BACKGROUND AND AIM: Endoscopic ultrasound-guided gastroenterostomy is a procedure used to connect the stomach and dilated afferent loop using a stent under endoscopic ultrasound for afferent loop syndrome. However, the actual efficacy and safety of this procedure remain unclear. Therefore, this retrospective study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of endoscopic ultrasound-guided gastroenterostomy using a laser-cut-type fully covered self-expandable metallic stent and an anchoring plastic stent for afferent loop syndrome. METHODS: Technical and clinical success rates, adverse events, recurrent intestinal obstruction rates, time to recurrent intestinal obstruction, and technical and clinical success rates of re-intervention were evaluated in intended patients who underwent endoscopic ultrasound-guided gastroenterostomy for afferent loop syndrome from October 2018 to August 2022. RESULTS: In 25 intended patients with afferent loop syndrome who intended endoscopic ultrasound-guided gastroenterostomy, the technical success rate was 100% (25/25), whereas the clinical success rate was 96% (24/25). Two patients experienced grade ≥ 3 early adverse events, including one with intra-abdominal abscess and one with hypotension. Both events were attributed to intestinal fluid leakage. No late adverse events were observed. The recurrent intestinal obstruction rate was 32% (8/25), and the median time to recurrent intestinal obstruction was 6.5 months (95% confidence interval: 2.8-not available). The technical and clinical success rates of re-intervention were both 100% (8/8). CONCLUSIONS: Endoscopic ultrasound-guided gastroenterostomy using a fully covered self-expandable metallic stent and an anchoring plastic stent is effective and safe as a treatment procedure for afferent loop syndrome.

Whole-genome duplication and genome compaction are thought to have played important roles in teleost fish evolution. Ayu (or sweetfish), Plecoglossus altivelis, belongs to the superorder Stomiati, order Osmeriformes. Stomiati is phylogenetically classified as sister taxa of Neoteleostei. Thus, ayu holds an important position in the fish tree of life. Although ayu is economically important for the food industry and recreational fishing in Japan, few genomic resources are available for this species. To address this problem, we produced a draft genome sequence of ayu by whole-genome shotgun sequencing and constructed linkage maps using a genotyping-by-sequencing approach. Syntenic analyses of ayu and other teleost fish provided information about chromosomal rearrangements during the divergence of Stomiati, Protacanthopterygii and Neoteleostei. The size of the ayu genome indicates that genome compaction occurred after the divergence of the family Osmeridae. Ayu has an XX/XY sex-determination system for which we identified sex-associated loci by a genome-wide association study by genotyping-by-sequencing and whole-genome resequencing using wild populations. Genome-wide association mapping using wild ayu populations revealed three sex-linked scaffolds (total, 2.03 Mb). Comparison of whole-genome resequencing mapping coverage between males and females identified male-specific regions in sex-linked scaffolds. A duplicate copy of the anti-Müllerian hormone type-II receptor gene (amhr2bY) was found within these male-specific regions, distinct from the autosomal copy of amhr2. Expression of the Y-linked amhr2 gene was male-specific in sox9b-positive somatic cells surrounding germ cells in undifferentiated gonads, whereas autosomal amhr2 transcripts were detected in somatic cells in sexually undifferentiated gonads of both genetic males and females. Loss-of-function mutation for amhr2bY induced male to female sex reversal. Taken together with the known role of Amh and Amhr2 in sex differentiation, these results indicate that the paralog of amhr2 on the ayu Y chromosome determines genetic sex, and the male-specific amh-amhr2 pathway is critical for testicular differentiation in ayu.

