RESUMO

Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) exhibits a range of correlated phenomena that originate from strong electron-electron interactions. These interactions make the Fermi surface highly susceptible to reconstruction when ±1, ±2 and ±3 electrons occupy each moiré unit cell, and lead to the formation of various correlated phases1-4. Although some phases have been shown to have a non-zero Chern number5,6, the local microscopic properties and topological character of many other phases have not yet been determined. Here we introduce a set of techniques that use scanning tunnelling microscopy to map the topological phases that emerge in MATBG in a finite magnetic field. By following the evolution of the local density of states at the Fermi level with electrostatic doping and magnetic field, we create a local Landau fan diagram that enables us to assign Chern numbers directly to all observed phases. We uncover the existence of six topological phases that arise from integer fillings in finite fields and that originate from a cascade of symmetry-breaking transitions driven by correlations7,8. These topological phases can form only for a small range of twist angles around the magic angle, which further differentiates them from the Landau levels observed near charge neutrality. Moreover, we observe that even the charge-neutrality Landau spectrum taken at low fields is considerably modified by interactions, exhibits prominent electron-hole asymmetry, and features an unexpectedly large splitting between zero Landau levels (about 3 to 5 millielectronvolts). Our results show how strong electronic interactions affect the MATBG band structure and lead to correlation-enabled topological phases.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Atrial fibrillation (AF) and flutter are common causes of hospitalizations but contemporary long-term outcomes following these episodes are uncertain. This study assessed outcomes up to 10 years after an acute AF or flutter hospitalization. METHODS: Patients hospitalized acutely with a primary diagnosis of AF or flutter from 2008-17 from all public and most private hospitals in Australia and New Zealand were included. Kaplan-Meier methods and flexible parametric survival modelling were used to estimate survival and loss in life expectancy, respectively. Competing risk model accounting for death was used when estimating incidence of non-fatal outcomes. RESULTS: A total of 260 492 adults (mean age 70.5 ± 14.4 years, 49.6% female) were followed up for 1 068 009 person-years (PY), during which 69 167 died (incidence rate 6.5/100 PY) with 91.2% survival at 1 year, 72.7% at 5 years, and 55.2% at 10 years. Estimated loss in life expectancy was 2.6 years, or 16.8% of expected life expectancy. Re-hospitalizations for heart failure (2.9/100 PY), stroke (1.7/100 PY), and myocardial infarction (1.1/100 PY) were common with respective cumulative incidences of 16.8%, 11.0%, and 7.1% by 10 years. Re-hospitalization for AF or flutter occurred in 21.3% by 1 year, 35.3% by 5 years, and 41.2% by 10 years (11.6/100 PY). The cumulative incidence of patients undergoing catheter ablation of AF was 6.5% at 10 years (1.2/100 PY). CONCLUSIONS: Patients hospitalized for AF or flutter had high death rates with an average 2.6-year loss in life expectancy. Moreover, re-hospitalizations for AF or flutter and related outcomes such as heart failure and stroke were common with catheter ablation used infrequently for treatment, which warrant further actions.

The signaling pathways for the phytohormones ethylene and abscisic acid (ABA) have antagonistic effects on seed germination and early seedling establishment. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. In Arabidopsis thaliana, ETHYLENE INSENSITIVE 2 (EIN2) localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER); although its biochemical function is unknown, it connects the ethylene signal with the key transcription factors EIN3 and EIN3-LIKE 1 (EIL1), leading to the transcriptional activation of ethylene-responsive genes. In this study, we uncovered an EIN3/EIL1-independent role for EIN2 in regulating the ABA response. Epistasis analysis demonstrated that this distinct role of EIN2 in the ABA response depends on HOOKLESS 1 (HLS1), the putative histone acetyltransferase acting as a positive regulator of ABA responses. Protein interaction assays supported a direct physical interaction between EIN2 and HLS1 in vitro and in vivo. Loss of EIN2 function resulted in an alteration of HLS1-mediated histone acetylation at the ABA-INSENSITIVE 3 (ABI3) and ABI5 loci, which promotes gene expression and the ABA response during seed germination and early seedling growth, indicating that the EIN2-HLS1 module contributes to ABA responses. Our study thus revealed that EIN2 modulates ABA responses by repressing HLS1 function, independently of the canonical ethylene pathway. These findings shed light on the intricate regulatory mechanisms underling the antagonistic interactions between ethylene and ABA signaling, with significant implications for our understanding of plant growth and development.

