RESUMO

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma stands as a notably aggressive malignancy within the digestive system. In cases of early esophageal cancer without lymph node metastasis, endoscopic surgical resection offers a viable alternative, often resulting in improved patient quality of life. However, the paucity of methods to preoperatively ascertain lymph node involvement complicates surgical planning. SOX4 gene was previously found to be highly associated with invasive metastasis in our work through single-cell RNA sequencing on 5 paired tumor/peritumor tissues. This research included the collection of 124 tissue samples from 106 patients (106 tumor and 18 lymph node specimens). Samples were methodically arranged into a tissue microarray and treated with immunohistochemical staining. Statistical analysis was conducted to assess the relationship between them. In the univariate analysis, 3 factors were identified as statistically significant in relation to lymph node metastasis: T category (P = .014), vascular invasion (P < .001), and SOX4 intensity (P = .001). Additionally, when evaluating SOX4 intensity alongside other clinical indicators, SOX4 was shown to independently influence lymph node metastasis. Further, the multivariate analysis revealed that vascular invasion (P < .001) and SOX4 intensity (P = .003) were significantly associated with lymph node metastasis, exhibiting hazard ratios of 10.174 and 7.142, respectively. The results of our study indicate that both SOX4 expression and vascular invasion serve as predictors of lymph node metastasis in patients diagnosed with category T1 esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, underscoring the potential utility of SOX4 in prognostic evaluations.

RESUMO

Patients suffering from hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury (HIRI) frequently exhibit postoperative cognitive deficits. Our previous observations have emphasized the diurnal variation in hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury-induced cognitive impairment, in which gut microbiota-associated hippocampal lipid metabolism plays an important role. Herein, we further investigated the molecular mechanisms involved in the process. Hepatic ischemia-reperfusion surgery was performed under morning (ZT0, 08:00) and evening (ZT12, 20:00). Fecal microbiota transplantation was used to associate HIRI model with pseudo-germ-free mice. The novel object recognition test and Y-maze test were used to assess cognitive function. 16S rRNA gene sequencing and analysis were used for microbial analysis. Western blotting was used for hippocampal protein analysis. Compared with the ZT0-HIRI group, ZT12-HIRI mice showed learning and short term memory impairment, accompanied by down-regulated expression of hippocampal CB1R, but not CB2R. Both gut microbiota composition and microbiota metabolites were significantly different in ZT12-HIRI mice compared with ZT0-HIRI. Fecal microbiota transplantation from the ZT12-HIRI was demonstrated to induce cognitive impairment behavior and down-regulated hippocampal CB1R and ß-arrestin1. Intraperitoneal administration of CB1R inhibitor AM251 (1 mg/kg) down-regulated hippocampal CB1R and caused cognitive impairment in ZT0-HIRI mice. And intraperitoneal administration of CB1R agonist WIN 55,212-2 (1 mg/kg) up-regulated hippocampal CB1R and improved cognitive impairment in ZT12-HIRI mice. In summary, the results suggest that gut microbiota may regulate the diurnal variation of HIRI-induced cognitive function by interfering with hippocampal CB1R.

