BACKGROUND: Supratrochlear (STA), supraorbital (SOA), and dorsal nasal artery (DNA) branches from the ophthalmic artery and angular artery (AA) from the facial artery are the primary suppliers of blood to the upper face. Filler injection without precise knowledge of its vascular topography poses a risk of severe complications. METHODS: Seventy-four hemifaces from 37 subjects with a median age of 25.0 (21.0, 35.0) years and a median body mass index of 21.2 (20.0, 25.4) kg/m2 underwent high-frequency ultrasound tests between March 2022 and April 2022. The bilateral location, depth, peak systolic velocity (PSV), and inner diameter (ID) of the four periorbital arteries (STA, SOA, DNA, AA) were measured. RESULTS: The average ID ranges from 0.6~1.0 mm, and the average PSV ranges from 9.2~24.9 cm/s. All arteries detected passed through the superficial subcutaneous fascia. Most subjects' STAs traveled within 1.0 to 2.0 cm from the midline (left 96.8%, right 93.8%), while SOAs were mainly concentrated within 2.0 to 4.0 cm (left 83.9%, right 81.3%). STAs were more superficial and had a larger internal ID and PSV than SOAs (p<0.001). Except for the ID of the right SOA2 being significantly larger than that of the left SOA2 (p<0.05), no dominant side was found. The depth of STAs and SOAs was moderately correlated with BMI (p<0.05), except for STA1 on the left side. The course of AAs presented a high variability. CONCLUSION: These findings emphasize that the periorbital arteries carry with it a likelihood of ocular complication risks during injection. Targeting the supraperiosteal layer in the STA area and the supramuscular layer in the SOA area of the inferior forehead during injection seems reasonable, and an area within 1.0~2.0 cm from the midline should be avoided. Additionally, the high variability of AAs will enhance the understanding of the anatomy of the facial artery terminals. Background: Previous studies found that increasing vegetable intake benefits are reduced after adjustment for socioeconomic factors. Using genetic variation as an instrumental variable for vegetable intake and socioeconomic status, we investigated the relationship between vegetable intake and ischemic cardio-cerebral vascular diseases and focused on whether socioeconomic status was a possible confounder. Methods: From three independent genome-wide association studies, we extracted instrumental variables reflecting raw and cooked vegetable intake, which were used to perform Mendelian randomization analysis. To evaluate the effects of socioeconomic factors on vegetable intake, univariate and multivariate Mendelian randomization analyses were performed using single nucleotide polymorphisms representing education attainment and household income reported in the literature. We also performed outlier assessment and a series of sensitivity analyses to confirm the results. Results: Genetically predicted raw and cooked vegetable intake were not associated with any ischemic cardio-cerebral vascular diseases and lipid components after Bonferroni correction. Univariate Mendelian randomized analysis revealed that raw vegetable intake was positively correlated with education attainment (ß = 0.04, p = 0.029) and household income (ß = 0.07, p < 0.001). Multivariate Mendelian randomized model showed a positive correlation between household income and raw vegetable intake (ß = 0.06, p = 0.004). Socioeconomic status was closely associated with eating habits and lifestyle related to the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Conclusion: Genetically determined raw and cooked vegetable intake was not associated with significant benefits in terms of ischemic cardio-cerebral vascular diseases while genetically determined socioeconomic status may have an impact on vegetable intake. Socioeconomic status, which was closely associated with other eating habits and lifestyle, may affect the association between vegetable intake and ischemic cardio-cerebral vascular diseases.

Low temperature is the main factor for global natural disasters affecting the growth and distribution of plants, and cotton may be affected by low temperature and cold damage at all growth stages. In addition, the insecticidal resistance of cultivars has been reported to perform poorly or unstably due to adverse environments. The present study aimed to investigate the impact of low temperature on the levels of insecticidal protein in Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) transgenic cotton plants during the peak boll stage. To achieve this, two Bt cotton cultivars, Sikang1 (SK1) and Sikang3 (SK3), were subjected to different temperature regimes and durations. The findings of the study demonstrated that the expression of insecticidal protein in the boll shell of Bt transgenic cotton plants was significantly inhibited under low-temperature stress. Specifically, in 2020, compared to the CK (27 °C), the insecticidal protein content in the boll shell of SK3 decreased by 28.19% after a 48 h of a 16 °C temperature. These results suggest that low-temperature stress can negatively impact the expression of insecticidal protein in Bt transgenic cotton, highlighting the need for appropriate measures to minimize its adverse effects on cotton production. In addition, the threshold temperature that leads to a significant decrease in the content of insecticidal proteins symbolizes an upward trend as the duration of stress prolongs. Decreased Bt protein content at low temperatures is associated with changes in the N metabolism. The present study revealed a significant positive correlation between the levels of glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT) and glutamate pyruvate transaminase (GPT) activities, as well as in the soluble protein levels in the boll shell and the content of the Bt protein. On the other hand, a significant negative correlation was observed between the levels of free amino acids, peptidase, and protease activities, as well as of Bt protein content. These findings suggest that, in Bt cotton production, it is crucial to remain vigilant of prolonged low-temperature disasters, which last for over 12 h and drop below 17-20 °C during the peak boll stage. Such conditions may reduce insecticidal resistance, leading to substantial economic losses.

Meniscus damage is a common trauma that often arises from sports injuries or menisci tissue degeneration. Current treatment methods focus on the repair, replacement, and regeneration of the meniscus to restore its original function. The advance of tissue engineering provides a novel approach to restore the unique structure of the meniscus. Recently, mesenchymal stem cells found in tissues including bone marrow, peripheral blood, fat, and articular cavity synovium have shown specific advantages in meniscus repair. Although various studies explore the use of stem cells in repairing meniscal injuries from different sources and demonstrate their potential for chondrogenic differentiation, their meniscal cartilage-forming properties are yet to be systematically compared. Therefore, this review aims to summarize and compare different sources of mesenchymal stem cells for meniscal repair and regeneration.

BACKGROUND: The combination of navigational system and robotics has the potential to accurately identify and drill bone tunnels in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. This study explores the feasibility and accuracy of bone tunnel positioning using the TiRobot, an orthopaedic surgical robot. METHODS: The experiment was divided into two groups. In group A, the bone tunnels were positioned using the TiRobot surgical robot (n = 8). In group B, handheld locators were used for positioning (n = 8). RESULTS: TiRobot can be used for positioning the ACL bone tunnel. The accuracy of positioning the femoral tunnel in group A and B was 1.00 ± 0.20 and 3.10 ± 0.59 mm, respectively (t = -9.49, P < 0.001). As for tibial tunnel, the accuracy was 1.02 ± 0.20 and 2.64 ± 0.14 mm, respectively (t = -18.54, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The bone tunnel drilling precision using TiRobot for ACL reconstruction surgery was more accurate than traditional surgical techniques.
