RESUMO

Recent studies have suggested that dogs were domesticated during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) in Siberia, which contrasts with previous proposed domestication centers (e.g. Europe, the Middle East, and East Asia). Ancient DNA provides a powerful resource for the study of mammalian evolution and has been widely used to understand the genetic history of domestic animals. To understand the maternal genetic history of East Asian dogs, we have made a complete mitogenome dataset of 120 East Asian canids from 38 archaeological sites, including 102 newly sequenced from 12.9 to 1 ka BP (1,000 years before present). The majority (112/119, 94.12%) belonged to haplogroup A, and half of these (55/112, 49.11%) belonged to sub-haplogroup A1b. Most existing mitochondrial haplogroups were present in ancient East Asian dogs. However, mitochondrial lineages in ancient northern dogs (northeastern Eurasia and northern East Asia) were deeper and older than those in southern East Asian dogs. Results suggests that East Asian dogs originated from northeastern Eurasian populations after the LGM, dispersing in two possible directions after domestication. Western Eurasian (Europe and the Middle East) dog maternal ancestries genetically influenced East Asian dogs from approximately 4 ka BP, dramatically increasing after 3 ka BP, and afterwards largely replaced most primary maternal lineages in northern East Asia. Additionally, at least three major mitogenome sub-haplogroups of haplogroup A (A1a, A1b, and A3) reveal at least two major dispersal waves onto the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in ancient times, indicating eastern (A1b and A3) and western (A1a) Eurasian origins.

Long-term application of green manure (GM) and nitrogen (N) fertilizers markedly improved soil fertility and boosted rice yield in ecologically fragile karst paddy fields. However, the precise response mechanisms of the soil bacterial community to varying amounts of green manure alone and in combination with N fertilizer in such environments remain poorly elucidated. In this study, we investigated the soil bacterial communities, keystone taxa, and their relationship with soil environmental variables across eight fertilization treatments. These treatments included group without N addition (N0M0, no N fertilizer and no GM; N0M22.5, 22.5 t/ha GM; N0M45, 45 t/ha GM, N0M67.5, 67.5 t/ha GM) and group with N addition (NM0, N fertilizer and no GM; NM22.5, N fertilizer and 22.5 t/ha GM; NM45, N fertilizer and 45 t/ha GM; NM67.5, N fertilizer and 67.5 t/ha GM). The results revealed that increasing green manure input significantly boosted rice yield by 15.51-22.08% and 21.84-35% in both the group without and with N addition, respectively, compared to N0M0 treatment. Moreover, with escalating green manure input, soil TN, AN, AK, and AP showed an increasing trend in the group without N addition. However, following the addition of N fertilizer, TN and AN content initially rose, followed by a decline due to the enhanced nutrient availability for rice. Furthermore, the application of a large amount of N fertilizer decreased the C: N ratio in the soil, resulting in significant changes in both the soil microbial community and its function. Particularly noteworthy was the transition of keystone taxa from their original roles as N-fixing and carbon-degrading groups (oligotrophs) to roles in carbon degradation (copiotrophs), nitrification, and denitrification. This shift in soil community and function might serve as a primary factor contributing to enhanced nutrient utilization efficiency in rice, thus significantly promoting rice yield.

