OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop a machine learning algorithm using an off-the-shelf digital watch, the Samsung watch (SM-R800), and evaluate its effectiveness for the detection of generalized convulsive seizures (GCS) in persons with epilepsy. METHODS: This multisite epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU) phase 2 study included 36 adult patients. Each patient wore a Samsung watch that contained accelerometer, gyroscope, and photoplethysmographic sensors. Sixty-eight time and frequency domain features were extracted from the sensor data and were used to train a random forest algorithm. A testing framework was developed that would better reflect the EMU setting, consisting of (1) leave-one-patient-out cross-validation (LOPO CV) on GCS patients, (2) false alarm rate (FAR) testing on nonseizure patients, and (3) "fixed-and-frozen" prospective testing on a prospective patient cohort. Balanced accuracy, precision, sensitivity, and FAR were used to quantify the performance of the algorithm. Seizure onsets and offsets were determined by using video-electroencephalographic (EEG) monitoring. Feature importance was calculated as the mean decrease in Gini impurity during the LOPO CV testing. RESULTS: LOPO CV results showed balanced accuracy of .93 (95% confidence interval [CI] = .8-.98), precision of .68 (95% CI = .46-.85), sensitivity of .87 (95% CI = .62-.96), and FAR of .21/24 h (interquartile range [IQR] = 0-.90). Testing the algorithm on patients without seizure resulted in an FAR of .28/24 h (IQR = 0-.61). During the "fixed-and-frozen" prospective testing, two patients had three GCS, which were detected by the algorithm, while generating an FAR of .25/24 h (IQR = 0-.89). Feature importance showed that heart rate-based features outperformed accelerometer/gyroscope-based features. SIGNIFICANCE: Commercially available wearable digital watches that reliably detect GCS, with minimum false alarm rates, may overcome usage adoption and other limitations of custom-built devices. Contingent on the outcomes of a prospective phase 3 study, such devices have the potential to provide non-EEG-based seizure surveillance and forecasting in the clinical setting.

Hepatotoxicity is frequently observed following acute cadmium (Cd) exposure in chicken. Oxidative stress and subsequent inflammation are regarded as the main reasons for cadmium-induced liver injury. NOD-like receptor (NLR) family pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome-induced pyroptosis is involved in various inflammatory diseases, including liver injury. Poultry are more susceptible to harmful effects of heavy metals. However, the mechanism of cadmium-induced liver injury in chicken is still elusive. In this study, the effect of cadmium on chicken liver cells and the underlying mechanisms were investigated. The results showed mitochondria was damaged and excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) were generated in chicken liver cell line LMH after cadmium exposure. Furthermore, cadmium-induced NLRP3 inflammasome activation and the cell membrane rupture indicated LMH cells pyroptosis. The ROS scavengers, acetylcysteine (NAC) and Mito-TEMPO prevented pyroptosis in LMH cells, suggesting that ROS were responsible for the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome induced by cadmium. Additionally, anti-oxidative transcription factor Nrf2 was inhibited after cadmium exposure, explaining the excessive ROS generation. In summary, our study showed that cadmium leads to ROS generation by inducing mitochondrial damage and inhibiting Nrf2 activity, which promotes NLRP3 inflammasome activation and eventually induces pyroptosis in LMH cells.

BACKGROUND: To explore whether emotional expressivity and the patterns of language use could predict benefits from expressive writing (EW) of breast cancer (BC) patients in a culture that strongly discourages emotional disclosure. METHODS: Data were obtained from a recent trial in which we compared the health outcomes between a prolonged EW group (12 sessions) and a standard EW group (four sessions) (n = 56 per group) of BC patients receiving chemotherapy. The Chinese texts were tokenized using the THU Lexical Analyser for Chinese. Then, LIWC2015 was used to quantify positive and negative affect word use. RESULTS: Our first hypothesis that BC patients with higher levels of emotional expressivity tended to use higher levels of positive and negative affect words in texts was not supported (r = 0.067, p = 0.549 and r = 0.065, p = 0.559, respectively). The level of emotional expressivity has a significant effect on the quality of life (QOL), and those who used more positive or fewer negative affective words in texts had a better QOL (all p < 0.05). However, no significant difference was identified in physical and psychological well-being (all p > 0.05). Furthermore, the patterns of affective word use during EW did not mediate the effects of emotional expressivity on health outcomes (all p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that the level of emotional expressivity and the pattern of affective word use could be factors that may moderate the effects of EW on QOL, which may help clinicians identify the individuals most likely to benefit from such writing exercises in China.

