RESUMO

A bacterial strain, designated Sp-1T, was isolated from the heterotrich ciliate Spirostomum yagiui collected from a reservoir located in Ulsan, Republic of Korea. Cells of Sp-1T were Gram stain-negative, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming, non-motile and contained poly-ß-hydroxybutyrate granules. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that Sp-1T constituted a distinct phylogenetic lineage within different families in the order Rhizobiales with a pairwise sequence similarity of 95 % to the species of the genus Ochrobactrum: Ochrobactrum anthropi ATCC 49188T and Ochrobactrum cytisi ESC1T (family Brucellaceae). The major cellular fatty acids were C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c (44.4 %) and C16 : 0 (32.1 %). The identified sole isoprenoid quinone was ubiquinone-10 (Q-10). The major polar lipids produced were phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, an unidentified aminolipid, two unidentified phospholipids and three unidentified lipids. The genome size was about 5.4 Mbp and the DNA G+C content was 68.2 mol%. Sp-1T exhibited the highest average nucleotide identity value of 76.6 % and in silico DNA-DNA hybridization value of 22.1 % with Pseudoxanthobacter soli DSM 19599T (family Xanthobacteraeae). This strain is distinguishable from closely related members of the order Rhizobiales by its differential phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, genomic and phylogenetic characteristics. On the basis of evidence from polyphasic taxonomic analysis, we concluded that Sp-1T represents a novel species in a novel genus within the order Rhizobiales, for which the name Segnochrobactrum spirostomi gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Sp-1T (=KCTC 62036T=JCM 32162T). We also describe a novel family, Segnochrobactraceae fam. nov., to encompass the proposed novel genus and species.

The morphology and morphogenesis of Rigidohymena inquieta (Stokes, 1887) Berger, 2011, isolated from a lawn soil in the campus of the University of Ulsan, Korea, was studied, using live observation and protargol impregnation. The molecular phylogeny was studied based on the SSU rRNA gene sequences. The morphology of the Korean population of R. inquieta matches the previously known populations; however, the morphogenetic pattern shows differences to the species R. candens in the involvement of cirrus V/3 in the anlagen formation. A novel genus namely Metahymena gen. nov. has been erected for the present species based on the ontogenetic difference, and the new combination Metahymena inquieta gen. nov., comb. nov. is proposed. The morphology, morphogenesis, distribution, and phylogeny of M. inquieta are presented. The morphologic and morphogenetic data corroborate the phylogenetic analyses as M. inquieta clusters among the stylonychid ciliates in a clade distant from Rigidohymena candens.

A Gram-stain-negative, oxidase-negative and catalase-negative, motile, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated PCS8T, hosted by the ciliate Paramecium caudatum was investigated by using a polyphasic approach. Strain PCS8T was observed to be able to grow at 12-44 °C (optimum, 36-37 °C), at pH 6.0-10.0 (optimum, 7.0) and in the presence of 0-3 % NaCl (optimum, 1-2 %). It could hydrolyse starch and aesculin and produce acid from d-sorbitol, myo-inositol, glycerol and l-rhamnose. The sequence similarity of the new isolate was 96.9 % with respect to Pseudaeromonas pectinilytica and 96.3 % with respect to Pseudaeromonas sharmana. Phylogenetically, strain PCS8T falls within the cluster comprising the Pseudaeromonas species. The predominant cellular fatty acids of strain PCS8T were C16 : 0 (35.8 %), summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c; 35.1 %) and summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c; 10.8 %). This novel strain also contained various fatty acids that are not detected in other members of the genus Pseudaeromonas, such as C16 : 0 3-OH, C18 : 1ω9c and summed feature 5 (C18 : 2ω6,9c and/or C18 : 0 ante). Strain PCS8T contained ubiquinone-8 as the sole respiratory quinone and phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol as major polar lipids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA of the type strain was 66.5 mol%. Based on the distinct phenotypic, phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic and G+C content results, strain PCS8T represents a currently undescribed species within the genus Pseudaeromonas in the family Aeromonadaceae, for which we suggest the name Pseudaeromonas paramecii sp. nov. with the type strain PCS8T (=KCTC 62038T=JCM 32226T). An emended description of the genus Pseudaeromonas is also provided.

