RESUMO

Heat shock transcription factors (Hsfs) play an essential role as transcriptional regulatory proteins against heat stress by controlling the expression of heat-responsive genes. Common bean is a highly thermosensitive crop, and, therefore, its genome sequence information is segregated, characterized here in terms of heat shock transcription factors and its evolutionary significance. In this study, a complete comprehensive set of 29 non-redundant full-length Hsf genes were identified and characterized from Phaseolus vulgaris L. (PvHsf) genome sequence. Detailed gene information such as chromosomal localization, domain position, motif organization, and exon-intron identification were analyzed. All the 29 PvHsf genes were mapped on 8 out of 11 chromosomes, indicating the gene duplication occurred in the common bean genome. Motif analysis and exon-intron structure were conserved in each group, which showed that the cytoplasmic proteins highly influence the conserved structure of PvHsfs and heat-induced response. The HSF genes were grouped into three classes, i.e., A to C and 14 groups, based on structural features and phylogenetic relationships. Only one pair of paralog sequences suggests that it may be derived from the duplication event during evolution. A comparative genomics study indicated the influence of whole-genome duplication and purifying selection on the common bean genome during development. In silico expression analysis showed the active role of class A and B family during abiotic stress conditions and higher expression in floral organs. The qRT-PCR analysis revealed PvHSFA8 as the master regulator and PvHSFB1A and PvHSFB2A induction during heat exposure in French beans.

TiO2, ZnO, and SnO2 metal oxides were synthesized by the sol-gel method and heterojunctions were fabricated by combining TiO2 with either ZnO or SnO2 in a 1:1 ratio using mechanochemical ball milling process. The ball milling process promotes phase transition of TiO2 from anatase to rutile and yields ternary heterojunction of the type TiO2(A)/TiO2(R)/ZnO and TiO2(A)/TiO2(R)/SnO2 (A-anatase and R-rutile). These ternary heterojunctions were characterized by various analytical techniques and its photocatalytic efficiency is evaluated using 4-Chloro Phenol as a model compound under UV and solar light. The enhanced catalytic activity of TiO2(A)/TiO2(R)/ZnO heterojunction is attributed to the formation of Ti3+-Vo defect states which leads to the efficient charge carrier separation. During the ball milling process severe crystal deformation takes place in TiO2 and ZnO lattices by creating crystal lattice distortion which leads to the formation of defects due to valency mismatch between Ti4+ and Zn2+. A mechanistic pathway is proposed for the enhanced photocatalytic activity of the ternary heterojunctions.

The biochemical reduction of nitrite (NO2-) ions to ammonia (NH3) requires six electrons and is catalyzed by the cytochrome c NO2- reductase enzyme. This biological reaction inspired scientists to explore the reduction of nitrogen oxyanions, such as nitrate (NO3-) and NO2- in wastewater, to produce the more valuable NH3 product. It is widely known that copper (Cu)-based nanoparticles (NPs) are selective for the NO3- reduction reaction (NO3-RR), but the NO2-RR has not been well explored. Therefore, we attempted to address the electrocatalytic conversion of NO2- to NH3 using Cu@Cu2O core-shell NPs to simultaneously treat wastewater by removing NO2- and producing valuable NH3. The Cu@Cu2O core-shell NPs were constructed using the pulsed laser ablation of Cu sheet metal in water. The core-shell nanostructure of these particles was confirmed by various characterization techniques. Subsequently, the removal of NO2- and the ammonium (NH4+)-N yield rate were estimated using the Griess and indophenol blue methods, respectively. Impressively, the Cu@Cu2O core-shell NPs exhibited outstanding NO2-RR activity, demonstrating a maximum NO2- removal efficiency of approximately 94% and a high NH4+-N yield rate of approximately 0.03 mmol h-1.cm-2 at -1.6 V vs. a silver/silver chloride reference electrode under optimal conditions. The proposed NO2-RR mechanism revealed that the (111) facet of Cu favors the selective conversion of NO2- to NH3 via a six-electron transfer. This investigation may offer a new insight for the rational design and detailed mechanistic understanding of electrocatalyst architecture for the effective conversion of NO2- to NH4+.

RESUMO

Vascular malformation of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract along with metachronous lesions elsewhere in the body is extremely rare. We report an unusual case of a female child, with a history of venous malformation excision over the right leg presenting with severe iron-deficiency anemia. Although venous malformations of the small bowel are a rare cause of occult GI bleed, in the presence of cutaneous vascular lesions, there should be a high index of suspicion of a vascular malformation, along with the other causes of GI bleed in children.

