RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Gut bacteria have an important influence on colorectal cancer (CRC). The differences of gut bacteria between genders have been the hot spots. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the relationship between gut bacteria and gender differences in patients with CRC. METHODS: A total of 212 patients with CRC and 212 healthy volunteers were recruited. The subjects' fecal samples were obtained, and the fecal microorganisms were analyzed by the third-generation sequencing PacBio. The composition of gut bacteria was analyzed. Linear discriminant analysis Effect Size (LEfSe) was used to analyze the differences in gut bacteria. Pearson coefficient was used to calculate the correlation between differential bacteria. CRC risk prediction models were used to rank the importance of effective differential bacteria. RESULTS: Escherichia flexneri and Phocaeicola vulgatus were the most frequent bacteria in both male and female CRC patients. Bacteroides, Verrucomicrobia and Akkermansiaceae were highly enriched in male CRC group, while Bacteroidetes, Phocaeicola and Tissierellales were highly enriched in female CRC group. Peptostreptococcus anaerobius and Phocaeicola vulgatus were important CRC related bacteria in males and females, respectively. Peptostreptococcus anaerobius was the most important characteristic bacterium of males (AUC = 0.951), and the sensitivity and specificity of the discovery set were 78.74 % and 93.98 %, respectively. Blautia stercoris was the most important characteristic bacterium of females (AUC = 0.966), and the sensitivity and specificity of the discovery set were 90.63 % and 90.63 %, respectively. CONCLUSION: Gut bacteria varied in different genders. Therefore, gender should be considered when gut bacteria are applied in the diagnose and prevention of CRC.

RESUMO

Severe ozone (O3) pollution has been a major air quality issue and affects environmental sustainability in China. Conventional mitigation strategies focusing on reducing volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides (NOx) remain complex and challenging. Here, through field flux measurements and laboratory simulations, we observe substantial nitrous acid (HONO) emissions (FHONO) enhanced by nitrogen fertilizer application at an agricultural site. The observed FHONO significantly improves model performance in predicting atmospheric HONO and leads to regional O3 increases by 37%. We also demonstrate the significant potential of nitrification inhibitors in reducing emissions of reactive nitrogen, including HONO and NOx, by as much as 90%, as well as greenhouse gases like nitrous oxide by up to 60%. Our findings introduce a feasible concept for mitigating O3 pollution: reducing soil HONO emissions. Hence, this study has important implications for policy decisions related to the control of O3 pollution and climate change.

RESUMO

Peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) is an important photochemical pollutant in the troposphere, whereas long-term measurements are scarce in rural areas in North China Plain (NCP), resulting in unclear seasonal variations and sources of PAN in rural NCP. In this study, we conducted a 1-year observation of PAN during 2021-2022 at the rural NCP site. The average concentrations of PAN were 1.10, 0.75, 0.65, and 0.88 ppbv in spring, summer, autumn, and winter, respectively, with a 1-year average of 0.81 ± 0.60 ppbv. Calculations indicate that the loss of PAN through thermal decomposition in summer accounts for 43.2% of the total formed PAN, which is an important reason for the low concentration of PAN in summer. We speculate that since the correlation between PAN and O3 in winter is significantly lower than that in other seasons, the observed regional transport of PAN cannot be ignored in winter. Through budget analysis, regional transport accounted for 12.8% and 55.9% of the observed PAN on the spring and winter pollution days, respectively, which showed that regional transport played key roles during the photochemical pollution of the rural NCP in winter. The potential source contribution function revealed that the transported PAN mainly comes from southern Hebei in spring. In winter, the transported PAN was mainly from Langfang, Hengshui, and southern Beijing. Our findings may aid in understanding PAN variations in different seasons in rural areas and highlight the impact of regional transport on the PAN budget.

