RESUMO

Donor-acceptor Stenhouse adducts (DASAs), derived from bio-based furfural, demonstrate reversible isomerization when exposed to light and heat, positioning them as attractive candidates for sustainable smart materials. However, achieving efficient and rapid isomerization in high bio-content solid-state matrices, especially under mild conditions, remains a significant hurdle due to restricted molecular mobility and limited matrix options. To address this, we developed a novel solid matrix in the form of sustainable nano/micro capsules, which boast the highest bio-content reported to date (57%). Composed of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and a lauric-stearic acid eutectic mixture (L-SEM), these capsules facilitate highly efficient and rapid reversible isomerization of a third-generation DASA (DASA-1). Remarkably, the system achieves 84% forward and 90% reverse isomerization under mild temperatures, significantly enhancing the material's photo-switching capabilities. This advancement not only addresses the critical challenge of isomerization within high bio-content solid matrices but also opens broader possibilities for the application of bio-based DASAs in environmentally friendly technologies, such as color-rich rewritable papers. By innovating in the design of sustainable smart materials, this work has the potential to extend the utility of DASAs across various scientific fields, contributing to the global shift towards a low-carbon, environmentally sustainable society.

RESUMO

Although many strategies have been reported for modified poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fiber surfaces, the absence of approaches with the potential of applications in industries limits the further applications of the fibers in a wide field. Herein, PBO fibers are modified by heat treatment combined with corona discharge treatment, which is a continuous industrialized method. Then, the surface morphology, wettability, orientation, and crystallinity of the PBO fibers are characterized in detail. Systematic experiments demonstrate that the high thermal treatment can improve the orientation and crystallization degree of the fibers, as well as the degradation resistance. In addition, owing to the synergistic mechanism of ozone and high-frequency shock, the corona discharge treatment increases the contents of O and N elements on the surfaces, which improves the superficial properties of the fibers. Based on the modification of PBO fibers, the inter-laminar shear strength between the fiber and the resin for the composite increases to 94.8%, and the tensile strength of the composite increases to 29.2%, compared to those using untreated fibers. In general, the proposed modification strategy not only easily improves the surface properties and the mechanical properties of composites but also can be used with great potential in industrial production.

RESUMO

Light-degradable hydrogels have a wide range of application prospects in the field of biomedicine. However, the provision of a facile synthetic approach to light-degradable hydrogels under mild conditions remains a challenge for researchers. To surmount this challenge, a facile synthetic approach to UV-degradable hydrogels is demonstrated in this manuscript. Initially, an UV-degradable crosslinker (UVDC) having o-nitrobenzyl ester groups was synthesized in a single step through the employment of the Passerini three-component reaction (P-3CR). Both 1H NMR and MS spectra indicated the successful synthesis of high-purity UVDC, and it was experimentally demonstrated that the synthesized UVDC was capable of degradation under 368 nm light. Furthermore, this UVDC was mixed with 8-arm PEG-thiol (sPEG20k-(SH)8) to promptly yield an UV-degradable hydrogel through a click reaction. The SEM image of the fabricated hydrogel exhibits the favorable crosslinking network of the hydrogel, proving the successful synthesis of the hydrogel. After continuous 368 nm irradiation, the hydrogel showed an obvious gel-sol transition, which demonstrates that the hydrogel possesses a desirable UV-degradable property. In summary, by utilizing solely a two-step reaction devoid of catalysts and hazardous raw materials, UV-degradable hydrogels can be obtained under ambient conditions, which greatly reduces the difficulty of synthesizing light-degradable hydrogels. This work extends the synthetic toolbox for light-degradable hydrogels, enabling their accelerated development.

RESUMO

The development of wearable artificial livers was restricted to device miniaturization and bleeding risk with water-soluble anticoagulants. Herein, a double-deck column filled with solid anticoagulant microspheres and Kevlar porous microspheres (KPMs, bilirubin adsorbents) was connected with the principle machine of wearable artificial liver (approximately 9 kg) to treat hyperbilirubinemia beagles for the first time. With the initial normal dose of heparin, the double-deck column could afford 3 h hemoperfusion in whole blood without thrombus formation. The removal efficiency of the double-deck column for total bilirubin (TBIL) was 31.4%. Interestingly, the excessive amounts of hepatocyte metabolites were also decreased by approximately 25%. The "anticoagulant + column" realized safe and effective whole blood hemoperfusion without the plasma separation system and heparin pump; however, the proposed principle machine of wearable artificial liver and "anticoagulant + column" cannot completely replace the bio-liver now. The intelligence of the device and the versatility of the adsorbent need to be improved; moreover, advanced experimental techniques need to be developed to validate the survival rates in animals. Overall, this study is a meaningful trial for the development of wearable artificial livers in the future.
