Three-dimensional (3D) printing1-9 has revolutionized manufacturing processes for electronics10-12, optics13-15, energy16,17, robotics18, bioengineering19-21 and sensing22. Downscaling 3D printing23 will enable applications that take advantage of the properties of micro- and nanostructures24,25. However, existing techniques for 3D nanoprinting of metals require a polymer-metal mixture, metallic salts or rheological inks, limiting the choice of material and the purity of the resulting structures. Aerosol lithography has previously been used to assemble arrays of high-purity 3D metal nanostructures on a prepatterned substrate26,27, but in limited geometries26-30. Here we introduce a technique for direct 3D printing of arrays of metal nanostructures with flexible geometry and feature sizes down to hundreds of nanometres, using various materials. The printing process occurs in a dry atmosphere, without the need for polymers or inks. Instead, ions and charged aerosol particles are directed onto a dielectric mask containing an array of holes that floats over a biased silicon substrate. The ions accumulate around each hole, generating electrostatic lenses that focus the charged aerosol particles into nanoscale jets. These jets are guided by converged electric-field lines that form under the hole-containing mask, which acts similarly to the nozzle of a conventional 3D printer, enabling 3D printing of aerosol particles onto the silicon substrate. By moving the substrate during printing, we successfully print various 3D structures, including helices, overhanging nanopillars, rings and letters. In addition, to demonstrate the potential applications of our technique, we printed an array of vertical split-ring resonator structures. In combination with other 3D-printing methods, we expect our 3D-nanoprinting technique to enable substantial advances in nanofabrication.

BACKGROUND: Genomic selection (GS) is an efficient breeding strategy to improve quantitative traits. It is necessary to calculate genomic estimated breeding values (GEBVs) for GS. This study investigated the prediction accuracy of GEBVs for five fruit traits including fruit weight, fruit width, fruit height, pericarp thickness, and Brix. Two tomato germplasm collections (TGC1 and TGC2) were used as training populations, consisting of 162 and 191 accessions, respectively. RESULTS: Large phenotypic variations for the fruit traits were found in these collections and the 51K Axiom™ SNP array generated confident 31,142 SNPs. Prediction accuracy was evaluated using different cross-validation methods, GS models, and marker sets in three training populations (TGC1, TGC2, and combined). For cross-validation, LOOCV was effective as k-fold across traits and training populations. The parametric (RR-BLUP, Bayes A, and Bayesian LASSO) and non-parametric (RKHS, SVM, and random forest) models showed different prediction accuracies (0.594-0.870) between traits and training populations. Of these, random forest was the best model for fruit weight (0.780-0.835), fruit width (0.791-0.865), and pericarp thickness (0.643-0.866). The effect of marker density was trait-dependent and reached a plateau for each trait with 768-12,288 SNPs. Two additional sets of 192 and 96 SNPs from GWAS revealed higher prediction accuracies for the fruit traits compared to the 31,142 SNPs and eight subsets. CONCLUSION: Our study explored several factors to increase the prediction accuracy of GEBVs for fruit traits in tomato. The results can facilitate development of advanced GS strategies with cost-effective marker sets for improving fruit traits as well as other traits. Consequently, GS will be successfully applied to accelerate the tomato breeding process for developing elite cultivars.

