RESUMO

Antimony sulfide (Sb2S3), an emerging material for photovoltaic devices, has drawn growing research interest due to its inexpensive and high-throughput device production. In this study, the material and defect properties of Sb2S3 thin films prepared by the vapor transport deposition (VTD) method at different working pressures were studied. Solar cells based on a structure of glass/ITO/CdS/Sb2S3/Au were fabricated. The working pressure showed a significant effect on the device's performance. The current density versus voltage measurement and scanning electron microscopy analysis outcome were utilized to investigate the photovoltaic and microstructural properties in the samples. The compositional analysis by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy measurement confirmed the Sb/S ratio as 2:2.8 for the thin films. The identification and characterization of the defects present in Sb2S3 thin films were performed via admittance measurements. Compared to the defect density, the defect energy level was found to inherit a more important role in the device's performance. The best solar cell performance with better crystal quality, lower defect density, and longer capture lifetime was achieved under the substrate working pressure of 2 Pa. The highest efficiency was found to be 0.86% with Voc=0.55V, Jsc=5.07mA/cm2.

Antimony selenide (${\text{Sb}_2}{\text{Se}_3}$Sb2Se3) is an emerging material with potential applications in photovoltaics, while magnetron sputtering is an important method in material growth. In this study, ${\text{Sb}_2}{\text{Se}_3}$Sb2Se3 thin films, prepared by the magnetron sputtering technique with varied working pressures and sputtering powers, were fabricated into solar cells with a structure of $\text{glass}/\text{ITO}/\text{CdS}/{\text{Sb}_2}{\text{Se}_3}/\text{Au}$glass/ITO/CdS/Sb2Se3/Au. The current density versus voltage measurements and x-ray diffraction were introduced to compare the photovoltaic and structural properties of the cell samples. Characterization and identification of the defects in ${\text{Sb}_2}{\text{Se}_3}$Sb2Se3 thin films were investigated by admittance measurements. The ${\text{Sb}_2}{\text{Se}_3}$Sb2Se3 cell samples prepared with appropriate sputtering power (about 60 W) or working pressure (about 0.4 Pa) were found to own better crystal qualities and lower defect densities, which may be the reason for better efficiency.

MicroRNAs are short non-coding RNA molecules that function as critical regulators of various biological processes through negative regulation of gene expression post-transcriptionally. Recent studies have indicated that microRNAs are potential biomarkers for ischemic stroke. In this review, we first illustrate the pathogenesis of ischemic stroke and demonstrate the biogenesis and transportation of microRNAs from cells. We then discuss several promising microRNA biomarkers in ischemic stroke in a context-specific manner from three dimensions: biofluids selection for microRNA extraction (Where), the timing of sample collection after ischemic stroke onset (When), and the clinical application of the differential-expressed microRNAs during stroke pathophysiology (What). We show that microRNAs have the utilities in ischemic stroke diagnosis, risk stratification, subtype classification, prognosis prediction, and treatment response monitoring. However, there are also obstacles in microRNA biomarker research, and this review will discuss the possible ways to improve microRNA biomarkers. Overall, microRNAs have the potential to assist clinical treatment, and developing microRNA panels for clinical application is worthwhile.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized many fields, and its potential in healthcare has been increasingly recognized. Based on diverse data sources such as imaging, laboratory tests, medical records, and electrophysiological data, diagnostic AI has witnessed rapid development in recent years. A comprehensive understanding of the development status, contributing factors, and their relationships in the application of AI to medical diagnostics is essential to further promote its use in clinical practice. In this study, we conducted a bibliometric analysis to explore the evolution of task-specific to general-purpose AI for medical diagnostics. We used the Web of Science database to search for relevant articles published between 2010 and 2023, and applied VOSviewer, the R package Bibliometrix, and CiteSpace to analyze collaborative networks and keywords. Our analysis revealed that the field of AI in medical diagnostics has experienced rapid growth in recent years, with a focus on tasks such as image analysis, disease prediction, and decision support. Collaborative networks were observed among researchers and institutions, indicating a trend of global cooperation in this field. Additionally, we identified several key factors contributing to the development of AI in medical diagnostics, including data quality, algorithm design, and computational power. Challenges to progress in the field include model explainability, robustness, and equality, which will require multi-stakeholder, interdisciplinary collaboration to tackle. Our study provides a holistic understanding of the path from task-specific, mono-modal AI toward general-purpose, multimodal AI for medical diagnostics. With the continuous improvement of AI technology and the accumulation of medical data, we believe that AI will play a greater role in medical diagnostics in the future.

