RESUMO

Free available chlorine has been and is being applied in global water treatment and readily reacts with dissolved organic matter (DOM) in aquatic environments, leading to the formation of chlorinated products. Chlorination enhances the photoreactivity of DOM, but the influence of chlorinated compounds on the photogeneration of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) has remained unexplored. In this study, a range of chlorinated carboxylate-substituted phenolic model compounds were employed to assess their •OH photogeneration capabilities. These compounds demonstrated a substantial capacity for •OH production, exhibiting quantum yields of 0.1-5.9 × 10-3 through direct photolysis under 305 nm and 0.2-9.5 × 10-3 through a triplet sensitizer (4-benzoylbenzoic acid)-inducing reaction under 365 nm LED irradiation. Moreover, the chlorinated compounds exhibited higher light absorption and •OH quantum yields compared to those of their unchlorinated counterparts. The •OH photogeneration capacity of these compounds exhibited a positive correlation with their triplet state one-electron oxidation potentials. Molecular-level compositional analysis revealed that aromatic structures rich in hydroxyl and carboxyl groups (e.g., O/C > 0.5 with H/C < 1.5) within DOM serve as crucial sources of •OH, and chlorination of these compounds significantly enhances their capacity to generate •OH upon irradiation. This study provides novel insights into the enhanced photogeneration of •OH from chlorinated DOM, which is helpful for understanding the fate of trace pollutants in chlorinated waters.

RESUMO

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection has been the leading cause of gastric cancer development. In recent years, the resistance of H. pylori against antibiotic treatment has been a great challenge for most countries worldwide. Since biofilm formation is one of the reasons for the antibiotic resistance of H. pylori, and phototherapy has emerged as a promisingly alternative antibacterial treatment, herein the bacteria-targeted near-infrared (NIR) photosensitizer (T780T-Gu) by combining positively-charged guanidinium (Gu) with an efficient phototherapeutic agent T780T is developed. The proposed molecule T780T-Gu exhibits synergistic photothermal therapy/photodynamic therapy effect against both H. pylori biofilms and multidrug-resistant (MDR) clinical strains. More importantly, the phototherapy mechanism of T780T-Gu acquired by the RNA-seq analysis indicates that structural deficiency as well as a decrease in metabolism and defense activity are the possible reasons for the efficient H. pylori phototherapy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND Patients with chronic ankle instability (CAI) can present with abnormal gait. The purpose of this study was to evaluate plantar pressure distributions and posture balance during walking in unilateral CAI patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS We recruited 24 unilateral CAI patients and 24 healthy individuals; plantar pressure analysis was conducted using the Footscan® 3D pressure system. The following parameters were assessed and recorded: peak force/weight (PF/W), time to peak force (TPF), time to boundary (TTB), and COP velocity. The differences between the affected and unaffected side of the CAI group and control group were determined. Pearson correlation analysis and univariate analysis was used to investigate the correlation between plantar pressure parameters and related factors. RESULTS The comparison of PF/W showed that the plantar pressure of both sides in the CAI group were laterally distributed. The comparison of TPF, TTB, and COP velocity in different groups showed that the posture balance on the affected side of CAI patient was more impaired than the unaffected side and the control group. Male patients with CAI tend to have better posture balance than females, and a low CAIT score is correlated with poor posture balance. CONCLUSIONS The plantar pressure on both sides in unilateral CAI patients was laterally distributed and their balance function was impaired. It is necessary for CAI patients to receive functional training of both sides during rehabilitation, and plantar pressure analysis is promising for diagnosis and evaluation of CAI.

