RESUMO

The final fate of massive stars, and the nature of the compact remnants they leave behind (black holes and neutron stars), are open questions in astrophysics. Many massive stars are stripped of their outer hydrogen envelopes as they evolve. Such Wolf-Rayet stars1 emit strong and rapidly expanding winds with speeds greater than 1,000 kilometres per second. A fraction of this population is also helium-depleted, with spectra dominated by highly ionized emission lines of carbon and oxygen (types WC/WO). Evidence indicates that the most commonly observed supernova explosions that lack hydrogen and helium (types Ib/Ic) cannot result from massive WC/WO stars2,3, leading some to suggest that most such stars collapse directly into black holes without a visible supernova explosion4. Here we report observations of SN 2019hgp, beginning about a day after the explosion. Its short rise time and rapid decline place it among an emerging population of rapidly evolving transients5-8. Spectroscopy reveals a rich set of emission lines indicating that the explosion occurred within a nebula composed of carbon, oxygen and neon. Narrow absorption features show that this material is expanding at high velocities (greater than 1,500 kilometres per second), requiring a compact progenitor. Our observations are consistent with an explosion of a massive WC/WO star, and suggest that massive Wolf-Rayet stars may be the progenitors of some rapidly evolving transients.

The shift in food consumption pattern to accommodate an array of bioactive compounds in foods with minimum calorie intake has resulted in the development of many novel beverages in the last decade. In the present study, optimization of apricot (AP; 0-50%) blended Aloe vera (AV; 50-100%) based low-calorie beverage functionally enriched with aonla juice (AJ; 3,5,7,10%) using steviol glycoside (SG; 0-100%) was performed. The preliminary screening suggested that 40% addition of AP (AV-AP; 60:40) had an acceptable taste. While, for functional enrichment of squash, incorporation of 7% AJ with 40ºB TSS was optimized based on color, consistency, taste, and overall acceptability scores. The developed squash had higher ascorbic acid (26.83 mg/100 g), total phenols (68.77 mg/100 g), antioxidant potential (36.50%) and antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (18.00 mm). The aloin content was recorded 0.9 ppm, well within the maximum permissible limits. Additionally, replacement of sucrose with stevioside up to 50 per cent resulted in equi-sweetness level without characteristic bitter aftertaste and a significant reduction in energy value from 142 kcal/100 g to 85.26 kcal/100 g. The developed beverage recorded a high amount of functional compounds with reduced energy values. The beverage can be a recommendation for general consumption for health- conscious people to cover their functional food desires.

