RESUMO

The "shuttle effect" and slow redox reactions of Li-S batteries limit their practical application. To solve these problems, a judicious catalyst design for improved battery cycle life and rate performance is essential. Herein, this issue is addressed by modifying the Li-S battery separator using a 2D Fe2 O3 -CoP heterostructure that combines the dual functions of polar Fe2 O3 and high-conductivity CoP. The synthesized ultrathin nanostructure exposes well-dispersed active sites and shortens the ion diffusion paths. Theoretical calculations, electrochemical tests, and in situ Raman spectroscopy measurements reveal that the heterostructure facilitates the inhibition of polysulfide shuttling and enhances the electrode kinetics. A sulfur cathode constructed using the Fe2 O3 -CoP-based separator provides an astonishing capacity of 1346 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C and a high capacity retention of ≈84.5%. Even at a high sulfur loading of 5.42 mg cm-2 , it shows an area capacity of 5.90 mAh cm-2 . This study provides useful insights into the design of new catalytic materials for Li-S batteries.

RESUMO

High-entropy alloy (HEA) nanoparticles have attracted great attention due to their excellent electrocatalytic properties. Herein, PtCuNiCoMn HEA nanoparticles supported on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) are synthesized via a solvothermal co-reduction method and are used as an electrocatalyst for the electrooxidation of methanol and formic acid. Owing to the synergistic effect between the component metals, the high-entropy effect, and the sluggish diffusion effect, the PtCuNiCoMn HEA nanoparticles possess significantly improved electrocatalytic activity and stability compared to PtCuNiCo, PtCuNi, PtCu, Pt nanoparticles, and the commercial Pt/C catalyst. The results reveal the unique advantages of HEA nanoparticles in the field of electrocatalysis. The synthesis method is simple and effective, which may be valuable for the preparation of other HEA electrocatalysts.

RESUMO

Low-power electronic devices play a pivotal role in the burgeoning artificial intelligence era. The study of such devices encompasses low-subthreshold swing (SS) transistors and neuromorphic devices. However, conventional field-effect transistors (FETs) face the inherent limitation of the "Boltzmann tyranny", which restricts SS to 60 mV decade-1 at room temperature. Additionally, FET-based neuromorphic devices lack sufficient conductance states for highly accurate neuromorphic computing due to a narrow memory window. In this study, we propose a pioneering PZT-enabled MoS2 floating gate transistor (PFGT) configuration, demonstrating a low SS of 46 mV decade-1 and a wide memory window of 7.2 V in the dual-sweeping gate voltage range from -7 to 7 V. The wide memory window provides 112 distinct conductance states for PFGT. Moreover, the PFGT-based artificial neural network achieves an outstanding facial-recognition accuracy of 97.3%. This study lays the groundwork for the development of low-SS transistors and highly energy efficient artificial synapses utilizing two-dimensional materials.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Brown macroalgae dominate temperate coastal ecosystems, and their productivity is typically limited by nitrate availability. As an economically important kelp, Saccharina japonica is the most productive farmed seaweed and needs to be supplemented with sufficient nitrate throughout the cultivation process. However, molecular characterization of genes involved in nitrogen assimilation has not been conducted in brown macroalgae. RESULTS: Here, we described the identification of the nitrate reductase (NR) gene from S. japonica (SjNR). Using two different cloning methods for SjNR, i.e. rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) and cDNA cloning alone, a single fragment was obtained respectively. According to results of sequence analysis between these two fragments, the tentative coding sequence in two clones, SjNR-L and SjNR-S, were suggested to represent two transcripts of the single copy SjNR, and the ATG of SjNR-S was located inside the third exon of SjNR-L. In the 5' upstream sequence of each transcript, promoter core elements, response elements, especially multiple N response elements which occurred in microalgal NR, were all predicted. Further sequence analysis revealed that both transcripts encoded all five domains conserved in eukaryotic plant NRs. RT-qPCR results showed that the transcription level of SjNR in juvenile sporophytes could be significantly induced by nitrate and inhibited by ammonium, which was in line with plant NRs. The recombinant SjNR-L and SjNR-S were all proved to have NR activity, suggesting that the single-copy gene SjNR might be regulated on transcription level based on alternative promoters and multiple transcriptional start sites. Moreover, both NADH and NADPH were found to be able to act as electron donors for SjNR alone, which is the first confirmation that brown algal NR has a NAD(P)H-bispecific form. CONCLUSION: These results will provide a scientific basis for understanding the N demand of kelp in various stages of cultivation and evaluating the environmental remediation potential of kelp in eutrophic sea areas.

