RESUMO

The objective of this study was to construct a profile of managerial competencies, based on the consensus of nurse coordinators in the field. This study was developed in a philanthropic hospital in São Paulo, following the research-action model, and included 13 nurse coordinators as participants. The data collection was performed using the focal group technique. Data analysis was performed using the theoretical frameworks related to the working process and managerial competencies. The results identified the greater emphasis assigned to the competencies related to the mentor, coordinator and director roles. It was, therefore, possible to construct a professional development plan that is based on competencies in the technical, ethical-political, and communicative domains, as well as the development of citizenship. The analysis of the managerial working process and the study of the competencies within the managerial environment were shown to be important, because they highlighted the professionals' need to improve, thus fulfilling personal, professional, and organizational demands.

RESUMO

The adequate sizing of the nursing staff in intensive care units has been one of the main concerns for the nurses that work in them, in spite of different classification models for patients that have been proposed at the domestic and international levels. In the present case study, the goals were to establish the average time spent in direct nursing assistance in an ICU and to calculate the average number of hours of direct nursing assistance delivered to its patients. In order to do that, the first step was to classify the nursing procedures carried out with ICU patients according to their complexity: low, medium and high. Next, the average time spent in theses procedures was counted during a three-month period, in order to find out the average time of direct nursing assistance delivered to patients.

RESUMO

When it comes to dying and death each society has its own culture, habits, beliefs and values, which brings it closer to or draws it apart from others and gives its members guidance as to how they should behave and what they should or should not do in the face of them. The goal of this study was to identify the cultural conceptions regarding dying and death in the working context of Intensive Care Units (ICU) nursing professionals. The data were collected through individual interviews and a focal group and analyzed using qualitative techniques. The narratives show multiple determinant dimensions of the professional attitudes and actions that go beyond technical knowledge. It is evident that these professionals look for refuge in their beliefs and values in order to put up with such a burdensome work.

RESUMO

The study identifies and analyses social representations of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nursing staff about their work and how they express feelings of sorrow and pleasure associated to their job. The theoretical and methodological reference used by this study was the Theory of Social Representations. Interviews were carried out with auxiliary nursing personnel (licensed practical nurse and nurse technician). The data were analyzed by analysis-of-content technique, in particular the enunciation. The results indicate that ICU units causes much suffering, forcing nursing staff to utilize, individually, several defense mechanisms traditionally described by psychoanalysis and psychopathology.

RESUMO

The study had as objectives: the identification of the conceptual, methodological and pedagogical bases adopted in the teaching of Management in Nursing Schools in Brazil; the identification and characterization of managerial competences which have been developed in educational practices. The approach adopted was a quantitative-qualitative one, carried out in two moments: the first had as a scenario eight schools; the second had five, representing the five geo-political regions. Data was collected from the teaching guidelines, into consideration: objectives, hour load, duration, the moment of insertion, program content, pedagogical strategies and the form of evaluation. Results showed that, although there has been advancement in the conceptual bases, development of managerial competences is not made explicit in the teaching guidelines; moreover, the pedagogical proposals are traditional.

RESUMO

This is a qualitative study, which aims at identifying the representations of performance evaluation through the point of view of those who evaluate and those who are evaluated. Nurses, technicians and nurse assistants of a school hospital participated in the interviews and focal group. Results showed that evaluation which focused on practices, generated suffering, and the ones, which focused on the being, constituted a source of satisfaction and development for those involved in the process. We concluded that, despite the broadest social imperatives, it is possible to redirect attitudes in the work routine. Considering this perspective, performance evaluation can be a very important tool for developing new practices.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To identify factors producing new trends in basic health care unit management and changes in management models. METHODS: This was a prospective study with ten health care unit managers and ten specialists in the field of Health in São Paulo, Southeastern Brazil, in 2010. The Delphi methodology was adopted. There were four stages of data collection, three quantitative and the fourth qualitative. The first three rounds dealt with changing trends in management models, manager profiles and required competencies, and the Mann-Whitney test was used in the analysis. The fourth round took the form of a panel of those involved, using thematic analysis. RESULTS: The main factors which are driving change in basic health care units were identified, as were changes in management models. There was consensus that this process is influenced by the difficulties in managing teams and by politics. The managers were found to be up-to-date with trends in the wider context, with the arrival of social health organizations, but they are not yet anticipating these within the institutions. CONCLUSIONS: Not only the content, but the professional development aspect of training courses in this area should be reviewed. Selection and recruitment, training and assessment of these professionals should be guided by these competencies aligned to the health service mission, vision, values and management models.