RESUMO

Calcium peroxide (CP) is an oxidizing agent that can gradually release hydrogen peroxide (HP) to achieve selective killing of cyanobacteria in water blooms, and reduce the phosphorus content in the water column. Despite the potential of CP for use in cyanobacterial water bloom disposal, there is a lack of research on the mechanism of oxidative damage on cyanobacterial cells by calcium peroxide. Further studies are required to comprehend the underlying scientific principles and potential risks and benefits of applying this approach to cyanobacteria disposal. In this investigation, we employed varying doses of CP for the treatment of Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa), which resulted in the following findings: (1) the HP released from CP can damage the photosystem II of M. aeruginosa, reduce cell photosynthetic pigment content, intensify the degree of membrane lipid peroxidation, and increase the extracellular protein content; (2) CP significantly increased the soluble extracellular polysaccharide (sEPS) and bound extracellular polysaccharide (bEPS) content of cells (p < 0.05), causing the cells to exist as agglomerates and effectively allowing them to flocculate and precipitate, reducing the turbidity of the water body; (3) The increased dose elevated the pH and calcium ions significantly decreased the orthophosphate content, resulting in an increase in extracellular alkaline phosphatase activity, but possibly increasing the total extracellular nitrogen content. These results suggested that CP is an effective chemical algaecide for cyanobacteria, and has the potential to be applied to dispose of cyanobacterial blooms while reducing the phosphorus content of the water column and further inhibiting the growth and proliferation of cells.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Evaluate the effectiveness of posterior percutaneous full-endoscopic technique for patients with thoracic myelopathy caused by ossification of ligamentum flavum (TOLF). METHODS: A prospective study was conducted for 16 patients with TOLF, who were treated with posterior endoscopic technique from 2017 to 2019. The sagittal and cross-sectional CT images are used to measure the area of ossified ligamentum and evaluate the decompression of surgery, respectively. The effectiveness was evaluated with visual analog scale (VAS), modified Japanese Orthopedic Association scale (mJOA), The Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and Macnab efficacy evaluation. RESULTS: The average area of TOLF on sagittal and cross-sectional CT images in the 16 patients was (116.62 ± 32.72) mm2 and (141.59 ± 27.25) mm2 preoperatively, (15.99 ± 12.54) mm2 and (11.72 ± 8.64) mm2 at 3 days after the operation, (16.78 ± 11.49) mm2 and (10.82 ± 7.57) mm2 postoperative 1 year, respectively. The invasive proportion of spinal canal at preoperative sagittal and cross-sectional CT images was (48.10 ± 10.04) % and (57.58 ± 11.37) %, which decreased to (6.83 ± 4.48) % and (4.40 ± 3.01) % at the final follow-up. The average score of mJOA, VAS and ODI improved. The excellent and good rate was 87.50% according to Macnab evaluation. Compared with preoperative, differences in areas of TOLF, proportions of spinal canal, and clinical assessments of postoperative 3 days and 1 year were all statistically significant. Two cases of dural tear were observed. CONCLUSION: Endoscopic surgery has a good clinical effect on TOLF, which has the advantage of less trauma to the paraspinal muscles and no impact on the spinal structure. The CT-based radiographic measurements can quantitatively evaluate the degree of spinal canal stenosis in TOLF.

RESUMO

Mechanoluminescence materials that emit light under mechanical stimulation have attracted widespread attention in sensing, anticounterfeiting, and imaging applications. In this study, a series of Sr1-xBixZnSO (0.001 ≤ x ≤ 0.1) samples was synthesized by the method of high temperature solid-state reaction. It is worth noting that the distortion degree of the SrO3S3 octahedron was increased with increasing Bi3+ concentration, and the color manipulated Sr1-xBixZnSO which can emit different photoluminescence (blue to dark blue and finally red) and mechanoluminescence (orange to red) colors is obtained. Moreover, the deep traps can stably store and provide electronic supplements in shallow traps released under mechanical stimulation. Therefore, devices made of SrZnSO:Bi3+ phosphor and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) can be used as thermo-mechano-opto three-mode anticounterfeiting. The ML intensity is linear to the external load and can be utilized for stress sensing or imaging.

RESUMO

In recent years, the risk from environmental pollution caused by chloramphenicol (CAP) has emerged as a serious concern worldwide, especially for the co-selection of antibiotic resistance microorganisms simultaneously exposed to CAP and salts. In this study, the multistage contact oxidation reactor (MCOR) was employed for the first time to treat the CAP wastewater under the co-existence of CAP (10-80 mg/L) and salinity (0-30 g/L NaCl). The CAP removal efficiency reached 91.7% under the co-existence of 30 mg/L CAP and 10 g/L NaCl in the influent, but it fluctuated around 60% with the increase of CAP concentration and salinity. Trichococcus and Lactococcus were the major contributors to the CAP and salinity shock loads. Furthermore, the elevated CAP and salinity selection pressures inhibited the spread of CAP efflux pump genes, including cmlA, tetC, and floR, and significantly affected the composition and abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). As the potential hosts of CAP resistance genes, Acinetobacter, Enterococcus, and unclassified_d_Bacteria developed resistance against high osmotic pressure and antibiotic environment using the efflux pump mechanism. The results also revealed that shifting of potential host bacteria significantly contributed to the change in ARGs. Overall, the co-existence of CAP and salinity promoted the enrichment of core genera Trichococcus and Lactococcus; however, they inhibited the proliferation of ARGs. KEY POINTS: • Trichococcus and Lactococcus were the core bacteria related to CAP biodegradation • Co-existence of CAP and salinity inhibited proliferation of cmlA, tetC, and floR • The microorganism resisted the CAP using the efflux pump mechanism.

