memristors, we experimentally demonstrate reduced device variations, improved switching speeds, and enhanced switching windows. Atomistic simulations of amorphous TiO2-x reveal that fluoride ions attract oxygen vacancies, improving the reversible redistribution and uniformity. A number of migration barrier calculations statistically show that fluoride ions also reduce the migration energies of nearby oxygen vacancies, facilitating ionic diffusion and high-speed switching. The detailed Voronoi volume analysis further suggests design principles in terms of the migrating species' electrostatic repulsion and migration barriers. This work presents an innovative methodology for the fabrication of reliable memristor devices, contributing to the realization of hardware-based neuromorphic systems.

Substantial evidence suggests a role for immunotherapy in treating Alzheimer's disease (AD). While the precise pathophysiology of AD is incompletely understood, clinical trials of antibodies targeting aggregated forms of ß amyloid (Aß) have shown that reducing amyloid plaques can mitigate cognitive decline in patients with early-stage AD. Here, we describe what we believe to be a novel approach to target and degrade amyloid plaques by genetically engineering macrophages to express an Aß-targeting chimeric antigen receptor (CAR-Ms). When injected intrahippocampally, first-generation CAR-Ms have limited persistence and fail to significantly reduce plaque load, which led us to engineer next-generation CAR-Ms that secrete M-CSF and self-maintain without exogenous cytokines. Cytokine secreting "reinforced CAR-Ms" have greater survival in the brain niche and significantly reduce plaque load locally in vivo. These findings support CAR-Ms as a platform to rationally target, resorb, and degrade pathogenic material that accumulates with age, as exemplified by targeting Aß in AD.

RESUMO

The Korean Working Conditions Survey (KWCS) is a state-approved statistical survey that has been conducted by the Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute (OSHRI) every 3 years since 2006 to monitor changes in the working conditions of Koreans. This cross-sectional national survey involves a sample of 50,000 employed people aged 15 or older. KWCS measures various working conditions through > 130 survey questions, including questions regarding working hours, labor intensity, work-life balance, degree of exposure to risk factors, and subjective health status. Professional survey interviewers visit households and conduct face to face interviews. KWCS provides data and statistics for occupational safety and health polices and research in Korea. Furthermore, OSHRI holds academic conferences every year, awards high-quality academic papers, and supports researchers using data. Microdata is publicly available through the OSHRI website (https://oshri.kosha.or.kr).

Schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis remain a public health concern in Tanzania. This study investigated the prevalence and intensities of Schistosoma haematobium, S. mansoni, and soil-transmitted helminths and associated factors in Itilima district, north-western Tanzania. A cross-sectional survey was conducted between August and September 2020 among 3779 primary schoolchildren in 62 primary schools and 1122 adults in 19 villages. Urine samples were obtained from each participant and examined visually for the presence of macrohaematuria, microhaematuria, and S. haematobium eggs using a urine dipstick and urine filtration test. A single stool sample was obtained from each participant and screened for S. mansoni and soil-transmitted helminths using the Kato Katz and formalin-ether concentration techniques. A questionnaire was administered to schoolchildren to elucidate the risk factors for schistosomiasis. The overall prevalence of S. haematobium in adults was 8.1% (95% confidence interval (CI), 6.6-9.8%). In total, 3779 schoolchildren had complete results from urine testing, and the overall prevalence of S. haematobium was 10.1% (95% CI, 9.1-11.1%). The prevalence of S. mansoni and soil-transmitted helminths was relatively low among both children and adults compared to S. haematobium. Factors associated with S. haematobium infection among schoolchildren were the mother's occupation, children aged 11-15 years, and water contact behaviour. The odds of having schistosomiasis infection among children aged 11-15 are 40% higher than those aged 5-10 (95% confidence interval (CI), 10-80%, p = 0.04). Children of parents who are livestock keepers have 12.3 times higher odds of having infection compared to those who have small-scale businesses (95% CI, 1.0-5.4, p = 0.03). Children who are in contact with infested water more than three times a week have 2.1 times higher odds of having an infection compared to those who do not (95% CI, 2.1; 1.6-2.8, p < 0.001). The findings provide updated geographical information on prevalence, yielding insights into the planning and implementation of mass drug administration in rural Tanzania.

