RESUMO

Adsorption separation of the Xe/Kr mixture remains a tough issue since Xe and Kr have an inert nature and similar sizes. Here we present a chlorinated metal-organic framework (MOF) [JXNU-19(Cl)] and its nonchlorinated analogue (JXNU-19) for Xe/Kr separation. The two isostructural MOFs constructed from the heptanuclear cobalt-hydroxyl clusters bridged by organic ligands are three-dimensional structures. Detailed contrast of the Xe/Kr adsorption separation properties of the MOF shows that significantly enhanced Xe uptakes and Xe/Kr adsorption selectivity (17.1) are observed for JXNU-19 as compared to JXNU-19(Cl). The main binding sites for Xe in the MOF revealed by computational simulations are far away from the chlorine sites, suggesting that the introduction of the chlorine groups results in the unfavorable Xe adsorption for JXNU-19(Cl). The optimal pores, high surface area, and multiple strong Xe-framework interactions facilitate the effective Xe/Kr separation for JXNU-19.

BACKGROUND: Non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a common cancer. Chemotherapeutic drug resistance limits the therapeutic effect of NSCLC and leads to a poor prognosis. As a result, new specific targets may be better identified by studying the mechanism of drug resistance to cisplatin in NSCLC. METHODS: In the present study, we performed a quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and western blotting to detect mRNA and protein levels. The proliferation of cells was analyzed by a Cell Counting Kit-8 and colony formation assays. Cell invasion was measured via the Transwell assay. A scratch assay was performed to measure cell migration in cisplatin (DDP)-resistant NSCLC cells. Apoptosis of cells was examined using flow cytometry. RESULTS: We found that circANKRD28 was notably decreased in NSCLC. The results showed that circANKRD28 expression was not affected, and its half-life was more than 12 h. Functional experiments revealed that circANKRD28 overexpression inhibited DDP resistance in NSCLC cells in vitro. Mechanistic findings demonstrated that circANKRD28 regulated tumor cell progression and DDP sensitivity through the miR-221-3p/SOCS3 axis. CONCLUSIONS: The present study revealed the regulatory effects and molecular mechanism of circANKRD28 on the development and cisplatin resistance in NSCLC, which may provide experimental basis and theoretical support to identify new targets for therapy of DDP resistance in NSCLC.

Captive pandas are suffering from intestinal infection due to intestinal microbiota characterized by a high abundance of Enterobacteriaceae induced by long-term captivity. Probiotic supplements showed improvement in intestinal barrier function and inflammation. However, the effects of panda-derived probiotics on the intestinal epithelium and inflammation have not been elucidated. In the present study, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) impaired Caco-2 and RAW264.7 inflammatory models were applied to assess the protection of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum BSG201683 (L. plantarum G83) on barrier disruption and inflammation. The results showed that treatment with L. plantarum G83 significantly decreased the paracellular permeability to fluorescein isothiocyanate conjugated dextran (MW 4000, FITC-D4) after LPS induction. Meanwhile, L. plantarum G83 alleviated the reduction in tight junction (TJ) proteins and downregulated proinflammatory cytokines caused by LPS in Caco-2 cells. L. plantarum G83 also significantly decreased the expression and secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines in LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells. In addition, the IL-10 increased in both Caco-2 and RAW264.7 cells after L. plantarum G83 treatment. The phagocytosis activity of RAW264.7 cells was significantly increased after L. plantarum G83 treatment. Toll-like receptor 4/ nuclear factor kappa-B (TLR4/NF-κB) signaling pathways were significantly down-regulated after L. plantarum G83 intervention, and the phosphorylation of NF-κB/p65 was consistent with this result. Our findings suggest that L. plantarum G83 improves intestinal inflammation and epithelial barrier disruption in vitro.

