RESUMO
The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of laser or LED phototherapy on the acceleration of bone formation at the midpalatal suture after rapid maxilla expansion. Forty-five rats were divided into groups at 7 days (control, expansion, expansion and laser irradiation, and expansion and LED irradiation) and into 14 days (expansion, expansion and laser in the 1st week, expansion and LED in the 1st week, expansion and laser in the 1st and 2nd weeks, expansion and LED in the 1st and 2nd weeks). Laser/LED irradiation occurred every 48 h. Expansion was accomplished with a spatula and maintained with a triple helicoid of 0.020-in stainless steel orthodontic wire. A diode laser (λ780 nm, 70 mW, spot of 0.04 cm2, t = 257 s, SAEF of 18 J/cm2) or a LED (λ850 ± 10 nm, 150 ± 10 mW, spot of 0.5 cm2, t = 120 s, SAEF of 18 J/cm2) was applied in one point in the midpalatal suture immediately behind the upper incisors. Raman spectroscopy and histological analyses of the suture region were carried and data was submitted to statistical analyses (p ≤ 0.05). Raman spectrum analysis demonstrated that irradiation increases hydroxyapatite in the midpalatal suture after expansion. In the histological analysis of various inflammation, there was a higher production of collagen and osteoblastic activity and less osteoclastic activity. The results showed that LED irradiation associated to rapid maxillary expansion improves bone repair and could be an alternative to the use of laser in accelerating bone formation in the midpalatal suture.

The aim of this study was to evaluate bone repair in anemic and non-anemic rats submitted or not to laser phototherapy and hydroxyapatite graft. Animals were divided in eight groups of five animals: Clot; Laser; Graft; Graft + Laser; iron deficiency anemia (IDA) + Clot; IDA + Laser; IDA + graft; IDA + graft + Laser. When appropriate irradiation with infrared laser was done during 15 days at a 48-h interval. Animals were killed at day 30; samples were analyzed by Raman spectroscopy. Three shifts were studied and statistically analyzed: ~960, ~1,070, and ~1,454 cm(-1). Graft + laser showed highest ~960 peak was statistically different from all other healthy groups. No statistical difference was found between Clot and IDA + Clot in any shift. The IDA + Graft and IDA + Graft + Laser groups had low mean peak values for shifts ~960, ~1,070, and ~1,454 cm(-1). The results in this study indicate that using hydroxyapatite (HA) and laser irradiation in healthy subjects is favorable to mineral deposition and bone maturation, this being of importance for some groups at risk, such as astronauts. In iron deficiency anemia cases, the use of graft, associated or not to laser irradiation, resulted in low collagen and low carbonate and phosphate HA.

The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of laser or light-emitting diode (LED) phototherapy on the bone formation at the midpalatal suture after rapid maxilla expansion. Twenty young adult male rats were divided into four groups with 8 days of experimental time: group 1, no treatment; group 2, expansion; group 3, expansion and laser irradiation; and group 4, expansion and LED irradiation. In groups 3 and 4, light irradiation was in the first, third, and fifth experimental days. In all groups, the expansion was accomplished with a helicoid 0.020" stainless steel orthodontic spring. A diode laser (λ780 nm, 70 mW, spot of 0.04 cm(2), t = 257 s, spatial average energy fluence (SAEF) of 18 J/cm(2)) or a LED (λ850 nm, 150 mW ± 10 mW, spot of 0.5 cm(2), t = 120 s, SAEF of 18 J/cm(2)) were used. The samples were analyzed by Raman spectroscopy carried out at midpalatal suture and at the cortical area close to the suture. Two Raman shifts were analyzed: â¼ 960 (phosphate hydroxyapatite) and â¼ 1,450 cm(-1) (lipids and protein). Data was submitted to statistical analysis. Significant statistical difference (p ≤ 0.05) was found in the hydroxyapatite (CHA) peaks among the expansion group and the expansion and laser or LED groups. The LED group presented higher mean peak values of CHA. No statistical differences were found between the treated groups as for collagen deposition, although LED also presented higher mean peak values. The results of this study using Raman spectral analysis indicate that laser and LED light irradiation improves deposition of CHA in the midpalatal suture after orthopedic expansion.