The oxytrichid ciliate Rubrioxytricha guamensis nov. spec. isolated from water samples collected from a small freshwater pond near the Hagåtña River in Hagåtña, Guam (United States territory), Micronesia, was investigated, using live observation and protargol impregnation. The morphology, ontogenesis, and molecular phylogeny inferred from the small-subunit rRNA gene sequences were studied. The new species is mainly characterized by a cell size of about 100 × 35 µm in vivo, two elongate ellipsoidal macronuclear nodules and two micronuclei, a single contractile vacuole, a colorless cytoplasm, yellowish cortical granules, arranged in short rows and in small groups, an adoral zone occupying about 34% of body length and comprising 27 membranelles on average, about 27 cirri each in the right and left marginal rows, 18 frontoventral transverse cirri, four dorsal kineties including one dorsomarginal row, and one or two caudal cirri at the posterior end of dorsal kinety 3. The ontogenesis of the new species is similar to that of Rubrioxytricha indica Naqvi et al., 2006. Phylogenetic analyses based on SSU rRNA gene sequences consistently place the new species within the family Oxytrichidae Ehrenberg, 1838, where it clustered with other Rubrioxytricha species, viz., R. tsinlingensis, R. ferruginea, and R. haematoplasma.

Morphological and molecular delimitation of Spirostomum species is currently under debate. We addressed species boundaries within the genus Spirostomum, using the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region and the secondary structure of the ITS2 molecule, and 18S and 28S (D1D2) sequences additionally. The Spirostomum ITS region is among the shortest within the ciliates hitherto studied. The Spirostomum ITS2 molecule matches the "ring model", but exhibits only two helices radiating from a common loop. According to comparative analyses, they very likely correspond to helices II and III of other eukaryotes. Our phylogenetic analyses of the ITS region revealed a complex genealogical structure within the genus Spirostomum. However, boundaries among Spirostomum species could not be unambiguously determined either by phylogenetic trees, networks or sequence divergence cutoffs, because ITS2 sequences transcended species boundaries of the following morphospecies: S. ambiguum, S. minus, S. subtilis and S. teres. According to molecular diversity analysis, this is very likely caused by polymorphism in S. minus and S. teres, and by the lack of variability in S. ambiguum and S. subtilis. No compensatory base changes (CBCs) were detected in helices of the ITS2 molecule between different Spirostomum species, documenting that CBC analysis per se is not able to effectively discriminate Spirostomum species.

Two colepid ciliates, Levicoleps taehwae nov. spec. and L. biwae jejuensis nov. subspec., were collected from the brackish water of the Taehwa River and a small freshwater pond in Jeju Island, South Korea, respectively. Their living morphology, infraciliature, and small subunit (SSU) rRNA gene sequences were determined using standard methods. Barrel-shaped L. taehwae nov. spec. is a small ciliate with an average size of 45 × 25 µm in vivo, about 15 ciliary rows each composed of 12 monokinetids and two perioral dikinetids, and two 20 µm-long caudal cilia. The sequence length and GC content of the SSU rRNA gene are 1,669 bp, 44.5%. This novel species is similar in body size to Coleps hirtus, and has six armor tiers and hirtus-type tier plates, and the same number of ciliary rows as C. hirtus; however, it can be distinguished from the latter by the absence of armor spines and its sequence similarity of SSU rRNA gene is about 92.8% which indicates that it is a distinct form. Levicoleps biwae jejuensis nov. subspec., is a medium colepid ciliate which has a barrel-shaped body, about 22 somatic kineties and 16 transverse ciliary rows, three mini adoral organelles, and four 15 µm-long caudal cilia. The sequence length and GC content of the SSU rRNA gene are 1,666 bp and 44.4%.

Three peritrichous ciliates, Zoothamnium arcuatum n. sp., Z. grossi n. sp., and Z. parahentscheli Sun et al., 2009, were collected from an estuary of the Taehwagang River, Korea. All these species were investigated based on live observations and silver staining, and their small subunit (SSU) rRNA gene was also sequenced. Zoothamnium arcuatum can be identified by a goblet-shaped colony, double-layered peristomial lip, and abstomally shortened row 3 of infundibular polykinety 3 (P3). Zoothamnium grossi is morphologically characterized by an alternately branched stalk with the lowest secondary stalk diverging from the main part of colony, asymmetrically bell-shaped zooids, and three short, parallel ciliary rows in P3. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the three Zoothamnium species described in this paper clustered with other members of the family Zoothamniidae, as expected.

