RESUMO

Proper topographically organized neural connections between the thalamus and the cerebral cortex are mandatory for thalamus function. Thalamocortical (TC) fiber growth begins during the embryonic period and completes by the third trimester of gestation, so that human neonates at birth have a thalamus with a near-facsimile of adult functional parcellation. Whether congenital neocortical anomaly (e.g., lissencephaly) affects TC connection in humans is unknown. Here, via diffusion MRI fiber-tractography analysis of long-term formalin-fixed postmortem fetal brain diagnosed as lissencephaly in comparison with an age-matched normal one, we found similar topological patterns of thalamic subregions and of internal capsule parcellated by TC fibers. However, lissencephaly fetal brain showed white matter structural changes, including fewer/less organized TC fibers and optic radiations, and much less cortical plate invasion by TC fibers - particularly around the shallow central sulcus. Diffusion MRI fiber tractography of normal fetal brains at 15, 23, and 26 gestational weeks (GW) revealed dynamic volumetric change of each parcellated thalamic subregion, suggesting coupled developmental progress of the thalamus with the corresponding cortex. Moreover, from GW23 and GW26 normal fetal brains, TC endings in the cortical plate could be delineated to reflect cumulative progressive TC invasion of cortical plate. By contrast, lissencephaly brain showed a dramatic decrease in TC invasion of the cortical plate. Our study thus shows the feasibility of diffusion MRI fiber tractography in postmortem long-term formalin-fixed fetal brains to disclose the developmental progress of TC tracts coordinating with thalamic and neocortical growth both in normal and lissencephaly fetal brains at mid-gestational stage.

Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1)-induced encephalitis is the most common cause of sporadic, fatal encephalitis in humans. HSV-1 has at least 10 different envelope glycoproteins, which can promote virus infection. The ligands for most of the envelope glycoproteins and the significance of these ligands in virus-induced encephalitis remain elusive. Here, we show that glycoprotein E (gE) binds to the cellular protein, annexin A1 (Anx-A1) to enhance infection. Anx-A1 can be detected on the surface of cells permissive for HSV-1 before infection and on virions. Suppression of Anx-A1 or its receptor, formyl peptide receptor 2 (FPR2), on the cell surface and gE or Anx-A1 on HSV-1 envelopes reduced virus binding to cells. Importantly, Anx-A1 knockout, Anx-A1 knockdown, or treatments with the FPR2 antagonist reduced the mortality and tissue viral loads of infected mice. Our results show that Anx-A1 is a novel enhancing factor of HSV-1 infection. Anx-A1-deficient mice displayed no evident physiology and behavior changes. Hence, targeting Anx-A1 and FPR2 could be a promising prophylaxis or adjuvant therapy to decrease HSV-1 lethality.

Understanding how widespread species adapt to variation in abiotic conditions across their ranges is fundamental to ecology. Insight may come from studying how among-population variation (APV) in the common garden corresponds with the environmental conditions of source populations. However, there are no such studies comparing native vs non-native populations across multiple life stages. We examined APV in the performance and functional traits of 59 Conyza canadensis populations, in response to drought, across large aridity gradients in the native (North America) and non-native (Eurasia) ranges in three experiments. Our treatment (dry vs wet) was applied at the recruitment, juvenile, and adult life stages. We found contrasting patterns of APV in drought responses between the two ranges. In the native range, plant performance was less reduced by drought in populations from xeric than mesic habitats, but such relationship was not apparent for non-native populations. These range-specific patterns were consistent across the life stages. The weak adaptive responses of non-native populations indicate that they can become highly abundant even without complete local adaptation to abiotic environments and suggest that long-established invaders may still be evolving to the abiotic environment. These findings may explain lag times in invasions and raise concern about future expansions.

