RESUMO

Plastics are a recent particulate material in Earth's history. Because of plastics persistence and wide-range presence, it has a great potential of being a global age marker and correlation tool between sedimentary profiles. In this research, we query whether microplastics can be considered among the array of proxies to delimit the Anthropocene Epoch (starting from the year 1950 and above). We present a study of microplastics deposition history inferred from sediment profiles of lakes in northeastern Europe. The sediments were dated with independent proxies from the present back to the first half of the 18th century. Regardless of the sediment layer age, microplastic particles were found throughout the cores in all sites. Depending on particles' aspect ratio, less elongated particles were found deeper, while more elongated particles and fibers have reduced mobility. We conclude that interpretation of microplastics distribution in the studied sediment profiles is ambiguous and does not strictly indicate the beginning of the Anthropocene Epoch.

RESUMO

Discerning ecosystem change and food web dynamics underlying anthropogenic eutrophication and the introduction of non-native species is necessary for ensuring the long-term sustainability of fisheries and lake biodiversity. Previous studies of eutrophication in Lake Victoria, eastern Africa, have focused on the loss of endemic fish biodiversity over the past several decades, but changes in the plankton communities over this same time remain unclear. To fill this gap, we examined sediment cores from a eutrophic embayment, Mwanza Gulf, to determine the timing and magnitude of changes in the phytoplankton and zooplankton assemblages over the past century. Biogeochemical proxies indicate nutrient enrichment began around ~ 1920 CE and led to rapid increases in primary production, and our analysis of photosynthetic pigments revealed three zones: pre-eutrophication (prior to 1920 CE), onset of eutrophication with increases in all pigments (1920-1990 CE), and sustained eutrophication with cyanobacterial dominance (1990 CE-present). Cladoceran remains indicate an abrupt decline in biomass in ~ 1960 CE, in response to the cumulative effects of eutrophication and lake-level rise, preceding the collapse of haplochromine cichlids in the 1980s. Alona and Chydorus, typically benthic littoral taxa, have remained at relatively low abundances since the 1960s, whereas the abundance of Bosmina, typically a planktonic taxon, increased in the 1990s concurrently with the biomass recovery of haplochromine cichlid fishes. Overall, our results demonstrate substantial changes over the past century in the biomass structure and taxonomic composition of Mwanza Gulf phytoplankton and zooplankton communities, providing a historical food web perspective that can help understand the recent changes and inform future resource management decisions in the Lake Victoria ecosystem. RESUMO

Despite varved sediments being widely used for paleolimnological studies, little information is available about how climate and meteorological signals are recorded in varves at sub-seasonal to annual scale. We investigate links between meteorological and limnological conditions and their influence on biochemical varve formation and preservation of sub-seasonal climate signals in the sediments. Our study site is postglacial Lake Zabinskie located in NE Poland, in which thick and complex varved sediments have been studied for the last decade. These sediments provide an excellent material for studying the influence of short-term weather conditions on geological records. For this, we use an almost decade-long (2012-2019) series of observational data (meteorological conditions, physicochemical water parameters, and modern sedimentation observations) to understand varve formation processes. Then we compare these results with a high-resolution biogeochemical proxy dataset based on µXRF and hyperspectral imaging (HSI) measurements of a varved sediment core spanning the same period. Here we show direct links between the meteorological and limnological conditions and varve formation processes. This is particularly the case for air temperature which governs calcite laminae formation and primary production. We further show that calcite grain size is influenced by lake mixing intensity resulting from the wind activity, and that holomixis events lead to the formation of distinct manganese (Mn) peaks in the typically anoxic sediments. Our findings show that high-resolution non-destructive spectroscopy methods applied to complex biochemical varves, in combination with long observational limnological datasets, provide useful information for tracking meteorological and limnological processes in the past.

RESUMO

We present a dataset of subfossil chironomid assemblages in the MUT-10 sediment core obtained from the high alpine lake Mutterbergersee in the Austrian Alps in 2010. The data were presented in the research article by Ilyashuk et al. (2019) "The Little Ice Age signature in a 700-year high-resolution chironomid record of summer temperatures in the Central Eastern Alps". In addition to the results of the chironomid analysis of 100 sediment samples presented in this article, we also include chironomid assemblage data from an additional 48 sediment samples that complement this dataset. The data includes raw chironomid counts, percent abundance of chironomid taxa, as well as mean July air temperature estimates derived from the chironomid record based on a chironomid-temperature transfer function. We also provide information on age-dating of the sedimentary sequence. Given the high temporal resolution and the robust age-depth model of the record, the chironomid-based reconstruction of temperature since AD 1300 provides a detailed documentation of climate change in the Eastern Alps from the Little Ice Age onwards and can be used for comparison with other independent proxy-based climate reconstructions. In addition to the data, we detail the sample processing for subfossil chironomid analysis and provide a detailed description of the reconstruction technique used for producing chironomid-based quantitative temperature inferences.