RESUMO

The inhibition of lithium polysulfide (LiPS) diffusion and the acceleration of reaction kinetics are two major challenges for the practical application of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Herein, through an interface engineering strategy, a multifunctional sulfur host based on Ru nanocluster-modified TiO2 nanotubes (TiO2-Ru) was designed. The TiO2-Ru interface field effect, combined with the hollow nanotube structure and the strong chemical action of TiO2, enhanced the LiPS trapping ability and inhibited the "shuttle effect". Furthermore, the high catalytic activity of Ru nanoclusters reduced the energy barrier of multistep LiPS reactions, thus speeding up the electrode kinetics. As a result, the TiO2-Ru-based composite sulfur cathode delivered excellent electrochemical performance, including an extremely low capacity loss of ∼0.015% per cycle and an increased areal capacity of ∼6.1 mAh cm-2 at 4.8 mg cm-2. This work contributes to a better sulfur cathode design from insights into morphology and phase interface engineering.

RESUMO

The effects of magnesium ion implantation and post-annealing on the photoelectric performance of a ß-G a 2 O 3-based vertical structural Schottky photodetector (PD) were thoroughly investigated. After implantation and post-annealing, the Schottky barrier height and bandgap of the G a 2 O 3 surface can be slightly increased, while the dark current is significantly reduced, and the light-to-dark current ratio is immensely improved. The PD exhibited a photo-to-dark current ratio of 1733, responsivity of 5.04 mA/W, and specific detectivity of 3.979×1011 Jones under -2.6V bias, and the rise and decay times are 0.157 were 0.048 s, respectively. The large left shift of the open-circuit voltage is feasibly explained by applying the thermionic-emission diffusion theory.

RESUMO

To improve the chemical regulation on the activity of cyclic dinucleotides (CDNs), we here designed a reduction-responsive dithioethanol (DTE)-based dCDN prodrug 9 (DTE-dCDN). Prodrug 9 improved the cell permeability with the intracellular levels peaking in 2 h in THP-1 cells. Under the reductive substance such as GSH or DTT, prodrug 9 could be quickly decomposed in 30 min to release the parent dCDN. In THP1-Lucia cells, prodrug 9 also retained a high bioactivity with the EC50 of 0.96 µM, which was 51-, 43-, and 3-fold more than the 2',3'-cGAMP (EC50 = 48.6 µM), the parent compound 3',3'-c-di-dAMP (EC50 = 41.3 µM), and ADU-S100 (EC50 = 2.9 µM). The high bioactivity of prodrug 9 was validated to be highly correlated with the activation of the STING signaling pathway. Furthermore, prodrug 9 could also improve the transcriptional expression levels of IFN-ß, CXCL10, IL-6, and TNF-α in THP-1 cells. These results will be helpful to the development of chemically controllable CDN prodrugs with a high cellular permeability and potency.

RESUMO

As a therapeutic tool inherited for thousands of years, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) exhibits superiority in tumor therapy. The antitumor active components of TCM not only have multi-target treatment modes but can also synergistically interfere with tumor growth compared to traditional chemotherapeutics. However, most antitumor active components of TCM have the characteristics of poor solubility, high toxicity, and side effects, which are often limited in clinical application. In recent years, delivering the antitumor active components of TCM by nanosystems has been a promising field. The advantages of nano-delivery systems include improved water solubility, targeting efficiency, enhanced stability in vivo, and controlled release drugs, which can achieve higher drug-delivery efficiency and bioavailability. According to the method of drug loading on nanocarriers, nano-delivery systems can be categorized into two types, including physically encapsulated nanoplatforms and chemically coupled drug-delivery platforms. In this review, two nano-delivery approaches are considered, namely physical encapsulation and chemical coupling, both commonly used to deliver antitumor active components of TCM, and we summarized the advantages and limitations of different types of nano-delivery systems. Meanwhile, the clinical applications and potential toxicity of nano-delivery systems and the future development and challenges of these nano-delivery systems are also discussed, aiming to lay the foundation for the development and practical application of nano-delivery systems of TCM in clinical settings.

