BACKGROUND: The drug retail represents the main area of activity for pharmacists worldwide. In Brazil, this sector is responsible for employing around 80% of professionals. Before this reality, the academic training of pharmacists requires specialized skills and knowledge so they can fulfill their tasks. In this sector, considering the influence of managers and mentors on the model of pharmaceutical practice, their perceptions about the demands of the market can help discussions related to the training of pharmacists. AIM: To analyze the academic training of pharmacists for the drug retail market from the perspective of managers and mentors. METHOD: This is a qualitative study conducted with managers and mentors of the drug retail market. A semi-structured interview guide was prepared and applied to the intentionally selected participants. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee under the number 4,169,752. The interviews were conducted through videoconference by an experienced researcher. The data obtained were analyzed using Bardin's analysis technique, following the steps of categorical thematic content analysis using the ATLAS.ti software. RESULTS: 19 interviews were carried out. Among the reports, the interviewees highlighted the importance of retail in the employability of pharmacists, as well as inconsistency in the academic training for this sector, originating the following categories: curriculum reform to include the market demands, follow-up and career plan, training for entrepreneurship and sales, practical application of knowledge, and encouragement of experience. CONCLUSION: Pharmaceutical academic training is linked to several challenges, whether organizational, structural, or budgetary. To overcome these challenges, it is necessary to unite the interested parties in the formulation and implementation of a strategy for the professionalization of pharmacists, considering their social role in patient care, aligned with the company's sustainability, so that both coexist.

Type-2 diabetes (T2D) is characterised by a dysregulation of metabolism, including skeletal muscle insulin resistance, mitochondrial dysfunction, and oxidative stress. Reactive species, such as methylglyoxal (MGO) and 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE), positively associate with T2D disease severity and can directly interfere with insulin signalling and glucose uptake in skeletal muscle by modifying cellular proteins. The multifunctional dipeptide carnosine, and its rate-limiting precursor ß-alanine, have recently been shown to improve glycaemic control in humans and rodents with diabetes. However, the precise mechanisms are unclear and research in human skeletal muscle is limited. Herein, we present novel findings in primary human T2D and lean healthy control (LHC) skeletal muscle cells. Cells were differentiated to myotubes, and treated with 10 mM carnosine, 10 mM ß-alanine, or control for 4-days. T2D cells had reduced ATP-linked and maximal respiration compared with LHC cells (p = 0.016 and p = 0.005). Treatment with 10 mM carnosine significantly increased insulin-stimulated glucose uptake in T2D cells (p = 0.047); with no effect in LHC cells. Insulin-stimulation increased MGO-modified proteins in T2D cells by 47%; treatment with carnosine attenuated this increase to 9.7% (p = 0.011). There was no effect treatment on cell viability or expression of other proteins. These findings suggest that the beneficial effects of carnosine on glycaemic control may be explained by its scavenging actions in human skeletal muscle.

Studying species interactions in nature often requires elaborated logistics and intense fieldwork. The difficulties in such task might hinder our ability to answer questions on how biotic interactions change with the environment. Fortunately, a workaround to this problem lies within scientific collections. For some animals, the inspection of preserved specimens can reveal the scars of past antagonistic encounters, such as predation attempts. A common defensive behaviour that leaves scars on animals is autotomy, the loss of a body appendage to escape predation. By knowing the collection site of preserved specimens, it is possible to assess the influence of organismal biology and the surrounding environment in the occurrence of autotomy. We gathered data on tail loss for 8189 preserved specimens of 33 snake and 11 amphisbaenian species to investigate biological and environmental correlates of autotomy in reptiles. We applied generalized linear mixed effect models to evaluate whether body size, sex, life-stage, habitat use, activity pattern, biome, tropicality, temperature and precipitation affect the probability of tail loss in limbless reptiles. We observed autotomy in 23.6% of examined specimens, with 18.7% of amphisbaenian and 33.4% of snake specimens showing tail loss. The probability of tail loss did not differ between snakes and amphisbaenians, but it was higher among large-sized specimens, particularly in adults and females. Chance of tail loss was higher for diurnal and arboreal species, and among specimens collected in warmer regions, but it was unaffected by biome, precipitation, and tropicality. Autotomy in limbless reptiles was affected by size-dependent factors that interplay with ontogeny and sexual dimorphism, although size-independent effects of life-stage and sex also shaped behavioural responses to predators. The increase in probability of tail loss with verticality and diurnality suggests a risk-balance mechanism between species habitat use and activity pattern. Although autotomy is more likely in warmer regions, it seems unrelated to seasonal differences in snakes and amphisbaenians activity. Our findings reveal several processes related to predator-prey interactions involving limbless reptiles, demonstrating the importance of scientific collections to unveil ecological mechanisms at different spatio-temporal scales.