RESUMO

Developing adsorbents with multiple merits in capacity, selectivity, mass transfer, and stability toward C2H2/CO2 separation is crucial and challenging for producing high-purity C2H2 for advanced polymers and the electronic industry. Here, we demonstrate a vertex strategy to create adsorbents combining these merits through rationally designing the vertex groups of a wavy-shaped framework in layered 2D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to finely regulate the local conformation and stacking interactions, which creates the optimal inter- and intralayer space to realize simultaneous improvement of adsorption thermodynamics and kinetics. Two new hydrolytically stable MOFs, ZUL-330 and ZUL-430, were prepared, and diverse experiments and modeling on both adsorption equilibrium and diffusion were performed. Record separation selectivities coupled with extraordinary dynamic C2H2 capacities were achieved for C2H2/CO2 mixtures with different proportions (50/50 or 10/5, v/v), along with a small diffusion barrier and fast mass transfer. Consequently, polymer-grade (99.9%) and electronic-grade (99.99%) C2H2 were obtained with excellent productivities of up to ∼6 mmol cm-3.

RESUMO

The quantized photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) in the strained graphene-substrate system is predicted under a sub-Tesla external magnetic field, which is two orders of magnitude smaller than required to produce the quantized effect in the conventional graphene-substrate system. It is found that in-plane and transverse spin-dependent splittings in the PSHE, exhibit different quantized behaviors and are closely related to the reflection coefficients. Unlike the quantized PSHE in the conventional graphene-substrate system formed by the splitting of real Landau levels, the quantized PSHE in the strained graphene-substrate system is attributed to the splitting of pseudo-Landau levels caused by the pseudo-magnetic field and the lifting of valley degeneracy of the n ≠ 0 pseudo-Landau levels induced by the sub-Tesla external magnetic field. At the same time, the pseudo-Brewster angles of the system are also quantized with the change of Fermi energy. The sub-Tesla external magnetic field and the PSHE appear as quantized peak values near these angles. The giant quantized PSHE is expected to be used for direct optical measurements of the quantized conductivities and pseudo-Landau levels in the monolayer strained graphene.

RESUMO

RESEARCH QUESTION: Does thyroid autoimmunity (TAI) adversely affect pregnancy outcomes after IVF/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in euthyroid patients with recurrent implantation failure (RIF)? DESIGN: This retrospective cohort study was conducted at the Reproductive Hospital Affiliated with Shandong University from November 2016 to September 2021. A total of 1031 euthyroid patients diagnosed with RIF were enrolled. Based on serum thyroid autoantibody concentrations, the participants were divided into two groups: the TAI-positive group (219 women with RIF) and the TAI-negative group (812 women with RIF). The parameters were compared between the two groups. Additionally, logistic regression was used to adjust related confounders for primary outcomes, and subgroup and stratified analyses were performed according to different thyroid autoantibody types and TSH concentrations. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in ovarian reserve, ovarian response, embryo quality, pregnancy outcome or neonatal outcome between the two groups (P > 0.05). After adjustments for age, body mass index, thyroid-stimulating hormone and free thyroxine, the biochemical pregnancy rate in the TAI-positive group was significantly lower than that in the TAI-negative group (odds ratio 1.394, 95% CI 1.023-1.901, adjusted P = 0.036). Regarding the implantation rate, clinical pregnancy rate, pregnancy loss rate, stillbirth rate and live birth rate, no significant differences were observed even with subgroup and stratified analyses (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: TAI had no impact on pregnancy outcomes in euthyroid RIF patients who underwent IVF/ICSI. In clinical practice, interventions targeting thyroid autoantibodies in these patients should be implemented with caution and additional evidence is needed.

