OBJECTIVE: The goal of this pilot study was to evaluate the number of head acceleration events (HAEs) based on position, play type, and starting stance. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: Postcollegiate skill development camp during practice sessions and 1 exhibition game. PARTICIPANTS: Seventy-eight male adult North American football athletes. INDEPENDENT VARIABLES: A position was assigned to each participant, and plays in the exhibition game were separated by play type for analysis. During the exhibition game, video data were used to determine the effects of the starting position ("up" in a 2-point stance or "down" in a 3- or 4-point stance) on the HAEs experienced by players on the offensive line. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Peak linear acceleration and number of HAEs greater than 20 g (g = 9.81 m/s2) were measured using an xPatch (X2 Biosystems, Seattle, WA). RESULTS: Four hundred thirty-seven HAEs were recorded during practices and 272 recorded during the exhibition game; 98 and 52 HAEs, the greatest number of HAEs by position in the game, were experienced by the offensive and defensive linemen, respectively. Linebackers and tight ends experienced high percentages of HAEs above 60 g. Offensive line players in a down stance had a higher likelihood of sustaining a HAE than players in an up stance regardless of the type of play (run vs pass). CONCLUSIONS: Changing the stance of players on the offensive line and reducing the number of full-contact practices will lower HAEs.

Design of helmets used in contact sports has been driven by the necessity of preventing severe head injuries. Manufacturing standards and pass or fail grading systems ensure protective headgear built to withstand large impacts, but design standards do no account for impacts resulting in subconcussive episodes and the effects of cumulative impacts on its user. Thus, it is important to explore new design parameters, such as the frequency-domain measures of transmissibility and mechanical impedance that are based on energy absorption from a range of impact loads. Within the experimentally determined frequency range of interest (FROI), transmissibilities above unity were found in the 0-40 Hz range with the magnitude characteristics varying considerably with impact location. A similar variability with location was observed for the mechanical impedance, which ranged from 9 N/m to 50 N/m. Additional research is required to further understand how changes in the components or materials of the components will affect the performance of helmets, and how they may be used to reduce both transmissibility and dynamic impedance.

J Strength Cond Res 34(12): 3546-3553, 2020-Previous studies have shown that there are some changes in our perception of time during exercise, but the relationship between intensity level and these perceptions is unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the effect of exercise intensity on prospective time estimations. Twenty-two trained runners (10 male, 12 female; age 25 ± 6 years) participated in three 30-minute treadmill runs that were perceptually regulated at rating of perceived exertion (RPE) levels of 13 ("somewhat hard"), 15 ("hard"), and 17 ("very hard"). Prospective time assessments, in which subjects estimated durations of 1, 3, 7, and 20 seconds, were obtained immediately before exercise, during (at 10 and 20 minutes), and after exercise. A 3 (RPE) × 4 (timepoint) × 4 (estimated duration) repeated-measures analysis of variance was completed. There was a significant main effect of RPE level (p = 0.013). Post hoc tests revealed that time estimations at RPE17 were significantly lower than those at RPE13 (p = 0.021). The main effects of timepoint and estimated duration were not significant (both p ≥ 0.05), and no interactions were present. However, there was a trend for time estimations to decrease in all conditions as exercise progressed, with a rebound after cessation of exercise. This study showed a clear effect of exercise intensity on time perception. Specifically, the subjects perceived time to pass by more slowly as intensity increased.

Indian rhesus macaque major histocompatibility complex (MHC) variation can influence the outcomes of transplantation and infectious disease studies. Frequently, rhesus macaques are MHC genotyped to identify variants that could account for unexpected results. Since the MHC is only one region in the genome where variation could impact experimental outcomes, strategies for simultaneously profiling variation in the macaque MHC and the remainder of the protein coding genome would be useful. Here we determine MHC class I and class II genotypes using target-capture probes enriched for MHC sequences, a method we term macaque exome sequence (MES) genotyping. For a cohort of 27 Indian rhesus macaques, we describe two methods for obtaining MHC genotypes from MES data and demonstrate that the MHC class I and class II genotyping results obtained with these methods are 98.1% and 98.7% concordant, respectively, with expected MHC genotypes. In contrast, conventional MHC genotyping results obtained by deep sequencing of short multiplex PCR amplicons were only 92.6% concordant with expectations for this cohort.

