Diet and lifestyle choices, notably the Western-type diet, are implicated in oxidative stress and inflammation, factors that elevate the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). In contrast, the Mediterranean of diet, rich in antioxidants, appears to have protective effects against these risks. This article highlights the dual role of diet in generating molecular hydrogen ( H 2 ) in the gut, and H 2 's subsequent influence on the pathophysiology and prevention of CVD and T2DM. Dietary fiber, flavonoids, and probiotics contribute to the production of liters of H 2 in the gut, functioning as antioxidants to neutralize free radicals and dampen inflammation. In the last two decades, mounting evidence has demonstrated that both endogenously produced and exogenously administered H 2 , whether via inhalation or H 2 -rich water (HRW), have potent anti-inflammatory effects across a wide range of biochemical and pathophysiological processes. Recent studies indicate that H 2 can neutralize hydroxyl and nitrosyl radicals, acting as a cellular antioxidant, thereby reducing oxidative stress and inflammation-leading to a significant decline in CVDs and metabolic diseases. Clinical and experimental research support the therapeutic potential of H 2 interventions such as HRW in managing CVDs and metabolic diseases. However, larger studies are necessary to verify the role of H 2 therapy in the management of these chronic diseases.

OBJECTIVES: To report and analyze the pattern of maxillofacial injuries in trauma victims and to define the role of a maxillofacial surgeon in an emergency trauma care team. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Trauma patients reported and reporting to the casualty of a tertiaryhospital with facial injuries and other suspected concomitant injuries in the body were included in this study. The complete medical and radiographic records of each patient were reviewed and data was collected in a standard proforma in this 5-year clinical study (3 year of retrospective and 2 year of prospective study). The complete data related to the facial injuries and associated systemic trauma was recorded and statistical analysis conducted. RESULTS: A total of 18,369 patients with trauma were admitted to the hospital from May 2018 to April 2023. Out of these, 11,277 (61.4%) were males and 7,092 (38.6%) were females. Seventy percent of the reported cases with trauma were in the age group of 14-40 years. The incidence of trauma during the monsoon season was highest (n = 7,927, 43%). The commonest etiological factor leading to trauma was road traffic accident (n = 4,510, 40%). Among facial injuries, the mandibular fractures (n = 1,821, 41%) were predominant. CONCLUSIONS: The management of polytrauma patients should be undertaken by a team of specialists which should include a maxillofacial surgeon as facial injuries were common. This data is essential in developing and assessing the preventative strategies aimed at decreasing the frequency of facial and other injuries.

Fertilizer-intensive agriculture leads to emissions of reactive nitrogen (Nr), posing threats to climate via nitrous oxide (N2O) and to air quality and human health via nitric oxide (NO) and ammonia (NH3) that form ozone and particulate matter (PM) downwind. Adding nitrification inhibitors (NIs) to fertilizers can mitigate N2O and NO emissions but may stimulate NH3 emissions. Quantifying the net effects of these trade-offs requires spatially resolving changes in emissions and associated impacts. We introduce an assessment framework to quantify such trade-off effects. It deploys an agroecosystem model with enhanced capabilities to predict emissions of Nr with or without the use of NIs, and a social cost of greenhouse gas to monetize the impacts of N2O on climate. The framework also incorporates reduced-complexity air quality and health models to monetize associated impacts of NO and NH3 emissions on human health downwind via ozone and PM. Evaluation of our model against available field measurements showed that it captured the direction of emission changes but underestimated reductions in N2O and overestimated increases in NH3 emissions. The model estimated that, averaged over applicable U.S. agricultural soils, NIs could reduce N2O and NO emissions by an average of 11% and 16%, respectively, while stimulating NH3 emissions by 87%. Impacts are largest in regions with moderate soil temperatures and occur mostly within two to three months of N fertilizer and NI application. An alternative estimate of NI-induced emission changes was obtained by multiplying the baseline emissions from the agroecosystem model by the reported relative changes in Nr emissions suggested from a global meta-analysis: -44% for N2O, -24% for NO and +20% for NH3. Monetized assessments indicate that on an annual scale, NI-induced harms from increased NH3 emissions outweigh (8.5-33.8 times) the benefits of reducing NO and N2O emissions in all agricultural regions, according to model-based estimates. Even under meta-analysis-based estimates, NI-induced damages exceed benefits by a factor of 1.1-4. Our study highlights the importance of considering multiple pollutants when assessing NIs, and underscores the need to mitigate NH3 emissions. Further field studies are needed to evaluate the robustness of multi-pollutant assessments.