Implementing the synergistic effects between the metal and the ligand has successfully streamlined the energetics for CO2 activation and gained high catalytic activities, establishing the important breakthroughs in photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Herein, we describe a Ni(II) N-confused porphyrin complex (NiNCP) featuring an acidic N-H group. It is readily deprotonated and exists in an anion form during catalysis. Owing to this functional site, NiNCP gave rise to an outstanding turnover number (TON) as high as 217,000 with a 98% selectivity for CO2 reduction to CO, while the parent Ni(II) porphyrin (NiTPP) was found to be nearly inactive. Our mechanistic analysis revealed a nonclassical reaction pattern where CO2 was effectively activated via the attack of the Lewis-basic ligand. The resulting ligand-bound CO2 adduct could be further reduced to produce CO. This new metal-ligand synergistic effect is anticipated to inspire the design of highly active catalysts for small molecule activations.

BACKGROUND: Sphaeropteris brunoniana and Alsophila latebrosa are both old relict and rare tree ferns, which have experienced the constant changes of climate and environment. However, little is known about their high-quality genetic information and related research on environmental adaptation mechanisms of them. In this study, combined with PacBio and Illumina platforms, transcriptomic analysis was conducted on the roots, rachis, and pinna of S. brunoniana and A. latebrosa to identify genes and pathways involved in environmental adaptation. Additionally, based on the transcriptomic data of tree ferns, chloroplast genes were mined to analyze their gene expression levels and RNA editing events. RESULTS: In the study, we obtained 11,625, 14,391 and 10,099 unigenes of S. brunoniana root, rachis, and pinna, respectively. Similarly, a total of 13,028, 11,431 and 12,144 unigenes were obtained of A. latebrosa root, rachis, and pinna, respectively. According to the enrichment results of differentially expressed genes, a large number of differentially expressed genes were enriched in photosynthesis and secondary metabolic pathways of S. brunoniana and A. latebrosa. Based on gene annotation results and phenylpropanoid synthesis pathways, two lignin synthesis pathways (H-lignin and G-lignin) were characterized of S. brunoniana. Among secondary metabolic pathways of A. latebrosa, three types of WRKY transcription factors were identified. Additionally, based on transcriptome data obtained in this study, reported transcriptome data, and laboratory available transcriptome data, positive selection sites were identified from 18 chloroplast protein-coding genes of four tree ferns. Among them, RNA editing was found in positive selection sites of four tree ferns. RNA editing affected the protein secondary structure of the rbcL gene. Furthermore, the expression level of chloroplast genes indicated high expression of genes related to the chloroplast photosynthetic system in all four species. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, this work provides a comprehensive transcriptome resource of S. brunoniana and A. latebrosa, laying the foundation for future tree fern research.

