This work evaluates the impact of salinity and the toxicity of some metals and organic compounds commonly found in produced waters on the growth of model photosynthetic organisms. Five strains of marine microalgae and one cyanobacteria (i.e. Dunaliella salina, Nannochloropsis oceanica, Tetraselmis suecica, Picochlorum costavermella, Coccomyxa simplex and Synechococcus rubescens) were tested in microplates as well as the freshwater Chlorella vulgaris selected as reference. Results revealed that D.salina was able to growth at high salinity (up to 135 g·L-1). Copper was the most toxic metal for all strains (half maximal effective concentration between 0.1 and 10 mg·L-1) except for D.salina and C.simplex. These two strains were the most resistant to all metals tested. All organic compounds presented half maximal effective concentration above 10 mg·L-1, none of them being very toxic for the studied microorganisms. P.costavermella and C.simplex were the most resistant strains to organic compounds. Looking at tolerance to salinity, metals and organic compounds, D.salina appeared to be the best choice for biomass production in produced waters. In addition, growths in 80% artificial produced water supplemented with f medium confirm the feasibility to use this medium to produce biomass.

There is a growing interest for the use of ecological models to improve the Ecological Risk Assessment (ERA) of toxic pollutants. However, although several models have been proposed, there is little information available on their relevance (i.e., validation through comparison with original data) and on their sensitivity to the input parameters. In this study, the Aquatox Model was used to simulate biomass dynamics of various biological compartments in artificial streams designed for measuring the effects of pollutants on aquatic communities. Calibration and validation of the model were performed using data from control streams. Multi-variate sensitivity analysis was implemented to identify those parameters that exert a prominent role in the outputs of the model. The calibrated model was able to adequately describe the dynamics of most of the simulated biological compartments of a stream. Using data from other streams, it was shown that between-streams natural variability was a source of discrepancy between observed and simulated data. Sensitivity analysis showed that the model was highly sensitive to the parameters related to the temperature limitation, maximum rate of photosynthesis of producers and consumption by consumers. This strongly suggests that particular attention should be devoted to the estimation of these parameters if this model has to be used for ERA of toxicants in aquatic ecosystems.

A laboratory experiment was carried on the same initial soil and at the same time than a windrow treatment in order to compare results at field and laboratory scales for a soil mainly contaminated with PAHs. After 6 months, laboratory experiments gave similar but less scattered results than those obtained in the field indicating that the field biotreatment was well optimised. The total amount of PAHs degraded after 6 months was ca. 90% and degradation rates followed a negative exponential trend. Relative degradation rates of 3- and 4-ring PAHs were about 32 and 7.2 times greater than those of 5- and 6-ring PAHs, respectively. With respect to the bacterial community, bacteria belonging to Gamma-proteobacteria persisted whereas Beta-proteobacteria appeared after three months of biotreatment when PAH concentration was low enough to render the soil non-ecotoxic.

The monitoring of a windrow treatment applied to soil contaminated by mostly 2-, 3- and 4-ring PAHs produced by coal tar distillation was performed by following the evolution of both PAH concentration and the bacterial community. Total and PAH-degrading bacterial community structures were followed by 16S rRNA PCR-DGGE in parallel with quantification by bacterial counts and 16 PAH measurements. Six months of biological treatment led to a strong decrease in 2-, 3- and 4-ring PAH concentrations (98, 97 and 82% respectively). This result was associated with the activity of bacterial PAH-degraders belonging mainly to the Gamma-proteobacteria, in particular, the Enterobacteria and Pseudomonas genera, which were detected over the course of the treatment. This group was considered to be a good bioindicator to determine the potential PAH biodegradation of contaminated soil. Conversely, other species, like the Beta-proteobacteria, were detected after 3months, when 2-, 3- and 4-ring PAHs were almost completely degraded. Thus, presence of the Beta-proteobacteria group could be considered a good candidate indicator to estimate the endpoint of biotreatment of this type of PAH-contaminated soil.