Heart failure (HF) is a major deteriorating disease of the myocardium due to weak myocardial muscles. As such, the heart is unable to pump blood efficiently around the body to meet its constant demand. HF is a major global health problem with more than 7 million deaths annually worldwide, with some patients dying suddenly due to sudden cardiac death (SCD). There are several risk factors which are associated with HF and SCD which can negatively affect the heart synergistically. One major risk factor is diabetes mellitus (DM) which can cause an elevation in blood glucose level or hyperglycaemia (HG) which, in turn, has an insulting effect on the myocardium. This review attempted to explain the subcellular, cellular and molecular mechanisms and to a lesser extent, the genetic factors associated with the development of diabetes- induced cardiomyopathy due to the HG which can subsequently lead to chronic heart failure (CHF) and SCD. The study first explained the structure and function of the myocardium and then focussed mainly on the excitation-contraction coupling (ECC) processes highlighting the defects of calcium transporting (SERCA, NCX, RyR and connexin) and contractile regulatory (myosin, actin, titin and troponin) proteins. The study also highlighted new therapies and those under development, as well as preventative strategies to either treat or prevent diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM). It is postulated that prevention is better than cure.

Rodent models of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) often do not recapitulate the severity of muscle wasting and resultant fibro-fatty infiltration observed in DMD patients. Having recently documented severe muscle wasting and fatty deposition in two preclinical models of muscular dystrophy (Dysferlin-null and mdx mice) through apolipoprotein E (ApoE) gene deletion without and with cholesterol-, triglyceride-rich Western diet supplementation, we sought to determine whether magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy (MRI and MRS, respectively) could be used to detect, characterize, and compare lipid deposition in mdx-ApoE knockout with mdx mice in a diet-dependent manner. MRI revealed that both mdx and mdx-ApoE mice exhibited elevated proton relaxation time constants (T2 ) in their lower hindlimbs irrespective of diet, indicating both chronic muscle damage and fatty tissue deposition. The mdx-ApoE mice on a Western diet (mdx-ApoEW ) presented with greatest fatty tissue infiltration in the posterior compartment of the hindlimb compared with other groups, as detected by MRI/MRS. High-resolution magic angle spinning confirmed elevated lipid deposition in the posterior compartments of mdx-ApoEW mice in vivo and ex vivo, respectively. In conclusion, the mdx-ApoEW model recapitulates some of the extreme fatty tissue deposition observed clinically in DMD muscle but typically absent in mdx mice. This preclinical model will help facilitate the development of new imaging modalities directly relevant to the image contrast generated in DMD, and help to refine MR-based biomarkers and their relationship to tissue structure and disease progression.

A highly virulent sub-lineage of the Streptococcus pyogenes M1 clone has been rapidly expanding throughout Denmark since late 2022 and now accounts for 30% of the new invasive group A streptococcal infections. We aimed to investigate whether a shift in variant composition can account for the high incidence rates observed over winter 2022/23, or if these are better explained by the impact of COVID-19-related restrictions on population immunity and carriage of group A Streptococcus.

