The study of biocultural diversity requires the use of appropriate concepts and analytical tools. Particularly, there is a need of indices capable to show the degree of stratification in the set of interactions among cultures and groups of plants and animals in a given region. Here, we present a mathematical approach based on the mutual Shannon information theory to study the relationships among cultural and biological groups. Biocultural complexity was described in terms of effective biocultural units, a new concept defined in this work. From the mathematical formulation of biocultural complexity, formulas were derived to measure the specificity of biological groups and the specialization of cultures, based on the association of human societies with plant or animal groups. To exemplify the concepts and tools, two data sets were analyzed; 1) a set that included artificial data in order to demonstrate the use of the formulas and calculate the indices, and 2) a set that included published data on the use of 18 mushroom species by people in five villages of eastern India. Analysis of the first data set revealed a clear case of biocultural complexity, whereas that of the second set showed that the villages and the use of biological resources composed a single biocultural unit. Overall, hypothesis testing of the association among cultures and biological species was consistent with the information that was provided by the new indices.

The cultivated diploid, Gossypium arboreum L., (A genome) is an invaluable genetic resource for improving modern tetraploid cotton (G. hirsutum L. and G. barbadense L.) cultivars. The objective of this research is to select a set of informative and robust microsatellites for studying genetic relationships among accessions of geographically diverse G. arboreum cultivars. From more than 1,500 previously developed simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers, 115 genomic (BNL) and EST-derived (MUCS and MUSS) markers were used to evaluate the allelic diversity of a core panel of G. arboreum accessions. These SSR data enabled advanced genome analyses. A set of 25 SSRs were selected based both upon their high level of informativeness (PIC > or = 0.50) and the production of clear PCR bands on agarose gels. Subsequently, 96 accessions representing a wide spectrum of diversity of G. arboreum cultivars were analyzed with these markers. The 25 SSR loci revealed 75 allelic variants (polymorphisms) ranging from 2 to 4 alleles per locus. The Neighborjoining (NJ) method, based on genetic dissimilarities, revealed that cultivars from geographically adjacent countries tend to cluster together. Outcomes of this research should be useful in decreasing redundancy of effort and in constructing a core collection of G. arboreum, important for efficient use of this genetic resource in cotton breeding.

Soybean is the world's leading source of vegetable protein and demand for its seed continues to grow. Breeders have successfully increased soybean yield, but the genetic architecture of yield and key agronomic traits is poorly understood. We developed a 40-mating soybean nested association mapping (NAM) population of 5,600 inbred lines that were characterized by single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers and six agronomic traits in field trials in 22 environments. Analysis of the yield, agronomic, and SNP data revealed 23 significant marker-trait associations for yield, 19 for maturity, 15 for plant height, 17 for plant lodging, and 29 for seed mass. A higher frequency of estimated positive yield alleles was evident from elite founder parents than from exotic founders, although unique desirable alleles from the exotic group were identified, demonstrating the value of expanding the genetic base of US soybean breeding.

Isoflavones from soybeans [ Glycine max (L.) Merr.] have a significant impact on human health to reduce the risk of several major diseases. Breeding soybean for high isoflavone content in the seed is possible through marker-assisted selection (MAS) which can be based on quantitative trait loci (QTL). The objective of this study was to identify QTL controlling isoflavone content in a set of 'MD96-5722' by 'Spencer' recombinant inbred line (RIL) populations of soybean. Wide variations were found for seed concentrations of daidzein, glycitein, genistein, and total isoflavones among the RIL populations. Three QTL were identified on three different linkage groups (LG) represented by three different chromosomes (Chr). One QTL that controlled daidzein content was identified on LG A1 (Chr 5), and two QTL that underlay glycitein content were identified on LG K (Chr 9) and LG B2 (Chr 14). Identified QTL could be functional in developing soybean with preferable isoflavone concentrations in the seeds through MAS.
