RESUMO

We present optimization results on the design of a polymer optical fiber single point sensor suitable for photoluminescence-based sensing. The single point sensing design consists of one or two annular cavities, separated by a small distance, milled into the fiber and subsequently filled with a thick solution of polymer, solvent, and photoluminescent molecules, which is then allowed to dry. The design is tested by varying the depth and length of a single cavity and utilizing two cavities with varying separations. Results from experiments show a maximum response at a separation of 2 mm for which we present an analytical explanation. A geometrical, numerical simulation model, taking into account both skew and meridional rays, is developed and shows very good agreement with the experimental results. The fiber design presents a general platform that has the potential for the fabrication of multi-point photoluminescent sensors, for which it is necessary to have several points along the fiber functionalized for sensing. Furthermore, the approach with polymer fibers and polymer sensing gels allows for a robust integration of the sensing matrix and the optical fiber, more so than is possible using glass optical fibers.

RESUMO

We present an all-polymer optical fiber sensor for the sensing of dissolved oxygen by phase-fluorometry. The sensing matrix is applied as a film on the fiber end-surface, and consists of poly-methylmethacrylate (PMMA), the oxygen quenchable luminophore platinum-octaethylporphyrin (PtOEP) and the luminophore coumarin 545T for increasing the brightness of PtOEP by way of resonance energy transfer (RET), also called light harvesting. We show that by using Hansen Solubility Parameters (HSPs), it is possible to quantitatively formulate a solvent mixture with a good solubility of the polymer matrix and the luminophores simultaneously. Our approach can readily be extended to other polymers and luminophores and is therefore a valuable tool for researchers working with photoluminescence and polymeric matrices.

RESUMO

We report on a simple chemical etching method that enables nonlinear tapering of Polymer Optical Fiber (POF) tips to manufacture Compound Parabolic Concentrator (CPC) fiber tips. We show that, counter-intuitively, nonlinear tapering can be achieved by first etching the core and not the cladding. The etching mechanism is modelled and etched tips are characterized both geometrically and optically in a fluorescence glucose sensor chemistry. A Zemax model of the CPC tipped sensor predicts an optimal improvement in light capturing efficiency of a factor of 3.96 compared to the conventional sensor with a plane-cut fiber tip. A batch of eight CPC fiber tips has been manufactured by the chemical etching method. The batch average showed an increase of a factor of 3.16, which is only 20% less than the predicted value. The method is reproducible and can be up-scaled for mass production.

RESUMO

An endlessly single-mode doped microstructured poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) optical fiber is produced for effective fiber Bragg grating (FBG) photo-inscription by means of a 400 nm femtosecond pulsed laser and the phase mask technique. The fiber presents a uniform benzyl dimethyl ketal (BDK) distribution in its core without drastic loss increase. It was produced using the selected center hole doping technique, and the BDK dopant acts as a photoinitiator. In this Letter, we report a rapidly growing process of the grating reflection band. For an 11 mW mean laser power, the FBG reflectivity reaches 83% in only 40 s.

RESUMO

In this paper, we present numerical and experimental results on Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR) refractive index (RI) sensitivity, Figure of Merit (FoM), and penetration depth (dp) dependence on spherical gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) size, and the effects of AuNP dimer interparticle distance (ds) studied numerically. These parameters were calculated and observed for d = 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 nm diameter spherical AuNPs. Our investigation shows d = 60 nm AuNPs give the best FoM. The AuNP dimer interparticle distance can significantly influence the RI sensitivity. Therefore, the effect of distances between pairs of d = 20 nm and 60 nm AuNPs is shown. We discuss the importance of penetration depth information for AuNPs functionalized with aptamers for biosensing in the context of aptamer size.