This study aimed to assess bone repair in defects grafted or not with hydroxyapatite (HA) on healthy and iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) rats submitted or not to LED phototherapy (LED-PT) by Raman spectroscopy. The animals were divided in eight groups with five rats each: Clot; Clot + LED; IDA + Clot; IDA + LED; Graft; Graft + LED; IDA + Graft; and IDA + Graft + LED. When appropriated, irradiation with IR LED (λ850 ± 10 nm, 150 mW, CW, Φ = 0.5 cm(2), 16 J/cm(2), 15 days) was carried out. Raman shifts: â¼ 960 [symmetric PO4 stretching (phosphate apatite)], â¼ 1,070 [symmetric CO3 stretching (B-type carbonate apatite)], and â¼ 1,454 cm(-1) [CH2/CH3 bending in organics (protein)] were analyzed. The mean peak values for â¼ 960, â¼ 1,070, and â¼ 1,454 cm(-1) were nonsignificantly different on healthy or anemic rats. The group IDA + Graft + LED showed the lowest mean values for the peak â¼ 960 cm(-1) when compared with the irradiated IDA group or not (p ≤ 0.001; p ≤ 0.001). The association of LED-PT and HA-graft showed lowest mean peak at â¼ 1,454 cm(-1) for the IDA rats. The results of this study indicated higher HA peaks as well as a decrease in the level of organic components on healthy animals when graft and LED phototherapy are associated. In the other hand, IDA condition interfered in the graft incorporation to the bone as LED phototherapy only improved bone repair when graft was not used.

AIM: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of orthodontic bonding with the use of a hydrophilic primer (Transbond Moisture-Insensitive Primer, 3M Unitek, Monrovia, Calif.), a self-etching primer (Transbond Plus Self-etching Primer, 3M Unitek, Monrovia, Calif.) and without primer application, in dry and saliva contaminated enamel surfaces. METHODS: Bovine incisors (60) were divided into 6 groups: (1) uncontaminated control (no primer), (2) control with saliva contamination (no primer), (3) uncontaminated self-etching primer, (4) saliva contamination before self-etching primer, (5) uncontaminated hydrophilic primer and (6) saliva contamination before hydrophilic primer. Stainless steel brackets were bonded with composite resin (Transbond XT, 3M Unitek, Monrovia, Calif.). After bonding, all samples were stored at 37±1ºC in a humidity environment until the shear bond strength test. RESULTS: Under dry uncontaminated enamel conditions comparable results were found between the control (1) and the self-etching primer (3), while the hydrophilic primer (5) presented higher bond strength. Under saliva contamination, a significant difference was found between the control (2) and the self-etching primer (4), however, there was no difference between the self-etching primer (4) and the hydrophilic primer group (6). CONCLUSION: Therefore, with moisture control, the use of a primer in order to achieve acceptable bond strength is not required. In clinical situations where there is a risk of saliva contamination either primer could be used.

This study aimed to investigate the influence of the moment of salivary contamination during the bonding procedure (before or after acid conditioning) on the microleakage around composite resin restorations. Sixty bovine incisors received two Class V preparations (one with dentin margins and other with enamel margins). Teeth were randomly assigned into three groups (n=20): 1) control (not contaminated); 2) salivary contamination before etching with 34% phosphoric acid; and, 3) salivary contamination after acid etching. Cavities were restored using Prime & Bond NT (Dentsply) adhesive system and TPH Spectrum (Dentsply) composite according to manufacturer instructions. Teeth were thermocycled (500x, 5-55daXC, 60s/bath), immersed in 2% methylene blue buffered solution (pH 7.0), and sectioned into two halves. Three examiners measured the extent of dye penetration on dentin and enamel margins in a stereoscope microscope, using four representative scores. Statistical analysis were performed with Kruskal-Wallis/Wilcoxon tests (ãï=5%). The results showed that enamel and dentin margins did not present significant differences (p>0.05). However, significantly higher dye penetration was observed on substrates etched and further contaminated with saliva. It was concluded that salivary contamination after acid etching increases the microleakage around composite resin restorations, especially at dentin margins. However, acid etching subsequent to the contamination can avoid negative effects on restorations margins.