Ionic co-assembly of tetra-anionic porphyrins has been extensively researched in the construction of hierarchically organized architectures with potential application value in organic semiconductors, sunlight catalysts and supramolecular chirality systems. However, such architectures are difficult to grow to a size suitable for single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD); the lack of single-crystal structures of these architectures leads to challenges in gaining deeper comprehension about that. This study reports a hierarchically organized cocrystal of meso-tetra(4-sulfonato-phenyl)-porphyrin (TSPP4- ) and N, N'-diethyl-viologen (DEV2+ ), wherein wave-like and saddle-like TSPP4- ions co-aggregate at a stoichiometric ratio of 1 : 2 to form unique porphyrin arrays; the spectrum characteristics and calculated coulombic exciton coupling energy show that these porphyrin arrays are J-aggregates. We prove that the distortion of porphyrin ring of TSPP4- strongly correlates with the deflection of its phenyl groups. The crystal comprises six different ionic conformations, and the multiplicity of ionic conformation leads to intricate supramolecular interactions.

A pair of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) of JXNU-15 (formulated as [Co6(µ3-OH)6(BTB)2(BPY)3]n, BTB3- = benzene-1,3,5-tribenzoate and BPY = 4,4'-bipyridine) and its fluorinated JXNU-15(F) ([Co6(µ3-OH)6(SFBTB)2(BPY)3]n) based on the fluorous 1,3,5-tri(3,5-bifluoro-4-carboxyphenyl)benzene (SFBTB3-) ligands were presented. The detailed comparisons of the acetylene/carbon dioxide (C2H2/CO2) separation abilities between the isostructural JXNU-15(F) and JXNU-15 were presented. In comparison with the parent JXNU-15, the higher C2H2 uptake, larger adsorption selectivity of the C2H2/CO2 (50/50) mixture, and enhanced C2H2/CO2 separation performance endow JXNU-15(F) with highly efficient C2H2/CO2 separation performance, which is demonstrated by singe-component gas adsorptions and dynamic gas mixture breakthrough experiments. The fluorine substituents exert the crucial effects on the enhanced C2H2/CO2 separation ability of JXNU-15(F) and play the dominant role in the C2H2-framework interactions, as uncovered by computational simulations. This work illustrates a powerful fluorine substitution strategy for boosting C2H2/CO2 separation ability for MOFs.

Herein, a metal-organic framework (MOF), {[(Me2NH2)4][Cd(H2O)6][Cd18(TrZ)12(TPD)15(DMF)6]}n (denoted as JXNU-18, TrZ = triazolate), constructed from the unique cucurbituril-shaped Cd18(TrZ)12 secondary building units bridged by 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic (TPD2-) ligands, is presented. The formation of the cucurbituril-shaped Cd18(TrZ)12 unit is unprecedented, demonstrating the geometric compatibility of the organic linkers and the coordination configurations of the cadmium atoms. Each Cd18(TrZ)12 unit is connected to eight neighboring Cd18(TrZ)12 units through 30 TPD2- linkers, affording the three-dimensional structure of JXNU-18. More interesting is that JXNU-18 displays an efficient C2H2/CO2 separation ability, as revealed by the gas adsorption experiments and dynamic gas breakthrough experiments, which afford insights into the potential applications of JXNU-18 in gas separation. The tubular pores composed of two Cd18(TrZ)12 units bridged by six 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic linkers provide the suitable pore space for C2H2 trapping, as unveiled by computational simulations.

Bisphenol F (BPF) and bisphenol S (BPS) are emerging bisphenols, which have become the main substitutes for bisphenol A (BPA) in industrial production and are also considered as new environmental pollution challenges. Thus, the necessity for an effective approach to remove BPF and BPS is essential. In this study, fulvic acid (FA) was used to modify Co-Fe binary metals (CFO) for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. The characterization results demonstrated that CFO changed significantly in morphology after compounding with FA, with smaller particle size and 5.6 times larger specific surface area, greatly increasing the active sites of catalyst; Moreover, humic acid-like compounds increased the surface functional groups of CFO, especially phenolic hydroxyl, which could effectively prolong the PMS activation. The concentration of all reactive species, such as SO4•-, •OH, O2•-, and 1O2 increased in FA@CFO/PMS system. As a result, the degradation efficiency of CFO for both BPF and BPS was significantly improved after compounding FA, which also had a wide range of pH applications. The degradation pathways of both BPF and BPS were proposed based on liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis and the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Our findings are expected to provide new strategies and methods for remediation of environmental pollution caused by emerging bisphenols.