A novel defect control approach based on laminated HfO2/ZrO2with multifunctional TiN/Mo/TiOxNyelectrode is proposed to significantly improve the endurance and data retention in HZO-based ferroelectric capacitor. The O-rich interface reduces leakage current and prolong the endurance up to 1011cycles while retaining a 2Pr value of 34 (µC cm-2) at 3.4 MV cm-1. Using first-principles calculations and experiments, we demonstrate that the enhancement of endurance is ascribed to the higher migration barrier of oxygen vacancies within the laminated HZO film and higher work function of MoOx/TiOxNybetween top electrode and the insulating oxide. This 2.5 nm thick TiOxNybarrier further increase the grain size of HZO, lowering the activation field and thus improving polarization reversal speed. This interfacial layer further decreases the overall capacitance, increases the depolarization field, thereby enhancing the data retention. By fitting the data using the Arrhenius equation, we demonstrate a 10 years data retention is achieved at 109.6 °C, surpassing traditional SS-HZO of 78.2 °C with a 450 °C rapid thermal annealing (required by backend-of-the-line). This work elucidates that interfacial engineering serves as a crucial technology capable of resolving the endurance, storage capability, and high-temperature data retention issues for ferroelectric memory.

INTRODUCTION: Despite prior research on the association between sarcopenia and cognitive impairment in the elderly, a comprehensive model that integrates various brain pathologies is still lacking. METHODS: We used data from 528 non-demented older adults with or without sarcopenia in the Catholic Aging Brain Imaging (CABI) database, containing magnetic resonance imaging scans, positron emission tomography scans, and clinical data. We also measured three key components of sarcopenia: skeletal muscle index (SMI), hand grip strength (HGS), and the five times sit-to-stand test (5STS). RESULTS: All components of sarcopenia were significantly correlated with global cognitive function, but cortical thickness and amyloid-beta (Aß) retention had distinctive relationships with each measure. In the path model, brain atrophy resulting in cognitive impairment was mediated by Aß retention for SMI and periventricular white matter hyperintensity for HGS, but directly affected by the 5STS. DISCUSSION: Treatments targeting each sub-domain of sarcopenia should be considered to prevent cognitive decline. HIGHLIGHTS: We identified distinct impacts of three sarcopenia measures on brain structure and Aß. Muscle mass is mainly associated with Aß and has an influence on the brain atrophy. Muscle strength linked with periventricular WMH and brain atrophy. Muscle function associated with cortical thinning in specific brain regions. Interventions on sarcopenia may be important to ease cognitive decline in the elderly.

BACKGROUND: Vision loss in patients with wet/exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is associated with choroidal neovascularization (CNV), and AMD is the leading cause of irreversible vision impairment in older adults. Interleukin-17A (IL-17A) is a component of the microenvironment associated with some autoimmune diseases. Previous studies have indicated that wet AMD patients have elevated serum IL-17A levels. However, the effect of IL-17A on AMD progression needs to be better understood. We aimed to investigate the role of IL-17A in a laser-induced CNV mouse model. METHODS: We established a laser-induced CNV mouse model in wild-type (WT) and IL-17A-deficient mice and then evaluated the disease severity of these mice by using fluorescence angiography. We performed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) to analyze the levels of IL-17A and to investigate the immune cell populations in the eyes of WT and IL-17A-deficient mice. We used ARPE-19 cells to clarify the effect of IL-17A under oxidative stress. RESULTS: In the laser-induced CNV model, the CNV lesions were larger in IL-17A-deficient mice than in WT mice. The numbers of γδ T cells, CD3+CD4+RORγt+ T cells, Treg cells, and neutrophils were decreased and the number of macrophages was increased in the eyes of IL-17A-deficient mice compared with WT mice. In WT mice, IL-17A-producing γδ T-cell numbers increased in a time-dependent manner from day 7 to 28 after laser injury. IL-6 levels increased and IL-10, IL-24, IL-17F, and GM-CSF levels decreased in the eyes of IL-17A-deficient mice after laser injury. In vitro, IL-17A inhibited apoptosis and induced the expression of the antioxidant protein HO-1 in ARPE-19 cells under oxidative stress conditions. IL-17A facilitated the repair of oxidative stress-induced barrier dysfunction in ARPE-19 cells. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings provide new insight into the protective effect of IL-17A in a laser-induced CNV model and reveal a novel regulatory role of IL-17A-producing γδ T cells in the ocular microenvironment in wet AMD.

