RESUMO

Cassava common mosaic virus (CsCMV, genus Potexvirus) is a prevalent virus associated with cassava mosaic disease, so it is essential to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms of the coevolutionary arms race between viral pathogenesis and the cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) defense response. However, the molecular mechanism underlying CsCMV infection is largely unclear. Here, we revealed that coat protein (CP) acts as a major pathogenicity determinant of CsCMV via a mutant infectious clone. Moreover, we identified the target proteins of CP-related to abscisic acid insensitive3 (ABI3)/viviparous1 (VP1) (MeRAV1) and MeRAV2 transcription factors, which positively regulated disease resistance against CsCMV via transcriptional activation of melatonin biosynthetic genes (tryptophan decarboxylase 2 (MeTDC2), tryptamine 5-hydroxylase (MeT5H), N-aceylserotonin O-methyltransferase 1 (MeASMT1)) and MeCatalase6 (MeCAT6) and MeCAT7. Notably, the interaction between CP, MeRAV1, and MeRAV2 interfered with the protein phosphorylation of MeRAV1 and MeRAV2 individually at Ser45 and Ser44 by the protein kinase, thereby weakening the transcriptional activation activity of MeRAV1 and MeRAV2 on melatonin biosynthetic genes, MeCAT6 and MeCAT7 dependent on the protein phosphorylation of MeRAV1 and MeRAV2. Taken together, the identification of the CP-MeRAV1 and CP-MeRAV2 interaction module not only illustrates a molecular mechanism by which CsCMV orchestrates the host defense system to benefit its infection and development but also provides a gene network with potential value for the genetic improvement of cassava disease resistance.

Fiber side-pump couplers can enhance the output power of fiber laser due to their dependable and efficient operation and impressive power handling capability. We developed a tellurite fiber side-pump coupler by twisting and fusing a tapered pump fiber onto a target fiber. The effect of twisting parameters on coupling efficiency was comprehensively investigated through theoretical simulations and experiments. Experimental results exhibited an impressive coupling efficiency of 76.5% and a root mean square stability of 0.086% and 0.091% before and after one month, respectively, driven by an incident pump power of up to 4.2 W.

KEY MESSAGE: We developed an array of Zea-Tripsacum tri-hybrid allopolyploids with multiple ploidies. We unveiled that changes in genome dosage due to the chromosomes pyramiding and shuffling of three species effects karyotypic heterogeneity, reproductive diversity, and phenotypic variation in Zea-Tripsacum allopolyploids. Polyploidy, or whole genome duplication, has played a major role in evolution and speciation. The genomic consequences of polyploidy have been extensively studied in many plants; however, the extent of chromosomal variation, genome dosage, phenotypic diversity, and heterosis in allopolyploids derived from multiple species remains largely unknown. To address this question, we synthesized an allohexaploid involving Zea mays, Tripsacum dactyloides, and Z. perennis by chromosomal pyramiding. Subsequently, an allooctoploid and an allopentaploid were obtained by hybridization of the allohexaploid with Z. perennis. Moreover, we constructed three populations with different ploidy by chromosomal shuffling (allopentaploid × Z. perennis, allohexaploid × Z. perennis, and allooctoploid × Z. perennis). We have observed 3 types of sexual reproductive modes and 2 types of asexual reproduction modes in the tri-species hybrids, including 2n gamete fusion (2n + n), haploid gamete fusion (n + n), polyspermy fertilization (n + n + n) or 2n gamete fusion (n + 2n), haploid gametophyte apomixis, and asexual reproduction. The tri-hybrids library presents extremely rich karyotype heterogeneity. Chromosomal compensation appears to exist between maize and Z. perennis. A rise in the ploidy of the trihybrids was linked to a higher frequency of chromosomal translocation. Variation in the degree of phenotypic diversity observed in different segregating populations suggested that genome dosage effects phenotypic manifestation. These findings not only broaden our understanding of the mechanisms of polyploid formation and reproductive diversity but also provide a novel insight into genome pyramiding and shuffling driven genome dosage effects and phenotypic diversity.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the relationship between obesity and constipation among American adults. METHODS: Our study leveraged data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). This comprehensive approach enabled us to summarize the weighted prevalence rates of obesity in adults. To further deepen our understanding, we employed a variety of analytical methods. These included multivariable logistic regression, subgroup analysis and restricted cubic splines. Through these methodologies, we were able to effectively evaluate the correlation between various obesity indicators and constipation, offering new insights into this complex relationship. RESULTS: The weighted prevalence of constipation stands at 9.42%. Notably, an increased risk of constipation is linked with a BMI (body mass index) exceeding 28 kg/m2, WSR (waist-stature ratio) that is either between 58.3 and 64.8 or above 64.8, as well as a LAP (lipid accumulation products) ranging from 50.8 to 90.1. In contrast, a reduced risk of constipation is associated with WWI (weight-adjusted-waist index) that falls between 0.015 and 0.020, exceeds 0.020, and without the presence of central obesity (P < 0.05). Restricted cubic spline analysis, a significant non-linear relationship was discerned between BMI, WSR, and LAP in relation to constipation. CONCLUSIONS: This pioneering large-scale study explores the relationship between various obesity indices and constipation. It reveals that reducing the BMI, WSR, LAP and waist circumference can decrease the risk of constipation. Conversely, a higher value of WWI correlates with a lower constipation risk, and this remains true even after adjusting for a wide range of variables.

