RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Quality of life (QoL) has been suggested as an indicator of outcomes in autistic adults. Factors associated with QoL in autistic individuals remain unclear. This study aims to examine the subjective QoL for autistic adults in Taiwan and investigate the determinants for different domains of QoL. METHODS: The study comprised 90 autistic adults (aged 26.9, SD 7.3; males, 80.9%). We used Taiwanese version of World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF to measure QoL. Four domains of QoL were compared with 61 non-autistic controls, including physical, psychological, social, and environment. To identify the correlates of QoL domains, we assessed IQ, personality trait, family support, anxiety/depressive symptoms, autistic severity, and sensory symptoms by various questionnaires, and assessed their association with QoL by correlation analyses and model selection. RESULTS: Our results showed that autistic adults reported lower QoL on the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL)-BREF across all domains. QoL was significantly associated with autistic symptom severity, harm avoidance, family support, sensory symptoms, anxiety, and depression, but not intelligence. Model selections revealed male sex, poor paternal support, autism severity, depression, anxiety, and sensory symptoms were associated with specific QoL domains. CONCLUSION: Findings supported lower QoL in autistic adults. Modifying the QoL correlates may improve life quality in autistic adults. Furthermore, our findings revealed the importance of sensory symptoms and paternal support in QoL of autistic adults, which was a novel finding in this population.

RESUMO

Organic molecules having emission in the NIR(II) region are emergent and receiving enormous attention. Unfortunately, attaining accountable organic emission intensity around the NIR(II) region is hampered by the dominant internal conversion operated by the energy gap law, where the emission energy gap and the associated internal reorganization energy λint play key roles. Up to the current stage, the majority of the reported organic NIR(II) emitters belong to those polymethines terminated by two symmetric chromophores. Such a design has proved to have a small λint that greatly suppresses the internal conversion. However, the imposition of symmetric chromophores is stringent, limiting further development of organic NIR(II) dyes in diversity and versatility. Here, we propose a new concept where as far as the emissive state of the any asymmetric polymethines contains more or less equally transition density between two terminated chromophores, λint can be as small as that of the symmetric polymethines. To prove the concept, we synthesize a series of new polymethines terminated by xanthen-9-yl-benzoic acid and 2,4-diphenylthiopyrylium derivatives, yielding AJBF1112 and AEBF1119 that reveal emission peak wavelength at 1112 and 1119 nm, respectively. The quantum yield is higher than all synthesized symmetric polymethines of 2,4-diphenylthiopyrylium derivatives (SC1162, 1182, 1185, and 1230) in this study. λint were calculated to be as small as 6.2 and 7.3 kcal/mol for AJBF1112 and AEBF1119, respectively, proving the concept. AEBF1119 was further prepared as a polymer dot to demonstrate its in vitro specific cellular imaging and in vivo tumor/bone targeting in the NIR(II) region.

RESUMO

Under open-vessel atmosphere conditions, a one-pot easy-to-operate method for the construction of diverse sulfonyl dibenzosuberdiones is developed via In(OTf)3-promoted tandem double Friedel-Crafts reactions of oxygenated arylacetic acids with ß-arylvinyl sulfones. A plausible mechanism is proposed and discussed in detail. This protocol allows for highly effective sequential intermolecular Michael addition, intramolecular ring-closure and α-benzylic oxidation via the formation of two carbon-carbon single (C-C) bonds and one carbon-oxygen double (CO) bond.