BACKGROUND: Previous acute studies suggest the Glu298Asp polymorphism (rs1799983) may influence vascular reactivity in response to long-chain n-3 PUFA intake. However, the effects of this genotype on postprandial vascular function after meals rich in SFAs, n-6 PUFAs, and MUFAs are unclear. OBJECTIVES: This study determined the impact of the Glu298Asp polymorphism on changes in vascular function and cardiometabolic risk biomarkers in response to sequential meals of varying fat composition. METHODS: In a randomized, double-blind, crossover, acute study, 32 postmenopausal women (mean ± SD age: 58 ± 5 y; BMI: 25.9 ± 4.1 kg/m2) consumed mixed meals (breakfast: 0 min, 50 g fat; lunch: 330 min, 30 g fat) containing SFAs, n-6 PUFAs, or MUFAs on 3 occasions. Blood samples for cardiometabolic disease risk markers and real-time measures of vascular reactivity [including flow-mediated dilatation (FMD; primary outcome)] were collected/performed before and regularly for 480 min after breakfast. Participants were retrospectively genotyped for the Glu298Asp (rs1799983) polymorphism. Data were analyzed using linear mixed models. RESULTS: For the postprandial %FMD response, a test fat × genotype interaction was observed for the AUC (P = 0.019) but not incremental AUC (IAUC), with the AUC being ∼24% greater after MUFA- than after SFA- and n-6 PUFA-rich meals in the Glu298 homozygotes (P ≤ 0.026). Test fat × genotype interactions were also evident for postprandial insulin (P ≤ 0.005), with the MUFA-rich meals demonstrating significantly higher AUC (12.8%/14.9%), IAUC (14.6%/20.0%), and maximum concentration (20.0%/34.5%) than the SFA- and n-6 PUFA-rich meals, respectively, in Asp298 carriers (P < 0.05). Genotype did not influence other study outcome measures in response to the test fats. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest the Glu298Asp polymorphism may represent a potential determinant of the inter-individual variability in postprandial responsiveness of %FMD and insulin to acute meal fat composition in postmenopausal women. Further studies are required to confirm these observations.This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT02144454.

In this study, 2D/2D/2D heterostructured r-GO/LTH/ZnO/g-C3N4 nanohybrid were synthesized through hydrothermal method. The strong electrostatic interaction between the negatively charged g-C3N4 and r-GO nanosheets with positively charged layered triple hydroxide (LTH) nanosheets are effectively influences the successful formation of heterojunction. The LTH nanosheets are well spread on the g-C3N4 nanosheets combined with r-GO. In particular, the as prepared heterojunction shows a better photocatalytic degradation activity compared to pristine samples and the significant enhancement in the photocatalytic performance is mainly accredited to the large interfacial charge transition of photogenerated charge carriers under the visible light irradiation. Although the 2D/2D/2D heterojunction effectively hinders the charge carrier recombination resulting high photocatalytic activity with good stability. In addition, the r-GO supported LTH/ZnO/g-C3N4 heterojunction shows high photo-stability after sequential experimental runs with no obvious change in the dye degradation process. Consequently, the role of active species was investigated over the r-GO/LTH/ZnO/g-C3N4 heterojunction with the help of different scavengers.

In this research, efficient and novel catalysts based on hierarchical carbon nanohorns-titanium nanoflowers have been prepared by one-pot solvothermal process. Hydrogen generation from dye-contaminated water and dye degradation along with electrochemical supercapacitance performance have been investigated using the synthesized hierarchical catalyst to produce 4500 µmol g-1 h-1 of hydrogen from the photocatalytically generated aqueous methylene blue and methyl orange dyes, which were degraded up to 90% under natural solar light irradiation. These results offer a new path to generate hydrogen from the aqueous dyes. The catalysts electrode showed 164.6 F g-1 supercapacitance at 5 mV s-1 scan rate, which is nearly 1.3 and 1.65-times higher than that of pristine titanium nanoflower and carbon nanohorns electrodes, respectively. Such superior results were achieved due to good crystallinity, improved optical absorption strength, strong chemical composition between the two components, and hierarchical morphology as demonstrated from XRD, UV-DRS, TEM, XPS, and Raman spectral characterizations.