RESUMO

Eutrophication and anoxia are increasing in lakes worldwide. However, our understanding of variations of primary productivity and anoxia in lakes over thousands of years is limited. Long-term records are needed to understand the natural variability of lake ecosystems and to improve our understanding of drivers of productivity and anoxia. In this study, we used the varved sediment record of Lake Zabinskie, Poland to answer the following research questions: 1) How have primary production and water column oxygen concentrations varied during the past 10,800 years?; 2) what role did natural and anthropogenic forces have in driving changes in primary production or lake mixing regime? Recently developed hyperspectral imaging (HSI) techniques were used to quantify sedimentary chloropigments-a and bacteriopheopigments-a (Bphe-a) at sub-annual resolution. These data, combined with elemental data from micro X-ray fluorescence (µ-XRF) and pigment assemblage data from high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) measurements, were used to reconstruct paleolimnological conditions. Bphe-a was used as an indicator of anoxia, and its presence suggests that an extensive anoxic zone was present nearly continuously from 10.8 to 2.8 ka BP. Anoxic conditions, driven by thermal stratification, were promoted by closed forest cover during that time, which limited wind-driven mixing of the water column. After 2.8 ka BP, water column oxygenation occurred more frequently, particularly during periods of increased human agricultural activity and forest opening. Pronounced anoxia was again present continuously from ~610 to 1470 CE, concurrent with a period of reforestation. After ~1610 CE, deforestation caused increases in erosion rates, algal production, and water column oxygenation. Pigment assemblages indicate that the algal community during the past 150 years was different from any other time during the Holocene. This study demonstrates a clear link between lake biogeochemical processes and forest cover and shows the potential of HSI to produce extremely high-resolution records of past productivity and redox conditions from varved lake sediments.

RESUMO

Historical records of trace elements in lake sediments provide source-to-sink information about potentially toxic pollutants across space and time. We investigated two lakes located at different elevations in the Ecuadorian Andes to understand how trace element fluxes are related to (i) geology, (ii) erosion in the watersheds, and (iii) local point sources and atmospheric loads. In remote Lake Fondococha (4150 m a.s.l.), total Hg fluxes stay constant between ca. 1760 and 1950 and show an approximately 4.4-fold increase between pre-1950 and post-1950 values. The post-1950 increase in fluxes of other trace elements (V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb) is lower (2.1-3.0-fold) than for Hg. Mostly lithogenic sources and enhanced soil erosion contribute to their post-1950 increase (lithogenic contribution: > 85%, Hg: ~ 58%). Average post-1950 Hg fluxes are approximately 4.3 times higher in peri-urban Lake Llaviucu (3150 m a.s.l.) than in the remote Lake Fondococha. Post-1950 fluxes of the other trace elements showed larger differences between Lakes Fondococha and Llaviucu (5.2 < 25-29.5-fold increase; Ni < Pb-Cd). The comparison of the post-1950 average trace element fluxes that are derived from point and airborne sources revealed 5-687 (Hg-Pb) times higher values in Lake Llaviucu than in Lake Fondococha suggesting that Lake Llaviucu's proximity to the city of Cuenca strongly influences its deposition record (industrial emissions, traffic, caged fishery). Both lakes responded with temporary drops in trace element accumulations to park regulations in the 1970s and 1990s, but show again increasing trends in recent times, most likely caused by increase in vehicular traffic and openings of copper and gold mines around Cajas National Park.

RESUMO

This study explores the long-term drivers of changes in lake mixing regime and the causes of lacustrine anoxia in the 2000 year-long, varved sediment record from Lake Zabinskie in northeastern Poland. Annually resolved geochemical data (µXRF and CNS) and pollen data were used to find links between changes in catchment land use and lake mixing regime. Furthermore, we tested the applicability of the Fe/Mn ratio for the reconstruction of past water ventilation. Multivariate statistical analyses show that Fe and Mn were mostly independent of terrestrial inputs and lake trophy, meaning that the Fe/Mn ratio mainly responded to changes in redox potential in hypolimnetic waters. Characteristic changes of the Fe/Mn ratio corresponded to transformations of woodland cover in the catchment as registered by changes of the arboreal/non-arboreal pollen ratio. Six main phases of different lake mixing intensity were distinguished. The local landscape was more open during phases of intensified human impact and catchment deforestation, leading to the intensification of lake mixing. At times of negligible human impact, the catchment was mostly wooded, and thus the lake was well sheltered from intense wind-driven mixing. This led to periods of prolonged anoxia. The Fe/Mn record accurately traced past changes in lake mixing intensity and related shifts in water column oxygenation. During the last two millennia, the mixing regime of Lake Zabinskie mostly depended on human activity in the catchment and landscape openness, while long periods of anoxia were not exclusive to only the most recent sediments.