Intraosseous myofibroma is a rare tumor of benign nature, slow growth, and low morbidity. The aim of this article is to report a case of pathologic fracture associated with the incidental diagnosis of myofibroma in the mandible of an adolescent. A 15-year-old girl reported that she experienced a physical assault resulting in facial injuries 1 month previously and had since experienced severe pain, malocclusion, and chewing difficulty. The cone beam computed tomographic examination revealed multiple features suggestive of pathologic fracture associated with a hypodense lesion with lobulated limits, as well as expansion and thinning of the cortical bone in the left mandible. The histopathologic diagnosis of the lesion indicated myofibroma. Treatment consisted of enucleation and curettage of the lesion with reduction and internal fixation of the fracture. After 18 months, the osteosynthesis plates and an impacted mandibular third molar were removed. Curettage of the lesion in association with treatment of the mandibular fracture proved to be effective for both bone consolidation and absence of recurrence while restoring mandibular functionality.

OBJECTIVE: For transgender women (TW) on oestrogen therapy, the effects of prior exposure to testosterone during puberty on their performance, mainly cardiopulmonary capacity (CPC), while exerting physical effort are unknown. Our objective was to evaluate CPC and muscle strength in TW undergoing long-term gender-affirming hormone therapy. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out with 15 TW (34.2±5.2 years old), 13 cisgender men (CM) and 14 cisgender women (CW). The TW received hormone therapy for 14.4±3.5 years. Bioimpedance, the hand grip test and cardiopulmonary exercise testing on a treadmill with an incremental effort were performed. RESULTS: The mean VO2peak (L/min) was 2606±416.9 in TW, 2167±408.8 in CW and 3358±436.3 in CM (TW vs CW, p<0.05; TW vs CM, p<0.0001; CW vs CM, p<0.0001). The O2 pulse in TW was between that in CW and CM (TW vs CW, p<0.05, TW vs CM, p<0.0001). There was a high correlation between VO2peak and fat-free mass/height2 among TW (r=0.7388; p<0.01), which was not observed in the other groups. The mean strength (kg) was 35.3±5.4 in TW, 29.7±3.6 in CW and 48.4±6.7 in CM (TW vs CW, p<0.05; TW vs CM, p<0.0001). CONCLUSION: CPC in non-athlete TW showed an intermediate pattern between that in CW and CM. The mean strength and VO2 peak in non-athlete TW while performing physical exertion were higher than those in non-athlete CW and lower than those in CM.

We evaluated whether insulin could stimulate ß-alanine uptake by skeletal muscle cells in vitro. Mouse myoblasts (C2C12) (n = 3 wells per condition) were cultured with ß-alanine (350 or 700 µmol·L-1), with insulin (100 µU·mL-1) either added to the media or not. Insulin stimulated the ß-alanine uptake at the lower (350 µmol·L-1) but not higher (700 µmol·L-1) ß-alanine concentration in culture medium, indicating that transporter saturation might blunt the stimulatory effects of insulin.

