RESUMO

Modern classes of antimicrobials are crucial because most drugs in development today are basically antibiotic derivatives. Even though a large number of metal-based compounds have been studied as antimicrobial agents, relatively few studies have examined the antimicrobial properties of Pd(II) and Pt(II) compounds. The [3+2] cycloaddition reactions of [M(N3)L]PF6 (M = Pd(II) and Pt(II); L = 4'-(2-pyridyl)-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine) with 4,4,4-trifluoro-2-butynoic acid ethyl ester gave the corresponding triazolate complexes. The reaction products were fully characterized with a variety of analytical and spectroscopic tools including X-ray crystallographic analysis. The crystal structure of [Pd(triazolatoCF3,COOCH2CH3)L]PF6 provided cut-off evidence that the kinetically formed N1-triazolato isomer favoured the isomerization to the thermodynamically stable N2-analogue. The experimental work was complemented with computational work to get an insight into the nature of the predominant triazolate isomer. The lysozyme binding affinity of the triazolate complexes was examined by mass spectrometry. An analysis of the lysozyme Pd(II) adducts suggests a coordinative covalent mode of binding via the loss of the triazolato ligand. The free ligand and its triazolate complexes displayed selective toxicity against Candida albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans, while no cytotoxicity was observed against the normal human embryonic kidney cell line.

RESUMO

Reactions between sodium tetrachloropalladate and 2- (or 4-) substituted 4-phenyl-3-thiosemicarbazone ligands (HLR), with various electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents (R = OCH3, NO2, and Cl), afford square-planar complexes of the general formula [Pd(LR)2]. Ground-state geometry optimization and the vibrational analysis of cis- and trans-isomers of the complexes were carried out to get an insight into the stereochemistry of the complexes. Natural bond orbital analysis was used to analyze how the nature of the substituent affects the natural charge of the metal center, the type of hybridization, and the strength of the M-N and M-S bonds. Using spectrophotometry, the stability of the complexes, and their DNA binding abilities were assessed. The Pd(II) complexes showed moderate cytotoxicity against MCF-7 and Caco-2 cell lines, two of the assessed malignant cell lines, resulting in all known cell death types, including early apoptotic bodies and late apoptotic vacuoles as well as evident necrotic bodies.

RESUMO

Borylation of a tungsten-bound N2 ligand and halide abstraction provides access to a cationic complex with an unprecedented linear NNBR ligand. This complex undergoes [3+2] cycloaddition with azides, and an unexpected chain-extension reaction with an iminoborane, leading to a complex with a five-atom B/N chain. These two [NNBR]-containing complexes, inorganic analogues of E. O. Fischer's alkynylcarbynes, are very rare examples of molecules containing all-inorganic chains of sp-hybridized atoms.

RESUMO

In this contribution, we reported the three-dimensional (3D) analogues of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-stabilized 9-borafluorenium and 9-borafluorene radical. The radical was fully characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV), UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. The distinct boron-centered radical character of 9-borafluorene radical was corroborated by DFT calculations and EPR analysis.

RESUMO

The synthesis and characterization of laterally extended azabora[5]-, -[6]- and -[7]helicenes, assembled from N-heteroaromatic and dibenzo[g,p]chrysene building blocks is described. Formally, the π-conjugated systems of the pristine azaborole helicenes were enlarged with a phenanthrene unit leading to compounds with large Stokes shifts, significantly enhanced luminescence quantum yields (Φ) and dissymmetry factors (glum ). The beneficial effect on optical properties was also observed for helical elongation. The combined contributions of lateral and helical extensions resulted in a compound showing green emission with Φ of 0.31 and |glum | of 2.2×10-3 , highest within the series of π-extended azaborahelicenes and superior to emission intensity and chiroptical response of its non-extended congener. This study shows that helical and lateral extensions of π-conjugated systems are viable strategies to improve features of azaborole helicenes. In addition, single crystal X-ray analysis of configurationally stable [6]- and -[7]helicenes was used to provide insight into their packing arrangements.

RESUMO

In this manuscript, we portrayed a stereospecific synthesis of C2- and C1-symmetric pyrene-fused [7]helicene compounds 1 and 2, respectively. Compounds 1 and 2 were synthesized via a one-pot Suzuki coupling-C-H activation and two-step Suzuki coupling-Scholl reaction, respectively, with complete retention of configuration. The synthesized molecules differ in the fusing mode of [7]helicene units with pyrene via six- and seven-membered rings for 1 and 2, respectively. There was a significant difference in the functional properties and enantiomerization barrier of both compounds because of their distinct molecular symmetry as well as fusing mode to pyrene moiety. The heptagon-containing molecule 2 showed remarkable photophysical and chiroptical properties with commendable configurational stability compared to 1 and pristine [7]helicene as well as its [5]helicene congener.

