RESUMO

Body-centred cubic refractory multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs), with several refractory metal elements as constituents and featuring a yield strength greater than one gigapascal, are promising materials to meet the demands of aggressive structural applications1-6. Their low-to-no tensile ductility at room temperature, however, limits their processability and scaled-up application7-10. Here we present a HfNbTiVAl10 alloy that shows remarkable tensile ductility (roughly 20%) and ultrahigh yield strength (roughly 1,390 megapascals). Notably, these are among the best synergies compared with other related alloys. Such superb synergies derive from the addition of aluminium to the HfNbTiV alloy, resulting in a negative mixing enthalpy solid solution, which promotes strength and favours the formation of hierarchical chemical fluctuations (HCFs). The HCFs span many length scales, ranging from submicrometre to atomic scale, and create a high density of diffusive boundaries that act as effective barriers for dislocation motion. Consequently, versatile dislocation configurations are sequentially stimulated, enabling the alloy to accommodate plastic deformation while fostering substantial interactions that give rise to two unusual strain-hardening rate upturns. Thus, plastic instability is significantly delayed, which expands the plastic regime as ultralarge tensile ductility. This study provides valuable insights into achieving a synergistic combination of ultrahigh strength and large tensile ductility in MPEAs.

BACKGROUND: Lacunes are associated with cognitive impairment. We sought to identify strategic lacune locations associated with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and subtypes of MCI among older adults, and further to examine the role of white matter hyperintensities and perivascular spaces in the association. METHODS: This population-based cross-sectional study included 1230 dementia-free participants in the brain magnetic resonance imaging substudy (2018-2020) in MIND-China (Multimodal Interventions to Delay Dementia and Disability in Rural China). Lacunes were visually identified in frontal lobe, parieto-occipital lobe, temporal lobe, insula, basal ganglia, thalamus, cerebellum, and brainstem. MCI, amnestic MCI (aMCI), and nonamnestic MCI (naMCI) were defined following the Petersen's criteria. Data were analyzed using logistic regression models. RESULTS: Of the 1230 participants (age, ≥60 years; mean age, 69.40; SD, 4.30 years; 58.5% women), lacunes were detected in 357 people and MCI was defined in 286 individuals, including 243 with aMCI and 43 with naMCI. Lacunes in the supratentorial area, internal capsula, putamen/pallidum, and insula was significantly associated with increased odds ratio of MCI (multivariable-adjusted odds ratio ranged 1.40-3.21; P<0.05) and aMCI (multivariable-adjusted odds ratio ranged 1.46-3.36; P<0.05), whereas lacunes in the infratentorial area and brainstem were significantly associated with naMCI (multivariable-adjusted odds ratio ranged 2.68-3.46; P<0.01). Furthermore, the associations of lacunes in insula and internal capsula with MCI and aMCI, as well as the associations of lacunes in infratentorial area and brainstem with naMCI were present independent of white matter hyperintensities volume and perivascular spaces number. CONCLUSIONS: Lacunes in the internal capsula, putamen/pallidum, insula, and brainstem may represent the strategic lacunes that are independently associated with MCI, aMCI, or naMCI in Chinese older adults. The kidney and brain expressed protein (KIBRA) rs17070145 polymorphism is associated with both structure and activation of the olfactory cortex. However, no studies have thus far examined whether KIBRA can be linked with olfactory function and whether brain structure plays any role in the association. We addressed these questions in a population-based cross-sectional study among rural-dwelling older adults. This study included 1087 participants derived from the Multidomain Interventions to Delay Dementia and Disability in Rural China, who underwent the brain MRI scans in August 2018 to October 2020; of these, 1016 took the 16-item Sniffin' Sticks identification test and 634 (62.40%) were defined with olfactory impairment (OI). Data were analyzed using the voxel-based morphometry analysis and general linear, logistic, and structural equation models. The KIBRA rs17070145 C-allele (CC or CT vs. TT genotype) was significantly associated with greater gray matter volume (GMV) mainly in the bilateral orbitofrontal cortex and left thalamus (P < 0.05) and with the multi-adjusted odds ratio of 0.73 (95% confidence interval 0.56-0.95) for OI. The left thalamic GMV could mediate 8.08% of the KIBRA-olfaction association (P < 0.05). These data suggest that the KIBRA rs17070145 C-allele is associated with a reduced likelihood of OI among older adults, partly mediated through left thalamic GMV.