BACKGROUND: Spermatozoa have the task of delivering an intact paternal genome to the oocyte and supporting successful embryo development. The detection of sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF) has been emerging as a complementary test to conventional semen analysis for male infertility evaluation, but the mechanism leading to SDF and its impact on assisted reproduction remain unclear. Therefore, the study identified and analyzed the differentially expressed proteins of sperm with high and low SDF. METHODS: Semen samples from men attended the infertility clinic during June 2020 and August 2020 were analyzed, and sperm DNA fragmentation index (DFI) was detected by the sperm chromatin structure assay. Semen samples with low DFI (< 30%, control group) and high DFI (≥ 30%, experimental group) were optimized by density gradient centrifugation (DGC), and the differentially expressed proteins of obtained sperm were identified by the Sequential Window Acquisition of All Theoretical Mass Spectra Mass Spectrometry (SWATH-MS) and performed GO and KEGG analysis. RESULTS: A total of 2186 proteins were identified and 1591 proteins were quantified, of which 252 proteins were identified as differentially expressed proteins, including 124 upregulated and 128 downregulated. These differentially expressed proteins were involved in metabolic pathways, replication/recombination/repair, acrosomal vesicles, kinase regulators, fertilization, tyrosine metabolism, etc. Western blotting results showed that the expression levels of RAD23B and DFFA proteins and the levels of posttranslational ubiquitination and acetylation modifications in the experimental group were significantly higher than those in the control group, which was consistent with the results of proteomics analysis. CONCLUSIONS: Proteomic markers of sperm with high DNA fragmentation can be identified by the SWATH-MS and bioinformatic analysis, and new protein markers and posttranslational modifications related to sperm DNA damage are expected to be intensively explored. Our findings may improve our understanding of the basic molecular mechanism of sperm DNA damage.

A series of trimetallic cyanidometal-bridged compounds [Men Cp(dppe)FeII -(µ-NC)-RuII (MeOpy)4 -(µ-CN)-FeII (dppe)CpMen ] - [PF6 ]2 (N[PF6 ]2 , n=0, N =1; n=1, N=2; n=3, N=3; Cp=cyclopentadiene, dppe=1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane, MeOpy=4-methoxypyridine) and their one- and two-electron oxidized compounds N3+ and N4+ were synthesized and characterized. Meanwhile, a series of corresponding linear cyanido-bridged pentanuclear compounds [Men Cp(dppe)FeIII -(µ-NC)-RuII (MeOpy)4 -(µ-NC)-AgI -(µ-CN)-RuII (MeOpy)4 -(µ-CN)-FeIII (dppe)CpMen ][BF4 ]5 (M[BF4 ]5 , n=0, M=4; n=1, M=5; n=3, M=6) were also obtained and well characterized. The investigations suggest that in the trinuclear system there exists remote interaction between the two Fe centers, but no significant interactions exist across the central silver unit between the metals on the two sides of the silver center in the pentanuclear system. In both the trinuclear N4+ and the pentanuclear M5+ complexes, there exists the neighboring RuII →FeIII MM'CT transitions, and the MM'CT energy in the corresponding trinuclear system is higher than those in the pentanuclear system in which no remote metal-metal interaction occurs. Meanwhile, as the substituted methyl groups on the cyclopentadiene increases, the redox potential of the ruthenium in the trinuclear N4+ series increases, but that in the pentanuclear M5+ complexes decreases.