RESUMO

Reaction between bromo tricarbonyl manganese(I) and N,N'-bis(phenyl)-1,4-diaza-1,3-butadiene ligands, bearing different electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups R = OCH3, Cl, and NO2 in the ortho- and para-positions on the phenyl substituent, afforded [MnBr(CO)3(N-N)] complexes. The influence of the character and position of the substituent on the dark stability and carbon monoxide releasing kinetics was systematically investigated and correlated with the data of the time-dependent density functional theory calculations. The combined UV/Vis and IR data clearly revealed that the aerated solutions of [MnBr(CO)3(N-N)] in either coordinating or noncoordinating solvents are dark stable and the fluctuations observed during the incubation period especially in the case of the nitro derivatives may be attributed to the exchange of the axial bromo ligand with the coordinating solvent molecules. The free ligands and nitro complexes were non-cytotoxic to HepG2 cells under both the dark and illumination conditions. In the dark, Mn(I) compounds, incorporating o-OCH3 and o-Cl, exhibited excellent cytotoxicity with IC50 values of 18.1 and 11.8 µM, while their para-substituted analogues were inactive in the dark and active upon the irradiation at 365 nm with IC50 values of 5.7 and 6.7 µM, respectively.

RESUMO

The behavior of the redox-active aminotroponiminate (ATI) ligand in the coordination sphere of bismuth has been investigated in neutral and cationic compounds, [Bi(ATI)3 ] and [Bi(ATI)2 Ln ][A] (L=neutral ligand; n=0, 1; A=counteranion). Their coordination chemistry in solution and in the solid state has been analyzed through (variable-temperature) NMR spectroscopy, line-shape analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, and their Lewis acidity has been evaluated by using the Gutmann-Beckett method (and modifications thereof). Cyclic voltammetry, in combination with DFT calculations, indicates that switching between ligand- and metal-centered redox events is possible by altering the charge of the compounds from 0 in neutral species to +1 in cationic compounds. This adds important facets to the rich redox chemistry of ATIs and to the redox chemistry of bismuth compounds, which is, so far, largely unexplored.

RESUMO

Aminotroponiminate (ATI) ligands are a versatile class of redox-active and potentially cooperative ligands with a rich coordination chemistry that have consequently found a wide range of applications in synthesis and catalysis. While backbone substitution of these ligands has been investigated in some detail, the impact of electron-withdrawing groups on the coordination chemistry and reactivity of ATIs has been little investigated. We report here Li, Na, and K salts of an ATI ligand with a nitro-substituent in the backbone. It is demonstrated that the NO2 group actively contributes to the coordination chemistry of these complexes, effectively competing with the N,N-binding pocket as a coordination site. This results in an unprecedented E/Z isomerisation of an ATI imino group and culminates in the isolation of the first "naked" (i. e., without directional bonding to a metal atom) ATI anion. Reactions of sodium ATIs with silver(I) and tritylium salts gave the first N,N-coordinated silver ATI complexes and unprecedented backbone substitution reactions. Analytical techniques applied in this work include multinuclear (VT-)NMR spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, and DFT calculations.

RESUMO

Cyclic alkyl(amino)carbene-stabilized (cyano)hydroboryl anions were synthesized by deprotonation of (cyano)dihydroborane precursors. While they display boron-centered nucleophilic reactivity towards organohalides, generating fully unsymmetrically substituted cyano(hydro)organoboranes, they show cyano-nitrogen-centered nucleophilic reactivity towards haloboranes, resulting in the formation of hitherto unknown linear 2-aza-1,4-diborabutatrienes.

RESUMO

Boroles are attracting broad interest for their myriad and diverse applications, including in synthesis, small molecule activation and functional materials. Their properties and reactivity are closely linked to the cyclic conjugated diene system, which has been shown to participate in cycloaddition reactions, such as the Diels-Alder reaction with alkynes. The reaction steps leading to boranorbornadienes, borepins and tricyclic boracyclohexenes from the thermal reaction of boroles with alkynes are seemingly well understood as judged from the literature. Herein, we question the long-established mechanistic picture of pericyclic rearrangements by demonstrating that seven-membered borepins (i. e., heptaphenylborepin and two derivatives substituted with a thienyl and chloride substituent on boron) exist in a dynamic equilibrium with the corresponding bicyclic boranorbornadienes, the direct Diels-Alder products, but are not isolable products from the reactions. Heating gradually converts the isomeric mixtures into fluorescent tricyclic boracyclohexenes, the most stable isomers in the series. Results from mechanistic DFT calculations reveal that the tricyclic compounds derive from the boranorbornadienes and not the borepins, which were previously believed to be intermediates in purely pericyclic processes.