RESUMO

High cholesterol is an important factor inducing colorectal cancer (CRC). The study aims to determine the key genes and regulatory mechanism associated with tumor-infiltrating T cells underlying cholesterol-induced CRC. Gene expression data and clinical data from CRCS in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) were selected for differential expression and survival analysis. A total of 5,815 DEGs and 21 cholesterol-associated KEGG pathways were identified. Subsequently, 128 CRCs and 127 patients without obvious intestinal lesions were recruited to analyze the relationship between GPX3 expression, cholesterol levels, and pathologic condition. The results showed that the expression of cholesterol-related gene GPX3 was negatively associated with cholesterol level, but positively correlated with Ki-67 proliferation index in CRC. The expression of GPX3 was higher in CRC patients who were in poorly differentiated and advanced stage. In addition, a mice model of high-cholesterol diet intervention was constructed to detect the levels of cholesterol and GPX3 in the peripheral blood of mice, and it was found that the expression level of GPX3 in high-cholesterol mice was lower than that in normal diet mice. CD8+ T cells were isolated from the spleen of mice and the T cell surface receptors were detected. It was found that the expression of CD69 in CD8+ T cells of mice interfered with the high-cholesterol diet, while the expression of PD1, TIM-3, and CTLA-4 was increased. CD8+ T cells were co-cultured with MC38 cells to detect the proliferation rate of CRC cells. The results showed that the tumor cell proliferation ratio in the high cholesterol group was higher than that in the control group. Furthermore, GPX3 downstream genes associated with m6A modification and tumor-infiltrating T cells were screened, and a T cell immune-related ceRNA network was constructed. In total, 53 GPX3 downstream genes associated with m6A modification and tumor-infiltrating T cells were identified. A PPI network that contained 45 nodes and 85 interaction pairs was constructed. The ceRNA network, including 39 miRNA-target and 43 lncRNA-miRNA regulatory pairs, was constructed. In conclusion, GPX3 is a potential target for cholesterol regulation of T cell immunity in CRC.

RESUMO

The separation of C8 aromatics (xylenes and ethylbenzene) remains one of the most challenging industrial separations due to their similar structures and properties. Suitable adsorbents that can distinguish the small differences among isomers are urgently demanded. Herein, we demonstrate a strategy to realize the precise discrimination of C8 aromatics by constructing a nonaromatic confined pore environment with mixed polycycloalkane-type ligands. The nonaromatic low-polar pore environment avoids strong convergent interactions between the framework and the common phenyl rings while creating possibilities to amplify the difference between host-guest/guest-guest interactions regarding the different methyl (ethyl) group positions of isomers. The resultant metal-organic framework, ZUL-C3, with either tetragonal or monoclinic lattice, exhibits outstanding separation performance for C8 aromatics, not only realizing the simultaneous separation of four isomers from each other but also setting a benchmark for the dynamic separation performance of OX/PX and OX/MX.

RESUMO

Tropospheric ozone (O3) pollution is increasing in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region despite a significant decline in atmospheric fine aerosol particles (PM2.5) in recent years. However, the intrinsic reason for the elevation of the regional O3 is still unclear. In this study, we analyzed the spatio-temporal variations of tropospheric O3 and relevant pollutants (PM2.5, NO2, and CO) in the BTH region based on monitoring data from the China Ministry of Ecology and Environment during the period of 2014-2019. The results showed that summertime O3 concentrations were constant in Beijing (BJ, 0.06 µg/(m3•year)) but increased significantly in Tianjin (TJ, 9.09 µg/(m3•year)) and Hebei (HB, 6.06 µg/(m3•year)). Distinct O3 trends between Beijing and other cities in BTH could not be attributed to the significant decrease in PM2.5 (from -5.08 to -6.32 µg/(m3•year)) and CO (from -0.053 to -0.090 mg/(m3•year)) because their decreasing rates were approximately the same in all the cities. The relatively stable O3 concentrations during the investigating period in BJ may be attributed to a faster decreasing rate of NO2 (BJ: -2.55 µg/(m3•year); TJ: -1.16 µg/(m3•year); HB: -1.34 µg/(m3•year)), indicating that the continued reduction of NOx will be an effective mitigation strategy for reducing regional O3 pollution. Significant positive correlations were found between daily maximum 8 hr average (MDA8) O3 concentrations and vehicle population and highway freight transportation in HB. Therefore, we speculate that the increase in rural NOx emissions due to the increase in vehicle emissions in the vast rural areas around HB greatly accelerates regional O3 formation, accounting for the significant increasing trends of O3 in HB.