Silver nanoparticles doped with FCNT-TiO2 heterogeneous catalyst was prepared via one-step chemical reduction process and their efficacy was tested for hydrogen production under solar simulator. Crystallinity, purity, optical properties, and morphologies of the catalysts were examined by X-Ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, UV-Visible diffuse reflectance spectra, and Transmission Electron Microscopy. The chemical states and interface interactions were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The optimized catalyst showed 19.2 mmol g-1 h-1 of hydrogen production, which is 28.5 and 7 times higher than the pristine TiO2 nanoparticles and FCNT-TiO2 nanocomposite, respectively. The optimized catalyst showed stability up to 50 h under the solar simulator irradiation. The natural solar light irradiated catalyst showed ~2.2 times higher hydrogen production rate than the solar simulator irradiation. A plausible reaction mechanism of Ag NPs/FCNT-TiO2 photocatalyst was elucidated by investigating the beneficial co-catalytic role of Ag NPs and FCNTs for enhanced hydrogen production.

RESUMO

Melanoma is a malignant neoplasm of the epidermal melanocytes. Awareness and early recognition of pigmented lesion inside oral cavity helps in initial diagnosis and further investigation and treatment. Oral malignant melanoma is a rare aggressive neoplasm commonly seen among middle age. The diagnosis of melanoma initiates from the pre-existing pigmented lesions. The poor prognosis of oral melanomas requires that pigmented lesions of undetermined origin be routinely biopsied. A case of malignant melanoma of hard palate with its clinical, radiological and histopathological presentation along with brief review is presented. Prognosis of these lesion is poor with survival rate of 5 years.

The need for clean and eco-friendly energy sources has increased enormously over the years due to adverse impacts caused by the detrimental fossil fuel energy sources on the environment. This work reports the safest and most efficient route for hydrogen generation using solar light receptive functionalized carbon nanotubes-titania quantum dots (FCNT-TQDs) as photocatalysts under the influence of solar light irradiation. Predominantly, dual capability of CNT as co-catalyst and photo-sensitizer reduced the recombination rate of charge carriers, and facilitated the efficient light harvesting. The bulk production of hydrogen via water harvesting is considered, wherein photocatalyst synthesized was tuned by the optimum addition of copper to achieve higher production rate of hydrogen up to 54.4 mmol h-1g-1, nearly 25-folds higher than that of pristine TiO2 quantum dots. Addition of copper has a crucial role in improving the rate of hydrogen generation. The ternary composite exhibited 5.4-times higher hydrogen production compared to FCNT-TQDs composite.

Nano-size photocatalysts exhibit multifunctional properties that opened the door for improved efficiency in energy, environment, and health care applications. Among the diversity of catalyst Quantum dots are a class of nanomaterials having a particle size between 2 and 10 nm, showing unique optoelectrical properties that are limited to some of the metal, metal oxide, metal chalcogenides, and carbon-based nanostructures. These unique characteristics arise from either pristine or binary/ternary composites where noble metal/metal oxide/metal chalcogenide/carbon quantum dots are anchored on the surface of semiconductor photocatalyst. It emphasized that properties, as well as performance of photocatalytic materials, are greatly influenced by the choice of synthesis methods and experimental conditions. Among the chemical methods, photo-deposition, precipitation, and chemical reduction, are the three most influential synthesis approaches. Further, two types of quantum dots namely metal based and carbon-based materials have been highlighted. Based on the optical, electrical and surface properties, quantum dots based photocatalysts have been divided into three categories namely (a) photocatalyst (b) co-catalyst and (c) photo-sensitizer. They showed enhanced photocatalytic performance for hydrogen production under visible/UV-visible light irradiation. Often, pristine metal chalcogenides as well as metal/metal oxide/carbon quantum dots attached to a semiconductor particle exhibit enhanced the photocatalytic activity for hydrogen production through absorption of visible light. Alternatively, noble metal quantum dots, which provide plenty of defects/active sites facilitate continuous hydrogen production. For instance, production of hydrogen in the presence of sacrificial agents using metal chalcogenides, metal oxides, and coinage metals based catalysts such as CdS/MoS2 (99,000 µmol h-1g-1) TiO2-Ni(OH)2 (47,195 µmol h-1g-1) and Cu/Ag-TiO2 nanotubes (56,167 µmol h-1g-1) have been reported. Among the carbon-based nanostructures, graphitic C3N4 and carbon quantum dots composites displayed enhanced hydrogen gas (116.1 µmol h-1) production via overall water splitting. This review accounts recent findings on various chemical approaches used for quantum dots synthesis and their improved materials properties leading to enhanced hydrogen production particularly under visible light irradiation. Finally, the avenue to improve quantum efficiency further is proposed.

