We have experimentally demonstrated spatially selective absorption in Ag-SiO2-Ag based trilayer thin films by tuning the deposition angle of SiO2layer. These structures generate cavity resonance which can be tuned across the substrate locations due to spatially selective thickness and refractive index of silicon oxide (SiO2) film sandwiched between metallic silver (Ag) mirrors. Spatially selective property of SiO2film is obtained by oblique angle deposition technique using an electron beam evaporation system. The resonance wavelength of absorption in this trilayer structure shifts across the substrate locations along the direction of oblique deposition. The extent of shift in resonance increases with increase in angle of deposition of SiO2layer. 4.14 nm mm-1average shift of resonance wavelength is observed when SiO2is deposited at 40° whereas 4.76 nm mm-1average shift is observed when SiO2is deposited at 60°. We observed that the width of resonance increases with angle of deposition of the cavity layer and ultimately the resonant absorption disappears and becomes broadband when SiO2is deposited at glancing angle deposition (GLAD) configuration. Our study reveals that there is a suitable range of oblique angle of deposition from 40° to 60° for higher spatial tunability and resonant absorption whereas the absorption becomes broadband for glancing angle deposition.

The study presents a novel approach to analysing the thermoluminescence (TL) glow curves (GCs) of CaSO4:Dy-based personnel monitoring dosimeters using machine learning (ML). This study demonstrates the qualitative and quantitative impact of different types of anomalies on the TL signal and trains ML algorithms to estimate correction factors (CFs) to account for these anomalies. The results show a good degree of agreement between the predicted and actual CFs, with a coefficient of determination greater than 0.95, a root mean square error less than 0.025, and a mean absolute error less than 0.015. The use of ML algorithms leads to a significant two-fold reduction in the coefficient of variation of TL counts from anomalous GCs. This study proposes a promising approach to address anomalies caused by dosimeter, reader, and handling-related factors. Furthermore, it accounts for non-radiation-induced TL at low dose levels towards improving the dosimetric accuracy in personnel monitoring.

Heat shock transcription factors (Hsfs) play an essential role as transcriptional regulatory proteins against heat stress by controlling the expression of heat-responsive genes. Common bean is a highly thermosensitive crop, and, therefore, its genome sequence information is segregated, characterized here in terms of heat shock transcription factors and its evolutionary significance. In this study, a complete comprehensive set of 29 non-redundant full-length Hsf genes were identified and characterized from Phaseolus vulgaris L. (PvHsf) genome sequence. Detailed gene information such as chromosomal localization, domain position, motif organization, and exon-intron identification were analyzed. All the 29 PvHsf genes were mapped on 8 out of 11 chromosomes, indicating the gene duplication occurred in the common bean genome. Motif analysis and exon-intron structure were conserved in each group, which showed that the cytoplasmic proteins highly influence the conserved structure of PvHsfs and heat-induced response. The HSF genes were grouped into three classes, i.e., A to C and 14 groups, based on structural features and phylogenetic relationships. Only one pair of paralog sequences suggests that it may be derived from the duplication event during evolution. A comparative genomics study indicated the influence of whole-genome duplication and purifying selection on the common bean genome during development. In silico expression analysis showed the active role of class A and B family during abiotic stress conditions and higher expression in floral organs. The qRT-PCR analysis revealed PvHSFA8 as the master regulator and PvHSFB1A and PvHSFB2A induction during heat exposure in French beans.