RESUMO

The 2017 ban on the waste import and new policies for the waste management sector in mainland China had wide-spread impact. After decades of poor environmental and public health impacts from the sector, a study is needed which focuses on policies updates and waste management. This provides a direction for the survival of local waste management industries and consider similarities with the ban promulgated in China on the restriction of waste import from other countries. We review the waste management situation in China before national legislation prevented the import of waste, highlight the status of landfill mining in China, and review the dynamics of domestic policies before and after the promulgation of the ban in China. The impact of the COVID19 pandemic on the waste management system is starting to emerge, providing both challenges and opportunities for the sector in China. We see the impact of the ban on the range of imported waste and domestically generated materials. The ban results in price increases for domestic recycling that forces companies to introduce more formal recycling processes and to drive the consumption behaviours to more reasonable and environmentally friendly options. The driver in China is to reduce pollution in the environment and improve health, but a negative impact has been from increased landfill mining which has impeded the original aim of the waste ban and requires further technological development. The dynamic of domestic policies in China shows higher level of activity of updates and revisions or introduction of new policies from 2015 onwards and the concept of 'zero waste cities' brings new hope for improvement of the Chinese waste management system. The pandemic also suggests an important step to establish sustainable management systems despite evidence of increased "fly-tipping". The rebound of the waste ban may have stimulated in the short term negative impacts on local environments both in China and internationally.

RESUMO

Cyclic dinucleotides (CDNs) could activate stimulator of interferon genes (STING) protein to produce type I interferon and other pro-inflammation cytokines in mammalian cells. To explore new types of potentially efficient STING activators targeting all five major hSTING variants (WT, R232H, HAQ, AQ and R293Q), we here reported the synthesis of a total of 19 inosine-containing CDNs based on the combinations of hypoxanthine with four natural bases (A, G, C and U) and three phosphodiester linkage backbones (3'-3', 2'-3', 2'-2'). The IFN-ß induction results showed that all of the 2'-3' and 2'-2' CDNs linked by inosine and purine nucleosides favored the stacking interaction with Y167 and R238 residues of hSTING protein, and several CDNs constructed by hypoxanthine and pyrimidine like c[I(2',5')U(2',5')] could also activate all five hSTING variants. The molecular dynamic simulation and the isothermal titration calorimetric (ITC) assay further demonstrated the potential of cAIMP isomers with 2'-5' phosphate to form the hydrogen binding with R232 and R238 residues of hSTING in an entropically driven manner compared to cGAMP isomers. It would be promising to exploit novel inosine-mixed CDNs as activators of hSTING variants in immune therapy.

