RESUMO

The methanolic extracts from the peels of Citrus limon were found to show antimutagenic effects against 3-amino-1,4-dimethyl-5H-pyrido[4,3-b]indole, and 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP) in the Ames test. From the methanolic extracts, four new coumarins (wakayamalimonol A-D) and a new furanocoumarin (wakayamalimonol E) were isolated together with fifteen known compounds. The absolute stereostructures of the new compounds were determined by chemical synthesis and the modified Mosher's method. Among the isolated constituents, coumarins, furanocoumarins, and limonoids showed antimutagenic effects in the Ames test. One of the major constituent, limonin, showed significant antimutagenic effects against mitomycinC and PhIP in the micronucleus test in vivo.

RESUMO

Soy sauce (Shoyu) is a traditional fermented seasoning of Japan and is available throughout the world. We investigated the effect of Shoyu polysaccharides (SPS) prepared from soy sauce on iron absorption in vitro and in vivo. First, by measuring the iron-binding capacity of SPS, it was found that SPS stabilized the solubility of ferrous iron at neutral pH's by forming a complex, Fe-SPS. Second, in experiments with animals, it was found that SPS enhanced the absorption and/or pooling of iron in organs when anemic rats were fed iron-supplemented diets. Third, in a 4-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled parallel group study, healthy women were treated with 600 mg of SPS (n = 22) or placebo (n = 23) each day. After the 4 weeks, serum levels of iron, hematocrit, and hemoglobin were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the SPS-treated than in the placebo-treated group. In conclusion, SPS of soy sauce enhanced iron absorption, and soy sauce is a potentially promising seasoning for the treatment of anemia through food.

RESUMO

Uterine myxoid leiomyosarcoma (MLMS) is an extremely rare variant of uterine leiomyosarcoma; only 56 cases were reported from 1982 to 2013. Uterine MLMS is characterized by a myxoid appearance and highly malignant behavior. We herein report a case involving a 65-year-old woman with uterine MLMS with a large tumor embolism that reached the right atrium. A total abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral salpingooophorectomy, and tumor embolism resection with the use of a heart-lung machine were performed. Epirubicin-ifosfamide chemotherapy in the adjuvant setting led to reductions in both the tumor emboli and peritoneal dissemination. The patient retained a good quality of life for 10 months after the initial surgery. She then developed progressive disease despite treatment with pazopanib. She died of her disease 14 months after the initial surgery. Although complete surgical resection of the tumor is desirable, tumor reduction surgery followed by adjuvant chemotherapy might help to retain a good quality of life. This is the first reported case of a primary uterine MLMS with tumor emboli.

RESUMO

Heparin-column chromatography and elastase-digestion of medium from hemocyte Kc167 gave Drosophila laminin alpha3/5betagamma trimer, alpha3/5LG2-3 and alpha3/5LG4-5 modules with eluting NaCl concentrations of 450, 280 and 450 mM, respectively. Kc167 cells bound dish surface with alpha3/5betagamma trimer or alpha3/5LG4-5, but not with alpha3/5LG2-3 modules. Cell binding was counteracted by treating with heparin or heparan sulfate. RNA interference of syndecan in Kc167 cells impaired the binding, but that of dally or dally-like did not. Green fluorescent protein-expressing hemocytes also bound surface with alpha3/5betagamma trimer or alpha3/5LG4-5 module. Thus, syndecan-dependent binding of hemocytes to laminin may have a potential role in sessile hemocytes islets formation in T2-A8 segments of Drosophila.