BACKGROUND: Depression and sleep disturbances are associated with increased risks of various diseases and mortality, but their impacts on mortality in cancer survivors remain unclear. The objective of this study was to characterize the independent and joint associations of depressive symptoms and sleep disturbances with mortality outcomes in cancer survivors. METHODS: This population-based prospective cohort study included cancer survivors aged ≥ 20 years (n = 2947; weighted population, 21,003,811) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2018 cycles. Depressive symptoms and sleep disturbances were self-reported. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9). Death outcomes were determined by correlation with National Death Index records through December 31, 2019. Primary outcomes included all-cause, cancer-specific, and noncancer mortality. RESULTS: During the median follow-up of 69 months (interquartile range, 37-109 months), 686 deaths occurred: 240 participants died from cancer, 146 from heart disease, and 300 from other causes. Separate analyses revealed that compared with a PHQ-9 score (0-4), a PHQ-9 score (5-9) was associated with a greater risk of all-cause mortality (hazard ratio [HR], 1.28; 95% CI, 1.03-1.59), and a PHQ-9 score (≥ 10) was associated with greater risk of all-cause mortality (HR, 1.37; 95% CI, 1.04-1.80) and noncancer mortality (HR, 1.45; 95% CI, 1.01-2.10). Single sleep disturbances were not associated with mortality risk. In joint analyses, the combination of a PHQ-9 score ≥ 5 and no sleep disturbances, but not sleep disturbances, was associated with increased risks of all-cause mortality, cancer-specific mortality, and noncancer mortality. Specifically, compared with individuals with a PHQ-9 score of 0-4 and no sleep disturbances, HRs for all-cause mortality and noncancer mortality in individuals with a PHQ-9 score of 5-9 and no sleep disturbances were 1.72 (1.21-2.44) and 1.69 (1.10-2.61), respectively, and 2.61 (1.43-4.78) and 2.77 (1.27-6.07), respectively, in individuals with a PHQ-9 score ≥ 10 and no sleep disturbances; HRs for cancer-specific mortality in individuals with a PHQ-9 score ≥ 5 and no sleep disturbances were 1.95 (1.16-3.27). CONCLUSIONS: Depressive symptoms were linked to a high risk of mortality in cancer survivors. The combination of a PHQ-9 score (≥ 5) and an absence of self-perceived sleep disturbances was associated with greater all-cause mortality, cancer-specific mortality, and noncancer mortality risks, particularly in individuals with a PHQ-9 score (≥ 10).

Artificial photocatalytic CO2 reduction (CO2R) holds great promise to directly store solar energy into chemical bonds. The slow charge and mass transfer kinetics at the triphasic solid-liquid-gas interface calls for the rational design of heterogeneous photocatalysts concertedly boosting interfacial charge transfer, local CO2 concentration, and exposure of active sites. To meet these requirements, in this study heterostructures of CdS/MOL (MOL = metal-organic layer) furnishing different redox Co sites are fabricated for CO2R photocatalysts. It is found that the coordination environment of Co is key to photocatalytic activity. The best catalyst ensemble comprising ligand-chelated Co2+ with the bipyridine electron mediator demonstrates a high CO yield rate of 1523 µmol h-1 gcat -1, selectivity of 95.8% and TON of 1462.4, which are ranked among the best seen in literature. Comprehensive photochemical and electroanalytical characterizations attribute the high CO2R performance to the improved photocarrier separation and charge kinetics originated from the proper energy band alignment and coordination chemistry. This work highlights the construction of 2D heterostructures and modulation of transition metal coordination to expedite the charge kinetics in photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

IMPORTANCE: EV71 poses a significant health threat to children aged 5 and below. The process of EV71 infection and replication is predominantly influenced by ubiquitination modifications. Our previous findings indicate that EV71 prompts the activation of host deubiquitinating enzymes, thereby impeding the host interferon signaling pathway as a means of evading the immune response. Nevertheless, the precise mechanisms by which the host employs ubiquitination modifications to hinder EV71 infection remain unclear. The present study demonstrated that the nonstructural protein 2Apro, which is encoded by EV71, exhibits ubiquitination and degradation mediated by the host E3 ubiquitin ligase SPOP. In addition, it is the first report, to our knowledge, that SPOP is involved in the host antiviral response.