This study analyses the morphological characters of Strombidium paracalkinsi, a species bearing thigmotactic membranelles, collected from Jangmok Bay at the southern coast of Korea. The small subunit ribosomal RNA gene of S. paracalkinsi was sequenced for the first time. By a combination of characters, the thigmotactic membranelles of S. paracalkinsi differ from the thigmotactic membranelles of other strombidiids. They are (1) positioned on dorsal side, (2) contiguous with three membranelles of the adoral zone, but separated by nonciliated portions of the polykinetids, and (3) composed of two rows of kinetids. Except for the thigmotactic membranelles, the morphology of S. paracalkinsi conforms to the diagnosis of the genus Strombidium. Our phylogenetic tree confirms the nonmonophyly of the genus Strombidium. The thigmotactic membranelles are a promising feature for a future split of the genus Strombidium, but require further studies, especially on Strombidium calkinsi Fauré-Fremiet 1932.

The ciliate class Heterotrichea is defined by somatic dikinetids bearing postciliodesmata, by an oral apparatus consisting of a paroral membrane and an adoral zone of membranelles, as well as by features of nuclear division involving extramacronuclear microtubules. Although phylogenetic interrelationships among heterotrichs have been analyzed several times, deeper nodes of the heterotrichean tree of life remain poorly resolved. To cast more light on the evolutionary history of heterotricheans, we performed phylogenetic analyses of multiple loci (18S rRNA gene, ITS1-5.8S rRNA-ITS2 region, and 28S rRNA gene) using traditional tree-building phylogenetic methods and statistical tree topology tests as well as phylogenetic networks, split spectrum analysis and quartet likelihood mapping. This multifaceted approach has shown that (1) Peritromus is very likely an adelphotaxon of all other heterotrichs; (2) Spirostomum and Anigsteinia are sister taxa and their common monophyletic origin is strongly supported by a uniquely posteriorly-thickened paroral membrane; (3) the monotypic family Chattonidiidae should be suppressed because its type genus clusters within the family Condylostomatidae; and (4) new families are needed for Gruberia and Fabrea because their affiliation with Spirostomidae and Climacostomidae, respectively, is not supported by molecular phylogenies nor the fine structure of the paroral membrane.

A new hypotrichous ciliate, Apoterritricha lutea n. g., n. sp., was discovered in a sample of a terrestrial liverwort from Korea. Its morphology was studied using detailed in vivo observation and protargol impregnation. Its phylogenetic relationships were revealed by analyses of the 18S rRNA gene. This new taxon is characterized by a combination of the following traits: (i) ellipsoidal to narrowly ellipsoidal body with an average size of 230 × 85 µm; (ii) two macronuclear nodules and two to five micronuclei; (iii) golden yellow cortical granules, forming small groups along the microtubular appendages of cirri, adoral membranelles, and dorsal kineties; (iv) typically three frontal cirri, one buccal cirrus, four frontoventral cirri, seven midventral cirri, two pretransverse cirri, seven transverse cirri, ca. 38 left, and ca. 36 right marginal cirri; and (v) on average six dorsal kineties, three dorsomarginal kineties, and three caudal cirri. In molecular phylogenies, A. lutea clusters with strong support within a clade containing Afrokeronopsis aurea and several "typical" oxytrichids having golden yellow to brown cortical granules. In this light we propose a hypothesis that is not unambiguously rejected by the present phylogenetic analyses, which shows how the Afrokeronopsis-like pattern could have evolved from a Rubrioxytricha-like ancestor via an Apoterritricha-like stage by cirri-multiplication.