BACKGROUND: Locally advanced pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), accounting for about 30% of PDAC patients, is difficult to cure by radical resection or systemic chemotherapy alone. A multidisciplinary strategy is required and our TT-LAP trial aims to evaluate whether triple-modal treatment with proton beam therapy (PBT), hyperthermia, and gemcitabine plus nab-paclitaxel is a safe and synergistically effective treatment for patients with locally advanced PDAC. METHODS: This trial is an interventional, open-label, non-randomized, single-center, single-arm phase I/II clinical trial organized and sponsored by the University of Tsukuba. Eligible patients who are diagnosed with locally advanced pancreatic cancer, including both borderline resectable (BR) and unresectable locally advanced (UR-LA) patients, and selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria will receive triple-modal treatment consisting of chemotherapy, hyperthermia, and proton beam radiation. Treatment induction will include 2 cycles of chemotherapy (gemcitabine plus nab-paclitaxel), proton beam therapy, and 6 total sessions of hyperthermia therapy. The initial 5 patients will move to phase II after adverse events are verified by a monitoring committee and safety is ensured. The primary endpoint is 2-year survival rate while secondary endpoints include adverse event rate, treatment completion rate, response rate, progression-free survival, overall survival, resection rate, pathologic response rate, and R0 (no pathologic cancer remnants) rate. The target sample size is set at 30 cases. DISCUSSION: The TT-LAP trial is the first to evaluate the safety and effectiveness (phases1/2) of triple-modal treatment comprised of proton beam therapy, hyperthermia, and gemcitabine/nab-paclitaxel for locally advanced pancreatic cancer. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This protocol was approved by the Tsukuba University Clinical Research Review Board (reference number TCRB22-007). Results will be analyzed after study recruitment and follow-up are completed. Results will be presented at international meetings of interest in pancreatic cancer plus gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, and pancreatic surgeries and published in peer-reviewed journals. It is known that the bone matrix plays an important role in the response to physical stresses such as hypergravity and microgravity. In order to accurately analyze the response of bone to hypergravity and microgravity, a culture system under the conditions of coexistence of osteoclasts, osteoblasts, and bone matrix was earnestly desired. The teleost scale is a unique calcified organ in which osteoclasts, osteoblasts, and the two layers of bone matrix, i.e., a bony layer and a fibrillary layer, coexist. Therefore, we have developed in vitro organ culture systems of osteoclasts and osteoblasts with the intact bone matrix using goldfish scales. Using the scale culture system, we examined the effects of hypergravity with a centrifuge and simulated ground microgravity (g-µG) with a three-dimensional clinostat on osteoclasts and osteoblasts. Under 3-gravity (3G) loading for 1 day, osteoclastic marker mRNA expression levels decreased, while the mRNA expression of the osteoblastic marker increased. Upon 1 day of exposure, the simulated g-µG induced remarkable enhancement of osteoclastic marker mRNA expression, whereas the osteoblastic marker mRNA expression decreased. In response to these gravitational stimuli, osteoclasts underwent major morphological changes. By simulated g-µG treatments, morphological osteoclastic activation was induced, while osteoclastic deactivation was observed in the 3G-treated scales. In space experiments, the results that had been obtained with simulated g-µG were reproduced. RNA-sequencing analysis showed that osteoclastic activation was induced by the down-regulation of Wnt signaling under flight-microgravity. Thus, goldfish scales can be utilized as a bone model to analyze the responses of osteoclasts and osteoblasts to gravity.

The first total synthesis of terpioside B (1) has been accomplished. Key steps include the stereoselective installments of a set of challenging 1,2-cis-glycosidic linkages. Thus, α(1,4)-linked d-galactoside was effectively constructed from a 1,2-anhydrogalactose donor and an unprotected 1,6-anhydrogalactose acceptor by using a boron-mediated aglycon delivery (BMAD) method. In addition, α-l-fucofuranosides were stereoselectively and simultaneously constructed by remote group-assisted 1,2-cis-α-stereoselective glycosylations.

Astronauts experience osteoporosis-like loss of bone mass because of microgravity conditions during space flight. To prevent bone loss, they need a riskless and antiresorptive drug. Melatonin is reported to suppress osteoclast function. However, no studies have examined the effects of melatonin on bone metabolism under microgravity conditions. We used goldfish scales as a bone model of coexisting osteoclasts and osteoblasts and demonstrated that mRNA expression level of acetylserotonin O-methyltransferase, an enzyme essential for melatonin synthesis, decreased significantly under microgravity. During space flight, microgravity stimulated osteoclastic activity and significantly increased gene expression for osteoclast differentiation and activation. Melatonin treatment significantly stimulated Calcitonin (an osteoclast-inhibiting hormone) mRNA expression and decreased the mRNA expression of receptor activator of nuclear factor κB ligand (a promoter of osteoclastogenesis), which coincided with suppressed gene expression levels for osteoclast functions. This is the first study to report the inhibitory effect of melatonin on osteoclastic activation by microgravity. We also observed a novel action pathway of melatonin on osteoclasts via an increase in CALCITONIN secretion. Melatonin could be the source of a potential novel drug to prevent bone loss during space flight.

