BACKGROUND: There is a need to examine the psychological traits that impact the "personal quality of life" and "personal well-being" of caregivers in the workplace. PURPOSE: This research proposes the resource-based reflective risk assessment model using a "at risk" framework to integrate mental health traits, producing a "portrait" of nursing quality of life and well-being. METHODS: Cross-sectional surveys on the quality of work life of nurses in Australia and Mexico were used to collect data. FINDINGS: Significant differences based on the ProQOL "at-risk" categories were found in all the 10 constructs with a similar pattern between the 2 countries. The proposed model was shown to be a useful framework for integrating mental health constructs that have a "draining" and "gaining" effect on nurses' well-being. DISCUSSION: The proposed model provides framework for understanding nursing well-being as well an integrating structure to add additional constructs to construct a comprehensive portrait of nurses' quality work life and personal well-being.

AIMS: This study re-examines the validity of a model of occupational resilience for use by nursing managers, which focused on an individual differences approach that explained buffering factors against negative outcomes such as burnout for nurses. BACKGROUND: The International Collaboration of Workforce Resilience model (Rees et al., 2015, Frontiers in Psychology, 6, 73) provided initial evidence of its value as a parsimonious model of resilience, and resilience antecedents and outcomes (e.g., burnout). Whether this model's adequacy was largely sample dependent, or a valid explanation of occupational resilience, has been subsequently un-examined in the literature to date. To address this question, we re-examined the model with a larger and an entirely new sample of student nurses. METHODS: A sample of nursing students (n = 708, AgeM ( SD ) = 26.4 (7.7) years), with data examined via a rigorous latent factor structural equation model. RESULTS: The model upheld many of its relationship predictions following further testing. CONCLUSIONS: The model was able to explain the individual differences, antecedents, and burnout-related outcomes, of resilience within a nursing context. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT: The results highlight the importance of skills training to develop mindfulness and self-efficacy among nurses as a means of fostering resilience and positive psychological adjustment.

AIM: This study had conducted a comprehensive analysis of the psychometric properties of Proqol 5, professional quality of work instrument among nurses and palliative care-workers on the basis of three independent datasets. The goal is to see the general applicability of this instrument across multiple populations. BACKGROUND: Although the Proqol scale has been widely adopted, there are few attempts that have thoroughly analyzed this instrument across multiple datasets using multiple populations. METHODS: A questionnaire was developed and distributed to palliative care-workers in Canada and Nurses at two hospitals in Australia and Canada, this resulted in 273 datasets from the Australian and 303 datasets from the Canadian nurses and 503 datasets from the Canadian palliative care-workers. A comprehensive psychometric property analysis was conducted including inter-item correlations, tests of reliability, and both convergent and discriminant validity as well as construct validity analyses. In addition, to test for the reverse coding artifacts in the BO scale, exploratory factor analysis was adopted. RESULTS: The psychometric property analysis of Proqol 5 was satisfactory for the compassion satisfaction construct. However, there are concerns with respect to the burnout and secondary trauma stress scales and recommendations are made regarding the coding and specific items which should improve the reliability and validity of these scales. CONCLUSION: This research establishes the strengths and weaknesses of the Proqol instrument and demonstrates how it can be improved. Through specific recommendations, the academic community is invited to revise the burnout and secondary traumatic stress scales in an effort to improve Proqol 5 measures.

BACKGROUND: Building resilience among nurses is one of the ways to support and retain nurses in the profession. Prior literature which evaluated influence of resilience on psychological outcomes, were conducted in relatively homogeneous populations. It is of interest to evaluate whether relationships between resilience and psychological outcomes remain consistent across nations and among different nursing populations. AIM: To evaluate a theoretical model of the impact of resilience on burnout (BO), secondary traumatic stress (STS) and compassion satisfaction (CS) by comparing results between nurses in Canada and Singapore. METHOD: A self-reported questionnaire consisting of questions on demographics, resilience (Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale), and psychological adjustment (Professional Quality of Life) was administered via an online survey. One thousand three hundred and thirty-eight nurses working in two Academic Medical Centres in Singapore responded to the online survey. Similar data was also collected from 329 nurses in Canada. Hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling. RESULTS: Resilience exerts a significant negative direct impact on STS, and a significant negative direct impact on BO. Additionally, resilience has a positive direct impact on compassion satisfaction. STS exerts a positive direct impact on BO while CS has a negative direct impact on BO. CONCLUSION: Current study affirmed significant associations between resilience and professional quality of life. Knowledge on resilience is key in informing design and implementation of resilience-building strategies that include professional development, and strengthening of interpersonal skills. A resilience-based approach will help reduce nurses' BO and STS while caring for their patients, and in turn reduce turnover.