The novel genus Aquibium that lacks nitrogenase was recently reclassified from the Mesorhizobium genus. The genomes of Aquibium species isolated from water were smaller and had higher GC contents than those of Mesorhizobium species. Six Mesorhizobium species lacking nitrogenase were found to exhibit low similarity in the average nucleotide identity values to the other 24 Mesorhizobium species. Therefore, they were classified as the non-N2-fixing Mesorhizobium lineage (N-ML), an evolutionary intermediate species. The results of our phylogenomic analyses and the loss of Rhizobiales-specific fur/mur indicated that Mesorhizobium species may have evolved from Aquibium species through an ecological transition. Halotolerant and alkali-resistant Aquibium and Mesorhizobium microcysteis belonging to N-ML possessed many tripartite ATP-independent periplasmic transporter and sodium/proton antiporter subunits composed of seven genes (mrpABCDEFG). These genes were not present in the N2-fixing Mesorhizobium lineage (ML), suggesting that genes acquired for adaptation to highly saline and alkaline environments were lost during the evolution of ML as the habitat changed to soil. Land-to-water habitat changes in Aquibium species, close relatives of Mesorhizobium species, could have influenced their genomic evolution by the gain and loss of genes. Our study indicated that lineage-specific evolution could have played a significant role in shaping their genome architecture and conferring their ability to thrive in different habitats.IMPORTANCEPhylogenetic analyses revealed that the Aquibium lineage (AL) and non-N2-fixing Mesorhizobium lineage (N-ML) were monophyletically grouped into distinct clusters separate from the N2-fixing Mesorhizobium lineage (ML). The N-ML, an evolutionary intermediate species having characteristics of both ancestral and descendant species, could provide a genomic snapshot of the genetic changes that occur during adaptation. Genomic analyses of AL, N-ML, and ML revealed that changes in the levels of genes related to transporters, chemotaxis, and nitrogen fixation likely reflect adaptations to different environmental conditions. Our study sheds light on the complex and dynamic nature of the evolution of rhizobia in response to changes in their environment and highlights the crucial role of genomic analysis in understanding these processes.

In previous edge detection schemes based on the spin-orbit interaction of light, the direction and intensity of the edge-enhanced images are influenced by the incident polarization state. In this study, we develop an edge detection strategy that is insensitive to changes in both the incident polarization and the incident angle. The output intensity and transfer function remain entirely impervious to changes in incident polarization, being explicitly formulated as functions of the incident angle, specifically in terms of cot 2⁡θ i and cot⁡θ i , respectively. This behavior is attributed to the opposing nature of the polarization components E~r H-H and E~r V-V in the x-direction after undergoing mapping through the Glan polarizer, while the sum of polarization components E~r H-V and E~r V-H in the y-direction can be simplified to terms independent of incident polarization. Furthermore, we propose a metasurface design to achieve the required optical properties in order to realize the derived edge detection scheme.

BACKGROUND: The discovery of effective treatments for major depressive disorder (MDD) may help target different brain pathways. Invasive vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is an effective neuromodulation technique for the treatment of MDD; however, the effectiveness of the noninvasive technique, transauricular VNS (taVNS), remains unknown. Moreover, a mechanistic understanding of the neural effects behind its biological and therapeutic effects is lacking. This review aimed to evaluate the clinical evidence and the neural and anti-inflammatory effects of taVNS in MDD. METHODS: Two searches were conducted using a systematic search strategy reviewed the clinical efficacy and neural connectivity of taVNS in MDD in humans and evaluated the changes in inflammatory markers after taVNS in humans or animal models of depression. A risk of bias assessment was performed in all human studies. RESULTS: Only 5 studies evaluated the effects of taVNS in patients with depression. Although the studies demonstrated the efficacy of taVNS in treating depression, they used heterogeneous methodologies and limited data, thus preventing the conduct of pooled quantitative analyses. Pooled analysis could not be performed for studies that investigated the modulation of connectivity between brain areas; of the 6 publications, 5 were based on the same experiment. The animal studies that analyzed the presence of inflammatory markers showed a reduction in the level of pro-inflammatory cytokines or receptor expression. CONCLUSIONS: Data on the clinical efficacy of taVNS in the treatment of MDD are limited. Although these studies showed positive results, no conclusions can be drawn regarding this topic considering the heterogeneity of these studies, as in the case of functional connectivity studies. Based on animal studies, the application of taVNS causes a decrease in the level of inflammatory factors in different parts of the brain, which also regulate the immune system. Therefore, further studies are needed to understand the effects of taVNS in patients with MDD.

