RESUMO

Diboradiazene compounds, derived in one step from the boron-mediated reduction of dinitrogen (N2), were treated separately with sulfur and acetic anhydride, providing heterocyclic compounds that are BN isosteres of thiophene and 1,3-oxazole, respectively. These simple reactions represent the final steps in two-step routes to complex heterocycles from N2 that both circumvent the need for transition metal reagents and completely bypass the traditional intermediate ammonia.

RESUMO

Carbene-stabilized diborynes of the form LBBL (L=N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) or cyclic alkyl(amino)carbene (CAAC)) induce rapid, high yielding, intermolecular ortho-C-H borylation at N-heterocycles at room temperature. A simple pyridyldiborene is formed when an NHC-stabilized diboryne is combined with pyridine, while a CAAC-stabilized diboryne leads to activation of two pyridine molecules to give a tricyclic alkylideneborane, which can be forced to undergo a further H-shift resulting in a zwitterionic, doubly benzo-fused 1,3,2,5-diazadiborinine by heating. Use of the extended N-heteroaromatic quinoline leads to a borylmethyleneborane under mild conditions via an unprecedented boron-carbon exchange process.

RESUMO

The ruthenium-catalyzed cross-metathesis of alkenes and alkynes, which splits the alkene C═C double bond and couples one-half to each carbon of the alkyne C≡C triple bond, is one of the most efficient tools for the synthesis of 1,3-dienes, with wide-ranging applications, including pharmaceutical and polymer chemistry. In contrast, inorganic main-group metathesis reactions are restricted to a handful of examples of heavier p-block multiple bonds (P═P, Ge═Ge, and E≡E, E = Ge, Sn, Pb). We now report the first examples of thermally induced, transition-metal-free cross-metathesis between an organic alkyne and inorganic cyclic alkyl(amino)carbene (CAAC)-stabilized B═B double bonds, which yield fully planar, π-delocalized 1,8-diaza-3,6-diboraoctatetraenes. Density functional theory studies show that these compounds have an open-shell singlet biradical ground state with a thermally accessible closed-shell state. In-depth computational mechanistic analyses show that they are formed via a biradical cycloaddition-cycloreversion mechanism. Finally, unlike their organic counterparts, these B,N-analogues of octatetraene can undergo two-electron chemical reduction to form diamagnetic dianions.

RESUMO

The reductive coupling of an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) stabilized (dibromo)vinylborane yields a 1,2-divinyldiborene, which, although isoelectronic to a 1,3,5-triene, displays no extended π conjugation because of twisting of the C2 B2 C2 chain. While this divinyldiborene coordinates to copper(I) and platinum(0) in an η2 -B2 and η4 -C2 B2 fashion, respectively, it undergoes a complex rearrangement to an η4 -1,3-diborete upon complexation with nickel(0).

RESUMO

Narrow HOMO-LUMO gaps and high charge-carrier mobilities make larger acenes potentially high-efficient materials for organic electronic applications. The performance of such molecules was shown to significantly increase with increasing number of fused benzene rings. Bulk quantities, however, can only be obtained reliably for acenes up to heptacene. Theoretically, (oligo)acenes and (poly)acenes are predicted to have open-shell singlet biradical and polyradical ground states, respectively, for which experimental evidence is still scarce. We have now been able to dramatically lower the HOMO-LUMO gap of acenes without the necessity of unfavorable elongation of their conjugated π system, by incorporating two boron atoms into the anthracene skeleton. Stabilizing the boron centers with cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes gives neutral 9,10-diboraanthracenes, which are shown to feature disjointed, open-shell singlet biradical ground states.

RESUMO

The transformation of C-H bonds into more reactive C-M bonds amenable to further functionalization is of fundamental importance in synthetic chemistry. We demonstrate here that the transformation of neutral bismuth compounds into their cationic analogues can be used as a strategy to facilitate CH activation reactions. In particular, the double CH activation of bismuth-bound diphenyl amide, (NPh2 )- , is reported along with simple one-pot procedures for the functionalization of the activated positions. The organometallic products of the first and second CH activation steps were isolated in high yields. Analysis by NMR spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and DFT calculations revealed unusual ground-state properties (e.g., ring strain, moderate heteroaromaticity), and provided mechanistic insight into the formation of these compounds.

RESUMO

We report the H-type supramolecular polymerization of two new hydrophobic BODIPY derivatives equipped with ester and amide linkages. Whereas the ester-containing BODIPY derivative undergoes an isodesmic supramolecular polymerization in which the monomers are parallel-oriented, the replacement of the ester by amide groups leads to a highly cooperative self-assembly process into H-type aggregates with a rotational displacement of the dye molecules within the stack. The dye organization imposed by simultaneous π-π and hydrogen bonding interactions is the driving force for the cooperative supramolecular polymerization, whereas the absence of additional hydrogen bonds for the ester-containing moiety does not suffice to induce cooperative phenomena.

RESUMO

The chemistry of aluminacyclopentadienes, also known as alumoles, has experienced a resurgence in recent years, resulting in the preparation of a number of new entries in this class of compound. In contrast, their reactivity remains relatively unexplored. Thus far, their Lewis acid-base chemistry has been studied, as well as various ring-insertion reactions with unsaturated species such as alkynes and azides. Herein we present a range of new ring expansion reactions of an alumole with heteroatom-containing unsaturated species, providing novel six-, seven- and eight-membered cyclic products with high heteroatom content. Additionally, an unusual reaction was observed when the alumole was treated with morpholine-N-oxide, involving a stepwise insertion of two oxygen atoms, first into the exocyclic Al-C bond and then the endocyclic Al-C bond.

RESUMO

Major advances in the chemistry of 5th and 6th row heavy p-block element compounds have recently uncovered intriguing reactivity patterns towards small molecules such as H2, CO2, and ethylene. However, well-defined, homogeneous insertion reactions with carbon monoxide, one of the benchmark substrates in this field, have not been reported to date. We demonstrate here, that a cationic bismuth amide undergoes facile insertion of CO into the Bi-N bond under mild conditions. This approach grants direct access to the first cationic bismuth carbamoyl species. Its characterization by NMR, IR, and UV/vis spectroscopy, elemental analysis, single-crystal X-ray analysis, cyclic voltammetry, and DFT calculations revealed intriguing properties, such as a reversible electron transfer at the bismuth center and an absorption feature at 353 nm ascribed to a transition involving σ- and π-type orbitals of the bismuth-carbamoyl functionality. A combined experimental and theoretical approach provided insight into the mechanism of CO insertion. The substrate scope could be extended to isonitriles.
