BACKGROUND: Clinical nurses are susceptible to compassion fatigue when exposed to various types of traumatic events in patients for extended periods of time. However, the developmental process, staging, and psychological responses distinct to each stage of compassion fatigue in nurses are not fully clarified. This study aimed to explore the processes of compassion fatigue and the psychological experiences specific to each phase of compassion fatigue among clinical nurses. METHODS: Charmaz's Constructivist Grounded Theory methodology was used in this qualitative research. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 clinical nurses with varying degrees of compassion fatigue from December 2020 to January 2021. Interview data were analyzed using grounded theory processes. RESULTS: The data were categorized into five separate categories and 22 sub-categories. This study found that the process of compassion fatigue is dynamic and cumulative, which was classified into five phases: compassion experience period, compassion decrement period, compassion discomfort period, compassion distress period, and compassion fatigue period. CONCLUSION: Clinical nurses who experience compassion fatigue may go through five stages that are stage-specific and predictable. The findings can shed light on local and global applications to better understand the problem of nurses' compassion fatigue. The interventions for addressing compassion fatigue in clinical nurses should be stage-specific, targeted, and individualized.

OBJECTIVES: The interaction between elderly people with disabilities and their caregivers and the improvement of caregiver burden is important for elderly people with disabilities and their caregivers. This study aims to explore the multiple mediating roles of caregiver's caring ability and resilience in depression in the elderly people with disabilities on caregiver burden. METHODS: A total of 246 elderly people with disabilities at home and their family caregivers from 5 regions were investigated by questionnaires, including the General Information Questionnaire, the Patient Health Questionnaire, the Family Caregiver Task Inventory, the Resilience Scale, and the Caregiver Burden Interview. A multiple mediation model was constructed and tested. RESULTS: Univariate analysis showed that the caregiver burden of disabled elderly men is higher than that of women; the lower the level of self-care of disabled elderly individuals, the greater the burden on their caregivers (both P<0.05). Correlation analysis showed that depression of the disabled elderly people was positively correlated with the caregiver burden (P<0.01). Caregiver's caring ability was positively correlated with caregiver's resilience (P<0.01), and both were negatively correlated with caregiver burden (both P<0.01). The multiple mediating effects of caregiver caring capacity and resilience between depression of the disabled elderly people and caregiver burden were significant, with the mediating effects of caregiver caring capacity and resilience accounting for 68.9% and 26.2% of the total effect, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Depression in the elderly people with disabilities can indirectly affect caregiver burden through the caregiver's caring ability and resilience. Families of older people with disabilities need to focus on both the elderly and their caregivers. It is possible to reduce the caregiver burden and improve the physical and mental health of the dyads by empowering the caregiver's caring ability and resilience.

This integrative review aims to explore the current state of dyadic interventions in older people with chronic diseases and to review how these interventions are developed and conducted. 'Older people' and 'dyadic intervention' were searched in six databases to include studies published before August 2021. The constant comparison method was used for data synthesis, combined with the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI)1 and mixed methods appraisal tool (MMAT)2 to assess the quality of the literature. Nineteen studies were included and could be divided into four types in which caregivers could be seen as subordinators, directors, cooperators and collaborators. Dyadic interaction could be observed in all studies, including dyad coled, patient-led, and caregiver-led interactions. The outcome indicators included patient-, caregiver-, dyad-, and family-related indicators. It is important not only to include the dyad but also to consider the dyadic interactions. In the future, dyadic intervention can be guided by matching dyadic theories. NO PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: This study is an integrative review; the study population was not directly contacted. Data from included studies were analysed and interpreted.

OBJECTIVE: An experiment was conducted to study the association between the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 5'-untranslated regions (5'-UTR) of equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) genes and the serum eCG levels. METHODS: SNPs in 5'-UTR of eCG genes were screened across 10 horse breeds, including 7 Chinese indigenous breeds and 3 imported breeds using iPLEX chemistry, and the association between the serum eCG levels of 174 pregnant Da'an mares and their serum eCG levels (determined with ELISA) was analyzed. RESULTS: Four SNPs were identified in the 5'-UTR of the eCGα gene, and one of them was unique in the indigenous breeds. There were 2 SNPs detected at the 5' end of the eCGß subunit gene, and one of them was only found in the Chinese breeds. The SNP g.39948246T>C at the 5'-UTR of eCGα was associated significantly with eCG levels of 75-day pregnant mare serum (p<0.05) in Da'an mares. Prediction analysis on binding sites of transcription factors showed that the g.39948246T>C mutation causes appearance of the specific binding site of hepatocyte nuclear factor 3 forkhead homolog 2 (HFH-2), which is a transcriptional repressor belonging to the forkhead protein family of transcription factors. CONCLUSION: The SNP g.39948246T>C at the 5'-UTR of eCGα is associated with eCG levels of 75-day pregnant mare serum (p<0.05).

To investigate the genetic diversity of Chinese indigenous horses and determine the genetic status of extant horse breeds, novel Y chromosomal microsatellite markers and known Y chromosomal SNPs and mtDNA loop sequences, were employed to study the genetic diversity levels of 13 Chinese indigenous horse populations and four introduced breeds. Sixteen Y-chromosomal microsatellite markers, including seven newly identified loci, were used in the genotyping. The results showed that 4 out of the 16 loci were highly polymorphic in Chinese indigenous horse populations, in which the polymorphisms of 3 loci, ECAYP12, ECAYP13, and ECAYCAU3, were first reported in the present study. The polymorphic Y chromosomal microsatellite markers result in 19 haplotypes in the studied horses and formed 24 paternal lines when merged with the 14 Y chromosomal SNPs reported previously. The haplotypes CHT18 and SS24 harboring AMELY gene mutation were the ancestral haplotypes, and other haplotypes were derived from them by one or more mutation steps. The horse populations in mountainous and remote areas of southwestern China have the most ancient paternal lines, which suggests that ancient paternal lines preserved in local populations attributed to less human interventions. Our results also showed that the northern local breeds had higher mtDNA diversity than the southern ones in China. The frequency of haplogroup B, F, and G of mtDNA in Chinese indigenous horses has declined in recent years, and some breeds are in endangered status mainly due to small population sizes. Urgent actions should be taken to conserve the genetic diversity of the indigenous horse populations, especially the rare paternal lines. Our findings help to elucidate the genetic diversity and evolutionary history of Chinese domestic horses, which will facilitate the conservation of the indigenous horses in the future.

RESUMO

This paper proposes a UAV platform that autonomously detects, hunts, and takes down other small UAVs in GPS-denied environments. The platform detects, tracks, and follows another drone within its sensor range using a pre-trained machine learning model. We collect and generate a 58,647-image dataset and use it to train a Tiny YOLO detection algorithm. This algorithm combined with a simple visual-servoing approach was validated on a physical platform. Our platform was able to successfully track and follow a target drone at an estimated speed of 1.5 m/s. Performance was limited by the detection algorithm's 77% accuracy in cluttered environments and the frame rate of eight frames per second along with the field of view of the camera.