Despite colonizing nearly every plant on Earth, foliar fungal symbionts have received little attention in studies on the biogeography of host-associated microbes. Evidence from regional scale studies suggests that foliar fungal symbiont distributions are influenced both by plant hosts and environmental variation in climate and soil resources. However, previous surveys have focused on either one plant host across an environmental gradient or one gradient and multiple plant hosts, making it difficult to disentangle the influence of host identity from the influence of the environment on foliar endophyte communities. We used a culture-based approach to survey fungal symbiont composition in the leaves of nine C3 grass species along replicated elevation gradients in grasslands of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. In these ecosystems, the taxonomic richness and composition of foliar fungal symbionts were mostly structured by the taxonomic identity of the plant host rather than by variation in climate. Plant traits related to size (height and leaf length) were the best predictors of foliar fungal symbiont composition and diversity, and composition did not vary predictably with plant evolutionary history. The largest plants had the most diverse and distinctive fungal communities. These results suggest that across the ~ 300 m elevation range that we sampled, foliar fungal symbionts may indirectly experience climate change by tracking the shifting distributions of plant hosts rather than tracking climate directly.

The reduction of nitrate (NO3-) to nitrite (NO2-) is of significant biological and environmental importance. While MoIV(O) and MoVI(O)2 complexes that mimic the active site structure of nitrate reducing enzymes are prevalent, few of these model complexes can reduce nitrate to nitrite through oxygen atom transfer (OAT) chemistry. We present a novel strategy to induce nitrate reduction chemistry of a previously known catalyst MoIV(O)(SN)2 (2), where SN = bis(4- tert-butylphenyl)-2-pyridylmethanethiolate, that is otherwise incapable of achieving OAT with nitrate. Addition of nitrate with the Lewis acid Sc(OTf)3 (OTf = trifluoromethanesulfonate) to 2 results in an immediate and clean conversion of 2 to MoVI(O)2(SN)2 (1). The Lewis acid additive further reacts with the OAT product, nitrite, to form N2O and O2. This work highlights the ability of Sc3+ additives to expand the reactivity scope of an existing MoIV(O) complex together with which Sc3+ can convert nitrate to stable gaseous molecules.

PURPOSE: Self-paced [Formula: see text] tests (SPVs) have shown to produce maximal oxygen consumption values similar to those from traditional protocols. These tests involve perceptually regulated stages in which subjects are asked to maintain rating of perceived exertion values of 11, 13, 15, 17 and 20 for 2 min each. What is not clear is how the last stage should be paced. The purpose of this study was to compare two different pacing strategies during the final stage. METHODS: Fourteen healthy, recreationally active individuals (11 men, 3 women) participated in a familiarization and two experimental laboratory visits. For both lab visits, a treadmill-based SPV was performed. In one of these SPVs, an aggressive pacing strategy was used; in the other, a conservative strategy was implemented. [Formula: see text], HR, [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and RER were recorded and compared between conditions. RESULTS: There were no differences in [Formula: see text] between the conditions [aggressive 58.8 ± 8.8 ml kg-1 min-1 (mean ± SD), conservative 58.3 ± 7.9 ml kg-1 min-1; p = 0.548]. There were also no differences in HR, [Formula: see text], or [Formula: see text] between the pacing strategies. There was a significantly higher RER found in the aggressive (1.25 ± 0.09) compared to the conservative (1.18 ± 0.07) strategy (p = 0.040). CONCLUSIONS: The pacing strategy that is implemented in the last 2 min of an SPV on a treadmill does not affect the maximal oxygen consumption that is elicited during that test. Either pacing strategy can be used for this protocol without compromising the results, when [Formula: see text] is the variable of interest.

