RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The relationship between the dynamic changes in insulin resistance (IR) and the prognosis of septic patients remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the correlation between the clinical subphenotype of IR represented by the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index trajectory and the mortality rate among patients with sepsis. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we utilized data from septic patients within the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC)-IV database version 2.0 to construct trajectories of the TyG index over 72 h. Subsequently, we computed the similarity among various TyG index trajectories with the dynamic time warping (DTW) algorithm and utilized the hierarchical clustering (HC) algorithm to demarcate distinct cluster and identified subphenotypes according to the trajectory trend. Subsequently, we assessed the mortality risk between different subphenotypes using analyses such as survival analysis and validated the robustness of the results through propensity score matching (PSM) and various models. RESULTS: A total of 2350 patients were included in the study. Two trajectory trends: TyG index decreasing (n = 926) and TyG index increasing (n = 1424) were identified, which indicated corresponding to the clinical subphenotype of increased and alleviative IR respectively. The 28-day and in-hospital mortality for the increased IR group was 28.51% and 25.49% respectively. In comparison, patients in the alleviative IR group with a 28-day mortality of 23.54% and an in-hospital mortality of 21.60%. These subphenotypes exhibited distinct prognosis, time dependent Cox model showed the increased IR group with a higher 28-day mortality [hazard ratio (HR): 1.07, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.02-1.12, P = 0.01] and in-hospital mortality [HR: 1.05, 95% CI: 1.00-1.11, P = 0.045] compared to the alleviative IR group. Sensitivity analyses with various models further validated the robustness of our findings. CONCLUSION: Dynamic increase in the TyG index trajectory is associated with elevated mortality risk among patients with sepsis, which suggests that dynamic increased IR exacerbates the risk of poor outcomes in patients.

RESUMO

To enrich the properties of polylactic acid (PLA)-based composite films and improve the base degradability, in this study, a certain amount of poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) was added to PLA-based composite films, and PLA/PPC-based composite films were prepared by melt blending and hot-press molding. The effects of the introduction of PPC on the composite films were analyzed through in-depth studies on mechanical properties, water vapor and oxygen transmission rates, thermal analysis, compost degradability, and bacterial inhibition properties of the composite films. When the introduction ratio coefficient of PPC was 30%, the tensile strength of the composite film increased by 19.68%, the water vapor transmission coefficient decreased by 14.43%, and the oxygen transmission coefficient decreased by 18.31% compared to that of the composite film without PPC, the cold crystallization temperature of the composite film increased gradually from 96.9 °C to 104.8 °C, and PPC improved the crystallization ability of composite film. The degradation rate of the composite film with PPC increased significantly compared to the previous one, and the degradation rate increased with the increase in the PPC content. The degradation rate was 49.85% and 46.22% faster on average than that of the composite film without PPC when the degradation was carried out over 40 and 80 days; the composite film had certain inhibition, and the maximum diameter of the inhibition circle was 2.42 cm. This study provides a strategy for the development of PLA-based biodegradable laminates, which can promote the application of PLA-based laminates in food packaging.

