OBJECTIVES: Most signatures are constructed on the basis of RNA or protein expression levels. The value of vascular invasion-related signatures based on lncRNA pairs, regardless of their specific expression level in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), is not yet clear. METHODS: Vascular invasion-related differentially expressed lncRNA (DElncRNA) pairs were identified with a two-lncRNA combination strategy by using a novel modeling algorithm. Based on the optimal cutoff value of the ROC curve, patients with HCC were classified into high- and low-risk subgroups. We used KM survival analysis to evaluate the overall survival rate of patients in the high- and low-risk subgroups. The independent indicators of survival were identified using univariate and multivariate Cox analyses. RESULTS: Five pairs of vascular invasion-related DElncRNAs were selected to develop a predictive model for HCC. High-risk subgroups were closely associated with aggressive clinicopathological characteristics and genes, chemotherapeutic sensitivity, and highly expressed immune checkpoint inhibitors. CONCLUSIONS: We identified a signature composed of 5 pairs of vascular invasion-related lncRNAs that does not require absolute expression levels of lncRNAs and shows promising clinical predictive value for HCC prognosis. This predictive model provides deep insight into the value of vascular invasion-related lncRNAs in prognosis.

Lonicera japonica Thunb. is a traditional Chinese medicinal plant, which widely cultivated in China, Japan and Korea. From August to October in 2021 and 2022, severe leaf spots symptoms were observed on L. japonica in medicinal botanical garden of Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (36°55'89"N, 116°79'91"E), Jinan, Shandong Province, China. The disease incidence was above 80% in the 25 acre cultivation area. Early symptoms were small brown spots on the leaves. Then the number of small spots gradually increased and spread over the entire leaves. The small brown spots seldom merge together to form larger lesions. Leaves with typical symptoms were collected from twenty individual plants, and cut into small 5×5 mm fragments in the junction of infected and healthy tissues. The fragments were sterilized in 75% ethanol for 30 s and 1% NaClO for 60 s, rinsed three times in sterile water, and then placed on potato dextrose agar (PDA). After 3 days of incubation at 25°C, fungal plugs along the edge of the colony were cut and transferred to new PDA for purification. A total number of 23 colonies with similar morphological characteristics were obtained, and three representative strains (Lj14, Lj18 and Lj20) were selected for subsequent study. The colonies grew rapidly on PDA and covered the entire petri dish in 4 days. Colonies had abundant aerial hyphae, initially white, round, later turning gray and black. Conidia were oblate or nearly spherical, single-celled, black, and measured in size from 9.6 to 13.2 µm × 7.9 to 16.1 µm in diameter (n=150) (Figure S1). The observed characteristics were close to those of Nigrospora spp. ( Wang et al. 2017). The genomic DNA was extracted, and PCR amplification of the rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS), ß-tubulin gene (TUB), and translation elongation factor 1-alpha gene (TEF1) were completed by primers ITS1/ITS4, Bt2a/Bt2b and EF1-728F/EF1-986R (Carbone and Kohn, 1999). Sequences were deposited in GenBank (accession nos. OR936661, OR936662, OR936671 for ITS, OR947626, OR947627, OR947628 for TUB, and OR947629, OR947630, OR947631 for TEF1 sequences, respectively). BLAST analyses of ITS (OR936661), TUB(OR947626) and TEF1 (OR947629) sequences exhibited 100% (487 bp out of 487 bp), 99.48% (380 bp out of 382 bp), and 99.6% (248 bp out of 249 bp) similarity to the sequences of N. oryzae strains KoLRI_053384 (MZ855426), LC2991 (KY019496) and LC7307 (KY019409), respectively. Lj14, Lj18 and Lj20 formed a clade with N. oryzae LC6763 and LC2991 in phylogenetic tree (Figure S2). Based on morphological and molecular evidence, the pathogen was identified as N. oryzae (Berk. &Broome) Petch. To fulfill Koch's postulates, the pathogenicity was tested in vivo experiments. Thirty non-wounded healthy leaves of ten intact plants were inoculated with 10 µl spore suspension (106 spores/ml) of three strains, respectively. As negative control, thirty leaves of ten healthy plants were inoculated with sterile water. The inoculated plants were placed at 28°C in the growth chamber with high relative humidity. The pathogenicity tests were repeated three times. Distinct symptoms similar to that of natural conditions were observed on the leaves of inoculated plants after 4 to 7 days. The strain was reisolated from the lesions and identified as N. oryzae by morphological features and ITS sequence. The pathogen has been reported to cause leaf spot disease on tobacco (Wang et al. 2022) and asiatic dayflower (Qiu et al. 2022). To our knowledge, this is the first report of leaf spot caused by N. oryzae on Lonicera japonica in China. The research will be helpful for leaf spot disease control.