The aim of the current study is to investigate the diagnostic value of R2* mapping versus reduced field-of-view diffusion-weighted imaging (rDWI) of the primary lesion of rectal cancer for preoperative prediction of nonenlarged lymph node metastasis (NLNM). Eighty-one patients with pathologically confirmed rectal cancer underwent preoperative R2* mapping and rDWI sequences before total mesorectal excisions and accompanying regional lymph node dissections. Two radiologists independently performed whole-tumor measurements of R2* and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) parameters on primary lesions of rectal cancer. Patients were divided into positive (NLNM+) and negative (NLNM-) groups based on their pathological analysis. The tumor location, maximum diameter of the tumor, and maximum short diameter of the lymph node were assessed. R2* and ADC, pT stage, tumor grade, status of mesorectal fascia, and extramural vascular invasion were also studied for their potential relationships with NLNM using multivariate logistic regression analysis. The NLNM+ group had significantly higher R2* (43.56 ± 8.43 vs. 33.87 ± 9.57, p < 0.001) and lower ADC (1.00 ± 0.13 vs. 1.06 ± 0.22, p = 0.036) than the NLNM- group. R2* and ADC were correlated to lymph node metastasis (r = 0.510, p < 0.001 for R2*; r = -0.235, p = 0.035 for ADC). R2* and ADC showed good and moderate diagnostic abilities in the assessment of NLNM status with corresponding area-under-the-curve values of 0.795 and 0.636. R2* provided a significantly better diagnostic performance compared with ADC for the prediction of NLNM status (z = 1.962, p = 0.0498). The multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that R2* was a compelling factor of lymph node metastasis (odds ratio = 56.485, 95% confidence interval: 5.759-554.013; p = 0.001). R2* mapping had significantly higher diagnostic performance than rDWI from the primary tumor of rectal cancer in the prediction of NLNM status.

BACKGROUND: Ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is considered a plausible contributor to the onset of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Mechanistic studies are needed to augment the causality of epidemiologic findings. In this study, we aimed to test the hypothesis that repeated exposure to diesel exhaust particles (DEP), a model PM2.5, causes COPD-like pathophysiologic alterations, consequently leading to the development of specific disease phenotypes. Sprague Dawley rats, representing healthy lungs, were randomly assigned to inhale filtered clean air or DEP at a steady-state concentration of 1.03 mg/m3 (mass concentration), 4 h per day, consecutively for 2, 4, and 8 weeks, respectively. Pulmonary inflammation, morphologies and function were examined. RESULTS: Black carbon (a component of DEP) loading in bronchoalveolar lavage macrophages demonstrated a dose-dependent increase in rats following DEP exposures of different durations, indicating that DEP deposited and accumulated in the peripheral lung. Total wall areas (WAt) of small airways, but not of large airways, were significantly increased following DEP exposures, compared to those following filtered air exposures. Consistently, the expression of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) in peripheral lung was elevated following DEP exposures. Fibrosis areas surrounding the small airways and content of hydroxyproline in lung tissue increased significantly following 4-week and 8-week DEP exposure as compared to the filtered air controls. In addition, goblet cell hyperplasia and mucus hypersecretions were evident in small airways following 4-week and 8-week DEP exposures. Lung resistance and total lung capacity were significantly increased following DEP exposures. Serum levels of two oxidative stress biomarkers (MDA and 8-OHdG) were significantly increased. A dramatical recruitment of eosinophils (14.0-fold increase over the control) and macrophages (3.2-fold increase) to the submucosa area of small airways was observed following DEP exposures. CONCLUSIONS: DEP exposures over the courses of 2 to 8 weeks induced COPD-like pathophysiology in rats, with characteristic small airway remodeling, mucus hypersecretion, and eosinophilic inflammation. The results provide insights on the pathophysiologic mechanisms by which PM2.5 exposures cause COPD especially the eosinophilic phenotype.

Ultrasensitive detection of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) holds significant clinical importance in monitoring metastasis and therapeutic outcomes. In this study, we have developed a novel electrochemical sensing model based on nanomaterials for highly sensitive and specific determination of CTCs. A gold electrode co-modified with Ketjin black (KB) and Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) exhibits exceptional conductivity. By conjugating palladium-iridium cubic nanozyme (Pd-Ir CNE) with antibodies, we have created a detection probe capable of catalyzing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), thereby amplifying the output signal and resulting in significantly enhanced current on the electrode for detecting CTCs. The constructed immunosensor has achieved a detection limit of 2 cell mL-1 for model MCF-7 cells. Furthermore, the as-constructed electrochemical immunosensor can accurately detect whole blood-spiked target CTCs, showing great promise for clinical applications in early cancer diagnosis and prognosis.

