RESUMO

BACKGROUND: We investigated whether higher fibrotic burden was independently associated with poorer kidney outcomes in patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related cirrhosis. METHODS: A total of 1691 patients with radiologically diagnosed HBV-related cirrhosis but without baseline chronic kidney disease (CKD) who underwent transient elastography (TE) between March 2012 and August 2018 were selected. The study outcome was the composite of development of incident CKD, defined as the occurrence of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) <60 mL/minute/1.73 m2 or proteinuria (≥1+ on dipstick test) on 2 consecutive measurements during follow-up, 50% decline in eGFR or onset of end-stage kidney disease (initiation of chronic dialysis), or all-cause mortality. RESULTS: The mean age was 53.4 years and 1030 (60.9%) patients were male. During 8379 person-years of follow-up (median 5.2 years), 60 (3.5%) patients experienced study outcomes. When stratified according to TE-defined fibrotic burden, multivariable Cox models revealed that risk of poorer kidney outcomes was 2.77-fold (95% confidence interval, 1.16-6.63; P < .001) higher in patients with liver stiffness range indicating cirrhosis (≥11.7 kPa), compared to those without significant liver fibrosis (<7.9 kPa). These associations remained significant even after adjusting for vigorous confounders. CONCLUSIONS: Higher fibrotic burden assessed using TE was independently associated with poorer kidney outcomes in patients with HBV-related cirrhosis.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: ABO-incompatible (ABOi) living donor kidney transplantation (LDKT) is considered only for patients who do not have an ABO-compatible (ABOc) LD. Therefore, a clinically practical question is whether to proceed with ABOi LDKT or remain on dialysis while waiting for ABOc deceased donor kidney transplantation (DDKT). However, this issue has not been addressed in Asian countries, where ABOi LDKT programs are more active than DDKT programs. METHODS: A total of 426 patients underwent ABOi-LDKT between 2010 and 2020 at Seoul National University Hospital and Severance Hospital, Korea. We compared outcomes between the ABOi-LDKT and the propensity-matched control groups (waiting-list-only group, n = 1,278; waiting-list-or-ABOc-DDKT group, n = 1,278). RESULTS: The ABOi-LDKT group showed a significantly better patient survival rate than the waiting-list-only group (p = 0.001) and the waiting-list-or-ABOc-DDKT group (p = 0.048). When the ABOi-LDKT group was categorized into a high-titer group (peak anti-ABO titer ≥1:128) and a low-titer group (peak anti-ABO titer ≤1:64), the low-titer group showed better patient survival rates than those of the waiting-list-or-ABOc-DDKT group (p = 0.046) or the waiting-list-only group (p = 0.004). In contrast, the high-titer ABOi-LDKT group showed no significant benefit in patient survival compared to the waiting-list-or-ABOc-DDKT group. Death-censored graft survival in the ABOi-LDKT group was not significantly different from that in the ABOc-DDKT group (p = 0.563). CONCLUSION: The ABOi-LDKT group has better outcomes than the waiting-list-or-ABOc-DDKT group in a country with a long waiting time.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The Living Kidney Donor Profile Index (LKDPI) was developed in the United States to predict graft outcomes based on donor characteristics. However, there are significant differences in donor demographics, access to transplantation, proportion of ABO incompatibility, and posttransplant mortality in Asian countries compared with the United States. METHODS: We evaluated the clinical relevance of the LKDPI score in a Korean kidney transplant cohort by analyzing 1860 patients who underwent kidney transplantation between 2000 and 2019. Patients were divided into three groups according to LKDPI score: <0, 1-19.9, and ≥20. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 119 months, 232 recipients (12.5%) experienced death-censored graft loss, and 98 recipients (5.3%) died. High LKDPI scores were significantly associated with increased risk of death-censored graft loss independent of recipient characteristics (LKDPI 1-19.9: HR 1.389, 95% CI 1.036-1.863; LKDPI ≥20: HR 2.121, 95% CI 1.50-2.998). High LKDPI score was also significantly associated with increased risk of biopsy-proven acute rejection and impaired graft renal function. By contrast, overall patient survival rates were comparable among the LKDPI groups. CONCLUSION: High LKDPI scores were associated with an increased risk of death-censored graft loss, biopsy-proven acute rejection, and impaired graft renal function among a Korean kidney transplant cohort.