RESUMO

The comprehension of spoken language is one of the most essential language functions in humans. However, the neurological underpinnings of auditory comprehension remain under debate. Here we used multi-modal neuroimaging analyses on a group of patients with low-grade gliomas to localize cortical regions and white matter tracts responsible for auditory language comprehension. Region-of-interests and voxel-level whole-brain analyses showed that cortical areas in the posterior temporal lobe are crucial for language comprehension. The fiber integrity assessed with diffusion tensor imaging of the arcuate fasciculus and the inferior longitudinal fasciculus was strongly correlated with both auditory comprehension and the grey matter volume of the inferior temporal and middle temporal gyri. Together, our findings provide direct evidence for an integrated network of auditory comprehension whereby the superior temporal gyrus and sulcus, the posterior parts of the middle and inferior temporal gyri serve as auditory comprehension cortex, and the arcuate fasciculus and the inferior longitudinal fasciculus subserve as crucial structural connectivity. These findings provide critical evidence on the neural underpinnings of language comprehension.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Independent associations of quantity and variety of fruit and vegetables (FVs) with mortality in older people are still unclear. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore the association between the quantity and variety in FV consumption and mortality in older Chinese. METHODS: A total of 19,597 participants of the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study aged >50 y were recruited from 2003 to 2006 and followed up until April 2021. The diet was assessed using a 300-item validated FFQ. Variety as a continuous variable was defined as the number of unique FV items (excluding potatoes, legumes, and fruit juices) intake per week over the past week. The associations of quantity and variety of FVs with mortality were analyzed, and analyses by the color of edible parts was performed. Multivariable Cox regression yielded HRs and 95% CIs. RESULTS: During 286,821 person-year of follow-up, 4385 deaths occurred, including 1678 cardiovascular diseases (CVD), 1450 cancer, and 1257 other causes. Compared with the lowest quintile of variety in FV, the highest quintile was associated with lower risks of all-cause (HR: 0.81; 95% CI: 0.73-0.89) and CVD mortality (HR: 0.79; 95% CI 0.67-0.92). A greater variety of green and white FV intake was associated with lower risks of all-cause and CVD morality, and a greater variety of red/purple FV intake was associated with lower risks of all-cause and cancer mortality. However, the quantity of FV intake showed no association with all-cause, CVD, and cancer mortality. CONCLUSION: Our findings have first showed that the variety, rather than quantity, in FV intake was associated with a lower risk of mortality in older Chinese. Dietary guidelines may recommend increasing the variety in FV intake, especially green, red/purple, and white FVs in older people.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: We examined the association between whole grain and refined grain intake with all-cause, cancer and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality using the data from the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study. METHODS: 19,597 participants aged 50+ years were recruited from 2003 to 2006 and followed-up until April 2021. Multivariable Cox regression was used to calculate hazard radios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Substitution analysis was used to replace a serving (50 g/day) of whole grain with a serving of refined grain. RESULTS: During 286,821 person-years of follow-up, 4385 deaths occurred, including 1450 from cancer, 1678 from CVD and 1257 from other causes. Compared with never whole grain intake, the highest intake category of whole grain (> 300 g/week) was associated with lower risk of all-cause (HR 0.90, 95% CI 0.82-0.98) and CVD mortality (HR 0.85, 0.74-0.98). Compared with the low-intake category of refined grain (< 500 g/day), the highest intake category (> 900 g/week) was associated with a lower risk of cancer mortality (HR 0.76, 0.62-0.95), but a higher risk of CVD mortality (HR 1.25, 1.03-1.51). No significant associations were found between whole grain intake and cancer mortality nor refined grain and all-cause mortality. The HRs of all-cause, cancer and CVD mortality substituting a serving of whole grain for refined grain were 0.96 (0.94-0.99), 1.01 (0.99-1.02) and 0.95 (0.90-0.99), respectively. CONCLUSION: We have first shown that in older Chinese, whole grain intake was associated with lower risk of all-cause and CVD mortality. Our results suggest that intake of whole grain of at least 300 g/week and refined grain of ≤ 900 g/day might be suitable for older Asian. Substituting 50 g/day of whole grain for refined grain was associated with a 4-5% lower risk of all-cause and CVD mortality.