OBJECTIVE: Severe respiratory dysfunction induced by generalized convulsive seizures (GCS) is now thought to be a common mechanism for sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). In a mouse model of seizure-induced death, increased interictal respiratory variability was reported in mice that later died of respiratory arrest after GCS. We studied respiratory variability in epilepsy patients as a predictive tool for severity of postictal hypoxemia, a potential biomarker for SUDEP risk. We then explored the relationship between respiratory variability and central CO2 drive, measured by the hypercapnic ventilatory response (HCVR). METHODS: We reviewed clinical, video-electroencephalography, and respiratory (belts, airflow, pulse oximeter, and HCVR) data of epilepsy patients. Mean, SD, and coefficient of variation (CV) of interbreath interval (IBI) were calculated. Primary outcomes were: (1) nadir of capillary oxygen saturation (SpO2 ) and (2) duration of oxygen desaturation. Poincaré plots of IBI were created. Covariates were evaluated in univariate models, then, based on Akaike information criteria (AIC), multivariate regression models were created. RESULTS: Of 66 GCS recorded in 131 subjects, 30 had interpretable respiratory data. In the multivariate model with the lowest AIC value, duration of epilepsy was a significant predictor of duration of oxygen desaturation. Duration of tonic phase and CV of IBI during the third postictal minute correlated with SpO2 nadir, whereas CV of IBI during non-rapid eye movement sleep had a negative correlation. Poincaré plots showed that long-term variability was significantly greater in subjects with ≥200 s of postictal oxygen desaturation after GCS compared to those with <200 s desaturation. Finally, HCVR slope showed a negative correlation with measures of respiratory variability. SIGNIFICANCE: These results indicate that interictal respiratory variability predicts severity of postictal oxygen desaturation, suggesting its utility as a potential biomarker. They also suggest that interictal respiratory control may be abnormal in some patients with epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center (NACC) and the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) are two major data sharing resources for Alzheimer's Disease (AD) research. NACC and ADNI strive to make their data more FAIR (findable, interoperable, accessible and reusable) for the broader research community. However, there is limited work harmonizing and supporting cross-cohort interoperability of the two resources. METHOD: In this paper, we leverage an ontology-based approach to harmonize data elements in the two resources and develop a web-based query system to search patient cohorts across the two resources. We first mapped data elements across NACC and ADNI, and performed value harmonization for the mapped data elements with inconsistent permissible values. Then we built an Alzheimer's Disease Data Element Ontology (ADEO) to model the mapped data elements in NACC and ADNI. We further developed a prototype cross-cohort query system to search patient cohorts across NACC and ADNI. RESULTS: After manual review, we found 172 mappings between NACC and ADNI. These 172 mappings were further used to construct common concepts in ADEO. Our data element mapping and harmonization resulted in five files storing common concepts, variables in NACC and ADNI, mappings between variables and common concepts, permissible values of categorical type data elements, and coding inconsistency harmonization, respectively. Our cross-cohort query system consists of three core architectural elements: a web-based interface, an advanced query engine, and a backend MongoDB database. CONCLUSIONS: In this work, ADEO has been specifically designed to facilitate data harmonization and cross-cohort query of NACC and ADNI data resources. Although our prototype cross-cohort query system was developed for exploring NACC and ADNI, its backend and frontend framework has been designed and implemented to be generally applicable to other domains for querying patient cohorts from multiple heterogeneous data sources.

The existing optical strain sensors based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) have limitations, such as a complex structure, a limited strain range (±200 µÎµ) and poor linearity performance (R-squared value < 0.9920); these limitations affect their potential practical applications. Here, four FBG strain sensors equipped with planar UV-curable resin are investigated. The proposed FBG strain sensors have a simple structure, a large strain range (±1800 µÎµ) and excellent linearity performance (R-squared value ≥ 0.9998); they further produce the following performances: (1) good optical properties, including an undistorted Bragg peak shape, narrow bandwidth (-3 dB bandwidth ≤ 0.65 nm) and a high side mode suppression ratio (SMSR, the absolute value of SMSR ≥ 15 dB); (2) good temperature sensing properties with high temperature sensitivities (≥47.7 pm/°C) and a good linearity performance (R-squared value ≥ 0.9990); and (3) excellent strain sensing properties with no hysteresis behavior (hysteresis error ≤ 0.058%) and excellent repeatability (repeatability error ≤ 0.045%). Based on their excellent properties, the proposed FBG strain sensors are expected to be applied as high-performance strain sensing devices.