RESUMO

We theoretically investigate the high-order harmonic generation (HHG) of the monolayer hexagonal boron nitride by two-color laser pulses, based on the ab initio time-dependent density-functional theory. We find that the waveform of the two-color laser field can dramatically control the harmonic spectrum. The two-color laser field can enhance the harmonic radiation more efficiently than the monochromatic pulse laser with the same incident energy. We investigate the influence of incident laser pulse parameters on the harmonic radiation, such as the relative phase of the two-color field, the amplitude ratio between component electric fields, and the laser orientation. We show that the HHG spectrum is controlled by both the electric field and the vector potential. The electronic band structure and the laser-matter energy transfer play an important role in determining the laser polarization for optimal HHG in the hBN crystal. Our work supplies a scheme to manipulate HHGs in two-dimensional materials and provides a potential methodology for the generation of intense extreme-ultraviolet pulses.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of artificial skin on the expression of miR-155 and miR-506-3p in patients with second-degree burns. METHODS: The study subjects included 50 patients with second-degree burns treated from July 2019 to July 2021. The control group received routine nursing, while the research group received both routine and artificial skin intervention simultaneously. The changes in wound tissue fibrosis and prognosis were observed. The expression levels of miR-155 and miR-506-3p and their downstream regulatory factors were detected and correlated with the rehabilitation of patients after artificial skin treatment. RESULTS: After treating second-degree burns with artificial skin membranes, the patient's wound tissue fibrosis and inflammation level improved. At the same time, the expression levels of miR-155 and miR-506-3p in related tests were higher than those in patients with available treatment. CONCLUSION: The effect of artificial skin membrane on the wound healing of second-degree burn patients may be realized by influencing the expression levels of miR-155 and miR-506-3p and their related signaling pathways.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: There are few studies on the clinical outcomes of osteochondral autologous transplantation (OAT) harvesting from local talar non-weight-bearing articular facets for the treatment of osteochondral lesions of the talus (OLTs). The purpose of this study was to review the short- to midterm outcomes of our patients who were treated with OAT harvesting from ipsilateral talar articular facets for OLTs. METHODS: Between December 2010 and November 2018, 24 patients were enrolled in this study. There were 16 males and eight females with an average age of 39.1 years and a follow-up period of 50.9 months. The clinical results were evaluated according to the American Orthopedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) ankle-hindfoot score and the visual analogue scale (VAS) score. Pre-operative plain radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, post-operative radiographs, and X-ray and computed tomography (CT) scans at the last follow-up were observed. RESULTS: There was a significant improvement in the AOFAS score from 61.3 ± 19.0 pre-operatively to 84.9 ± 9.2 post-operatively (P < 0.001). The VAS score improved from 6.1 ± 2.3 to 2.0 ± 1.4 at the last follow-up (P < 0.001). Twenty-one patients (87.5%) were satisfied with their clinical results. By the last follow-up CT scan, there was bone cyst formation at the donor sites in three patients, at the recipient sites in five patients and at both sites in five patients. Two patients (8.3%) underwent re-operation with arthroscopic debridement because of medial gutter hypertrophic soft tissue impingement. CONCLUSION: OAT harvesting from the ipsilateral talar articular facet showed satisfactory results. The mean post-operative VAS score and AOFAS ankle-hindfoot score improved significantly. Post-operative impingement around the osteotomy site was the main complication and reason for re-operation after the index procedure. In addition, bone cysts at the recipient and/or donor site(s) were found with a large percentage under CT. Therefore, longer follow-up is necessary to determine the long-term clinical results for this technique.

