RESUMO

In this work, we present the results of the ortho-positronium (o-Ps) annihilation lifetimes and nitrogen adsorption measurements for different porous materials and an approach for describing the annihilation of o-Ps in a pore, which results in a surface-volume formula (SVF) for calculating the pore-related o-Ps lifetime. This proposed formula gives the relationship between the o-Ps annihilation rate and the effective pore radius, bulk composition, and pore structure, including pore geometry and topology. The pore-related o-Ps lifetimes of different materials calculated by the SVF are consistent with experimental results for both micro- and mesopores (and macropores) with different geometries and topologies. The SVF is convenient for calculations of pore dimensions for many cases of metal organic frameworks and zeolites. This approach enables us to fully explain the temperature dependence of the o-Ps annihilation lifetime over a wide temperature range, 20-700 K.

RESUMO

Searching for thiosemicarbazone derivatives with the potential to inhibit acetylcholinesterase for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an important current goal. The QSARKPLS, QSARANN, and QSARSVR models were constructed using binary fingerprints and physicochemical (PC) descriptors of 129 thiosemicarbazone compounds screened from a database of 3791 derivatives. The R 2 and Q 2 values for the QSARKPLS, QSARANN, and QSARSVR models are greater than 0.925 and 0.713 using dendritic fingerprint (DF) and PC descriptors, respectively. The in vitro pIC50 activities of four new design-oriented compounds N1, N2, N3, and N4, from the QSARKPLS model using DFs, are consistent with the experimental results and those from the QSARANN and QSARSVR models. The designed compounds N1, N2, N3, and N4 do not violate Lipinski-5 and Veber rules using the ADME and BoiLED-Egg methods. The binding energy, kcal mol-1, of the novel compounds to the 1ACJ-PDB protein receptor of the AChE enzyme was also obtained by molecular docking and dynamics simulations consistent with those predicted from the QSARANN and QSARSVR models. New compounds N1, N2, N3, and N4 were synthesized, and the experimental in vitro pIC50 activity was determined in agreement with those obtained from in silico models. The newly synthesized thiosemicarbazones N1, N2, N3, and N4 can inhibit 1ACJ-PDB, which is predicted to be able to cross the barrier. The DFT B3LYP/def-SV(P)-ECP quantization calculation method was used to calculate E HOMO and E LUMO to account for the activities of compounds N1, N2, N3, and N4. The quantum calculation results explained are consistent with those obtained in in silico models. The successful results here may contribute to the search for new drugs for the treatment of AD.

RESUMO

Cu nanoparticles are a potential material for creating novel alternative antimicrobial products due to their unique antibacterial/antifungal properties, stability, dispersion, low cost and abundance as well as being economical and ecofriendly. In this work, carboxymethyl cellulose coated core/shell SiO2@Cu nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by a simple and effective chemical reduction process. The initial SiO2 NPs, which were prepared from rice husk ash, were coated by a copper ultrathin film using hydrazine and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as reducing agent and stable agent, respectively. The core/shell SiO2@Cu nanoparticles with an average size of ~19 nm were surrounded by CMC. The results indicated that the SiO2@Cu@CMC suspension was a homogenous morphology with a spherical shape, regular dispersion and good stability. Furthermore, the multicomponent SiO2@Cu@CMC NPs showed good antifungal activity against Phytophthora capsici (P. capsici). The novel Cu NPs-based multicomponent suspension is a key compound in the development of new fungicides for the control of the Phytophthora disease.