In vertebrates, action selection often involves higher cognition entailing an evaluative process. However, urgent tasks, such as defensive escape, require an immediate implementation of the directionality of escape trajectory, necessitating local circuits. Here we reveal a specialized spinal circuit for the execution of escape direction in adult zebrafish. A central component of this circuit is a unique class of segmentally repeating cholinergic V2a interneurons expressing the transcription factor Chx10. These interneurons amplify brainstem-initiated escape commands and rapidly deliver the excitation via a feedforward circuit to all fast motor neurons and commissural interneurons to direct the escape maneuver. The information transfer within this circuit relies on fast and reliable axo-axonic synaptic connections, bypassing soma and dendrites. Unilateral ablation of cholinergic V2a interneurons eliminated escape command propagation. Thus, in vertebrates, local spinal circuits can implement directionality of urgent motor actions vital for survival.

ASH1L potentially contributes to Tourette syndrome (TS) and other neuropsychiatric disorders, as our previous studies have shown. It regulates essential developmental genes by counteracting polycomb-mediated transcriptional repression, which restricts chromatin accessibility at target genes. ASH1L is highly expressed in the adult brain, playing a crucial role in the early stage. However, it remains unclear how ASH1L mutations carried by patients with TS participate in regulating neuronal growth processes leading to TS traits. Five TS families recruited in our study underwent comprehensive physical examinations and questionnaires to record clinical phenotypes and environmental impact factors. We validated the variants via Sanger sequencing and constructed two mutants near the catalytic domain of ASH1L. We conducted molecular modeling, in vitro assays, and primary neuron cultures to find the role of ASH1L in neuronal development and its correlation with TS. In this study, we validated five pathogenic ASH1L rare variants and observed symptoms in patients with simple tics and behavioral comorbidities. Mutations near the catalytic domain of TS patients cause mental state abnormalities and disrupt ASH1L function by destabilizing its spatial conformation, leading to decreased activity of catalytic H3K4, thereby affecting the neurite growth. We need to conduct larger-scale studies on TS patients and perform additional neurological evaluations on mature neurons. We first reported the effects of ASH1L mutations in TS patients, including phenotypic heterogeneity, protein function, and neurological growth. This information contributes to understanding the neurodevelopmental pathogenesis of TS in patients with ASH1L mutations.

Cow milk consumption (CMC) and downstream alterations of serum metabolites are commonly considered important factors regulating human health status. Foods may lead to metabolic changes directly or indirectly through remodelling gut microbiota (GM). We sought to identify the metabolic alterations in Chinese Peri-/Postmenopausal women with habitual CMC and explore if the GM mediates the CMC-metabolite associations. 346 Chinese Peri-/Postmenopausal women participants were recruited in this study. Fixed effects regression and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) were applied to reveal alterations of serum metabolic features in different CMC groups. Spearman correlation coefficient was computed to detect metabolome-metagenome association. 36 CMC-associated metabolites including palmitic acid (FA(16:0)), 7alpha-hydroxy-4-cholesterin-3-one (7alphaC4), citrulline were identified by both fixed effects regression (FDR < 0.05) and PLS-DA (VIP score > 2). Some significant metabolite-GM associations were observed, including FA(16:0) with gut species Bacteroides ovatus, Bacteroides sp.D2. These findings would further prompt our understanding of the effect of cow milk on human health.