Background: Elevated postprandial triacylglycerol concentrations, impaired vascular function, and hypertension are important independent cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors in women. However, the effects of meal fat composition on postprandial lipemia and vascular function in postmenopausal women are unknown. Objective: This study investigated the impact of sequential meals rich in saturated fatty acids (SFAs), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), or n-6 (ω-6) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on postprandial flow-mediated dilatation (FMD; primary outcome measure), vascular function, and associated CVD risk biomarkers (secondary outcomes) in postmenopausal women. Methods: A double-blind, randomized, crossover, postprandial study was conducted in 32 postmenopausal women [mean ± SEM ages: 58 ± 1 y; mean ± SEM body mass index (in kg/m2): 25.9 ± 0.7]. After fasting overnight, participants consumed high-fat meals at breakfast (0 min; 50 g fat, containing 33-36 g SFAs, MUFAs, or n-6 PUFAs) and lunch (330 min; 30 g fat, containing 19-20 g SFAs, MUFAs, or n-6 PUFAs), on separate occasions. Blood samples were collected before breakfast and regularly after the meals for 480 min, with specific time points selected for measuring vascular function and blood pressure. Results: Postprandial FMD, laser Doppler imaging, and digital volume pulse responses were not different after consuming the test fats. The incremental area under the curve (iAUC) for diastolic blood pressure was lower after the MUFA-rich meals than after the SFA-rich meals (mean ± SEM: -2.3 ± 0.3 compared with -1.5 ± 0.3 mm Hg × 450 min × 103; P = 0.009), with a similar trend for systolic blood pressure (P = 0.012). This corresponded to a lower iAUC for the plasma nitrite response after the SFA-rich meals than after the MUFA-rich meals (-1.23 ± 0.7 compared with -0.17 ± 0.4 µmol/L × 420 min P = 0.010). The soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (sICAM-1) time-course profile, AUC, and iAUC were lower after the n-6 PUFA-rich meals than after the SFA- and MUFA-rich meals (P ≤ 0.001). Lipids, glucose, and markers of insulin sensitivity did not differ between the test fats. Conclusion: Our study showed a differential impact of meal fat composition on blood pressure, plasma nitrite, and sICAM-1, but no effect on postprandial FMD or lipemia in postmenopausal women. BACKGROUND: Systemic inflammation may play a role in the development of idiopathic fatigue, that is, fatigue not explained by infections or diagnosed chronic illness, but this relationship has never been investigated in community studies including the entire adult age span. We examine the association of the inflammatory marker C-reactive protein (CRP) and fatigue assessed annually in a 3-year outcome period for UK adults aged 16-98. METHODS: Multilevel models were used to track fatigue 7, 19, and 31 months after CRP measurement, in 10 606 UK individuals. Models accounted for baseline fatigue, demographics, health conditions diagnosed at baseline and during follow-up, adiposity, and psychological distress. Sensitivity analyses considered factors including smoking, sub-clinical disease (blood pressure, anaemia, glycated haemoglobin), medications, ethnicity, and alcohol consumption. RESULTS: Fatigue and CRP increased with age, and women had higher values than men. CRP was associated with future self-reported fatigue, but only for the oldest participants. Thus, in those aged 61-98 years, high CRP (>3 mg/L) independently predicted greater fatigue 7, 19, and 31 months after CRP measurement [odds ratio for new-onset fatigue after 7 months: 1.88, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.21-2.92; 19 months: 2.25, CI 1.46-3.49; 31 months: 1.65, CI 1.07-2.54]. No significant longitudinal associations were seen for younger participants. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings support previously described CRP-fatigue associations in older individuals. However, there are clear age modifications in these associations, which may reflect a contribution of unmeasured sub-clinical disease of limited relevance to younger individuals. Further work is necessary to clarify intervening processes linking CRP and fatigue in older individuals.