The development of the solar market has been fast in the past decades, and the number of photovoltaic module installations is large. The photovoltaic modules have a lifetime of about 25 years and need recovery after that. The aluminium-back surface field (Al-BSF) module is the first kind of large-scale installed module and will come to its end of life in the next few years. The recycling of silicon material in the Al-BSF module is investigated in this work. The components of the module are separated, and the silicon material in the module is collected and then purified by (aluminium-silicon) Al-Si solvent refining for reuse. It is found that Al-Si solvent refining removed key impurity elements, namely boron and phosphorus, in the collected silicon. Kinetics has a great effect on boron and phosphorus removal, and boron and phosphorus contents in purified silicon decrease with decreasing cooling rate. The boron and phosphorus contents in silicon are lowered to 0.28 and 0.03 ppmw, respectively, after two times of Al-Si solvent refining with the cooling rate of 5.55 * 10-4 K second-1, and it meets the requirement of solar-grade silicon.

Apples are rich in vitamins and dietary fiber and are one of the essential fruits in people's daily diet. China has always been a big apple consumer, and with the improvement of people's life quality, nutrition, and health requirements, the demand for high-quality apples has increased year by year. Apple mold heart disease is one of the main diseases affecting apple quality. However, this disease cannot be easily detected from the surface, so it is difficult to detect mold heart disease. Therefore, this paper focuses on the analysis of seven non-destructive detection technologies, including near infrared spectroscopy technology, hyperspectral technology, Raman spectroscopy technology, electronic nose technology, acoustic technology, electrical technology, and magnetic technology, summarizes their application status in the detection of apple mold heart disease, and then analyzes their advantages and disadvantages. Combined with the current rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, this paper proposes the future development trends of using non-destructive technologies to detect apple mold heart disease. It is expected to provide basic theory and application references for the intelligent detection of apple mold heart disease.