Bulimia, which means a person has episodes of eating a very large amount of food (bingeing) during which the person feels a loss of control over their eating, is the most primitive reason for being overweight and obese. The extended literature has indicated that childhood emotional abuse has a close relationship with adverse mood states, bulimia, and obesity. To comprehensively understand the potential links among these factors, we evaluated a multiple mediation model in which anxiety/depression and bulimia were mediators between childhood emotional abuse and body mass index (BMI). A set of self-report questionnaires, including the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), Beck Anxiety Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI), was sent out. Clinical data from 37 obese patients (age: 29.65 ± 5.35, body mass index (BMI): 37.59 ± 6.34) and 37 demographically well-matched healthy people with normal body weight (age: 31.35 ± 10.84, BMI: 22.16 ± 3.69) were included in the investigation. We first performed an independent t-test to compare all scales or subscale scores between the two groups. Then, we conducted Pearson correlation analysis to test every two variables' pairwise correlation. Finally, multiple mediation analysis was performed with BMI as the outcome variable, and childhood emotional abuse as the predictive variable. Pairs of anxiety, bulimia, and depression, bulimia were selected as the mediating variables in different multiple mediation models separately. The results show that the obese group reported higher childhood emotional abuse (t = 2.157, p = 0.034), worse mood state (anxiety: t = 5.466, p < 0.001; depression: t = 2.220, p = 0.030), and higher bulimia (t = 3.400, p = 0.001) than the healthy control group. Positive correlations were found in every pairwise combination of BMI, childhood emotional abuse, anxiety, and bulimia. Multiple mediation analyses indicate that childhood emotional abuse is positively linked to BMI (ß = 1.312, 95% CI = 0.482-2.141). The model using anxiety and bulimia as the multiple mediating variables is attested to play roles in the relationship between childhood emotional abuse and obesity (indirect effect = 0.739, 95% CI = 0.261-1.608, 56.33% of the total effect). These findings confirm that childhood emotional abuse contributes to adulthood obesity through the multiple mediating effects of anxiety and bulimia. The present study adds another potential model to facilitate our understanding of the eating psychopathology of obesity.

Accelerometers are commonly used to measure vibrations for condition monitoring in mechanical and civil structures; however, their high cost and point-based measurement approach present practical limitations. With rapid advancements in computer vision and deep learning, research into tracking the motion of individual pixels with vision cameras has increased. The recently developed CoTracker, a transformer-based model, has demonstrated excellence in motion tracking, yet its performance in measuring structural vibrations has not been fully explored. This paper investigates the efficacy of the CoTracker model in extracting full-field structural vibrations using cameras. It is initially applied to capture the dense point movements in video sequences of a cantilever beam recorded using a high-speed camera. Subsequently, modal analysis using delay-embedding dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) is conducted to extract modal parameters including natural frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes. The results, benchmarked against those from a reference accelerometer and the Finite Element Method (FEM) result, demonstrate CoTracker's high potential for general applicability in structural vibration measurements.

INTRODUCTION: To examine the burden and clusters of multimorbidity in association with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), dementia, and Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related plasma biomarkers among older adults. METHODS: This population-based study included 5432 participants (age ≥60 years); of these, plasma amyloid beta (Aß), total tau, and neurofilament light chain (NfL) were measured in a subsample (n = 1412). We used hierarchical clustering to generate five multimorbidity clusters from 23 chronic diseases. We diagnosed dementia and MCI following international criteria. Data were analyzed using logistic and linear regression models. RESULTS: The number of chronic diseases was associated with dementia (multivariable-adjusted odds ratio = 1.22; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.11 to 1.33), AD (1.13; 1.01 to 1.26), vascular dementia (VaD) (1.44; 1.25 to 1.64), and non-amnestic MCI (1.25; 1.13 to 1.37). Metabolic cluster was associated with VaD and non-amnestic MCI, whereas degenerative ocular cluster was associated with AD (p < 0.05). The number of chronic diseases was associated with increased plasma Aß and NfL (p < 0.05). DISCUSSION: Multimorbidity burden and clusters are differentially associated with subtypes of dementia and MCI and AD-related plasma biomarkers in older adults. HIGHLIGHTS: We used hierarchical clustering to generate five clusters of multimorbidity. The presence and load of multimorbidity were associated with dementia and mild cognitive impairment. Multimorbidity clusters were differentially associated with subtypes of dementia and Alzheimer's disease plasma biomarkers.