BACKGROUND: Protein, starch, amylose and total soluble sugars are basic metabolites of seed that influence the eating, cooking and nutritional qualities of rice. Chlorophyll is responsible for the absorption and utilization of the light energy influencing photosynthetic efficiency in rice plant. Mapping of these traits are very important for detection of more number of robust markers for improvement of these traits through molecular breeding approaches. RESULTS: A representative panel population was developed by including 120 germplasm lines from the initial shortlisted 274 lines for mapping of the six biochemical traits using 136 microsatellite markers through association mapping. A wide genetic variation was detected for the traits, total protein, starch, amylose, total soluble sugars, chlorophyll a, and chlorophyll b content in the population. Specific allele frequency, gene diversity, informative markers and other diversity parameters obtained from the population indicated the effectiveness of utilization of the population and markers for mapping of these traits. The fixation indices values estimated from the population indicated the existence of linkage disequilibrium for the six traits. The population genetic structure at K = 3 showed correspondence with majority of the members in each group for the six traits. The reported QTL, qProt1, qPC6.2, and qPC8.2 for protein content; qTSS8.1 for total soluble sugar; qAC1.2 for amylose content; qCH2 and qSLCHH for chlorophyll a (Chl. a) while qChl5D for chlorophyll b (Chl. b) were validated in this population. The QTL controlling total protein content qPC1.2; qTSS7.1, qTSS8.2 and qTSS12.1 for total soluble sugars; qSC2.1, qSC2.2, qSC6.1 and qSC11.1 for starch content; qAC11.1, qAC11.2 and qAC11.3 for amylose content; qChla8.1 for Chl. a content and qChlb7.1 and qChlb8.1 for Chl. b identified by both Generalized Linear Model and Mixed Linear Model were detected as novel QTL. The chromosomal regions on chromosome 8 at 234 cM for grain protein content and total soluble sugars and at 363 cM for Chl. a and Chl. b along with the position at 48 cM on chromosome 11 for starch and amylose content are genetic hot spots for these traits. CONCLUSION: The validated, co-localized and the novel QTL detected in this study will be useful for improvement of protein, starch, amylose, total soluble sugars and chlorophyll content in rice.

RESUMO

Leishmaniasis is broadly classified into three types: cutaneous, mucocutaneous and visceral. The visceral form is most dangerous and can result in death. Although leishmaniasis is an ancient disease, its treatment is still challenging. Several drugs, differing in their cost, toxicity, treatment duration and emergence of drug resistance, are used for different types of leishmaniasis. To overcome these limitations, the search for newer drugs and other treatments continues. In this article, we discuss conventional drugs, other treatments, including newer options such as immunotherapy and immunochemotherapy, and future prospects for leishmaniasis treatment.

Background Periodontitis is the common oral condition which affects the periodontium of the teeth that leads to destruction of periodontal ligaments and alveolar bone. Open flap debridement is the surgical procedure which provides access and visibility of the site, application of laser as an adjunct has various advantanges. Objective To compare clinical outcomes after open flap debridement with or without diode laser. Method Patients aged 25-45 years diagnosed with infrabony defect ≥ 5 mm visiting Department of Dental Surgery, Bir Hospital. Control group sites were treated with open flap debridement alone, whereas test-groups were treated with Open flap debridement with diode laser. Various parameters like Plaque index, Gingival index, Pocket depth and Clinical attachment level were assessed and compared between groups at baseline, 3 and 6 months. Result The mean plaque and gingival scores improved in both the control and test groups at 3 and 6 months follow up as compared to baseline and was statistically nonsignificant between two groups. Open flap debridement with or without diode laser in the treatment of periodontal intrabony defects did not produce significant reduction in pocket depth and gain in clinical attachment level. Conclusion There was no significant differences in the clinical parameters were seen in the surgical flap debridement of infrabony pocket with and without diode laser. Diode laser can be used safely as an adjunct. However, long-term, multicentric, histologic and microbial studies are required.

Background Gingivitis simply means the inflammation of gingiva. It is a reversible state but can lead to periodontitis. The final result could be the exfoliation of the tooth causing decreased masticatory function leading to a compromised quality of life. Gingivitis in the pregnant woman should be carefully assessed and treated and given special attention. There is rare documentation on the prevalence of gingivitis in pregnancy in the least developed countries. Objective To evaluate the prevalence of gingivitis in the second trimester of pregnancy and assess its relationship with age, parity, education, occupation, gravidity, oral hygiene habit and frequency of brushing. Method An observational descriptive study was conducted among 384 pregnant females in their second trimester in Kathmandu, Nepal. Demographic variables and general information including those related to oral hygiene practices and habits were collected during an interview. Plaque index and Gingival Index was recorded among the patients through full mouth examination at four sites. Result The prevalence of gingivitis in the second trimester of pregnancy was 76.3%. Statistically significant relationship was found between gingivitis and gravida and parity. A relation could not be established between gingivitis with age, education, occupation, oral hygiene habit and frequency of brushing. Conclusion The prevalence of gingivitis is found to be high in Nepalese pregnant women. Special strategies should be introduced targeting the pregnant women of least developed countries to uplift their periodontal health.