Background: Reduced health and nutrition services as a result of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) measures endanger children's well-being. The Bangladesh Rajshahi Division of Maternal and Child Nutrition (BRDMCN; 2018-2020) involving social behavior change communication (SBCC) and an economic development (ED) of asset transfer was implemented. Objectives: This study describes how the implementation modality of the BRDMCN was adapted, and changes in the program's short/intermediate-term outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic compared with pre-pandemic. Methods: The following evaluation components were assessed: 1) program fidelity, 2) program reach, 3) program acceptance, 4) perceived influence of COVID-19, and 5) short-term outcomes over the 3 y. We compared the first 2 y ("pre-COVID-19," from April 2018 through December 2019) and the final year ("during COVID-19," from January to December 2020) for all components except for (3) and (4). Data were collected through multiple sources: reviews of program annual progress reports, monitoring records of SBCC and ED programs, and cohort surveys (n = 1094). Results: The percentage dose delivery of activities decreased from 66.7-118% at pre-COVID-19 to 0-90% during COVID-19. The SBCC programs were altered to reduce the frequency of activities as well as the number of participants per session. The ED program involving large group meetings was modified to include within-member meetings, individual visits of community facilitators, or virtual discussions. Production activity using received assets continued during the pandemic, with no significant reduction compared with pre-COVID-19. The percentage of children recovering from underweight after 30 d of a Positive deviance/Hearth (PD/Hearth) session, a component of the SBCC program, remained constant at 16.5-20.3 percentage points before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusions: Program activities were scaled back and changed due to the pandemic. The BRDMCN maintained asset management and the degree of short-term outcomes over the course of a 3-y project. Further study is required to determine whether adaptive program management would achieve the long-term expected impact at a population level.

Poor diet and undernutrition are common among children living in Bangladesh. To promote appropriate complementary feeding of young children, an economic development (ED) program involving income-generating asset transfer was implemented alongside a social and behavior change (SBC) program. This paper introduces a collaborative monitoring and evaluation (M&E) system in which diverse collaborators ("research group", "implementation team", and "coordinators") facilitate M&E data acquisition by leveraging their comparative advantages. The implementation team built a monitoring system to track the ED (n = 2960) and SBC participants (n=∼10,000) over 12 months. Based on the baseline design and the monitoring records, the collaborators planned an impact evaluation introducing a quasi-experimental design using two cross-sectional surveys and a prospective cohort survey of child feeding and nutritional status. Using various data sources generated from the M&E system, the collaborators will also reveal the program impact pathway through which each intervention component is delivered, received, and utilized alongside the context-specific facilitators and barriers, including the programs' uptake. The collaborative M&E system enables the sharing of program goals, strengthens collaborators' commitment to the program, and extends the understanding of the program's progress and evaluation activities.

Colanic acid (CA) is a major exopolysaccharide synthesized by Escherichia coli that serves as a constituent of biofilm matrices. CA demonstrates potential applications in the food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industry. Moreover, L-fucose, a monomeric constituent of CA, exhibits various physiological activities, such as antitumor, anti-inflammatory, and skin-whitening. Here, the effects of genetic and environmental perturbations were investigated for improving CA production by E. coli. When rcsF, a positive regulator gene of CA synthesis, was expressed in E. coli ΔwaaF, a CA-producing strain constructed previously, the CA titer increased to 3051.2 mg/L as compared to 2052.8 mg/L observed with E. coli ΔwaaF. Among the environmental factors tested, namely, osmotic and oxidative stresses and pH, pH was a primary factor that significantly improved CA production. When the pH of the culture medium of E. coli ΔwaaF + rcsF was maintained at 7, the CA titer significantly increased to 4351.6 mg/L. The CA yield obtained with E. coli ΔwaaF + rcsF grown at pH 7 was 5180.4 mg CA/g dry cell weight, which is the highest yield of CA reported so far. This engineered E. coli system with optimization of environmental conditions can be employed for fast and economically-feasible production of CA.