Fluoride is a common contaminant of groundwater and agricultural commodity, which poses challenges to animal and human health. A wealth of research has demonstrated its detrimental effects on intestinal mucosal integrity; however, the underlying mechanisms remain obscure. This study aimed to investigate the role of the cytoskeleton in fluoride-induced barrier dysfunction. After sodium fluoride (NaF) treatment of the cultured Caco-2 cells, both cytotoxicity and cytomorphological changes (internal vacuoles or massive ablation) were observed. NaF lowered transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) and enhanced paracellular permeation of fluorescein isothiocyanate dextran 4 (FD-4), indicating Caco-2 monolayers hyperpermeability. In the meantime, NaF treatment altered both the expression and distribution of the tight junction protein ZO-1. Fluoride exposure increased myosin light chain II (MLC2) phosphorylation and triggered actin filament (F-actin) remodeling. While inhibition of myosin II by Blebbistatin blocked NaF-induced barrier failure and ZO-1 discontinuity, the corresponding agonist Ionomycin had effects comparable to those of fluoride, suggesting that MLC2 serves as an effector. Given the mechanisms upstream of p-MLC2 regulation, further studies demonstrated that NaF activated RhoA/ROCK signaling pathway and myosin light chain kinase (MLCK), strikingly increasing the expression of both. Pharmacological inhibitors (Rhosin, Y-27632 and ML-7) reversed NaF-induced barrier breakdown and stress fiber formation. The role of intracellular calcium ions ([Ca2+]i) in NaF effects on Rho/ROCK pathway and MLCK was investigated. We found that NaF elevated [Ca2+]i, whereas chelator BAPTA-AM attenuated increased RhoA and MLCK expression as well as ZO-1 rupture, thus, restoring barrier function. Collectively, abovementioned results suggest that NaF induces barrier impairment via Ca2+-dependent RhoA/ROCK pathway and MLCK, which in turn triggers MLC2 phosphorylation and rearrangement of ZO-1 and F-actin. These results provide potential therapeutic targets for fluoride-induced intestinal injury.

The Ethylene Responsive Factor (ERF) transcription factor family is important for regulating plant growth and stress responses. Although the expression patterns of ERF family members have been reported in many plant species, their role in Populus alba × Populus glandulosa, an important model plant for forest research, remains unclear. In this study, we identified 209 PagERF transcription factors by analyzing the P. alba × P. glandulosa genome. We analyzed their amino acid sequences, molecular weight, theoretical pI (Isoelectric point), instability index, aliphatic index, grand average of hydropathicity, and subcellular localization. Most PagERFs were predicted to localize in the nucleus, with only a few PagERFs localized in the cytoplasm and nucleus. Phylogenetic analysis divided the PagERF proteins into ten groups, Class I to X, with those belonging to the same group containing similar motifs. Cis-acting elements associated with plant hormones, abiotic stress responses, and MYB binding sites were analyzed in the promoters of PagERF genes. We used transcriptome data to analyze the expression patterns of PagERF genes in different tissues of P. alba × P. glandulosa, including axillary buds, young leaves, functional leaves, cambium, xylem, and roots, and the results indicated that PagERF genes are expressed in all tissues of P. alba × P. glandulosa, especially in roots. Quantitative verification results were consistent with transcriptome data. When P. alba × P. glandulosa seedlings were treated with 6% polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG6000), the results of RT-qRCR showed that nine PagERF genes responded to drought stress in various tissues. This study provides a new perspective on the roles of PagERF family members in regulating plant growth and development, and responses to stress in P. alba × P. glandulosa. Our study provides a theoretical basis for ERF family research in the future.