BACKGROUNDS: Remdesivir (RDV) is an antiviral agent approved for the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19); however, is not recommended for patients with renal impairment. Due to limitations associated with prospective clinical trials, real-world data on the safety and efficacy of RDV in patients with renal impairment are necessary. METHODS: Propensity score-matched (PSM) retrospective analysis was conducted between March 2020 and September 2022 in COVID-19 patients with an eGFR < 30 mL/min in four Korean hospitals. The RDV treatment group was matched to the untreated control group. The safety and clinical outcomes in patients who received RDV were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 564 patients were enrolled; 229 patients received RDV either for treatment or prophylaxis. On day 5, no difference in nephrotoxicity was observed between the two groups, and liver enzyme levels were within the normal range. In multivariate analysis for new dialysis, RDV treatment was not a risk factor for new dialysis. Among the 564 patients, 417 were indicated for a 5-day course of RDV treatment and 211 patients were treated with RDV. After PSM, no differences in the clinical outcomes were observed between the two groups. CONCLUSION: RDV use in COVID-19 patients with renal impairment did not result in significant nephrotoxicity or hepatotoxicity.

Understanding chirality, or handedness, in molecules is important because of the enantioselectivity that is observed in many biochemical reactions 1 , and because of the recent development of chiral metamaterials with exceptional light-manipulating capabilities, such as polarization control2-4, a negative refractive index 5 and chiral sensing 6 . Chiral nanostructures have been produced using nanofabrication techniques such as lithography 7 and molecular self-assembly8-11, but large-scale and simple fabrication methods for three-dimensional chiral structures remain a challenge. In this regard, chirality transfer represents a simpler and more efficient method for controlling chiral morphology12-18. Although a few studies18,19 have described the transfer of molecular chirality into micrometre-sized helical ceramic crystals, this technique has yet to be implemented for metal nanoparticles with sizes of hundreds of nanometres. Here we develop a strategy for synthesizing chiral gold nanoparticles that involves using amino acids and peptides to control the optical activity, handedness and chiral plasmonic resonance of the nanoparticles. The key requirement for achieving such chiral structures is the formation of high-Miller-index surfaces ({hkl}, h ≠ k ≠ l ≠ 0) that are intrinsically chiral, owing to the presence of 'kink' sites20-22 in the nanoparticles during growth. The presence of chiral components at the inorganic surface of the nanoparticles and in the amino acids and peptides results in enantioselective interactions at the interface between these elements; these interactions lead to asymmetric evolution of the nanoparticles and the formation of helicoid morphologies that consist of highly twisted chiral elements. The gold nanoparticles that we grow display strong chiral plasmonic optical activity (a dis-symmetry factor of 0.2), even when dispersed randomly in solution; this observation is supported by theoretical calculations and direct visualizations of macroscopic colour transformations. We anticipate that our strategy will aid in the rational design and fabrication of three-dimensional chiral nanostructures for use in plasmonic metamaterial applications.

Superior antagonistic activity against axenic Microcystis aeruginosa PCC7806 was observed with Paucibacter sp. B51 isolated from cyanobacterial bloom samples among 43 tested freshwater bacterial species. Complete genome sequencing, analyzing average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization, designated the B51 strain as Paucibacter aquatile. Electron and fluorescence microscopic image analyses revealed the presence of the B51 strain in the vicinity of M. aeruginosa cells, which might provoke direct inhibition of the photosynthetic activity of the PCC7806 cells, leading to perturbation of cellular metabolisms and consequent cell death. Our speculation was supported by the findings that growth failure of the PCC7806 cells led to low pH conditions with fewer chlorophylls and down-regulation of photosystem genes (e.g., psbD and psaB) during their 48-h co-culture condition. Interestingly, the concentrated ethyl acetate extracts obtained from B51-grown supernatant exhibited a growth-inhibitory effect on PCC7806. The physical separation of both strains by a filter system led to no inhibitory activity of the B51 cells, suggesting that contact-mediated anti-cyanobacterial compounds might also be responsible for hampering the growth of the PCC7806 cells. Bioinformatic tools identified 12 gene clusters that possibly produce secondary metabolites, including a class II lasso peptide in the B51 genome. Further chemical analysis demonstrated anti-cyanobacterial activity from fractionated samples having a rubrivinodin-like lasso peptide, named paucinodin. Taken together, both contact-mediated inhibition of photosynthesis and the lasso peptide secretion of the B51 strain are responsible for the anti-cyanobacterial activity of P. aquatile B51.