BACKGROUND: There is a well-described association between bacteremia with bovis group streptococci or Clostridium septicum and an increased probability of a colorectal cancer (CRC) diagnosis. We wanted to investigate the existence of a similar association between CRC and bacteremia with other bacteria belonging to the gut microbiota.. METHODS: A population based cohort study in a population about 2 million people including 45 774 bacteremia episodes and 231 387 blood culture negative cases was performed in the Region of Southern Denmark and Region Zealand from 2007-2016. Episodes of bacteremia were combined with the Danish central register for CRC. We performed Cox's regression analysis with hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: The study results confirmed previous findings of an increased risk of a CRC diagnosis after bacteremia with the bovis group streptococci (risk within a year: 4.3%; HR [95% CI]: 8.46 [3.51-20.4]) or C. septicum (20.8%; 76.2 [42.0-138]). Furthermore, Bacteroides ovatus (6.7%; 20.3 [5.04-81.8]), Bacteroides uniformis (5.4%; 16.2 [4.02-65.7]), Clostridium tertium (3.6 %; 13.9 [1.96-99.4]), Fusobacterium spp. (excluding F. necrophorum) (3.0 %; 8.51 [2.73-26.5]), and Gram-positive anaerobic cocci (3.6 %; 10.9 [4.50-26.3]) were also associated with an increased risk of a CRC diagnosis compared to patients with negative blood cultures (0.4%). CONCLUSIONS: Bacteremia with specific gut microbiota anaerobic bacteria is associated with a high risk of a diagnosis of CRC, indicating the need for colorectal workup. Importantly, this strategy also holds the possible additional benefit of detecting adenomas or other premalignant conditions, which were not included in the present study.

End-stage kidney disease, the most advanced stage of chronic kidney disease (CKD), requires renal replacement therapy or kidney transplant to sustain life. To accomplish durable dialysis access, the creation of an arteriovenous fistula (AVF) has emerged as a preferred approach. Unfortunately, a significant proportion of patients that receive an AVF experience some form of hand dysfunction; however, the mechanisms underlying these side effects are not understood. In this study, we used nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to investigate the muscle metabolome following iliac AVF placement in mice with CKD. To induce CKD, C57BL6J mice were fed an adenine-supplemented diet for 3 wk and then randomized to receive AVF or sham surgery. Two weeks following surgery, the quadriceps muscles were rapidly dissected and snap frozen for metabolite extraction and subsequent nuclear magnetic resonance analysis. Principal component analysis demonstrated clear separation between groups, confirming a unique metabolome in mice that received an AVF. AVF creation resulted in reduced levels of creatine, ATP, and AMP as well as increased levels of IMP and several tricarboxylic acid cycle metabolites suggesting profound energetic stress. Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression analyses identified several metabolites that were strongly linked to measures of limb function (grip strength, gait speed, and mitochondrial respiration). In summary, AVF creation generates a unique metabolome profile in the distal skeletal muscle indicative of an energetic crisis and myosteatosis.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Creation of an arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is the preferred approach for dialysis access, but some patients experience hand dysfunction after AVF creation. In this study, we provide a detailed metabolomic analysis of the limb muscle in a murine model of AVF. AVF creation resulted in metabolite changes associated with an energetic crisis and myosteatosis that associated with limb function.

INTRODUCTION: Fuel sources for skeletal muscle tissue include carbohydrates and fatty acids, and utilization depends upon fiber type, workload, and substrate availability. The use of isotopically labeled substrate tracers combined with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) enables a deeper examination of not only utilization of substrates by a given tissue, but also their contribution to tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle intermediates. OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to determine the differential utilization of substrates in isolated murine skeletal muscle, and to evaluate how isopotomer anlaysis provided insight into skeletal muscle metabolism. METHODS: Isolated C57BL/6 mouse hind limb muscles were incubated in oxygenated solution containing uniformly labeled 13C6 glucose, 13C3 pyruvate, or 13C2 acetate at room temperature. Isotopomer analysis of 13C labeled glutamate was performed on pooled extracts of isolated soleus and extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles. RESULTS: Pyruvate and acetate were more avidly consumed than glucose with resultant increases in glutamate labeling in both muscle groups. Glucose incubation resulted in glutamate labeling, but with high anaplerotic flux in contrast to the labeling by pyruvate. Muscle fiber type distinctions were evident by differences in lactate enrichment and extent of substrate oxidation. CONCLUSION: Isotope tracing experiments in isolated muscles reveal that pyruvate and acetate are avidly oxidized by isolated soleus and EDL muscles, whereas glucose labeling of glutamate is accompanied by high anaplerotic flux. We believe our results may set the stage for future examination of metabolic signatures of skeletal muscles from pre-clinical models of aging, type-2 diabetes and neuromuscular disease.