BACKGROUND: Valeriana jatamansi Jones is a medicinal plant of the Himalayan region with high trade value. Since overexploitation of this wild species led it to be listed as threatened, a comprehensive conservation strategy is needed. Cryopreservation would be a useful complementary method to conventional conservation methods. OBJECTIVE: To develop a cryopreservation protocol for V. jatamansi with maintenance of biosynthetic stability of regenerants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In vitro shoot tips were cryopreserved using vitrification with either PVS2 or PVS3 and the efficacy of the two cryoprotectant mixtures compared. Regenerated plantlets were evaluated by HPLC analysis for contents of four valepotriates viz. valtrate, acevaltrate, didrovaltrate and IVHD valtrate. RESULTS: The highest shoot recovery (91.6%) after transfer to liquid nitrogen was obtained when shoot tips were treated with PVS2 at 0°C for 110 min, which was significantly higher than the highest recovery (73.3%) obtained using PVS3 for any duration tested. Evaluation of biosynthetic stability showed no variation in valepotriate contents between in vitro maintained and cryopreserved derived plantlets. CONCLUSION: This protocol will be useful for the long-term conservation of this species as high frequency recovery and biosynthetic stability after cryopreservation were obtained.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Population-based seroepidemiological studies measure the extent of SARS-CoV-2 infection in a country. We report the findings of the first round of a national serosurvey, conducted to estimate the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection among adult population of India. METHODS: From May 11 to June 4, 2020, a randomly sampled, community-based survey was conducted in 700 villages/wards, selected from the 70 districts of the 21 States of India, categorized into four strata based on the incidence of reported COVID-19 cases. Four hundred adults per district were enrolled from 10 clusters with one adult per household. Serum samples were tested for IgG antibodies using COVID Kavach ELISA kit. All positive serum samples were re-tested using Euroimmun SARS-CoV-2 ELISA. Adjusting for survey design and serial test performance, weighted seroprevalence, number of infections, infection to case ratio (ICR) and infection fatality ratio (IFR) were calculated. Logistic regression was used to determine the factors associated with IgG positivity. RESULTS: Total of 30,283 households were visited and 28,000 individuals were enrolled. Population-weighted seroprevalence after adjusting for test performance was 0.73 per cent [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.34-1.13]. Males, living in urban slums and occupation with high risk of exposure to potentially infected persons were associated with seropositivity. A cumulative 6,468,388 adult infections (95% CI: 3,829,029-11,199,423) were estimated in India by the early May. The overall ICR was between 81.6 (95% CI: 48.3-141.4) and 130.1 (95% CI: 77.0-225.2) with May 11 and May 3, 2020 as plausible reference points for reported cases. The IFR in the surveyed districts from high stratum, where death reporting was more robust, was 11.72 (95% CI: 7.21-19.19) to 15.04 (9.26-24.62) per 10,000 adults, using May 24 and June 1, 2020 as plausible reference points for reported deaths. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSIONS: Seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 was low among the adult population in India around the beginning of May 2020. Further national and local serosurveys are recommended to better inform the public health strategy for containment and mitigation of the epidemic in various parts of the country.

In this article, we develop a mathematical model considering susceptible, exposed, infected, asymptotic, quarantine/isolation and recovered classes as in case of COVID-19 disease. The facility of quarantine/isolation have been provided to both exposed and infected classes. Asymptotic individuals either recovered without undergo treatment or moved to infected class after some duration. We have formulated the reproduction number for the proposed model. Elasticity and sensitivity analysis indicates that model is more sensitive towards the transmission rate from exposed to infected classes rather than transmission rate from susceptible to exposed class. Analysis of global stability for the proposed model is studied through Lyapunov's function.

Strobilomyces is broadly distributed geographically and serves an important ecological function. However, it has been difficult to delimit species within the genus, primarily due to developmental variations and phenotypic plasticity. To elucidate phylogenetic relationships among species within the genus and to understand its species diversity, especially in Asia, materials of the genus collected from five continents (Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and North/Central America) were investigated. The phylogeny of Strobilomyces was reconstructed based on nucleotide sequences of four genes coding for: the largest and the second largest subunits of the RNA polymerase II (RPB1 and RPB2); the translation elongation factor subunit 1-α (TEF1); and the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit 3 (COX3). The combined results based on molecular phylogenetics, morphological characters, host tree associations, and geographical distribution patterns support a new classification consisting of two sections, sect. Strobilomyces and sect. Echinati. Using the genealogical concordance phylogenetic species recognition (GCPSR) approach, at least 33 phylogenetic species in Asia can be delimited, all of which are supported by morphological features, and five phylogenetic species remain to be described. The mountainous region of Southwest China is especially special, containing at least 21 species and likely represents a centre of diversification. We further compared our specimens with the type specimens of 25 species of Strobilomyces. Our comparisons suggest that, there are a total of 31 distinct species, while S. sanmingensis, S. verruculosus, S. subnigricans, and S. zangii/S. areolatus, are synonyms of S. mirandus, S. giganteus, S. alpinus and S. seminudus, respectively. Eight new species, namely, S. albidus, S. anthracinus, S. calidus, S. cingulatus, S. densisquamosus, S. douformis, S. microreticulatus and S. pinophilus, are described. A dichotomous key to the Asian Strobilomyces species is provided.