RESUMO

To endow the polymeric prodrug with smart properties through a safe and simple method, matrix metalloproteinase (MMPs) responsive peptide GPLGVRGDG was introduced into the block copolymer to prepare TPGS3350-GPLGVRGDG-DOX&DOX micelles, where TPGS3350 is D-α-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol 3350 succinate. During the doxorubicin delivery, the cleavage of the peptide chain triggers de-PEGylation, and the remaining VRGDG sequence was retained on the surface of the micelles, which can act as a ligand to facilitate cell uptake. Moreover, the cytotoxicity of TPGS3350-GPLGVRGDG-DOX&DOX micelles against 4T1 cells was significantly improved, compared with TPGS3350-GPLGVRG-DOX&DOX micelles and TPGS3350-DOX&DOX micelles. During in vivo studies, TPGS3350-GPLGVRGDG-DOX&DOX micelles exhibited good anticancer efficacy with long circulation in the body and more efficient accumulation at the tumor site. Therefore, TPGS3350-GPLGVRGDG-DOX&DOX micelles have improved antitumor activity and reduced toxic side effects. This work opens new potential for exploring the strategy of drug delivery in clinical applications.

RESUMO

CONTEXT: Post-sepsis cognitive impairment is one of the major sequelae observed in survivors of sepsis. Astragalus injection is the normally preferred treatment in sepsis in clinical settings. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the benefits and related mechanism of Astragalus injection on post-sepsis cognitive impairment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: C57BL/6J mice were divided into three groups: Control, LPS (2.5 mg/kg, i.p.), and LPS + Astragalus injection (5.0 mL/kg). The surviving mice from sepsis were injected with material named Astragalus injection continuously for 13 days. Behavioural tests were first conducted to evaluate the benefits. Second, inflammatory cytokines secretion, BBB integrity, neurodegeneration, and protein expression was evaluated in vivo and in vitro. RESULTS: Compared with the LPS group, mice in Astragalus injection group exhibited shorter escape latency (34.6 s versus 24.5 s) in the Morris water maze test. Treatment with Astragalus injection could reverse LPS-induced neuroinflammation in mice and BV2 cells. Continuous Astragalus injection treatment not only prevented blood-brain barrier dysfunction, but also prevented neurodegeneration. Further molecular docking tests and western blot results reflected that the main constituents of Astragalus injection could interact with TrkB (the estimated binding energy values were -7.0 to -5.0 kcal/mol) and upregulate the protein expression of BDNF/TrkB/CREB signalling pathway during the chronic stage in mice. DISCUSSION: Astragalus injection treatment could reduce neuroinflammation, reverse BBB dysfunction, prevent neurodegeneration, and upregulate BDNF-CREB pathway during LPS-induced sepsis, ultimately preventing the development of cognitive decline. CONCLUSION: Astragalus injection could be a potential preventive and therapeutic strategy for sepsis survivors in clinical settings.

RESUMO

Due to agricultural waste combustion and large-scale biochar application, biochar-derived dissolved black carbon (DBC) is largely released into surface waters. The photogeneration of reactive species (RS) from DBC plays an important role in organic pollutant degradation. However, the mechanistic interactions between RS and pollutants are poorly understood. Here, we investigated the formation of DBC triplet states (3DBC*), singlet oxygen (1O2), and hydroxyl radical (•OH) in straw biochar-derived DBC solutions and photodegradation of typical pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). Laser flash photolysis and electron spin resonance spectrometry showed that DBC exhibited higher RS quantum yields than some well-studied dissolved organic matter. The RS caused rapid degradation of atenolol, diphenhydramine, and propylparaben, selected as target PPCPs in this study. The 3DBC* contributed primarily to the oxidation of selected PPCPs via one-electron-transfer interaction, with average reaction rate constants of 1.15 × 109, 1.41 × 109, and 0.51 × 109 M-1 s-1, respectively. •OH also participated in the degradation and accounted for approximately 2.7, 2.5, and 18.0% of the total removal of atenolol, diphenhydramine, and propylparaben, respectively. Moreover, the photodegradation products were identified using high-resolution mass spectrometry, which further confirmed the electron transfer and •OH oxidation mechanisms. These findings suggest that DBC from the combustion process of agricultural biomass can efficiently induce the photodegradation of organic pollutants under sunlight in aquatic environments.