BACKGROUND: Macular edema (ME) is a common complication following branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) and is also the main reason for visual impairment. This study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of intravitreal ranibizumab (IVR) or dexamethasone implant (IDI) monotherapy, as well as the combination of IVR and IDI injections, in patients with ME secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO). METHODS: This multicenter, prospective, and comparative study included 292 patients with unilateral ME involvement (total of 292 eyes) secondary to BRVO. The patients were randomly assigned to three groups and followed up for 12 months. Patients in group 1 (n = 96) were treated with 3-dose loading IVR injections followed by a pro re nata (PRN) regimen. Patients in group 2 (n = 98) received IVR combined with IDI injection, followed by IVR PRN regimen. Patients in group 3 (n = 98) were treated with IDI injection, followed by repeated IDI injection based on clinical necessity. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central retinal thickness (CRT), complications, and frequency of injections were recorded and compared between the three groups. RESULTS: At baseline, the three groups did not differ in age, gender, duration of ME, BCVA, IOP, and CRT (P > 0.05). Mean number of total injections per eye within 12 months were 7.1 ± 2.3 (range 4-9) in group 1, 3.7 ± 1.5 (range 2-6) in group 2, and 1.8 ± 0.4 (range 1-3) in group 3. There was a statistical difference in the number of injections between group 1 and group 2 (P = 0.037). Eyes in group 3 received fewer injections than those in group 2, but the difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.052). BCVA improvement and CRT reduction were achieved in all groups and there was no significant difference between the three groups at the end of the 12th month. However, IOP elevation and cataract progression were more frequent in group 3, especially in those patients who received repeated IDI injections. CONCLUSION: Three therapeutic regimens had comparable efficacy in treating ME secondary to BRVO. Combination therapy had an advantage in maintaining good effect with fewer re-injections and complications. TRIAL REGISTRATION INFORMATION: The study complied with the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki and was approved by Xi'an Aier Ancient City Eye Hospital, Xi'an Aier Eye Hospital, and Xianyang Aier Eye Hospital ethics committees (2022SF-367).

Mixed plastic waste treatment has long been a significant challenge due to complex composition and sorting costs. In this study, we have achieved a breakthrough in converting mixed plastic wastes into a single chemical product using our innovative single-atom catalysts for the first time. The single-atom Ru catalyst can convert ∼90% of real mixed plastic wastes into methane products (selectivity >99%). The unique electronic structure of Ru sites regulates the adsorption energy of mixed plastic intermediates, leading to rapid decomposition of mixed plastics and superior cycle stability compared to traditional nanocatalysts. The global warming potential of the entire process was evaluated. Our proposed carbon-reducing process utilizing single-atom catalysts launches a new era of mixed plastic waste valorization.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is fibrotic lung disease with no effective treatment. It is characterized by destruction of alveolar structure and pulmonary interstitial fibrosis, leading to dyspnea and even asphyxia death of patients. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is considered to be a driving factor in the pathogenesis of IPF. Osteopontin (OPN) is a secreted protein widely present in the extracellular matrix and involved in the occurrence and development of a variety of diseases. METHODS: The original datasets were obtained from NCBI GEO databases analyzed with the online tool GEO2R and EasyGEO. Bleomycin induced mouse pulmonary fibrosis model and OPN/OPN-biotin treated mouse model were established to investigate the role of OPN in mouse pulmonary fibrosis and the target cells of OPN. A549 cells and HBE cells were used to explore the mechanism of OPN-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in epithelial cells and mass spectrometry was used to detect OPN downstream receptors. Precision-cut lung slices and lentivirus-treated mice with pulmonary fibrosis were used to examine the therapeutic effect of OPN and its downstream pathways on pulmonary fibrosis. RESULTS: We demonstrate that the content of OPN in IPF bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) is high compared to the normal groups, and its expression level is correlated with prognosis. At the animal level, OPN was highly expressed at all stages of pulmonary fibrosis in mice, and the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) could accurately reflect its expression in the lung. Next, we reveal that OPN was mainly expressed by macrophages and the main target cells of OPN were epithelial cells. Mice developed pulmonary fibrosis accompanied after treating the mice with OPN. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments confirmed that OPN could induce EMT of alveolar epithelial cells. Mechanistically, OPN binding triggered phosphorylation of FAK by CD44, thus activating snail1-mediated profibrotic protein synthesis. Inhibition of FAK phosphorylation and its downstream pathways can effectively alleviate pulmonary fibrosis in precision sections of lung tissue (PCLS) assay. OPN knockdown in bleomycin-induced lung fibrosis mice led to significantly less fibrosis. CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that OPN mediates lung fibrosis through EMT, implicating its potential therapeutic target and prognostic indicator role for IPF. OPN may be a target for the diagnosis and treatment of IPF.