RESUMO

Atmospheric hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), as an important oxidant, plays a key role in atmospheric sulfate formation, affecting the global radiation budget and causing acid rain deposition. The disproportionation reactions of hydroperoxyl radicals (HO2) in both gas and aqueous phases have long been considered as dominant sources for atmospheric H2O2. However, these known sources cannot explain the significant formation of H2O2 in polluted areas under the conditions of high NO levels and low ambient relative humidity (RH). Here, we show that under relatively dry conditions during daytime, atmospheric fine particles directly produce abundant gas-phase H2O2. The formation of H2O2 is verified to be by a reaction between the particle surface -OH group and HO2 radicals formed by photooxidation of chromophoric dissolved organic matters (CDOMs), which is slightly influenced by the presence of high NO levels but remarkably accelerated by water vapor and O2. In contrast to aqueous-phase chemistry, transition metal ions (TMIs) are found to significantly suppress H2O2 formation from the atmospheric fine particles. The H2O2 formed from relatively dry particles can be directly involved in in situ SO2 oxidation, leading to sulfate formation. As CDOMs are ubiquitous in atmospheric fine particles, their daytime photochemistry is expected to play important roles in formation of H2O2 and sulfate worldwide.

RESUMO

The common cutworm, Spodoptera litura (F.), feeds on a wide variety of food and cash crops and is one of the most widespread and destructive agricultural pests worldwide. Migration is the biological basis of its regional population outbreaks but the seasonal movement of this pest between east and south Asia regions remains unknown. In this study, searchlight traps were used to monitor the seasonal migration of S. litura from 2019 to 2023 in Ruili City (Yunnan, China), located along the insect migratory route between China and the south Asia region. The results showed that migratory activity could occur throughout the year, with the main periods found in spring (April-May) and autumn (October-December). The ovarian development and mating status of the trapped females indicated that most individuals were in the middle or late stages of migration and that Ruili City was located in the transit area of the long-distance migration of the pest. In the migration trajectory simulation, populations of S. litura moved from northeast India, Bangladesh, and northern Myanmar to southwestern China along the southern margin of the Himalayas in spring and returned to the south Asia region in autumn. Our findings clarify the seasonal migration patterns of S. litura in China and South Asia and facilitate the development of regional cross-border monitoring and management systems for this pest.

RESUMO

With the rapid development of histological techniques and the widespread application of single-cell sequencing in eukaryotes, researchers desire to explore individual microbial genotypes and functional expression, which deepens our understanding of microorganisms. In this review, the history of the development of microbial detection technologies was revealed and the difficulties in the application of single-cell sequencing in microorganisms were dissected as well. Moreover, the characteristics of the currently emerging microbial single-cell sequencing (Microbe-seq) technology were summarized, and the prospects of the application of Microbe-seq in microorganisms were distilled based on the current development status. Despite its mature development, the Microbe-seq technology was still in the optimization stage. A retrospective study was conducted, aiming to promote the widespread application of single-cell sequencing in microorganisms and facilitate further improvement in the technology.