RESUMO

Chlorine is commonly used in disinfection processes in wastewater treatment plants prior to discharge of the effluents into receiving waters. Effluent organic matter and humic substances constitute up to 90% of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in receiving water, which induces photogeneration of reactive species (RS) such as excited triplet state of DOM (3DOM*), singlet oxygen (1O2), and hydroxyl radical (•OH). The RS plays an important role in the attenuation of trace pollutants. However, the effect of chlorine disinfection on the photoreactivity of the DOM has remained unclear. Here, we investigated the physicochemical properties and subsequent RS variation after chlorination of DOM. Solid-state 13C cross-polarization/magic angle-spinning NMR and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry verified that the aromaticity, electron-donating capacity (EDC), and average molecular weight of DOM decreased markedly after chlorination. It was found for the first time that the photoproduction of 3DOM*, 1O2, and •OH increased markedly after chlorination of DOM upon irradiation of simulated sunlight. The quantum yields of 3DOM*, 1O2, and •OH were positively correlated with E2/E3 (ratio of the absorbance at 254 to 365 nm) while negatively correlated with EDC before and after chlorination. These findings highlight the synergetic effect of chlorine disinfection on the photosensitization of DOM under irradiation of sunlight, which will promote the removal of trace pollutants in surface waters.

RESUMO

In the current study, on the basis of 1,3,5-tris(2-methylimidazol-1-yl)benzene (timb), a designed tripodal connector, two new transition metal coordination polymers (CPs), {[Cu4(timb)2(Br-IPA)4]·5H2O}n (1) and {[Zn(timb)0.5(NH2-IPA)]·4H2O}n (2) have been generated with the mixed ligand method by the reaction between the timb and corresponding metal salts in the existence of dissimilar functional isophthalic acid (H2IPA) ligands. Furthermore, the Zn(II)-based complex 2 displays high sensitivity in the detection of Cu(II) ion in water. The neural stem cells proliferation after treated via compounds was detected with Cell Counting Kit-8 detection assay. And the real time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction was carried out for the investigation of the differentiation function of the neural stem cells after the compound 1 treatment and compound 2 treatment. Further, molecular docking simulations confirmed that the biological activity that has been observed from experiments were from the carboxyl group on the Cu complex, in contrast, the imidazole groups were only used for binding with the Cu metal ion to retain the complex structure.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: A significant number of sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) patients had no noticeable hearing improvement after glucocorticoid (GC) treatment. In the present study, we examined expression of the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) and histone deacetylase 2 (HDAC2) in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of refractory SSNHL patients to study the role of NRF2-HDAC2 pathway in GC insensitivity hearing improvement after GC treatment, which is usually referred to as refractory SSNHL or GC insensitivity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-four refractory SSNHL patients were treated by intratympanic GC infusion. Hearing was tested in all patients before and after treatment by pure tone hearing test. NRF2/HDAC2 mRNA and protein levels were examined in PBMCs of refractory SSNHL patients before and after treatment. PBMCs from healthy volunteers were used as normal controls. RESULTS: According to the hearing improvement after treatment, patients were assigned into 2 groups: the intratympanic GC sensitive (IGCS) group (hearing recovery ≥15 dB HL) and the intratympanic GC insensitive (IGCI) group (hearing recovery <15 dB HL). Before treatment, the NRF2 mRNA level was lower in all patients than the normal control group. After treatment, NRF2 and HDAC2 mRNA and protein levels were increased in the IGCS group, while no significant change was observed in the IGCI group. CONCLUSION: Low response of NRF2/HDAC2 proteins is associated with GC insensitivity in SSNHL. We speculate that the NRF2-HDAC2 pathway affects GC sensitivity in SSNHL patients.

RESUMO

Exercise preconditioning (EP) provides protective effects for acute cardiovascular stress; however, its mechanisms need to be further investigated. Autophagy is a degradation pathway essential for myocardium health. Therefore, we investigated whether intermittent myocardial ischemia-hypoxia affected Beclin1 and whether the changes in autophagy levels contribute to EP-induced early myocardial protective effects. Rats were trained on a treadmill using an EP model (four cycles of 10 minutes of running/10 minutes of rest). Exhaustive exercise (EE) was performed to induce myocardial injury. Cardiac troponin I (cTnI) and ischemia-hypoxia staining were used to evaluate myocardial injury and protection. Double-labeled immunofluorescence staining and western blot analysis were employed to examine related markers. EP attenuated the myocardial ischemic-hypoxic injury induced by EE. Compared with the control (C) group, the dissociations of Beclin1/Bcl-2 ratio and Beclin1 expression were both higher in all other groups. Compared with the C group, PI3KC3 and the LC3-II/LC3-I ratio were higher in all other groups, whereas LC3-II was higher in the EE and EEP + EE groups. p62 was higher in the EE group than in the C group but lower in the EEP + EE group than in the EE group. We concluded that EP increases Beclin1 via intermittent myocardial ischemia-hypoxia and induces autophagy, which exerts early myocardial protective effects and reduces the myocardial ischemic-hypoxic injury induced by exhaustive exercise.