OBJECTIVE: This meta-analytic study examined the effects of exercise training on depressive symptoms in mild stroke patients and the moderating effects of exercise type, therapeutic method, culture, sex, and gross domestic product (GDP) in the patient's country. METHODS: The Metafor package in R was chosen to conduct the meta-analysis, and the quality of each empirical study was evaluated according to the grading system in Cochrane. We included 36 empirical studies and 1477 patients. RESULTS: The results showed that the treatment effect of exercise training on depression in mild stroke patients was significant. The moderating effects of culture and therapeutic method were significant, but not for exercise type, sex, or GDP in the patient's country. The moderating effect of culture can be explained by the therapeutic method in different cultures. CONCLUSION: Fitness exercise is an effective method for improving depressive symptoms in mild stroke patients. Its effectiveness is moderated by the therapeutic method but is not affected by demographics, exercise type, gender, or GDP level.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of information about regulatory T cells (Tregs) and inflammatory phenotypes in patients with asthma. In this study, we aimed to compare the characteristics of Tregs in patients with eosinophilic asthma. METHODS: Forty healthy and 120 stable asthmatic patients were recruited. Sputum and airway inflammatory phenotypes were assessed, and all patients were followed for one year. Human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were collected and stimulated with phytohemagglutinin (PHA) and Dermatophagoides farina (Derp) to detect CD4+CD25+FOXP3+T cells and Foxp3 levels. Interleukin (IL)-13, IL-5, IL-17, IL-9, and interferon (IFN)-γ levels were measured. RESULTS: 38.33% of patients had eosinophilic asthma, 13.33% had neutrophilic asthma, 6.67% had mixed granulocytic asthma, and 41.67% had pauci-granulocytic asthma. The eosinophilic asthma patients had a relatively high Asthma Control Test (ACT) score, an increased prediction and improvement FEV1 (%) rate, and elevated total IgE serum levels (P < 0.05). T helper cell 2 (Th2) cytokines IL-13 and IL-5 were predominantly expressed in the eosinophilic phenotype, while the Th1 cytokine IFN-γ and Th17 cytokine were found in the neutrophilic phenotype. IL-10 was significantly lower in eosinophilic asthmatic patients compared to the controls (P < 0.05). CD4+CD25+FOXP3+T cells (%Tregs) and Foxp3 gene expression in the PHA stimulated eosinophilic asthma samples were significantly lower compared to the control samples (P < 0.05). The airway inflammation phenotypes remained stable after one-year of therapy. CONCLUSION: Asthmatic patients with the eosinophilic phenotype in this study were deficient in Tregs, as characterized by a Th2 cell-biased pattern.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the expression and prognostic significance of PIK3CB in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) and to analyse the possible molecular mechanism that promotes LUAD development. METHODS: Differences of PIK3CB expression at transcriptional level between LUAD and normal tissues were analysed with the Timer and UALCAN databases. Then, immunohistochemical staining was performed to investigate PIK3CB expression at the protein level, and relationships between PIK3CB and clinical characteristics were accessed. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression were performed to identify the independent prognostic risk factors for LUAD. Genetic alterations were analysed using the cBioPortal database. The main coexpressed genes and enrichment pathways of PIK3CB were estimated with the LinkedOmics database. RESULTS: Compared with normal tissues, PIK3CB was higherly expressed in LUAD at the transcriptional level and protein level, respectively. PIK3CB expression was closely related to prognosis of LUAD patients, and PIK3CB protein expression was associated with lymph node metastasis and pathological differentiation, but not related to sex, age, pleural invasion, vascular invasion, tumour site, tumour size or clinical stage. PIK3CB and tumour size were independent risk factors for LUAD patients. The expression of PIK3CB was negatively correlated with AKT1 and AKT2, but there was no significant correlation with AKT3, and strong positive correlations with ARMC8, DNAJC13 and PIK3R4. The main enrichment pathways of PIK3CB and related genes included adherens junctions and the phosphatidylinositol signalling pathways, ErbB signalling pathways, Hedgehog signalling pathways, and C-type lectin receptor signalling pathways. Therefore, we hypothesized that PIK3CB expression did not promote LUAD development through the classical PI3K/AKT pathway. CONCLUSION: High PIK3CB expression was associated with the development of LUAD and worse prognosis. PIK3CB was an independent risk factor for LUAD patients. Therefore, this study provides a reliable reference for the prognostic assessment and targeted therapy for LUAD patients.

Distributed array radar provides new prospects for three-dimensional (3D) inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging. The accuracy of image registration, as an essential part of 3D ISAR imaging, affects the performance of 3D reconstruction. In this paper, the imaging process of distributed array ISAR is proposed according to the imaging model. The ISAR images of distributed array radar at different APCs have different distribution of scatters. When the local distribution of scatters for the same target are quite different, the performance of the existing ISAR image registration methods may not be optimal. Therefore, an image registration method is proposed by integrating the feature-based method and the area-based method. The proposed method consists of two stages: coarse registration and fine registration. In the first stage, a dominant scatters model is established based on scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT). In the second stage, sub-pixel precision registration is achieved using the local correlation matching method. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by comparison with other image registration methods. The 3D reconstruction of the registered experimental data is carried out to assess the practicability of the proposed method.

PURPOSE: Hidden blood loss (HBL) is a growing area of interest for spinal surgeons. Simultaneously, spine surgeons' pursuit of minimally invasive spine surgery has never ceased, as evidenced by the increasing number of articles comparing percutaneous endoscopic transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (Endo-TLIF) and minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (Mis-TLIF). However, there has been no comparison of HBL between Endo-TLIF and Mis-TLIF. This study aimed to compare HBL, visible blood loss (VBL), and total blood loss (TBL) following Endo-TLIF and Mis-TLIF and evaluate the clinical significance of these procedures. METHODS: Between October 2017 and October 2019, 370 patients underwent lumbar interbody fusion at our institution and were followed up for at least 24 months. Our study included 41 Endo-TLIF and 43 Mis-TLIF cases. We recorded each patient's age, height, weight, and haematocrit and calculated the TBL, which was used to indirectly obtain the HBL. Additionally, we compared the clinical outcomes of these two groups, including visual analogue scores for the lumbar spine and leg (VAS-Back; VAS-Leg), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) scores, disease type, operative segment, and intervertebral fusion and complication rates. RESULTS: Endo-TLIF had significantly lower HBL, VBL, and TBL values than Mis-TLIF (P < 0.05 for all). Although Endo-TLIF contained significantly less HBL than Mis-TLIF, the HBL to TBL ratio was statistically greater in Endo-TLIF (91%) than in Mis-TLIF (87%). Concerning clinical outcomes, VAS-Back, VAS-Leg, ODI, JOA, and Endo-TLIF demonstrated greater improvement rates than Mis-TLIF one week post-operatively. However, at the final follow-up, VAS-Back, VAS-Leg, ODI, and JOA scores all demonstrated a trend toward sustained improvement, with no statistically significant between-procedure difference. There were no statistically significant between-procedure differences in disease type, surgical segment, and complication or fusion rates. CONCLUSION: Endo-TLIF significantly reduced HBL, VBL, and TBL compared to Mis-TLIF and improved short-term clinical outcomes; however, long-term clinical outcomes and fusion rates remained comparable between the two groups, as did the incidence of peri-operative complications.