RESUMO

In recent years, under the pressure of resource shortage and white pollution, the development and utilization of biodegradable wood-plastic composites (WPC) has become one of the hot spots for scholars' research. Here, corn straw fiber (CSF) was chosen to reinforce a poly(lactic acid) (PLA) matrix with a mass ratio of 3:7, and the CSF/PLA composites were obtained by melt mixing. The results showed that the mechanical properties of the corn straw fiber core (CSFC) and corn straw fiber skin (CSFS) loaded PLA composites were stronger than those of the CSFS/PLA composites when the particle size of CSF was low. The tensile strength and bending strength of CSFS/CSFC/PLA are 54.08 MPa and 87.24 MPa, respectively, and the elongation at break is 4.60%. After soaking for 8 hours, the water absorption of CSF/PLA composite reached saturation. When the particle size of CSF is above 80 mesh, the saturated water absorption of the material is kept below 7%, and CSF/PLA composite has good hydrophobicity, which is mainly related to the interfacial compatibility between PLA and CSF. By observing the microstructure of the cross section of the CSF/PLA composite, the research found that the smaller the particle size of CSF, the smoother the cross section of the composite and the more unified the dispersion of CSF in PLA. Therefore, exploring the composites formed by different components of CSF and PLA can not only expand the application range of PLA, but also enhance the application value of CSF in the field of composites.

RESUMO

The aim of our study was to compare the efficacy of two dosages of hepatitis B immunoglobulin (HBIG) combined with HBV vaccine (HBVac) to prevent mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of hepatitis B in HBsAg- and HBeAg-positive mother. We enrolled 331 mother-infant pairs with HBsAg- and HBeAg-positive maternal state from the Women's Hospital School of Medicine of Zhejiang University. Newborns were randomly distributed into two groups according to the dosages of HBIG injection: 100 IU and 200 IU. Newborns from both groups were injected with HBVac in the same doses. We compared the immune outcomes between the two groups and explore the influencing factors of immune outcomes through regression analysis. There was no statistically significant relationship between HBsAg serological transmission of newborns and dosages of HBIG in HBsAg- and HBeAg-positive mother (p > .05). The Logistic regression showed that high DNA load is a risk factor for passive-active immunoprophylaxis failure for both 100 IU and 200 IU group, but higher-dosage HBIG is not necessary for higher-viral-load pregnant women with HBsAg- and HBeAg-positive. In conclusion, combined application of HBVac and a single dose of 100 IU HBIG can achieve the ideal MTCT interruption results for HBsAg- and HBeAg-positive pregnant women.IMPACT STATEMENTWhat is already known on this subject? Passive-active immunoprophylaxis is proved to be effective in preventing mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis B. Hepatitis B vaccine combined with 100 IU or 200 IU immunoglobulin is mostly recommended in China. What do the results of this study add? At present, there is still a lack scientific basis for improving existing strategies and measures to prevent mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis B in China. What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? 100 IU and 200 IU immunoglobulin show equivalent blocking effect, and combined use of hepatitis B vaccine and 100 IU immunoglobulin is more cost-effective.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Adherence to a healthy lifestyle could reduce the cancer mortality in the western population. We conducted a city-wide prospective study in China investigating the association of a healthy lifestyle score with all-cause mortality and the life expectancy in cancer survivors. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 46,120 surviving patients who were firstly diagnosed with cancer in Guangzhou. Five low-risk lifestyle factors including never smoking, never alcohol use, regular physical activity (≥ 2 h/week), sufficient sleep (≥ 6 h/day), and normal or high BMI (≥ 18.5 kg/m2) were assessed and a lifestyle score (0-5, a higher score indicates healthier lifestyle) was generated. Hazard ratios (HRs) of all-cause mortality and the life expectancy by levels of the lifestyle scores were estimated. RESULTS: Of 46,120 cancer survivors registered from 2010 to 2017, during an average follow-up of 4.3 years (200,285 person-years), 15,209 deaths were recorded. Adjusted HRs for mortality in cancer survivors with lifestyle score of 0-2, versus 5, were 2.59 (95% confidence interval (CI): 2.03-3.30) in women, 1.91 (95%CI 1.77-2.05) in men, 2.28 (95%CI 2.03-2.55) in those aged <65 years, and 1.90 (95%CI 1.75, 2.05) in those aged ≥ 65 years. Life expectancy at age 55 for those with a score of 0-2 and 5 was 53.4 and 57.1 months, respectively. We also found that cancer survivors with healthy lifestyle scores of 5 showed 59.9 months of life expectancy on average, which was longer than those with a score of 0-2. CONCLUSION: Adopting a healthy lifestyle was associated with a substantially lower risk of all-cause mortality and longer life expectancy in cancer survivors. Our findings should be useful for health education and health promotion in primary care and clinical practice.