RESUMO

Current treatment strategies for autoimmune diseases may not sufficiently control aberrant metabolism in B-cells. To address this concern, we investigated a biguanide derivative, IM156, as a potential regulator for B-cell metabolism in vitro and in vivo on overactive B-cells stimulated by the pro-inflammatory receptor TLR-9 agonist CpG oligodeoxynucleotide, a mimic of viral/bacterial DNA. Using RNA sequencing, we analyzed the B-cell transcriptome expression, identifying the major molecular pathways affected by IM156 in vivo. We also evaluated the anti-inflammatory effects of IM156 in lupus-prone NZB/W F1 mice. CD19+B-cells exhibited higher mitochondrial mass and mitochondrial membrane potential compared to T-cells and were more susceptible to IM156-mediated oxidative phosphorylation inhibition. In vivo, IM156 inhibited mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, cell cycle progression, plasmablast differentiation, and activation marker levels in CpG oligodeoxynucleotide-stimulated mouse spleen B-cells. Interestingly, IM156 treatment significantly increased overall survival, reduced glomerulonephritis and inhibited B-cell activation in the NZB/W F1 mice. Thus, our data indicated that IM156 suppressed the mitochondrial membrane potentials of activated B-cells in mice, contributing to the mitigation of lupus activity. Hence, IM156 may represent a therapeutic alternative for autoimmune disease mediated by B-cell hyperactivity.

RESUMO

Muscle wasting in chronic kidney disease is associated with increased cardiovascular events, morbidity, and mortality. However, whether pretransplantation skeletal muscle mass affects kidney transplantation (KT) outcomes has not been established. We analyzed 623 patients who underwent KT between 2004 and 2019. We measured the cross-sectional area of total skeletal muscle at the third lumbar vertebra level on pretransplantation computed tomography scan. The patients were grouped into low and normal skeletal muscle mass groups based on the sex-specific skeletal muscle mass index lowest quartile. During the entire follow-up period, 45 patients (7.2%) died and 56 patients (9.0%) experienced death-censored graft loss. Pretransplantation low skeletal muscle mass was independently associated with all-cause mortality (adjusted hazard ratio, 2.269; 95% confidence interval, 1.232-4.182). Low muscle mass was also associated with an increased risk of hospital readmission within 1 year after transplantation. Death-censored graft survival rates were comparable between the 2 groups. The low muscle group showed higher creatinine-based estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFRs) than the normal muscle group. Although cystatin C-based eGFRs were measured in only one-third of patients, cystatin C-based eGFRs were comparable between the 2 groups. Pretransplantation low skeletal muscle mass index is associated with an increased risk of mortality and hospital readmission after KT.

RESUMO

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are progressive chronic conditions that share important cardiometabolic risk factors and pathogenic mechanisms. We investigated the association between liver fibrosis measured by transient elastography (TE) and the risk of incident CKD in individuals with NAFLD. METHODS: A total of 5983 participants with NAFLD (defined as controlled attenuation parameter >222 dB/m) but without CKD who underwent TE between March 2012 and August 2018 were selected. The primary outcome was incident CKD, defined as the occurrence of eGFR <60 ml min-1 [1.73 m]-2 or proteinuria (≥1+ on dipstick test) on two consecutive measurements during follow-up. The secondary outcome was a 25% decline in eGFR measured on two consecutive visits. RESULTS: The mean age was 51.8 years and 3756 (62.8%) participants were male. During 17,801 person-years of follow-up (mean follow-up of 3.0 years), 62 participants (1.0%) developed incident CKD. When stratified into TE-defined fibrosis stages (F0-F4), multivariable Cox models revealed that risk of incident CKD was 5.40-fold (95% CI 2.46, 11.84; p < 0.001) higher in the F3/F4 group (≥9.5 kPa) than in the F0 group (<5.5 kPa). During 17,577 person-years of follow-up (mean follow-up of 3.0 years), 201 participants (3.4%) experienced the secondary outcome, for which the F3/F4 group had a 3.22-fold higher risk (95% CI 1.96, 5.28; p < 0.001) than the F0 group. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION: In this large cohort of individuals with NAFLD but without baseline CKD, advanced liver fibrosis measured by TE was significantly associated with a higher risk of incident CKD.