RESEARCH QUESTION: What are the molecular mechanisms leading to human sperm DNA damage? DESIGN: Semen samples were collected and the sperm DNA fragmentation index (DFI) was assessed. Differentially expressed RNA in spermatozoa with a high (DFI ≥30%, experimental group) or normal (DFI <30%, control group) DFI were identified by RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) technology, and Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis was performed. Three differentially expressed RNA related to sperm DNA damage and repair, namely PMS1, TP53BP1 and TLK2, were validated using real-time quantitative (RT-qPCR). RESULTS: A total of 19,970 expressed RNA were detected in the two groups. Compared with the control group, the expression levels of 189 RNA in the experimental group were significantly increased and those of 163 genes decreased. Gene Ontology enrichment analysis showed that these RNA were mainly concentrated in the ATPase-dependent transmembrane transport complex, extracellular exosome, somatic cell DNA recombination, protein binding, cytoplasm and regulation of localization. KEGG pathway analysis showed that these RNA were mainly related to the PI3K-Akt signalling pathway, endocytosis, p53 signalling pathway and cGMP-PKG signalling pathway. The RT-qPCR results showed that the expression levels of PMS1, TP53BP1 and TLK2 in the experimental group were significantly lower than in the control group (P = 0.01, 0.015 and 0.004, respectively), which was identical to the results of RNA sequencing. CONCLUSIONS: Differentially expressed RNA related to sperm DNA damage and repair may be identified by RNA-seq technology, which provides new insights into the understanding of sperm DNA damage and repair, and will help to discover new biomarkers related to sperm DNA damage.

PURPOSE: Haptic repositioning during flanged intraocular lens (IOL) fixation can be difficult, and the haptic requiring repositioning may be at increased risk of excessive bending or breakage. This study aimed to report double-needle haptic repositioning technique outcomes for the aforementioned difficulty during flanged IOL fixation. METHODS: This retrospective case series included seven eyes requiring haptic repositioning during flanged IOL fixation. The method features reinsertion of an already externalized haptic into the needle lumen followed by a needle-haptic complex internalized through the original tract into the eyeball. Thus, an adequate configuration for contralateral haptic can be achieved for insertion into the needle lumen to create a double-needle condition before both haptics are successfully externalized. RESULTS: The median follow-up duration was 24 months (range, 4-24 months). Postoperatively, the IOL was well-centered, and corrected distance visual acuity improved from 20/320 (20/4,000-20/70) to 20/50 (20/250-20/20). No intraoperative or postoperative complications were noted. CONCLUSION: The technique produced encouraging results in patients undergoing haptic repositioning during flanged IOL fixation. This technique could potentially reduce haptic overbending risk and facilitate haptic adjustment. Further studies are needed to confirm the feasibility of the technique.

OBJECTIVE: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a useful approach for studying neuronal integrity in animals. However, the test-retest reproducibility of DTI techniques in animals has not been discussed. Therefore, the first part of this work was to systematically elucidate the reliability of DTI-derived parameters in an animal study. Subsequently, we applied the DTI approach to an animal model of diabetes in a longitudinal manner. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In Study 1, nine rats underwent two DTI sessions using the same scanner and protocols, with a gap of 4 weeks. The reliability of the DTI-derived parameters was evaluated in terms of sessions and raters. In Study 2, nine rats received a single intraperitoneal injection of 70 mg/kg streptozotocin (STZ) to develop diabetes. Longitudinal DTI scans were used to assess brain alterations before and 4 weeks after STZ administration. RESULTS: In the test-retest evaluation, the inter-scan coefficient of variation (CoV) ranged from 3.04 to 3.73% and 2.12-2.59% for fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD), respectively, in different brain regions, suggesting excellent reproducibility. Moreover, rater-dependence had minimal effects on FA and MD quantification, with all inter-rater CoV values less than 4%. Following the onset of diabetes, FA in striatum and cortex were noted to be significantly lower relative to the period where they had not developed diabetes (both P < 0.05). However, when compared to the control group, a significant change in FA caused by diabetes was detected only in the striatum (P < 0.05), but not in the cortex. CONCLUSION: These results demonstrate good inter-rater and inter-scan reliability of DTI in animal studies, and the longitudinal setting has a beneficial effect on detecting small changes in the brain due to diseases.