Low-dimensional hybrid copper(I) halides attract considerable attention in the field of light emissions. In this work, we obtained the centimeter-sized single crystal of 1,3-propanediamine copper(I) iodide (PDACuI3) with a solvent evaporation method. The single crystal X-ray diffraction of PDACuI3 reveals that the [CuI4] tetrahedra form the corner-connected chains separated by PDAs, forming a one-dimensional structure with an orthorhombic space group of Pbca. The band gap is determined to be 4.03 eV, and the room temperature photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield is determined to be 26.5%. The thermal quenching and negative thermal quenching of emission are observed via temperature-dependent PL spectra, and our study shows that the intermediate nonradiative state below the self-trapped exciton state may get involved in these temperature-dependent behaviors. The X-ray scintillation performance of PDACuI3 single crystals is also evaluated, and the relative light output renewed to 94.3% of the fresh one after a low-temperature annealing. On the basis of our results, PDACuI3 single crystals provide nontoxicity and renewable scintillation performance, thus showing potential application in the area of low-cost radiation detectors.

BACKGROUND: Combinatorial immunotherapy strategies for enhancing the responsiveness of immune system have shown great promise for cancer therapy. Engineered nanoformulation incorporated toll-like receptor (TLR) 9 agonist CpG ODN has shown more positive results in suppressing tumor growth and can significantly enhance other immunotherapy activity with combinatorial effects due to the innate and adaptive immunostimulatory effects of CpG. RESULTS: In the present work, protamine sulfate (PS) and carboxymethyl ß-glucan (CMG) were used as nanomaterials to form nanoparticles through a self-assembly approach for CpG ODN encapsulation to generate CpG ODN-loaded nano-adjuvant (CNPs), which was subsequently mixed with the mixture of mouse melanoma-derived antigens of tumor cell lysates (TCL) and neoantigens to develop vaccine for anti-tumor immunotherapy. The obtained results showed that CNPs was able to effectively deliver CpG ODN into murine bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (DC) in vitro, and remarkably stimulate the maturation of DC cells with proinflammatory cytokine secretion. In addition, in vivo analysis showed that CNPs enhanced anti-tumor activity of PD1 antibody and CNPs-adjuvanted vaccine based on the mixture antigens of melanoma TCL and melanoma-specific neoantigen could not only induce anti-melanoma cellular immune responses, but also elicit melanoma specific humoral immune responses, which significantly inhibited xenograft tumor growth. Furthermore, CD16 CAR-T cells were generated by expressing CD16-CAR in CD3+CD8+ murine T cells. CONCLUSION: Our results eventually showed that anti-melanoma antibodies induced by CNPs-adjuvanted TCL vaccines were able to collaborate with CD16-CAR-T cells to generate an enhanced targeted anti-tumor effects through ADCC (antibody dependent cell cytotoxicity) approach. CD16 CAR-T cells has thus a great potential to be an universal promising strategy targeting on solid tumor synergistic immunotherapy via co-operation with TCL-based vaccine.

The colchicine binding site of tubulin is a promising target for discovering novel antitumour agents. Previously, we identified 2-aryl-4-amide-quinoline derivatives displayed moderate tubulin polymerisation inhibitory activity and broad-spectrum in vitro antitumour activity. In this study, structure based rational design and systematic structural optimisation were performed to obtain analogues C1∼J2 bearing diverse substituents and scaffolds. Among them, analogue G13 bearing a hydroxymethyl group displayed good tubulin polymerisation inhibitory activity (IC50 = 13.5 µM) and potent antiproliferative activity (IC50 values: 0.65 µM∼0.90 µM). G13 potently inhibited the migration and invasion of MDA-MB-231 cells, and displayed potent antiangiogenic activity. It efficiently increased intracellular ROS level and decreased MMP in cancer cells, and obviously induced the fragmentation and disassembly of the microtubules network. More importantly, G13 exhibited good in vivo antitumour efficacy in MDA-MB-231 xenograft model (TGI = 38.2%; i.p., 30 mg/kg).

