AIMS: To explore whether music can reduce anxiety and pain in patients who underwent diagnostic endoscopic examinations in conscious and deep sedation and to assess degree of satisfaction and willingness to repeat the procedure. DESIGN: Prospective study led by nursing. METHODS: Between March 2019-June 2019, consecutive outpatients undergoing endoscopic examinations were simple matched into four groups: Group 1: conscious sedation with music; Group 2: conscious sedation without music; Group 3: deep sedation with music and Group 4: deep sedation without music. Ten minutes before the procedure, two trainee nurses applied music. State-Trait Anxiety Inventory was used to evaluate anxiety. RESULTS: Before and at the end of the procedure, patients who listened to music had a lower level anxiety than those who did not listen and, also, reported lower pain intensity during procedure. Only within Group 1 median anxiety, measured after the procedure, is lower than that measured before. In the bivariate logistic regression model, pain and listening to music were independent factors for satisfaction and willingness to repeat procedure. CONCLUSION: music in digestive endoscopy reduce pain and anxiety in conscious sedation, thus could be used to reduce anxiety in support to conscious sedation leading to lower usage of deep sedation and consequently reduction of costs and adverse events. IMPACT: Anxiety in digestive endoscopy limits patients' satisfaction. Music in digestive endoscopy as a specific nursing intervention could reduce anxiety of patients. This nursing intervention study confirms positive effect of music in digestive endoscopy. As part of nursing management, the addition of music to daily care practice in digestive endoscopy may reduce anxiety and increase the patient's degree of satisfaction. Use of music could limit deep sedation use in digestive endoscopy with consequent reduction of risks for patients, execution times, and costs of procedures.

OBJECTIVES: To examine associations between mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and falls among primary care patients, and to investigate whether social engagement (SE) modifies these associations. DESIGN: Cross sectional analysis using baseline data from an observational cohort study. SETTING: Primary care. PARTICIPANTS: Community-dwelling older adults (N=430) at risk of mobility decline with a mean age of 76.6 years (range 65-96y). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The number of falls in the past year was reported at the baseline interview. MCI was identified using a cutoff of 1.5 SD below the age-adjusted mean on at least 2 of the standardized cognitive performance tests. SE (eg, keeping in touch with friends and family, volunteering, participating social activities…) was assessed with the Late Life Function and Disability Instrument, and required a score above the median value 49.5 out of 100. RESULTS: MCI was present among 42% of participants and 42% reported at least 1 fall in the preceding year. Using generalized estimating equations, MCI was associated with a 77% greater rate of falls (P<.05). There was a statistically significant interaction between SE and MCI on the rate of falls (P<.01), such that at a high level of SE, MCI was not statistically associated with falls (P=.83). In participants with lower levels of SE, MCI is associated with 1.3 times greater rate of falls (P<.01). CONCLUSIONS: While MCI is associated with a greater risk for falls, higher levels of SE may play a protective role.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the relationship between close proximity to detonated blast munitions and cognitive functioning in OEF/OIF/OND Veterans. METHODS: A total of 333 participants completed a comprehensive evaluation that included assessment of neuropsychological functions, psychiatric diagnoses and history of military and non-military brain injury. Participants were assigned to a Close-Range Blast Exposure (CBE) or Non-Close-Range Blast Exposure (nonCBE) group based on whether they had reported being exposed to at least one blast within 10 meters. RESULTS: Groups were compared on principal component scores representing the domains of memory, verbal fluency, and complex attention (empirically derived from a battery of standardized cognitive tests), after adjusting for age, education, PTSD diagnosis, sleep quality, substance abuse disorder, and pain. The CBE group showed poorer performance on the memory component. Rates of clinical impairment were significantly higher in the CBE group on select CVLT-II indices. Exploratory analyses examined the effects of concussion and multiple blasts on test performance and revealed that number of lifetime concussions did not contribute to memory performance. However, accumulating blast exposures at distances greater than 10 meters did contribute to poorer performance. CONCLUSIONS: Close proximity to detonated blast munitions may impact memory, and Veterans exposed to close-range blast are more likely to demonstrate clinically meaningful deficits. These findings were observed after statistically adjusting for comorbid factors. Results suggest that proximity to blast should be considered when assessing for memory deficits in returning Veterans. Comorbid psychiatric factors may not entirely account for cognitive difficulties. (JINS, 2018, 24, 466-475).