Hot-melt extrusion (HME) technology was employed to improve water dispersibility of phytosterol (P) using glycerol (G), lecithin (L), and gum arabic (A) as emulsifiers and stabilizers. The structural properties and water dispersibility of HME products were investigated. In contrast to physical mixtures, better water dispersibility and storage stability were observed for HME products, especially P:L:G:A extrudate. These improvements may be mainly associated with decreased crystallinity of phytosterol due to the occurrence of co-crystallization of phytosterol with glycerol during HME process, as confirmed by DSC and XRD data. In addition, HME-induced lecithin-arabic gum reaction products effectively stabilize phytosterol microparticle in aqueous dispersion by providing a steric hindrance. These results suggest that HME could be an effectively and potentially solvent-free technique to produce water-dispersible phytosterol on a large scale.

Timely analysis of the laboratory characteristics associated with 2019 novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) can assist with clinical diagnosis and prognosis. This study is a collection of clinical data from 54 hospitalized adult patients diagnosed with COVID-19 in the Zhongfa Xincheng district of China at Tongji Hospital of Huazhong University of Science and Technology from January 28, 2020 to February 11, 2020. The average age of the patients was 61.8 ± 14.5 years, and the predominant age group was 50-79. The proportion of critical-type patients with comorbidities was higher than that of severe-type patients. Lymphocyte counts were significantly reduced in routine bloodwork for all patients, but significantly lower in critical-type patients than that in severe-type patients. Prolongation of prothrombin times (PT) and elevation of fibrinogen degradation products (FDPs) and D-dimers (D-Ds) were detected in coagulation function tests, and more significant changes were observed in critical-type patients compared to severe-type patients. Serum ferritin levels were sensitive to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection but could not be used for disease assessment. In addition, levels of two inflammatory factors, soluble interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2R) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were significantly increased in all patients, but higher in critical-type patients than in severe-type patients. Moreover, kidney injury was the second-most common organ affected by COVID-19 followed by heart and liver. Kidney and heart injury were more severe in critical-type patients than in severe-type patients. All of the 31 severe-type patients recovered. Of the critical-type patients, six died and 17 recovered. The length of hospital stay for critical-type patients was significantly longer for severe-type patients. In summary, increased lymphocyte counts, prolonged PT, secondary increases in fibrinolytic activity and increases in sIL-2R and IL-6 are typical features of COVID-19 and are associated with disease severity.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is a serious global health problem, severely affecting the lives of sufferers and their families. An exceptionally hygienic home and reduced microbial exposure can aggravate the incidence of childhood asthma. METHODS: Specific-pathogen-free BALB/c mice were pre-treated with bacterial lysate (BL; 1 mg/kg) as a high microbial load maternal mouse model, and then, the offspring mice were established as an allergic airway disease (AAD) model. The expression levels of TLR2, TLR4, and HDAC9 in the mother's intestine and the offspring's lungs were detected. Relevant indicators of regulatory T cells (Tregs) were identified in the mother and offspring mice. The changes in the expression of Th1-, Th2-, Th9-, and Th17-related cytokines in the offspring mice were evaluated among different pre-treated groups. RESULTS: After augmenting the mothers' intestinal microbiota through oral BL gavage, the expression of TLR2 and TLR4 in the colon mucosa and colon lymphoid tissues was enhanced and that of HDAC9 in the colon mucosa was decreased, and the proportion of spleen Tregs was increased. The offspring showed similar changes in the AAD model compared with the offspring of the control-group mothers: TLR2 and TLR4 expression in the lungs and the proportion of spleen Tregs increased, HDAC9 expression in the lungs decreased, and AAD-induced airway pathologic characteristics were reversed; additionally, Th1/Th2 and Th9 imbalances were rectified. CONCLUSIONS: This study presents a new framework for the prevention of childhood asthma, elucidating the mechanism of regulating the mother's intestinal microbiome to protect the offspring's early asthma via animal experiments.