Graphene-like 2D nanomaterials, such as graphene, MXene, molybdenum disulfide, and boron nitride, present a promising avenue for eco-friendly flame retardants. Their inherent characteristics, including metal-like conductivity, high specific surface area, electron transport capacity, and solution processability, make them highly suitable for applications in both structural fire protection and fire alarm systems. This review offers an up-to-date exploration of advancements in flame retardant composites, utilizing pristine graphene-like nanosheets, versatile graphene-like nanosheets with multiple functions, and collaborative systems based on these nanomaterials. Moreover, graphene-like 2D nanomaterials exhibit considerable potential in the development of early fire alarm systems, enabling timely warnings. This review provides an overview of flame-retarding and fire-warning mechanisms, diverse multifunctional nanocomposites, and the evolving trends in the development of fire alarm systems anchored in graphene-like 2D nanomaterials and their derivatives. Ultimately, the existing challenges and prospective directions for the utilization of graphene-like 2D nanomaterials in flame retardant and fire-warning applications are put forward.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to understand how age, health status, and lifestyle impact bone mineral density (BMD) in middle-aged and older adults, focusing on predicting osteoporosis risk. METHODS: This study included 2836 participants aged 50-88 from the Health Improvement Program of Bone (HOPE) conducted from 2021 to 2023. We used logistic regression to make a prediction tool. Then checked its accuracy and reliability using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and calibration curves. RESULTS: Factors like age, body weight, prior fractures, and smoking were independently found to affect BMD T-score distribution in men. In women, age and body weight were identified as independent factors influencing BMD T-score distribution. A nomogram was created to visually illustrate these predictive relationships. CONCLUSIONS: The nomogram proved highly accurate in identifying men aged 50 and above and postmenopausal women based on their BMD T-score distribution, improving clinical decision-making and patient care in osteoporosis evaluation and treatment.

Osteoporosis affects approximately 200 million people and severely affects quality of life, but the exact pathological mechanisms behind this disease remain unclear. Various miRNAs have been shown to play a predominant role in the regulation of osteoclast formation. In this study, we explored the role of miR-134-5p in osteoclastogenesis both in vivo and in vitro. We constructed an ovariectomized (OVX) mouse model and performed microarray analysis using bone tissue from OVX mice and their control counterparts. Quantitative RT-PCR data from bone tissue and bone marrow macrophages (BMMs) confirmed the decreased expression of miR-134-5p in OVX mice observed in microarray analysis. In addition, a decrease in miR-134-5p was also observed during induced osteoclastogenesis of BMMs collected from C57BL/6N mice. Through transfection with miR-134-5p agomirs and antagomirs, we found that miR-134-5p knockdown significantly accelerated osteoclast formation and cell proliferation and inhibited apoptosis. Furthermore, a luciferase reporter assay showed that miR-134-5p directly targets the integrin surface receptor gene Itgb1. Cotransfection with Itgb1 siRNA reversed the effect of the miR-134-5p antagomir in promoting osteoclastogenesis. Moreover, the abundance levels of MAPK pathway proteins phosphorylated-p38 (p-p38) and phosphorylated-ERK (p-ERK) were significantly increased after transfection with the miR-134-5p antagomir but decreased after transfection with the miR-134-5p agomir or Itgb1 siRNA, which indicated a potential relationship between the miR-134-5p/Itgb1 axis and the MAPK pathway. Collectively, these results revealed that miR-134-5p inhibits osteoclast differentiation of BMMs both in vivo and in vitro and that the miR-134-5p/Itgb1/MAPK pathway might be a potential target for osteoporosis therapy.