RESUMO

This severe monkeypox case described a 23-year-old male with advanced HIV-1 disease presenting perirectal abscess, extensive anal ulcerative lesions requiring colostomy, and tecovirimat resistance. Radiologically non-liquefied perirectal abscess presented diagnostic challenges highlighting the complexity of aggressive monkeypox manifestations in immunocompromised individuals.

Eco-friendly reagents derived from plants represent a promising strategy to mitigate the occurrence of toxic cyanobacterial blooms. The use of an amentoflavone-containing Selaginella tamariscina extract (STE) markedly decreased the number of Microcystis aeruginosa cells, thus demonstrating significant anti-cyanobacterial activity. In particular, the Microcystis-killing fraction obtained from pulverized S. tamariscina using hot-water-based extraction at temperatures of 40 °C induced cell disruption in both axenic and xenic M. aeruginosa. Liquid chromatographic analysis was also conducted to measure the concentration of amentoflavone in the STE, thus supporting the potential M. aeruginosa-specific killing effects of STE. Bacterial community analysis revealed that STE treatment led to a reduction in the relative abundance of Microcystis species while also increasing the 16S rRNA gene copy number in both xenic M. aeruginosa NIBR18 and cyanobacterial bloom samples isolated from a freshwater environment. Subsequent testing on bacteria, cyanobacteria, and algae isolated from freshwater revealed that STE was not toxic for other taxa. Furthermore, ecotoxicology assessment involving Aliivibrio fischeri, Daphnia magna, and Danio rerio found that high STE doses immobilized D. magna but did not impact the other organisms, while there was no change in the water quality. Overall, due to its effective Microcystis-killing capability and low ecotoxicity, aqueous STE represents a promising practical alternative for the management of Microcystis blooms.

In response to the Mpox domestic epidemic, South Korea initiated a nationwide vaccination program in May 2023, administering a 0.1 mL intradermal dose of JYNNEOS (Modified Vaccinia Ankara vaccine, Bavarian Nordic) to a high-risk group. To investigate the adverse reactions after intradermal JYNNEOS vaccination, an anonymous online survey was conducted at the National Medical Center from May 22 to July 31, 2023. Overall, 142 individuals responded. Over 80% of the respondents reported local reactions of predominantly mild severity. The predominant local reactions were pruritus, redness, and swelling; their incidence rates after the first dose were 66.2%, 48.1%, and 49.4%, respectively; the corresponding rates after the second dose were 69.2%, 60.6%, and 53.8%. Fewer respondents reported systemic symptoms. The most common systemic symptom was fatigue, the incidence rates of which after the first and second doses were 37.7% and 24.6%, respectively. Overall, the intradermally administered JYNNEOS vaccine appeared well tolerated.

We aimed to characterize the genomes of monkeypox virus isolates from the Far East, providing insights into viral transmission and evolution. Genomic analysis was conducted on 8 isolates obtained from patients with monkeypox virus disease in the Republic of Korea between May 2022 and early 2023. These isolates were classified into Clade IIb. Distinct lineages, including B.1.1, A.2.1, and B.1.3, were observed in 2022 and 2023 isolates, with only the B.1.3 lineage detected in six isolates of 2023. These genetic features were specific to Far East isolates (the Republic of Korea, Japan, and Taiwan), distinguishing them from the diverse lineages found in the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Oceania. In early 2023, the prevalence of the B.1.3 lineage of monkeypox virus identified in six patients with no overseas travel history is considered as an indicator of the potential initiation of local transmission in the Republic of Korea.