RESUMO

Corneal neovascularization (CNV) is one of the common blinding factors worldwide, leading to reduced vision or even blindness. However, current treatments such as surgical intervention and anti-VEGF agent therapy still have some shortcomings or evoke some adverse effects. Recently, SU6668, an inhibitor targeting angiogenic tyrosine kinases, has demonstrated growth inhibition of neovascularization. But the hydrophobicity and low ocular bioavailability limit its application in cornea. Hereby, we proposed the preparation of SU6668 pure nanoparticles (NanoSU6668; size ~135 nm) using a super-stable pure-nanomedicine formulation technology (SPFT), which possessed uniform particle size and excellent aqueous dispersion at 1 mg/mL. Furthermore, mesenchymal stem cell membrane vesicle (MSCm) was coated on the surface of NanoSU6668, and then conjugated with TAT cell penetrating peptide, preparing multifunctional TAT-MSCm@NanoSU6668 (T-MNS). The T-MNS at a concentration of 200 µg/mL was treated for CNV via eye drops, and accumulated in blood vessels with a high targeting performance, resulting in elimination of blood vessels and recovery of cornea transparency after 4 days of treatment. Meanwhile, drug safety test confirmed that T-MNS did not cause any damage to cornea, retina and other eye tissues. In conclusion, the T-MNS eye drop had the potential to treat CNV effectively and safely in a low dosing frequency, which broke new ground for CNV theranostics.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Depression is a prevalent issue among older adults, affecting their quality of life and overall well-being. Exercise is an effective means of relieving depressive symptoms in older adults, but the optimal dose for different exercise types remains unclear. As such, the aim of this meta-analysis was to examine the dose-response relationship between overall and specific types of exercise with depression symptoms in older adults. METHODS: This systematic review and network meta-analysis included a search of PubMed, Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, Cochrane library, and Web of Science for randomized controlled trials of exercise in older adults with depression symptoms from inception to 15 July 2023. Comprehensive data extraction covered dose, treatment regimen, demographics and study duration. Dosage metrics, encompassing METs-min/week, were scrutinized in correlation with the Minimal Clinically Importance Difference (MCID). RESULTS: A total of 47 studies involving 2895 participants and 7 kinds of exercise were included in the review. Without considering the dose, the results of our network meta-analysis indicated that Walking was the most effective in alleviating depression in older adults, in addition to Aerobic exercise (AE), Yoga, Qigong, Resistance training (RT), and Tai Chi (TC), which were equally effective. However, the results of the dose-response analysis found that Aerobic exercise was most effective at a dose of 1000 METs-min/week. It is noteworthy that Walking is significantly effective in alleviating depressive symptoms in older adults at very low doses. In terms of clinical benefits, we found that overall exercise doses in the range of 600 ~ 970 METs-min/week were clinically effective. Considering the specific types of exercise, Aerobic exercise, Resistance training, Walking, and Yoga were found to be effective at doses ranging from 820 ~ 1000 METs-min/week, 520 ~ 1000 METs-min/week, 650 ~ 1000 METs-min/week, 680 ~ 1000 METs-min/week, respectively. At the same time, we found that when the age exceeded 81 years, even when participating in exercise, it did not achieve the effect of alleviating depressive symptoms in older adults. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, including Walking, AE, Yoga, Qigong, RT, and TC, effectively alleviate depressive symptoms in older adults. Furthermore, we established statistically and clinically significant threshold doses for various exercise types. Early initiation of exercise is beneficial, but its efficacy diminishes from the age of 80, and beyond 81, exercise no longer significantly alleviates depressive symptoms.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Peri-implant diseases, being the most common implant-related complications, significantly impact the normal functioning and longevity of implants. Experimental models play a crucial role in discovering potential therapeutic approaches and elucidating the mechanisms of disease progression in peri-implant diseases. This narrative review comprehensively examines animal models and common modeling methods employed in peri-implant disease research and innovatively summarizes the in vitro models of peri-implant diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Articles published between 2015 and 2023 were retrieved from PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, and Embase. All studies focusing on experimental models of peri-implant diseases were included and carefully evaluated. RESULTS: Various experimental models of peri-implantitis have different applications and advantages. The dog model is currently the most widely utilized animal model in peri-implant disease research, while rodent models have unique advantages in gene knockout and systemic disease induction. In vitro models of peri-implant diseases are also continuously evolving to meet different experimental purposes. CONCLUSIONS: The utilization of experimental models helps simplify experiments, save time and resources, and promote advances in peri-implant disease research. Animal models have been proven valuable in the early stages of drug development, while technological advancements have brought about more predictive and relevant in vitro models. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This review provides clear and comprehensive model selection strategies for researchers in the field of peri-implant diseases, thereby enhancing understanding of disease pathogenesis and providing possibilities for developing new treatment strategies.