This study aimed to explore the correlation between rhizosphere soil microorganisms of wild Arnebia euchroma and the content of medicinal components to provide guidance for the selection of the ecological planting base. The total DNA of rhizosphere soil microorganisms of wild A. euchroma was extracted, and the microbial community structure of rhizosphere soil microorganisms was analyzed by IlluminaMiseq high-throughput sequencing technology. The content of total hydroxynaphthoquinone pigment and ß,ß'-dimethylacrylalkannin in medicinal materials was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography(HPLC). The physicochemical pro-perties of rhizosphere soil of wild A. euchroma in main producing areas were determined, and the correlation of soil microbial abundance with index component content and soil physicochemical properties was analyzed by SPSS software. The results showed that the species composition of rhizosphere fungi and bacteria in A. euchroma from different habitats was similar at the phylum and genus levels, but their relative abundance, richness index(Chao1), and community diversity(Simpson) index were different. Correlation analysis showed that the content of available phosphorus in soil was positively correlated with the content of total hydroxynaphthoquinone pigment and ß,ß'-dimethylacrylalkannin, and the abundance of five fungal genera such as Solicoccozyma and six bacterial genera such as Pseudo-nocardia and Bradyrhizobium was positively correlated with the content of medicinal components in medicinal materials. The abundance of Bradyrhizobium was significantly positively correlated with the content of ß,ß'-dimethylacrylalkanin. The abundance of fungi such as Archaeorhizomyces was significantly positively correlated with the content of available phosphorus in rhizosphere soil, and Bradyrhizobium was significantly negatively correlated with soil pH. Therefore, the abundance of fungi and bacteria in the rhizosphere of A. euchroma has a certain correlation with the medicinal components and the physicochemical properties of the rhizosphere soil, which can provide a scientific basis for the selection of ecological planting bases in the later stage.

BACKGROUND: Runs of homozygosity (ROH) are continuous homozygous regions typically located in the DNA sequence of diploid organisms. Identifications of ROH that lead to reduced performance can provide valuable insight into the genetic architecture of complex traits. Here, we systematically investigated the population genetic structure of five Anhui indigenous pig breeds (AHIPs), and compared them to those of five Western commercial pig breeds (WECPs). Furthermore, we examined the occurrence and distribution of ROHs in the five AHIPs and estimated the inbreeding coefficients based on the ROHs (FROH) and homozygosity (FHOM). Finally, we identified genomic regions with high frequencies of ROHs and annotated candidate genes contained therein. RESULTS: The WECPs and AHIPs were clearly differentiated into two separate clades consistent with their geographical origins, as revealed by the population structure and principal component analysis. We identified 13,530 ROHs across all individuals, of which 4,555 and 8,975 ROHs were unique to AHIPs and WECPs, respectively. Most ROHs identified in our study were short (< 10 Mb) or medium (10-20 Mb) in length. WECPs had significantly higher numbers of short ROHs, and AHIPs generally had longer ROHs. FROH values were significantly lower in AHIPs than in WECPs, indicating that breed improvement and conservation programmes were successful in AHIPs. On average, FROH and FHOM values were highly correlated (0.952-0.991) in AHIPs and WECPs. A total of 27 regions had a high frequency of ROHs and contained 17 key candidate genes associated with economically important traits in pigs. Among these, nine candidate genes (CCNT2, EGR2, MYL3, CDH13, PROX1, FLVCR1, SETD2, FGF18, and FGF20) found in WECPs were related to muscular and skeletal development, whereas eight candidate genes (CSN1S1, SULT1E1, TJP1, ZNF366, LIPC, MCEE, STAP1, and DUSP) found in AHIPs were associated with health, reproduction, and fatness traits. CONCLUSION: Our findings provide a useful reference for the selection and assortative mating of pig breeds, laying the groundwork for future research on the population genetic structures of AHIPs, ultimately helping protect these local varieties.