BACKGROUND: Assessing the glymphatic function using diffusion tensor image analysis along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) may be helpful for mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) management. PURPOSE: To assess glymphatic function using DTI-ALPS and its associations with global white matter damage and cognitive impairment in mTBI. STUDY TYPE: Prospective. POPULATION: Thirty-four controls (44.1% female, mean age 49.2 years) and 58 mTBI subjects (43.1% female, mean age 48.7 years), including uncomplicated mTBI (N = 32) and complicated mTBI (N = 26). FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 3-T, single-shot echo-planar imaging sequence. ASSESSMENT: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was done within 1 month since injury. DTI-ALPS was performed to assess glymphatic function, and peak width of skeletonized mean diffusivity (PSMD) was used to assess global white matter damage. Cognitive tests included Auditory Verbal Learning Test and Digit Span Test (forward and backward). STATISTICAL TESTS: Neuroimaging findings comparisons were done between mTBI and control groups. Partial correlation and multivariable linear regression assessed the associations between DTI-ALPS, PSMD, and cognitive impairment. Mediation effects of PSMD on the relationship between DTI-ALPS and cognitive impairment were explored. P-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant, except for cognitive correlational analyses with a Bonferroni-corrected P-value set at 0.05/3 ≈ 0.017. RESULTS: mTBI showed lower DTI-ALPS and higher PSMD, especially in complicated mTBI. DTI-ALPS was significantly correlated with verbal memory (r = 0.566), attention abilities (r = 0.792), executive function (r = 0.618), and PSMD (r = -0.533). DTI-ALPS was associated with verbal memory (ß = 8.77, 95% confidence interval [CI] 5.00, 12.54), attention abilities (ß = 5.67, 95% CI 4.56, 6.97), executive function (ß = 2.34, 95% CI 1.49, 3.20), and PSMD (ß = -0.79, 95% CI -1.15, -0.43). PSMD mediated 46.29%, 20.46%, and 24.36% of the effects for the relationship between DTI-ALPS and verbal memory, attention abilities, and executive function. DATA CONCLUSION: Glymphatic function may be impaired in mTBI reflected by DTI-ALPS. Glymphatic dysfunction may cause cognitive impairment related to global white matter damage after mTBI. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: 2 TECHNICAL EFFICACY: Stage 2.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the feasibility of spectral CT-derived extracellular volume (ECV) for differentiating aldosterone-producing nodules (APN) from nonfunctioning adrenal nodules (NFN). METHODS: Sixty-nine patients with biochemically and histologically confirmed unilateral APN (34) and NFN (35) as well as 23 patients with bilateral APN (19) and NFN (27) confirmed biochemically and by adrenal vein sampling (AVS) were enrolled in this retrospective study from October 2020 to April 2022. All patients underwent contrast-enhanced spectral CT of the adrenal glands with a 10-min delayed phase. The haematocrit level was measured within 2 days of CT. An iodine density map was derived from the delayed CT. The ECV fractions of the APN and NFN were calculated and compared in the test cohort of 69 patients with unilateral adrenal nodules. The optimal cut-off value was determined to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of the ECV fraction for differentiating APN from NFN in the validation cohort of 23 patients with bilateral adrenal nodules. RESULTS: The ECV fractions of the APN (11.17 ± 4.57%) were significantly lower (p < 0.001) than that of the NFN (24.79 ± 6.01%) in the test cohort. At cut-off ECV value of 17.16%, the optimal area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.974 (95% confidence interval: 0.942-1) with 91.4% sensitivity, 93.9% specificity, and 92.8% accuracy in the test cohort and 89.5% sensitivity, 96.3% specificity, and 93.5% accuracy in the validation cohort for differentiating APN from NFN. CONCLUSION: The spectral CT-derived ECV fraction can differentiate APN from NFN with high diagnostic performance. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: Spectral CT-derived extracellular volume fraction could accurately differentiate between adrenal aldosterone-producing nodules and nonfunctioning nodules. It might serve as a noninvasive alternative to adrenal vein sampling in primary aldosteronism patients with bilateral adrenal nodules. KEY POINTS: • Conventional CT cannot differentiate aldosterone-producing adrenal nodules from nonfunctioning nodules. • Extracellular volume of adrenal aldosterone-producing nodules was significantly lower than that of nonfunctioning nodules and normal adrenal glands. It can accurately differentiate between aldosterone-producing and nonfunctioning adrenal nodules. • Extracellular volume may be a novel, noninvasive biomarker alternative to adrenal vein sampling for determining the functional status of bilateral adrenal nodules in patients with primary aldosteronism.