A mixed-valent Cu(I)Cu(II) complex, [CuI,II2(UN-O-)]2+ (1), reacts with NO(g) at -80 °C to form [CuI,II2(UN-O-)(NO)]2+ (2), best described as a mixed-valent nitrosyl complex that has a ν(N-O) band at 1670 cm-1 in its infrared (IR) spectrum. Complex 2 undertakes a one-electron oxidation via the addition of O2(g) to generate a new intermediate, best described as a superoxide and nitrosyl adduct, [CuII2(UN-O-)(NO)(O2-)]2+ (3), based on its distinctively blue-shifted ν(N-O) band at 1853 cm-1. Over the course of 20 min at -80 °C, 3 is converted to the peroxynitrite (PN) complex [CuII2(UN-O-)(-OON═O)]2+ (4), which was characterized by low-temperature electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and IR spectroscopy; ν(N-O) absorptions at 1520 and 1640 cm-1 have been assigned as cis- and trans-conformers of the PN ligand in 4. Alternatively, the superoxide complex [CuII2(UN-O-)(O2•-)]2+ (5) is found to react with NO(g) to generate the same intermediate superoxide and nitrosyl adduct 3 (based on IR criteria), which likewise converts to the same PN complex 4. The O-O bond in 4 undergoes heterolysis in dichloromethane solvent and is postulated to produce nitronium ion, leading to ortho-nitration of 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol (DTBP). However, in 2-methyltetrahydrofuran as solvent, the O-O bond undergoes homolysis to generate •NO2 (detected spectrophotometrically) and a putative higher-valent complex, [CuII,III2(UN-O-)(O2-)]2+, that abstracts a H-atom from DTBP to give [CuII2(UN-O-)(OH)]2+ and a phenoxyl radical. The latter may dimerize to form the bis-phenol observed experimentally or couple with the •NO2 present, leading to o-phenol nitration.

Gas-to-particle partitioning of organic aerosols (OA) is represented in most models by Raoult's law, and depends on the existing mass of particles into which organic gases can dissolve. This raises the possibility of non-linear response of particle-phase OA mass to the emissions of precursor volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that contribute to this partitioning mass. Implications for air quality management are evident: a strong non-linear dependence would suggest that reductions in VOC emission would have a more-than-proportionate benefit in lowering ambient OA concentrations. Chamber measurements on simple VOC mixtures generally confirm the non-linear scaling between OA and VOCs, usually stated as a mass-dependence of the measured OA yields. However, for realistic ambient conditions including urban settings, no single component dominates the composition of the organic particles, and deviations from linearity are presumed to be small. Here we re-examine the linearity question using volatility spectra from several sources: (1) chamber studies of selected aerosols, (2) volatility inferred for aerosols sampled in two megacities, Mexico City and Paris, and (3) an explicit chemistry model (GECKO-A). These few available volatility distributions suggest that urban OA may be only slightly super-linear, with most values of the normalized sensitivity exponent in the range 1.1-1.3, also substantially lower than seen in chambers for some specific aerosols. The rather low exponents suggest that OA concentrations in megacities are not an inevitable convergence of non-linear effects, but can be addressed (much like in smaller urban areas) by proportionate reductions in emissions.

BACKGROUND: Vegetation change in high latitude tundra ecosystems is expected to accelerate due to increased wildfire activity. High-severity fires increase the availability of mineral soil seedbeds, which facilitates recruitment, yet fire also alters soil microbial composition, which could significantly impact seedling establishment. RESULTS: We investigated the effects of fire severity on soil biota and associated effects on plant performance for two plant species predicted to expand into Arctic tundra. We inoculated seedlings in a growth chamber experiment with soils collected from the largest tundra fire recorded in the Arctic and used molecular tools to characterize root-associated fungal communities. Seedling biomass was significantly related to the composition of fungal inoculum. Biomass decreased as fire severity increased and the proportion of pathogenic fungi increased. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that effects of fire severity on soil biota reduces seedling performance and thus we hypothesize that in certain ecological contexts fire-severity effects on plant-fungal interactions may dampen the expected increases in tree and shrub establishment after tundra fire.