RESUMO

The explosively formed projectile (EFP) is an important type of warhead technology. To verify and evaluate its design and performance, EFP testing is an essential procedure. This work applies a newly developed dual-color laser photographic system (DCLPS) to diagnose the EFP in a flight. The main concepts of the DCLPS and image measurement theory are introduced in detail. The states of the EFP in flight are recorded via experiments at the Nanshan Test Center. High-quality sequential images are obtained by the DCLPS, and the measured key parameters agree well with the simulation results. Test time is only a few minutes, and the measurement error is less than 10%. This work demonstrates the considerable capability of the DCLPS for rapid diagnosis and measurement of an ultrafast EFP, and its great potential in similar observation applications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In 2005, the FDA cautioned that exposure to paroxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), during the first trimester of pregnancy may increase the risk of cardiac malformations. Since then, the association between maternal use of SSRIs during pregnancy and congenital malformations in infants has been the subject of much discussion and controversy. The aim of this study is to systematically review the associations between SSRIs use during early pregnancy and the risk of congenital malformations, with particular attention to the potential confounding by indication. METHODS: The study protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42018088358). Cohort studies on congenital malformations in infants born to mothers with first-trimester exposure to SSRIs were identified via PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library databases through 17 January 2018. Random-effects models were used to calculate summary relative risks (RRs). RESULTS: Twenty-nine cohort studies including 9,085,954 births were identified. Overall, use of SSRIs was associated with an increased risk of overall major congenital anomalies (MCAs, RR 1.11, 95% CI 1.03 to 1.19) and congenital heart defects (CHD, RR 1.24, 95% CI 1.11 to 1.37). No significantly increased risk was observed when restricted to women with a psychiatric diagnosis (MCAs, RR 1.04, 95% CI 0.95 to 1.13; CHD, RR 1.06, 95% CI 0.90 to 1.26). Similar significant associations were observed using maternal citalopram exposure (MCAs, RR 1.20, 95% CI 1.09 to 1.31; CHD, RR 1.24, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.51), fluoxetine (MCAs, RR 1.17, 95% CI 1.07 to 1.28; CHD, 1.30, 95% CI 1.12 to 1.53), and paroxetine (MCAs, RR 1.18, 95% CI 1.05 to 1.32; CHD, RR 1.17, 95% CI 0.97 to 1.41) and analyses restricted to using women with a psychiatric diagnosis were not statistically significant. Sertraline was associated with septal defects (RR 2.69, 95% CI 1.76 to 4.10), atrial septal defects (RR 2.07, 95% CI 1.26 to 3.39), and respiratory system defects (RR 2.65, 95% CI 1.32 to 5.32). CONCLUSIONS: The evidence suggests a generally small risk of congenital malformations and argues against a substantial teratogenic effect of SSRIs. Caution is advisable in making decisions about whether to continue or stop treatment with SSRIs during pregnancy.