CVD are the leading cause of death in women globally, with ageing associated with progressive endothelial dysfunction and increased CVD risk. Natural menopause is characterised by raised non-fasting TAG concentrations and impairment of vascular function compared with premenopausal women. However, the mechanisms underlying the increased CVD risk after women have transitioned through the menopause are unclear. Dietary fat is an important modifiable risk factor relating to both postprandial lipaemia and vascular reactivity. Meals rich in SFA and MUFA are often associated with greater postprandial TAG responses compared with those containing n-6 PUFA, but studies comparing their effects on vascular function during the postprandial phase are limited, particularly in postmenopausal women. The present review aimed to evaluate the acute effects of test meals rich in SFA, MUFA and n-6 PUFA on postprandial lipaemia, vascular reactivity and other CVD risk factors in postmenopausal women. The systematic search of the literature identified 778 publications. The impact of fat-rich meals on postprandial lipaemia was reported in seven relevant studies, of which meal fat composition was compared in one study described in three papers. An additional study determined the impact of a high-fat meal on vascular reactivity. Although moderately consistent evidence suggests detrimental effects of high-fat meals on postprandial lipaemia in postmenopausal (than premenopausal) women, there is insufficient evidence to establish the impact of meals of differing fat composition. Furthermore, there is no robust evidence to conclude the effect of meal fatty acids on vascular function or blood pressure. In conclusion, there is an urgent requirement for suitably powered robust randomised controlled trials to investigate the impact of meal fat composition on postprandial novel and established CVD risk markers in postmenopausal women, an understudied population at increased cardiometabolic risk.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Combining work and family responsibilities has previously been associated with improved health in mid-life, yet little is known about how these associations change over time (both biographical and historical) and whether this extends to body mass index (BMI) trajectories for British men and women. The purpose of this study was to investigate relationships between work-family life courses and BMI trajectories across adulthood (16-42 years) for men and women in three British birth cohorts. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Multiply imputed data from three nationally representative British birth cohorts were used-the MRC National Survey of Health and Development (NSHD; 1946 birth cohort, n=3012), the National Child Development Study (NCDS; 1958 birth cohort, n=9614) and the British Cohort Study (BCS; 1970 birth cohort, n=8140). A typology of work-family life course types was developed using multi-channel sequence analysis, linking annual information on work, partnerships and parenthood from 16 to 42 years. Work-family life courses were related to BMI trajectories using multi-level growth models. Analyses adjusted for indicators of prior health, birthweight, child BMI, educational attainment and socioeconomic position across the life course, and were stratified by gender and cohort. RESULTS: Work-family life courses characterised by earlier transitions to parenthood and weaker long-term links to employment were associated with greater increases in BMI across adulthood. Some of these differences, particularly for work-family groups, which are becoming increasingly non-normative, became more pronounced across cohorts (for example, increases in BMI between 16 and 42 years in long-term homemaking women: NSHD: 4.35 kg m-2, 95% confidence interval (CI): 3.44, 5.26; NCDS: 5.53 kg m-2, 95% CI: 5.18, 5.88; BCS: 6.69 kg m-2, 95% CI: 6.36, 7.02). CONCLUSIONS: Becoming a parent earlier and weaker long-term ties to employment are associated with greater increases in BMI across adulthood in British men and women.

INTRODUCTION: Odontogenic cysts and tumors have variable recurrence rates. Recurrence rate is mainly due to the activity of the epithelium. The epithelium of these lesions has been investigated extensively in regard to their role in proliferative and aggressive behavior of the lesions. However, the role of the connective tissue wall in their behavior has not been studied as extensively. Collagen is an essential part of the connective tissue as a whole and fibrous wall of cystic lesions especially. It is demonstrated by picrosirius red dye staining combined with polarization microscopy. This method permits the evaluation of the nature of the collagen fibers in addition to their thickness. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 56 histopathologically diagnosed cases comprising odontogenic follicle, dentigerous cyst, unicystic ameloblastoma, keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT), multicystic/solid ameloblastoma, and ameloblastic carcinoma were taken and stained using picrosirius red stain and evaluated using a polarizing microscope. RESULTS: Collagen fibers in odontogenic follicles and dentiger-ous cysts showed predominant orange-red birefringence; fibers in unicystic ameloblastoma and KCOT showed both orange red and greenish-yellow birefringence; and fibers of multicystic/ solid ameloblastoma showed predominant greenish-yellow birefringence and ameloblastic carcinoma that showed almost complete greenish birefringence. As the biological behavior of the lesions in the spectrum studied progress toward aggressive nature, increase in immature collagen fibers is noticed. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that the nature of collagen fibers plays a pivotal role in predicting the biological behavior of odontogenic lesions. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Aggressive nature of the odontogenic lesions is determined by both the epithelium and the connective tissue components (collagen). Studying the nature and type of collagen helps in predicting its biological behavior.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder and subthreshold depression have been associated with premature mortality. We investigated the association between depressive symptoms and mortality across the full continuum of severity. METHOD: We used Cox proportional hazards models to examine the association between depressive symptom severity, assessed using the eight-item Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D; range 0-8), and the risk of all-cause mortality over a 9-year follow-up, in 11 104 members of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. RESULTS: During follow-up, one fifth of study members died (N = 2267). Depressive symptoms were associated with increased mortality across the full range of severity (p trend < 0.001). Relative to study members with no symptoms, an increased risk of mortality was found in people with depressive symptoms of a low [hazard ratio (HR) for a score of 2 was 1.59, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.40-1.82], moderate (score of 4: HR 1.80, 95% CI 1.52-2.13) and high (score of 8: HR 2.27, 95% CI 1.69-3.04) severity, suggesting risk emerges at low levels but plateaus thereafter. A third of participants (36.4%, 95% CI 35.5-37.3) reported depressive symptoms associated with an increased mortality risk. Adjustment for physical activity, physical illnesses, and impairments in physical and cognitive functioning attenuated this association (p trend = 0.25). CONCLUSIONS: Depressive symptoms are associated with an increased mortality risk even at low levels of symptom severity. This association is explained by physical activity, physical illnesses, and impairments in physical and cognitive functioning.