AIM: To explore compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction with the potential contributing factors of anxiety, depression and stress. BACKGROUND: To date, no studies have connected the quality of work-life with other contributing and co-existing factors such as depression, anxiety and stress. METHOD: A self-report exploratory cross sectional survey of 132 nurses working in a tertiary hospital. RESULT: The reflective assessment risk profile model provides an excellent framework for examining the relationships between the professional quality of work factors and contributing factors within the established risk profiles. The results show a definite pattern of risk progression for the six factors examined for each risk profile. Additionally, burnout and secondary traumatic stress were significantly related to higher anxiety and depression levels. Higher anxiety levels were correlated with nurses who were younger, worked full-time and without a postgraduate qualification. Twenty percent had elevated levels of compassion fatigue: 7.6% having a very distressed profile. At-risk nurses' stress and depression scores were significantly higher than nurses with higher compassion satisfaction scores. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGERS: The employed nurse workforce would benefit from a psychosocial capacity building intervention that reduces a nurse's risk profile, thus enhancing retention.

This article introduces a significant advancement with the "Theory of Employee Planned Behavior" (TEPB), a novel extension of the well-established Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). The TEPB uniquely positions job satisfaction as a central determinant in driving organizational performance. Using data from county-level government institutions in the United States, this research offers a nuanced exploration into how employee satisfaction influences organizational commitment and citizenship behaviors, which, in turn, substantially impact organizational performance. Our approach utilizes a significant dataset involving 372 dyads across hierarchical levels in government institutions. Through the application of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), we rigorously validate the TEPB model. The results highlight a significant relationship where enhanced job satisfaction leads to stronger organizational commitment. This heightened commitment further fosters organizational citizenship behaviors, crucial in achieving superior organizational performance. This work notably extends the TPB model by integrating organizational performance as a consequential outcome. It also provides empirical evidence of the direct relationship between job satisfaction and organizational performance, specifically in the context of government institutions. Such findings are invaluable for organizational executives and policymakers in recognizing the paramount importance of employee satisfaction for organizational success. Overall, the TEPB model presented in this study offers a holistic and practical framework for organizations seeking to understand and effectively manage employee behavior. By focusing on job satisfaction, organizations can foster a more committed and proactive workforce, significantly improving performance and efficiency.

BACKGROUND: Despite the increasingly crucial role of the healthcare workforce and volunteers working in hospice and palliative care (HPC), very little is known about factors that promote or limit the positive outcomes associated with practicing compassion. AIM: The purpose of this study was to: 1) understand the complex relationships among Compassion Satisfaction, Compassion Fatigue and Burnout within the hospice and palliative care workforce and 2) explore how key practice characteristics - practice status, professional affiliation, and principal institution - interact with the measured constructs of Compassion Satisfaction, Compassion Fatigue and Burnout. DESIGN: Self-reported measures of Compassion Satisfaction, Compassion Fatigue and Burnout, using validated scales, as well as questions to describe socio-demographic profiles and key practice characteristics were obtained. SETTING/PARTICIPANTS: A national survey of HPC workers, comprising clinical, administrative, allied health workers and volunteers, was completed. Respondents from hospital, community-based and care homes informed the results of our study (n = 630). RESULTS: Our results indicate a significant negative correlation between Compassion Satisfaction and Burnout (r = -0.531, p < 0.001) and between Compassion Satisfaction and Compassion Fatigue (r = -0.208, p < 0.001), and a significant positive correlation between Burnout and Compassion Fatigue (r = 0.532, p < 0.001). Variations in self-reported levels of the above constructs were noted by key practice characteristics. Levels of all three constructs are significantly, but differentially, affected by type of service provided, principal institution, practice status and professional affiliation. Results indicate that health care systems could increase the prevalence of Compassion Satisfaction through both policy and institutional level programs to support HPC professionals in their jurisdictions.

Pediatric palliative care is an evolving field of practice in social work. As such, research plays a critical role in informing best social work practices in this area. For parents, caring for a child with a life-limiting illness (LLI) is a stressful experience that compounds the usual challenges of parenting. The negative aspects of caring for a child with an LLI are well documented. In the face of such adversity, parent caregivers can also experience positive changes caring for children with even the most serious conditions. This article presents results from a research study of posttraumatic growth in parents who are caring for a child with a LLI. Using mixed methods, two overarching themes were prominent in both the quantitative and qualitative data. The first describes stress related to financial burden associated with caregiving. The second theme concerns the posttraumatic growth experienced by the parent caregivers. The quantitative and qualitative data have been woven together to underscore issues and parental perspectives related to these two themes. This provides a unique and important platform for parent caregivers' experiences that can inform the work of social workers and other pediatric palliative care professionals.