Mitochondrial dysfunction was reported to be involved in the development of lung diseases including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, molecular regulation underlying metabolic disorders in the airway epithelia exposed to air pollution remains unclear. In the present study, lung bronchial epithelial BEAS-2B and alveolar epithelial A549 cells were treated with diesel exhaust particles (DEPs), the primary representative of ambient particle matter. This treatment elicited cell death accompanied by induction of lipid reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and ferroptosis. Lipidomics analyses revealed that DEPs increased glycerophospholipid contents. Accordingly, DEPs upregulated expression of the electron transport chain (ETC) complex and induced mitochondrial ROS production. Mechanistically, DEP exposure downregulated the Hippo transducer transcriptional co-activator with PDZ-binding motif (TAZ), which was further identified to be crucial for the ferroptosis-associated antioxidant system, including glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4), the glutamate-cysteine ligase catalytic subunit (GCLC), and glutathione-disulfide reductase (GSR). Moreover, immunohistochemistry confirmed downregulation of GPX4 and upregulation of lipid peroxidation in the bronchial epithelium of COPD patients and Sprague-Dawley rats exposed to air pollution. Finally, proteomics analyses confirmed alterations of ETC-related proteins in bronchoalveolar lavage from COPD patients compared to healthy subjects. Together, our study discovered that involvement of mitochondrial redox dysregulation plays a vital role in pulmonary epithelial cell destruction after exposure to air pollution.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) uveitis, a type of herpetic uveitis, is a major cause of infectious uveitis. Anterior and posterior CMV uveitis have diverse clinical presentations and treatment modalities. Based on expert consensus in Taiwan, this article provides suggestions regarding clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment strategies for CMV uveitis based on clinical practice experience in Taiwan. CMV uveitis may have a distinct clinical presentation. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is an essential diagnostic tool to confirm a diagnosis. Antiviral therapy is the mainstay of treatment. Different agents, routes, and other supplemental treatments have been summarized and discussed in this article. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment of CMV uveitis are crucial to avoid irreversible complications and vision loss. This consensus provides practical guidelines for ophthalmologists in Taiwan.

The ε2 allele of apolipoprotein E (ε2) has neuroprotective effects against beta-amyloid (Aß) pathology in Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, its impact on the functional connectivity and hub efficiency in cognitively normal older adults (CN) with ε2 is unclear. We investigated the functional connectivity differences in the default mode network (DMN), salience network, and central executive network (CEN) between A-PET-negative (N = 29) and A-PET-positive (N = 15) CNs with ε2/ε2 or ε2/ε3 genotypes. The A-PET-positive CNs exhibited a lower anterior DMN functional connectivity, higher posterior DMN functional connectivity, and increased CEN functional connectivity compared to the A-PET-negative CNs. Cerebral Aß retention was negatively correlated with anterior DMN functional connectivity and positively correlated with posterior DMN and anterior CEN functional connectivity. A graph theory analysis showed that the A-PET-positive CNs displayed a higher betweenness centrality in the middle frontal gyrus (left) and medial fronto-parietal regions (left). The betweenness centrality in the middle frontal gyrus (left) was positively correlated with Aß retention. Our findings reveal a reversed anterior-posterior dissociation in the DMN functional connectivity and heightened CEN functional connectivity in A-PET-positive CNs with ε2. Hub efficiencies, measured by betweenness centrality, were increased in the DMN and CEN of the A-PET-positive CNs with ε2. These results suggest unique functional connectivity responses to Aß pathology in CN individuals with ε2.