RESUMO

Fabrication of a multifunctional near-infrared (NIR) theranostic nanoplatform has attracted increasing attention. Indocyanine green (ICG), a clinic-approved NIR fluorescence-imaging agent, is an excellent photothermal agent candidate. However, the stability and tumor targeting are still great obstacles for its wide application. In this work, C-phycocyanin (CPC) as a tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) targeted vehicle was used to fabricate noncovalent ICG conjugate of CPC (ICG@CPC) via self-assembly in aqueous media. Compared to free ICG, ICG@CPC displays improved stabilities in aqueous solutions and under light irradiation and threefold increase in photothermal conversion efficiency. The in vitro results indicated that ICG@CPC could be selectively internalized into J774A.1 cells via SR-A-mediated endocytosis and lead to enhanced photocytotoxicity against J774A.1 cells. In vivo results showed that ICG@CPC had significantly improved drug accumulation in the tumor and photothermal therapeutic efficacy relative to ICG alone. This study for the first time utilizes CPC as a TAMs-targeted nanocarrier for ICG and may promote further rational design of ICG-based photothermal nanodrugs for precise and efficient cancer theranosis.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To study the protective effect of a scrotal rapid recovery dressing device, scrotal girdle, on the scrotum of the patient with acute epididymitis, so as to improve the prognosis and the patient's satisfaction. METHODS: A total of 120 patients with acute epididymitis were treated in our hospital from December 2018 to November 2019, 60 with the scrotal girdle plus local cold compress in addition to antibiotics administration (the scrotal girdle group) and the other 60 with antibiotics only (the control group), all for 6 days. Then, comparisons were made between the two groups of patients in the improvement of scrotal swelling, total effectiveness rate and the patients' satisfaction with therapeutic outcomes. RESULTS: After 6 days of treatment, the patients in the scrotal girdle group, compared with the controls, showed significantly lower scrotal swelling scores (1.01 ± 0.34 vs 1.38 ± 0.20, P < 0.05), a higher total effectiveness rate (83.33% vs 65%, P < 0.05) and higher satisfaction with the therapeutic outcomes (86.67% vs 56.67%, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: For the treatment of acute epididymitis, the application of the scrotal girdle for protection can significantly relieve scrotal pain and discomfort, improve the therapeutic effect and patients' satisfaction, and enhance the patients' recovery and quality of life.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the application of a metamorphic mechanism-based special dressing system (MMDS) in improving the prognosis and comfort of the patient after scrotal surgery. METHODS: We included 48 cases of scrotal surgery using the traditional method for postoperative dressing from June 2017 to June 2018 (the control group) and another 48 cases employing MMDS postoperatively from July 2018 to June 2019 (the MMDS group). We observed the differences between the two groups of patients in the incidence of scrotal edema, pain score, hospitalization days, patients' satisfaction, and dressing time. RESULTS: The scrotal edema score showed no statistically significant difference between the MMDS and control groups at 24 hours after operation (P > 0.05) but remarkably lower in the former than in the latter group at 48 hours (1.42 ± 0.5 vs 2.27 ± 0.7, P < 0.05) and 72 hours postoperatively (1.35 ± 0.2 vs 2.25 ± 0.7, P < 0.05). The MMDS group, compared with the controls, also exhibited a lower pain score (2.2 ± 1.0 vs 3.4 ± 1.5, P < 0.05), shorter hospitalization time (ï¼»5.96 ± 1.2ï¼½ vs ï¼»9.13 ± 2.3ï¼½ d, P < 0.05) and higher satisfaction score (98.1 ± 1.6 vs 92.8 ± 2.8, P < 0.05), as well as shorter dressing time at 24, 48 and 72 hours after operation (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The metamorphic mechanism-based special dressing system is a safe, efficient, simple and feasible method for dressing after scrotal surgery, which can effectively promote recovery and improve the quality of life of the patients.