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic, progressive, and fatal lung disease that is characterized by enhanced changes in stem cell differentiation and fibroblast proliferation. Lung resident mesenchymal stem cells (LR-MSCs) are important regulators of pathophysiological processes including tissue repair and inflammation, and evidence suggests that this cell population also plays an essential role in fibrosis. Our previous study demonstrated that Wnt/ß-catenin signaling is aberrantly activated in the lungs of bleomycin-treated mice and induces myofibroblast differentiation of LR-MSCs. However, the underlying correlation between LR-MSCs and the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling remains poorly understood. We found that Wnt8b was highly expressed by LR-MSCs undergoing myofibroblast differentiation. In vitro, Wnt8b promoted LR-MSCs differentiate into myofibroblasts via activating Wnt/ß-catenin signaling. Moreover, siRNA-mediated inhibition of Wnt8b prevented Transforming growth factor (TGF)-ß1-induced myofibroblast differentiation of LR-MSCs in vitro and ameliorated pulmonary fibrotic lesions. Our study identified Wnt proteins and Wnt/ß-catenin signaling in pulmonary fibrosis in vitro and in vivo, and highlighted Wnt8b as a potential therapeutic target in pulmonary fibrosis. Moreover, these finding might provide a new perspective in the development of treatment strategies for IPF.

Previous studies exhibited reproductive and neurodevelopmental toxicity in rats exposed to Di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP). However, the effects of DBP exposure on the other endocrine organ are still unclear. This study aimed to assess the impact of DBP exposure on the thyroid of male rats and the associated mechanisms. Here, rats were respectively treated with DBP at 0 (control), 50 (low dose), 250 (medium dose), or 500 (high dose) mg/kg/day dissolved in 1 ml quantity of corn oil by intragastrical administration for two weeks. The results demonstrated that the proliferation and inflammatory response changes were significantly different compared to the control. In vivo DBP is mainly converted to mono-n-butyl phthalate (MBP), an active form producing untoward reactions of DBP exposure. Therefore, for in vitro experiments, we treated the thyroid follicular epithelial cell line (Nthy-ori 3-1) in a temporal gradient using 1 mM MBP. Further in vitro studies showed that MBP exposure upregulated tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), as well as interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) by activating AKT/NF-κB/NLRP3 signaling. Meanwhile, we detected that Pellino2 (Peli2) played an essential role in promoting the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome. Briefly speaking, this study confirmed that DBP exposure caused impaired thyroid structure and thyroid inflammation in male rats, which offered new views into the harm of DBP exposure on the endocrine organ.

Previous studies have revealed nephrotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, subchronic developmental and reproductive toxicity in rats exposed to fluorotelomer alcohol (FTOH). However, the effects of embryonic 6:2 FTOH exposure on the reproductive system of offspring mice remain unclear. The purpose of this study is to explore the reproductive toxic effects of embryonic 6:2 FTOH exposure on offspring male mice and the related molecular mechanisms. Therefore, the pregnant mice were given corn oil or 6:2 FTOH by gavage from gestational days 12.5-21.5. The results demonstrated that embryonic 6:2 FTOH exposure resulted in disrupted testicular structure, low expression of tight junction protein between Sertoli cells (SCs), impaired blood-testis barrier (BTB) formation and maturation, reduced sperm viability and increased malformation, and induced testicular inflammation in the offspring of mice. Further in vitro studies showed that 6:2 FTOH treatment upregulated MMP-8 expression by activating AKT/NF-κB signaling pathway, which in turn enhanced occludin cleavage leading to the disruption of SCs barrier integrity. In summary, this study demonstrated that 6:2 FTOH exposure caused reproductive dysfunction in male offspring through disruption of BTB, which provided new insights into the effects of 6:2 FTOH exposure on the offspring.

RESUMO

Mandibulotomy provides good access for monobloc compartmental resection of squamous cell carcinoma in the proper oral cavity. Various designs of osteotomy have been reported, but few of them have considered the local anatomical conditions, and thus related complications occasionally happen. We devised a paramedian lateral-angled mandibulotomy to reduce the side injuries.