Recent studies have demonstrated the pivotal role of locus coeruleus (LC) and salience network (SN) resting state functional connectivity (rsFC) changes in the early stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Moreover, sex has been a crucial point of discussion in understanding AD pathology. We aimed to demonstrate the sex-related disparities in the functional connectivity (FC) of the SN and LC in preclinical AD. A total of 89 cognitively normal patients with evidence of amyloid beta (Aß) accumulation ([18F] flutemetamol +) were recruited in the study. A seed-to-voxel analysis was conducted to measure the LC and SN rsFC differences between sexes. In addition, sex by Aß interactive effects on FC values were analyzed with a general linear model. There were statistically significant sex by regional standardized uptake value ratio (SUVR) interactions in the LC FC with the parietal, frontal, and occipital cortices. Moreover, there was a significant sex by global SUVR interaction in the SN FC with the temporal cortex. The findings suggest that there are differential patterns of LC FC and SN FC in males and females with preclinical AD, which interact with regional Aß deposition.

The aim was to investigate the relationship between time to hemostasis and pulpotomy outcomes with the use of iRoot BP Plus (Innovative Bioceramics, Vancouver, Canada) for young permanent teeth of patients aged from 7 to 12 with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis and evaluate the outcomes of pulpotomy. The present study was a prospective cohort study. Two hundred and six young permanent teeth with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis underwent pulpotomy with the use of iRoot BP Plus. All patients underwent pulpotomy in accordance with a standardized protocol. Patients were postoperatively re-called after 3, 6, 12 months. Successful cases were defined according to clinical and radiographic evaluations. Main outcome measures included tooth position, cave shape, previous restoration, preoperative symptoms, time to hemostasis and outcomes. On the basis of univariate linear regression model, the relationships between time to hemostasis was evaluated, and p < 0.05 indicated a difference that achieved statistical significance. One hundred and ninety-three teeth can be evaluated after a follow-up for 6 to 36 months. The mean age of subjects was 9.43 ± 1.51 years. The overall clinical and radiographic success rate of pulpotomy reached 71.5% (138/193). After adjusting potential confounders (age, sex, previous restoration), non-linear relationship was detected between time to hemostasis and pulpotomy outcomes whose point was 4 minutes. The relationship between time to hemostasis and pulpotomy outcomes is non-linear. Pulpotomy outcomes was negatively related with time to hemostasis when time to hemostasis is more than 4 minutes.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical efficacy of dapoxetine combined with transcutaneous neuromuscular electrical stimulation (TNES) in the treatment of primary premature ejaculation. METHODS: A total of 60 patients who met the diagnostic criteria for primary premature ejaculation were selected as study subjects and randomly divided into a dapoxetine group (control group) and a dapoxetine combined with percutaneous neuromuscular electrical stimulation group (observation group).30 patients in each group were treated for 4 weeks. Intravaginal ejaculatory latency time (IELT), the score of Premature Ejaculation Diagnostic Tool (PEDT), sympathetic skin response located in the penis (PSSR), Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire (GAD-7) before and after treatment were recorded in the two groups. Before and after treatment, the difference in observed indexes in the two groups and the comparison of effective rates between the two groups were analyzed. RESULTS: The latency of IELT and PSSR was prolonged and the PEDT score was decreased in both the observation group and the control group, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.01). Compared with the control group, the observation group had statistically significant differences in extending IELT and PSSR latency and reducing PEDT score (P<0.05). The effective rates of the observation group and control group were 90% and 63.33%, respectively, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in the improvement of depression and anxiety levels between the two groups (P> 0.05). CONCLUSION: Dapoxetine combined with TNES has a better clinical effect than dapoxetine alone in the treatment of primary premature ejaculation, and can be used as an effective option for clinical treatment of primary premature ejaculation.