Primary Hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) often leads to bone loss, even in its asymptomatic presentations. Trabecular Bone Score (TBS) is a method to assess the trabecular bone structure of the spine. This study aimed to evaluate TBS measurements combined with Dual X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) values in the search for more accurate bone fragility risk assessment among PHPT patients. From 2017 to 2019, patients diagnosed with PHPT (n = 64), before surgery, were invited to participate in this study. Bone mineral density (BMD) by DXA at the lumbar spine, total hip, femoral neck, distal third radius, and TBS were determined in patients and controls (n = 63). The vertebral fracture was defined using the Genant method in vertebral images by DXA and vertebral fracture assessment (VFA). Patients and controls did not differ in age, sex, menopausal status, or body mass index (BMI). The PHPT patients presented significantly lower BMD values than the controls in all sites evaluated. The TBS measurements were also statistically lower in PHPT patients than controls (mean TBS PHPT = 1.233 vs TBS controls = 1.280, p = 0.044). Osteoporosis was observed in 50% of PHPT patients and 26.6% of controls (p = 0.02). However, lumbar spine T-Score < -2.5 was observed only in 21.8% of PHPT patients. Vertebral fractures were detected in nine individuals (14%) from the PHPT group and four (6.3%) in the controls (p = 0.24). The TBS area under the curve (AUC) was higher than DXA AUC in all sites, for vertebral fracture assessment. The TBS AUC was significant in the PHPT group (0.75, 95% CI 0.62 - 0.88, p = 0.02) and not significant in the DXA analysis. The ROC curve showed that TBS values < 1.187 are associated with a significantly higher risk of vertebral fracture among PHPT patients (p = 0.02). The TBS used as a complement to DXA measurements is a useful tool which may better assess fragility risk among PHPT patients.

To test whether high circulating insulin concentrations influence the transport of ß-alanine into skeletal muscle at either saturating or subsaturating ß-alanine concentrations, we conducted two experiments whereby ß-alanine and insulin concentrations were controlled. In experiment 1, 12 men received supraphysiological amounts of ß-alanine intravenously (0.11 g·kg-1·min-1 for 150 min), with or without insulin infusion. ß-Alanine and carnosine were measured in muscle before and 30 min after infusion. Blood samples were taken throughout the infusion protocol for plasma insulin and ß-alanine analyses. ß-Alanine content in 24-h urine was assessed. In experiment 2, six men ingested typical doses of ß-alanine (10 mg/kg) before insulin infusion or no infusion. ß-Alanine was assessed in muscle before and 120 min following ingestion. In experiment 1, no differences between conditions were shown for plasma ß-alanine, muscle ß-alanine, muscle carnosine and urinary ß-alanine concentrations (all P > 0.05). In experiment 2, no differences between conditions were shown for plasma ß-alanine or muscle ß-alanine concentrations (all P > 0.05). Hyperinsulinemia did not increase ß-alanine uptake by skeletal muscle cells, neither when substrate concentrations exceed the Vmax of ß-alanine transporter TauT nor when it was below saturation. These results suggest that increasing insulin concentration is not necessary to maximize ß-alanine transport into muscle following ß-alanine intake.

Laminin peptides influence cancer biology. We investigated the role of a laminin-derived peptide C16 regulating invadopodia molecules in human prostate cancer cells (DU145). C16 augmented invadopodia activity of DU145 cells, and stimulated expression Tks4, Tks5, cortactin, and membrane-type matrix metalloproteinase 1. Reactive oxygen species generation is also related to invadopodia formation. This prompted us to address whether C16 would induce reactive oxygen species generation in DU145 cells. Quantitative fluorescence and flow cytometry showed that the peptide C16 increased reactive oxygen species in DU145 cells. Furthermore, significant colocalization between Tks5 and reactive oxygen species was observed in C16-treated cells. Results suggested that the peptide C16 increased Tks5 and reactive oxygen species in prostate cancer cells. The role of C16 increasing Tks and reactive oxygen species are novel findings on invadopodia activity.