RESUMO

Fertilized agricultural soil is a significant source of gaseous nitrogen compounds (GNCs), including N2O, NO, HONO, and NH3. The North China Plain (NCP) is the "hot region" for the release of these GNCs due to intensive fertilization practices. However, existing research has primarily focused on N2O emissions from fertilized farmland in the NCP, lacking comprehensive observational studies on other GNCs. Therefore, a continuous cumulative sampling technique (open-top dynamic chamber system) was utilized in this study to simultaneously measure the exchange fluxes of N2O, NO, HONO, and NH3 over summer maize-winter wheat rotation fields in the NCP. Results showed that GNC emissions from the soil displayed distinct diurnal variations, with higher emissions during the day attributed to elevated soil temperature. However, N2O emissions remained consistent between day and night, potentially influenced not only by soil temperature but also by soil humidity. Annual cumulative emissions and emission factors (EFs) for four GNCs were determined, indicating that N2O, NO, and NH3 emissions during the maize season were 1.38-2.37 times higher than those during the wheat season, with 98 % of HONO emissions occurring in the maize season. Additionally, the study first presented the annual HONO EFs of 0.36 ± 0.03 % in fertilized farmland. Furthermore, a comparison revealed that the fluxes of N2O, NO, NH3, and HONO using the conventional single-point sampling method were 26.4 %, 13.9 %, and 8.10 % lower, and 7.86 % higher compared to the continuous cumulative sampling method recommended in this study. In general, this study provided precise measurements of GNC emissions from farmland, offering essential foundational data for modeling parameters and contributing to the formulation of regional air pollution prevention and control policies.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Gut bacteria are related to colorectal cancer (CRC) and its clinicopathologic characteristics. OBJECTIVE: To develop gut bacterial subtypes and explore potential microbial targets for CRC. METHODS: Stool samples from 914 volunteers (376 CRCs, 363 advanced adenomas, and 175 normal controls) were included for 16S rRNA sequencing. Unsupervised learning was used to generate gut microbial subtypes. Gut bacterial community composition and clustering effects were plotted. Differences of gut bacterial abundance were analyzed. Then, the association of CRC-associated bacteria with subtypes and the association of gut bacteria with clinical information were assessed. The CatBoost models based on gut differential bacteria were constructed to identify the diseases including CRC and advanced adenoma (AA). RESULTS: Four gut microbial subtypes (A, B, C, D) were finally obtained via unsupervised learning. The characteristic bacteria of each subtype were Escherichia-Shigella in subtype A, Streptococcus in subtype B, Blautia in subtype C, and Bacteroides in subtype D. Clinical information (e.g., free fatty acids and total cholesterol) and CRC pathological information (e.g., tumor depth) varied among gut microbial subtypes. Bacilli, Lactobacillales, etc., were positively correlated with subtype B. Positive correlation of Blautia, Lachnospiraceae, etc., with subtype C and negative correlation of Coriobacteriia, Coriobacteriales, etc., with subtype D were found. Finally, the predictive ability of CatBoost models for CRC identification was improved based on gut microbial subtypes. CONCLUSION: Gut microbial subtypes provide characteristic gut bacteria and are expected to contribute to the diagnosis of CRC.

RESUMO

Heterostructured Fe2O3/Fe7S8 hollow fibers were rationally designed and synthesized via the electrospinning technique, followed by a calcination process and sulfuration treatment. Benefitting from the synergistic effect of the hollow structure and the built-in electric field induced by the heterostructure, the as-prepared Fe2O3/Fe7S8 composite anode exhibits high specific capacity (947 mA h g-1 after 100 cycles at 0.2 A g-1), excellent rate capability, and long-term cycling stability (730 mA h g-1 after 1000 cycles at 1 A g-1).

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To rationalize the clinical use and safety are some of the key issues in the surveillance of traditional Chinese medicine injections (TCMIs). METHOD: In this 2011 study, 240 medical records of patients who had been discharged following treatment with TCMIs between 1 and 12 month previously were randomly selected from hospital records. Consistency between clinical use and the description of TCMIs was evaluated. Research on drug use and adverse drug reactions/events using logistic regression analysis was carried out. RESULT: There was poor consistency between clinical use and best practice advised in manuals on TCMIs. Over-dosage and overly concentrated administration of TCMIs occurred, with the outcome of modifying properties of the blood. Logistic regression analysis showed that, drug concentration was a valid predictor for both adverse drug reactions/events and benefits associated with TCMIs. CONCLUSION: Surveillance of rational clinical use and safety of TCMIs finds that clinical use should be consistent with technical drug manual specifications, and drug use should draw on multi-layered logistic regression analysis research to help avoid adverse drug reactions/events.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The invasive fall armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) has widely colonized the tropics and subtropics of Asia. However, the impact on the succession of the Asiatic corn borer (ACB) Ostrinia furnacalis (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), a perennial dominant stemborer of maize in these areas, remains elusive. Here we analyzed the predation relationship, mimicked population competition, and surveyed the pest populations in the border area of Yunnan (southwestern China). RESULTS: Laboratory assays revealed that the 2nd to 6th instar larvae of FAW preyed on ACB, and only the 4th and 5th instar larvae of ACB preyed on FAW (1st instar larvae only, 50% predation rate). The 6th instar FAW preyed on the 1st to 5th instar ACB with a theoretical maximum of 14.5-58.8 ACB individuals (per maize leaf) and 4.8-25.6 individuals (per tassel). When maize plants were infested with eggs of either FAW or ACB in field cage trials, maize damage was 77.6% and 50.6%, respectively, compared with 77.9% and 2.8% upon co-infestation. In field surveys conducted in 2019-2021, FAW density was significantly greater than that of ACB, which took a great impact on maize growth. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that FAW can outcompete ACB at both the individual and population levels, which may result in FAW becoming the dominant pest. These results provide a scientific basis for further analysis of the mechanism by which FAW invades new agricultural areas and offers early-warning strategies for pest management. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