RESUMO

Given the rising concern over the potential impact of environmental factors on metabolic heath, we conducted a cross-sectional analysis among 645 adults aged 20 and older in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), examining the association between nine phthalate metabolites (Mono-n-butyl phthalate (MBP), Mono-ethyl phthalate (MEP), Mono-(2-ethyl)-hexyl phthalate (MEHP), Mono-benzyl phthalate (MBzP), Mono-n-methyl phthalate (MnMP), Mono-(3-carboxy propyl) phthalate (MCPP), Mono-(2-ethyl-5-hydroxyhexyl) phthalate (MEHHP), Mono-(2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl) phthalate (MEOHP), Mono-isobutyl phthalate (MiBP)) and six glucose homeostasis indices (fasting glucose, fasting insulin, hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C), homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), single Point Insulin Sensitivity Estimator (SPISE), and HOMA-ß). Latent Class Analysis identified three phthalate metabolites exposure patterns: high MEP-low MEOHP (n = 282), high MBzP-low MEHHP (n = 214), and high MEHHP, MEOHP (n = 149). The high MBzP-low MEHHP and high MEHHP, MEOHP, versus the high MEP-low MEOHP, exposure groups showed significantly higher levels of fasting insulin (ß = 0.126, 95% CI: 0.023-0.228), SPISE (ß = 0.091, 95% CI: 0.018-0.164), and HOMA-IR (ß = 0.091, 95% CI: 0.018-0.164). In the shorter telomere length group, high MEHHP, MEOHP exposure showed an increase in SPISE levels (ß = 0.153, 95% CI: 0.037-0.269), while in the overweight/obese subgroup, high MEHHP, MEOHP exposure was significantly positively associated with HOMA-IR (ß = 0.392, 95% CI: 0.150-0.735). Bayesian kernel machine regression analyses showed positive associations between higher combined phthalate exposure and increased glucose homeostasis indices (fasting glucose, HbA1C, fasting insulin, SPISE, and HOMA-IR). The quantile of g-calculation analysis also supported the positive associations with HbA1C, HOMA-IR, and fasting insulin. Our findings indicate that phthalate exposure was positively associated with glucose homeostasis indices, which strengthen the call for proactive measures to reduce phthalate exposure and mitigate potential risks to glucose metabolism.

RESUMO

AIMS: This study endeavors to explore the ramifications of early dynamic blood glucose (BG) trajectories within the initial 48 h of intensive care unit (ICU) admission on mortality among critically ill heart failure (HF) patients. METHODS: The study employed a retrospective observational design, analyzing dynamic BG data of HF patients from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV database. The BG trajectory subphenotypes were identified using the hierarchical clustering based on the dynamic time-warping algorithm. The primary outcome of the study was 28-day mortality, with secondary outcomes including 180-day and 1-year mortality. RESULTS: We screened a total of 21,098 HF patients and finally 15,092 patients were included in the study. Our results identified three distinct BG trajectory subphenotypes: increasing (n = 3503), stabilizing (n = 6250), and decreasing (n = 5339). The increasing subphenotype was associated with the highest mortality risk at 28 days, 180 days, and 1 year. The stabilizing and decreasing subphenotypes showed significantly lower mortality risks across all time points, with hazard ratios ranging from 0.85 to 0.88 (P<0.05 for all). Sensitivity analyses confirmed the robustness of these findings after adjusting for various covariates. CONCLUSIONS: Increasing BG trajectory within 48 h of admission is significantly associated with higher mortality in patients with HF. It is necessary to devote greater attention to the early BG dynamic changes in HF patients to optimize clinical BG management and enhance patient prognosis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The optimal blood glucose (BG) level for patients with cardiogenic shock in the intensive care unit (ICU) remains unclear. Studies have found that both excessively high and low BG levels contribute to adverse cardiovascular events. Our study aims to investigate the optimal BG level for critically ill patients with cardiogenic shock and evaluate the effects of optimal BG on the prognosis of patients. METHODS: A total of 2013 patients with cardiogenic shock obtained from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC) IV database were included in the final cohort for our retrospective observational study for data analysis. The exposure was time-weighted average BG (TWA-BG), which was calculated by the time-series BG records and corresponding time stamps of patients with cardiogenic shock during their stay in the ICU. The cut-off value of TWA-BG was identified by the restricted cubic spline curve and included patients were categorized into three groups: low TWA-BG group (TWA-BG ≤ 104 mg/dl), optimal TWA-BG group (104 < TWA-BG ≤ 138 mg/dl), and high TWA-BG group (TWA-BG > 138 mg/dl). The primary outcome was 28-day mortality, and the secondary outcomes were ICU and in-hospital mortality. We performed the log-rank test to detect whether there is a difference in mortality among different groups in the original cohort. Multiple distinct models were employed to validate the robustness of the results. RESULTS: Our study revealed that the optimal BG level for critically ill patients with cardiogenic shock is 104-138 mg/dl. Compared to the optimal TWA-BG group, the low TWA-BG group (hazard ratio (HR): 1.67, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.19-2.33, p = 0.002) and high TWA-BG group (HR: 1.72, 95% CI: 1.46-2.03, p < 0.001) exhibited higher 28-day mortality. Similarly, the low TWA-BG group and high TWA-BG group demonstrated higher risks in terms of ICU mortality (low TWA-BG group: HR: 2.30, 95% CI: 1.40-3.79, p < 0.001; high TWA-BG group: HR: 1.77, 95% CI: 1.45-2.17, p < 0.001) and in-hospital mortality (low TWA-BG group: HR: 1.73, 95% CI: 1.19-2.51, p = 0.001; high TWA-BG group: HR: 1.64, 95% CI: 1.38-1.95, p < 0.001). Sensitivity analysis conducted through propensity score matching and the subgroup analysis further substantiated the robustness of the results. CONCLUSION: The optimal BG level for patients with cardiogenic shock is 104-138 mg/dl. BG levels below 104 mg/dl and above 138 mg/dl were associated with a less favorable prognosis.