Chondrosarcomas (CHS) are malignant mesenchymal tumors arising from cartilage. Chondrosarcomas arising in the temporomandibular joint are especially rare. Herein, the authors report an unusual case of a 50-year-old female who presented with a progressive swelling in the left preauricular region. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed an osteolytic and expansive lesion in the left condyle. The diagnosis tended to be a malignant tumor. A resection guide and 3-dimensional printed titanium prosthesis for condyle reconstruction were designed. Extended resection of the left condyle and reconstruction were performed. The pathologic diagnosis was consistent with CHS (grade II). There was no tumor recurrence or distant metastasis at the 6-year follow-up, and good occlusion and satisfactory function of the temporomandibular joint were regained.

Squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) are common malignant tumors in the oral and maxillofacial region. However, SCCs secondary to marsupialization of odontogenic radicular cysts are extremely rare. The authors report an unusual case of a 43-year-old male presented with dull pain in the right molar region of the mandible without numbness of lower lips, who had a long history of smoking, alcohol consumption, and betel nut chewing. Computerized tomography revealed a round well-defined unilocular radiolucent at the apex of lower right premolars, 2 nonvital teeth. The clinical diagnosis was the radicular cyst of the right mandible. The patient was initially treated with root canal therapy of the teeth followed by marsupialization with a mandibular vestibular groove incision. While the patient did not follow the instruction of irrigation of the cyst and had no regular follow-up. The reexamination of computerized tomography indicated a round well-defined unilocular radiolucent at the apex of lower right premolars and filled with a soft tissue without clear boundary with buccal muscles at 31 months follow-up. There were no masses or ulcer around the mandibular vestibular groove incision and the patient had no sign of numbness of lower lips. The clinical diagnosis was the radicular cyst of right mandible with infection. A curettage was performed. However, the pathologic diagnosis was well-differentiated SCC. An extended radical surgical resection including segmental resection of the right mandible was performed. The histopathology was well-differentiated SCC without the cyst epithelium and invasion of bone, which can be distinguished from primary intraosseous SCC. The case indicates that marsupialization performed in patients with a history of smoking, alcohol consumption, and betel nut chewing, has a risk of suffering from oral SCC.

Surface and strain engineering are two effective strategies to improve performance; however, synergetic controls of surface and strain effects remains a grand challenge. Herein, we report a highly efficient and stable electrocatalyst with defect-rich Pt atomic layers coating an ordered Pt3Sn intermetallic core. Pt atomic layers enable the generation of 4.4% tensile strain along the [001] direction. Benefiting from synergetic controls of surface and strain engineering, Pt atomic-layer catalyst (Ptatomic-layer) achieves a remarkable enhancement on ethanol electrooxidation performance with excellent specific activity of 5.83 mA cm-2 and mass activity of 1166.6 mA mg Pt-1, which is 10.6 and 3.6 times higher than the commercial Pt/C, respectively. Moreover, the intermetallic core endows Ptatomic-layer with outstanding durability. In situ infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy as well as density functional theory calculations reveal that tensile strain and rich defects of Ptatomci-layer facilitate to break C-C bond for complete ethanol oxidation for enhanced performance.

Microcystin-leucine-arginine (MC-LR) is positively linked with multiple cancers in humans. However, the association between MC-LR and the risk and prognosis of prostate cancer has not been conducted in epidemiological studies. No reported studies have linked MC-LR exposure to the poor prognosis of prostate cancer by conducting experimental studies. The content of MC-LR was detected in most of the aquatic food in wet markets and supermarkets in Nanjing and posed a health risk for consumers. MC-LR levels in both prostate cancer tissues and serum were significantly higher than controls. The adjusted odds ratio (OR) for prostate cancer risk by serum MC-LR was 1.75 (95%CI: 1.21-2.52) in the whole subjects, and a positive correlation between MC-LR and advanced tumor stage was observed. Survival curve analysis indicated patients with higher MC-LR levels in tissues exhibited poorer overall survival. Human, animal, and cell studies confirmed that MC-LR exposure increases the expression of estrogen receptor-α (ERα) and promotes epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in prostate cancer. Moreover, MC-LR-induced decreased E-cadherin levels, increased vimentin levels, and increased migratory and invasive capacities of prostate cancer cells were markedly suppressed upon ERα knockdown. MC-LR-induced xenograft tumor growth and lung metastasis in BALB/c nude mice can be effectively alleviated with ERα knockdown. Our data demonstrated that MC-LR upregulated vimentin and downregulated E-cadherin through activating ERα, promoting migration and invasion of prostate cancer cells. Our findings highlight the role of MC-LR in prostate cancer, providing new perspectives to understand MC-LR-induced prostatic toxicity.