Acute kidney injury is one of the most threatening diseases in neonates, with complex pathogenesis and limited treatment options. Caffeine is a commonly used central nervous system stimulant for treating apnea in preterm infants. There is compelling evidence that caffeine may have potential benefits for preventing neonatal acute kidney injury, but comprehensive reports are lacking in this area. Hence, this review aims to provide a summary of clinical data on the potential benefits of caffeine in improving neonatal acute kidney injury. Additionally, it delves into the molecular mechanisms underlying caffeine's effects on acute kidney injury, with a focus on various aspects such as oxidative stress, adenosine receptors, mitochondrial dysfunction, endoplasmic reticulum stress, inflammasome, autophagy, p53, and gut microbiota. The ultimate goal of this review is to provide information for healthcare professionals regarding the link between caffeine and neonatal acute kidney injury and to identify gaps in our current understanding.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the relationship between gut microbiota and neonatal acute kidney injury biomarkers based on the gut-kidney axis. STUDY DESIGN: The Pubmed database was primarily searched to include relevant literature on gut microbiota and neonatal acute kidney injury biomarkers, which was subsequently organized and analyzed and a manuscript was written. RESULTS: Gut microbiota was associated with neonatal acute kidney injury biomarkers. These biomarkers included TIMP-2, IGFBP-7, VEGF, calbindin, GST, B2MG, ghrelin, and clusterin. CONCLUSION: The gut microbiota is strongly associated with neonatal acute kidney injury biomarkers, and controlling the gut microbiota may be a potential target for ameliorating neonatal acute kidney injury. Accurate three-dimensional (3D) localization within indoor environments is crucial for enhancing item-based application services, yet current systems often struggle with localization accuracy and height estimation. This study introduces an advanced 3D localization system that integrates updated ultra-wideband (UWB) sensors and dual barometric pressure (BMP) sensors. Utilizing three fixed UWB anchors, the system employs geometric modeling and Kalman filtering for precise tag 3D spatial localization. Building on our previous research on indoor height measurement with dual BMP sensors, the proposed system demonstrates significant improvements in data processing speed and stability. Our enhancements include a new geometric localization model and an optimized Kalman filtering algorithm, which are validated by a high-precision motion capture system. The results show that the localization error is significantly reduced, with height accuracy of approximately ±0.05 m, and the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of the 3D localization system reaches 0.0740 m. The system offers expanded locatable space and faster data output rates, delivering reliable performance that supports advanced applications requiring detailed 3D indoor localization.

The challenge of precise dynamic positioning for mobile robots is addressed through the development of a multi-inertial navigation system (M-INSs). The inherent cumulative sensor errors prevalent in traditional single inertial navigation systems (INSs) under dynamic conditions are mitigated by a novel algorithm, integrating multiple INS units in a predefined planar configuration, utilizing fixed distances between the units as invariant constraints. An extended Kalman filter (EKF) is employed to significantly enhance the positioning accuracy. Dynamic experimental validation of the proposed 3INS EKF algorithm reveals a marked improvement over individual INS units, with the positioning errors reduced and stability increased, resulting in an average accuracy enhancement rate exceeding 60%. This advancement is particularly critical for mobile robot applications that demand high precision, such as autonomous driving and disaster search and rescue. The findings from this study not only demonstrate the potential of M-INSs to improve dynamic positioning accuracy but also to provide a new research direction for future advancements in robotic navigation systems.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal hyperoxic brain injury is caused by exposure to hyperphysiological oxygen content during the period of incomplete development of the oxidative stress defence system, resulting in a large number of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and causing damage to brain tissue. Mitochondrial biogenesis refers to the synthesis of new mitochondria from existing mitochondria, mostly through the PGC-1α/Nrfs/TFAM signalling pathway. Resveratrol (Res), a silencing information regulator 2-related enzyme 1 (Sirt1) agonist, has been shown to upregulate the level of Sirt1 and the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator-1α (PGC-1α). We speculate that Res has a protective effect on hyperoxia-induced brain injury through mitochondrial biogenesis. METHODS: Sprague-Dawley (SD) pups were randomly divided into the nonhyperoxia (NN) group, the nonhyperoxia with dimethyl sulfoxide (ND) group, the nonhyperoxia with Res (NR) group, the hyperoxia (HN) group, the hyperoxia with dimethyl sulfoxide (HD) group, and the hyperoxia with Res (HR) group within 12 h after birth. The HN, HD, and HR groups were placed in a high-oxygen environment (80‒85%), and the other three groups were placed in the standard atmosphere. The NR and HR groups were given 60 mg/kg Res every day, the ND and HD groups were given the same dose of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) every day, and the NN and HN groups were given the same dose of normal saline every day. On postnatal day (PN) 1, PN7, and PN14, brain samples were acquired for HE staining to assess pathology, TUNEL to detect apoptosis, and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction and immunoblotting to detect the expression levels of Sirt1, PGC-1α, nuclear respiratory factor 1 (Nrf1), nuclear respiratory factor 2 (Nrf2) and mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM) in brain tissue. RESULTS: Hyperoxia induced brain tissue injury; increased brain tissue apoptosis; inhibited Sirt1, PGC-1α, Nrf1, Nrf2, TFAM mRNA expression in mitochondria; diminished the ND1 copy number and ND4/ND1 ratio; and decreased Sirt1, PGC-1α, Nrf1, Nrf2, and TFAM protein levels in the brain. In contrast, Res reduced brain injury and attenuated brain tissue apoptosis in neonatal pups and increased the levels of the corresponding indices. CONCLUSION: Res has a protective effect on hyperoxia-induced brain injury in neonatal SD pups by upregulating Sirt1 and stimulating the PGC-1α/Nrfs/TFAM signalling pathway for mitochondrial biogenesis.