An unobstructed Fontan pathway is essential for optimal hemodynamics. We hypothesize that more extracardiac conduit (ECC) Fontan pathways develop obstruction compared to lateral tunnel (LT) Fontans and that the dilation typically observed in LTs results in similar mid-term clinical outcomes. A single-center, retrospective study was done including all Fontan cardiac catheterizations from 2006 to 2019. Angiography and medical records were reviewed to define Fontan pathway dimensions, interventions, and clinical outcomes. 232 patients underwent cardiac catheterization, where 60% were ECCs and 30% LTs. The minimum cross-sectional area (CSA) of ECCs was significantly smaller than LTs and LTs dilated over time. 13% of patients had Fontan pathway stenting at a median age of 16.2 years. The minimum CSA for patients who underwent intervention was significantly smaller than patients who did not. Lower weight at Fontan surgery was associated with intervention on the Fontan pathway, with a threshold weight of 15 kg for patients with an ECC. The median follow-up was 3.3 years. Patients who had Fontan pathway intervention were not more likely to experience the composite adverse clinical outcome. LTs were more likely than ECCs to have worse clinical outcome, when liver fibrosis was included. This is the first study to describe angiographic dimensions of the Fontan pathway in a large number of patients over time. ECCs tend to become stenotic. Lower weight at Fontan surgery is a potential risk for Fontan pathway intervention. LTs may experience worse clinical outcomes in follow-up. This information can help inform the optimal timing and method of post-Fontan surveillance.

Background Endodontics is considered as one of the most difficult and stressful disciplines in dentistry. This might be due to the complex anatomical variations, recent advances in equipment, technology, materials and lack of self-confidence. Objective To determine the self-confidence level among the intern dentists in performing endodontic procedures from six different colleges of Kathmandu University, Nepal. Method A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 145 intern dentists. The online questionnaire regarding confidence level (5 point Likert scale) in different endodontic procedures and difficulty level (easy, ok and difficult) with respect to teeth was distributed. For descriptive purpose, frequency and percentage for each response were calculated. Result Dental interns were confident in performing majority of the normal endodontic procedures, however, they showed less confidence in performing difficult steps like rubber dam application for anterior (74, 51%) and posterior tooth (91, 62.7%), use of electronic apex locator (89, 61.4%), using rotary files (114, 78.6%), management of flare-ups (86, 59.4%), assessment of quality of post-endodontic treatment (85, 58.5%), recall periods (75, 51.6%) and performing post and core (82, 56.6%). Likewise, upper first molars (84, 57.9%) and second molars (104, 71.7%) were found to be the most difficult teeth to treat. Conclusion It can be concluded that majority of the dental interns were confident in performing basic endodontic procedures, however, they were found to have low confidence in performing difficult steps. Further training and exposure should be incorporated to increase their confidence level.

BACKGROUND: High yielding rice varieties are usually low in grain iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) content. These two micronutrients are involved in many enzymatic activities, lack of which cause many disorders in human body. Bio-fortification is a cheaper and easier way to improve the content of these nutrients in rice grain. RESULTS: A population panel was prepared representing all the phenotypic classes for grain Fe-Zn content from 485 germplasm lines. The panel was studied for genetic diversity, population structure and association mapping of grain Fe-Zn content in the milled rice. The population showed linkage disequilibrium showing deviation of Hardy-Weinberg's expectation for Fe-Zn content in rice. Population structure at K = 3 categorized the panel population into distinct sub-populations corroborating with their grain Fe-Zn content. STRUCTURE analysis revealed a common primary ancestor for each sub-population. Novel quantitative trait loci (QTLs) namely qFe3.3 and qFe7.3 for grain Fe and qZn2.2, qZn8.3 and qZn12.3 for Zn content were detected using association mapping. Four QTLs, namely qFe3.3, qFe7.3, qFe8.1 and qFe12.2 for grain Fe content were detected to be co-localized with qZn3.1, qZn7, qZn8.3 and qZn12.3 QTLs controlling grain Zn content, respectively. Additionally, some Fe-Zn controlling QTLs were co-localized with the yield component QTLs, qTBGW, OsSPL14 and qPN. The QTLs qFe1.1, qFe3.1, qFe5.1, qFe7.1, qFe8.1, qZn6, qZn7 and gRMm9-1 for grain Fe-Zn content reported in earlier studies were validated in this study. CONCLUSION: Novel QTLs, qFe3.3 and qFe7.3 for grain Fe and qZn2.2, qZn8.3 and qZn12.3 for Zn content were detected for these two traits. Four Fe-Zn controlling QTLs and few yield component QTLs were detected to be co-localized. The QTLs, qFe1.1, qFe3.1, qFe5.1, qFe7.1, qFe8.1, qFe3.3, qFe7.3, qZn6, qZn7, qZn2.2, qZn8.3 and qZn12.3 will be useful for biofortification of the micronutrients. Simultaneous enhancement of Fe-Zn content may be possible with yield component traits in rice.