RESUMO

Synthetic pyrethroid insecticides (SPIs) and neonicotinoid insecticides (NEOs), now dominant in the insecticide market, are increasingly found in aquatic environments. This study focused on six SPIs and five NEOs in aquatic products from four Chinese provinces (Shandong, Hubei, Shanxi and Zhejiang) and the risk assessment of the safety for the residents was conducted. It revealed significantly higher residues of Σ6SPIs (6.27-117.19 µg/kg) compared to Σ5NEOs (0.30-14.05 µg/kg), with SPIs more prevalent in fish and NEOs in shellfish. Carnivorous fish showed higher pesticide levels. Residues of these two types of pesticides were higher in carnivorous fish than in fish with other feeding habits. In the four regions investigated, the hazard quotient and hazard index of SPIs and NEOs were all <1, indicating no immediate health risk to human from single and compound contamination of the two types of pesticides in aquatic products. The present study provides valuable information for aquaculture management, pollution control and safeguarding human health.

RESUMO

Starch-based wood adhesives are widely used as environmentally friendly and formaldehyde-free alternatives in the manufacturing of wood products. However, their poor water resistance and inability to inhibit bacterial/fungal growth limit their practicality. To address this issue, a physicochemical double-crosslinked network structure between citric acid, starch, and wood was prepared in this study by physically entangling the wood structure and chemically crosslinking the starch molecules, with citric acid preventing the activity of various enzymes and denatured proteins within microbial cells, thereby inhibiting bacterial and fungal growth. In water resistance cycling tests, the resulting esterified starch plywood demonstrated a 47.6 % and 13.2 % increase in water resistance compared with starch plywood and commercially available phenolic resin plywood, respectively. In addition, the tighter intermolecular bonding in the crosslinked structure results in a 31 % increase in heat resistance. The physical "nailing" and chemical crosslinking between the adhesive and the wood improved considerably the bonding strength to 98.36 %. The dual role of the physicochemical crosslinking of starch adhesives provides a straightforward strategy for the preparation of inexpensive, water-resistant, and fungal/bacterial-resistant starch adhesives, thus contributing to the promotion of starch adhesives.