One of the most frequent issues in newborns is acute kidney injury (AKI), which can lengthen their hospital stay or potentially raise their chance of dying. The gut-kidney axis establishes a bidirectional interplay between gut microbiota and kidney illness, particularly AKI, and demonstrates the importance of gut microbiota to host health. Since the ability to predict neonatal AKI using blood creatinine and urine output as evaluation parameters is somewhat constrained, a number of interesting biomarkers have been developed. There are few in-depth studies on the relationships between these neonatal AKI indicators and gut microbiota. In order to gain fresh insights into the gut-kidney axis of neonatal AKI, this review is based on the gut-kidney axis and describes relationships between gut microbiota and neonatal AKI biomarkers.

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to investigate the effects of kangaroo mother care (KMC) on repeated procedural pain and cerebral oxygenation in preterm infants. STUDY DESIGN: Preterm infants of 31 to 33 weeks of gestational age were randomly divided into an intervention group (n = 36) and a control group (n = 37). Premature infant pain profile (PIPP) scores, heart rate, oxygen saturation, regional cerebral tissue oxygenation saturation (rcSO2), and cerebral fractional tissue oxygen extraction (cFTOE) were evaluated during repeated heel stick procedures. Each heel stick procedure included three phases: baseline, blood collection, and recovery. KMC was given to the intervention group 30 minutes before baseline until the end of the recovery phase. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, the intervention group showed lower PIPP scores and heart rates, higher oxygen saturation, and rcSO2 from the blood collection to recovery phases during repeated heel sticks. Moreover, there were significant changes in cFTOE for the control group, but not the intervention group associated with repeated heel stick procedures. CONCLUSION: The analgesic effect of KMC is sustained over repeated painful procedures in preterm infants, and it is conducive to stabilizing cerebral oxygenation, which may protect the development of brain function. OBJECTIVE: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia is a chronic lung disease in premature infants with alveolar simplification and pulmonary vascular development disorder as the main pathological feature and hyperoxia as the main etiology. Autophagy is a highly conserved cytological behavior of self-degrading cellular components and is accompanied by oxidative stress. Studies have reported that autophagy is regulated by FOXO1 posttranslational modification. However, whether autophagy can be involved in the regulation of endothelial cell injury induced by hyperoxia and its mechanism are still unclear. STUDY DESIGN: We have activated and inhibited autophagy in human umbilical vein endothelial cells under hyperoxia and verified the role of autophagy in endothelial cell-related functions from both positive and negative aspects. RESULTS: Our research showed that the expression level of autophagy-related proteins decreased, accompanied by decreased cell migration ability and tube formation ability and increased cell reactive oxygen species level and cell permeability under hyperoxia conditions. Using an autophagy agonist alleviated hyperoxia-induced changes and played a protective role. However, inhibition of autophagy aggravated the cell damage induced by hyperoxia. Moreover, the decrease in autophagy proteins was accompanied by the upregulation of FOXO1 phosphorylation and acetylation. CONCLUSION: We concluded that autophagy was a protective mechanism against endothelial cell injury caused by hyperoxia. Autophagy might participate in this process by coregulating posttranslational modifications of FOXO1. BACKGROUND: In December 2019, novel coronavirus pneumonia was detected in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, and as the epidemic spread, such cases emerged worldwide. Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) named a new mutant Omicron (B.1.1.529), which disrupts the binding of most antibodies to the S protein and has a greater ability to break through the vaccine, posing a serious risk to population safety. Positive pregnant women give birth to positive newborns despite appropriate isolation measures taken by medical staff, suggesting that we may have vertical transmission of the novel coronavirus. This article analyzes and studies the possible vertical transmission path of the new coronavirus in the perinatal period of pregnant women and the antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE), and puts forward effective preventive measures for positive pregnant women to provide further reference for clinical work. METHODS: We searched multiple databases, including PubMed, CNKI, Google Scholar, WHO COVID-19 database, and CDC database. Search terms included COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2, vertical transmission, Omicron, Vaginal, Breast Feeding, Vaccine, Neonatal, Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus, Pregnancy, and Semen. SELECTION CRITERIA: The following criteria were also met: (1) positive maternal novel coronavirus nucleic acid test; (2) reporting of neonatal outcome; (3) language in Chinese or English; (4) study date