Verotoxigenic Escherichia coli infections in humans cause disease ranging from uncomplicated intestinal illnesses to bloody diarrhea and systemic sequelae, such as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Previous research indicated that pigeons may be a reservoir for a population of verotoxigenic E. coli producing the VT2f variant. We used whole-genome sequencing to characterize a set of VT2f-producing E. coli strains from human patients with diarrhea or HUS and from healthy pigeons. We describe a phage conveying the vtx2f genes and provide evidence that the strains causing milder diarrheal disease may be transmitted to humans from pigeons. The strains causing HUS could derive from VT2f phage acquisition by E. coli strains with a virulence genes asset resembling that of typical HUS-associated verotoxigenic E. coli.

The syntheses, structures, and luminescence properties of a series of copper(I) halide coordination polymers, prepared with mono- and bidentate N-heteroaromatic ligands, are reported. These metal-organic coordination networks form [Cu2I2L]n for bidentate ligands (where L = pyrazine (1), quinazoline (2)) and [CuIL]n for monodentate ligands (where L = 3-benzoylpyridine (3) and 4-benzoylpyridine(4)). Both sets of compounds exhibit a double-stranded stair-Cu2I2-polymer, or "ladder" structure with the ligand coordinating to the metal in a bidentate (bridging two stairs) or monodentate mode. The copper bromide analogues for the bidentate ligands were also targeted, [Cu2Br2L]n for L = pyrazine (5) with the same stair structure, as well as compositions of [CuBr(L)]n for L = pyrazine (6) and quinazoline (7), which have a different structure type, where the -Cu-Br- forms a single-stranded "zigzag" chain. These copper halide polymers were found to be luminescent at room temperature, with emission peaks ranging from ∼550 to 680 nm with small shifts at low temperature. The structure (stair or chain), the halide (I or Br), as well as the ligand play an important role in determining the position and intensity of emission. Lifetime measurements at room and low temperatures confirm the presence of thermally activated delayed fluorescence, or singlet harvesting for compounds 1, 2, and 7. We also investigated the nonlinear optical properties and found that, of this series, [CuBr(quinazoline)]n shows a very strong second harmonic generating response that is ∼150 times greater than that of α-SiO2.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the temporal consistency of self-reported deployment-related traumatic brain injury (TBI) and its association with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom severity. SETTING: In-person interviews at US Army installations (postdeployment); phone interviews (long-term follow-up). PARTICIPANTS: A total of 378 US Army soldiers and veterans deployed to Iraq; 14.3% (n = 54) reported TBI with loss of consciousness during an index deployment. DESIGN: Participants were evaluated after returning from deployment and again 5 to 9 years later. MAIN MEASURES: Temporal consistency of TBI endorsement based on TBI screening interviews; PTSD Checklist, Civilian Version. RESULTS: The concordance of deployment-related TBI endorsement from the postdeployment to long-term follow-up assessment was moderate (κ = 0.53). Of the 54 participants reporting (predominantly mild) TBI occurring during an index deployment, 32 endorsed TBI inconsistently over time. More severe PTSD symptoms at postdeployment assessment were independently associated with discordant reporting (P = .0004); each 10-point increase in PCL scores increasing odds of discordance by 69% (odds ratio = 1.69; 95% confidence interval, 1.26-2.26). CONCLUSIONS: Deployment-related TBI may not be reported reliably over time, particularly among war-zone veterans with greater PTSD symptoms. Results of screening evaluations for TBI history should be viewed with caution in the context of PTSD symptom history.

OBJECTIVES: We determined the impact of obtaining housing on geriatric conditions and acute care utilization among older homeless adults. METHODS: We conducted a 12-month prospective cohort study of 250 older homeless adults recruited from shelters in Boston, Massachusetts, between January and June 2010. We determined housing status at follow-up, determined number of emergency department visits and hospitalizations over 12 months, and examined 4 measures of geriatric conditions at baseline and 12 months. Using multivariable regression models, we evaluated the association between obtaining housing and our outcomes of interest. RESULTS: At 12-month follow-up, 41% of participants had obtained housing. Compared with participants who remained homeless, those with housing had fewer depressive symptoms. Other measures of health status did not differ by housing status. Participants who obtained housing had a lower rate of acute care use, with an adjusted annualized rate of acute care visits of 2.5 per year among participants who obtained housing and 5.3 per year among participants who remained homeless. CONCLUSIONS: Older homeless adults who obtained housing experienced improved depressive symptoms and reduced acute care utilization compared with those who remained homeless.