Standard diagnostic methods currently in use for the identification of helminth infections in ruminants are based on the morphological analysis of immature and adult stages of parasites. This paper describes a method for the semiquantitative identification of nematodes, mainly Trichostrongyloidea, at species-level resolution. The method is based on amplification and fragment analysis followed by minisequencing of the ITS-2 region (internal transcribed spacer 2) of the ribosomal DNA of parasite eggs or larvae. This method allows for the identification of seven genera (Chabertia, Cooperia, Haemonchus, Oesophagostomum, Ostertagia, Teladorsagia, and Trichostrongylus) and 12 species (Chabertia ovina, Cooperia curticei, Cooperia punctata, Cooperia oncophora/Cooperia surnabada, Haemonchus contortus, Haemonchus placei, Haemonchus longistipes, Oesophagostomum asperum, Oesophagostomum radiatum, Ostertagia ostertagi, Trichostrongylus axei, and Trichostrongylus colubriformis) of infectious nematodes of domestic ruminants. The concordance between the morphological and molecular analyses in the detection of genera ranged from 0.84 to 0.99, suggesting the proposed detection method is specific, semiquantitative, less laborious, and highly cost-efficient.

This study aimed to evaluate, through histomorphometric analysis, the bone repair process in the tibia of rats treated with zoledronic acid and submitted to 808-nm low-level laser therapy (LLLT) by using arsenide aluminum gallium laser. For this purpose, 20 rats were used and distributed according to treatment: group 1-saline administration; group 2-treated with LLLT; group 3-treated with zoledronic acid; and group 4-treated with zoledronic acid and LLLT. The zoledronic acid was administered at a dose of 0.035 mg/kg every 2 weeks for 8 weeks. Subsequently, bone defects of 2 mm were prepared in the tibias of all groups. The bone defects in groups 2 and 4 were irradiated with LLLT in the immediate post-operative period. After 14 and 28 days of application, the animals were submitted and euthanized for histomorphometric analysis. The results were submitted to statistical analysis (α = 5%), and the intragroup comparison was performed using the t test. On the other hand, for intergroup comparison, the ANOVA test was performed, and to the groups presenting statistically significant difference, the Student-Newman-Keuls test was used. In intergroup comparison, group 1 (mean ± SD= 45.2 ± 18.56%) showed a lower bone formation compared with groups 2 (64.13 ± 3.51%) (p = 0.358) and 4 (15.2 ± 78.22%) (p = 0.049), at the 14-day period. Group 3 (20.99 ± 7.42%) also presented a lower amount of neoformed bone tissue, with statistically significant difference when compared with groups 1 (p = 0.002), 2, and 4 (p ≤ 0,001). After 28 days, group 1 presented a lower amount of neoformed bone tissue compared with the other groups, with p = 0.020. Thus, it was concluded that LLLT associated with zoledronic acid is effective for stimulating bone formation in surgically created defects in rats, at the periods studied.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of telephone educational interventions on the duration and exclusiveness of breastfeeding. METHOD: A systematic review of the literature was conducted including only Randomized Clinical Trials. The exposure factor was an educational intervention via telephone, and the outcomes were duration and exclusiveness of breastfeeding. Literature in Portuguese, English and Spanish published between 2010 and 2016 were searched for in the Cochrane, Lilacs, Medline and Scopus databases. The articles were analyzed through a results synthesis. RESULTS: 241 articles were identified, of which 231 did not meet the inclusion criteria. Therefore, only 10 articles were reviewed. Four studies showed no efficacy related to breastfeeding. Regarding common characteristics, these studies were performed in short periods and in pairs. The others revealed efficacy regarding duration and/or exclusiveness of breastfeeding. The latter were mostly studies with long-term interventions and carried out by nurse lactation consultants. CONCLUSION: The evidence demonstrates that the telephone is a viable technology for promoting breastfeeding, representing an alternative for the health units and health professionals that can contribute to mother-baby care.