The solar thermochemical CO2 splitting (CDS) is scrutinized via a redox ZnO/Zn cycle. The second law efficiency analysis is carried out by acquiring the required thermodynamic data from HSC Chemistry software. The main focus of this study is to explore the influence of reduction temperature (Tred), molar flow rate of inert sweep gas (n˙inert), and energy required for the gas separation on the solar-to-fuel energy conversion efficiency (ηsolar-to-fuel) of the ZnO/Zn cycle. All the calculations are conducted at a constant gas-to-gas heat recovery effectiveness (εgg) equal to 0.5. n˙inert required is recorded to be too high (5050 mol/s) at Tred equal to 1500 K and moderately low (15 mol/s) for Tred equal to 2000 K. The amount of thermal energy required to heat the inert/O2 gas mixture (from CDS temperature to separator-1 temperature) and inert sweep gas (from separator-1 temperature to reduction temperature) has a significant impact on the total thermal energy requirement of the cycle (Q˙TC). The rise in Tred from 1500 K to 2000 K shows a considerable decline in Q˙TC from 77417.5 kW to 1161.8 kW, respectively. Consequently, the highest ηsolar-to-fuel (17.0%) is recorded for Tred equal to 2000 K.

Chronic heart failure (CHF) has different stages and includes pre-HF (PHF), a state of high risk of developing myocardial dysfunction and advanced CHF. Some major behavioral risk factors of PHF might predispose to biological risk factors such as obesity, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, hypertension, myocardial infarction, and cardiomyopathy. These risk factors damage the myocytes leading to fibrosis, apoptosis, cardiac hypertrophy, along with alterations in cardiomyocyte' size and shape. A condition of physiological subcellular remodeling resulting into a pathological state might be developed, conducting to PHF. Both PHF and heart failure (HF) are associated with the activation of phospholipases and protease, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress and development of intra-cellular free Ca2+  [Ca2+ ]i overloading to an elevation in diastolic [Ca2+ ]i . Simultaneously, cardiac gene expression is activated leading to further molecular, structural and biochemical changes of the myocardium. The sub-cellular remodeling may be intimately involved in the transition of cardiac hypertrophy to heart failure. 2D- and 3D-speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) have been used to quantify regional alterations of longitudinal strain and area strain, through their polar projection, which permits a further assessment of both sites and degrees of myocardial damage. The examination of strain can identify sub-clinical cardiac dysfunction or cardiomyocyte remodeling. During remodeling of the myocardium cardiac strain is attenuated, therefore it is an indicator of disease assessment.

BACKGROUND: Risk factors for, and long-term outcomes following, detection of varicella zoster virus (VZV) DNA in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are unknown. METHODS: We performed a nationwide population-based cohort study of all Danish residents who had VZV DNA detected in the CSF by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) between 1 January 1997 and 1 March 2016 (VZV cohort; n = 517) and an age- and sex- matched comparison cohort from the general Danish population (n = 9823). We examined potential risk factors and mortality, neurologic morbidity, psychiatric morbidity, redemptiom of prescriptions for nervous system medicine prescribed for the nervous system, and social outcomes. RESULTS: Prior hospital admission, redemption of immunosuppressive medicine, comorbidity, and immunosuppressive conditions were associated with detection of VZV DNA in the CSF. Mortality was increased in the VZV cohort, especially during the first year of observation and among patients with encephalitis. Patients in the VZV cohort had an increased risk of dementia and epilepsy. The redemption of antiepileptics and antidepressants was increased in the VZV cohort. CONCLUSIONS: Immunosuppression and comorbidity are associated with increased risk of detection of VZV DNA in the CSF and the condition is associated with increased mortality and neurological morbidity.