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to assess nutritional status, dietary diversity and lifestyle risk factors associated with undernutrition in an institutionalised Sri Lankan elderly population. DESIGN: The study was of cross-sectional design followed by a stratified sampling method. SETTING: Twelve homes for the elderly recruited from six provinces in Sri Lanka. SUBJECTS: A total of 311 institutionalised elderly aged ≥60 years. RESULTS: The mean age of the study population was 75 (sd 8) years. Prevalence of undernutrition was 30 %. Mean food variety score, dietary diversity score and dietary serving score of the study population were 8·7 (sd 1·5), 7·3 (sd 1·2) and 10·9 (sd 2·0), respectively. Mean daily intakes of fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, eggs and pulses and dairy portions were below the national recommendations, whereas the mean consumption of sugar exceeded the national recommendation. Only the mean intake of starch was within the recommendation. Food allergies (OR=8·0; 95 % CI 3·9, 16·2), skipping meals (OR=3·8; 95 % CI 2·0, 7·5) and lack of leisure activities (OR=3·1; 95 % CI 1·5, 6·7) significantly increased the risk of undernutrition, whereas the use of dentures decreased the risk (OR=0·20; 95 % CI 0·06, 0·69). CONCLUSIONS: High prevalence of undernutrition and low dietary diversity were observed in an institutionalised elderly Sri Lankan population. Therefore, there is an urgent need to implement nutrition interventions as part of geriatric care to reduce undernutrition and improve the diets of the institutionalised elderly population in Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: Global prevalence of adolescent obesity is rising at an alarming rate leading to increase risk of adult obesity. Obesity in adolescence is postulated to have a significant impact on both physical and psychological health of an individual. The study aim was to identify nutritional and behavioral risk factors associated with obesity among adolescent Sri Lankan school girls. METHODS: In this case-control study, age and ethnicity matched 100 cases (BMI-for-age above +2SD) and 100 controls (BMI-for-age between -2SD to +1 SD) adolescent girls between 14 to 18 years of age were recruited. Predicted risk factors of obesity were assessed through an interviewer administrated questionnaire. A three day diet diary and long version of international physical activity questionnaire were used to assess daily energy intake and energy expenditure from physical activity, respectively. The significant differences in mean values were evaluated using paired t-test. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the risk factors associated with obesity. RESULTS: Obese girls had significantly higher BMI (31.3, 20.2 kgm-2 p < 0.0001), waist circumference (90.8, 68.2 cm p < 0.0001), energy intake (2235.4, 1921.7 kcal p < 0.0001) and lower energy expenditure from physical activity (894.6, 1844.3 MET (metabolic equivalent)-min/week p < 0.0001). High family income (Odds ratio [OR], 2.99, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.13-7.88), first born in family (2.73, 1.25-5.97), skipping breakfast (3.99, 1.81-8.80), consumption of fruits < 4 days per week (2.18, 1.02-4.67), screen viewing > 2 hours/ day (2.96, 1.33-6.61), energy intake (3.97, 3.19-16.36), significantly increased the risk of obesity, whereas increased physical activity (4.34, 1.33-14.14) decreased the risk. Irregular menstruation (4.34, 1.33-14.14) was noted among the obese. CONCLUSION: Socioeconomic and behavior factors are major determinants of adolescent obesity in Sri Lanka. There is an urgent need to implement awareness as well as behavior modification programmes targeting adolescents, parents and schools to control childhood and adolescent obesity.