BACKGROUND: Microscopic observation drug susceptibility (MODS) assay has been suggested as a low cost method for rapid, accurate detection of tuberculosis (TB) and multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). METHODS: A total of 2424 samples collected from 1063 eligible patients of suspected pulmonary or extrapulmonary TB were subjected to MODS assay. Performance of MODS was compared with culture and drug susceptibility testing (DST) by conventional solid Lowenstein-Jensen (LJ) media or liquid Mycobacteria Growth Indicator Tube (MGIT) culture. RESULTS: When compared to reference gold standard of positivity in either solid or liquid reference culture, the MODS assay had sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of 91.3%, 98.2%, 96.0% and 95.9% respectively. MODS took a median time of 10.3 days to culture positivity as compared to 13.8 days using MGIT and 30.5 days using LJ culture. Culture and DST being concurrent in MODS, the median turnaround time for DST was the same as that for culture i.e. 10.3 days. The overall median turn around time for culture positivity and DST using manual MGIT and LJ medium was 23.6 days and 61.2 days respectively. The concordance between MODS culture and the reference susceptibility method was 97.7% for rifampicin, 95.6% for isoniazid, 98.5% for rifampicin and isoniazid. The cost of performing a single MODS assay was INR 200. CONCLUSION: MODS is a rapid and sensitive, yet simple and inexpensive test that may be helpful to enhance diagnostic accuracy, and case detection of TB and MDR-TB in resource constrained settings.

Fracture liaison services (FLS) have been demonstrated to improve outcomes following osteoporotic fracture. The aim of this systematic literature review (SLR) was to determine the characteristics of an FLS that lead to improved patient outcomes. We conducted a SLR, including articles published between 2000 and February 2017, using global (Medline, EMBASE, PubMed and Cochrane Library) and local databases. Studies including patients aged ≥ 50 years with osteoporotic fractures enrolled in an FLS were assessed. Information extracted from each article included key person coordinating the FLS (physician, nurse or other healthcare professional), setting (hospital vs community), intensity (single vs multiple), duration (long vs short term), fracture type and gender. A meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials was conducted based on the key person coordinating the FLS. Out of 7236 articles, 57 were considered to be high quality and identified for further analysis. The SLR identified several components which contributed to FLS success, including multidisciplinary involvement, driven by a dedicated case manager, regular assessment and follow-up, multifaceted interventions and patient education. Meta-analytic data confirm the effectiveness of an FLS following an osteoporotic fracture: approximate 27% increase in the likelihood of BMD testing and up to 21% increase in the likelihood of treatment initiation compared with usual care. The balance of evidence indicates that the multifaceted FLS and dedicated coordination are important success factors that contribute to effective FLS interventions which reduce fracture-related morbidity and mortality.

Eighty two samples of dried quince seeds, obtained from the markets of Jammu province, were examined for mycoflora by different isolation techniques. A total of 27 fungal species belonging to 11 genera were recovered and identified from these samples. The predominant fungal genera encountered were Aspergillus, Penicillium and Fusarium. In view of the predominance of Aspergillus flavus, a known producer of aflatoxins, screening of the fungal contaminated samples was carried out for total aflatoxin levels using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Twenty one aflatoxin positive samples contained 8.07-33.45 µg g(-1) and 0.05-3946.97 µg g(-1) AFB1 and AFB2 respectively. These results suggest that biochemical composition of dried quince seeds, along with climatic conditions of the region seem to be very favourable for aflatoxin production by toxigenic strains of A. flavus. Therefore, monitoring of aflatoxins in dried quince seeds is recommended for this region.

A novel algorithm has been developed and validated to isolate individual papermaking fibres in micro-computed tomographic images of paper handsheets as a first step to characterize the structure of the paper. The three-step fibre segmentation algorithm segments the papermaking fibres by (i) tracking the hollow inside the fibres via a modified connected component methodology, (ii) extracting the fibre walls using a distance transform and (iii) labelling the fibres through collapsed sections by a final refinement step. Furthermore, postprocessing algorithms have been developed to calculate the length and coarseness of the segmented fibres. The fibre segmentation algorithm is the first ever reported method for the automated segmentation of the tortuous three-dimensional morphology of papermaking fibres within microstructural images of paper handsheets. The method is not limited to papermaking fibres, but can be applied to any material consisting of tortuous and hollow fibres.