Apoptosis plays a crucial role in neuronal injury, with substantial evidence implicating Fas-mediated cell death as a key factor in ischemic strokes. To address this, inhibition of Fas-signaling has emerged as a promising strategy in preventing neuronal cell death and alleviating brain ischemia. However, the challenge of overcoming the blood-brain barrier (BBB) hampers the effective delivery of therapeutic drugs to the central nervous system (CNS). In this study, we employed a 30 amino acid-long leptin peptide to facilitate BBB penetration. By conjugating the leptin peptide with a Fas-blocking peptide (FBP) using polyethylene glycol (PEG), we achieved specific accumulation in the Fas-expressing infarction region of the brain following systemic administration. Notably, administration in leptin receptor-deficient db/db mice demonstrated that leptin facilitated the delivery of FBP peptide. We found that the systemic administration of leptin-PEG-FBP effectively inhibited Fas-mediated apoptosis in the ischemic region, resulting in a significant reduction of neuronal cell death, decreased infarct volumes, and accelerated recovery. Importantly, neither leptin nor PEG-FBP influenced apoptotic signaling in brain ischemia. Here, we demonstrate that the systemic delivery of leptin-PEG-FBP presents a promising and viable strategy for treating cerebral ischemic stroke. Our approach not only highlights the therapeutic potential but also emphasizes the importance of overcoming BBB challenges to advance treatments for neurological disorders.

A novel strain YR1T, Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, catalase- and oxidase-positive, and aerobic bacterium, was isolated from the feces of Ceratotherium simum. The strain grew at 9-42 °C (optimal temperature, 30 °C), at pH 6.0-10.0 (optimal pH, 7.0), and in the presence of 0-3% (w/v) NaCl (optimal salinity, 0%). Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing indicated that strain YR1T was most closely related to Rheinheimera soli BD-d46T (98.6%), R. riviphila KYPC3T (98.6%), and R. mangrovi LHK 132T (98.1%). Moreover, the average nucleotide identity, average amino acid identity, and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between strain YR1T and R. mangrovi LHK 132 T were 88.3%, 92.1%, and 35.3%, respectively, indicating that strain YR1T is a novel species in the genus Rheinheimera. The genome size and genomic DNA G + C content of strain YR1T were 4.5 Mbp and 46.37%, respectively. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol, while the predominant respiratory quinone was Q-8. Summed feature 3 (C16:1 ω7c and/or C16:1 ω6c), C16: 0, and summed feature 8 (C18:1 ω7c) were the primary cellular fatty acids (> 16%). Based on these genotypic and phenotypic characteristics, strain YR1T was identified as a novel species in the genus Rheinheimera, for which the name Rheinheimera faecalis sp. nov. is proposed, with the type strain is YR1T (= KACC 22402T = JCM 34823T).