This study aimed to discriminate between the geographical origins of Asian red pepper powders distributed in Korea using Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy coupled with multivariate statistical analyses. Second-derivative spectral data were obtained from a total of 105 red pepper powder samples, 86 of which were used for statistical analysis, and the remaining 19 were used for blind testing. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test confirmed that eight peak variables exhibited significant origin-dependent differences, and the canonical discriminant functions derived from these variables were used to correctly classify all the red pepper powder samples based on their origins. The applicability of the canonical discriminant functions was examined by performing a blind test wherein the origins of 19 new red pepper powder samples were correctly classified. For simplicity, the four most significant variables were selected as discriminant indicator variables, and the applicable range for each indicator variable was set for each geographical origin. By applying the indicator variable ranges, the origins of the red pepper powders of all the statistical and blind samples were correctly identified. The study findings indicate the feasibility of using FT-IR spectroscopy in combination with multivariate analysis for identifying the geographical origins of red pepper powders.

Various health beneficial outcomes associated with red seaweeds, especially their polysaccharides, have been claimed, but the molecular pathway of how red seaweed polysaccharides are degraded and utilized by cooperative actions of human gut bacteria has not been elucidated. Here, we investigated the enzymatic and metabolic cooperation between two human gut symbionts, Bacteroides plebeius and Bifidobacterium longum ssp. infantis, with regard to the degradation of agarose, the main carbohydrate of red seaweed. More specifically, B. plebeius initially decomposed agarose into agarotriose by the actions of the enzymes belonging to glycoside hydrolase (GH) families 16 and 117 (i.e., BpGH16A and BpGH117) located in the polysaccharide utilization locus, a specific gene cluster for red seaweed carbohydrates. Then, B. infantis extracted energy from agarotriose by the actions of two agarolytic ß-galactosidases (i.e., Bga42A and Bga2A) and produced neoagarobiose. B. plebeius ultimately acted on neoagarobiose by BpGH117, resulting in the production of 3,6-anhydro-L-galactose, a monomeric sugar possessing anti-inflammatory activity. Our discovery of the cooperative actions of the two human gut symbionts on agarose degradation and the identification of the related enzyme genes and metabolic intermediates generated during the metabolic processes provide a molecular basis for agarose degradation by gut bacteria.

Colanic acid (CA) is one of the major bacterial exopolysaccharides. Due to its biological activities, CA has a significant commercial value. However, the cultivation conditions have not been optimized for the large-scale production of CA. Here, we constructed a CA-overproducing Escherichia coli strain (ΔwaaF) and statistically optimized its culture media for maximum CA production. Glucose and tryptone were found the optimal carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. Fractional factorial design indicated tryptone and Na2HPO4 as the critical nutrients for CA production. Through further optimization, we achieved a maximum CA production of 1910.0 mg/L, which is approximately 12-fold higher than the amount obtained using the non-optimized medium initially used. The predicted value of CA production was comparable with experimental value (2052.8 mg/L) under the optimized conditions. This study constitutes a successful demonstration of media optimization for increased CA production, and paves the way for future research for achieving large-scale CA production.

The roles of managers affect job stress and satisfaction. As irregular employees increase globally, more research is needed on the effects of managerial roles. This study analyzed job stress (subfactors: job autonomy and demand), job satisfaction, and managerial roles by employment type. Data comprised 33,420 cases from the fifth Korean Working Condition Survey. Regular employees had higher job autonomy and satisfaction fewer lower demands than irregular employees. For both, job autonomy positively and job demand negatively affected job satisfaction; the interaction of job autonomy and managerial roles negatively affected the relationship between job autonomy and satisfaction. In the relationship between job demand and satisfaction, the interaction of job demand and managerial roles had positive and negative effects for regular and irregular employees, respectively. The moderating effect of the interaction between job stress and managerial roles differed by employment type. Thus, managerial roles should differ by employment type. Guaranteed autonomy and minimal managerial intervention positively affect job satisfaction regardless of employment type. Appropriate managerial intervention relieves job stress and increases satisfaction for regular employees; managerial intervention negatively impacts irregular employees' satisfaction. Irregular employees should be provided with clear job expectations from the start, with minimal managerial intervention.