The gallium nitride (GaN)-based buffer/barrier mode of growth and morphology, the transistor electrical response (25-310 °C) and the nanoscale pattern of a homoepitaxial AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) have been investigated at the micro and nanoscale. The low channel sheet resistance and the enhanced heat dissipation allow a highly conductive HEMT transistor (Ids > 1 A mm(-1)) to be defined (0.5 A mm(-1) at 300 °C). The vertical breakdown voltage has been determined to be ∼850 V with the vertical drain-bulk (or gate-bulk) current following the hopping mechanism, with an activation energy of 350 meV. The conductive atomic force microscopy nanoscale current pattern does not unequivocally follow the molecular beam epitaxy AlGaN/GaN morphology but it suggests that the FS-GaN substrate presents a series of preferential conductive spots (conductive patches). Both the estimated patches density and the apparent random distribution appear to correlate with the edge-pit dislocations observed via cathodoluminescence. The sub-surface edge-pit dislocations originating in the FS-GaN substrate result in barrier height inhomogeneity within the HEMT Schottky gate producing a subthreshold current.

A field experiment was conducted on bearing vines of kiwifruit cv. Abbott to find the effect of CPPU (N-(2- chloro-4-pyridyl)-N-phenylurea) and summer pruning on fruit yield, fruit size and quality. CPPU greatly stimulated fruit growth indicating that it can be a powerful tool for improving kiwifruit cropping. Application of CPPU at 10 ppm concentration was done by dipping the fruits for 10 sec in the aqueous solution of compound at petal fall and 30 days after petal fall. CPPU applied fruits increased size by 20-70 g over control. Summer pruning along with CPPU application proved to be more effective in obtaining fruits of high grades with increased fruit weight (95.37 g fruit(-1)) and high quality. Summer pruning, when done by pinching 1/5th at Petal Fall stage + CPPU dipping (10 ml(-1)) and pinching 1/5th continued till harvest, at one month interval resulted in increased fruit yield (54.80 kg vine(-1)), high TSS (17.60 Brix), high total sugar (9.85%), advanced ripening by one week and reduced flesh firmness.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Immune activation and inflammation play critical roles in the stressful environmental conditions like high altitude, extreme cold, etc. Human leukocyte antigen-G (HLA-G) is a non classical major histocompatiblity complex class I (MHC class- I) protein, upregulated in the context of transplantation, malignancy and inflammation. We hypothesized serum HLA-G as a possible stress biomarker and studied levels of soluble form of HLA-G (sHLA-G) in Indian Antarctic expeditioners. METHODS: sHLA-G ELISA was performed in the serum of summer (n=27) and winter (n=22) Indian Antarctic expeditioners. The summer expeditioners were evaluated at three different time points, i.e. before leaving India, after one month ship borne journey, and after staying one month at Indian research base, Maitri in Antarctica, while winter expeditioners were evaluated at five different time points, i.e. before leaving India, and in the month of March, May, August and November at Antarctica. RESULTS: o0 ne month ship borne journey did not cause any significant change in the sHLA-G level as compared to the baseline level of the summer expeditioners. sHLA-G levels were not changed significantly in the months of March, May, August and November as compared to the baseline level of the winter expeditioners. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicated that the extreme conditions of Antarctica did not cause any significant change in the sHLA-G level in both summer and winter expeditioners.