RESUMO

An isotopic monitoring was undertaken in 2012-2014 at Lake Zabinskie (Mazurian Lakeland, NE Poland). The aim was to identify the factors and processes controlling an isotopic composition of the lake water and to explore the mechanism responsible for recording the climatic signal in stable isotope composition of deposited carbonates. δ18O and δ2H in the precipitation, lake water column, inflows and outflow, δ18O and δ13C in the carbonate fraction of sediments trapped in the water column were recorded with monthly resolution. A relationship between δ18O and δ2H in local precipitation was used to estimate the local meteoric water line. The dataset obtained for the water enabled to identify the modification of the water's isotopic composition due to evaporation, connected with seasonal lake water stratification and mixing patterns. Statistically significant correlation coefficients suggest that the δ18O of the carbonate fraction in the sediment traps depends on the δ18O of rainfall water and on air temperature. The fractionation coefficient α shows that in summer months the carbonate precipitation process is closest to equilibrium. As expected for an exorheic lake, no significant correlation was observed between δ18O and δ13C in precipitated carbonate.

RESUMO

The temporal profiles of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) in lake sediments reflect past changes in emissions, transport and deposition of these pollutants and, thus, record natural and anthropogenic processes. We document fluxes of PACs [(polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs) and azaarenes (AZAs)] deposited in two tropical high-altitude lakes in the Cajas National Park (Ecuadorian Andes, 2°50'S, 79°10'W). In remote and high elevation Laguna Fondococha (4130m a.s.l.), the temporal fluxes of OPAHs and AZAs were similar to those of PAHs suggesting similar sources. A significant increase of PAC deposition after the 1950s reflects Ecuador's economic development. PAH fluxes were relatively low (∑27PAHs (without retene and perylene): 0.86-11.21ngcm-2yr-1) with a composition pattern typical for long-range atmospheric transport (high 9-fluorenone/fluorene ratios) and biomass burning (30% low molecular weight PAHs). PAHs diagnostic of high temperature combustion (industry, traffic) make up 20-25% of total PAHs. Perylene concentrations increase linearly with increasing sediment depth suggesting diagenetic in-situ production. At lower elevations (Laguna Llaviucu, 3140m a.s.l.) and closer to urban areas, PAC fluxes in the past decades were 4-5 times higher than in the remote high-elevation lake. Laguna Llaviucu also showed higher concentrations of high molecular weight pyrogenic PAHs and a greater diversity of AZAs. Individual OPAHs and AZAs reflect mainly combustion activities. In Laguna Llaviucu, which is at a lower elevation (3140m a.s.l.) and closer to the city, molecular ratios suggest short-range atmospheric transport and deposition of PACs. A very foggy climate (170 rainy days per year) with the precipitation maximum at 3500m removes PACs very efficiently (by wet deposition) from the atmosphere at very short distances from emission sources. This partly explains why L. Llaviucu shows higher fluxes of PACs than the higher elevation L. Fondococha. This study presents the first historical record of organic pollutants from environmental archives in Ecuador.

RESUMO

We investigated sediments from 23 lakes situated in northeastern Poland and analyzed them for major constituents and selected heavy metals. Short sediment cores were collected from the deepest parts of the lakes, and subsequently, a surface layer (0-2 cm) and reference layer (50-52 cm) were sampled from each. In the collected samples, the content of the major constituents (organic matter, carbonates, and minerogenic material) and chosen heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) was analyzed. In the reference layer, representing natural metal content, we identified quite a substantial diversity among lakes, making it difficult to pinpoint one geochemical background value for the whole region. A multivariate analysis of the interrelationships among elements and a comparison of the median values revealed no statistically significant differences between surface and reference levels. The ratio of the mean content in the surface and reference sediments ranged from 0.9 to 1.6, indicating the lack of or only slight anthropogenic pollution in surface sediments. From a spatial perspective, higher metal contents were observed in the eastern part of the study area, but this trend manifested in both surface and reference sediments. Thus, the inference is that the recently accumulated sediments are characterized by a content that is representative of the natural geochemical background for the selected metals.