RESUMO

Plant bacterial pathogens transmitted by hemipteran vectors pose a large threat to the agricultural industry worldwide. Although virus-vector relationships have been widely investigated, a significant gap exists in our understanding of the molecular interactions between circulative bacteria and their insect vectors, mainly leafhoppers and psyllids. In this review, we will describe how these bacterial pathogens adhere, invade, and proliferate inside their insect vectors. We will also highlight the different transmission routes and molecular factors of phloem-limited bacteria that maintain an effective relationship with the insect host. Understanding the pathogen-vector relationship at the molecular level will help in the management of vector-borne bacterial diseases.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: In aural rehabilitation, speech bananas are often used as a counseling tool to visually indicate one's auditory access to speech sounds. We constructed a Chinese-based speech banana to provide Chinese-speaking users with a more appropriate distribution of Chinese speech sounds on an audiogram. METHOD: The location of each phoneme was defined by its frequency and intensity. To evaluate the clinical validity of the proposed speech banana, 15 Chinese-speaking hearing aid users were recruited; the predictability of the present speech banana was examined in terms of sensitivity and specificity based on their aided sound-field narrow-band noise thresholds and speech recognition thresholds. RESULTS: The data revealed high specificity rates of 94.2% below 8,000 Hz and high sensitivity of 96.8% above 8,000 Hz. Specificity measures the percentage of perceptible sounds correctly identified as such by the Chinese speech banana (CSB); sensitivity measures the percentage of imperceptible sounds that are correctly identified as such by the CSB. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: The CSB represents a potentially valid counseling tool to identify phonemes that have poor perceptual quality and indicate auditory access gaps.

RESUMO

'Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus' (CLas), the devastating pathogen related to Huanglongbing (HLB), is a phloem-limited, fastidious, insect-borne bacterium. Rapid spread of HLB disease relies on CLas-efficient propagation in the vector, the Asian citrus psyllid Diaphorina citri, in a circulative manner. Understanding the intracellular lifecycle of CLas in psyllid midgut, the major organ for CLas transmission, is fundamental to improving current management strategies. Using a microscopic approach within CLas-infected insect midgut, we observed the entry of CLas into gut cells inside vesicles, termed Liberibacter-containing vacuoles (LCVs), by endocytosis. Endocytosis is followed by the formation of endoplasmic reticulum-related and replication permissive vacuoles (rLCVs). Additionally, we observed the formation of double membrane autophagosome-like structure, termed autophagy-related vacuole (aLCV). Vesicles containing CLas egress from aLCV and fuse with the cell membrane. Immunolocalization studies showed that CLas uses endocytosis- and exocytosis-like mechanisms that mediates bacterial invasion and egress. Upregulation of autophagy-related genes indicated subversion of host autophagy by CLas in psyllid vector to promote infection. These results indicate that CLas interacts with host cellular machineries to undergo a multistage intracellular cycle through endocytic, secretory, autophagic, and exocytic pathways via complex machineries. Potential tactics for HLB control can be made depending on further investigations on the knowledge of the molecular mechanisms of CLas intracellular cycle.

RESUMO

In this paper, using automated optical inspection equipment and a thermal imager, the position and the temperature of the heat source or measured object can effectively be grasped. The high-resolution depth camera is with the stereo vision distance measurement and the low-resolution thermal imager is with the long-wave infrared measurement. Based on Planck's black body radiation law and Stefan-Boltzmann law, the binocular stereo calibration of the two cameras was calculated. In order to improve the measured temperature error at different distances, equipped with Intel Real Sense Depth Camera D435, a compensator is proposed to ensure that the measured temperature of the heat source is correct and accurate. From the results, it can be clearly seen that the actual measured temperature at each distance is proportional to the temperature of the thermal image vanadium oxide, while the actual measured temperature is inversely proportional to the distance of the test object. By the proposed compensation function, the compensation temperature at varying vanadium oxide temperatures can be obtained. The errors between the average temperature at each distance and the constant temperature of the test object at 39 °C are all less than 0.1%.

RESUMO

Fingerprints are the most common personal identification feature and key evidence for crime scene investigators. The prediction of fingerprints features include gender, height range (tall or short), left or right hand, and finger position can effectively narrow down the list of suspects, increase the speed of comparison, and greatly improve the effectiveness of criminal investigations. In this study, we used three commonly used CNNs (VGG16, Inception-v3, and Resnet50) to perform biometric prediction on 1000 samples, and the results showed that VGG16 achieved the highest accuracy in identifying gender (79.2%), left- and right-hand fingerprints (94.4%), finger position (84.8%), and height range (69.8%, using the ring finger of male participants). In addition, we visualized the CNN classification basis by the Grad-CAM technique and compared the results with those predicted by experts and found that the CNN model outperformed experts in terms of classification accuracy and speed, and provided good reference for fingerprints that were difficult to determine manually.