With ageing, bone tissue undergoes significant compositional, architectural and metabolic alterations potentially leading to osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is the most prevalent bone disorder, which is characterised by progressive bone weakening and an increased risk of fragility fractures. Although this metabolic disease is conventionally associated with ageing and menopause, the predisposing factors are thought to be established during childhood and adolescence. In light of this, exercise interventions implemented during maturation are likely to be highly beneficial as part of a long-term strategy to maximise peak bone mass and hence delay the onset of age- or menopause-related osteoporosis. This notion is supported by data on exercise interventions implemented during childhood and adolescence, which confirmed that weight-bearing activity, particularly if undertaken during peripubertal development, is capable of generating a significant osteogenic response leading to bone anabolism. Recent work on human ageing and epigenetics suggests that undertaking exercise after the fourth decade of life is still important, given the anti-ageing effect and health benefits provided, potentially occurring via a delay in telomere shortening and modification of DNA methylation patterns associated with ageing. Exercise is among the primary modifiable factors capable of influencing bone health by preserving bone mass and strength, preventing the death of bone cells and anti-ageing action provided.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Osteoporosis is well recognized as a cirrhosis complication; however, most studies assessing this condition included only patients on liver transplantation lists with an elevated rate of bone diseases. While general population studies show that handgrip strength is clearly associated with bone mineral density, until now this tool has not been applied to patients with cirrhosis in relation to their bone condition. This study aimed to evaluate whether handgrip strength, bone, and liver tests may be useful as predictors of bone disease in outpatients with cirrhosis. METHODS: One hundred twenty-nine subjects were included (77 men and 52 women). Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was applied to evaluate lumbar-spine and femoral-neck T scores. Osteoporosis/osteopenia rates were 26.3%/35.6% in the lumbar spine and 6.9%/41.8% in the femoral neck, respectively. Model selections were based on backward procedures to find the best predictors of low T scores. RESULTS: For lumbar spine, only low handgrip strength and high parathyroid hormone levels were clearly related to low T scores. For femoral neck, only age was associated with low T scores. CONCLUSIONS: Handgrip strength may serve as an effective predictor of low lumbar spine T score among outpatients with cirrhosis. As cirrhosis affects the lumbar spine more than the femoral neck, these results suggest that handgrip strength should be tested in all patients with cirrhosis as a first indicator of bone health.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is an age-related muscle disease that increases the risk of falls, disabilities, and death. It is associated with increased muscle protein degradation driven by molecular signalling pathways including Akt and FOXO1. This study aims to identify genes, gene interactions, and molecular pathways and processes associated with muscle aging and exercise in older adults that remained undiscovered until now leveraging on an artificial intelligence approach called artificial neural network inference (ANNi). METHODS: Four datasets reporting the profile of muscle transcriptome obtained by RNA-seq of young (21-43 years) and older adults (63-79 years) were selected and retrieved from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) data repository. Two datasets contained the transcriptome profiles associated to muscle aging and two the transcriptome linked to resistant exercise in older adults, the latter before and after 6 months of exercise training. Each dataset was individually analysed by ANNi based on a swarm neural network approach integrated into a deep learning model (Intelligent Omics). This allowed us to identify top 200 genes influencing (drivers) or being influenced (targets) by aging or exercise and the strongest interactions between such genes. Downstream gene ontology (GO) analysis of these 200 genes was performed using Metacore (Clarivate™) and the open-source software, Metascape. To confirm the differential expression of the genes showing the strongest interactions, real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) was employed on human muscle biopsies obtained from eight young (25 ± 4 years) and eight older men (78 ± 7.6 years), partaking in a 6-month resistance exercise training programme. RESULTS: CHAD, ZDBF2, USP54, and JAK2 were identified as the genes with the strongest interactions predicting aging, while SCFD1, KDM5D, EIF4A2, and NIPAL3 were the main interacting genes associated with long-term exercise in older adults. RT-qPCR confirmed significant upregulation of USP54 (P = 0.005), CHAD (P = 0.03), and ZDBF2 (P = 0.008) in the aging muscle, while exercise-related genes were not differentially expressed (EIF4A2 P = 0.99, NIPAL3 P = 0.94, SCFD1 P = 0.94, and KDM5D P = 0.64). GO analysis related to skeletal muscle aging suggests enrichment of pathways linked to bone development (adj P-value 0.006), immune response (adj P-value <0.001), and apoptosis (adj P-value 0.01). In older exercising adults, these were ECM remodelling (adj P-value <0.001), protein folding (adj P-value <0.001), and proteolysis (adj P-value <0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Using ANNi and RT-qPCR, we identified three strongly interacting genes predicting muscle aging, ZDBF2, USP54, and CHAD. These findings can help to inform the design of nonpharmacological and pharmacological interventions that prevent or mitigate sarcopenia.