PURPOSE: The Bruce protocol is traditionally used to assess maximal cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2max), but may have limitations, such as an unknown duration and large work rate increases. The use of self-paced VO2max tests (SPVs) may be beneficial if they are able to elicit similar maximal values in a set period of time. In addition, differences in modality between SPVs have not been explored. The purpose of this study was to compare SPVs, utilizing two different modes, with the Bruce (treadmill) protocol. METHOD: Thirteen healthy, recreationally active individuals (eight men, five women) volunteered and participated in three different laboratory visits with each utilizing a different VO2max testing protocol. The first visit consisted of the Bruce protocol test, and the remaining visits entailed a maximal SPV on a treadmill (TM SPV) and a cycle ergometer (CE SPV). RESULTS: There were no differences in VO2max values between the TM SPV and the Bruce protocol tests (55.6 ± 4.9 vs. 56.2 ± 6.8, respectively; p = .510). As expected, the CE SPV (48.3 ± 7.6) was significantly lower than the other two tests (p < .001). CONCLUSION: The TM SPV was as effective in eliciting an accurate VO2max as the Bruce protocol and did so with less incline and in less time suggesting that there are no changes in the limits of VO2max even when the test is self-paced and perceptually regulated.

BACKGROUND: The longevity of total shoulder replacement is primarily limited by the performance of the ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) glenoid component in vivo. Variations in glenoid design (conformity, thickness), biomechanics (joint kinematics), and UHMWPE material selection (sterilization, cross-linking) distinguish total shoulder replacements from hip and knee arthroplasty devices. These variables can lead to severe mechanical failures, including gross fracture. METHODS: Sixteen retrieved glenoids with severe fracture were analyzed. The explant cohort included 3 material groups (gamma-sterilized Hylamer; gamma-sterilized UHMWPE; and gas plasma-sterilized, remelted, highly cross-linked UHMWPE [HXL]) and a range of conformities (0- to 10-mm radial mismatch). Analysis included fractography (optical and scanning electron microscopy) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy for oxidative analysis. RESULTS: Fracture primarily occurred along the exterior rim for all 16 explants. Fourier transform infrared analysis and fractography revealed significant oxidative embrittlement for all gamma-sterilized glenoids. Fatigue striations and internal flaws were evident on the fracture surface of the HXL glenoid, with little oxidation detected. CONCLUSIONS: Fracture initiated at the external rim of all devices. Elevated oxidation levels and visible material distortion for representative gamma-sterilized conventional and Hylamer devices suggest oxidative embrittlement as a driving force for crack inception and subsequent fracture. Brittle fracture of theHXL glenoid resulted from a combination of elevated contact stress due to a nonconforming surface, an internal flaw, and reduced resistance to fatigue crack growth. This demonstrates that glenoid fracture associated with oxidation has not been eliminated with the advent of modern materials (HXL) in the shoulder domain. American football has become the focus of numerous studies highlighting a growing concern that cumulative exposure to repetitive, sports-related head acceleration events (HAEs) may have negative consequences for brain health, even in the absence of a diagnosed concussion. In this longitudinal study, brain functional connectivity was analyzed in a cohort of high school American football athletes over a single play season and compared against participants in non-collision high school sports. Football athletes underwent four resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging sessions: once before (pre-season), twice during (in-season), and once 34-80 days after the contact activities play season ended (post-season). For each imaging session, functional connectomes (FCs) were computed for each athlete and compared across sessions using a metric reflecting the (self) similarity between two FCs. HAEs were monitored during all practices and games throughout the season using head-mounted sensors. Relative to the pre-season scan session, football athletes exhibited decreased FC self-similarity at the later in-season session, with apparent recovery of self-similarity by the time of the post-season session. In addition, both within and post-season self-similarity was correlated with cumulative exposure to head acceleration events. These results suggest that repetitive exposure to HAEs produces alterations in functional brain connectivity and highlight the necessity of collision-free recovery periods for football athletes.

Obesity, especially in those over the age of 65, is associated with multiple comorbidities and decreased quality of life. Bariatric surgery is an effective method of weight loss and management of comorbidities and is increasingly utilized in younger and middle-aged populations. A retrospective review was performed of patients ≥65 years old who underwent bariatric surgery between 2018 and 2021 at a single institution to evaluate the safety and efficacy of bariatric surgery in older populations. A total of 11 patients were identified with a mean age of 67.5, ranging from 65 to 78. All patients had obesity-related comorbidities including hypertension (90.9%), obstructive sleep apnea (72.7%), diabetes mellitus (54.5%), hyperlipidemia (45.5%), and others. The mean %EWL at 12 months was 26.1% with improvement in comorbidities and no post-operative complications. Our results demonstrate that bariatric surgery can be safe for the geriatric population with improvement in weight loss and comorbidities.