RESUMO

In this paper, a concise, open-vessel synthesis of 1-arylisoquinolines is described via HCl-mediated intermolecular cyclocondensation of oxygenated arylacetic acids with arylaldehydes in the presence of NH2OH and alcoholic solvents under mild and one-pot reaction conditions. A plausible mechanism is proposed and discussed herein. In the overall reaction process, only water was generated as the byproduct. Various environmentally friendly reaction conditions are investigated for convenient transformation via the (4C + 1C + 1N) annulation. This protocol provides a highly effective ring closure via the formations of one carbon-carbon (C-C) bond, two carbon-nitrogen (C-N) bonds and one carbon-oxygen (C-O) bond.

RESUMO

Bi(OTf)3 (bismuth triflate)-mediated one-pot tandem annulation of oxygenated 1-aryl isochroman-3-ones with oxygenated arenes provides polyoxygenated homotriptycenes in moderate to good yields in MeNO2 at reflux (101 °C) for 10 h under an air atmosphere and easy-operational conditions via intermolecular and intramolecular Friedel-Crafts type procedures. A plausible mechanism is proposed and discussed. This protocol provides a highly effective ring-closure via three carbon-carbon (C-C) bond formations.

RESUMO

The Every Student Succeeds Act supports personalized learning (PL) to close achievement gaps of diverse K-12 learners in the United States. Implementing PL into a classroom entails a paradigm change of the educational system. However, it is demanding to transform traditional practice into a personalized one under the pressure of the annual standardized testing while it is unclear which PL approaches are more likely to result in better academic outcomes than others. Using national survey data of ELA teachers in identified learner-centered schools, this study compared high and low-performing learner-centered schools (determined by their standardized test results) in terms of their use of five PL features (personalized learning plan, competency-based student progress, criterion-referenced assessment, project- or problem-based learning, and multi-year mentoring) and their use of technology for the four functions of planning, learning, assessment, and recordkeeping. Generally, teachers in high-performing schools implemented PL more thoroughly and utilized technology for more functions than those in low-performing schools. Teachers in high-performing schools more frequently considered career goals when creating personal learning plans, shared the project outcomes with the community, and assessed non-academic outcomes. They stayed longer with the same students and developed close relationships with more students. Also, they more frequently used technology for sharing resources and reported having a more powerful technology system than those in low-performing schools. This study informs educators, administrators, and researchers of which PL approaches and technology uses are more likely to result in better academic outcomes measured by standardized assessments.

RESUMO

We report two novel RNA viruses from yellow crazy ants, (Anoplolepis gracilipes) detected using next-generation sequencing. The complete genome sequences of the two viruses were 10,662 and 8,238 nucleotides in length, respectively, with both possessing two open reading frames with three conserved protein domains. The genome organization is characteristic of members of the genus Triatovirus in the family Dicistroviridae. The two novel viruses were tentatively named "Anoplolepis gracilipes virus 1" and "Anoplolepis gracilipes virus 2" (AgrV-1 and AgrV-2). Phylogenetic analyses based on amino acid sequences of the non-structural polyprotein (ORF1) suggest that the two viruses are triatovirus-like viruses. This is the first report on the discovery of novel triatovirus-like viruses in yellow crazy ants with a description of their genome structure (two ORFs and conserved domains of RNA helicase, RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, and capsid protein), complete sequences, and viral prevalence across the Asia-Pacific region.