Reactive metal-support interactions (RMSIs) induce the formation of bimetallic alloys and offer an effective way to tune the electronic and geometric properties of metal sites for advanced catalysis. However, RMSIs often require high-temperature reductions (>500 °C), which significantly limits the tuning of bimetallic compositional varieties. Here, we report that an atomically thick Ga2O3 coating of Pd nanoparticles enables the initiation of RMSIs at a much lower temperature of ∼250 °C. State-of-the-art microscopic and in situ spectroscopic studies disclose that low-temperature RMSIs initiate the formation of rarely reported Ga-rich PdGa alloy phases, distinct from the Pd2Ga phase formed in traditional Pd/Ga2O3 catalysts after high-temperature reduction. In the CO2 hydrogenation reaction, the Ga-rich alloy phases impressively boost the formation of methanol and dimethyl ether ∼5 times higher than that of Pd/Ga2O3. In situ infrared spectroscopy reveals that the Ga-rich phases greatly favor formate formation as well as its subsequent hydrogenation, thus leading to high productivity.

Antiplatelet therapy (APT) plays an important role in the prevention of ischaemic stroke (IS). Our aim was to assess the influence of short-term single APT (SAPT) and dual APT (DAPT) on the prognosis of patients with acute IS with and without cerebral microbleeds (CMBs). We conducted a single-centre, retrospective, observational cohort study of patients with acute IS who underwent susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) to determine the presence of CMBs between January 2015 and December 2020. The patients were treated with either DAPT or SAPT and followed up for at least 2 years. The primary endpoint was a composite of recurrent IS and intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH), while either recurrent IS or ICH was considered as other endpoints. We computed weighted Kaplan-Meier curves and identified risk factors using the Cox proportional hazards model. Among the 581 enrolled patients, those with CMBs (n = 225; P = 0.004) had a higher risk of the primary endpoint than those without CMBs (n = 356), especially higher risk of recurrent IS (P = 0.029). In the SAPT group, the presence of CMBs increased the risk of the primary endpoint (P = 0.013), especially that of recurrent IS (P = 0.019). In the DAPT group, the occurrence of ICH was higher in patients with CMBs (P = 0.031). The CMB distribution did not influence the risk of recurrent IS or ICH. In patients with acute IS and CMBs, DAPT may offset the risk of recurrent IS due to CMBs but increase the risk of ICH.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to examine whether HIV infection was independently associated with frailty status and its individual components. METHODS: This cross-sectional investigation included people living with HIV (PLWH) and HIV-negative individuals from the baseline survey of the Comparative HIV and Aging Research in Taizhou (CHART) cohort, China. Frailty phenotype was based on five components: weight loss, low physical activity, exhaustion, weak grip strength and slow gait speed. Frailty was defined as the presence of at least three components, and prefrailty was defined as one or two components. Logistic regression models were used to analyse the factors associated with frailty and its components. RESULTS: In all, 2475 people living with HIV (age 45.5 ± 14.9 years; 76.2% male) and 4948 HIV-negative individuals (age 45.5 ± 14.8 years; 76.3% male) were included. Among PLWH, median CD4 count was 395 cells/µL and 78% were currently on antiretroviral therapy (ART). Frailty and prefrailty were significantly more prevalent in PLWH (3.2% vs 1.9% and 32.9% vs 27.9%) overall and at ages 18-39 (1.4% vs 0.2% and 22.7% vs 19.0%), 40-59 (2.5% vs 0.9% and 30.9% vs 27.9%) and 60-90 years (8.4% vs 7.4% and 57.1% vs 45.8%). HIV infection was associated with frailty and prefrailty [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 1.48, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.06-2.08; and aOR = 1.18, 95% CI: 1.05-1.33, respectively] after adjusting for confounding variables, but were strengthened with further adjustment for multimorbidity (aOR = 1.62, 95% CI: 1.14-2.28; and aOR = 1.22, 95% CI: 1.09-1.37), and were no longer significant with further adjustment for depressive symptoms and sleep disorders (aOR = 1.02, 95% CI: 0.71-1.46; and aOR = 1.06, 95% CI: 0.94-1.20). Among individual components, HIV infection was positively associated with weak grip strength and slow gait speed, but negatively associated with low physical activity and exhaustion in all the adjusted models described. CONCLUSIONS: Frailty and prefrailty occur more often and earlier in PLWH. However, grip strength and gait speed are affected to a greater extent, highlighting their potential as screening and intervention targets to prevent or slow frailty among PLWH.