RESUMO

BACKGROUNDS: Esophageal gastrointestinal stromal tumors (E-GISTs) are extremely rare and surgical resection is the recommended approach. However, surgical resection usually causes severe trauma that may result in significant postoperative morbidity. Endoscopic resection (ER) has developed rapidly in recent years and has been widely used in gastrointestinal lesions. Nevertheless, the feasibility and efficacy of ER in the management of E-GISTs are unknown. METHODS: Retrospective data were collected from January 2011 to December 2020 in a large tertiary center of China. Twenty-eight patients with E-GISTs treated by ER were included in the study. RESULTS: Of the 28 patients, there were 21 males and 7 females, with a median age of 55 years (40-70 years). The median tumor size was 15 mm (5-80 mm). The technical success rate was 100% (28/28), while the en bloc resection rate was 96.4% (27/28). The median operation time was 35 min (10-410 min). Sixteen (57.2%) tumors were categorized into very low risk group, six (21.4%) into low risk group, and six (21.4%) into high risk group. Pathologists carefully examined margins of each lesion. There were 11 lesions (39.3%) determined as R0 resection and 17 lesions (60.7%) as R1 resection with positive margins. The median hospital stay was 2 days (range, 1-8 days). One patient suffered from hydrothorax and required drainage, leading to a major adverse event rate of 3.6% (1/28). There was no conversion to surgery, and no death occurred within 30 days after the procedure. Imatinib was given to two patients after ER under multidisciplinary team surveillance. During follow-up (median of 54 months, 9-122 months), no recurrences or metastasis were observed. CONCLUSION: ER is safe and effective for E-GISTs and might become an optional choice in the future. Multicenter, prospective, large samples with long-term follow-up studies are still needed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There are few reports on the breeding of high-yielding tetramethylpyrazine (TTMP) strains in strong-flavor Daqu. In addition, studies on the mechanism of TTMP production in strains are mostly based on common physiological and biochemical indicators, and there is no report on RNA level. Therefore, in this study, a strain with high production of TTMP was screened out from strong-flavor liquor, and transcriptome sequencing analysis was performed to analyze its key metabolic pathways and key genes, and to infer the mechanism of TTMP production in the strain. RESULTS: In this study, a strain with a high yield of tetramethylpyrazine (TTMP) was screened out, and the yield was 29.83 µg mL-1 . The identified strain was Bacillus velezensis, which could increase the content of TTMP in liquor by about 88%. After transcriptome sequencing, a total of 1851 differentially expressed genes were screened, including 1055 up-regulated genes and 796 down-regulated genes. Three pathways related to the production of TTMP were identified by gene ontology (GO) annotation and COG annotation, including carbohydrate metabolism, cell movement and amino acid metabolism. The key genes of TTMP were analyzed, and the factors that might regulate the production of TTMP, such as the transfer of uracil phosphate ribose and glycosyltransferase, were obtained. CONCLUSIONS: A strain of B. velezensis with high TTMP production was screened and identified in strong-flavor Daqu for the first time. The yield of TTMP was 29.83 µg mL-1 , which increased the TTMP content in liquor by 88%. The key metabolic pathways of TTMP production in the strain were obtained: carbohydrate metabolism, cell movement and amino acid metabolism, and the key regulatory genes of each pathway were found, which complemented the gap in gene level in the production regulation of the strain, and provided a theoretical basis for the subsequent study of TTMP in liquor. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

Commercial masks have significant drawbacks, including low water vapor transmission efficiency and limited ability to inhibit harmful microorganisms, whereas in this contribution, a series of Janus microsphere membranes are developed with hierarchical structures by quenching and crystallizing 12-hydroxystearic acid and halicin layer-by-layer on a polypropylene non-woven fabric, laminating them with hydrophilic cotton fibers in a one-pot process, and further demonstrate the potential of this composite system as masks. Through further optimization, excellent superhydrophobic/superhydrophilic properties (contact angle 157.1°/0°), superior filtering effects (93.54% for PM2.5 and 98.35% for PM10 ), with a low-filtration resistance (57 Pa) and a quality factor of up to 0.072 Pa-1 are achieved, all better than that of commercial N95 masks. In addition, the membrane allows for the directional transport of water vapor from the inside out, increasing the water vapor transmission rate by more than 20% compared with the monolayer hydrophobic microsphere membrane. It also has a bactericidal capacity of over 99.9999% against Escherichia coli and is tested for robustness and stability in various extreme environments. This work may shed light on designing novel filter media with versatile functions, meanwhile, the materials can also be used in protective equipment against the new coronavirus.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Studies on the associations between ambient temperature and asthma hospitalizations are limited, and the results are controversial. We aimed to assess the short-term effects of ambient temperature on the risk of asthma hospitalizations and quantify the hospitalization burdens of asthma attributable to non-optimal temperature in adults in Beijing, China. METHODS: We collected daily asthma hospitalizations, meteorological factors and air quality data in Beijing from 2012 to 2015. We applied a time-stratified case-crossover design and fitted a distributed lag non-linear model with a conditional quasi-Poisson regression to explore the association between ambient temperature and adult asthma hospitalizations. The effect modifications of these associations by gender and age were assessed by stratified analyses. We also computed the attributable fractions and numbers with 95% empirical confidence intervals (eCI) of asthma hospitalizations due to extreme and moderate temperatures. RESULTS: From 2012 to 2015, we identified a total of 18,500 hospitalizations for asthma among adult residents in Beijing, China. Compared with the optimal temperature (22 °C), the cumulative relative risk (CRR) over lag 0-30 days was 2.32 with a 95% confidence interval (CI) of 1.57-3.42 for extreme cold corresponding to the 2.5th percentile (- 6.5 °C) of temperature distribution and 2.04 (95% CI 1.52-2.74) for extreme heat corresponding to the 97.5th percentile (29 °C) of temperature distribution. 29.1% (95% eCI 17.5-38.0%) of adult asthma hospitalizations was attributable to non-optimum temperatures. Moderate cold temperatures yielded most of the burdens, with an attributable fraction of 20.3% (95% eCI 9.1-28.7%). The temperature-related risks of asthma hospitalizations were more prominent in females and younger people (19-64 years old). CONCLUSIONS: There was a U-shaped association between ambient temperature and the risk of adult asthma hospitalizations in Beijing, China. Females and younger patients were more vulnerable to the effects of non-optimum temperatures. Most of the burden was attributable to moderate cold. Our findings may uncover the potential impact of climate changes on asthma exacerbations.