We discovered a new haptorian ciliate, Chaenea mirabilis sp. n., in brackish water collected near the town of Busan, Korea. Its morphology was studied using standard taxonomical methods and its phylogenetic relationships were assessed by phylogenetic analysis of the 18S rRNA gene. Chaenea mirabilis is distinguished from all congeners by the combination of the following traits: (i) a narrowly bursiform to flask-shaped, 60-100 µm long body; (ii) 11-21 doughnut-shaped or sometimes horseshoe-shaped macronuclear nodules; (iii) two types of extrusomes: type I is rod-shaped and 6-8 µm long, while type II is narrowly to broadly teardrop-shaped and only 1.5-2 µm long; (iv) highly refractive special granules tightly arranged between the first and second brush row, forming a conspicuous bulge; and (v) 12-13 somatic kineties. In the 18S rRNA gene phylogeny, C. mirabilis clustered with full support with other congeners. However, there was no statistical support for classification of Chaenea into the families Fuscheriidae, Acropisthiidae, or Trachelophyllidae, but a sister relationship with the Lacrymariidae could not be excluded. Therefore, we establish a new family, Chaeneidae, within the order Lacrymariida. This affiliation is strongly corroborated by the distinctly subapical dorsal brush bearing cilium-like bristles.

Ciliates are single-celled microbial eukaryotes that diverged from other eukaryotic lineages over a billion years ago. The extensive evolutionary timespan of ciliate has led to enormous genetic and phenotypic changes, contributing significantly to their high level of diversity. Recent analyses based on molecular data have revealed numerous cases of cryptic species complexes in different ciliate lineages, demonstrating the need for a robust approach to delimit species boundaries and elucidate phylogenetic relationships. Heterotrich ciliate species of the genus Spirostomum are abundant in freshwater and brackish environments and are commonly used as biological indicators for assessing water quality. However, some Spirostomum species are difficult to identify due to a lack of distinguishable morphological characteristics, and the existence of cryptic species in this genus remains largely unexplored. Previous phylogenetic studies have focused on only a few loci, namely the ribosomal RNA genes, alpha-tubulin, and mitochondrial CO1. In this study, we obtained single-cell transcriptome of 25 Spirostomum species populations (representing six morphospecies) sampled from South Korea and the USA, and used concatenation- and coalescent-based methods for species tree inference and delimitation. Phylogenomic analysis of 37 Spirostomum populations and 265 protein-coding genes provided a robustious insight into the evolutionary relationships among Spirostomum species and confirmed that species with moniliform and compact macronucleus each form a distinct monophyletic lineage. Furthermore, the multispecies coalescent (MSC) model suggests that there are at least nine cryptic species in the Spirostomum genus, three in S. minus, two in S. ambiguum, S. subtilis, and S. teres each. Overall, our fine sampling of closely related Spirostomum populations and wide scRNA-seq allowed us to demonstrate the hidden crypticity of species within the genus Spirostomum, and to resolve and provide much stronger support than hitherto to the phylogeny of this important ciliate genus.

Vorticella includes more than 100 currently recognized species and represents one of the most taxonomically challenging genera of ciliates. Molecular phylogenetic analysis of Vorticella has been performed so far with only sequences coding for small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA); only a few of its species have been investigated using other genetic markers owing to a lack of similar sequences for comparison. Consequently, phylogenetic relationships within the genus remain unclear, and molecular discrimination between morphospecies is often difficult because most regions of the SSU rRNA gene are too highly conserved to be helpful. In this paper, we move molecular systematics for this group of ciliates to the infrageneric level by sequencing additional molecular markers-fast-evolving internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions-in a broad sample of 66 individual samples of 28 morphospecies of Vorticella collected from Asia, North America and Europe. Our phylogenies all featured two strongly supported, highly divergent, paraphyletic clades (I, II) comprising the morphologically defined genus Vorticella. Three major lineages made up clade I, with a relatively well-resolved branching order in each one. The marked divergence of clade II from clade I confirms that the former should be recognized as a separate taxonomic unit as indicated by SSU rRNA phylogenies. We made the first attempt to elucidate relationships between species in clade II using both morphological and multi-gene approaches, and our data supported a close relationship between some morphospecies of Vorticella and Opisthonecta, indicating that relationships between species in the clade are far more complex than would be expected from their morphology. Different patterns of helix III of ITS2 secondary structure were clearly specific to clades and subclades of Vorticella and, therefore, may prove useful for resolving phylogenetic relationships in other groups of ciliates.