BACKGROUND: Histomorphometric evidence of the effect of pulmonary artery banding (PAB) in infancy on pulmonary vascular reverse remodeling has not been fully described.Methods and Results:We retrospectively reviewed 34 patients who underwent serial lung biopsies before and after PAB.Index of pulmonary vascular disease (IPVD) as a measure of the degree of progression of pulmonary arteriopathy significantly decreased after PAB (1.22±0.25 at 1st and 1.13±0.21 at 2nd biopsy, P=0.04). Additionally,DR=100 µmas an indicator of medial thickness of pulmonary arteries significantly decreased after PAB (15.6±3.7 at 1st and 11.4±2.6 at 2nd biopsy, P<0.0001). Patients were divided into 3 groups by age at PAB: <3 months (Group 1), between 3 and 6 months (Group 2), and >6 months (Group 3). The average secondDR=100 µmof groups 1 and 2 was significantly lower than that of group 3 (11.1±2.2 and 9.8±2.0 vs. 14.9±2.8, respectively; P<0.0001). Additionally, the second IPVD was also significantly lower in groups 1 and 2 than in group 3 (1.1±0.2 and 1.1±0.2 vs. 1.3±0.4, respectively; P=0.02). CONCLUSIONS: Histomorphometric evidence of post-PAB pulmonary vascular reverse remodeling is robust. The magnitude of vascular reversibility is pronounced when PAB is performed before 6 months of age.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is more progressive in trisomy 21 patients. However, pulmonary arteriopathic lesions in these patients have not been fully characterized histopathologically.Methods and Results:A retrospective review of a lung biopsy registry identified 282 patients: 188 patients with trisomy 21 (Group D) and 94 without (Group N). The mean age at lung biopsy was 3 and 7 months (P<0.0001). Pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP) and pulmonary vascular resistance were similar between the 2 groups. There were no significant differences in the proportion of patients with irreversible intimal lesions or the index of pulmonary vascular disease (IPVD; a measure of the degree of pulmonary arteriopathy progression) between the 2 groups. In addition, after propensity score matching for patient background (n=43 in each group), there were no significant differences in IPVD (P=0.29) or the ratio of irreversible intimal changes between the D and N groups (P=0.39). Multivariate analysis identified age (P<0.0001) and PAP (P=0.03) as the only risk factors for progression of pulmonary arteriopathy. CONCLUSIONS: Histopathologically, early progression of pulmonary arteriopathy in patients with trisomy 21 was not proved compared with patients without trisomy 21. Although we cannot exclude the possibility of bias in the Group D and N patients who were slated for lung biopsy, factors other than pulmonary arteriopathy may affect the marked progression of clinical PH in trisomy 21 patients.

We examined the effects of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) on bone metabolism using regenerating goldfish scales. Normally developed scales on the bodies of goldfish were removed to allow the regeneration of scales under anesthesia. Thereafter, the influence of α-MSH on the regeneration of goldfish scales was investigated in vivo. In brief, α-MSH was injected at a low dose (0.1 µg/g body weight) or a high dose (1 µg/g body weight) into goldfish every other day. Ten days after removing the scales, we collected regenerating scales and analyzed osteoblastic and osteoclastic activities as respective marker enzyme (alkaline phosphatase for osteoblasts, tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase for osteoclasts) activity in the regenerating scales as well as plasma calcium levels. At both doses, osteoblastic and osteoclastic activities in the regenerating scales increased significantly. Plasma calcium concentrations in the α-MSH-treated group (high doses) were significantly higher than those in the control group. Next, in vitro experiments were performed to confirm the results of in vivo experiments. In the cultured regenerating scales, osteoblastic and osteoclastic activities significantly increased with α-MSH (10-7 and 10-6 M) treatment. In addition, real-time PCR analysis indicated that osteoclastogenesis in α-MSH-treated scales was induced by the receptor activator of the NF-κB/receptor activator of the NF-κB ligand/osteoprotegerin pathway. Furthermore, we found that α-MSH receptors (melanocortin receptors 4 and 5) were detected in the regenerating scales. Thus, in teleosts, we are the first to demonstrate that α-MSH functions in bone metabolism and promotes bone resorption via melatonin receptors 4 and/or 5.