RESUMO

Of the antiviral agents currently available to patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB), entecavir (ETV) and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) are 2 of 3 first-line agents.1-3 Given the well-known renal and bone toxicity associated with TDF,4 major international hepatitis B virus treatment guidelines recommend ETV over TDF in patients with predisposing factors to kidney function decline.1-3 However, as evidenced by recent studies, nephrotoxicity of antiviral agents is still an issue under debate.5-7 Therefore, we investigated the differences in the risk of kidney function decline in patients with treatment-naive CHB who were treated with ETV or TDF.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Entecavir (ETV) and tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) are the preferred agents in patients with predisposing factors for nephrotoxicity, but no studies to date have directly compared the renal safety of the two antiviral agents. Hence, we compared the risk of kidney function decline among patients with treatment-naïve chronic hepatitis B (CHB) treated with ETV or TAF. METHODS: This study included 1988 patients with treatment-naïve CHB who were treated with ETV (n = 1839) or TAF (n = 149) between 2007 and 2020 for ETV and between 2017 and 2020 for TAF. The primary outcome was chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression, defined as an increase in CKD stage by at least one stage for at least three consecutive months. RESULTS: A 1:1 propensity score match yielded 149 patients in each treatment group. The mean estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was 100.6 ml/min/1.73 m2 vs. 101.3 ml/min/1.73 m2 in the ETV and TAF groups respectively. A total of 61 patients developed a progression in CKD stage ≥ 1, of which 47 and 14 patients were from the ETV- and TAF-treated groups respectively (19.9 vs. 5.1 per 1000 person-years; p < .001). The risk of progression in CKD stage ≥1 was significantly higher in patients treated with ETV, even when adjusted for potential confounders (adjusted hazard ratio 4.05; 95% CI 2.14-7.68; p < .001). CONCLUSIONS: ETV was associated with a higher risk of kidney function decline than TAF in patients with treatment-naïve CHB. Therefore, further prospective randomized studies are needed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Although tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) and besifovir dipivoxil maleate (BSV) are potent antiviral agents in the treatment of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) infection, their renal safety profiles have not been previously compared. This study compared the risk of kidney function decline among patients with treatment-naïve CHB treated with TAF or BSV. METHODS: This multicenter, retrospective, longitudinal cohort study included 556 patients with treatment-naïve CHB treated with TAF (n = 366) or BSV (n = 190) between November 2017 and August 2021. The primary outcome was chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression, defined as an increase in CKD stage by at least one stage for at least three consecutive months. RESULTS: 1:1 Propensity score matching yielded 154 patients in each treatment group. The mean estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was 100.4 vs. 100.3 ml/min/1.73 m2 in the TAF and BSV groups respectively. A total of 25 patients developed a progression in CKD stage ≥1, of which 13 and 12 patients were from the TAF and BSV treated groups respectively (3.1 vs. 3.3 per 1000 person-years; p = .751). The unadjusted hazard ratio for risk of progression in CKD stage ≥1 of the BSV group (vs. the TAF group) was 1.13 (95% confidence interval, 0.50-2.58; p = .758). This association persisted even after adjusting for potential confounders. Virological, serological and biochemical responses were also similar between the two treatment groups (all p > .05). CONCLUSIONS: TAF and BSV showed a similar risk of kidney function decline in patients with treatment-naïve CHB. Further prospective randomized studies are warranted for validation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Bisphosphonates are administered to post-transplantation patients with mineral and bone disorders; however, the association between bisphosphonate therapy and long-term renal graft survival remains unclear. METHODS: This nested case-control study investigated the effects of bisphosphonates on long-term graft outcomes after kidney transplantation. We enrolled 3836 kidney transplant recipients treated from April 1979 to June 2016 and matched patients with graft failure to those without (controls). Annual post-transplant bone mineral density assessments were performed and recipients with osteopenia or osteoporosis received bisphosphonate therapy. The associations between bisphosphonate use and long-term graft outcomes and graft survival were analyzed using conditional logistic regression and landmark analyses, respectively. RESULTS: A landmark analysis demonstrated that death-censored graft survival was significantly higher in bisphosphonate users than in non-users in the entire cohort (log-rank test, P < 0.001). In the nested case-control matched cohort, bisphosphonate users had a significantly reduced risk of graft failure than did non-users (odds ratio = 0.38; 95% confidence interval 0.30-0.48). Bisphosphonate use, increased cumulative duration of bisphosphonate use >1 year and increased cumulative bisphosphonate dose above the first quartile were associated with a reduced risk of graft failure, after adjustments. CONCLUSIONS: Bisphosphonates may improve long-term graft survival in kidney transplant recipients.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to clarify the nature and clinical significance of glomerular subepithelial microparticles (SMPs), located between the basal surface of the podocytes and the glomerular basement membrane. Ultrastructural morphology of 79 renal biopsy samples (obtained from 25 native and 54 transplanted kidneys), showing SMPs in the last 3 years, was reevaluated with regard to the podocyte changes and clinical condition of the patients. One hundred and nine SMPs were identified, with 32.9% of the samples having two or more per glomerulus. Overall, they were most frequently located in the open capillary loops (55%). However, in the native kidney samples with mesangial deposits, 64.3% of SMPs were present in the mesangium-bound areas. Each vesicle ranged from 46.9 to 87.1 nm, and vesicles were admixed with curved strands in larger SMPs. Diffuse effacement of the foot processes and condensation of the actin filaments were present in 56.0% and 62.4% of the samples, respectively. SMPs were associated with hematuria, proteinuria of ≥ 1 gm, and immune complex deposition in the patients with native kidneys, whereas they were related to hyperglycemia and elevated serum creatinine levels in the patients with renal allografts. Patients with native and transplanted kidneys most commonly presented with IgA nephropathy and allograft rejection, respectively. Finding SMPs in the renal biopsy samples is not rare and they may act as a footprint of podocyte injury caused by diverse etiologies. Considering their size, podocyte exosomes could be a possible source of SMPs.