BACKGROUND: Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a chronic sight-threatening ocular disease. Topical cyclosporine A (Cyc) has been widely administered as a steroid-sparing drug, although in about 7-10% of cases, it has been ineffective. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of 0.1% topical tacrolimus (Tcr) in patients with severe VKC who failed to respond to 1% Cyc eyedrops. METHODS: Consecutive patients with severe, Cyc-resistant VKC were enrolled in a double-blind, comparative, crossover (DBCO) trial; all patients were treated with 1% Cyc in one eye and 0.1% Tcr in the other eye for 3 wk. After a washout period of 7 days, patients were instructed to cross over the medications for three additional weeks. Objective ocular score, subjective score, and quality-of-life questionnaires (QoLQ) were collected during the trial. Blood samples were drawn to assess several safety parameters. RESULTS: Thirty patients have been enrolled (mean age 9.05 ± 2.12 yr). In each of the two phases of the DBCO trial, a significant improvement in objective and subjective scores was observed in the eyes treated with 0.1% Tcr (p < 0.001). Likewise, the quality of life significantly improved despite only half the eyes being successfully treated. Serum creatinine and blood parameters were constantly within the normal range, and both blood Cyc and Tcr concentrations remained below the lowest detectable levels. CONCLUSIONS: Topical Tcr is very effective and safe in the short term for patients suffering from severe VKC resistant to topical Cyc.

Certain verocytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) O157 phage types (PTs), such as PT8 and PT2, are associated with severe human infections, while others, such as PT21, seem to be restricted to cattle. In an attempt to delve into the mechanisms underlying such a differential distribution of PTs, we performed microarray comparison of human PT8 and animal PT21 VTEC O157 isolates. The main differences observed were in the vtx2-converting phages, with the PT21 strains bearing a phage identical to that present in the reference strain EDL933, BP933W, and all the PT8 isolates displaying lack of hybridization in some regions of the phage genome. We focused on the region spanning the gam and cII genes and developed a PCR tool to investigate the presence of PT8-like phages in a panel of VTEC O157 strains belonging to different PTs and determined that a vtx2 phage reacting with the primers deployed, which we named Φ8, was more frequent in VTEC O157 strains from human disease than in bovine strains. No differences were observed in the production of the VT2 mRNA when Φ8-positive strains were compared with VTEC O157 possessing BP933W. Nevertheless, we show that the gam-cII region of phage Φ8 might carry genetic determinants downregulating the transcription of the genes encoding the components of the type III secretion system borne on the locus of enterocyte effacement pathogenicity island.

BACKGROUND: Enteroaggregative Haemorrhagic E. coli (EAHEC) is a new pathogenic group of E. coli characterized by the presence of a vtx2-phage integrated in the genomic backbone of Enteroaggregative E. coli (EAggEC). So far, four distinct EAHEC serotypes have been described that caused, beside the large outbreak of infection occurred in Germany in 2011, a small outbreak and six sporadic cases of HUS in the time span 1992-2012. In the present work we determined the whole genome sequence of the vtx2-phage, termed Phi-191, present in the first described EAHEC O111:H2 isolated in France in 1992 and compared it with those of the vtx-phages whose sequences were available. RESULTS: The whole genome sequence of the Phi-191 phage was identical to that of the vtx2-phage P13374 present in the EAHEC O104:H4 strain isolated during the German outbreak 20 years later. Moreover, it was also almost identical to those of the other vtx2-phages of EAHEC O104:H4 strains described so far. Conversely, the Phi-191 phage appeared to be different from the vtx2-phage carried by the EAHEC O111:H21 isolated in the Northern Ireland in 2012.The comparison of the vtx2-phages sequences from EAHEC strains with those from the vtx-phages of typical Verocytotoxin-producing E. coli strains showed the presence of a 900 bp sequence uniquely associated with EAHEC phages and encoding a tail fiber. CONCLUSIONS: At least two different vtx2-phages, both characterized by the presence of a peculiar tail fiber-coding gene, intervened in the emergence of EAHEC. The finding of an identical vtx2-phage in two EAggEC strains isolated after 20 years in spite of the high variability described for vtx-phages is unexpected and suggests that such vtx2-phages are kept under a strong selective pressure.The observation that different EAHEC infections have been traced back to countries where EAggEC infections are endemic and the treatment of human sewage is often ineffective suggests that such countries may represent the cradle for the emergence of the EAHEC pathotype. In these regions, EAggEC of human origin can extensively contaminate the environment where they can meet free vtx-phages likely spread by ruminants excreta.

Verocytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) are food borne pathogens causing severe human infections. The virulence genes asset of VTEC is complex and has not been completely defined yet. Nonetheless, all the virulence genes described so far have been described as conveyed by mobile genetic elements. A gene, termed toxB, has been identified in a large virulence plasmid of VTEC O157, later described in similar plasmids carried by VTEC O26 and O145. In this study we identified for the first time an intact copy of toxB gene in a plasmid present in a VTEC O111 strain and observed the existence of two allelic variants of the gene, that we termed toxB1 and toxB2. We investigated the distribution of the two alleles in a panel of VTEC strains belonging to different serogroups and demonstrated that this gene is present only in VTEC serogroups associated with the most severe forms of the infections such as those belonging to the five serogroups O157, O26, O111, O103 and O145 and that the two alleles segregate with the serogroup of the hosting strains. In particular the toxB1 variant was only present in VTEC O157 while the toxB2 allele was present in the remaining four VTEC serogroups.

OBJECTIVE: Report the prevalence of lifetime and military-related traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) veterans and validate the Boston Assessment of TBI-Lifetime (BAT-L). SETTING: The BAT-L is the first validated, postcombat, semistructured clinical interview to characterize head injuries and diagnose TBIs throughout the life span. PARTICIPANTS: Community-dwelling convenience sample of 131 OEF/OIF veterans. DESIGN: TBI criteria (alteration of mental status, posttraumatic amnesia, and loss of consciousness) were evaluated for all possible TBIs, including a novel evaluation of blast exposure. MAIN MEASURES: BAT-L, Ohio State University TBI Identification Method (OSU-TBI-ID). RESULTS: About 67% of veterans incurred a TBI in their lifetime. Almost 35% of veterans experienced at least 1 military-related TBI; all were mild in severity, 40% of them were due to blast, 50% were due to some other (ie, blunt) mechanism, and 10% were due to both types of injuries. Predeployment TBIs were frequent (45% of veterans). There was strong correspondence between the BAT-L and the OSU-TBI-ID (Cohen κ = 0.89; Kendall τ-b = 0.95). Interrater reliability of the BAT-L was strong (κs >0.80). CONCLUSIONS: The BAT-L is a valid instrument with which to assess TBI across a service member's lifetime and captures the varied and complex nature of brain injuries across OEF/OIF veterans' life span.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to demonstrate the efficacy of cyclosporine A 0.1% cationic emulsion (CsA CE) eye drops 4 times a day in pediatric patients affected by a moderate form of vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC). METHODS: This was a prospective study of pediatric patients, aged 5-16 years, with an active moderate form of VKC who were poor responders to topical antihistamines treatment and were treated 4 times a day with CsA CE. The clinical signs were graded for analysis as follows: hyperemia, tarsal papillae, and limbal papillae. RESULTS: Twenty-eight patients (22 males and 6 females) with a minimum follow-up period of 3 months were included in the analysis. Statistical analysis excluded tarsal papillae because of the very low baseline value. The clinical score of hyperemia and limbal papillae improved from the first evaluation and was maintained over the follow-up. No side effects were noted. CONCLUSION: CsA CE has been proposed as a treatment for severe forms of VKC. This study has shown that administration 4 times a day is also effective in the treatment of moderate forms of VKC in children.