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) chirp waveform, which is composed of two or more successive identical linear frequency modulated sub pulses, is a newly proposed orthogonal waveform scheme for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems. However, according to the waveform model, there will be range ambiguity if the mapping width exceeds the maximum unambiguous width determined by the transmitted signal. This greatly limits its application in high-resolution wide-swath (HRWS) remote sensing. The traditional system divides the echoes by digital beam forming (DBF) to solve this problem, but the energy utilization rate is low. A MIMO-SAR system using simultaneous digital beam forming of both transceiver and receiver to avoid range ambiguity is designed in this paper. Compared with traditional system, the novel system designed in this paper obtain higher energy utilization and waveform orthogonality.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) diagnostics can be useful for diagnosing or confirming miRNA abundance and are used in screening tests and to assess changes in miRNAs in vivo. At present, the use of traditional nucleic acid amplification assays to detect miRNAs has been limited in laboratory environment because of the time, equipment, and technical expertise required to perform these assays. A specialized, rapid affordable miRNA detection system is necessary when there are limited resources or point-of-care testing needs. We designed a portable and affordable fluorescence-based miRNA detection system based on isothermal signal amplification technology, using SYBR Green II as a fluorescent dye. To reduce costs, we chose LED as a light source and designed the corresponding optical path for LED. The portable detection system shows results consistent with those by real-time PCR, and can be used to detect miR-183 with a limit of detection of approximately 2 fmol. We used the system to detect miR-183 in tissues and blood from patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The results from the portable detection device were compared with those from clinical trials and indicated that the miR-183 fluorescence signal could successfully identify HCC and provide information related to cancer progression.

Tomographic SAR (TomoSAR) is a remote sensing technique that extends the conventional two-dimensional (2-D) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging principle to three-dimensional (3-D) imaging. It produces 3-D point clouds with unavoidable noise that seriously deteriorates the quality of 3-D imaging and the reconstruction of buildings over urban areas. However, existing methods for TomoSAR point cloud processing notably rely on data segmentation, which influences the processing efficiency and denoising performance to a large extent. Inspired by regression analysis, in this paper, we propose an automatic method using neural networks to regularize the 3-D building structures from TomoSAR point clouds. By changing the point heights, the surface points of a building are refined. The method has commendable performance on smoothening the building surface, and keeps a precise preservation of the building structure. Due to the regression mechanism, the method works in a high automation level, which avoids data segmentation and complex parameter adjustment. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method to denoise and regularize TomoSAR point clouds for urban buildings.

BACKGROUND: Aspergillus flavus is a major pollutant in moldy peanuts, and it has a large influence on the taste of food. The secondary metabolites of Aspergillus flavus, including aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and aflatoxin B2 (AFB2), are highly toxic and can expose humans to high risk. The total mold count (TMC) is an important index to determine the contamination degree and hygiene quality of peanut. RESULTS: Quantitative calibration models were established based on full-band wavelengths and characteristic wavelengths, combined with chemometric methods, to explore the feasibility of the use of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) for rapid detection of the TMC in peanuts. The successive projection algorithm (SPA) and elimination of uninformative variables (UVE) algorithms were used to extract the characteristic wavelengths. In comparison, the model built by original spectrum, selected with the UVE algorithm, gave the best result, with a correlation coefficient in a prediction set (RP ) of 0.9577, a root mean square error for the prediction set (RMSEP) of 0.2336 Log CFU/g, and a residual predictive deviation (RPD) of 3.5041. CONCLUSIONS: The results showed that NIRS is a rapid, practicable method for the quantitative detection of peanut Aspergillus flavus contamination. It is a promising method for detecting moldy peanuts and increasing peanut safety. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Tumour protein p53-inducible nuclear protein 1 (TP53INP1) is a tumour suppressor associated with malignant tumour metastasis. Vasculogenic mimicry (VM) is a new tumour vascular supply pattern that significantly influences tumour metastasis and contributes to a poor prognosis. However, the molecular mechanism of the relationship between TP53INP1 and breast cancer VM formation is unknown. Here, we explored the underlying mechanism by which TP53INP1 regulates VM formation in vitro and in vivo. High TP53INP1 expression was not only negatively correlated with a poor prognosis but also had a negative relationship with VE-cadherin, HIF-1α and Snail expression. TP53INP1 overexpression inhibited breast cancer invasion, migration, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and VM formation; conversely, TP53INP1 down-regulation promoted these processes in vitro by functional experiments and Western blot analysis. We established a hypoxia model induced by CoCl2 and assessed the effects of TP53INP1 on hypoxia-induced EMT and VM formation. In addition, we confirmed that a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated signalling pathway participated in TP53INP1-mediated VM formation. Together, our results show that TP53INP1 inhibits hypoxia-induced EMT and VM formation via the ROS/GSK-3ß/Snail pathway in breast cancer, which offers new insights into breast cancer clinical therapy.