RESUMO

A Gram-staining-negative, aerobic, cream-coloured, marine bacterium, with rod-shaped cells, designated strain YJ-S3-2T, was isolated from salt flat sediment of Yongyu-do, Republic of Korea. YJ-S3-2T grew at pH 5.0-9.0 (optimum pH 7.0), 4-45 °C (optimum 30 °C) and with 1-18 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 6 %). The results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that YJ-S3-2T was closely related to Marinobacter segnicrescens SS011B1-4T (97.0 %) followed by, 'Marinobacter nanhaiticus' D15-8W (96.7 %), Marinobacter bryozoorum 50-11T (96.7 %), Marinobacter koreensis DSMZ 179240T T (96.5 %) and Marinobacter bohaiensis T17T (96.5 %). The average nucleotide identity (ANI) and the genome to genome distance calculator (GGDC) estimate values between YJ-S3-2T and related type strains were 73.7-79.8 and 19.9-22.5 %, and also 73.5 and 20.7 % with Marinobacter hydrocarbonoclasticus. YJ-S3-2T was characterized as having Q-9 as the predominant respiratory quinone and the principal fatty acids (>10 %) were C16 : 0 (22.3 %), summed feature 9 (C17 : 1iso ω9c/C16 : 0 10-methyl, 13.8 %) and 3 (C16 : 1ω7c/C16 : 1ω6c, 11.9 %). The polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, two unidentified aminolipids and two unidentified phospholipids. The DNA G+C content of YJ-S3-2T is 60.9 mol%. On the basis of the polyphasic taxonomic evidence presented in this study, YJ-S3-2T should be classified as representing a novel species within the genus Marinobacter, for which name Marinobacter halodurans sp. nov. is proposed, with the type strain YJ-S3-2T (=KACC 19883T=KCTC 62937T=JCM 33109T).

