RESUMO

Potentilla species have been used in traditional medicine in the treatment of different ailment, disease or malady. Potentilla reptans (P. reptans) has been scarcely studied. The aim of this study was to test antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of P. reptans aerial part and rhizome. DPPH assay was used to measure antioxidant activity of aqueous plant extracts. Anti-inflammatory effect was evaluated by experimental animal model of phenol-in-acetone induced mice ear edema. DPPH radical-scavenging activity of both tested extracts was concentration dependent with IC50 values 12.11 µg/mL (aerial part) and 2.57 µg/mL (rhizome). Maximum anti-inflammatory effect (61.37%) was observed after administration of 10 mg/ear of the rhizome extract and it was 89.24% of effect induced by dexamethasone as a standard. In conclusion, P. reptans rhizome aqueous extract possesses anti-inflammatory effect and higher antioxidant activity than aerial part.

Acute and chronic wounds present a significant healthcare challenge, requiring innovative solutions for effective treatment. The exploitation of natural by-products with advanced cell regeneration potential and plant-based materials, which possess bioactive properties, is an innovative topic in wound management. This study investigates the potential of donkey gelatin and keratin for blending with natural bioactive extracts such as sumac, curcumin, and oak acorn to fabricate antioxidant and antimicrobial nanofibers with accelerated wound healing processes. The fabricated nanofibers possess good in vitro biocompatibility, except for the sumac-based donkey nanofibers, where cell viability significantly dropped to 56.25% (p < 0.05 compared to non-treated cells). The nanofiber dimensions showed structural similarities to human extracellular matrix components, providing an ideal microenvironment for tissue regeneration. The donkey nanofiber-based sumac and curcumin extracts presented a higher dissolution in the first 10 min (74% and 72%). Curcumin extract showed similar antimicrobial and antifungal performances to rivanol, while acorn and sumac extracts demonstrated similar values to each other. In vitro tests performed on murine fibroblast cells demonstrated high migration rates of 89% and 85% after 24 h in the case of acorn and curcumin nanofibers, respectively, underscoring the potential of these nanofibers as versatile platforms for advanced wound care applications.

Potentilla reptans L. belongs to the least studied of the plants from Rosaceae family, Potentilla genus. There are no data on cytotoxicity of P. reptans extracts, though traditionaly it was used as antiinflammatory and antiinfective. The aim of these studies was to investigate potential antitumor activity of aqueous extracts (rhizome and aerial parts) of P. reptans on 4T1 mouse breast cancer cell line. _Aqueous extracts of rhizome and aerial parts of P. reptans were tested for cytotoxicity by the MTT colorimetric assay on 4T1 cancer cell line in concentration range 100-800 microg/mL. Aqueous extracts of P. reptans rhizome and aerial parts show concentration dependent cytotoxic effect in the range of tested concentrations. ICE50 value of P. reptans rhizome extract was 280.51 +/- 1.16 microg/mL. IC50 value of P. reptans aerial parts extract was 310.79 +/- 1.22 microg/mL. The significant difference in cytotoxicity among tested concentrations was observed. Aqueous extracts of P. reptans rhizome and aerial parts demonstrated weak cytotoxic activity on 4T1 mouse breast cancer cell line, which is in correlation with current cytotoxicity data for aqueous herbal extracts. Rhizome extract of P. reptans has slightly higher antitumor activity than aerial parts extract. The results represent the first report on cytotoxicity for this plant and further research on human cell lines is indicated.

Since ancient times, many plants have been cultivated for their nutritional and medicinal properties. The genus Sanguisorba has been used for medicinal purposes for more than 2000 years. These species are distributed in temperate, arctic, or alpine areas in the Northern Hemisphere. Elongated, imparipinnate leaves and densely clustered flower heads are characteristics of the genus Sanguisorba. While Sanguisorba officinalis L. is mainly known for its significant medicinal applications, Sanguisorba minor Scop. is beginning to attract greater interest for its chemical composition and biological effects. Our research collected extensive information on Sanguisorba minor, including its history, taxonomy, habitat, and distribution, as well as its bioactive components and biological activities. In addition to electron microscopy of plant parts (root, stems, and leaves), which is described for the first time in the literature in the case of S. minor, the study also provides information on potential pests or beneficial insects that may be present. Our goal was to provide important information that will serve as a solid foundation for upcoming research on Sanguisorba minor Scop.