Serological assays for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) are needed to support clinical diagnosis and epidemiological investigations. Recently, assays for large-scale detection of total antibodies (Ab), immunoglobulin G (IgG), and IgM against SARS-CoV-2 antigens have been developed, but there are limited data on the diagnostic accuracy of these assays. This study was a Danish national collaboration and evaluated 15 commercial and one in-house anti-SARS-CoV-2 assays in 16 laboratories. Sensitivity was evaluated using 150 samples from individuals with asymptomatic, mild, or moderate COVID-19, nonhospitalized or hospitalized, confirmed by nucleic acid amplification tests (NAAT); samples were collected 13 to 73 days either from symptom onset or from positive NAAT (patients without symptoms). Specificity and cross-reactivity were evaluated in samples collected prior to the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic from >586 blood donors and patients with autoimmune diseases, cytomegalovirus or Epstein-Barr virus infections, and acute viral infections. A specificity of ≥99% was achieved by all total-Ab and IgG assays except one, DiaSorin Liaison XL IgG (97.2%). Sensitivities in descending order were Wantai ELISA total Ab (96.7%), CUH-NOVO in-house ELISA total Ab (96.0%), Ortho Vitros total Ab (95.3%), YHLO iFlash IgG (94.0%), Ortho Vitros IgG (93.3%), Siemens Atellica total Ab (93.2%), Roche Elecsys total Ab (92.7%), Abbott Architect IgG (90.0%), Abbott Alinity IgG (median 88.0%), DiaSorin Liaison XL IgG (median 84.6%), Siemens Vista total Ab (81.0%), Euroimmun/ELISA IgG (78.0%), and Snibe Maglumi IgG (median 78.0%). However, confidence intervals overlapped for several assays. The IgM results were variable, with the Wantai IgM ELISA showing the highest sensitivity (82.7%) and specificity (99%). The rate of seropositivity increased with time from symptom onset and symptom severity.

INTRODUCTION: Research aimed at understanding intraspecific variation among corals could substantially increase understanding of coral biology and improve outcomes of active restoration efforts. Metabolomics is useful for identifying physiological drivers leading to variation among genotypes and has the capacity to improve our selection of candidate corals that express phenotypes beneficial to restoration. OBJECTIVES: Our study aims to compare metabolomic profiles among known, unique genotypes of the threatened coral Acropora cervicornis. In doing so, we seek information related to the physiological characteristics driving variation among genotypes, which could aid in identifying genets with desirable traits for restoration. METHODS: We applied proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) to identify and compare metabolomic profiles for seven unique genotypes of A. cervicornis that previously exhibited phenotypic variation in a common garden coral nursery. RESULTS: Significant variation in polar and nonpolar metabolite profiles was found among A. cervicornis genotypes. Despite difficulties identifying all significant metabolites driving separation among genotypes, our data support previous findings and further suggest metabolomic profiles differ among various genotypes of the threatened species A. cervicornis. CONCLUSION: The implementation of metabolomic analyses allowed identification of several key metabolites driving separation among genotypes and expanded our understanding of the A. cervicornis metabolome. Although our research is specific to A. cervicornis, these findings have broad relevance for coral biology and active restoration. Furthermore, this study provides specific information on the understudied A. cervicornis metabolome and further confirmation that differences in metabolome structure could drive phenotypic variation among genotypes.