The use of novel active ingredients for the functional modification of chitosan nanoformulations has attracted global attention. In this study, chitosan has been functionalized via histidine to craft novel chitosan-histidine nanoformulation (C-H NF) using ionic gelation method. C-H NF exhibited elite physico-biochemical properties, influencing physiological and biochemical dynamics in Tomato. These elite properties include homogenous-sized nanoparticles (314.4 nm), lower PDI (0.218), viscosity (1.43 Cps), higher zeta potential (11.2 mV), nanoparticle concentration/ml (3.53 × 108), conductivity (0.046 mS/cm), encapsulation efficiency (53%), loading capacity (24%) and yield (32.17%). FTIR spectroscopy revealed histidine interaction with C-H NF, while SEM and TEM exposed its porous structure. Application of C-H NF to Tomato seedling and potted plants through seed treatment and foliar spray positively impacts growth parameters, antioxidant-defense enzyme activities, reactive oxygen species (ROS) content, and chlorophyll and nitrogen content. We claim that the histidine-functionalized chitosan nanoformulation enhances physico-biochemical properties, highlighting its potential to elevate biochemical and physiological processes of Tomato plant.

Acute exposure to hypobaric hypoxia induces the changes in autonomic control of heart rate. Due to emergencies or war like conditions, rapid deployment of Indian military personnel into high altitude frequently occurs. Rapid deployment to high altitude soldiers are at risk of developing high altitude sickness. The present study was conducted to evaluate the acute exposure to high altitude hypobaric hypoxia (3500 m altitude) on the autonomic nervous control of heart rate in Indian military personnel during first week of acclimatization Indices of heart rate variability (viz; R-R interval, total power, low frequency, high frequency, ratio of low to high frequency) and pulse arterial oxygen saturation were measured at sea level and 3500m altitude. Power spectrum of heart rate variability was quantified by low frequency (LF: 0.04-0.15 Hz) and high frequency (HF: 0.15-0.5 Hz) widths. The ratio of LF to HF was also assessed as an index of the sympathovagal balance. Mean R-R interval decreased significantly on day 2 on induction to altitude which tended to increase on day 5. Total power (TP) decreased high altitude and tended to recover within a week. Both HF and LF power showed decrement at 3500m in comparison to sea level. The ratio of LF to HF (LF/HF) at 3500m was significantly higher at 3500m. SpO2 values decreased significantly (P < 0.05) at high altitude on day-2 which increased on day-5. We conclude that autonomic control of the heart rate measured by heart rate variability was altered on acute induction to 3500m which showed a significant decrease in parasympathetic tone and increase in sympathetic tone, then acclimatization seems to be characterized by progressive shift toward a higher parasympathetic tone.

Photoplethysmography (PPG) based healthcare devices have gained enormous interest in the detection of cardiac abnormalities. Limited research has been implemented for myocardial infarction (MI) detection. Moreover, PPG-based detection of angina is still a research gap. PPG signals are not always informative. Therefore, this research work presents the use of PPG signals and their second derivative to evaluate myocardial infarction and angina using a novel set of morphological features. The obtained morphological features are fed onto the feed-forward artificial neural network for the identification of the type of MI and unstable angina (UA). The initial experiments have been carried out on non-ambulatory (public) subjects for feature extraction and later evaluated on ambulatory (self-generated) databases. The intended method attains accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of 98%, 97%, 98% on the public database and 94%, 94%, 94% on the self-generated database. The result shows that the proposed set of features can detect MI and UA with significant accuracy.

Chromium (Cr), with its great economic importance in industrial use, is a major metal pollutant of the environment. It affects soil microbial activity and soil fertility, resulting in losses in yield of plants. Paenibacillus lentimorbus B-30488(r) (B-30488(r)) tolerated 200 µg ml(-1) of Cr under in vitro conditions and produced the plant growth promoting substance indole acetic acid in the presence of Cr. Our in vitro study indicates enhancement in B-30488(r) biofilm formation by sodium alginate (SA) and calcium chloride (CaCl(2)) both in absence and presence of supplemented Cr(VI) as compared to unsupplemented control. The plant growth promoting effects caused by the B-30488(r) biofilm in rhizosphere of chickpea under Cr(VI) stress suggests a phytoprotective role of B-30488(r) biofilm. Our study reflects the multifarious role of strain B-30488(r) and presents it as a potent plant growth promoting and bioremediation agent useful in Cr-contaminated rhizosphere soil, whereby the SA and CaCl(2) induced B-30488(r) biofilm on plant root acts as a shield in preventing the direct access of toxic Cr to plant tissues, thus reducing its uptake in plants.