BACKGROUND: Nirmatrelvir-ritonavir is highly effective in preventing severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in high-risk patients with mild-to-moderate severity. However, real-world performance data are limited, and the drug is not so acceptable to the COVID-19 patients at high risk who need it in Korea. METHODS: To evaluate the effectiveness of nirmatrelvir-ritonavir, we conducted a propensity score-matched retrospective cohort study on patients with mild-to-moderate COVID-19 at high risk for a severe disease who were hospitalized at four hospitals in South Korea from February 2022 to April 2022. A total of 236 patients in the treatment group (administered nirmatrelvir-ritonavir) and 236 in the matched control group (supportive care only) were analyzed for the primary outcome, i.e., the time to oxygen support-free survival. The secondary outcome was a composite result of disease progression. The reason for not prescribing nirmatrelvir-ritonavir to the indicated patients was also investigated. RESULTS: The treatment group showed significantly longer oxygen support-free survival than the matched control group (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 0.07; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.01-0.31; P < 0.001). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that age (aHR, 1.03; 95% CI, 1.00-1.07), National Early Warning Score-2 at admission (aHR, 1.36; 95% CI, 1.08-1.71), nirmatrelvir-ritonavir treatment, female sex (aHR, 0.37; 95% CI, 0.15-0.88), and time from symptom onset to admission (aHR, 0.67; 95% CI, 0.48-0.95) were significantly associated with oxygen therapy. However, none of the factors were related to the composite outcome. In the unmatched control group, 19.9% of 376 patients had documented explanations for nirmatrelvir-ritonavir non-prescription, and 44.0% of these were due to contraindication criteria. In the treatment group, 10.9% of patients discontinued the medication primarily because of adverse events (71.4%), with gastrointestinal symptoms being the most common (50.0%). CONCLUSION: Nirmatrelvir-ritonavir treatment significantly reduced oxygen therapy requirements in high-risk patients with COVID-19 during the omicron variant surge in South Korea. Physicians are encouraged to consider the active use of nirmatrelvir-ritonavir and to be watchful for gastrointestinal symptoms during medication.

BACKGROUND: Information on the effectiveness of nirmatrelvir/ritonavir against the omicron is limited. The clinical response and viral kinetics to therapy in the real world need to be evaluated. METHODS: Mild to moderate coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients with risk factors for severe illness were prospectively enrolled as a treatment group with nirmatrelvir/ritonavir therapy versus a control group with supportive care. Serial viral load and culture from the upper respiratory tract were evaluated for seven days, and clinical responses and adverse reactions were evaluated for 28 days. RESULTS: A total of 51 patients were analyzed including 40 in the treatment group and 11 in the control group. Faster symptom resolution during hospitalization (P = 0.048) was observed in the treatment group. Only minor adverse reactions were reported in 27.5% of patients. The viral load on Day 7 was lower in the treatment group (P = 0.002). The viral culture showed a positivity of 67.6% (25/37) vs. 100% (6/6) on Day 1, 0% (0/37) vs. 16.7 (1/6) on Day 5, and 0% (0/16) vs. 50.0% (2/4) on Day 7 in the treatment and control groups, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Nirmatrelvir/ritonavir against the omicron was safe and resulted in negative viral culture conversion after Day 5 of treatment with better symptomatic resolution.

AIMS: To identify the characteristics of device-related pressure injuries (DRPI) in general ward inpatients, and to confirm the DRPI risk factors by examining differences between a DRPI and non-DRPI group. METHODS: This study is a retrospective case-control study. High-risk adult patients for pressure injuries (rated at 16 points or less on the Braden scale) who were admitted to a general ward of a tertiary general hospital in South Korea from January 1 to September 30, 2021 were enrolled in this study. Among them, participants were selected by matching the patients with DRPI (n = 50) to the non-DRPI patient group (n = 100) in a ratio of 1:2. RESULTS: As for risk factors, longer hospitalization periods and the presence of oedema increased DRPI risk. In blood tests, higher glucose levels increased the risk by 1.03 times, and lower albumin levels increased the risk by 0.08 times. Furthermore, the risk of developing DRPI was 7.89 times higher when sedatives were administered. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the DRPI risk factors identified in this study, patients who have oedema, who have long hospital stays, use sedatives and devices, have a low albumin level, and whose blood glucose is not well controlled should be recognized as having a high risk of developing DRPI. In order to prevent the development of DRPI, it is necessary to recognize risk factors at an early stage, increase actively preventive interventions. The results of this study contribute to recognizing the risk of DRPI in patients and evaluating risk factors for DRPI prevention.