We constructed a new ab initio potential energy surface (PES) for CO-N2O which includes the intramolecular Q3 normal coordinate for the N2O ν3 antisymmetric stretching vibration. The intermolecular potential was evaluated employing the supermolecular method at the [CCSD(T)]-F12a level, with the aug-cc-pVTZ basis set plus bond functions. By integral over the intramolecular Q3 coordinate, we obtained the vibrationally averaged PESs for the CO-N2O system in the ground and ν3 excited states of N2O. Each PES features one nearly T-shaped global minimum and one skewed T-shaped local minimum. Based on these obtained PESs of CO-N2O, the radial discrete variable representation/angle finite base representation method and the Lanczos algorithm were applied for the calculations of bound states and rovibrational energy levels. The calculated ν3 vibrational band origin shift of the N2O monomer in CO-N2O is 2.7570 cm-1, matching well with the observed value of 2.9048 cm-1. The computed microwave and infrared transition frequencies, as well as the rotational parameters, are consistent with the experimental observations.

Nonylphenol (NP) has been recognized as a priority hazardous substance because of its estrogenic activity and ubiquity in the environment. Therefore, it is important to understand the daily intake of NP in humans and evaluate the potential health risks of NP. The median or average estimated daily intake (EDI) of NP was estimated based on urinary NP or alkyl-chain-oxidized NP metabolites concentration data from published epidemiological studies. In brief, we acquired 34 peer-reviewed publications, which contained 14235 samples from twelve countries or regions. The global average estimated daily intake of NP was 1.003 µg/(kg bw·day), which was lower than the tolerable daily intake recommended by the Danish Veterinary and Food Authority [5 µg/(kg bw·day)]. Korea had the highest exposure level [3.471 µg/(kg bw·day)] among different countries or regions. Compared with the adult [0.743 µg/(kg bw·day)] and pregnant women [0.806 µg/(kg bw·day)] groups, the children group had the highest estimated daily intake of NP at 2.368 µg/(kg bw·day). Besides, the global NP risk hazard quotient was 0.201, and the risk hazard quotients of all countries or regions were less than 1. However, the global HQ value of the 95th quantile population was 2.299, which was much higher than 1, the potential health risk cannot be ignored and needs to be confirmed by more research. To our knowledge, this is the first study to assess the overall NP exposure levels based on published biomonitoring data, and has important implications for assessing the potential effects of NP exposure on human health. In addition, OH-NP is a robust and sensitive novel biomarker for NP, there are fewer studies on the application of this biomarker, and more studies are needed in the future for quantitative exposure and risk assessment of NP.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the relationships between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and developing sarcopenia in older adults and the modifying effects of active social participation. METHODS: This prospective cohort study used survey data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, including baseline surveys from 2011, follow-up data from 2013, follow-up data from 2015, and information on ACEs from the 2014 Life History Survey. Information concerning 10 ACEs, including five threat-related ACEs and five deprivation-related ACEs before 17 years of age was obtained by questionnaires through face-to-face interviews. Sarcopenia status was assessed according to the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 algorithm, consisted of low muscle mass, and low muscle strength, or poor physical performance. The relationship between ACEs, social participation, and sarcopenia was evaluated using Cox proportional hazard regression models. RESULTS: The study population comprised 6859 older adults in main analyses. Having experienced ≥ 3 ACEs led to an increased 31% risk of developing sarcopenia (hazard ratio [HR]:1.31, 95% confidence interval [CI]:1.10-1.56). Participants having experienced ≥ 2 threat-related ACEs (HR:1.22, 95%CI:1.04-1.43) or deprivation-related ACEs (HR:1.22, 95%CI:1.02-1.46) had a 22% higher risk of developing sarcopenia. Active social participation significantly modified the association between ACEs (p < 0.05), especially threat-related ACEs (p < 0.05), and sarcopenia. CONCLUSIONS: ACEs were associated with the development of sarcopenia; however, social participation had a modifying effect. These findings provide insights for early identification of vulnerable groups, advance intervention timing, and highlight the benefits of promoting active social participation among individuals with sarcopenia who have experienced ACEs.