or location indicated; (5) no suspected or confirmed duplicated reports. RESULTS: There is evidence of vertical transmission, and the risk of possible vertical transmission is 5.7% (75/1314). The article listed four possible vertical transmission routes, namely placental transmission, vaginal upstream transmission, breastfeeding transmission and monocyte, and macrophage transmission route, with placental transmission being the most probable. Meanwhile, SARS-CoV-2 may also enter the placenta to infect the fetus through antibody-dependent enhanced substitution mechanism. We recommend three methods for early surveillance of vertical transmission, namely nucleic acid testing, antibody screening, and antigen testing, and analyze their advantages and disadvantages. Finally, the article provides recommendations in four areas: labor management, neonatal management, nosocomial infection prevention and control, and vaccination. As well as suggesting effective preventive measures for positive pregnant women and analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of vaccination, it is recommended that pregnant women should be vaccinated promptly, but considering that the vaccine may cause fever, it is recommended to consider vaccination cautiously in the first trimester of pregnancy. CONCLUSION: The article concludes that vertical transmission is possible, with placental transmission being the most likely, and that the risk of possible vertical transmission is 5.7% (75/1314). Good personal protection, patient isolation, ward disinfection, and vaccination are the best means of interrupting SARS-CoV-2.

BACKGROUND: A previous study showed that the lungs are involved in the biogenesis of platelets (PLTs). Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the association between bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), a chronic lung disease, and PLT parameters in very premature infants. METHODS: The study subjects were premature infants with a gestational age of ≤ 30 weeks and birth weight of ≤ 1500 g in a preterm birth cohort study recruited between January 1, 2015, and August 31, 2019. BPD was defined as the need for oxygen supplementation more than 28 days after birth. The PLT count, mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), and plateletcrit (PCT) level were compared between BPD and non-BPD infants. A generalized estimating equation model was used to adjust for confounding factors. A forward stepwise logistic regression model was used to calculate the adjusted odds ratio (OR) for thrombocytopenia in the BPD group. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was performed to assess the predictive value of PLT count combined with gestational age (GA) and birth weight (BW) for BPD. RESULTS: The final study subjects were 134 very premature infants, namely, 64 infants with BPD and 70 infants without BPD. The BPD infants had lower PLT counts (F = 4.44, P = 0.03) and PCT levels (F = 12.54, P = 0.00) than the non-BPD infants. However, the MPV (F = 14.25, P = 0.00) and PDW (F = 15.04, P = 0.00) were higher in the BPD group. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, the BPD infants had a higher risk of thrombocytopenia than the non-BPD infants (adjusted aOR 2.88, 95% CI 1.01-8.15), and the risk of BPD was increased in very premature infants with a PLT count ≤ 177*109/L (OR 4.74, 95% CI 1.93-11.62) at the end of the second week. In the multivariate predictive model, it was showed that the AUC area (0.85), sensitivity (0.88), specificity (0.70) and Youden index (0.58) are improved using PLT counts ≤ 177*109/L combined with GA and BW. CONCLUSIONS: Abnormal PLT parameters were observed in BPD infants, and a PLT count ≤ 177*109/L was a potential risk factor for the development of BPD in very premature infants.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is one of serious gastrointestinal inflammatory diseases in newborn infants, with a high morbidity and mortality. Red blood cell transfusion (RBCT) plays a controversial and doubtful role in the treatment of NEC. In present study, we aim to analyze the association between RBCT and the deterioration of NEC. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of near-term and full-term infants with a confirmed diagnosis of Bell's stage II NEC between Jan 1, 2010 and Jan 31, 2020. The maternal and infant baseline characteristics, treatment information and laboratory test for each case were collected. The eligible subjects were divided into two groups based on receiving RBCT post NEC diagnosis or not. The propensity score was used to eliminate potential bias and baseline differences. A multivariate logistic regression model was used to adjust the propensity score and calculate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidential interval (CI) of RBCT for the deterioration of NEC. RESULTS: A total of 242 infants were included in this study, 60 infants had a history of RBCT post NEC diagnosis, and 40 infants deteriorated from Bell's stage II to stage III. By adjusting the propensity score, RBCT post NEC diagnosis was associated with an increased risk for NEC deteriorating from stage II to III (adjusted OR 6.06, 95%CI 2.94-12.50, P = 0.000). CONCLUSIONS: NEC infants who required RBCT post NEC diagnosis were more likely to deteriorate from stage II to III in full-term and near-term infants.