RESUMO

Glycosylation of proteins is known to be essential for changing biological activity and stability of glycoproteins on the cell surfaces and in body fluids. Delivering of homogeneous glycoproteins into the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and the Golgi apparatus would enable us to investigate the function of asparagine-linked (N-) glycans in the organelles. In this work, we designed and synthesized an intentionally glycosylated cholera toxin B-subunit (CTB) to be transported to the organelles of mammalian cells. The heptasaccharide, the intermediate structure of various complex-type N-glycans, was introduced to the CTB. The synthesized monomeric glycosyl-CTB successfully entered mammalian cells and was transported to the Golgi and the ER, suggesting the potential use of synthetic CTB to deliver and investigate the functions of homogeneous N-glycans in specific organelles of living cells.

RESUMO

A rod-shaped, Gram-stain-negative, aerobic and non-motile bacterium, designated strain Y4T, was isolated from an aquaculture farm in Xiamen, PR China. Strain Y4T had 94.8, 93.3 and 91.8 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Paremcibacter congregatus ZYLT, Emcibacter nanhaiensis HTCJW17T and Luteithermobacter gelatinilyticus MEBiC09520T, respectively. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain Y4T was 42.7 mol%. The average amino acid identity and percentage of conserved proteins values between strain Y4T and type strains of the family Emcibacteraceae were 57.9-58.6 % and 44.5-47.6 %, respectively. Optimal growth was observed at 28 °C, at pH 7.0 and with 2 % (w/v) NaCl. The novel strain Y4T required Ca2+, K+ and Mg2+ ions in addition to NaCl for growth. The dominant fatty acids of strain Y4T were summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω7c/C16 : 1 ω6c), summed feature 8 (C18 : 1 ω7c/C18 : 1 ω6c) and C14 : 0 2-OH. The polar lipid profile contained phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidyglycerol, three unidentified aminolipids, four unidentified aminophospholipids and two unidentified lipids. Cells contained exclusively ubiquinone Q-10. On the basis of the polyphasic analysis, strain Y4T (=MCCC 1K06278T=KCTC 82926T) is considered to represent a novel species in a novel genus of the family Emcibacteraceae, for which the name Pseudemcibacter aquimaris gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Developments of endoscopic techniques brought the possibility of endoscopic resection for gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) of larger sizes. We aim to compare safety and short-term outcomes between endoscopic and laparoscopic resections of gastric GISTs with a diameter of 2-5 cm. METHODS: This is a single-center, retrospective cohort study. The clinical data, perioperative conditions, and the adverse events of patients who underwent endoscopic or laparoscopic resection for gastric GIST of 2-5 cm in Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, from January 2016 to December 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: A total of 346 patients were reviewed; 12 patients who failed to accomplish the planned procedure were excluded; 182 underwent laparoscopic resection; and 152 underwent endoscopic resection. Significant differences exist in the tumor size between the laparoscopic group (3.43 ± 0.86 cm) and the endoscopic group (2.78 ± 0.73 cm) (P < 0.01). Compared with laparoscopic resection, endoscopic resection was associated with faster recovery (P < 0.01), shorter hospital stays (P < 0.01), and lower cost (P < 0.01). The incidence of Clavien-Dindo grade II-V adverse events in the endoscopic group (3/152) was significantly lower than that in the laparoscopic group (12/182) (P = 0.04). After a propensity score matching analysis, the endoscopic group showed similar incidences of complications with the laparoscopic group, while the advantages over laparoscopic resection in postoperative hospital stay, time to first oral intake, and hospitalization expenses remained significant (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Endoscopic resection is a safe and cost-effective method for 2-5 cm of gastric GISTs compared with laparoscopic resection.