RESUMO

A novel Gram-strain-positive, non-spore-forming bacterial strain, designated GP-T3-3T, was isolated from sediment sampled at a tidal flat in Gopado, Republic of Korea. Cells were aerobic, catalase-negative, oxidase-positive, non-motile cocci that occurred singly, in pairs or in clusters. Strain GP-T3-3T grew at 4-45 °C (optimum, 28-37 °C), at pH 4.0-12.0 (pH 8.0-9.0) and in the presence of 0-15 % (w/v) NaCl (3-5 %). Colonies of strain GP-T3-3T were deep-yellow, circular, smooth and pulvinate. The results of the phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain GP-T3-3T was closely related to Serinicoccus profundi MCCC 1A05965T (99.1 %), Serinicoccus chungangensis CAU 9536T (99.0 %) and Serinicoccus marinus JC1078T (98.0 %). The diagnostic diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan was meso-diaminopimelic acid. The predominant respiratory quinone was MK-8(H4) and the major fatty acids were anteiso-C17 : 0, iso-C16 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. The polar lipid profile consisted of diphosphadidylglycerol, phosphadidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylinositol and two unidentified phospholipids. The DNA G+C content was 72.9 mol%. DNA-DNA relatedness values between strain GP-T3-3T and type strains of the genus Serinicoccus ranged from 28.9 to 50.5 %. On the basis of the phenotypic differences and DNA-DNA relatedness data, the isolate represents a new species of the genus Serinicoccus, for which the name Serinicoccussediminis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is GP-T3-3T (=KCTC 49173T=JCM 32825T=KCCM 43309T=KACC 19850T).

RESUMO

A novel cream-pigmented marine bacterium, designated strain YJ-T1-11T, was isolated from a tidal flat at Yeongjong-do, Republic of Korea. Cells were rod-shaped, non-motile, aerobic, Gram-reaction-negative, oxidase-positive and catalase-positive. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain YJ-T1-11T clustered with Gemmobacter fontiphilus JS43T (98.3 %) within the genus Gemmobacter and its closest neighbours were G.emmobacter aquatilis DSM 3857T (98.5 %), Gemmobacter aquaticus A1-9T (98.4 %), Gemmobacterlanyuensis Orc-4T (98.4 %), Gemmobacterfontiphilus JS43T (98.3 %), Gemmobactercaeni DCA-1T (98.2 %), Gemmobacternanjingensis Y12T (97.5 %) and Gemmobactertilapiae Ruye-53T (97.2 %). Average nucleotide identity values between the genome sequences of strain YJ-T1-11T and the related type strains ranged from 77.08 to 90.48 %. The predominant fatty acid of strain YJ-T1-11T was summed feature 8 (comprising C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c). The major isoprenoid quinone was Q-10 and the DNA G+C content was 65.6 mol%. The polar lipid profile consisted of phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, diphosphatidylglycerol and three unidentified lipids. The DNA-DNA relatedness values between strain YJ-T1-11T and the type strains of the 12 phylogenetically related species of the genus Gemmobacter were 23.6-53.7 %. On the basis of the genotypic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic data, strain YJ-T1-11T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Gemmobacter, for which the name Gemmobacter lutimaris sp. nov. is proposed. RESUMO