OBJECTIVE: This single-arm real-world observation aims to examine the effects of empagliflozin (EMPA) on coronary risk factors among subjects with known diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Records of 63 subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus, receiving EMPA were drawn for this study. Of 63 patients with diabetes, 6 were excluded, and the remaining 57 received EMPA (25 mg/day) for 24 weeks. Clinical data, dietary intakes, and physical activity were assessed by validated questionnaires. RESULTS: Treatment with EMPA was associated with significant decline in fasting and 2-hour post-prandial blood glucose and Hb1c indicating that this agent has potential antidiabetic effects. Pro-inflammatory cytokines; C-reactive protein, TNF-α, and interleukin-6 showed significant reduction after treatment with EMPA, compared to baseline levels. Apart from these changes, parameters of oxidative stress, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, malondialdehyde, and diene conjugates as well as uric acid, showed a significant decline with an increase in antioxidant vitamins A, E, and C and beta-carotene as well as nitrite. There was a significant decline in serum uric acid, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), with a non-significant reduction in body weight and body mass index as well as in waist circumference of modest significance, after intervention of 12 weeks compared to baseline levels. Total cholesterol, VLDL cholesterol and triglycerides showed non-significant decline compared to baseline levels. CONCLUSION: It is possible that EMPA administration can cause a significant decline in pro-inflammatory cytokines along with blood glucose, Hb1c, oxidative stress, uric acid, blood pressures, and ACE with an increase in antioxidant vitamins and nitrite. Randomized, controlled intervention trials would be necessary to confirm our findings.

Data for US adults aged ≥20 years from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for the years 2003-2014 were analyzed to evaluate how adjusted (N = 8481) and unadjusted (N = 9080) levels of selected perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAA) vary across the different stages of glomerular function (GF) among those who did not have diabetes, anemia, or albuminuria as compared to those who had diabetes only, anemia only, and albuminuria only. PFAAs selected for analyses were: perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA), perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), and perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA). Irrespective of GF stage, there was no noticeable evidence to suggest that adjusted levels of PFAA for those with diabetes only are any lower than those with no diabetes, no anemia, and no albuminuria. Those who had anemia only were found to have lower adjusted levels of at least PFOA, PFOS, PFDA, and PFHxS than those who had no diabetes, no anemia, and no albuminuria. These results were seen in the presence (eGFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2) as well as the absence of chronic kidney disease. For GF-1 (eGFR > 90 mL/min/1.73 m2), GF-2 (60 ≤ eGFR ≤ 90 mL/min/1.73 m2), and GF-3B/4 (15 < eGFR ≤ 45 mL/min/1.73 m2), those who had albuminuria only had lower adjusted levels of PFOA, PFOS, and PFHxS than those who had no diabetes, no anemia, and no albuminuria. In general, adjusted levels of those who had albuminuria only were lower than those who had anemia only at GF-3 and more often than not at GF-1 and GF-2. Rise in adjusted levels of PFAA from GF-1 to GF-3A (45 < eGFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2) was faster for those with anemia only than any other comparison group for the total population and females.

BACKGROUND: The long-term clinical course of patients with an enterovirus central nervous system infection (ECI) is poorly understood. METHODS: We performed a nationwide population-based cohort study of all Danish patients with ECI diagnosed 1997-2016 (n = 1745) and a comparison cohort from the general population individually matched on date of birth and sex (n = 17 450). Outcomes were categorized into mortality and risk of cancer and likely measures of neurological sequelae: neuropsychiatric morbidities, educational landmarks, use of hospital services, employment, receipt of disability pension, income, number of sick leave days, and nursing home residency. RESULTS: Mortality in the first year was higher among patients with ECI (mortality rate ratio [MRR] = 10.0; 95% confidence interval [CI], 4.17-24.1), but thereafter mortality was not higher (MMR = 0.94; 95% CI, 0.47-1.86). Long-term outcomes for patients with ECI were not inferior to those of the comparison cohort for risk of cancer, epilepsy, mental and behavioral disorders, dementia, depression, school start, school marks, high school education, use of hospital services, employment, receipt of disability pension, income, days of sick leave, or nursing home residency. CONCLUSIONS: Diagnosis of an ECI had no substantial impact on long-term survival, health, or social/educational functioning.