RESUMO

The 2-fold reduction of B2X4(NHC)2 (X = Cl, Br, I; NHC = (un)saturated N-heterocyclic carbene) yields the corresponding green-colored 1,2-dihalodiborenes B2X2(NHC)2, the 11B NMR resonances of which are strongly upfield-shifted upon descending the halide group. The diborenes crystallize as the trans isomers, with relatively short B═B double bonds (1.513(9) to 1.568(4) Å). Cyclic voltammetric experiments with these diborenes reveal reversible one-electron oxidation processes to the corresponding diboron radical cation (E1/2 = -1.16 to -1.50 V); the reducing power of B2X2(NHC)2 increasing with the electronegativity of the halide and for the less π-accepting unsaturated NHCs. The main UV-vis absorption (393-463 nm), which corresponds mainly to a highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) → lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) transition, undergoes a blueshift upon descending the halide group and shows some dependence on the stereoelectronics of the NHC ligands. Computational analyses show that the HOMO of B2X2(NHC)2 is mostly localized on the B═B π bond, with the contribution from halide p orbitals decreasing down the group, and the saturated NHCs affording some π-bonding delocalization over the B-CNHC bonds. The calculated HOMO and LUMO energies decrease upon descending the halide group, while the HOMO-LUMO gap also decreases, correlating well with the cyclovoltammetry and UV-vis data. The reactions of B2Br2(NHC)2 with elemental sulfur and red selenium lead to the formation of the corresponding diborathiiranes and seleniranes, respectively, which were characterized by NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and X-ray diffraction analyses. In one case, an additional one-electron oxidation yields a unique cyclic B2Se radical cation. Computational analyses show that the localization of the HOMO and HOMO - 1 of the diboraseleniranes is inverted compared to the diborathiiranes.

RESUMO

Cationization of Bi(NPh2)3 has recently been reported to allow access to single- and double-CH activation reactions, followed by selective transformation of Bi-C into C-X functional groups (X = electrophile). Here we show that this approach can successfully be transferred to a range of bismuth amides with two aryl groups at the nitrogen, Bi(NRaryl2)3. Exchange of one nitrogen-bound aryl group for an alkyl substituent gave the first example of a homoleptic bismuth amide with a mixed aryl/alkyl substitution pattern at the nitrogen, Bi(NPhiPr)3. This compound is susceptible to selective N-N radical coupling in its neutral form and also undergoes selective CH activation when transformed into a cationic species. The second CH activation is blocked due to the absence of a second aryl moiety at nitrogen. The Lewis acidity of neutral bismuth amides is compared with that of cationic species "[Bi(aryl)(amide)(L)n]+" and "[Bi(aryl)2(L)n]+" based on the (modified) Gutmann-Beckett method (L = tetrahydrofuran or pyridine). The heteroaromatic character of [Bi(C6H3R)2NH(triflate)] compounds, which are iso-valence-electronic with anthracene, is investigated by theoretical methods. Analytical methods used in this work include nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, mass spectrometry, and density functional theory calculations.

RESUMO

The ability of an atom or molecular fragment to bind multiple carbon monoxide (CO) molecules to form multicarbonyl adducts is a fundamental trait of transition metals. Transition-metal carbonyl complexes are vital to industry, appear naturally in the active sites of a number of enzymes (such as hydrogenases), are promising therapeutic agents, and have even been observed in interstellar dust clouds. Despite the wealth of established transition-metal multicarbonyl complexes, no elements outside groups 4 to 12 of the periodic table have yet been shown to react directly with two or more CO units to form stable multicarbonyl adducts. Here we present the synthesis of a borylene dicarbonyl complex, the first multicarbonyl complex of a main-group element prepared using CO. The compound is additionally stable towards ambient air and moisture. The synthetic strategy used--liberation of a borylene ligand from a transition metal using donor ligands--is broadly applicable, leading to a number of unprecedented monovalent boron species with different Lewis basic groups. The similarity of these compounds to conventional transition-metal carbonyl complexes is demonstrated by photolytic liberation of CO and subsequent intramolecular carbon-carbon bond activation.