In this study, (1 + 1) × 1 side-pump couplers made of tellurite fibers were fabricated and investigated. The whole optical design of the coupler was established on the basis of ray tracing models and validated by experimental results. By optimizing the preparation conditions and structural parameters, the tested component achieved a coupling efficiency of 67.52% and an insertion loss of 0.52 dB. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time a tellurite-fiber-based side-pump coupler was developed. The fused coupler presented will simplify many mid-infrared fiber lasers or amplifier architectures.

Supercontinuum sources with high compactness are essential for applications such as optical sensing, airborne detection and communication systems. In the past decades, the adoption of bulky optical parametric amplifier to pump various chalcogenide glass waveguides are widely reported for on-chip mid-infrared supercontinuum generation, but this usually leads to a large volume of the whole system, and is not practical. Therefore, integrating advanced femtosecond fiber lasers with optical waveguides using nano-fabrication technology are highly desired. However, the scarcity of compact pump sources and the dispersion-matched high-nonlinearity waveguide in short wavelength regions have hindered the advancement of integrated supercontinuum source performances in the near and mid-infrared region. In this study, we demonstrate a broadband supercontinuum source from As2S3 waveguide pumped by a compact dual-femtosecond solitons pulse source. The laser is completely fiber structured, and its wavelength can be readily tuned from 2 to 2.3 µm using Raman soliton self-frequency shift technology in a Tm3+-doped fiber amplifier. Furthermore, the As2S3 waveguide is designed with controllable dispersion and high nonlinearity for a broadband supercontinuum generation. These results will advance the development of on-chip supercontinuum sources based on chalcogenide waveguides.

BACKGROUND: Accurate identification of extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ECC) from an image is challenging because of the small size and complex background structure. Therefore, considering the limitation of manual delineation, it's necessary to develop automated identification and segmentation methods for ECC. The aim of this study was to develop a deep learning approach for automatic identification and segmentation of ECC using MRI. METHODS: We recruited 137 ECC patients from our hospital as the main dataset (C1) and an additional 40 patients from other hospitals as the external validation set (C2). All patients underwent axial T1-weighted imaging (T1WI), T2-weighted imaging (T2WI), and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). Manual delineations were performed and served as the ground truth. Next, we used 3D VB-Net to establish single-mode automatic identification and segmentation models based on T1WI (model 1), T2WI (model 2), and DWI (model 3) in the training cohort (80% of C1), and compared them with the combined model (model 4). Subsequently, the generalization capability of the best models was evaluated using the testing set (20% of C1) and the external validation set (C2). Finally, the performance of the developed models was further evaluated. RESULTS: Model 3 showed the best identification performance in the training, testing, and external validation cohorts with success rates of 0.980, 0.786, and 0.725, respectively. Furthermore, model 3 yielded an average Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) of 0.922, 0.495, and 0.466 to segment ECC automatically in the training, testing, and external validation cohorts, respectively. CONCLUSION: The DWI-based model performed better in automatically identifying and segmenting ECC compared to T1WI and T2WI, which may guide clinical decisions and help determine prognosis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Studies have shown that elevated serum uric acid (SUA) may increase the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). However, it is still disputable how mediate effects between metabolic diseases and hyperuricemia affect the incidence of CHD. This study aimed to explore whether metabolic diseases may mediate the connection from hyperuricemia at baseline to the elevated incidence risk of CHD during follow-ups. METHODS AND RESULTS: Based on the Jinchang cohort, 48 001 subjects were followed for 9 years between June 2011 and December 2019. Multivariate-adjusted Cox regression models were applied to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) of CHD with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Significantly increased risks of CHD were observed in hyperuricemia (HR:1.46, 95%CI:1.28, 1.67) when compared with normouricemia population. The mediating effect model further demonstrated that metabolic diseases could mediate the association between hyperuricemia and CHD pathogenesis, partially for the combined metabolic diseases with mediation effects of 45.12%, 25.24% for hypertension, 28.58% for overweight or obese status, 29.05% for hypertriglyceridemia, 6.70% for hypercholesterolemia, 3.52% for low high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and 6.51% for high low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Hyperuricemia significantly increased the risk of incident CHD, and this association was partly mediated by metabolic diseases.

Cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) are commonly detected in the brains of patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). With the development of neuroimaging, clinicians are paying more attention to the presence of CMBs. CMBs were found to significantly increase the risk of intracranial hemorrhagic transformation and hemorrhage in patients with AIS, especially in patients with concurrent atrial fibrillation (AF). Additionally, the presence of CMBs is thought to be a symbol of a high risk of recurrent ischemic stroke (IS). A few researchers have found that the presence of CMBs has no significant effect on the prognosis of patients with AIS. Therefore, the current views on the role of CMBs in the prognoses of patients with IS are controversial. The use of anticoagulants and other drugs has also become a dilemma due to the special influence of CMBs on the prognosis of these patients. Due to the large number of patients with AF and CMBs, many studies have been conducted on the effects of CMBs on these patients and subsequent pharmacological treatments. However, at present, there are no relevant guidelines to guide the secondary preventive treatment of patients with stroke, CMBs, and AF. In this paper, we summarized the role of CMBs in AIS combined with AF and relevant preventive measures against the recurrence of stroke and the occurrence of intracerebral hemorrhage to help clarify the specifics of drug therapies for this group of patients.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to explore application value of iodine concentration from dual-energy spectral computed tomography (DESCT) in preoperative prediction of lymphovascular tumor thrombus in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). METHODS: We finally retrospectively analyzed 50 patients with CRC who underwent abdominal DESCT before receiving any preoperative treatment and underwent surgery to obtain pathological specimens which were stained with hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining. According to the presence of cancer cell nests in blood vessels and lymphatic vessels, the subjects were divided into the positive group and negative group of lymphovascular tumor thrombus. Two radiologists independently measured the normalized iodine concentration (NIC) values, effective atomic number (Zeff) and CT values of virtual monochromatic images (VMIs) at 40-90 keV of the primary tumors in the arterial phase (AP) and venous phase (VP). Used SPSS 17.0 to calculate the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve to evaluate diagnostic value. RESULTS: The patients were divided into lymphovascular tumor thrombus positive group(n = 16) and negative group(n = 34). The values of NIC-AP and NIC-VP in the positive group were 0.17 ± 0.09, 0.51 ± 0.13, respectively. And those in the negative group were 0.15 ± 0.06, 0.43 ± 0.12, respectively. There was significant difference in NIC-VP value between the two groups (p = 0.039), but there was no significant difference in NIC-AP value (p = 0.423). The optimal threshold value of NIC-VP value for diagnosis of lymphovascular tumor thrombus was 0.364. The sensitivity was 68.8% and the specificity was 67.6%. CONCLUSIONS: The NIC-VP value of DESCT can be used to predict the presence or absence of the lymphovascular tumor thrombus in CRC patients before operation, which is helpful to select the best treatment scheme and evaluate its prognosis.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic increases the risk of psychological problems, especially for the infected population. Sleep disturbance and feelings of defeat and entrapment are well-documented risk factors of anxiety symptoms. Exploring the psychological mechanism of the development of anxiety symptoms is essential for effective prevention. This study aimed to examine the mediating effects of entrapment and defeat in the association between sleep disturbance and anxiety symptoms among asymptomatic COVID-19 carriers in Shanghai, China. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from March to April, 2022. Participants were 1,283 asymptomatic COVID-19 carriers enrolled from the Ruijin Jiahe Fangcang Shelter Hospital, Shanghai (59.6% male; mean age = 39.6 years). Questionnaire measures of sleep disturbance, entrapment, defeat, anxiety symptoms, and background characteristics were obtained. A mediation model was constructed to test the mediating effects of entrapment and defeat in the association between sleep disturbance and anxiety symptoms. RESULTS: The prevalence rates of sleep disturbance and anxiety symptoms were 34.3% and 18.8%. Sleep disturbance was positively associated with anxiety symptoms (OR [95%CI] = 5.013 [3.721-6.753]). The relationship between sleep disturbance and anxiety symptoms (total effect: Std. Estimate = 0.509) was partially mediated by entrapment (indirect effect: Std. Estimate = 0.129) and defeat (indirect effect: Std. Estimate = 0.126). The mediating effect of entrapment and defeat accounted for 50.3% of the association between sleep disturbance and anxiety symptoms. CONCLUSION: Sleep disturbance and anxiety symptoms were prevalent among asymptomatic COVID-19 carriers. Entrapment and defeat mediate the association between sleep disturbance and anxiety symptoms. More attention is needed to monitoring sleep conditions and feelings of defeat and entrapment to reduce the risk of anxiety.