Streptococcus agalactiae is a major bacterial pathogen in tilapia aquaculture. Vaccines are known to provide protection but S. agalactiae clearance in tilapia can be reduced by marginal environmental conditions. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine S. agalactiae clearance in vaccinated Nile tilapia under moderate hypoxic (55± 5% DO) and normoxic (85 ± 5%DO) conditions. Fish were acclimatized to either moderate hypoxia or normoxia and immunized with formalin-inactivated S. agalactiae. Fish were experimentally challenged with S. agalactiae at 30 days post-vaccination. Serum antibody titer was significantly higher in vaccinated fish kept under normoxic condition compared to the moderate hypoxic condition at fifteen and thirty days post-vaccination. The cumulative mortality following challenge was significantly reduced in vaccinated fish kept under normoxic condition compared to those in moderate hypoxic condition reflecting that pre-challenge antibody titer may correlate with survival of fish. Blood and tissue pathogen burden detection of S. agalactiae studies revealed that culturable S. agalactiae cells could not be detected in the blood of normoxic vaccinated fish at all the sampling points. In contrast, fish vaccinated in moderate hypoxic condition had considerable number of culturable S. agalactiae cells in their blood up to 5 days following challenge. Phagocytosis and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production were lowered by moderate hypoxia in vitro. Furthermore, presence of specific antibodies and higher specific antibody level in the serum increased phagocytosis, ROS production and lowered intracellular survival of S. agalactiae in head kidney leukocytes. Overall this study has highlighted that S. agalactiae clearance in vaccinated Nile tilapia is modulated by moderate hypoxia. One of the possible explanations for this might be less efficient phagocytic activities due to low oxygen availability and lower specific antibody production in vaccinated fish.

The caudal part of the corpus cerebelli of Nile tilapia can be divided into dorsal and ventral regions. The granule cell layer of the dorsal (dGL) and ventral (vGL) regions of the caudal corpus cerebelli is known to receive indirect inputs from the telencephalon relayed by the nucleus paracommissuralis. The descending pathways are topographically organized, and the dGL and vGL receive inputs from different dorsal telencephalic parts. The caudal corpus cerebelli, in turn, projects extracerebellar efferents. However, it remains unknown how the descending telencephalic inputs are processed within the cerebellum. Therefore, the present study investigated intrinsic connections of the caudal corpus cerebelli by injecting neural tracers into the molecular layer of dorsal and ventral regions. Injections of tracers into the ventral molecular layer resulted in labeled cells in the vGL and the ganglionic layer of the ventral corpus. The axonal trajectories from labeled cells in the ganglionic layer were analyzed in detail via single-axon reconstructions, which suggested that the terminal portions were confined to the ganglionic layer of the dorsal corpus. No labeled terminals were observed outside the caudal corpus cerebelli. Tracer applications to the dorsal molecular layer resulted in labeled cells not only in the ganglionic layer and the granule cell layer of the dorsal corpus but also in the ganglionic layer of the ventral corpus. The latter finding confirms the presence of intrinsic projections from the ventral region to the dorsal region in the caudal corpus cerebelli. We further revealed that the intrinsic projection neurons are Purkinje cells by immunohistochemistry for zebrin II (aldolase C), which is a marker of Purkinje cells, combined with tracer injections into the dorsal corpus. Unlike injections into the ventral corpus, injections into the dorsal corpus resulted in labeled terminals in extracerebellar structures, such as the nucleus of the medial longitudinal fascicle and reticular formation. The present study suggests that indirect inputs from different telencephalic parts received and processed by distinct regions of caudal corpus cerebelli are sent out of the corpus through the efferent neurons in the dorsal corpus.