Microorganisms, particularly extremophiles, have evolved multiple adaptation mechanisms to address diverse stress conditions during survival in unique environments. Their responses to environmental coercion decide not only survival in severe conditions but are also an essential factor determining bioproduction performance. The design of robust cell factories should take the balance of their growing and bioproduction into account. Thus, mining and redesigning stress-tolerance elements to optimize the performance of cell factories under various extreme conditions is necessary. Here, we reviewed several stress-tolerance elements, including acid-tolerant elements, saline-alkali-resistant elements, thermotolerant elements, antioxidant elements, and so on, providing potential materials for the construction of cell factories and the development of synthetic biology. Strategies for mining and redesigning stress-tolerance elements were also discussed. Moreover, several applications of stress-tolerance elements were provided, and perspectives and discussions for potential strategies for screening stress-tolerance elements were made.

Background: Healthcare workers encountered novel job stressors during the late stage of the COVID-19 pandemic. These stressors possessed potential deleterious effects on mental health outcomes, yet the underlying mediating and moderating mechanisms remained relatively unexplored. Objective: The current study aimed to examine the role of cognitive emotion regulation as a mediator in the association between pandemic-related job stressors and the psychological symptoms of healthcare professionals in the late stage of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the role of reflective functioning as a resilience factor moderating both the associations of pandemic-related job stressors and cognitive emotion regulation, as well as psychological symptoms. Methods: This cross-sectional survey conducted in October 2020 included 2393 healthcare professionals working in departments with a high risk of exposure to COVID-19 from 22 hospitals in Beijing, China. Participants were asked to complete questionnaires measuring pandemic-related job stressors, anxiety, depression, reflective functioning, and cognitive emotion regulation strategies. Path analyses were performed to examine the hypothesized model. Results: Epidemic-related job stressors had significant direct effects on depression (ß=0.31, p<0.001) and anxiety symptoms (ß=0.29, p<0.001) and the indirect effects through mediation of maladaptive cognitive regulation were also significant (for depression, indirect effect=0.06, SE=0.01, CI=[0.04, 0.07]; for anxiety, indirect effect=0.06, SE=0.01, CI=[0.04, 0.08]). The dimension of certainty about mental states in the reflective functioning questionnaire (RFQc) moderated the direct effect of pandemic-related job stressors on depression (ß=-0.05, p<0.001) and moderated the effect of job stressors on maladaptive cognitive regulation (ß=0.06, p<0.001). Conclusion: The results shed light on the roles of cognitive emotion regulation and reflective functioning in coping with pandemic-related job stressors in frontline healthcare workers in periods of dealing with major infectious diseases. The findings have implications for developing interventions for healthcare workers in need.

BACKGROUND: Acute acalculous cholecystitis (AAC) is inflammation of the gallbladder without evidence of calculi. Although rarely reported, its etiologies include hepatitis virus infection (e.g., hepatitis A virus, HAV) and adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD). There are no reports of HAV-associated AAC in an AOSD patient. CASE SUMMARY: Here we report a rare case of HAV infection-associated AAC in a 39-year-old woman who had a history of AOSD. The patient presented with an acute abdomen and hypotension. Elevated hepatobiliary enzymes and a thickened and distended gallbladder without gallstones on ultrasonography suggested AAC, but there were no signs of anemia nor thrombocytopenia. Serological screening revealed anti-HAV IgM antibodies. Steroid treatment did not alleviate her symptoms, and she was referred for laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The resected gallbladder was hydropic without perforation, and her clinical signs gradually improved after surgery. CONCLUSION: AAC can be caused by HAV in AOSD patients. It is crucial to search for the underlying etiology for AAC, especially uncommon viral causes.