RESUMO

Improved understanding of the pattern of white matter changes in early and prodromal Alzheimer's disease (AD) states such as mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is necessary to support earlier preclinical detection of AD, and debate remains whether white matter changes in MCI are secondary to gray matter changes. We applied neuropsychologically based MCI criteria to a sample of normally aging older adults; 32 participants met criteria for MCI and 81 participants were classified as normal control (NC) subjects. Whole-head high resolution T1 and diffusion tensor imaging scans were completed. Tract-Based Spatial Statistics was applied and a priori selected regions of interest were extracted. Hippocampal volume and cortical thickness averaged across regions with known vulnerability to AD were derived. Controlling for corticalthic kness, the MCI group showed decreased average fractional anisotropy (FA) and decreased FA in parietal white matter and in white matter underlying the entorhinal and posterior cingulate cortices relative to the NC group. Statistically controlling for cortical thickness, medial temporal FA was related to memory and parietal FA was related to executive functioning. These results provide further support for the potential role of white matter integrity as an early biomarker for individuals at risk for AD and highlight that changes in white matter may be independent of gray matter changes.

Background: To explore the agreement between clinical judgment and Guided Progression Analysis II (GPAII) in the evaluation of visual fields (VF) progression in patients with glaucoma. Methods: Three glaucoma experts and three general ophthalmologists were asked to rate the VF series by classifying them as progressive through the observation of the overview report. The agreement between clinical judgment and GPAII event analysis (EA) and trend analysis (TA) was assessed by Cohen statistic. The sensitivity and specificity of clinical judgment in detecting the presence of progression was evaluated considering the results of GPAII as the reference standard. Results: 66 VF series were included in the study. Glaucoma experts, general ophthalmologists, GPAII EA, and GPAII TA found progression in 39%, 38%, 15%, and 21% of the VF series (p < 0.05). The clinical judgment of glaucoma experts and general ophthalmologists was discordant with GPAII EA in 27.2% and 28.7% (k = 0.35, 95% CI 0.15−0.56 and k = 0.30, 95% CI 0.09−0.52) and with GPAII TA in 21.2% and 25.7% of the VF series examined (k = 0.51, 95% CI 0.31−0.72 and k = 0.41, 95% CI 0.18−0.62). Considering the GPAII EA and TA as reference standard, glaucoma experts showed a sensitivity of 90% and 92.8% and a specificity of 69.6% and 75%, while general ophthalmologists showed a sensitivity of 80% and 78.5% and a specificity of 69.6% and 73%. Conclusions: The agreement between clinical judgment and GPAII ranges from fair to moderate. Glaucoma experts showed better ability than general ophthalmologists in detecting VF progression.

