RESUMO

Understanding tourism related behavior and traveling patterns is an essential element of transportation system planning and tourism management at tourism destinations. Traditionally, tourism market segmentation is conducted to recognize tourist's profiles for which personalized services can be provided. Today, the availability of wearable sensors, such as smartphones, holds the potential to tackle data collection problems of paper-based surveys and deliver relevant mobility data in a timely and cost-effective way. In this paper, we develop and implement a hierarchical clustering approach for smartphone geo-localized data to detect meaningful tourism related market segments. For these segments, we provide detailed insights into their characteristics and related mobility behavior. The applicability of the proposed approach is demonstrated on a use case in the Province of Zeeland in the Netherlands. We collected data from 1505 users during five months using the Zeeland app. The proposed approach resulted in two major clusters and four sub-clusters which we were able to interpret based on their spatio-temporal patterns and the recurrence of their visiting patterns to the region.

BACKGROUND: The metabolic clearance of prolactin (PRL) is partially executed by the kidney. Here, we investigate the urine excretion of PRL in patients with Diabetes Mellitus and renal impairment. METHODS: Serum and urine samples were collected from male, mestizo patients in central Mexico employing a cross-sectional study design. Ninety-eight individuals had either no diabetes and normal renal function (control), diabetes and normal renal function, or diabetes with impaired renal function. PRL was determined by a chemiluminescent immunometric assay; protein, albumin, and creatinine were evaluated using quantitative colorimetric assays. The results were analyzed using ANOVA-testing. RESULTS: Patients with Diabetes Mellitus and renal impairment had significantly higher urine PRL levels than patients with Diabetes Mellitus and normal renal function and control patients. Higher urine PRL levels were associated with lower glomerular filtration rates, higher serum creatinine, and higher urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratios (UACR). Urine PRL levels correlated positively with UACR. Serum PRL levels were similar among groups. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with Diabetes Mellitus and impaired renal function demonstrate a high urinary PRL excretion. Urinary PRL excretion in the context of proteinuria could contribute to PRL dysregulation in renal impairment.

Flexible and wearable biosensors are the next-generation healthcare devices that can efficiently monitor human health conditions in day-to-day life. Moreover, the rapid growth and technological advancements in wearable optoelectronics have promoted the development of flexible organic photoplethysmography (PPG) biosensor systems that can be implanted directly onto the human body without any additional interface for efficient bio-signal monitoring. As an example, the pulse oximeter utilizes PPG signals to monitor the oxygen saturation (SpO2 ) in the blood volume using two distinct wavelengths with organic light emitting diode (OLED) as light source and an organic photodiode (OPD) as light sensor. Utilizing the flexible and soft properties of organic semiconductors, pulse oximeter can be both flexible and conformal when fabricated on thin polymeric substrates. It can also provide highly efficient human-machine interface systems that can allow for long-time biological integration and flawless measurement of signal data. In this work, a clear and systematic overview of the latest progress and updates in flexible and wearable all-organic pulse oximetry sensors for SpO2 monitoring, including design and geometry, processing techniques and materials, encapsulation and various factors affecting the device performance, and limitations are provided. Finally, some of the research challenges and future opportunities in the field are mentioned.

Background: Despite the great concern triggered by the environmental crisis worldwide, the loss of temporal key functions and processes involved in biodiversity maintenance has received little attention. Species are restricted in their life cycles by environmental variables because of their physiological and behavioral properties; thus, the timing and duration of species' presence and their activities vary greatly between species within a community. Despite the ecological relevance of such variation, there is currently no measure that summarizes the key temporal aspects of biological diversity and allows comparisons of community phenological patterns. Here, we propose a measure that synthesizes variability of phenological patterns using the Hill numbers-based attribute diversity framework. Methods: We constructed a new phenological diversity measure based on the aforementioned framework through pairwise overlapping distances, which was supplemented with wavelet analysis. The Hill numbers approach was chosen as an adequate way to define a set of diversity values of different order q, a parameter that determines the sensitivity of the diversity measure to abundance. Wavelet transform analysis was used to model continuous variables from incomplete data sets for different phenophases. The new measure, which we call Phenological Hill numbers (PD), considers the decouplings of phenophases through an overlapping area value between pairs of species within the community. PD was first tested through simulations with varying overlap in phenophase magnitude and intensity and varying number of species, and then by using one real data set. Results: PD maintains the diversity patterns of order q as in any other diversity measure encompassed by the Hill numbers framework. Minimum PD values in the simulated data sets reflect a lack of differentiation in the phenological curves of the community over time; by contrast, the maximum PD values reflected the most diverse simulations in which phenological curves were equally distributed over time. PD values were consistent with the homogeneous distribution of the intensity and concurrence of phenophases over time, both in the simulated and the real data set. Discussion: PD provides an efficient, readily interpretable and comparable measure that summarizes the variety of phenological patterns observed in ecological communities. PD retains the diversity patterns of order q characteristic of all diversity measures encompassed by the distance-based Hill numbers framework. In addition, wavelet transform analysis proved useful for constructing a continuous phenological curve. This methodological approach to quantify phenological diversity produces simple and intuitive values for the examination of phenological diversity and can be widely applied to any taxon or community's phenological traits.