RESUMO

To evaluate the potential of sepiolite-based materials to resolve environmental pollution problems, a study is needed which looks at the whole life cycle of material application, including the residual value of material classified as waste from the exploitation of sepiolite deposits in the region or from its processing and purification. This would also maximize value from the exploitation process and provide new potential for local waste management. We review the geographical distribution of sepiolite, its application in the treatment of potentially toxic elements in soil and across the wider landscape, an assessment of modification and compositional variation of sepiolite-based applications within site remediation and wastewater treatment. The potential of sepiolite-based technologies is widespread and a number of processes utilize sepiolite-derived materials. Along with its intrinsic characteristics, both the long-term durability and the cost-effectiveness of the application need to be considered, making it possible to design ready-to-use products with good market acceptance. From a critical analysis of the literature, the most frequently associated terms associated with sepiolite powder are the use of lime and bentonite, while fly ash ranked in the top ten of the most frequently used material with sepiolite. These add improved performance for the inclusion as a soil or wastewater treatment options, alone or applied in combination with other treatment methods. This approach needs an integrated assessment to establish economic viability and environmental performance. Applications are not commonly evaluated from a cost-benefit perspective, in particular in relation to case studies within geographical regions hosting primary sepiolite deposits and wastes that have the potential for beneficial reuse.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Common carotid artery occlusive disease (CCAOD) could form internal carotid artery steal pathways. Based on the diagnostic results of digital subtraction angiography (DSA), head and neck computed tomography angiography (CTA) was used to find the internal carotid artery stealing pathway after CCAOD. METHODS: The clinical and imaging data of 18 patients with CCAOD were retrospectively analyzed. DSA and CTA was used to evaluate internal carotid artery steal pathways. RESULTS: Of the 18 patients with CCAOD, 10 patients found internal carotid artery steal pathways. There were 7 males and 3 females. Vascular ultrasound examination of all patients: The affected side had no blood flow in common carotid artery (CCA), and had retrograde blood flow in the external carotid artery (ECA). The blood flow of the affected side was decreased in the internal carotid artery (ICA), but it was antegrade. DSA diagnosed 10 cases of CCA occlusion and CTA diagnosed 10 cases of CCA occlusion. DSA and CTA found 6 internal carotid artery blood stealing pathways: ① Vertebral artery → occipital artery → external carotid artery → internal carotid artery (6 cases); ② Thyrocervical trunk → ascending cervical artery → occipital artery → external carotid artery → internal carotid artery (7 cases); ③ Costocervical trunk → deep cervical artery → occipital artery → external carotid artery → internal carotid artery (6 cases); ④ Affected side thyroid neck trunk → inferior thyroid artery → superior thyroid artery → external carotid artery → internal carotid artery (2 cases); ⑤ Contralateral external carotid artery → contralateral superior thyroid artery → affected superior thyroid artery → external carotid artery → neck Internal artery (2 cases); ⑥ Parathyroid neck → superficial cervical artery → occipital artery → external carotid artery → internal carotid artery (1 case). CONCLUSIONS: The patients with CCAOD can find the internal carotid artery blood stealing pathway through CTA.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To determine the safety and efficacy of different doses of tolvaptan for treating Chinese cirrhotic patients with or without hyponatraemia who still had ascites after routine therapy with diuretics. METHODS: In the present placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blinded, multicentre clinical trial, patients with cirrhotic ascites who failed to adequately respond to a combination of an aldosterone antagonist plus an orally administered loop diuretic were randomly placed at a 4:2:1 ratio into 3 groups [the 15 mg/day tolvaptan group (N = 301), 7.5 mg/day tolvaptan group (N = 153) and placebo group (N = 76)] for 7 days of treatment. The effects and safety were evaluated on days 4 and 7. A change in body weight from baseline on day 7 of treatment was the primary endpoint. RESULTS: The administration of 7.5 or 15 mg/day tolvaptan significantly decreased body weight from baseline on day 7 of treatment compared to that with placebo treatment (P = 0.026; P = 0.001). For the secondary endpoints, changes in abdominal circumference from baseline and improvements in ascites were markedly different in the treatment groups and the placebo group on day 7 (P7.5 = 0.05, P15.0 = 0.002 and P7.5 = 0.037, P15.0 = 0.003), but there was no difference between the 7.5 mg/day and 15 mg/day dosage groups. The 24-h cumulative urine volume was higher in the 7.5 mg/day and 15 mg/day tolvaptan groups than the placebo group (P = 0.002, P < 0.001) and was greater in the 15 mg/day tolvaptan group than the 7.5 mg/day tolvaptan group (P = 0.004). Sodium serum concentrations were higher in patients with hyponatraemia after tolvaptan treatment, with no significant difference between the two dosage groups. The incidence of serious adverse drug reactions was not different between the groups (P = 0.543). CONCLUSIONS: Tolvaptan treatment at 7.5 mg per day might be a good therapeutic choice for Chinese cirrhotic patients with ascites who did not achieve satisfactory clinical responses to previous treatment regimens with combination therapy with an aldosterone antagonist and an orally administered loop diuretic. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To analyze the incidence of early acute kidney injury (AKI) and perioperative factors following hip and knee joint replacement. METHODS: A total of 6281 patients from the department of orthopedics from January 2016 to July 2018 were enrolled, and 1490 patients undergoing hip and knee arthroplasty met the inclusion criteria. The preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative parameters were recorded. The retrospective cohort study was carried out to analyze predictors for AKI and postoperative creatinine elevation following hip and knee joint replacement. RESULTS: Eighty patients (5.4%) met AKI criteria. Age, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status and preoperative diabetes were identified as independent predictors for postoperative AKI in patients undergoing hip and knee arthroplasty (p < 0.05). Age, male, preoperative diabetes, hypertension, and preoperative creatinine were identified as independent predictors for postoperative creatinine elevation (p < 0.05). Patients with AKI were more likely to enter the ICU than non-AKI patients (25% vs 5.6%, p < 0.05). Compared with non-AKI patients, the total hospital stay (16 [11-22] vs 13 [10-16] days) and postoperative hospital stay (11 [8-14] vs 8 [7-11] days) for AKI patients were significantly prolonged (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The study shows age, male, preoperative diabetes, hypertension, and preoperative creatinine were independent predictors for postoperative creatinine elevation. In addition, age, ASA physical status and preoperative diabetes are independent predictors for postoperative AKI in patients undergoing hip and knee joint replacement. Postoperative AKI seems to increase ICU admission and significantly prolonged hospital stay.