Parathyroidectomy (PTX) is the standard treatment for secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT); however, the administration of cinacalcet has gained prominence as a noninvasive treatment. We aimed to determine whether PTX or cinacalcet is more effective in preventing morbidity and mortality through reviewing follow-up data concerning surgical management of SHPT. We retrospectively analyzed and divided 209 patients with SHPT into two treatment groups: PTX (n = 78) and cinacalcet (n = 131) groups. We compared clinical features, the over-the-target range rate during pre- and post-intervention periods, new cardiovascular events, and all-cause mortality between both groups. Almost all biochemical parameters were well controlled in the post-intervention period, and were within the recommended target range for the PTX group but not for the cinacalcet group. A significant difference was observed in the over-the-target range rate during the post-intervention period between the groups. PTX and cinacalcet interventions significantly lowered the over-the-target range rates for serum intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) (>300 pg/mL), corrected calcium (>10.5 mg/mL), serum phosphorus (>5.5 mg/dL), and calcium-phosphorus product (>55) in both groups (p = 0.001). PTX reduced the risk of new cardiovascular events by 86% compared to cinacalcet (p = 0.001); however, all-cause mortality did not differ significantly (14.1% vs. 7.6%, p = 0.132). For patients with SHPT, PTX helps prevent cardiovascular events through normalizing biochemical variables, according to recommended guidelines. PTX should be considered before cinacalcet treatment to prevent new cardiovascular events. Early PTX for appropriate patients can help prevent immediate postoperative complications and mortality.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Despite the obvious survival benefit compared to that among waitlist patients, outcomes of positive crossmatch kidney transplantation (KT) are generally inferior to those of human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-compatible KT. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of positive complement-dependent cytotoxicity (CDC) crossmatch (CDC + FC+) and positive flow cytometric crossmatch (CDC-FC+) with those of HLA-compatible KT (CDC-FC-) after successful desensitization. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 330 eligible patients who underwent KTs between June 2011 and August 2017: CDC-FC- (n = 274), CDC-FC+ (n = 39), and CDC + FC+ (n = 17). Desensitization protocol targeting donor-specific antibody (DSA) involved plasmapheresis, intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), and rituximab with/without bortezomib for positive-crossmatch KT. RESULTS: Death-censored graft survival and patient survival were not different among the three groups. The median estimated glomerular filtration rate was significantly lower in the CDC + FC+ group than in the compatible group at 6 months (P < 0.001) and 2 years (P = 0.020). Biopsy-proven rejection within 1 year of CDC-FC-, CDC-FC+, and CDC + FC+ were 15.3, 28.2, and 47.0%, respectively. Urinary tract infections (P < 0.001), Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (P < 0.001), and cytomegalovirus viremia (P < 0.001) were more frequent in CDC-FC+ and CDC + FC+ than in CDC-FC-. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that similar graft and patient survival was achieved in CDC-FC+ and CDC + FC+ KT compared with CDC-FC- through DSA-targeted desensitization despite the higher incidence of rejection and infection than that in compatible KT.

RESUMO

Intertidal zones are unique environments that are known to be ecological hot spots. In this study, sediments were collected from mudflats and decommissioned salterns on three islands in the Yellow Sea of South Korea. The diversity analysis targeted both isolates and unculturable fungi via Illumina sequencing, and the natural recovery of the abandoned salterns was assessed. The phylogeny and bioactivities of the fungal isolates were investigated. The community analysis showed that the abandoned saltern in Yongyudo has not recovered to a mudflat, while the other salterns have almost recovered. The results suggested that a period of more than 35 years may be required to return abandoned salterns to mudflats via natural restoration. Gigasporales sp. and Umbelopsis sp. were selected as the indicators of mudflats. Among the 53 isolates, 18 appeared to be candidate novel species, and 28 exhibited bioactivity. Phoma sp., Cladosporium sphaerospermum, Penicillium sp. and Pseudeurotium bakeri, and Aspergillus urmiensis showed antioxidant, tyrosinase inhibition, antifungal, and quorum-sensing inhibition activities, respectively, which has not been reported previously. This study provides reliable fungal diversity information for mudflats and abandoned salterns and shows that they are highly valuable for bioprospecting not only for novel microorganisms but also for novel bioactive compounds.