Four undescribed sulfoxide-containing derivatives, sinkiangenoxides A and B, (2Z, 4E)-sinkiangenoxide C, and (2E, 4E)-sinkiangenoxide C (1:  - 4: ), and one known compound, 1-(methylthio)propyl (E)-1-propenyl disulfide (5: ), were isolated from the resin of Ferula sinkiangensis. Their structures were determined based on spectroscopic methods, including IR, UV, HRESIMS, NMR, and CD analysis. Compounds 2:  - 4: showed moderate cytotoxic activities against four human cancer cell lines with IC50 values ranging from 15.0 to 40.3 µM. Sinkiangenoxide B (2: ) was shown to induce apoptosis in HepG2 cells. In addition, compound 5: effectively attenuated lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide release and TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6, and IL-10 expression.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Wilson disease (WD) is an autosomal recessive copper metabolic disorder caused by mutations in ATP7B. Sanger sequencing is currently used for ATP7B variant identification. However, the ATP7B gene contains 21 exons, which makes sequencing of the entire gene both complex and time-consuming. Therefore, a simpler assay is urgently needed. METHODS: We performed a laboratory and clinical evaluation of an oligonucleotide microarray for the detection of 24 ATP7B recurrent mutations (except p.P992L) in Chinese patients with WD. RESULTS: The accuracy of the microarray was evaluated by screening for ATP7B mutations in 126 patients including 106 suspected WD samples and 20 patients with other liver diseases as negative control. Results were confirmed by Sanger sequencing. We established a reliable microarray system for the rapid detection of the 24 ATP7B mutations, with a sensitivity of 30 ng/test genomic DNA and specificity of 100% for all loci; the coefficient of variation in repeatability tests was <10%. Clinical evaluation showed an overall concordance between the microarray detection and sequencing of 100%, and 81.13% (86/106) of suspected WD cases showed ATP7B mutations by microarray detection. Microarray and Sanger sequencing identified p.R778L (50.94%), p.A874V (17.92%), p.P992L (11.32%), p.V1106I (11.32%), and p.I1148T (6.60%) as the most common mutations in WD patients. CONCLUSIONS: Our microarray system is customizable and easily used for high-throughput detection of certain recurrent ATP7B mutations, providing a simpler method suitable for WD genetic diagnosis in China.

AIMS: To examine patient-caregiver concordances about psychological distress among Chinese patients with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy and identify factors related to concordance among patients and family caregivers. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: From October 2019 to June 2020, 137 patient-caregiver dyads were enrolled. Sociodemographic information, the distress thermometer (including the problem list), the Distress Disclosure Index and the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale were used to collect data. Data were analysed using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC), kappa statistics, two related samples test, chi-square tests and/or Fisher's exact tests and binary logistic regression. RESULTS: Overall, fair agreement was identified between patients' and caregivers' reports (intraclass correlation coefficients [ICC] = .528). Patients reported significantly higher psychological distress scores than paired caregiver reports. Lower psychological distress concordance was found among patients with comorbidities (odds ratio [OR], 0.352; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.155-0.798) and lower levels of self-disclosure (OR, 0.402; 95% CI, 0.186-0.868). CONCLUSION: There was relatively low concordance between patients' reports and caregivers' perceptions of psychological distress. Family caregivers tended to underestimate patients' psychological distress. A comorbid condition and lower levels of self-disclosure contributed to this bias. IMPACT: Having an awareness of the incongruence between patient and caregiver may help healthcare providers better interpret caregiver assessments. Healthcare providers should reinforce patient-caregiver dyadic psychosocial education to improve concordance. More psychological care and substantial emotional support should be provided for Chinese breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy by family caregivers and healthcare providers.

Imported medicinal materials are an important part of Chinese medicinal resources. To be specific, about 10% of the around 600 commonly used Chinese medicinal materials are from abroad, and the introduction of foreign medicinal materials has promoted the development of Chinese medicine. Amid the advancement of reform and opening up and the "Belt and Road" Initiative, major headway has been made in the cross-border trade in China, bringing opportunities for the import of medicinal materials from border ports. However, for a long time, there is a lack of systematic investigation on the types of exotic medicinal materials at border ports. In the fourth national census of traditional Chinese medicine resources, National Resource Center for Chinese Materia Medica, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, together with several organizations, investigated the nearly 40 border ports, Chinese medicinal material markets, and border trade markets in 6 provinces/autonomous regions in China for the first time and recorded the types, sources, circulation, and the transaction characteristics of imported medicinal materials. Moreover, they invited experts to identify the origins of the collected 237 medicinal materials. In addition, the status quo and the problems of the medicinal materials were summarized. This study is expected to lay a basis for clarifying the market and origins of imported medicinal materials as well as the scientific research on and supervision of them.