RESUMO

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to study the interaction of water with the SrO and FeO2 terminations of the SrFeO3-δ (001) surface, where the effects of the metal dopants (Al, Zr, Nb, and W), surface oxygen vacancies, and oxygen ion migration were investigated. Our calculations showed that the metal dopants benefited the molecular and dissociative adsorptions of H2O on both the perfect and oxygen-vacancy-containing surfaces. The surface oxygen vacancies were predicted to promote the dissociative adsorption of H2O and the formation of H2. For all structures studied, H2 release was found to be always an overall endothermic process, except for the W-doped structure which will become exothermic at high temperature. On the oxygen-vacancy-containing surface, H2 generation was predicted to be easier at the SrO termination than the FeO2 termination. Furthermore, we also investigated the oxygen ion migration mechanism on all surface structures, predicted the behaviour of oxygen migration and the effect of oxygen vacancy defects. Our results showed that Al doping facilitated not only the formation of surface oxygen vacancies, but also oxygen migration from the surface to the subsurface, in contrast to the Zr, Nb and W-doped structures. This study provided significant insights into the interaction of water with the surfaces of doped SrFeO3-δ perovskite materials for thermochemical water splitting applications.

RESUMO

AIMS: The ratio of triglyceride (TG) to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) has been regarded as a novel surrogate indicator of insulin resistance and the atherogenic index of plasma. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the association between the TG/HDL-C ratio and the incidence of cardiovascular events in the general population. DATA SYNTHESIS: Cohort studies reporting the association between the TG/HDL-C ratio and cardiovascular events in the general population were obtained by a systematic literature search of PubMed, Embase and Web of Science databases until April 11, 2021. 13 cohort studies with a total of 207,515 participants were included in this meta-analysis. In a random-effects model, compared with those with the lowest category of the TG/HDL-C ratio, participants with the highest category were independently associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular events (pooled HR: 1.43, 95%CI: 1.26-1.62, I2 = 72.9%). For the presence of publication bias detected by the Egger's test (p = 0.011), correction for publication bias using the trim-and-fill method reduced the HR to 1.26 (95%CI: 1.11-1.44). This result was consistent with the finding of the TG/HDL-C ratio analyzed as a continuous variable (pooled HR per unit increment of the TG/HDL-C ratio: 1.08, 95%CI: 1.04-1.12, I2 = 67.0%). Subgroup analyses indicated that population gender, geographical region, duration of follow-up, adjustment for other lipid parameters, adjustment for diabetes and categorical number did not significantly vary the relationship. CONCLUSION: Elevated TG/HDL-C ratio may be independently associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events in the general population. More well-designed studies are needed to confirm the current findings. REGISTRATION NUMBER IN PROSPERO: CRD42021244583.

RESUMO

Density functional theory calculations were performed to investigate the structural, electronic, and oxygen ion migration properties of B-site ion doped SrFeO3-δ perovskite (B = Al, Zr, Nb, and W) materials, which were used as oxygen transport membranes (OTMs) for pure oxygen output and catalytic reactions. The results of our calculations indicate that the Fe-O bond length increased and the M-O bond length decreased with the doping of Zr, Nb, and W. And the doping of Al caused the valence state of Fe ions to increase. The states near the Fermi level were mainly contributed by Fe atoms and O atoms. The strength of the Fe-O bond gradually weakened with the increase in the valence of the doped ions. Through studying the oxygen vacancy defect and the mechanism of oxygen ion migration, it was found that the doping of Al promoted the migration of oxygen ions, while the doping of Zr, Nb, and W limited the migration of oxygen ions. This study provides important insights into the behavior of oxygen ion migration in doped SrFeO3-δ perovskite materials.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is a reliable marker of insulin resistance, which is a substantial risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) is significantly associated with subclinical atherosclerotic diseases. The present study investigated the relationship between the TyG index and extensive AAC in middle-aged and elderly populations in the United States (US). METHODS AND RESULTS: We performed cross-sectional analyses of data from 1419 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013-2014. AAC was detected using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry on Hologic Discovery model A densitometer, and quantified using the Kauppila score system. Extensive AAC was defined as a Kauppila score ≥5. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to determine the association between AAC and the TyG index. The restricted cubic spline model was used for the dose-response analysis. Extensive AAC was detected in 196 (13.8%) participants. The odds of extensive AAC increased by 41% per unit increase in the TyG index (adjusted odds ratios [OR] = 1.41, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.04-1.91). The multivariable-adjusted OR and 95% CI of the highest TyG index tertile compared with the lowest tertile was 1.80 (95% CI: 1.11-2.94). Extensive AAC showed a more robust association with the TyG index than with triglycerides or glycemia. The subgroup analyses indicated that the association was consistent irrespective of age, sex, hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesteremia and smoking status. CONCLUSION: The TyG index was independently associated with the presence of extensive AAC in the study population. Further studies are required to confirm this relationship.