Calcitonin (CT) is a hormone that decreases serum calcium level by suppressing osteoclastic activity in the vertebrate bone. In vertebrates, the structure-function relationship of CTs has been studied extensively. We recently identified three CT superfamily peptides, Bf-CTFP1 to 3, and clarified the molecular and functional characteristics of their receptor and receptor activity-modifying protein in amphioxus, Branchiostoma floridae. However, the CT activity of Bf-CTFPs has yet to be investigated. In the present study, a functional analysis of Bf-CTFPs was performed using goldfish scales having both osteoclasts and osteoblasts. All Bf-CTFPs suppressed osteoclastic activity via a goldfish CT receptor. Although the primary amino acid sequences of the Bf-CTFPs showed low sequence similarity to vertebrate CTs, Bf-CTFP1 to 3 share three amino acids, Thr25, Thr27, and Pro32-NH2, that are required for receptor binding, with salmon CT. Moreover, homology model analysis revealed that the Bf-CTFPs form alpha-helical structures. The alpha-helical position and length of Bf-CTFP1 and 2 were conserved with those of a highly potent ligand, teleost CT. Interestingly, the composition of the alpha-helix of Bf-CTFP3 differed from those of teleost CT, despite that the action of Bf-CTFP3 on goldfish scales was the same as that of Bf-CTFP1 and 2. Collectively, the present study provides new insights into the structure-function relationship of CT and its functional evolution in chordates.

The nucleotide sequence of a sardine preprocalcitonin precursor has been determined from their ultimobranchial glands in the present study. From our analysis of this sequence, we found that sardine procalcitonin was composed of procalcitonin amino-terminal cleavage peptide (N-proCT) (53 amino acids), CT (32 amino acids), and procalcitonin carboxyl-terminal cleavage peptide (C-proCT) (18 amino acids). As compared with C-proCT, N-proCT has been highly conserved among teleosts, reptiles, and birds, which suggests that N-proCT has some bioactivities. Therefore, both sardine N-proCT and sardine CT were synthesized, and their bioactivities for osteoblasts and osteoclasts were examined using our assay system with goldfish scales that consisted of osteoblasts and osteoclasts. As a result, sardine N-proCT (10-7M) activated osteoblastic marker enzyme activity, while sardine CT did not change. On the other hand, sardine CT (10-9 to 10-7M) suppressed osteoclastic marker enzyme activity, although sardine N-proCT did not influence enzyme activity. Furthermore, the mRNA expressions of osteoblastic markers such as type 1 collagen and osteocalcin were also promoted by sardine N-proCT (10-7M) treatment; however, sardine CT did not influence their expressions. The osteoblastic effects of N-proCT lack agreement. In the present study, we can evaluate exactly the action for osteoblasts because our scale assay system is very sensitive and it is a co-culture system for osteoblasts and osteoclasts with calcified bone matrix. Both CT and N-proCT seem to influence osteoblasts and osteoclasts and promote bone formation by different actions in teleosts.

Hypoxia is known as a potential immunomodulator in fish. This study therefore assesses the impact of chronic, moderate hypoxia on vaccine efficacy in Oreochromis niloticus. Serum antibody titer was used as a surrogate marker to detect vaccine efficacy. The fish were acclimatized to either moderate hypoxia (55 ± 5% DO) or normoxia (85 ± 5%DO) and immunized with formalin inactivated Vibrio anguillarum. Significantly, a higher antibody titer was found in normoxic fish than in moderate hypoxia. The normoxic group titer peaked at 14th dpv (days post vaccination) while the moderate hypoxic group peaked at 21st or 28th dpv. The absolute blood lymphocyte counts and serum bactericidal activities against V. anguillarum were significantly higher in normoxic fish. Serum killing of V. anguillarum appeared to be mainly via antibody-dependent classical complement pathway. Furthermore, the first week following vaccination appears critical for antibody production. This view was further supported by results obtained from gene expression assay, where the transcription level of all the detected immune related genes (IgM, IL-1 ß, TCR-ß, MHC-II ß), except B cell activating factor, were significantly suppressed following exposure to moderate hypoxia. The overall results highlight that even though moderate hypoxia is not easily detectable in Oreochromis niloticus, it negatively affects antibody production by suppressing and delaying antibody response, ultimately affecting vaccine efficacy.