RESUMO

In this work, PtFeCu concave octahedron nanocrystals were synthesized by a one-pot solvothermal method. The PtFeCu concave octahedron nanocrystals were applied as an electrocatalyst for the electrooxidation of methanol and have shown high electrocatalytic activity and long-term durability. The electrocatalysis performances of the PtFeCu concave octahedron nanocrystals are better than those of the PtFe and PtCu nanocrystals and commercial Pt/C. The synergistic effect of the Pt, Fe, and Cu metals and the unique concave octahedron morphology may be the main cause of the superior electrocatalytic performances of the PtFeCu nanocrystals. The PtFeCu concave octahedron nanocrystals have a potential application as an anode catalyst for direct methanol fuel cells.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is the most common reason for a drug to be withdrawn from the market. Apart from stopping the offending drug, no regimens are available for treating idiosyncratic DILI in clinical practice. METHODS: We carried out a randomized, double-blind, multidoses, active drug controlled, multicentre phase II trial to assess the safety and efficacy of the study drug, magnesium isoglycyrrhizinate (MgIG), as compared to tiopronin, a standard therapy for DILI in China. The primary outcome was the proportion of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) normalization at week 4 after study drug administration. Logistic regression was used to examine the odds of ALT normalization between low dose (Group A) and high dose (Group B) vs active control (Group C). RESULTS: One hundred and seventy-four eligible subjects were randomized and enrolled into three groups: 59 in group A, 56 in group B and 59 in group C. It was shown that group A and group B lowered ALT level even at early stage of study drug administration; when compared with Group C (61.02%), the proportions of ALT normalization at week 4 were significantly greater in Group A (84.75%, P = .0029) and Group B (85.71%, P = .0037) respectively. The results from the univariate logistic model showed that the odds of ALT normalized among subjects in Group A were about 3.6 times greater (OR = 3.55, 95% CI: 1.47-8.57, P = .0049) than subjects in Group C. Similar effect was observed among subjects in Group B (OR = 3.83, 95% CI: 1.54-9.55, P = .0039). CONCLUSIONS: This trial provided preliminary evidence that MgIG is an effective and safe treatment for patients with acute DILI.

RESUMO

This article studies a general type of initiating events in critical infrastructures, called spatially localized failures (SLFs), which are defined as the failure of a set of infrastructure components distributed in a spatially localized area due to damage sustained, while other components outside the area do not directly fail. These failures can be regarded as a special type of intentional attack, such as bomb or explosive assault, or a generalized modeling of the impact of localized natural hazards on large-scale systems. This article introduces three SLFs models: node centered SLFs, district-based SLFs, and circle-shaped SLFs, and proposes a SLFs-induced vulnerability analysis method from three aspects: identification of critical locations, comparisons of infrastructure vulnerability to random failures, topologically localized failures and SLFs, and quantification of infrastructure information value. The proposed SLFs-induced vulnerability analysis method is finally applied to the Chinese railway system and can be also easily adapted to analyze other critical infrastructures for valuable protection suggestions.