BACKGROUND: Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB), caused by the tick-borne spirochetes of the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato species complex, has been suggested to be associated with a range of neurological disorders. In a nationwide, population-based cohort study, we examined the associations between LNB and dementia, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, motor neuron disease, epilepsy, and Guillain-Barré syndrome. METHODS: We used national registers to identify all Danish residents diagnosed during 1986-2016 with LNB (n = 2067), created a gender- and age-matched comparison cohort from the general population (n = 20 670), and calculated risk estimates and hazard ratios. RESULTS: We observed no long-term increased risks of dementia, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, motor neuron diseases, or epilepsy. However, within the first year, 8 (0.4%) of the LNB patients developed epilepsy, compared with 20 (0.1%) of the comparison cohort (difference, 0.3%; 95% confidence interval, .02-.6%). In the LNB group, 11 (0.5%) patients were diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome within the first year after LNB diagnosis, compared with 0 (0.0%) in the comparison cohort. After the first year, the risk of Guillain-Barré was not increased. CONCLUSIONS: LNB patients did not have increased long-term risks of dementia, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, motor neuron diseases, epilepsy, or Guillain-Barré. Although the absolute risk is low, LNB patients might have an increased short-term risk of epilepsy and Guillain-Barré syndrome.

The rechargeable lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is a promising candidate for the next generation of energy storage technology, owing to the high theoretical capacity, high specific energy density, and low cost of electrode materials. The main drawbacks in the development of long-life Li-S batteries are capacity fading and the sluggish kinetics at the cathode caused by the polysulfides shuttle. These limitations are addressed through the design of novel nanocages containing cobalt phosphide (CoP) nanoparticles embedded in highly porous nitrogen-doped carbon (CoP-N-GC) by thermal annealing of ZIF-67 in a reductive atmosphere followed by a phosphidation step using sodium hypophosphite. The CoP nanoparticles, with large surface area and uniform homogeneous distribution within the N-doped nanocage graphitic carbon, act as electrocatalysts to suppress the shuttle of soluble polysulfides through strong chemical interactions and catalyze the sulfur redox. As a result, the S@CoP-N-GC electrode delivers an extremely high specific capacity of 1410 mA h g-1 at 0.1 C (1 C=1675 mA g-1 ) with an excellent coulombic efficiency of 99.7 %. Moreover, capacity retention from 864 to 678 mA h g-1 is obtained after 460 cycles with a very low decay rate of 0.046 % per cycle at 0.5 C. Therefore, the combination of the CoP catalyst and polar conductive porous carbon effectively stabilizes the sulfur cathode, enhancing the electrochemical performance and stability of the battery.

We report an analysis of the aqueous humor (AH) metabolome of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) in comparison to normal controls. The AH samples were obtained from human donors [control (n = 35), POAG (n = 23)]. The AH samples were subjected to one-dimensional 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analyses on a Bruker Avance 600 MHz instrument with a 1.7 mM NMR probe. The same samples were then subjected to isotopic ratio outlier analysis (IROA) using a Q Exactive orbitrap mass spectrometer after chromatography on an Accela 600 HPLC. Clusterfinder Build 3.1.10 was used for identification and quantification based on long-term metabolite matrix standards. In total, 278 metabolites were identified in control samples and 273 in POAG AH. The metabolites identified were fed into previously reported proteome and genome information and the OmicsNet interaction network generator to construct a protein-metabolite interactions network with an embedded protein-protein network. Significant differences in metabolite composition in POAG compared to controls were identified indicating potential protein/gene pathways associated with these metabolites. These results will expand our previous understanding of the impeded AH metabolite composition, provide new insight into the regulation of AH outflow, and likely aid in future AH and trabecular meshwork multi-omics network analyses.