With recent advances in neonatal intensive care, preterm infants are surviving into adulthood. Nonetheless, epidemiological data on the health status of these preterm infants have begun to reveal a worrying theme; prematurity and the supplemental oxygen therapy these infants receive after birth appear to be risk factors for kidney disease in adulthood, affecting their quality of life. As the incidence of chronic kidney disease and the survival time of preterm infants both increase, the management of the hyperoxia-induced renal disease is becoming increasingly relevant to neonatologists. The mechanism of this increased risk is currently unknown, but prematurity itself and hyperoxia exposure after birth may predispose to disease by altering the normal trajectory of kidney maturation. Hearing loss is one of the most common congenital defects in infancy; it increases speech and language delays and adversely affects academic achievement and socialemotional development. The risk of hearing loss in premature infants is higher than that in normal newborns, and because of the fragility of the auditory nervous system, it is more vulnerable to different risk factors. The hearing screening guidelines in current use were proposed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and updated in 2007, but there are no uniform guidelines for hearing screening in preterm infants. This review focuses on the risk factors related to hearing loss in premature infants, hearing screening strategies, and reasons for failure. The aim is to provide a more comprehensive understanding of hearing development in preterm infants to achieve early detection and early intervention. At the same time, attention should be paid to delayed auditory maturation in preterm infants to avoid excessive intervention. OBJECTIVES: Our previous study showed that resveratrol (Res) attenuates apoptosis and mitochondrial dysfunction in alveolar epithelial cell injury induced by hyperoxia by activating the SIRT1/PGC-1α signaling pathway. In the present study, we investigated whether Res protects against hyperoxia-induced lung injury in neonatal rats by activating SIRT1/PGC-1α signaling pathway. METHODS: Naturally delivered neonatal rats were randomly divided into six groups: normoxia + normal saline, normoxia + dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), normoxia + Res, hyperoxia + normal saline, hyperoxia + DMSO, and hyperoxia + Res. Lung tissue samples were collected on postnatal days 1, 7, and 14. Hematoxylin and eosin staining was used to evaluate lung development. Dual-immunofluorescence staining, real-time polymerase chain reaction, and western blotting were used to evaluate the levels of silencing information regulator 2-related enzyme 1 (SIRT1), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ co-activator 1α (PGC-1α), nuclear respiratory factor 1 (Nrf1), Nrf2, transcription factor A (TFAM) and citrate synthase, the number of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and mitochondria, the integrity of mtDNA, and the expression of TFAM in mitochondria. RESULTS: We found that hyperoxia insulted lung development, whereas Res attenuated the hyperoxia lung injury. Res significantly upregulated the levels of SIRT1, PGC-1α, Nrf1, Nrf2, TFAM, and citrate synthase; promoted TFAM expression in the mitochondria; and increased the copy number of ND1 and the ratio of ND4/ND1. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that Res attenuates hyperoxia-induced lung injury in neonatal rats, and this was achieved, in part, by activating the SIRT1/PGC-1α signaling pathway to promote mitochondrial biogenesis. OBJECTIVE: Neonatal rats with hyperoxia-induced brain injury were treated with resveratrol to investigate its protective effects through analyzing changes in reactive oxygen species (ROS), Sirt1, p53, and acetylated p53 levels. STUDY DESIGN: Neonatal rats were randomly divided into hyperoxia and resveratrol intervened groups. Rats in both groups were placed in a hyperoxia chamber for 7 days to induce hyperoxia-induced brain injury. The rats in the resveratrol intervened group were administered resveratrol 60 µg/g body weight daily, whereas those in the hyperoxia group were administered a dimethyl sulfoxide-based solvent. Brain tissues were collected, and hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and TUNEL staining, ROS measurements, real time-polymerase chain reaction, and western blotting were performed. RESULTS: H&E and TUNEL staining revealed increased cell damage and apoptosis in brain tissue from hyperoxia-exposed animals compared with the findings in animals in the resveratrol intervened group. Real time-polymerase chain reaction and western blotting identified increases in Sirt1 expression and decreases in p53 expression in the resveratrol intervened group. In addition, acetylated p53 protein expression was lower in the intervened group than in the hyperoxia group. CONCLUSION: Resveratrol alleviated brain apoptosis induced by hyperoxia in neonatal rats by upregulating Sirt1-mediated pathways, suggesting its potentially beneficial role in the treatment of brain injury induced by hyperoxia.