Adrenal ganglioneuromas are rare sympathetic differentiated tumors which originate from neural crest cells. These lesions are usually discovered incidentally on imaging and tend to be hormonally silent. Preoperative diagnosis of adrenal ganglioneuroma remains extremely challenging and the gold standard treatment is adrenalectomy. There is good prognosis after surgery without recurrence. We herein report a case of adrenal ganglioneuroma in a 15 year old female who presented with complaint of abdominal discomfort. Contrast Enhanced Computed Tomography abdomen showed a large septated hypodense right suprarenal mass which was echogenic on Ultrasonography. It showed T1 hypointense and T2 hyperintense signal on Magnetic Resonance Imaging of abdomen and pelvis. Excisional biopsy and histological examination of the mass was suggestive of adrenal ganglioneuroma. This report presents the clinical and radiological data for the rare tumor which would share some experience to facililate the diagnosis of adrenal ganglioneuroma.

Background Ductus arteriosus is a vascular structure which connects the roof of main pulmonary artery near the origin of the left branch pulmonary artery to the proximal descending aorta. Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) closure is indicated for any patient who is symptomatic from left to right shunting. Objective To investigate the hospital outcomes of surgical closure of patent ductus arteriosus over last 19 years starting from the very first case of our center. Method This is a retrospective analysis of all patent ductus arteriosus treated surgically from August 2001 to July 2019. Patients who underwent isolated surgical closure of patent ductus arteriosus were included. Data have been presented in three different eras (Era 1: 2001-2007, Era 2: 2008-2013, and Era 3: 2014-2019) to see the trend of evolution of this surgery. Result A total of 901 patients aged 8.67±8.76 years under went patent ductus arteriosus surgical closure over last 19 years. Patients in the initial era 2001-2007 were significantly older compared with other 2 eras (p=0.000). Males accounted for 35.5% of all cases. Twenty percent had severe pulmonary artery hypertension.Duration of mechanical ventilation was 3.57±9.64 hours with ICU stay of 1.55±1.53 days, and hospital stay of 3.9±2.3 days. Overall in hospital mortality was 0.8%; for isolated patent ductus arteriosus diagnosis, mortality was 0.2%. Chylothorax was noted in 0.4%. Conclusion This is the first report to analyze surgical outcomes of patent ductus arteriosus ligation in our center. We have discussed the evolution of patent ductus arteriosus surgery in our center, and have shown favorable outcomes in terms of morbidity and mortality.

Rice is the staple food for majority of the global population. But, rice grain has low protein content (PC). Mapping of QTLs controlling grain PC is essential for enhancement of the trait through breeding programs. A shortlisted panel population for grain protein content was studied for genetic diversity, population structure and association mapping for grain PC. Phenotyping results showed a wide variation for grain PC. The panel population showed a moderate level of genetic diversity estimated through 98 molecular markers. AMOVA and structure analysis indicated linkage disequilibrium for grain PC and deviation of Hardy-Weinberg's expectation. The analysis showed 15% of the variation among populations and 73% among individuals in the panel population. STRUCTURE analysis categorized the panel population into three subpopulations. The analysis also revealed a common primary ancestor for each subpopulation with few admix individuals. Marker-trait association using 98 molecular markers detected 7 strongly associated QTLs for grain PC by both MLM and GLM analysis. Three novel QTLs qPC3.1, qPC5.1 and qPC9.1 were detected for controlling the grain PC. Four reported QTLs viz., qPC3, QPC8, qPC6.1 and qPC12.1 were validated for use in breeding programs. Reported QTLs, qPC6, qPC6.1 and qPC6.2 may be same QTL controlling PC in rice. A very close marker RM407 near to protein controlling QTL, qProt8 and qPC8, was detected. The study provided clue for simultaneous improvement of PC with high grain yield in rice. The strongly associated markers with grain PC, namely qPC3, qPC3.1, qPC5.1, qPC6.1, qPC8, qPC9.1 and qPC12.1, will be useful for their pyramiding for developing protein rich high yielding rice.