RESUMO

This study aimed to investigate the epidemiological features of HIV-infected subjects co-infected with HBV/HCV in Fujian Province, southeastern China, and identify the risk factors. Blood samples were collected from 2,028 HIV antibody-positive subjects in Fujian Province. Serum HBsAg and anti-HCV antibody were detected, and CD4+ T cell count was measured. Of the 2,028 subjects, the prevalence of HIV-HBV, HIV-HCV, and HIV-HBV-HCV co-infections was 16.22%, 3.7%, and 0.79%, respectively. Man (OR = 1.912, 95% CI: 1.371-2.667), key population (OR = 0.756, 95% CI: 0.57-0.976) and detainee (OR = 0.486, 95% CI: 0.259-0.909) were risk factors of HIV-HBV co-infection, and man (OR = 2.227, 95% CI: 1.096-4.525), minority (OR = 5.04, 95% CI: 1.696-14.98), junior high school or lower education (OR = 2.32, 95% CI: 1.071-5.025), intravenous drug use (OR = 38.46, 95% CI: 11.46-129.11) and detainee (OR = 5.687, 95% CI: 2.44-13.25) were risk factors of HIV-HCV co-infection. In addition, a lower mean CD4+ T cell count was measured in HIV/HBV and HIV/HCV co-infected subjects than in HIV-infected subjects among the untreated individuals, while in the treated populations, a higher mean CD4+ T cell count was detected in HIV/HBV and HIV/HCV co-infected subjects than in HIV-infected subjects. HIV co-infection with HBV or HCV, notably HIV-HBV co-infection, is widespread in southeastern China. Hepatitis virus screening should be included in monitoring of HIV infection, and HIV and hepatitis virus co-infection should be considered during the development of HIV antiretroviral therapy scheme. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Piglet splay leg syndrome (PSL) is one of the most frequent genetic defects, and can cause considerable economic loss in pig production. The present understanding of etiology and pathogenesis of PSL is poor. The current study focused on identifying loci associated with PSL through a genome-wide association study (GWAS) performed with the Illumina Porcine60 SNP Beadchip v2.0. The study was a case/control design with four pig populations (Duroc, Landrace, Yorkshire and one crossbred of Landrace × Yorkshire). RESULT: After quality control of the genotyping data, 185 animals (73 cases, 112 controls) and 43,495 SNPs were retained for further analysis. Principal components (PCs) identified from the genomic kinship matrix were included in the statistical model for correcting the effect of population structure. Seven chromosome-wide significant SNPs were identified on Sus scrofa chromosome 1 (SSC1), SSC2 (2 SNPs), SSC7, SSC15 (2 SNPs) and SSC16 after strict Bonferroni correction. Four genes (HOMER1 and JMY on SSC2, ITGA1 on SSC16, and RAB32 on SSC1) related to muscle development, glycogen metabolism and mitochondrial dynamics were identified as potential candidate genes for PSL. CONCLUSIONS: We identified seven chromosome-wide significant SNPs associated with PSL and four potential candidate genes for PSL. To our knowledge, this is the first pilot study aiming to identify the loci associated with PSL using GWAS. Further investigations and validations for those findings are encouraged.

RESUMO

Ag-Pt bimetallic hollow nanospheres have been prepared through a one-pot, wet-chemical route. The formation of the hollow nanostructure can be explained by a self-template mechanism in which initially formed silver nanoparticles serve as the template. The Ag-Pt hollow nanospheres with an Ag/Pt ratio of 0.89:1 show the best electrochemical catalytic performances in the methanol oxidation reaction. Furthermore, the catalytic activity of the Ag-Pt hollow nanospheres is also much better than that of commercial Pt/C catalyst. The superior electrochemical performance of the Ag-Pt hollow nanospheres can be ascribed to the hollow nanostructure and the synergistic effect of Ag and Pt.