The alternating cell specifications of root epidermis to form hair cells or nonhair cells in Arabidopsis are determined by the expression level of GL2, which is activated by an MYB-bHLH-WD40 (WER-GL3-TTG1) transcriptional complex. The phytohormone ethylene (ET) has a unique effect of inducing N-position epidermal cells to form root hairs. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying ET-induced ectopic root hair development remain enigmatic. Here, we show that ET promotes ectopic root hair formation through down-regulation of GL2 expression. ET-activated transcription factors EIN3 and its homolog EIL1 mediate this regulation. Molecular and biochemical analyses further revealed that EIN3 physically interacts with TTG1 and interferes with the interaction between TTG1 and GL3, resulting in reduced activation of GL2 by the WER-GL3-TTG1 complex. Furthermore, we found through genetic analysis that the master regulator of root hair elongation, RSL4, which is directly activated by EIN3, also participates in ET-induced ectopic root hair development. RSL4 negatively regulates the expression of GL2, likely through a mechanism similar to that of EIN3. Therefore, our work reveals that EIN3 may inhibit gene expression by affecting the formation of transcription-activating protein complexes and suggests an unexpected mutual inhibition between the hair elongation factor, RSL4, and the hair specification factor, GL2. Overall, this study provides a molecular framework for the integration of ET signaling and intrinsic root hair development pathway in modulating root epidermal cell specification.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the experiences of parents who have experienced bereavement in their efforts to preserve memories of their deceased child. METHODS: Employing a qualitative meta-synthesis approach, this study systematically sought relevant qualitative literature by conducting searches across various electronic databases, including PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Wiley, up until July 2023. RESULTS: Nine studies are eligible for inclusion and included in the meta-synthesis. Three overarching categories are identified: (1) Affirming the Significance of Memory Making. (2) Best Practices in Memory Making. (3) Barriers to Effective Memory Making. CONCLUSION: Bereaved parents highly value the act of creating lasting memories, emphasizing its profound significance. While forming these memories, it is imperative to offer family-centered care and honor diverse preferences and needs. It is essential to offer effective support to parents, offering them a range of choices. Furthermore, a more comprehensive examination of memory-making practices is required to better understand their influence on parents' recollections of their deceased child.

Organic self-assembled molecules (OSAMs) based hole-transporting materials play a pivotal role in achieving highly efficient and stable inverted perovskite solar cells (IPSCs). However, the reported carbazol-based OSAMs have serious drawbacks, such as poor wettability for perovskite solution spreading due to the nonpolar surface, worse matched energy arrangement with perovskite, and limited molecular species, which greatly limit the device performance. To address above problems, a novel OSAM [4-(3,6-glycol monomethyl ether-9H-carbazol-9-yl) butyl]phosphonic acid (GM-4PACz) was synthesized as hole-transporting material by introducing glycol monomethyl ether (GM) side chains at carbazolyl unit. GM groups enhance the surface energy of Indium Tin Oxide (ITO)/SAM substrate to facilitate the nucleation and growth of up perovskite film, suppress cation defects, release the residual stress at SAM/perovskite interface, and evaluate energy level for matching with perovskite. Consequently, the GM-4PACz based IPSC achieves a champion PCE of 25.52 %, a respectable open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 1.21 V, a high stability, possessing 93.29 % and 91.75 % of their initial efficiency after aging in air for 2000 h or tracking at maximum power point for 1000 h, respectively.