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of oral motor intervention (OMI) on brain function development in preterm infants. METHODS: A total of 112 preterm infants were stratified into small-gestational-age (30-31+6 weeks) and large-gestational-age (32-33+6 weeks) according to gestational age at birth. The preterm infants were randomly divided into a control group and an intervention group, with 56 infants in each group. The infants in the control group were given routine treatment and nursing, while those in the intervention group were given OMI in addition to the treatment and nursing in the control group. Amplitude-integrated EEG (aEEG) and Neonatal Behavioral Neurological Assessment (NBNA) were performed on days 1, 7, and 14 of enrollment, and the level of brain function development was compared before and after intervention. RESULTS: On day 7 of OMI, the small-gestational-age intervention group had lower upper bounds of voltage and bandwidth and a higher aEEG score than the small-gestational-age control group (P < 0.05). Compared with the small-gestational-age control group, the small-gestational-age intervention group had higher upper bound of voltage, percentage of mature sleep-wake cycle, aEEG score, and NBNA score and a lower narrow bandwidth on day 14 of OMI (P < 0.05). Compared with the large-gestational-age control group, the large-gestational-age intervention group had lower upper voltage and voltage difference and higher lower bound of voltage and aEEG score on days 7 and 14 of OMI (P < 0.05). On day 7 of OMI, the large-gestational-age intervention group had a higher NBNA score than the large-gestational-age control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: OMI can promote the maturation of aEEG background activities, improve neurobehavioral manifestations, and accelerate brain function development in preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the effects of different body positions and head elevation angles on regional cerebral oxygen saturation in premature infants using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). METHODS: This was a prospective study of premature infants hospitalized. The position was changed each feeding cycle (2-3 h), in order: 15° prone, 15° supine, 0° prone, and 0° supine position. Regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO2) was measured after each position period using NIRS, over 7 days. FINDINGS: Thirty-three premature infants were included in the analysis. Among them, 22 (66.7%) were male, and 11 (33.3%) were female. When placing the premature infants in the prone position, the regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO2) values were higher at head elevation 15° compared with 0° (main effect P < 0.001). When placing the premature infants in the supine position, rSO2 was higher at a head elevation of 15° compared with that at 0° (main effect P < 0.001). When placing the premature infants with a head elevation of 15°, rSO2 in the prone position was higher than that of the supine position (main effect P < 0.001). There was no difference between the prone and supine positions when placing the premature infants with the head elevation at 0° (P > 0.05). DISCUSSION: Higher cerebral rSO2 can be achieved when placing premature infants in the prone or supine position, with a 15° head elevation angle. APPLICATION TO PRACTICE: Using a specific body position and head angle could improve the regional cerebral oxygen saturation of premature infants.

BACKGROUND: Serum bilirubin levels are inversely associated with obesity in adults. We are interested in whether neonatal jaundice is associated with childhood obesity in preterm infants. METHODS: Data were obtained from the US Collaborative Perinatal Project. Neonatal bilirubin levels were used as exposure factors for obesity at age 7 years. Logistic regression models were used to control for potential confounders and calculate odds ratios (ORs). A generalized estimating equation (GEE) model was used to correct for intracluster correlation coefficient. SAS was used for all statistical analyses. RESULTS: In the study subjects, 865 of 5019 preterm infants were obese at age 7 years. While neonatal total serum bilirubin (TSB) rose 1 mg/dl, body mass index (BMI) increased 0.03 kg/m2 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.02, 0.04). Compared with infants with TSB <3 mg/dl, the ORs (95% CIs) for obesity in infants with 3 mg/dl≤ TSB <6 mg/dl, 6 mg/dl≤ TSB <9 mg/dl, 9 mg/dl≤ TSB <12 mg/dl and TSB ≥12 mg/dl were, respectively, 1.18 (0.87, 1.59), 1.25 (0.93, 1.67), 1.52 (1.11, 2.09), and 1.67 (1.22, 2.07). By using subtypes of bilirubin as exposure factors and the GEE model to correct for intracluster correlation coefficient, similar trends of associations were observed. CONCLUSION: Neonatal bilirubin levels have positive trends of associations with childhood obesity in preterm infants.