RESUMO

We present a new concept of a structured surface for enhanced boiling heat transfer that is capable of self-adapting to the local thermal conditions. An array of freestanding nanoscale bimorphs, a structure that consists of two adjoining materials with a large thermal expansion mismatch, is able to deform under local temperature change. Such a surface gradually deforms as the nucleate boiling progresses due to the increase in the wall superheat. The deformation caused by the heated surface is shown to be favorable for boiling heat transfer, leading to about 10% of increase in the critical heat flux compared to a regular nanowire surface. A recently developed theoretical model that accounts for the critical instability wavelength of the vapor film and the capillary wicking force successfully describes the critical heat flux enhancement for the nanobimorph surface with a good quantitative agreement.

RESUMO

A novel Gram-strain-positive, non-spore-forming bacterial strain, designated GP-S2-8T, was isolated from a sea-tidal flat sediment sample from Gopado, Republic of Korea. Cells were aerobic, catalase-negative, oxidase-positive, non-motile and cocci, occurring singly, in pairs or in tetrads, and often tending to form aggregates. The strain grew at 4-45 °C (optimum, 28-37 °C), at pH 4.0-11.0 (pH 7.0-9.0) and in the presence of 0-11 % (w/v) NaCl (0-3 %). Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences represented that the isolate belongs to the genus Blastococcus. The diagnostic diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan was meso-diaminopimelic acid. Whole-cell sugar analysis of strain GP-S2-8T revealed rhamnose, glucose and mannose as characteristic sugars. The predominant respiratory quinone was MK-9(H4) and the major fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, iso-C16 : 1 H, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c), iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C14 : 0. The polar lipid profile included diphosphadidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylinositol, one unidentified glycophospholipid, two unidentified phospholipids and five unidentified lipids. The DNA G+C content was 74.2 mol%. DNA-DNA relatedness values between strain GP-S2-8T and type strains of the genus Blastococcus ranged from 14.6 to 48.6 %. On the basis of the phenotypic differences and DNA-DNA relatedness data, the isolate represents a new species of the genus Blastococcus, for which the name Blastococcuslitoris sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is GP-S2-8T (=KCCM 43275T=JCM 32354T=DSM 106127T=KCTC 49078T).

RESUMO

A novel Gram-stain-negative, moderately halophilic and aerobic bacterium, designated strain SDRB-Phe2T, was isolated from coastal sediment of the yellow sea in Sindu-ri, Republic of Korea. Cells were oxidase-positive, catalase-positive, rod-shaped and surrounded by a capsule with gliding motility. Colonies were yellow-coloured, circular, pulvinate with entire margins. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain SDRB-Phe2T formed a distinct lineage within the genus Maribacter of the family Flavobacteriaceae. Stain SDRB-Phe2T exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 97.1-98.9 % to the type strains of Maribacterstanieri, Maribacterspongiicola, Maribacter forsetii, Maribacter dokdonensis, Maribacter aquivivus, Maribactercaenipelagi, Maribacterlitorisediminis, Maribactersedimenticola, Maribacterulvicola, Maribacter confluentis and Maribacter orientalis, and of 94.8-96.7 % to the type strains of the other species of the genus Maribacter. Strain SDRB-Phe2T contained MK-6 as the predominant respiratory quinone and iso-C15 : 1 G, iso-C15 : 0 and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c) as the major fatty acids. The polar lipids of strain SDRB-Phe2T were phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified amino lipid and two unidentified lipids. The DNA G+C content was 36.2 mol%. DNA-DNA relatedness values of strain SDRB-Phe2T to the type strains of the 11 phylogenetically related species of the genus Maribacter were 21.9-38.6 %. On the basis of the phenotypic features, phylogenetic and DNA-DNA hybridization analyses presented here, strain SDRB-Phe2T (=JCM 32373T=KCTC 62273T=DSM 106042T) represents a novel species of the genus Maribacter, for which the name Maribacterlitoralis sp. nov. is proposed.