PREMISE OF THE STUDY: The production of banana (Musa spp.; Musaceae) plants is affected by various types of somaclonal variations (SV), including dwarfism. However, methods for specific detection of SV are still scarce. To overcome this, a metabolite-based method for detection of dwarf variants was evaluated. METHODS: The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) metabolite profile of dwarf banana variants was investigated and compared to that of normal-healthy (N) and cucumber mosaic virus (CMV)-infected plants using principal components analysis and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). RESULTS: Significant differences among the sample groups were observed in 82 metabolites. Rhamnose was exclusively present in dwarf plants but allothreonine and trehalose were present in all but SV samples. Cellobiose was only detected in N plants, while 45 other metabolites, including methyl-glucopyranoside, allopyranose, lactose, phenylalanine, and l-lysine were detected in all but CMV-infected samples. PLS-DA models were able to detect SV, CMV, and N plants with 100% accuracy and specificity. DISCUSSION: The GC-MS metabolite profile can be used for the rapid, specific detection of SV at early plant production stages. This is the first metabolite-based characterization and detection of somaclonal variation in plants.

Introducción: los servicios de urgencias requieren de un soporte de exámenes y medicamentos que apoyen su capacidad resolutiva y que se utilicen con eficiencia. Objetivos: identificar el uso de exámenes complementarios y medicamentos, sus costos y relación con la morbilidad observada. Métodos: se realizó un estudio observacional, descriptivo, longitudinal y retrospectivo sobre la utilización de exámenes complementarios, medicamentos y sus costos, en el servicio de urgencias del Policlínico-Hospital Raúl Gómez García, en el período de enero a marzo de 2007. Se correlacionó el uso de exámenes y medicamentos con la morbilidad observada. Resultados: el chequeo de la tensión arterial, las infecciones respiratorias agudas y las crisis agudas de asma bronquial fueron las causas más frecuentes de consulta. Se observó 1 de cada 21,3 pacientes atendidos. El 19,7 por ciento de los pacientes requirieron la realización de exámenes complementarios. El laboratorio clínico, fue el medio diagnóstico más utilizado. Los medicamentos más utilizados fueron: el aerosol de salbutamol, la dipirona y la aminofilina. La indicación de exámenes y medicamentos, generalmente, estuvo justificada por los problemas de salud atendidos. Los exámenes de rayos X, los electrocardiogramas y entre los medicamentos la hidrocortisona, fueron los que más gastos ocasionaron. Conclusiones: la morbilidad observada estuvo acorde con lo esperado para un servicio de urgencias primario, y justificó, en la mayoría de los casos, los exámenes y medicamentos utilizados. El empleo racional del método clínico puede mejorar el uso de recursos y los costos.


Introduction: the emergency services require tests and drugs that support their resolving capacity and that be used with efficiency. Objectives: to identify the use of complementary tests and drugs, their costs and their connection with the morbidity observed. Methods: an observational descriptive, longitudinal and retrospective study on the use of complementary tests, drugs and their costs was conducted at the emergency service of Raúl Gómez García Polyclinic-Hospital from January to March, 2007. The utilization of complementary tests and drugs was correlated with the morbidity observed. Results: the checking of arterial pressure, the acute respiratory infections and the acute crises of bronchial asthma were the most frequent causes for visiting the physician's office. One out of 21.3 attended patients was observed. 19.7 percent of the patients required complementary tests. The clinical lab was the most used diagnostic tool. Salbutamol aerosol, dypirone and aminophyline were the most used drugs. The indication of tests and drugs was generally justified by the health problems attended. X-rays, electrocardiograms and hydocortisone, among drugs, produced the greatest costs. Conclusions: the morbidity observed agreed with what was expected for a primary emergency service and justified, in most of the cases, the tests and drugs used. The rational application of the clinical method may improve the utilization of resources and the costs.