RESUMO

High-entropy oxides (HEOs), a new concept of entropy stabilization, exhibit unique structures and fascinating properties, and are thus important class of materials with significant technological potential. However, the conventional high-temperature synthesis techniques tend to afford micron-scale HEOs with low surface area, and the catalytic activity of available HEOs is still far from satisfactory because of their limited exposed active sites and poor intrinsic activity. Here we report a low-temperature plasma strategy for preparing defect-rich HEOs nanosheets with high surface area, and for the first time employ them for 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) electrooxidation. Owing to the nanosheets structure, abundant oxygen vacancies, and high surface area, the quinary (FeCrCoNiCu)3 O4 nanosheets deliver improved activity for HMF oxidation with lower onset potential and faster kinetics, outperforming that of HEOs prepared by high-temperature method. Our method opens new opportunities for synthesizing nanostructured HEOs with great potential applications.

RESUMO

Chitosan with hydroxyapatite composition, a natural polymer, may be a biomaterial of importance for bone regeneration. Carbon nanotube, a nanoscale material, has been another focus for bone restoration. Zinc, an essential trace element, contributes to the development and growth of skeletal system. The purpose of the current research was to investigate the effects of Zinc-loaded Carbon Nanotubes/Chitosan composite biomaterials in the restoration of rat skull defects, and to verify the hypothesis that these zinc ions of appropriate concentration would strengthen the osteogenesis of rat defects. Four different groups of composite biomaterials were fabricated from no Zinc Carbon nanotubes/Chitosan (GN), 0.2% Zinc-Carbon nanotubes/Chitosan (GL), 1% Zinc-Carbon nanotubes/Chitosan (GM) and 2% Zinc-Carbon nanotubes/Chitosan (GH). After characterizations, these composite biomaterials were then transplanted into rat skull defects. The experimental animals were executed at 12 weeks after transplanted surgeries, and the rat skull defects were removed for related analyses. The results of characterizations suggested the Zinc-loaded composite biomaterials possessed good mechanical and osteoinductive properties. An important finding was that the optimal osteogenic effect appeared in rat skull defects transplanted with 1% Zinc-Carbon nanotubes/Chitosan. Overall, these composite biomaterials revealed satisfactory osteogenesis, nevertheless, there was a requirement to further perfect the zinc ion concentrations to achieve the better bone regeneration.

RESUMO

Co-based spinel oxides, which are of mixing valences with the presence of both Co2+ and Co3+ at different atom locations, are considered as promising catalysts for the electrochemical oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). Identifying the role of each atom site in the electroxidation of HMF is critical to design the advanced electrocatalysts. In this work, we found that Co2+Td in Co3 O4 is capable of chemical adsorption for acidic organic molecules, and Co3+Oh play a decisive role in HMF oxidation. Thereafter, the Cu2+ was introduced in spinel oxides to enhance the exposure degree of Co3+ and to boost acidic adsorption and thus to enhance the electrocatalytic activity for HMF electrooxidation significantly.

RESUMO

Platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB) is involved in the tissue repair and tumor progression effects, and act as a rapid and early effector cytokines which are released in response to pathogen-induced changes in the microenvironment. Recent researches have implicated PDGF-BB as a potential contributing factor to the spectrum of the cell signaling pathway of interrelated diseases, particularly mesangial cells, mesenchymal stem cells, human dermal fibroblasts, tumor pericytes and smooth muscle cells. In this review, we generalize the present literatures on the roles of PDGF-BB in the various interrelated diseases, providing insights or strategies into the underlying cellular and signaling mechanisms that will help guide future studies further into promising interventional targets with therapeutic potential.