Liver fibrosis, a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, leads to liver damage, seriously threatening human health. In our previous study, we demonstrated that 14 kDa phosphohistidine phosphatase (PHP14) was upregulated in fibrotic liver tissue and involved in the migration and lamellipodia formation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). In this study, we evaluated PHP14 as a therapeutic target for liver fibrosis and investigated the mechanism by which it mediates liver fibrosis. AAV-shPhpt1 administration significantly attenuates CCl4-induced liver fibrosis in mice. In particular, fibrosis-associated inflammatory infiltration was significantly suppressed after PHP14 knockdown. Mechanistically, PHP14 regulated macrophage recruitment, infiltration, and migration by affecting podosome formation of macrophages. Inhibition of PHP14 decreased the expression of the fibrogenic signature at the early stage of liver fibrogenesis and the activation of HSCs in vivo. Thus, PHP14 can be considered a potential therapeutic target for liver fibrosis.NEW & NOTEWORTHY PHP14 inhibition via adeno-associated virus (AAV)-mediated gene silencing could potently attenuate carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver fibrosis. PHP14 could regulate the migration of macrophages to the site of injury in vivo. PHP14 knockdown in vivo influenced the environment of fibrogenesis and relevant signaling pathways, subsequently affecting myofibroblast activation.

In this report, we successfully implement a unique cross-field beam deflector by exploiting the modulation of a one-dimensional refractive index in a copper-doped potassium tantalite niobite crystal. A theoretical model is established based on an electrostrictive effect regulated by the dynamic polarized nano-domains to explicate the mechanism of the abnormal beam deflection which is perpendicular to the applied electric field. Experimental results agree well with our theoretical deduction while validating the interactions between the dynamic polarized nano-domains and the applied electric field. Our findings will break the limitation of conventional electro-optic deflectors, paving the way to develop promising optical functional devices with a large field-of-view scanning angle and ultra-low driving voltage.

Big Data is no longer a novel concept in health care. Its promise of positive impact is not only undiminished, but daily enhanced by seemingly endless possibilities. Epilepsy is a disorder with wide heterogeneity in both clinical and research domains, and thus lends itself to Big Data concepts and techniques. It is therefore inevitable that Big Data will enable multimodal research, integrating various aspects of "-omics" domains, such as phenome, genome, microbiome, metabolome, and proteome. This scope and granularity have the potential to change our understanding of prognosis and mortality in epilepsy. The scale of new discovery is unprecedented due to the possibilities promised by advances in machine learning, in particular deep learning. The subsequent possibilities of personalized patient care through clinical decision support systems that are evidence-based, adaptive, and iterative seem to be within reach. A major objective is not only to inform decision-making, but also to reduce uncertainty in outcomes. Although the adoption of electronic health record (EHR) systems is near universal in the United States, for example, advanced clinical decision support in or ancillary to EHRs remains sporadic. In this review, we discuss the role of Big Data in the development of clinical decision support systems for epilepsy care, prognostication, and discovery.

The present study screened the effect of Myricitrin on cognitive deficits post-cerebral ischemic stroke and the involved mechanism. The rats were submitted to middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) and were treated with sodium butyrate or Myricitrin (15 and 30 mg/kg) for 28 days. The spatial memory was studied by Morris water maze (MWM). After 4 weeks, the rats were euthanized and hippocampus region was utilized for neurochemical and biochemical changes. The extent of histone acetylation was studied by ELISA. Protein levels were analyzed by Western blot analysis. The mRNA levels were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). In silico bioinformatics docking studies were done for target confirmation of Myricitrin. The treatment of Myricitrin showed improved memory in MWM compared to rats treated with vehicle, and the effects of Myricitrin were similar to sodium butyrate-treated rats. At a dose of 30 mg/kg Myricitrin, the histone deacetylase content was decreased, the expression levels of BDNF were increased, the levels of acetylated H3 and H4 along with Syn-I in the hippocampus region were over-expressed compared to control vehicle-treated rats. However, at low dose, i.e., 15 mg/kg Myricitrin failed to show alterations in biochemical as well as neurochemical markers. Docking studies suggested the BDNF and Sun-I as potential target proteins of Myricitrin. The cognitive ameliorating effect of Myricitrin post-cerebral ischemia stroke can be attributed to increased expression of BDNF and Syn-I and modulation of histone acetylation.