In the present study, a coffee-like beverage was prepared from Quercus cerris seeds. Seeds presented 60.4% carbohydrates (of which 26.9% is fiber), 6.3% proteins and 4.0% fat. In the coffee-like beverage, the TPC and TFC were 2070.2 mg GAE per L and 285.3 mg CEQ per L, respectively. The IC50 values determined using FRAP and DPPH assays were, respectively, 203.1 mg L-1 and 271.6 mg L-1. Concerning the reactive species scavenging capacity, the extract was more effective against O2˙-, HClO and ˙NO (namely, IC50 = 17.24 ± 0.24 µg mL-1, IC50 = 9.25 ± 0.92 µg mL-1 and IC50 = 0.65 ± 0.06 µg mL-1). Qualitative and quantitative analyses by 1D- and 2D-NMR and LC-MS indicated high levels of ellagic acid and gallotannin or ellagitannin derivatives. The optimal range of non-cytotoxic concentrations in Caco-2 and HT29-MTX cell lines was between 0.1 and 1.0 µg mL-1. This is the first study that evaluates the Q. cerris seed extract as a beverage.

This study considers the use of dry Jerusalem artichoke (JA) as a functional nutrient in developing food products with enhanced nutritional characteristics and low glycaemic index (GI). Three different formulations based on buckwheat and JA were developed and processed using extrusion technology. Nutritional properties including the levels of total dietary fibre (TDF), protein, inulin, total carbohydrates and lipids were analysed. A clinical study was performed on ten healthy volunteers (aged between 21 and 56) to determine the level of GI and glycaemic load (GL). The results revealed that JA significantly (P<0.05) increased the levels of TDF and inulin whilst decreasing carbohydrates, lipids and proteins. The resulting products had a significant (P<0.05) effect on IAUC between reference food and extruded products, GI and GL. Samples containing 80% of Jerusalem artichoke were considered as a low GI food whilst samples containing 30% and 60% of Jerusalem artichoke as a medium GI food. A similar trend was seen in terms of GL.

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a study on attitudes, knowledge, and use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies in Serbia. Available data about CAM therapies in the region are scarce, opinions lacking from health sector. Balkan region countries had a delay in issuing national policies on CAM therapies. METHODS: The questionnaire used was based on previously validated CAM Health Belief Questionnaire (CHBQ), formulated as 5-item Likert type scale, adjusted for local environment. Health care students and professionals were evaluated. The questionnaire comprehended 10 closed questions on attitudes, knowledge and use of CAM therapies. This survey was conducted in eight cities of Serbia, January 2010-July 2011. A total of 797 participants was included. The second group of participants was 145 healthcare professionals (50 academic staff, 64 clinical staff, 19 pharmacists, 6 other clinical branch specialists and 6 nurses). Data were collected by an interview. Examinees could acquire maximum of 70 points, 35 representing neutral attitude. RESULTS: Students of dentistry (54.65±6.07) were better informed on CAM therapies than medicine students (50.26±7.92). Pharmacy students (51.16±7.10) accepted low-scientific CAM. Pharmacists scored better than university professors (55.12±6.55 vs. 50.29±9.50). Primary health care professionals had better awareness than pharmacists in dispensing pharmacies. Both groups of participants preferred use of vitamins over any other CAM therapy. CONCLUSION: These pioneering efforts in the region exposed weaknesses in CAM attitudes of current and future health care professionals. Nevertheless, awareness on alternative medicine treatment choices is growing among Balkan prescribers. Supportive legal framework would facilitate dissemination of CAM medical practices.

Endothelin-1 induces contractions of human oviduct ampullar segment in follicular phase of menstrual cycle, acting on ET(A) receptors. The aim of our study was to investigate effects of endothelin-1, endothelin-2 and endothelin-3 on isolated ampullar segment of human oviducts, taken from the patients in luteal phase of menstrual cycle. Fallopian tubes were taken from 20 female patients (one tube from each patient) during abdominal hysterectomy with adnexectomy, due to extensive uterine fibroids. The oviduct ampulla was mounted in an organ bath longitudinally, and the tension of the isolated preparation was recorded with the isometric transducer. Endothelin-1 produced concentration-dependent tonic contraction of the isolated ampullar segment (EC(50)=6.80 +/- 1.2 x 10(-10)M), and concentration-dependent inhibition of its rhythmic contractions (EC(50)=7.86 +/- 2.3 x 10(-10)M). Endothelin-2 produced concentration-dependent tonic contraction of the isolated ampullar segment (EC(50)=4.56 +/- 0.3 x 10(-10)M), without affecting its rhythmic contractions. Endothelin-3 did not affect either tone or rhythmic contractions of the isolated preparations. Selective antagonist for ET(A) receptor subtype, BQ 123, produced inhibition of endothelin-1 effects on both tone (pA(2)=9.50) and spontaneous rhythmic contractions (pA(2)=10.73), while selective antagonist for ET(B) receptor subtype, BQ 788, produced only inhibition of endothelin-1 effects on tone (pA(2)=9.61), while the effect of endothelin-1 on spontaneous rhythmic contractions remained unaffected. The results of our study suggest that in the luteal phase both ET(A) and ET(B) receptors regulate tone, and only ET(A) receptors regulate rhythmic activity of human oviduct's ampullar segment.