Despite considerable decreases in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in Chinese megacities over the past decade, many second- and third-tier cities that distribute abundant industrial enterprises are still facing great challenges for PM2.5 further reduction under the recent policy background of eliminating heavily-polluted weather. In view of core effects of NOx on PM2.5, the deeper reductions of NOx in these cities are expected to break the plateau of PM2.5 decline, however, the link between NOx emission and PM2.5 mass loading is currently lacking. Herein, we progressively construct an evaluation system for PM2.5 productions based on daily NOx emissions in a typical industrial city (Jiyuan), considering a sequence of nested parameters involving evolutions of NO2 into nitric acid and then nitrate, and contributions of nitrate to PM2.5. The evaluation system was subsequently validated to better reproduce real increasing processes for PM2.5 pollution based on 19 pollution cases, with root mean square errors of 19.2 ± 16.4 %, suggesting the feasibility of developing NOx emission indicators linked to goals of mitigating atmospheric PM2.5. Additionally, further comparative results reveal that currently high NOx emissions in this industrial city severely hinder the achievement of atmospheric PM2.5 environmental capacity targets, especially in the scenarios of high initial PM2.5 level, low planetary boundary layer height and long pollution duration. It is anticipated that these methodologies and findings would supply guidelines for further regional PM2.5 mitigation, in which source-oriented NOx indicators could also provide some orientations for industrial cleaner production such as denitrification and low nitrogen combustion.

RESUMO

An efficient and stable bifunctional oxygen catalyst is necessary to complete the application of the rechargeable zinc-air battery. Herein, an economical and convenient process was adopted to successfully coat high-entropy alloy Fe12Ni23Cr10Co55-xMnx nanoparticles on carbon nanotubes (CNTs). In 0.1 M KOH solution, with a bifunctional oxygen overpotential (ΔE) of only 0.7 V, the catalyst Fe12Ni23Cr10Co30Mn25/CNT exhibits excellent bifunctional oxygen catalytic performance, exceeding most catalysts reported so far. In addition, the air electrode assembled with this catalyst exhibits high specific capacity (760 mA h g-1) and energy density (865.5 W h kg-1) in a liquid zinc-air battery, with a long-term cycle stability over 256 h. The density functional theory calculation points out that changing the atomic ratio of Co/Mn can change the adsorption energy of the oxygen intermediate (*OOH), which allows the ORR catalytic process to be accelerated in the alkaline environment, thereby increasing the ORR catalytic activity. This article has important implications for the progress of commercially available bifunctional oxygen catalysts and their applications in zinc-air batteries.

Graves' disease (GD) is characterized by diffuse enlargement and overactivity of the thyroid gland, which may be accompanied by other physical symptoms. Among them, depression can dramatically damage patients' quality of life, yet its prevalence in GD has not received adequate attention. Some studies have established a strong correlation between GD and increased risk of depression, though the data from current study remains limited. The summary of mechanistic insights regarding GD and depression has underpinned possible pathways by which GD contributes to depression. In this review, we first summarized the clinical evidence that supported the increased prevalence of depression by GD. We then concentrated on the mechanistic findings related to the acceleration of depression in the context of GD, as mounting evidence has indicated that GD promotes the development of depression through various mechanisms, including triggering autoimmune responses, inducing hormonal disorders, and influencing the thyroid-gut-microbiome-brain axis. Finally, we briefly presented potential therapeutic approaches to decreasing the risk of depression among patients with GD.