RESUMO

Low-coordinate ions possess exciting magnetic, optical, and reactive properties that may afford novel material physics. Hence, it is important to test both synthetic methods for realizing extended solids of such ions as well as the properties of smaller molecular fragments of envisioned future materials. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of a new dinuclear Fe species, [{(Me3Si2)2N}Fe{µ-p-{HN(SiMe3)}(C6Me4){N(SiMe3)}}2Fe{N(SiMe3)2}] (1), formed through a transamination reaction between [Fe{N(SiMe3)2}2]2 and the bulky diamine p-{HN(SiMe3)}2(C6Me4) (L). The Fe centers of this dimer assume a pseudo-trigonal-planar, three-coordinate conformation in 1, bridged by two aromatic diamines. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, and Mössbauer spectroscopy enable the assignment of both Fe centers as the 2+ oxidation state. Magnetic studies show that 1 displays a weak antiferromagnetic exchange interaction (J = -2.33 cm-1) and moderate zero-field splitting (D = 7.51 cm-1). Importantly, these studies demonstrate the viability of using transamination to bridge high-spin low-coordinate metal ions and hence the technique may, in the future, produce new extended structures.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic evaluation plays an indispensable role in medical treatments designed to prevent, diagnose, and cure gastrointestinal disease. Surveillance culture monitoring may be useful in monitoring the outcome of reprocessing. PURPOSE: In this project, microbiologic surveillance cultures were employed to improve the quality of flexible endoscope disinfection. RESOLUTION: This project, implemented from February 1st, 2018 to February 28th, 2019, used several approaches to improve the positive culture rate. We redesigned and implemented the standard operating procedures for endoscope reprocessing, established an in-service training course, provided education materials on reprocessing, and installed a storage cabinet that custom-built to accommodate the endoscope. RESULTS: The positive culture rate was reduced from 5.8% to 0%. CONCLUSIONS: Endoscopy culturing is a useful method to assess the effectiveness of standard reprocessing procedures. The development of guidelines and skill practices should follow current, evidence-based practice and infection prevention principles, and related documents should be organized. We suggest regularly deploying quality-improvement techniques to improve performance and service delivery.

RESUMO

Nickel plays an important role in areas as diverse as metallurgy, magnetism and biology as well as in chemical applications such as the catalytic transformation of organic substrates. Despite nickel's importance, the investigation of its compounds in various oxidation states remains uneven and those in the +1 oxidation are less common than those in the neighboring 0 and +2 oxidation states. Nonetheless, in recent years, the volume of work on Ni(i) complexes has increased to the extent that they can be no longer regarded as rare. This review focuses on the syntheses and structures of Ni(i) complexes and shows that they display a range of structures, reactivity and magnetic behavior that places them in the forefront of current nickel chemistry research.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) have a better risk benefit profile in Asian patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Whether treatment effects could be modified by drug class and dependency on renal elimination of studied agents has not yet been explored. METHODS: We searched PubMed, CENTRAL, and CINAHL databases through November 2016 for phase III randomized controlled trials comparing DOACs with warfarin in patients with AF. Efficacy and safety outcomes were pooled according to drug class and dependency on renal elimination of DOACs and were compared with the Mantel-Haenszel fixed-effects model. Effect differences were assessed with Bucher's indirect comparisons using common estimates, once heterogeneity was low, and with the Bayesian method. RESULTS: Among 6496 Asian patients from 6 trials, both direct thrombin inhibitors and factor Xa inhibitors, compared with warfarin, were associated with lower risks of stroke or systemic embolism and major bleeding (risk ratio [95% confidence interval], 0.51 [0.33-0.78], 0.74 ([0.58-0.96], 0.60 [0.41-0.86], and 0.59 [0.47-0.76], respectively). There was no between-group difference in direct thrombin inhibitors and factor Xa inhibitors or in DOACs with renal elimination less than 50% and 50% or greater (all I2 < 25% and interaction P > .05). Indirect comparisons within strata of drug class and dependency on renal elimination showed no preferential effect of any given regimen over another. There was no difference in effects on ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, intracranial hemorrhage, myocardial infarction, and all-cause mortality between DOACs stratified by pharmacologic characteristics. CONCLUSIONS: DOACs, as a therapeutic class, outperform warfarin in efficacy and safety in Asian patients with AF.