There is a critical need to understand the effectiveness of serum elicited by different SARS-CoV-2 vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 variants. We describe the generation of reference reagents comprised of post-vaccination sera from recipients of different primary vaccines with or without different vaccine booster regimens in order to allow standardized characterization of SARS-CoV-2 neutralization in vitro. We prepared and pooled serum obtained from donors who received a either primary vaccine series alone, or a vaccination strategy that included primary and boosted immunization using available SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccines (BNT162b2, Pfizer and mRNA-1273, Moderna), replication-incompetent adenovirus type 26 vaccine (Ad26.COV2·S, Johnson and Johnson), or recombinant baculovirus-expressed spike protein in a nanoparticle vaccine plus Matrix-M adjuvant (NVX-CoV2373, Novavax). No subjects had a history of clinical SARS-CoV-2 infection, and sera were screened with confirmation that there were no nucleocapsid antibodies detected to suggest natural infection. Twice frozen sera were aliquoted, and serum antibodies were characterized for SARS-CoV-2 spike protein binding (estimated WHO antibody binding units/ml), spike protein competition for ACE-2 binding, and SARS-CoV-2 spike protein pseudotyped lentivirus transduction. These reagents are available for distribution to the research community (BEI Resources), and should allow the direct comparison of antibody neutralization results between different laboratories. Further, these sera are an important tool to evaluate the functional neutralization activity of vaccine-induced antibodies against emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern. IMPORTANCE: The explosion of COVID-19 demonstrated how novel coronaviruses can rapidly spread and evolve following introduction into human hosts. The extent of vaccine- and infection-induced protection against infection and disease severity is reduced over time due to the fall in concentration, and due to emerging variants that have altered antibody binding regions on the viral envelope spike protein. Here, we pooled sera obtained from individuals who were immunized with different SARS-CoV-2 vaccines and who did not have clinical or serologic evidence of prior infection. The sera pools were characterized for direct spike protein binding, blockade of virus-receptor binding, and neutralization of spike protein pseudotyped lentiviruses. These sera pools were aliquoted and are available to allow inter-laboratory comparison of results and to provide a tool to determine the effectiveness of prior vaccines in recognizing and neutralizing emerging variants of concern.

RESUMO

We review research on the role of high-quality listening behavior in attitude change. We examine how listening behaviors can impact attitudes and the mechanisms underlying these effects. The article discusses research that explicitly examines high-quality listening, as well as research that examines behaviors that may indicate high-quality listening or that incorporates high-quality listening into larger interventions. The reviewed research suggests that receiving high-quality listening increases psychological safety and open-minded self-reflection, leading people to consider perspectives they otherwise would not. This in turn leads to less extreme, clearer, and more nuanced views on the topic of conversation. Finally, we highlight the need for further research to better understand the role of listening in attitude change, particularly in non-western cultures.

OBJECTIVE: Problem gambling may be an underappreciated treatment target for reducing self-harm. Multivariate studies examining the relationship between problem gambling and self-harm have returned inconsistent results, perhaps due to insufficient power or differences in study quality. METHOD: We conducted a series of meta-analyses examining the effect of problem gambling on self-harm outcomes of varying severity. We assessed the sensitivity of results to study characteristics, publication bias, and influential cases. To highlight threats to causal inference, we evaluated each study for residual confounding bias. RESULTS: In total, two types of meta-analyses were adequately powered: those assessing (a) the effect of problem gambling (binary) on suicide ideation and (b) problem gambling (binary) on suicide attempt (k = 14 unique studies between the two meta-analyses). For both meta-analyses, we found a positive, statistically significant average effect of problem gambling on the respective self-harm outcome. We did not detect any influential studies among these two meta-analyses, nor residual confounding. However, these findings are limited by the overall quality of included literature. PET-PEESE analysis detected substantial potential publication bias in the main results, with both meta-analytic effects being reduced to statistical nonsignificance. All included studies also used a cross-sectional design for their analysis of interest, thus simultaneity bias cannot be ruled out. CONCLUSION: While these findings suggest there is an appreciable relationship between problem gambling and at least two forms of self-harm (suicide ideation and attempts), well-designed longitudinal research is needed to make more firm conclusions. Preparing a grant proposal is no small feat, especially for research (R-series) grants from the National Institutes of Health. The National Institutes of Health is the largest public funder of biomedical research in the world, and as such, procuring a research grant from the National Institutes of Health is one of the ultimate benchmarks of success for a surgeon-scientist. Most investigators are familiar with the page limits for most R-series grants (12 pages for an R01 and 6 pages for an R21), with the addition of a single page allotted for the specific aims. Interestingly, despite the usual focus on the aforementioned research section, the rest of the application can routinely consist of an additional 100 to 150 pages, which means that pages allotted for the specific aims and research strategy represent only 10% of the complete application package. For busy surgeons, it is this abundance of ancillary documentation that can make preparing a research grant particularly onerous. Fortunately, for some, support exists within the department to help prepare much of this documentation by drawing from previous sources, templates, and boilerplate language that has been developed. Although these resources can significantly reduce the burden on individual investigators, there is a danger of leaning on generalized templates that can dilute the message of the overall grant proposal and introduce extraneous or incorrect information that can ultimately impact the cohesiveness and ultimately the competitiveness of the grant. The focus of this article is to educate surgeon-scientists regarding the purpose and importance of the ancillary information required for National Institutes of Health research grants and how to make the most of institutional resources while tailoring these materials to create a cohesive, competitive grant application.