RESUMO

IMPORTANCE: The reprogramming of lipid metabolism is a significant feature of tumors, yet the circulating levels of fatty acids in lung cancer patients remain to be explored. Moreover, the association between fatty acid levels and related factors, including nutritional intake, tumor metabolism, and tumor immunity, has been rarely discussed. OBJECTIVES: To explore the differences in serum free fatty acids between lung cancer patients and healthy controls, and investigate the factors associated with this phenomenon. DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS: A case-control study enrolled 430 primary lung cancer patients and 430 healthy controls. The whole population had a medium [Q1, Q3] age of 48.0 [37.0, 58.9] years, with females comprising 56% of the participants. The absolute quantification of 27 serum free fatty acids (FFAs) was measured using a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) detection. Data, including dietary intake, blood indicators, and gene expression of lung tissues, were obtained from questionnaires, blood tests, and RNA-sequencing. Statistical differences in FFA levels between lung cancer patients and healthy controls were investigated, and related contributing factors were explored. RESULTS: Levels of 22 FFAs were significantly higher in lung cancer patients compared to those in healthy controls, with fold changes ranging from 1.14 to 1.69. Lung cancer diagnosis models built with clinical and FFA features yielded an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of 0.830 (0.780-0.880). Total fatty acids (TFAs), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) showed no significant dietary-serum associations, indicating that the elevations might not be attributed to an excessive intake of relevant fatty acids from the diet. For RNA-sequencing of lung tissues, among the 68 lipid metabolism genes, 26 genes showed significant upregulation (FDR < 0.05), while 33 genes exhibited significant downregulation, indicating the involvement of the fatty acids in the tumor metabolism. Through joint analysis with immune cells and inflammatory factors in the blood, fatty acids might exert suppressing effects on tumor immunity. CONCLUSIONS: Lung cancer patients had elevated levels of serum free fatty acids compared to healthy individuals. The elevations might not be attributed to an excessive intake of relevant fatty acids from the diet but related to pathological factors of tumor metabolism and immunity. These findings will complement research on fatty acid metabolism of lung cancer and provide insights into potential intervention targets.

RESUMO

Background: Evidence about the associations between Cantonese dietary patterns and mortality is scarce. We examined the prospective association of the dietary pattern with all-cause, cancer and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in older Chinese. Methods: We included 19 598 participants of a Guangzhou Biobank cohort study aged 50+ years, who were recruited from 2003 to 2006 and followed up until July, 2022. The diet was assessed by using a 300-item validated food frequency questionnaire. The food items were collapsed into 27 food groups. Factor analysis (FA) was used to identify dietary patterns. Multivariable Cox regression produced hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for mortality. Results: During 305 410 person-years, 4966 deaths including 1971 CVD, 1565 cancer and 1436 other-causes occurred. Four dietary patterns were identified by FA. No association of the vegetable-based dietary pattern with all-cause, CVD and cancer mortality was found. Compared with the lowest quartile of the healthy Cantonese dietary pattern score, the highest quartile showed lower risks of all-cause (HR 0.86, 95% CI 0.80-0.94) and CVD mortality (HR 0.84, 95% CI 0.72-0.97). The highest quartile of the nut and fruit dietary pattern showed lower risks of all-cause (HR 0.92, 95% CI 0.85-0.99) and CVD mortality (HR 0.82, 95% CI 0.72-0.93), while the unhealthy western dietary pattern was associated with a higher risk of all-cause (HR 1.10, 95% CI 1.01-1.19) and cerebrovascular disease mortality (HR 1.28, 95% CI 1.03-1.58). Conclusion: We have first identified four dietary patterns based on the Cantonese cuisine and found that healthy Cantonese and nut and fruit dietary patterns were associated with lower risks of all-cause and CVD mortality, whereas the unhealthy western dietary pattern was associated with a higher risk of all-cause and cerebrovascular disease mortality.