Tintinnida is a diverse taxon that accommodates over 1,500 morphospecies, which is an important component of marine planktonic food webs. However, evolutionary relationships of tintinnids are poorly known because molecular data of most groups within this order are lacking. In our study, the small subunit (SSU) rRNA genes representing 10 genera, 5 families of Tintinnida were sequenced, including the first SSU rRNA gene sequences for Coxliella, Dadayiella, Epiplocyloides, and Protorhabdonella, and phylogenetic trees were constructed to assess their intergeneric relationships. Phylogenies inferred from different methods showed that (1) Three newly sequenced Eutintinnus species fell into Eutintinnus clade forming a sister group to the clade containing Amphorides, Steenstrupiella, Amphorellopsis, and Salpingella; (2) Surprisingly, the genetic distances between Amphorides amphora and Amphorellopsis acuta population 1 was even smaller than that between the two populations of Amphorellopsis acuta, casting doubt on the validity of Amphorides and Amphorellopsis as presently defined; (3) The SSU rRNA sequences of Dadayiella ganymedes and Parundella aculeata were almost identical. Therefore, Parundella ganymedes novel combination is proposed; (4) Coxliella, which is currently assigned within Metacylididae, branched instead with some Tintinnopsis species. Furthermore, the validation of Coxliella, which was considered to be a "questionable" genus, was confirmed based on evidences from morphology, ecology, and molecular data; (5) Protorhabdonella and Rhabdonella showed rather low intergeneric distance and grouped together with strong support suggesting that Rhabdonellidae is a well-defined taxon; and (6) Epiplocyloides branched with species in Cyttarocylididae indicating their close relationship.

Ciliated protozoa (ciliates) are unicellular eukaryotes, several of which are important model organisms for molecular biology research. Analyses of codon usage bias (CUB) of the macronuclear (MAC) genome of ciliates can promote a better understanding of the genetic mode and evolutionary history of these organisms and help optimize codons to improve gene editing efficiency in model ciliates. In this study, the following indices were calculated: the guanine-cytosine (GC) content, the frequency of the nucleotides at the third position of codons (T3, C3, A3, G3), the effective number of codons (ENc), GC content at the 3rd position of synonymous codons (GC3s), and the relative synonymous codon usage (RSCU). Parity rule 2 plot analysis, Neutrality plot analysis, ENc plot analysis, and correlation analysis were employed to explore the main influencing factors of CUB. The results showed that the GC content in the MAC genomes of each of 21 ciliate species, the genomes of which were relatively complete, was lower than 50%, and the base compositions of GC and GC3s were markedly distinct. Synonymous codon analysis revealed that the codons in most of the 21 ciliates ended with A or T and four codons were the general putative optimal codons. Collectively, our results indicated that most of the ciliates investigated preferred using the codons with anof AT-ending and that codon usage bias was affected by gene mutation and natural selection.

We studied the morphology and molecular phylogeny of Myoschiston duplicatum, a peritrich ciliate that has been recorded as an epibiont of crustaceans, but which we also identified on marine algae from Korea. The important morphological characteristics revealed by silver staining of Myoschiston species have not been described because they are rarely collected. Using morphological methods, we redescribed the type species of the genus, Myoschiston duplicatum, and provided an improved diagnosis of Myoschiston. In addition, the coding regions for nuclear small subunit (SSU) rRNA and internal transcribed spacer 1-5.8S-internal transcribed spacer 2 sequences were sequenced. Phylogenetic analyses that included available SSU rDNA sequences of peritrichs from GenBank strongly supported a position of M. duplicatum within the family Zoothamniidae. In addition, phylogenetic analyses were performed with single datasets (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) and combined datasets (SSU rDNA + ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) to explore further the phylogenetic relationship in the family Zoothamniidae between the three morphologically similar genera-Zoothamnium, Myoschiston, and Zoothamnopsis.