Fast temporal query on large EHR-derived data sources presents an emerging big data challenge, as this query modality is intractable using conventional strategies that have not focused on addressing Covid-19-related research needs at scale. We introduce a novel approach called Event-level Inverted Index (ELII) to optimize time trade-offs between one-time batch preprocessing and subsequent open-ended, user-specified temporal queries. An experimental temporal query engine has been implemented in a NoSQL database using our new ELII strategy. Near-real-time performance was achieved on a large Covid-19 EHR dataset, with 1.3 million unique patients and 3.76 billion records. We evaluated the performance of ELII on several types of queries: classical (non-temporal), absolute temporal, and relative temporal. Our experimental results indicate that ELII accomplished these queries in seconds, achieving average speed accelerations of 26.8 times on relative temporal query, 88.6 times on absolute temporal query, and 1037.6 times on classical query compared to a baseline approach without using ELII. Our study suggests that ELII is a promising approach supporting fast temporal query, an important mode of cohort development for Covid-19 studies.

PURPOSE: Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) self-management plays an important role in the lymphedema therapy. However, clinical knowledge of BCRL self-management remains minimal. This study aims to explore the experience surrounding lymphedema self-management from the perspectives of BCRL patients and healthcare professionals. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were implemented with BCRL patients and healthcare professionals. Audio-recordings of interviews were transcribed verbatim and thematic analysis was undertaken to analyze the interview data. RESULTS: Thirteen BCRL patients (aged 34-65 years) and nine healthcare professionals (2 physicians, 4 nurses, and 3 lymphedema therapists) were interviewed. Five themes emerged from interviews with participants: knowledge-attitude-practice surrounding lymphedema self-management, emotional reactions towards lymphedema self-management, factors influencing lymphedema self-management, support needs for lymphedema self-management, healthcare professional support of BCRL self-management. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed knowledge-attitude-practice, feelings, influencing factors, roles, dilemmas, and support needs regarding BCRL self-management. Greater effort is required for healthcare professionals to strengthen the lymphedema self-management. Providing more educational program and holistic support, and strengthening the facilitators and controlling the barriers might benefit promoting lymphedema self-management. Likewise, healthcare professionals need adequate training to be able to meet patients' self-management support needs.

This study established high-performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) fingerprints of Chinese medicines derived from Apocynum venetum and Poacynum pictum in Xinjiang and explored their composition differences with the combination of content determination, similarity analysis, cluster analysis and principal component analysis. The HPLC conditions included Phenomenex Kinetex C_(18) column(4.6 mm ×100 mm, 2.6 µm), acetonitrile-0.01% trifluoroacetic acid aqueous solution as mobile phase, gradient elution, flow rate of 0.6 mL·min~(-1), detection wavelength of 281 nm and column temperature of 25 ℃. The content of chlorogenic acid, quercetin-3-O-sophoroside, rutin, hyperin, isoquercitrin, trifolin and astragalin was determined in 31 batches of medicinal materials, and fingerprint research and chemometric analysis were performed with Similarity Evaluation System for Chromatographic Fingerprint of Traditional Chinese Medicine(Version 2004 A) and SPSS 21.0. In the Chinese Pharmacopoeia 2020, the quality of Apocyni Veneti Folium is controlled by character identification, microscopic identification, thin layer chromatography identification and quantitative determination of hyperin. There were 21 common peaks of A. venetum and P. pictum in the HPLC fingerprints, 5 of which were identified as chlorogenic acid, hyperin, isoquercitrin, trifolin and astragalin, with their content also determined. Except for 3 batches of medicinal materials, the similarity of other 28 batches was higher than 0.83, indicating good similarity. Two categories were formed in the cluster analysis based on content determination, which showed that some differences existed in similarities between different regions of Xinjiang. The medicinal materials were ranked by quality with principal component analysis, and the results indicated that the top 15 all came from northern Xinjiang. The quality difference of A. venetum and P. pictum had a correlation with the place of origin. This study provides a reference for the analysis and evaluation of A. venetum and P. pictum from different habitats and the selection of introduction and cultivation areas.

We report the fabrication of a hexagonal cladding waveguide by femtosecond laser direct writing (FLDW) in a potassium tantalate niobate (KTN) crystal with a large electric-optical effect. Confocal micro-Raman results show the laser-induced phase transition occurs in the filament areas during the waveguide fabrication. The small filaments can strongly confine the polar nanoregions especially in its ferroelectric state to enhance the waveguide birefringence, enabling excellent polarization maintaining features for both TE and TM-polarized light propagations. The temperature-dependent phase transition allows for an active control of waveguide polarization modes as well as a switchable polarization-maintaining feature.