RESUMO

The rapid emergence of microfluidic paper-based devices as point-of-care testing (POCT) tools for early disease diagnosis and health monitoring, particularly in resource-limited areas, holds immense potential for enhancing healthcare accessibility. Leveraging the numerous advantages of paper, such as capillary-driven flow, porous structure, hydrophilic functional groups, biodegradability, cost-effectiveness, and flexibility, it has become a pivotal choice for microfluidic substrates. The repertoire of microfluidic paper-based devices includes one-dimensional lateral flow assays (1D LFAs), two-dimensional microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (2D µPADs), and three-dimensional (3D) µPADs. In this comprehensive review, we provide and examine crucial information related to paper substrates, design strategies, and detection methods in multi-dimensional microfluidic paper-based devices. We also investigate potential applications of microfluidic paper-based devices for detecting viruses, metabolites and hormones in non-invasive samples such as human saliva, sweat and urine. Additionally, we delve into capillary-driven flow alternative theoretical models of fluids within the paper to provide guidance. Finally, we critically examine the potential for future developments and address challenges for multi-dimensional microfluidic paper-based devices in advancing noninvasive early diagnosis and health monitoring. This article showcases their transformative impact on healthcare, paving the way for enhanced medical services worldwide.

RESUMO

Biomass-derived biochar shows broad promise for persistent organic pollutants (POPs) degradation and thus establishes a more sustainable homestead. However, effective catalytic performance is still challenging. Herein, an efficient catalyst (Prussian blue decorated wood-derived biochar, PBB) was constructed by introducing Prussian blue (PB) into wood-based biochar to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for removing POPs. After anchoring of PB, the degradation performance of biochar was enhanced (degradation efficiency of methylene blue (MB, 20 mg/L) increased from 52% of biochar to 95% of PBB within 60 min). The PBB presents effective MB degradation performance with a wide pH value (3.0 < pH < 11.0) or co-existing diverse anions (Cl-, NO3-, H2PO4-, and HCO3-). Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis as well as electrochemical tests confirmed that the non-radical pathway (1O2) is the key to biochar activation of PMS, but by restricting PB into the biochar, the radical pathway (SO4•- and •OH), the non-radical pathway (1O2), and direct electron transfer can work together to activate PMS. In addition, the degradation efficiency could remain about 80% after five-time cyclic tests. This work elucidates the role of PB nanoparticles in enhancing biochar catalysts, which can inspire the development of a carbon-neutralized, cost-effective, and effective strategy for POPs removal.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The fruit of Phyllanthus emblica L., a traditional medicine in China and India, is used to treat diabetes mellitus. Its water extract (WEPE) has demonstrated hypoglycemic effects in diabetic rats, but its mechanisms on glucose utilization and insulin resistance in skeletal muscle remain unclear. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effects and underlying mechanisms of WEPE on glucose utilization and insulin resistance using C2C12 myotubes. METHODS: Effects of WEPE on glucose uptake, GLUT4 translocation, and AMPK and AKT phosphorylation were investigated in C2C12 myotubes and palmitate-treated myotubes. An AMPK inhibitor and siRNA were used to explore the mechanisms of WEPE. Glucose uptake was determined using a 2-(N-(7-nitrobenz-2-oxa-1,3-diazol-4-yl) amino)-2-deoxyglucose (2-NBDG) uptake assay, and protein expression and GLUT4 translocation were assessed via western blotting. RESULTS: In normal myotubes, WEPE significantly stimulated glucose uptake and GLUT4 translocation to the plasma membrane at concentrations of 125 and 250 µg/mL. This was accompanied by an increase in the phosphorylation of AMPK and its downstream targets. However, both compound C and AMPK siRNA blocked the WEPE-induced GLUT4 translocation and glucose uptake. Moreover, pretreatment with STO-609, a calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase kinase ß (CaMKKß) inhibitor, inhibited WEPE-induced AMPK phosphorylation and attenuated the WEPE-stimulated glucose uptake and GLUT4 translocation. In myotubes treated with palmitate, WEPE prevented palmitate-induced insulin resistance by enhancing insulin-mediated glucose uptake and AKT phosphorylation. It also restored the insulin-mediated translocation of GLUT4 from cytoplasm to membrane. However, these effects of WEPE on glucose uptake and GLUT4 translocation were blocked by pretreatment with compound C. CONCLUSIONS: WEPE significantly stimulated basal glucose uptake though CaMKKß/AMPK pathway and markedly ameliorated palmitate-induced insulin resistance by activating the AMPK pathway in C2C12 myotubes.