The realization of an optical cloak that can hide a target object is no longer fiction, yet distinguishing the optically cloaked surface from our illusion remains an open problem. Here, the detection of a one-dimensional optically cloaked surface is presented by leveraging the spin Hall effect of light, the microscopic and transverse splitting of linearly polarized light at an optical interface into two circular polarizations. We first derive an analytical formula for the spin Hall shift at a planar surface with a linear phase gradient and demonstrate that the spin Hall effect of light at the cloaked surface differs from that at its perceived image. The theoretical description and numerical computation are generalized for a curved surface with a nonlinear phase gradient. Two approaches for examining optically cloaked surfaces are presented, in which the unknown incident angle and phase gradient are successfully reproduced. This work suggests the potential of the spin Hall effect of light in various applications, including anti-counterfeiting and security.

A novel bacterial strain, designated MK52T, was isolated from the phycosphere of Microcystis aeruginosa. Strain MK52T is a Gram-stain-negative, pink-pigmented, rod-shaped, strictly aerobic bacterium. In 16S rRNA phylogenetic analysis, the MK52T strain was most closely related to Rhizorhabdus wittichii RW1T (98.66 %) and Rhizorhabdus histidinilytica UM2T (98.51 %). The genomic DNA G+C content of strain MK52T was calculated to be 65.5 mol%. The average nucleotide identity values of strain MK52T with R. wittichii RW1T and R. histidinilytica UM2T were 80.35 and 80.23 %, respectively, with digital DNA-DNA hybridization values of 23.6 and 22.9 %, respectively, and average amino acid identities of 75.59 and 75.79 %, respectively. The major isoprenoid quinone was Q-10, and the predominant polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and sphingoglycolipid. Fatty acid methyl ether analysis showed that summed feature 8 (C18 : 1 ω7c and/or C18 : 1 ω6c) was the main cellular fatty acid in strain MK52T. Strain MK52T cells grew at 21-34 °C (optimum, 30 °C), pH 5-8 (optimum, pH 7) and with 0-2 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0.5 % NaCl). Rhizorhabdus phycosphaerae sp. nov. is proposed as a new species (=KCTC 72877T=DSM 111424T) based on its genotypic and phenotypic characteristics.

A novel bacterial strain, NIBR3T, was isolated from a Microcystis aeruginosa culture. Strain NIBR3T was characterized as Gram-negative, rod-shaped, catalase- and oxidase-positive, and aerobic. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain NIBR3T was most closely related to Mesorhizobium carbonis B2.3T (=KCTC 52461), Mesorhizobium oceanicum B7T (=KCTC 42783) and Mesorhizobium qingshengii CCBAU 33460T (=HAMBI 3277), at 98.7, 97.2 and 97.2% similarity, respectively. Our phylogenetic analyses revealed that three strains [strain NIBR3T with the previously reported two Mesorhizobium species (M. carbonis B2.3T and M. oceanicum B7T)] formed a distinct cluster from other Mesorhizobium type strains. The average nucleotide identity of strain NIBR3T relative to M. carbonis B2.3T , M. oceanicum B7T, and M. qingshengii CCBAU 33460T was found to be 84.3, 79.4 and 75.8 %, with average amino-acid identities of 85.1, 74.8 and 64.3 %, and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values of 27.6, 22.6 and 20.7 %, respectively. The genome size and genomic DNA G+C content of NIBR3T were 6.1 Mbp and 67.9 mol%, respectively. Growth of strain NIBR3T was observed at 23-45 °C (optimum, 33 °C), at pH 6-11 (optimum, 8) and in the presence of 0-4 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0 %). The major polar lipids in this novel strain were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylmethylethanolamine. The predominant respiratory quinone was Q-10. Summed feature 8 (C18 : 1 ω7c and/or C18 : 1 ω6c) was the most abundant cellular fatty acid in strain NIBR3T. Based on genotypic characteristics using our genomic data, strain NIBR3T was identified as a member of new genus, Aquibium gen. nov., with the two aforementioned stains. The type strain f the novel species, Aquibium microcysteis sp. nov., is NIBR3T (=KACC 22092T=HAMBI 3738T). We also reclassified Mesorhizobium carbonis and M. oceanicum as Aquibium carbonis comb. nov. and A. oceanicum comb. nov., respectively.