BACKGROUND: The surgeon-scientist brings a unique perspective to surgical research. The Association of Academic Surgeons and Society of University Surgeons foster the development of surgeon-scientists through foundation awards to residents and junior faculty. We sought to evaluate the academic success of surgeons who received an Association for Academic Surgery/Society of University Surgeons award. METHODS: Information was collected for individuals who received a resident or junior faculty research award from the Association for Academic Surgery or Society of University Surgeons. Google Scholar, Scopus, and the National Institutes of Health Research Portfolio Online Reporting Tools: Expenditures and Results were used to assess scholarly achievements. RESULTS: Eighty-two resident awardees were included, 31 (38%) of whom were female. Thirteen (24%) are now professors, 12 (22%) are division chiefs, and 4 (7%) are department chairs. Resident awardees have a median of 886 citations (interquartile range 237-2,111) and an H-index of 14 (interquartile range 7-23). Seven (13%) went on to receive K08/K23 awards, and 7 (13%) received R01s, with a total of about $200 million in National Institutes of Health funding (79-fold return on investment). Thirty-four junior faculty awardees were included, 10 (29%) of whom were female. Thirteen (38%) are now professors, 12 (35%) are division chiefs, and 7 (21%) are department chairs. Faculty awardees have a median of 2,617 citations (interquartile range 1,343-7,857) and an H-index of 25 (interquartile range 18-49). Four (12%) received K08 or K23 awards, and 10 (29%) received R01s, with about $139 million in National Institutes of Health funding (98-fold return on investment). CONCLUSION: Association for Academic Surgery/Society of University Surgeons research awardees experience high degrees of success in academic surgery. Most resident awardees pursue fellowship training and remain in academic surgery. A high percentage of both faculty and resident awardees hold leadership positions and successfully achieve National Institutes of Health funding.

The ectomycorrhizal fungus Tricholoma populinum is host-specific with Populus species. T. populinum has wind-dispersed progagules and may be capable of long-distance dispersal. In this study, we tested the hypothesis of a panmictic population between Scandinavia and North America. DNA sequences from five nuclear loci were used to assess phylogeographic structure and nucleotide divergence between continents. Tricholoma populinum was composed of Scandinavian and North American lineages with complete absence of shared haplotypes and only one shared nucleotide mutation. Divergence of these lineages was estimated at approx. 1.7-1.0 million yr ago (Ma), which occurred after the estimated divergence of host species Populus tremula and Populus balsamifera/Populus trichocarpa at 5 Ma. Phylogeographic structure was not observed within Scandinavian or North American lineages of T. populinum. Intercontinental divergence appears to have resulted from either allopatric isolation; a recent, rare long-distance dispersal founding event followed by genetic drift; or the response in an obligate mycorrhizal fungus with a narrow host range to contractions and expansion of host distribution during glacial and interglacial episodes within continents. Understanding present genetic variation in populations is important for predicting how obligate symbiotic fungi will adapt to present and future changing climatic conditions.