Tintinnids are a large group of planktonic ciliates with diverse morphologies. The range of variability in lorica shapes and sizes can be very high even within a single species depending on life stages and environmental conditions, which makes the delimitation of different species based on morphological criteria alone very difficult. Accordingly, comparisons of morphological and molecular variability in tintinnids are necessary to provide a pragmatic approach for establishing species boundaries within this diverse and poorly understood group. We investigated the temporal distribution of species of the hyaline tintinnid Helicostomella (Ciliophora, Tintinnina), which were collected daily from September 2008 to August 2009 in Jangmok Bay of Geoje Island on the south coast of Korea. Two forms - a long form and a short form, were discovered. The long form was found in cold waters in February and March whereas the short form occurred in warm waters from June to October. Thus, these two forms were seasonally isolated. However, all the morphological characteristics for these two forms overlap to some degree. A comparison of the small subunit (SSU) rDNA, ITS1-5.8S-ITS2, and ITS2 sequences from two forms revealed 0.5%, 3.8%, and 5.6% divergences, respectively. Morever, one compensatory base change (CBC) and three hemi-CBCs were identified from ITS2 secondary structures of these two forms. All these data suggest that these two forms represent two distinct species despite their highly similar lorica morphology. The phylogenetic position of the genus Helicostomella was also examined using SSU rDNA sequences.

Ciliates of the heterotrich family Folliculinidae are widespread in various habitats and are distinguished by their transparent loricae of various shapes, conspicuous peristomial lobes, and dimorphic life cycles. They usually attach firmly to the surface of substrates, feed on bacteria and microalgae, and play a significant role in energy flow and material cycling in the microbial food web. However, little is known regarding their biodiversity and systematics. In this work, we establish the terminology of the family Folliculinidae and select six crucial features for genus recognition. Based on previous studies, we revise the classification of Folliculinidae, supply improved diagnoses for each of the 33 folliculinid genera, and provide a key to their identification. Moreover, phylogenetic analyses based on small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA) sequences revealed that the family is monophyletic and comprises two subclades (subclades I II) which can be identified by the flexibility of their peristomial lobes and the sculpturing of their necks. Furthermore, we investigate the evolutionary relationships of folliculinids using the six chosen generic features. The morphology and the small subunit (SSU) rRNA gene sequence of the hypotrich Neobakuella flava n. g., n. sp. from the estuary of the Taehwagang River (Ulsan, South Korea) were investigated. The three frontal cirri, the composition of the midventral complex of cirral pairs and rows, and the simple dorsal kinety pattern of three bipolar kineties assign it to the urostyloid taxon Bakuellidae. The increased number of buccal and parabuccal cirri, the presence of transverse cirri, and more than one left marginal row, as well as the lack of caudal cirri separate Neobakuella n. g. from the other bakuellids. Neobakuella flava n. sp. has many 0.3 µm sized green and/or yellow usually dark-green cortical granules and some sparsely distributed, 2 × 1 µm sized grass green with yellowish shimmer granules. The gene sequence data indicate a close relationship with Diaxonella and a distinct separation from the bakuellid Metaurostylopsis and parabirojimid Parabirojimia. The SSU rRNA gene sequences of four further urostyloids (i.e. Diaxonella pseudorubra, Anteholosticha monilata, Metaurostylopsis struederkypkeae, Pseudourostyla cristata) and two stylonychines (i.e. Sterkiella cavicola, Sterkiella histriomuscorum) from Korea were analyzed. Anteholosticha monilata, type of the genus, is clearly separated from the Holosticha clade, supporting the morphological separation from Holosticha. Sterkiella cavicola, type of Sterkiella, clusters within the stylonychines and is obviously closely related with S. histriomuscorum.

As an important component of microzooplankton, ciliates play a key role in matter cycling and energy flow in marine planktonic ecosystems. Studies of planktonic ciliate have been extensive in the South China Sea (SCS) over the last 20 years. Here, we summarize the recent progress on the diversity and distribution of this group in the SCS. This includes that in: (1) the waters covering the intertidal zone of the northern SCS, most studies have focused on taxonomy, with 71 species collected, identified, and described (with ~ 40% new species); (2) neritic waters distribution patterns have been examined at a regional scale, with ciliates displaying significant spatial variations and seasonal dynamics; (3) in oceanic waters, there has been a focus on ciliate distribution in north, centre, and south regions, where mesoscale physical processes play roles in controlling distributions, and noticeable vertical variations occur. More generally, some studies examine the influences of environment variables on ciliates, and indicate that chlorophyll a concentration is commonly positively correlated with ciliates abundance. In addition, some significant findings are summarized, the limitations of past studies are considered, and recommendations are made for future work on planktonic ciliates in SCS.