Intermittent and continuous mechanical loads are known to influence osteogenic activity. The present study examines the effects of matched intermittent and continuous load in vitro on bone formation markers. MC3T3 (mouse pre-osteoblasts) were cultured and placed in a bioreactor to undergo continuous, intermittent, or unloading for 1, 3 and 12 days. Loading conditions were matched for magnitude, duration and frequency. Each time point was analysed for alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, procollagen 1 N-terminal propeptide (PINP) and alizarin red staining (ARS). Intermittent load caused an increase in ALP activity across all time points compared to continuous loading (↑30%-59%) and unloaded conditions (↑70%-90%). PINP concentrations from intermittent load were lower than continuous load (↓112%) on day 3. However, no differences were observed in PINP concentrations between loading conditions at other time points. No differences were observed for ARS between loading conditions. Intermittent load caused an increase in bone formation marker ALP, but not PINP, when compared to continuous loading and unloaded conditions. These findings further our knowledge in bone formation response and provide additional tools for the analysis of osteogenesis in vitro.

OBJECTIVES: To characterize which strategies of professional identity formation and professionalism are being used in Pharmacy. FINDINGS: We gathered 5004 articles from 5 databases with the descriptors "pharmacy" "professionalism," "professional identity" and their synonyms. The professional identity is a set of values and behaviors common among professionals. Professionalism is the moral compass of these values, used as a strategy to own social authenticity. After excluding duplicate texts, analyzing titles, abstracts, and full articles, 17 studies met the inclusion criteria and presented strategies for the formation of professional identity and professionalism in pharmacy students. We did not find studies with pharmacists. The quality of reports was assessed using 2 instruments recommended by the literature. All studies were conducted from 2007 onwards, and the United States is the country with the most publications. The identified strategies consisted of extracurricular activities, thematic courses, lectures, and counseling sessions and did not follow standards of theoretical reference, method, execution, duration, and effectiveness of evaluation. SUMMARY: The interest of Pharmacy about professional identity and professionalism has grown substantially in recent years. Teaching strategies are essential alternatives to improve professionalism, reinforce its importance, and acknowledge its heterogeneity and differences. For that, they must be in line with the aims of the profession in society. This review highlights the need to develop standardized and reproducible teaching strategies to guarantee the effectiveness of students' professional socialization during graduation, as well as to instruct professionals to deal with the changes in the profession, increasing the influence of Pharmacy in society.