We have developed an original in vitro bioassay using teleost scale, that has osteoclasts, osteoblasts, and bone matrix as each marker: alkaline phosphatase (ALP) for osteoblasts and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) for osteoclasts. Using this scale in vitro bioassay, we examined the effects of seawater polluted with highly concentrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nitro-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs) on osteoblastic and osteoclastic activities in the present study. Polluted seawater was collected from two sites (the Alexandria site on the Mediterranean Sea and the Suez Canal site on the Red Sea). Total levels of PAHs in the seawater from the Alexandria and Suez Canal sites were 1364.59 and 992.56 ng/l, respectively. We were able to detect NPAHs in both seawater samples. Total levels of NPAHs were detected in the seawater of the Alexandria site (12.749 ng/l) and the Suez Canal site (3.914 ng/l). Each sample of polluted seawater was added to culture medium at dilution rates of 50, 100, and 500, and incubated with the goldfish scales for 6 hrs. Thereafter, ALP and TRAP activities were measured. ALP activity was significantly suppressed by both polluted seawater samples diluted at least 500 times, but TRAP activity did not change. In addition, mRNA expressions of osteoblastic markers (ALP, osteocalcin, and the receptor activator of the NF-κB ligand) decreased significantly, as did the ALP enzyme activity. In fact, ALP activity decreased on treatment with PAHs and NPAHs. We conclude that seawater polluted with highly concentrated PAHs and NPAHs influences bone metabolism in teleosts.

Using fish scales in which osteoclasts and osteoblasts coexist on the calcified bone matrix, we examined the effects of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) on both osteoclasts and osteoblasts. At 3h of incubation after LIPUS treatment, osteoclastic markers such as tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) and cathepsin K mRNA expressions decreased significantly while mRNA expressions of osteoblastic markers, osteocalcin, distal-less homeobox 5, runt-related transcription factor 2a, and runt-related transcription factor 2b, increased significantly. At 6 and 18h of incubation, however, both osteoclastic and osteoblastic marker mRNA expression did not change at least present conditions. Using GeneChip analysis of zebrafish scales treated with LIPUS, we found that cell death-related genes were upregulated with LIPUS treatment. Real-time PCR analysis indicated that the expression of apoptosis-related genes also increased significantly. To confirm the involvement of apoptosis in osteoclasts with LIPUS, osteoclasts were induced by autotransplanting scales in goldfish. Thereafter, the DNA fragmentation associated with apoptosis was detected in osteoclasts using the TUNEL (TdT-mediated dUTP nick end labeling) method. The multi-nuclei of TRAP-stained osteoclasts in the scales were labeled with TUNEL. TUNEL staining showed that the number of apoptotic osteoclasts in goldfish scales was significantly elevated by treatment with LIPUS at 3h of incubation. Thus, we are the first to demonstrate that LIPUS directly functions to osteoclasts and to conclude that LIPUS directly causes apoptosis in osteoclasts shortly after exposure.

A 66-year-old man complaining of epigastralgia was referred to our hospital. We examined the patient and diagnosed advanced gastric cancer (ML, type 3, por, cT3, cN3, cH0, cP0, cM1[LYM], cStage IV). A poor outcome was predicted, so we attempted induction chemotherapy and expected tumor downstaging. We chose S-1/CDDP therapy. S-1 was administered orally for 21 days, followed by CDDP div on day 8. Total gastrectomy and lymph node dissection (D2+No. 12a, No. 13,16) was performed using Roux-en-Y reconstruction. Histological examination of the resected stomach and lymph nodes revealed no residual cancer cells, suggesting complete histological remission (grade 3) according to the Japanese classification of gastric carcinoma. The patient has been in good health without recurrence for 12 months after surgery.

In addition to an oral jaw, cichlids have a pharyngeal jaw, which is used for crushing and processing captured prey. The teeth and morphology of the pharyngeal jaw bones adapt to changes in prey in response to changes in the growing environment. This study aimed to explore the possible involvement of the peripheral nervous system in remodeling the cichlid pharyngeal jaw by examining the innervation of the inferior pharyngeal jaw in the Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. Vagal innervation was identified in the Nile tilapia inferior pharyngeal jaw. Double staining with tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase and immunostaining with the neuronal markers, protein gene product 9.5, and acetylated tubulin, revealed that osteoclasts, which play an important role in remodeling, were distributed in the vicinity of the nerves and were in apposition with the nerve terminals. This contact between peripheral nerves and osteoclasts suggests that the peripheral nervous system may play a role in remodeling the inferior pharyngeal jaw in cichlids.