Vasculogenic mimicry (VM) refers to the unique capability of aggressive tumor cells to mimic the pattern of embryonic vasculogenic networks. Cancer stem cells (CSC) represent a subpopulation of tumor cells endowed with the capacity for self-renewal and multilineage differentiation. Previous studies have indicated that CSC may participate in the formation of VM. With the advance of high-resolution microarrays and massively parallel sequencing technology, long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are suggested to play a critical role in tumorigenesis and, in particular, the development of human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Currently, no definitive relationship between lncRNA and VM formation has been described. In the current study, we demonstrated that expression of the lncRNA, n339260, is associated with CSC phenotype in HCC, and n339260 level correlated with VM, metastasis, and shorter survival time in an animal model. Overexpression of n339260 in HepG2 cells was associated with a significant increase in CSC. Additionally, the appearance of VM and vascular endothelial (VE)-cadherin, a molecular marker of VM, was also induced by n339260 overexpression. Using a short hairpin RNA approach, n339260 was silenced in tumor cells, and knockdown of n339260 was associated with reduced VM and CSC. The results of this study indicate that n339260 promotes VM, possibly by the development of CSC. The related molecular pathways may be used as novel therapeutic targets for the inhibition of HCC angiogenesis and metastasis.

Oligonucleotides were screened for strongly silver-stained repetitive sequences. An 'AG'-clustered purine sequence showed strong staining, and the staining density can be compromised by disrupting the continuity of the 'AG'-clustered sequence. The staining-favored sequence was then employed in rolling circle amplification (RCA) for its product detection. A tube-staining method was developed for convenient and visual RCA assay. Moreover, by introducing GalR into RCA, d-galactose was detected by RCA tube-staining with naked eyes without any equipment. About 10 mM d-galactose can be easily identified, and the detection of d-galactose was specific in comparison with that of several other monosaccharides.

OBJECTIVE: To assess if active commuting with an electrically assisted bicycle (e-bike) during a 4-week period can induce increases in cardiorespiratory fitness measured as peak oxygen uptake (V[Combining Dot Above]O2peak) in untrained, overweight individuals, and if these changes are comparable with those induced by a conventional bicycle. DESIGN: Four-week randomized pilot study. SETTING: Controlled laboratory. PARTICIPANTS: Thirty-two volunteers (28 men) participated. Seventeen {median age 37 years [interquartile range (IQR) 34, 45], median body mass index [BMI] 29 kg/m [IQR 27, 31]} were randomized to the E-Bike group and 15 [median age 43 years (IQR 38, 45), median BMI 28 kg/m (IQR 26, 29)] to the Bike group. INTERVENTIONS: Participants in both groups were instructed to use the bicycle allocated to them (e-bike or conventional bicycle) for an active commute to work in the Basel (Switzerland) area at a self-chosen speed on at least 3 days per week during the 4-week intervention period. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: V[Combining Dot Above]O2peak was assessed before and after the intervention in an all-out exercise test on a bicycle ergometer. RESULTS: V[Combining Dot Above]O2peak increased by an average of 3.6 mL/(kg·min) [SD 3.6 mL/(kg·min)] in the E-Bike group and by 2.2 mL/(kg·min) [SD 3.5 mL/(kg·min)] in the Bike group, with an adjusted difference between the 2 groups of 1.4 mL/(kg·min) [95% confidence interval, -1.4-4.1; P = 0.327]. CONCLUSIONS: E-bikes may have the potential to improve cardiorespiratory fitness similar to conventional bicycles despite the available power assist, as they enable higher biking speeds and greater elevation gain.