Patients with acute acalculous cholecystitis (AAC) often present with acute abdominal symptoms. However, recent clinical studies have suggested that some patients with AAC and an acute abdomen, especially when caused by viruses or rheumatic disease, may not require cholecystectomy and that conservative treatment is adequate. Whether cholecystectomy is superior to conservative treatment for patients with AAC presenting with a severe acute abdomen is still uncertain. This was a case series study of AAC-related literature published between 1960 and 2022. In total, 171 cases (104 viral infection-associated AAC and 67 rheumatic disease-associated AAC) were included. The prognoses of patients receiving cholecystectomy or conservative treatment were compared. To account for confounding factors, etiological stratification and logistic regression were performed. The prognosis was similar for patients undergoing cholecystectomy and conservative treatment (P value .364), and virus infection-associated AAC had a better prognosis than rheumatic disease-associated AAC (P value .032). In patients with AAC caused by viruses or rheumatic disease, the acute abdomen can be adequately managed by conservative treatment of the underlying etiology and does not mandate surgical intervention.

There is no common medical professionalism framework in China, mandating work to conceptualize professionalism from various perspectives. Studies on students viewpoints about medical professionalism are limited. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate how Chinese medical students perceive professionalism to provide a reference for future medical education reform and policy development. Fifty-four written reflections on medical professionalism were collected from first-year students of China 4 + 4 medical education program enrolled in 2020 to 2021 academic years. Essays were subjected to thematic analysis using NVivo 12. Three main themes emerged: inter-personal, intra-personal, and public professionalism. Students emphasized the importance of physician-patient relationships, proficiency of medical knowledge, and enthusiasm for promoting health-related issues. By contrast, teamwork and confidentiality were not considered essential aspects of professionalism. The medical professionalism framework articulated by students in China was roughly the same as in other countries. Where there were differences, these may have been due to the unique sociocultural environment. Future medical professionalism education should be adjusted according to students understanding of professionalism.

BACKGROUND: Cupping therapy is a complementary and alternative medical therapy used especially in pain management. It is generally considered a safe procedure, but complications, including life-threatening infection, may still occur. Understanding these complications is essential to safe and evidence-based use of cupping in practice. CASE PRESENTATION: Here we report a rare case of disseminated Staphylococcus aureus infection after cupping therapy. After wet cupping, a 33-year-old immunocompetent woman developed fever, myalgia, and a productive cough accompanied by acute liver and kidney injury, iliopsoas abscess, and gastrointestinal bleeding. The patient was treated successfully with cefmetazole plus levofloxacin after microbiological and antimicrobial sensitivity testing. CONCLUSIONS: Though rarely reported, clinicians, practitioners of cupping therapy, and patients should be aware of the risk of infection after cupping therapy. High hygiene standards are recommended for cupping therapy, even in immunocompetent individuals.

Over the past decade, cancer incidence has increased globally while its mortality has decreased. Accordingly, healthcare practitioners aim to provide comprehensive care to cancer patients. The biopsychosocial model suggests medical professionals' understanding of how psychosocial factors influence the entire course of cancer is critical. However, until now, an integrative review summarising the full scope of these psychosocial domains has been lacking. This review substantiates that cancer patients, survivors, their caregivers, and oncology professionals face substantial psychosocial challenges. Cancer patients and survivors may experience deterioration of self-concept, disturbance of body image, sexual problems and difficulties in social relationships while attempting to cope with casual issues. The burdens of care provision and the impact on the health of caregivers of cancer patients are also noteworthy. Improving the quality of patient-doctor communication and overcoming burnout are significant challenges for oncology healthcare professionals.

BACKGROUND: Although extraintestinal manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are well documented, myocarditis has only rarely been reported as an extraintestinal manifestation, and it can be fatal. The various clinical presentations and causes of myocarditis in IBD patients complicate making a correct and timely diagnosis. CASE SUMMARY: Here we report a 15-year-old boy who presented with myocarditis as the initial presentation of a relapse of ulcerative colitis. In reviewing the literature for cases of myocarditis complicating IBD, we found 21 other cases, allowing us to expand our understanding of the clinical presentation, diagnosis, management, and outcomes of this rare condition. The most frequent diagnostic clues for myocarditis in IBD patients are dyspnea, chest pain, tachycardia, raised cardiac biomarkers, and abnormalities on trans-thoracic echocardiography. Additionally, we discuss the etiology of myocarditis in IBD patients, which include an extraintestinal manifestation, the adverse effects of mesalamine and infliximab, selenium deficiency, and infection, to help provide a framework for diagnosis and management. CONCLUSION: Myocarditis as an extraintestinal manifestation of IBD can be life-threatening. Trans-thoracic echocardiogram and cardiac magnetic resonance may assist its diagnosis.