RESUMO

The binding constants of several monodentate Lewis bases (L) having different donor atoms [L = tetrahydrofuran (THF), tetrahydrothiophene (THT), pyridine, 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP), PMe3, PCy3, and 1,3-bis(1,3,5-trimethylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (IMes)] to the linear two-coordinate bis(amido) transition-metal complexes, M{N(SiMe3)Dipp}2 [M = Fe (1), Co (2), and Ni (3)] were determined by electronic absorption spectroscopy. In addition, 1H NMR spectroscopy was used to study the complexation of M{N(SiMe3)Dipp}2 by THF. The binding constants of the less bulky amido complexes [M{N(SiMe3)2}2]2 (M = Fe or Co; the nickel species is unstable) were also measured and found to bind THF 102-103 times more strongly than M{N(SiMe3)Dipp}2. Furthermore, unlike the corresponding -N(SiMe3)Dipp complexes, where the iron species are more strongly complexed than those of cobalt, the --N(SiMe3)2 species [Co{N(SiMe3)2}2]2 displayed a higher binding constant to THF than [Fe{N(SiMe3)2}2]2, which is in agreement with the stronger association of the [Co{N(SiMe3)2}2]2 dimer in comparison to that of its iron analogue. The binding strengths of the ligands to 1-3 were found to be in the order of DMAP > pyridine > PMe3 > PCy3 ≈ IMes > THF > THT, and those of the respective metals were in the order of Fe > Co > Ni.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To present a rare case of serous degeneration of bone marrow which resembles primary spinal tumor or bony metastasis to spine. Serous degeneration of bone marrow or gelatinous marrow transformation is a rare disease characterized by focal marrow hypoplasia, fat atrophy, and accumulation of extracellular mucopolysaccharides abundant in hyaluronic acid. Few literature was reviewed and few clinical case was presented. METHODS: Two cases of serous marrow transformation were reported. RESULTS: In the first case, a 29-year-old man suffered from severe left buttock pain. Bone metastasis was impressed in radiology examinations. Percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy was performed along with bone biopsy. In the second case, a 49-year-old man presented lower back pain with radiation to bilateral lower legs. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a water-like signal lesion in sacrum. Serous marrow transformation was confirmed pathologically in both cases. CONCLUSION: To the best of our knowledge, a case of serous degeneration of bone marrow resembling malignancy has not been reported in the literature. In this report, two cases demonstrate serous transformation of bone marrow mimics spinal tumor.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) have a half-life of around 12 h. We aimed to clarify if there was any effect modification by dosing (once- or twice-daily) regimens in Asian patients. METHODS: Phase III randomized controlled trials of NOACs compared with warfarin in Asian patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) were identified and extracted from PubMed, CENTRAL, and CINAHL databases through November 2016. Outcomes were pooled by dosing regimens with the Mantel-Haenszel fixed-effects model. The risk ratio (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated. Effect differences between once- and twice-daily NOACs were assessed with Bucher indirect comparisons using common estimates, once heterogeneity was low, and with the Bayesian method. RESULTS: From 6 trials, there was no effect modification by dosing regimens in the risk of stroke or systemic embolism across ethnicities (all interaction P > 0.05). Both dosing regimens were associated with a greater reduction in the risk of major bleeding in Asian patients (RR, 0.63 (95% CI, 0.47-0.85) and 0.57 (95% CI, 0.43-0.75), for once- and twice-daily NOACs, respectively). In Asian patients, risks of hemorrhagic stroke and intracranial hemorrhage were lower with once- (RR, 0.41 (95% CI, 0.21-0.80) and 0.29 (95% CI, 0.16-0.53)) and twice-daily NOACs (RR, 0.25 (95% CI, 0.12-0.51) and 0.38 (95% CI, 0.23-0.65)), compared with warfarin. There was no effect difference favoring any of NOAC regimens evaluated by Bucher and Bayesian methods. CONCLUSION: In Asian patients with AF, NOACs, regardless of dosing regimens, have a similar feature of preserved efficacy with improved safety compared with warfarin.