In 2013, the Odisha state Vector Borne Disease Control Programme led a five year operational research project, under programmatic conditions, in close collaboration with several partners. This Comprehensive Case Management Project covered a population of 900,000 across paired control and intervention blocks in four districts, each with different transmission intensities. Key gaps in access to malaria services were identified through household surveys and a detailed situation analysis. The interventions included ensuring adequate stocks of rapid diagnostic tests and antimalarial drugs at the village level, the capacity building of health workers and ASHAs, setting up microscopy centres at the primary health care level, and conducting mass screening and treatment in poorly accessible areas. The programme strengthened the routine health system, and improved malaria surveillance as well as the access to and quality of care. Initially, the programme led to increased case reporting due to improved detection, followed by a decline in malaria incidence. Lessons from the project were then scaled up statewide in the form of a new initiative-Durgama Anchalare Malaria Nirakaran (DAMaN).

Background Maternal deaths and complications are highly preventable with good antenatal, postnatal and skilled care during childbirth. Inadequate information on the factors affecting these services could be barrier to a reduction of maternal deaths in lowincome countries. Objective To assess the uptake of antenatal, postnatal and skilled care during childbirth. Method A cross-sectional study was conducted in eight villages of Nawalparasi district in southern Nepal. A total of 447 women who had given birth within the preceding 24 months were recruited using multistage random sampling. Data were collected using a pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire. Chi-square tests were used to assess association between variables. Result Over 70% of women had gone for at least four antenatal care check-ups while only 14.3% had at least three postnatal check-ups in their last pregnancies. The proportion of institution delivery was 54%. Women's literacy was associated with the uptake of antenatal services (p=< 0.001), postnatal care (p=0.04) and institutional delivery (p=< 0.001). Knowledge of antenatal (p=< 0.001) and postnatal care was also associated with uptake of respective services (p=< 0.001). Conclusion The uptake and knowledge of antenatal care was much better than of postnatal care. Home delivery rates were still very high. A scaling-up of education and awarenessraising interventions in this community could help improve the uptake of maternal health services.

The knowledge on the mode of action, biocompatibility and ecological tolerance of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) is gradually accumulating over the years with contradictory findings. Most of the studies indicated the toxic impact of AgNPs on plant growth and development, where induction of oxidative stress was considered to be one of the causal factors. The present study demonstrates the phytostimulatory effect of bio-synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) during seed germination and seedling growth of rice (Oryza sativa L., cv. Swarna) under in vitro condition. All the tested concentrations of AgNPs (10, 20, 40 ppm) promote both the shoot and root growth which was evident from the increased length and biomass of the seedlings. Exposure to AgNPs also significantly increased the chlorophyll a and carotenoid contents. The content and the pattern of distribution of phenolic metabolites among the different treatments are indicative of non-toxic impact of AgNP mimicking mild or no stress to the seedlings. Growth stimulation of rice seedlings by AgNPs was further supported by a low level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) concomitant with decreased amount of lipid peroxidation and H2O2 content, compared to control. In order to unravel the stimulatory impact of AgNPs on rice seedling growth, the present study also describes the AgNPs induced changes in antioxidative enzyme activity and related gene expression levels. Elevated levels of catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and glutathione reductase (GR) activities were recorded in all the AgNPs treated seedlings with improved growth. The activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) was not significantly altered at low concentration of AgNPs. It appears that enzymes of ascorbate cycle, APX and GR are more active in ensuring protection against oxidative damage than SOD. There was significant up-regulation of CAT and APX gene expressions in seedlings exposed to AgNPs, whereas the expression level of CuZnSOD gene was decreased gradually with an increase in the concentration of AgNPs. The antioxidant enzyme activities and gene expression patterns coupled with the levels of H2O2 and lipid peroxidation indicates that the efficiency of redox reactions was increased in the presence of AgNPs and that accelerates the seedling growth.

A magnetic atom in a superconducting host induces so-called Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) bound states inside the superconducting energy gap. By combining spin-resolved scanning tunneling spectroscopy with simulations we demonstrate that the pair of peaks associated with the YSR states of an individual Fe atom coupled to an oxygen-reconstructed Ta surface gets spin polarized in an external magnetic field. As theoretically predicted, the electron and hole parts of the YSR states have opposite signs of spin polarizations which keep their spin character when crossing the Fermi level through the quantum phase transition. The simulation of a YSR state right at the Fermi level reveals zero spin polarization which can be used to distinguish such states from Majorana zero modes in chains of YSR atoms.