RESUMO

In this communication, we demonstrate a novel approach to prepare a discrete dimer of chiral phthalocyanine (Pc) by exploiting the flexible molecular geometry of helicenes, which enables structural interlocking and strong aggregation tendency of Pcs. Synthesized [7]helicene-Pc hybrid molecular structure, zinc-[7]helicenocyanine (Zn-7HPc), exclusively forms a stable dimeric pair consisting of two homochiral molecules. The dimerization constants were estimated to be as high as 8.96×106  M-1 and 3.42×107  M-1 in THF and DMSO, respectively, indicating remarkable stability of dimer. In addition, Zn-7HPc exhibited chiral self-sorting behavior, which resulted in preferential formation of a homochiral dimer also in the racemic sample. Two phthalocyanine subunits in the dimeric form strongly communicate with each other as revealed by a large comproportionation constant and observation of an IV-CT band for the thermodynamically stable mixed-valence state.

RESUMO

The concepts of aromaticity and antiaromaticity have a long history, and countless demonstrations of these phenomena have been made with molecules based on elements from the p, d, and f blocks of the periodic table. In contrast, the limited oxidation-state flexibility of the s-block metals has long stood in the way of their participation in sophisticated π-bonding arrangements, and truly antiaromatic systems containing s-block metals are altogether absent or remain poorly defined. Using spectroscopic, structural, and computational techniques, we present herein the synthesis and authentication of a heterocyclic compound containing the alkaline earth metal beryllium that exhibits significant antiaromaticity, and detail its chemical reduction and Lewis-base-coordination chemistry.

RESUMO

The one-electron reduction of a cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC)-stabilized arylborylene carbonyl complex yields a dimeric borylketyl radical anion, resulting from an intramolecular aryl migration to the CO carbon atom. Computational analyses support the existence of a [(CAAC)B(CO)Ar].- radical anion intermediate. Further reduction leads to a highly nucleophilic dianionic (boraneylidene)methanolate.

RESUMO

Pressure-induced polymerization of aromatic compounds leads to novel materials containing sp3 carbon-bonded networks. The choice of the molecular species and the control of their arrangement in the crystal structures via intermolecular interactions, such as the arene-perfluoroarene interaction, can enable the design of target polymers. We have investigated the crystal structure compression and pressure-induced polymerization reaction kinetics of two polycyclic 1:1 arene-perfluoroarene cocrystals, naphthalene/octafluoronaphthalene (NOFN) and anthracene/octafluoronaphthalene (AOFN), up to 25 and 30 GPa, respectively, using single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and theoretical computations based on density-functional theory. Our study shows the remarkable pressure stability of the parallel arene-perfluoroarene π-stacking arrangement and a reduction of the interplanar π-stacking separations by ca. 19-22% before the critical reaction distance is reached. A further strong, discontinuous, and irreversible reduction along the stacking direction at 20 GPa in NOFN (18.8%) and 25 GPa in AOFN (8.7%) indicates the pressure-induced breakdown of π-stacking by formation of σ-bonded polymers. The association of the structural distortion with the occurrence of a chemical reaction is confirmed by a high-pressure kinetic study using infrared spectroscopy, indicating one-dimensional polymer growth. Structural predictions for the fully polymerized high-pressure phases consisting of highly ordered rods of hydrofluorocarbons are presented based on theoretical computations, which are in excellent agreement with the experimentally determined unit-cell parameters. We show that the polymerization takes place along the arene-perfluoroarene π-stacking direction and that the lateral extension of the columns depends on the extension of the arene and perfluoroarene molecules.

RESUMO

The formation of salicylaldimine derivatives via ring contraction as byproducts in 2-aminotropone syntheses has been investigated. Salicylaldiminate (SAI) complexes of the alkali metals Li-K have been synthesized and transformed into heterobimetallic complexes. Important findings include an unusual double heterocubane structure of the homometallic sodium SAI, an unprecedented ligand-induced E/Z isomerization of the aldimine functional group in the homometallic potassium SAI, and the first example of a structurally authenticated mixed-metal SAI based on s-block central atoms. Rapid equilibria have been shown to play a crucial role in the solution phase chemistry of mixed-metal SAIs. Analytical techniques applied in this work include (heteronuclear) NMR spectroscopy, VT- and DOSY NMR spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, and DFT calculations.

RESUMO

The reductive coupling of an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) stabilized (dibromo)vinylborane yields a 1,2-divinyldiborene, which, although isoelectronic to a 1,3,5-triene, displays no extended π conjugation because of twisting of the C2 B2 C2 chain. While this divinyldiborene coordinates to copper(I) and platinum(0) in an η2 -B2 and η4 -C2 B2 fashion, respectively, it undergoes a complex rearrangement to an η4 -1,3-diborete upon complexation with nickel(0).