BACKGROUND: Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) can induce fatal encephalitis. Cellular factors regulate the host immunity to affect the severity of HSV-1 encephalitis. Recent reports focus on the significance of thrombomodulin (TM), especially the domain 1, lectin-like domain (TM-LeD), which modulates the immune responses to bacterial infections and toxins and various diseases in murine models. Few studies have investigated the importance of TM-LeD in viral infections, which are also regulated by the host immunity. METHODS: In vivo studies comparing wild-type and TM-LeD knockout mice were performed to determine the role of TM-LeD on HSV-1 lethality. In vitro studies using brain microglia cultured from mice or a human microglia cell line to investigate whether and how TM-LeD affects microglia to reduce HSV-1 replication in brain neurons cultured from mice or in a human neuronal cell line. RESULTS: Absence of TM-LeD decreased the mortality, tissue viral loads, and brain neuron apoptosis of HSV-1-infected mice with increases in the number, proliferation, and phagocytic activity of brain microglia. Moreover, TM-LeD deficiency enhanced the phagocytic activity of brain microglia cultured from mice or of a human microglia cell line. Co-culture of mouse primary brain microglia and neurons or human microglia and neuronal cell lines revealed that TM-LeD deficiency augmented the capacity of microglia to reduce HSV-1 replication in neurons. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, TM-LeD suppresses microglia responses to enhance HSV-1 infection.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship of quantitative ventricular volume with brain maturation and neurodevelopmental outcomes at age 4.5 years in children born very preterm. STUDY DESIGN: T1-weighted imaging, diffusion tensor imaging, and magnetic resonance spectroscopy were performed shortly after birth (n = 212) and at term-equivalent age (TEA) (n = 194). Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) grade and white matter injury (WMI) volume were measured on early T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. Total cerebral volume and ventricular volume were quantified using the Multiple Automatically Generated Templates-Brain pipeline. At age 4.5 years, 178 children (84%) underwent cognitive and motor assessments. Multivariable linear regression was used to examine the relationships between ventricular volume and neurodevelopmental outcomes. Generalized estimating equations were used to account for repeated measures when analyzing neonatal MRI data. All models accounted for sex, postmenstrual age at scan, WMI volume, IVH grade, and total cerebral volume and were corrected for multiple comparisons. RESULTS: On early MRI, 97 infants had IVH (grade 1, n = 22; grade 2, n = 66; grade 3, n = 9), and 68 had WMI (median, 44 mm3; IQR, 21-296 mm3). IQ at 4.5 years was associated with MRI ventricular volume at the early (ß = -0.64; P < .001) and TEA (ß = -0.44, P < .001) time points. Motor outcomes were associated with ventricular volume at TEA (ß = -0.84, P = .01). Greater ventricular volume independently predicted lower fractional anisotropy in corpus callosum (genu: ß = -0.0008, P = .002; splenium: ß = -0.003, P < .001) and optic radiations (ß = -0.001, P = .004); ventricular volume did not predict the N-acetylaspartate/choline ratio. CONCLUSIONS: In children born very preterm, neonatal ventricular size was associated with 4.5-year neurodevelopmental outcomes. Our findings suggest that white matter maturation may be abnormal in the setting of enlarged ventricular size beyond that expected from concurrent brain injuries.

To investigate the effects of cis/trans-configuration of the cyanidometal bridge and the electron donating ability of the auxiliary ligand on the cyanidometal bridge on metal to metal charge transfer (MMCT) in cyanidometal-bridged mixed valence compounds, two groups of trinuclear cyanidometal-bridged compounds cis/trans-[Cp(dppe)Fe(µ-NC)Ru(4,4'-dmbpy)2 (µ-CN)Fe(dppe)Cp][PF6 ]n (n=2 (cis/trans-1[PF6 ]2 ), 3 (cis/trans-1[PF6 ]3 ), 4 (cis/trans-1[PF6 ]4 )) and cis/trans-[Cp(dppe)Fe(µ-NC)Ru(bpy)2 (µ-CN)Fe(dppe)Cp][PF6 ]3 (cis/trans-2[PF6 ]3 ) were synthesized and fully characterized. The experimental results indicate that for these one- and two-electron oxidation mixed valence compounds, the trans-configuration compounds are more beneficial for MMCT than the cis-configuration compounds, and increasing the electron donating ability of the auxiliary ligand on the cyanidometal bridge is also conductive to MMCT. Moreover, compounds cis/trans-1[PF6 ]n (n=3, 4) and cis/trans-2[PF6 ]3 belong to localized compounds by analyzing the experimental characterization results, supported by the TDDFT calculations.