RESUMO

Colloidal solutions of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized by gamma Co-60 irradiation using different stabilizers, namely polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), alginate, and sericin. The particle size measured from TEM images was 4.3, 6.1, 7.6, and 10.2 nm for AgNPs/PVP, AgNPs/PVA, AgNPs/alginate, and AgNPs/sericin, respectively. The influence of different stabilizers on the antibacterial activity of AgNPs was investigated. Results showed that AgNPs/alginate exhibited the highest antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli) among the as-synthesized AgNPs. Handwash solution has been prepared using Na lauryl sulfate as surfactant, hydroxyethyl cellulose as binder, and 15 mg/L of AgNPs/alginate as antimicrobial agent. The obtained results on the antibacterial test of handwash for the dilution to 3 mg AgNPs/L showed that the antibacterial efficiency against E. coli was of 74.6%, 89.8%, and 99.0% for the contacted time of 1, 3, and 5 min, respectively. Thus, due to the biocompatibility of alginate extracted from seaweed and highly antimicrobial activity of AgNPs synthesized by gamma Co-60 irradiation, AgNPs/alginate is promising to use as an antimicrobial agent in biomedicine, cosmetic, and in other fields.

RESUMO

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with diameter about 12 nm were immobilized on the surface of cotton fabrics by γ-irradiation of fabrics in the AgNO3 chitosan solution. Effects of absorbed dose, concentration of AgNO3 solution on immobilization of the AgNPs on fabrics were investigated. The optimal dose was selected to be 13.8 kGy and the suitable concentration of AgNO3 was 1.5mM in 1% chitosan solution. The content of AgNPs on fabrics was of 1,696 ± 80 mg/kg for these conditions. The presence of AgNPs on fabrics was confirmed from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images and X ray diffraction (XRD) patterns. The antibacterial activity of AgNPs/cotton fabrics after 40 washings against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli was found to be 99.99%. In addition, the AgNPs fabrics were innoxious to the skin (k=0) after 1, 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40 washings by skin-irritation testing to animal (rabbit).

RESUMO

Chitosan from squid pens with deacetylation degree (DD) of 70% and average molecular weight (Mw0) 90.5×103 in dilute lactic acid solution containing H2O2 (1%) was effectively degraded by irradiation with gamma 60Co radiation (1.33kGy/h) at doses in the range 4-16kGy. Based on the results of Mw measured by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), it was concluded that there was particularly strong synergy between H2O2 and radiation for degradation at the lower radiation doses studied. Radiation scission yields (Gs) were found out to be 2.2µmol/J and 0.2µmol/J for 5% chitosan with and without 1% H2O2, respectively. The DD of degraded chitosan measured from IR spectra was almost unchanged by the treatment.

RESUMO

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with diameter from 4 to 10nm, capping by hyaluronan (HA) were synthesized using a γ-irradiation method. The maximum absorption wavelengths at 517-525 nm of colloidal AuNPs/HA solutions were measured by UV-vis spectroscopy. The size and size distribution of AuNPs were determined from TEM images. The influence of various factors on the size of AuNPs particularly the concentration of Au3+ and HA, and dose rate were also investigated. Results indicated that higher dose rate and HA concentration favor smaller sizes of AuNPs whereas the size increases with Au3+ concentration. The colloidal AuNPs/HA solution was fairly stable more than 6 months under storage at ambient condition. The AuNPs stabilized by biocompatible HA with the size less than 10nm as prepared can potentially be applied in biomedicines and cosmetics.

RESUMO

Degraded alginate compounds with molecular weights of 7-26, 40-77, or 11-26 kDa were obtained by γ irradiation, hydrogen peroxide (5% H(2)O(2)) treatment, or a combination treatment involving ionizing radiation and H(2)O(2), respectively. The 14 kDa oligoalginate, prepared by the combined method, promoted the growth of mustard greens and lettuce at an optimal concentration of 75 mg/L. The growth promotion effects of the oligoalginate prepared by γ irradiation in the presence of H(2)O(2) were statistically equivalent to those of the oligoalginate prepared by γ irradiation only. The combination of γ irradiation and H(2)O(2) reduced the required irradiation dosage by a factor of 9 relative to the oligoalginate produced by γ irradiation only. The combination treatment (γ irradiation/H(2)O(2)) may be carried out on a large scale at low cost to produce oligoalginate for use as a plant growth promoter in agricultural industries.