BACKGROUND: The SARS-CoV-2 outbreak pushed the Italian government to start a strict lockdown, replacing school attendance with long-distance learning. This caused reduced exposure to sunlight but increased exposure to screens. Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a chronic inflammatory ocular condition in which exposure to light plays a cardinal role. We conducted an online survey to evaluate the impact of screen exposure on children with VKC during the COVID-19 lockdown. METHODS: We performed a survey-based observational study, asking patients followed at the Allergology clinics of Meyer Children's University Hospital in Florence and of Policlinico Umberto I in Rome to provide grading on 6 subjective ocular clinical manifestations presented during the lockdown and to give an estimate of their hours/day of screen exposure. RESULTS: Mean scores of signs and symptoms increased homogeneously when studying patients exposed to longer screen time. When comparing scores collected in 2019 to those in 2020, there was not a significant reduction in clinical manifestations, although the situation differed between the two centers due to geographical differences in sunlight exposure. CONCLUSION: During the lockdown, there was a reduction in sunlight exposure but conversely an increase in the time spent in front of screens that correlated with the worsening of VKC signs and symptoms in direct proportion to the hours/day of screen exposure. Our results also showed a statistically significant difference in the relative impact of long-distance learning on VKC clinical manifestations in the different Italian regions.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance on the Clock-in-the-Box (CIB), a screening measure for cognitive function, relative to neuropsychological testing in an older population with cardiovascular risk. METHODS: A prospective cohort of older patients (>50 years) with cardiovascular risk was recruited to perform the CIB and complete a brief neuropsychological battery consisting of Trailmaking tests, the Hopkins Verbal Learning Test (HVLT), and fluency tasks. Performance on the CIB was scored according to standard criteria (range 0-8, 0-worst). The performance on the total CIB, working memory subscale (CIB-WM), and planning/organization (COB-PO) was compared to neuropsychological measures. RESULTS: The cohort (n = 127) was older (age 67 ± 7 years) and diverse with 33% female (n = 42) and 42% non-white race (n = 53). Cardiac risk factors were prevalent: hypertension (83%), hyperlipidemia (74%), overweight (84%), diabetes (48%), prior cardiac disease (39%), and smoking (11%). The CIB (mean 6.5 ± 1.3) took 84 ± 21 s on average to complete and had good inter-rater reliability (κ = 0.809, p < 0.01). The CIB-WM subscale was significantly correlated with performance on Trailmaking B and HVLT learning, recall, and recognition. The CIB-PO subscale was significantly associated with semantic and phonemic fluency, Trailmaking B, and HVLT learning and recall. In regression modeling, CIB-WM significantly predicted performance on HVLT learning, recall, and retention. CIB-PO subscale predicted performance on Trailmaking B, HVLT learning, and HVLT recall. CONCLUSIONS: The CIB is a brief cognitive screening instrument with good reliability and predictive validity in a CV risk population. The CIB-WM and CIB-PO subscales could provide utility for clinicians.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of vascular risk factors that can impact cognition. Cognitive reserve (CR), specifically early operators of reserve (e.g., education), have not been explored in the relationship between MetS and cognition. Adults 45-90 years old (n = 149) underwent neuropsychological testing and evaluation for MetS. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses defined neuropsychological domains and created a CR score based on early operators of CR. Regression analyses examined the association among MetS, CR, and neuropsychological performance. CFA revealed two neuropsychological factors: Episodic Memory and Executive Functioning. Controlling for age and physical ability, MetS and CR were significant predictors of the Factors. With CR in the model, MetS became a non-significant predictor of Executive Functioning; CR and physical ability were the most significant predictors. CR and MetS significantly predicted Episodic Memory . The results are discussed in the context of neuroprotective factors and cognitive aging.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of tacrolimus 0.1% eye drops in a large population of pediatric patients affected by a severe form of vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) who responded poorly to cyclosporine eye drops. METHODS: This is a retrospective study based on standardized clinical charts and data collection of consecutive patients affected by severe VKC who responded poorly to cyclosporine eye drops topical treatment but treated with tacrolimus 0.1% eye drops with a follow-up of 18 months. Four clinical signs were graded for analysis: hyperemia, tarsal papillae, giant papillae, and limbal papillae. The blood tests for kidney and liver function and the tacrolimus level were studied. Visits were scheduled at baseline and at 3, 6, 12, and 18 months. Patients received tacrolimus 0.1% eye drops in both eyes 2 times daily. RESULTS: Four hundred thirty-one patients were included. Three hundred twenty-five patients were affected by a seasonal form, whereas the remaining 106 by a perennial form. Statistical analysis on each single score showed a positive relevance (P < 0.001) from baseline to all other visits. No local or systemic complications were recorded. CONCLUSIONS: Tacrolimus has been proposed as a treatment for severe forms of VKC. This study has confirmed the safety and efficacy of tacrolimus 0.1% eye drops in a large pediatric population of patients affected by a severe form of VKC who responded poorly to cyclosporine eye drops.

The temperature dependence of the crystalline phase of (nitrosyl)(tetraphenylporphinato)cobalt(II), [Co(TPP)(NO)], has been explored over the temperature range of 100-250 K by X-ray diffraction experiments. The crystalline complex is found in the tetragonal crystal system at higher temperatures and in the triclinic crystal system at lower temperatures. In the tetragonal system, the axial ligand is strongly disordered, with the molecule having crystallographically required 4/m symmetry, leading to eight distinct positions of the single nitrosyl oxygen atom. The phase transition to the triclinic crystal system leads to a partial ordering with the molecule now having inversion symmetry and disorder of the axial nitrosyl ligand over only two positions. At an intermediate temperature near the transition point, a transition structure in which the ordering observed at lower temperatures is only partially complete has been characterized. The increase in ordering allows subtle molecular geometry features to be observed. The transition of the reversible phase change begins at about 195 K. This transition has been confirmed by both X-ray diffraction studies and a differential scanning calorimetry study.