This secondary analysis of data examined the psychosocial outcomes of meaning in caregiving, self-esteem, optimism, burden, depression, spirituality, and posttraumatic growth in 273 parents caring for children with life-limiting illnesses to (a) determine if there were gender differences and (b) identify gender-specific correlations among these outcomes. Findings suggest that significant gender differences exist. Women reported higher average scores compared with men for meaning in caregiving, depression, burden, and posttraumatic growth and lower average scores for optimism. Correlations also revealed some significant differences. Health care professionals need to be aware of gender differences and tailor their interventions appropriately.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Nurses experience compassion fatigue (CF), depression, burnout (BO), and even signs of post-traumatic stress disorder. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL) among nurses in the Southeast Asia context. METHODS: Psychometric testing of interitem correlations and reliability, and both convergent and discriminant validity, as well as construct validity analyses was conducted among 1,338 nurses from two academic centers in Singapore. RESULTS: Findings demonstrated significant interconstruct correlations among the three subscales of ProQOL, namely compassion satisfaction (CS), BO, and secondary traumatic stress (STS). ProQOL displayed satisfactory internal consistency and discriminant validity. CONCLUSIONS: Psychometric properties of the CS component were found to be satisfactory. ProQOL may be integrated into strategies in supporting and improving nurses' QoL which could focus to lessen BO and CF at work, as well as improving individual satisfaction in the care of patients.

For this study, we examined the nature of the unique relationships trait-negative affect and compassion satisfaction had with compassion fatigue and its components of secondary traumatic stress and burnout in 273 nurses from 1 metropolitan tertiary acute hospital in Western Australia. Participants completed the Professional Quality of Life Scale (Stamm, 2010), Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (Lovibond & Lovibond, 2004), and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (Spielberger, Gorsuch, Lushene, Vagg, & Jacobs, 1983). Bivariate correlation and hierarchical regression analyses were performed to examine and investigate 4 hypotheses. The results demonstrate a clear differential pattern of relationships with secondary traumatic stress and burnout for both trait-negative affect and compassion satisfaction. Trait-negative affect was clearly the more important factor in terms of its contribution to overall compassion fatigue and secondary traumatic stress. In contrast, compassion satisfaction's unique protective relationship only related to burnout, and not secondary traumatic stress. The results are therefore consistent with the view that compassion satisfaction may be an important internal resource that protects against burnout, but is not directly influential in protecting against secondary traumatic stress for nurses working in an acute-care hospital environment. With the projected nursing workforce shortages in Australia, it is apparent that a further understanding is warranted of how such personal variables may work as protective and risk factors.

The nature of nursing work is demanding and can be stressful. Previous studies have shown a high rate of burnout among employed nurses. Recently, efforts have been made to understand the role of resilience in determining the psychological adjustment of employed nurses. A theoretical model of resilience was proposed recently that includes several constructs identified in the literature related to resilience and to psychological functioning. As nursing students are the future of the nursing workforce it is important to advance our understanding of the determinants of resilience in this population. Student nurses who had completed their final practicum were invited to participate in an online survey measuring the key constructs of the ICWR-1 model. 422 students from across Australia and Canada completed the survey between July 2014 and July 2015. As well as several key demographics, trait negative affect, mindfulness, self-efficacy, coping, resilience, and burnout were measured. We used structural equation modeling and found support for the major pathways of the model; namely that resilience had a significant influence on the relationship between mindfulness, self-efficacy and coping, and psychological adjustment (burnout scores). Furthermore, as predicted, Neuroticism moderated the relationship between coping and burnout. Results are discussed in terms of potential approaches to supporting nursing students who may be at risk of burnout.

With the current shift to include positive outcomes of trauma, this research was designed to explore factors that allow growth to occur. Structural equation modeling was used to test a model for understanding posttraumatic growth. A sample (N = 174) of bereaved HIV/AIDS caregivers completed questionnaires. Spirituality, social support, and stressors were found to have a positive relationship with growth. Facilitation of posttraumatic growth is crucial to all helping professions.

When parents first meet their child, they take on the entwined joys and burdens of caring for another person. Providing care for their child becomes the basic expectation, during health and illness, through the developmental milestones, into adulthood and beyond. For those parents who have a child who is born with or is later diagnosed with a life-limiting illness, parents also become caregivers in ways that parents of predominantly well children do not. While the circumstances are undisputedly stressful, for some parents benefits can co-occur along with the negative outcomes. This article tests two structural equation models of possible factors that allow these parent caregivers to experience growth in the circumstances. The diagnosis and illness of a child in the context of pediatric palliative care is a very complex experience for parents. The stresses are numerous and life-changing and yet the parents in this research demonstrated growth as measured by the Post Traumatic Growth Inventory. It appears that particular personal resources reflected in personal well-being are a precursor to the process of positive meaning making, which then, in turn, contributes to growth. The path to posttraumatic growth is not a simple one, but this research contributes to further elucidating it.