Aloe vera has been used worldwide for pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic industries due to its wide biological activities. However, quality improvement of low fat meat products and their acceptability with added Aloe vera gel (AVG) is scanty. The aim of this study was to explore the feasibility of using fresh AVG on physicochemical, textural, sensory and nutritive qualities of goat meat nuggets. The products were prepared with 0%, 2.5%, and 5% fresh AVG replacing goat meat and were analyzed for proximate composition, physicochemical and textural properties, fatty acid profile and sensory parameters. Changes in lipid oxidation and microbial growth of nuggets were also evaluated over 9 days of refrigerated storage. The results showed that AVG significantly (p<0.05) decreased the pH value and protein content of meat emulsion and nuggets. Product yield was affected at 5% level of gel. Addition of AVG in the formulation significantly affected the values of texture profile analysis. The AVG reduced the lipid oxidation and microbial growth in nuggets during storage. Sensory panelists preferred nuggets with 2.5% AVG over nuggets with 5% AVG. Therefore, AVG up to 2.5% level could be used for quality improvement in goat meat nuggets without affecting its sensorial, textural and nutritive values.

Background Spirometry is a standard test for screening and evaluation of patients with symptoms of cough and shortness of breath. Despite its easy availability, low cost and ease of performance it has not been widely used in clinical practice in Nepal. Objective To assess the prevalence of respiratory diseases in a regional referral centre in patients referred for spirometry. Method This is a descriptive cross-sectional study including patients referred for spirometry to the spirometry unit of Dhulikhel Hospital, Kathmandu University Hospital from 2014 July to 2015 October. The spirometry findings of the patients fulfilling the criteria of American Thoracic Society/European Respitatory Society (ATS/ERS) guidelines were analyzed and categorized as normal, having obstructive lung diseases including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and bronchial asthma or restrictive lung disease. Data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0 software. Result Out of 821 patients, 755 patients (92%) fulfilled ATS/ERS criteria for satisfactory spirometry. The prevalence of COPD was 31.4%, bronchial asthma 24.2% and restrictive lung disease 8.1%. The mean age of patients diagnosed with COPD was 57.8±10.8 years; bronchial asthma 44.3±16.2 years; and restrictive lung disease 44.6±21.5 years. Both COPD and bronchial asthma were common in females. About twenty two percent of the COPD patients were non-smokers and 86.3% of these were females. The most common symptoms for referral was cough and shortness of breath: these symptoms were more likely to be associated with abnormal spirometry findings. Conclusion Spirometry is a crucial preliminary test for evaluation of patients with respiratory symptoms. It should be used more frequently to help stratify patients for appropriate treatment.

MAIN CONCLUSION: Rapid uniform germination and accumulation of biomass during initial phase of seedling establishment is an essential phenotypic trait considered as early seedling vigour for direct seeded situation in rice irrespective of environment. Enhanced role of carbohydrate, amylase, growth hormones, antioxidant enzymes and ascorbic acid brings changes in vigour and phenotype of seedling. Early establishment and demanding life form dominate the surroundings. Crop plant that has better growth overdrives the weed plant and suppresses its growth. Seedling early vigour is the characteristic of seed quality and describes the rapid, uniform germination and the establishment of strong seedlings in any environmental condition. The phenotype of modern rice varieties has been changed into adaptable for transplanted rice with thirst toward water and selection pressure for semi-dwarf architecture resulting in reduced early vigour. Decreasing freshwater availability and rising labour cost drives the search for a suitable alternative management system to enhance grain yield productivity for the burgeoning world population. In view of these issues, much attention has been focused on dry direct-seeded rice, because it demands low input. A rice cultivar with a strong seedling vigour trait is desirable in case of direct seeding. However, seedling vigour has not been selected in crop improvement programmes in conventional breeding due to its complex nature and quantitative inheritance. Molecular markers have been proven effective in increasing selection efficiency, particularly for quantitative traits that are simply inherited. Marker-assisted selection approach has facilitated efficient and precise transfer of genes/QTL(s) into many crop species and suggests a speedy and efficient technique over conventional breeding and selection methods. In this review, we present the findings and investigations in the field of seedling vigour in rice that includes the nature of inheritance of physio-morphological and biochemical traits and QTLs to assist plant breeders who work for direct-seeded rice.