BACKGROUND: In a rural Irish hospital, a simple clinical score (SCS) determined at the time of admission enabled stratification of acute general medical admissions into five categories that were associated incrementally with patients' immediate and 30-day mortality. The aim of this study was to examine the representative performance of this SCS in predicting the outcomes of general medical admissions to an Australian teaching hospital. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was undertaken of a representative sample from 480 admissions in 2007 to an urban university teaching hospital in Australia. The SCS was calculated and related to that patient's outcome in terms of mortality, length of stay, nursing home placement on discharge, the occurrence of medical emergency team call and intensive care unit transfer. These data were compared, where possible, with the outcomes reported in the Irish hospital. RESULTS: Four hundred and seventeen complete sets of data allowed calculation of the SCS. There were significant linear correlations of the SCS (divided into quintiles) and patients' in-hospital and 30-day mortality, their length of stay and their discharge to a nursing home. There was no association of the SCS and the patients' readmission rate, intensive care unit transfer rate or likelihood of a medical emergency team call. The significant trends replicated those from the Irish hospital. CONCLUSION: The SCS can predict significant outcomes for general medical admissions in an Australian hospital despite obvious differences to the hospital of its derivation. A wider study of Australasian hospitals and the performance of the SCS as a predictor of general medical admission outcomes is underway.

Plasmodium vivax is the predominant species of the human malaria parasite present in the Indian subcontinent. There have been recent reports on Chloroquine (CQ) resistance and severe manifestations shown by P. vivax from different regions of the world including India. This study focuses on Bikaner, India where during the last few years there have been continuous reports of severe manifestations by both Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax. This region has a widespread use of Chloroquine and Sulfadoxine-Pyrimethamine for the treatment of malaria, but the resistance profiles of these drugs are not available. We report here the profile of mutations in marker genes associated with Chloroquine and antifolate drug resistance among the P. vivax parasites obtained from patients with severe (n=30) and non-severe (n=48) manifestations from this region. Most isolates showed the wild type alleles for both the Chloroquine and antifolate resistance markers (P<0.0005). Except for one isolate showing Y976F mutation in the Pvmdr-1 gene, no reported mutation was observed in the Pvmdr-1 or Pvcrt gene. This is in accordance with the fact that till date no Chloroquine resistance has been reported from this region. However, the single isolate with a mutation in Pvmdr-1 may suggest the beginning of the trend towards decreased susceptibility to Chloroquine. The frequency of PvDHFR-PvDHPS two locus mutations was higher among the patients showing severe manifestations than the patient group with non-severe (uncomplicated) malaria (P<0.003). None of the parasites from patients with uncomplicated P. vivax malaria showed the mutant PvDHPS genotype. Novel mutations in PvDHFR (S117H) and PvDHPS (F365L, D459A and M601I) were observed only in the parasite population obtained from patients exhibiting severe complications. Preliminary homology modeling and molecular docking studies predicted that these mutations apparently do not have any effect on the binding of the drug molecule to the enzyme. However, the presence of novel mutations in the PvDHPS gene indicate a degree of polymorphism of this molecule which is in contrast to available published information.

Relative humidity plays an important role in climate change and global warming, making it a research area of greater concern in recent decades. The present study attempted to implement seasonal autoregressive moving average (SARIMA) and artificial neural network (ANN) with multilayer perceptron (MLP) models to forecast the monthly relative humidity in Delhi, India during 2017-2025. The average monthly relative humidity data for the period 2000-2016 have been used to carry out the objectives of the proposed study. The forecast trend in relative humidity declines from 2017 to 2025. The accuracy of the models has been measured using root mean squared error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE). The results showed that the SARIMA model provides the forecasted relative humidity with RMSE of 6.04 and MAE of 4.56. On the other hand, MLP model reported the forecasted relative humidity with RMSE of 4.65 and MAE of 3.42. This study concluded that the ANN model was more reliable for predicting relative humidity than SARIMA model.