The aims of this study were to determine anti-müllerian hormone (AMH) cutoff values for selecting Gir (Bos taurus indicus) oocyte donors and estimate the impact of using AMH concentrations as a selection criterion. In Exp. 1, Gir heifers (n=120) were sampled for AMH analysis and submitted to ovum pick-up and in vitro embryo production (OPU-IVEP). AMH cutoff values were calculated using ROC analysis or, alternatively, by the successive exclusion of heifers with the lowest AMH values. The correlations between AMH and OPU-IVEP outcomes were significant (P<0.001), though low or moderate (r= 0.34-0.52). We estimated an improvement (P<0.05) after the use of AMH cutoff values to select donors of +15.3% for total oocyes, +19.4% for viable COC, and +23.4% for blastocysts. This selection pressure, however, led to the exclusion of 32.8%, 37.9%, and 50.0% of the initial potential donors, respectively. In Exp. 2, we analyzed data from OPU-IVEP sessions of 658 Gir donors with known genomic values for predicted transmitting ability for milk (GPTAm) and age at first calving (GPTAafc). The selection based on the number of oocytes recovered had no effect (P>0.05) on the average GPTAm nor GPTAafc values of the remaining donors. In summary, plasma AMH ≥700 pg/mL is a cutoff value that can be used to select Gir heifers with a greater potential as oocyte donors. Nevertheless, this selection leads to the exclusion of up to 50% of potential donors. Finally, exclusion of poor responders had no effect on mean genomic estimates for milk production or age at first calving in the selected subset of donors.

New licuri-based kefir beverages were obtained using water kefir grains as fermentation inoculum (1, 2.5, and 5%) under different fermentation times (24 and 48 h). Metagenomic sequencing of the kefir grains adapted to the aqueous licuri extract revealed Lactobacillus hilgardii and Brettanomyces bruxellensis to be predominant in this inoculum. The excellent adaptation of the kefir grains to the licuri extract raised the possibility of prebiotic action of these almonds. The beverages showed acidity values between 0.33 ± 0.00 and 0.88 ± 0.00 mg lactic acid/100 mL and pH between 3.52 ± 0.01 and 4.29 ± 0.04. The viability of lactic acid bacteria in the fermented beverages was equal to or greater than 108 CFU/mL, while yeasts were between 104 and 105 CFU/mL. There were significant differences (p < 0.05) in the proximate composition of the formulations, especially in the protein (1.37 ± 0.33-2.16 ± 0.84) and carbohydrate (5.86 ± 0.19-11.51 ± 1.26) contents. In addition, all the samples showed good stability in terms of acidity, pH, and viability for LAB and yeasts during 28 days of storage (4 °C). Overall, the beverages showed a dominant yellow-green color, non-Newtonian pseudoplastic behavior, and high mean scores in the sensory evaluation. This study provided evidence of the emerging potential of licuri in the plant-based beverage industry.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a stealthy and progressive neurological disorder that is a leading cause of dementia in the global elderly population, imposing a significant burden on both the elderly and society. Currently, the condition is treated with medications that alleviate symptoms. Nonetheless, these drugs may not consistently produce the desired results and can cause serious side effects. Hence, there is a vigorous pursuit of alternative options to enhance the quality of life for patients. Ginkgo biloba (GB), an herb with historical use in traditional medicine, contains bioactive compounds such as terpenoids (Ginkgolides A, B, and C), polyphenols, organic acids, and flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol, and isorhamnetin). These compounds are associated with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective properties, making them valuable for cognitive health. A systematic search across three databases using specific keywords-GB in AD and dementia-yielded 1702 documents, leading to the selection of 15 clinical trials for synthesis. In eleven studies, GB extract/EGb 761® was shown to improve cognitive function, neuropsychiatric symptoms, and functional abilities in both dementia types. In four studies, however, there were no significant differences between the GB-treated and placebo groups. Significant improvements were observed in scores obtained from the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Short Cognitive Performance Test (SKT), and Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI). While the majority of synthesized clinical trials show that Ginkgo biloba has promising potential for the treatment of these conditions, more research is needed to determine optimal dosages, effective delivery methods, and appropriate pharmaceutical formulations. Furthermore, a thorough assessment of adverse effects, exploration of long-term use implications, and investigation into potential drug interactions are critical aspects that must be carefully evaluated in future studies.