Background Infrapatellar fat pad (IPFP) quality has been implicated as a marker for predicting knee osteoarthritis (KOA); however, no valid quantification for subtle IPFP abnormalities has been established. Purpose To investigate whether MRI-based three-dimensional texture analysis of IPFP abnormalities could help predict incident radiographic KOA. Materials and Methods In this prospective nested case-control study, 690 participants whose knees were at risk for KOA were included from the Pivotal Osteoarthritis Initiative MRI Analyses incident osteoarthritis cohort. All knees had a Kellgren-Lawrence grade of 1 or less at baseline. During the 4-year follow-up, case participants were matched 1:1 to control participants, with incident radiographic KOA as the outcome. MRI scans were segmented at the incident time point of KOA (hereafter, P0), 1 year before P0 (hereafter, P-1), and baseline. MRI-based three-dimensional texture analysis was performed to extract IPFP texture features. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator and multivariable logistic regressions were applied in the development cohort and evaluated in the test cohort. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was used to evaluate the discriminative value of the clinical score, IPFP texture score, and MRI Osteoarthritis Knee Score. Results Participants were allocated to development (n = 500, 340 women; mean age, 60 years) and test (n = 190, 120 women; mean age, 61 years) cohorts. In both cohorts, IPFP texture scores (AUC ≥0.75 for all) showed greater discrimination than clinical scores (AUC ≤0.69 for all) at baseline, P-1, and P0, with significant differences in pairwise comparisons (P ≤ .002 for all). Greater predictive and concurrent validities of IPFP texture scores (AUC ≥0.75 for all) compared with MRI Osteoarthritis Knee Scores (AUC ≤0.66 for all) were also demonstrated (P < .001 for all). Conclusion MRI-based three-dimensional texture of the infrapatellar fat pad was associated with future development of knee osteoarthritis. Increasing reports have indicated that specific strains of probiotic Bacillus have the potential to prevent diseases. The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of three Bacillus strains (Bacillus subtilis BSWJ2017001, Bacillus pumilus BSWJ2017002, and B. subtilis BSWJ2017003) mixture dietary supplementation on rex rabbits infected with enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). In this study, 60 35-day-old weaning rex rabbits were separated into two groups randomly: control group (fed basal diet with no antibiotics) and Bacillus strains group (fed basal diet containing 1.0 × 106 CFU/g Bacillus strains mixture). After 8 weeks of feeding, the rex rabbits were inoculated orally with 5.0 mL of ETEC (1.0 × 109 CFU/mL) and assessed at 0, 12, and 24 h. The Bacillus strains mixture attenuated the oxidative damage, diarrhea severity, and intestinal damage of ETEC infected rabbits. It also significantly increased the population of Lactobacillus spp., and Bifidobacterium spp., and decreased the population of Enterococcus spp.. Moreover, Bacillus strains group exhibited higher levels of toll-like receptor (TLR) 2, anti-inflammatory cytokines, secretory immunoglobulin A, and intestinal barrier-related genes than control group, as well as lower levels of TLR-4 and pro-inflammatory cytokines. These results demonstrated that Bacillus strains mixture could attenuate injury caused by ETEC and enhance disease resistance by improving specific intestinal microbiota members and immunity in weaning rex rabbits.

Long non-coding RNA brain cytoplasmic RNA 1 (LncRNA BCYRN1) has been proved to participate in the cancer cell metastasis process, including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, the underlying molecular mechanisms involved in the BCYRN1-mediated function remain largely unknown. The qRT-PCR analysis was carried out to examine the relative expressions of BCYRN1, microRNA-30b-3p (miR-30b-3p), and Rho-associated coiled-coil protein kinase 1 (ROCK1). ROCK1 protein level was detected via western blot assay. The migrative and invasive abilities of H520 and A549 cells were evaluated via Transwell assay. The relationships between BCYRN1 and miR-30b-3p or ROCK1 and miR-30b-3p were examined by luciferase reporter assay. The expression levels of BCYRN1 and ROCK1 were upregulated in NSCLC tissues and cells, while miR-30b-3p was downregulated. Higher BCYRN1 expression indicated lymph node metastasis and advanced tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) stage of NSCLC patients. Loss of BCYRN1 suppressed cell migration and invasion. More importantly, miR-30b-3p possessed the binding sites with BCYRN1. Besides, BCYRN1 negatively regulated the expression level of miR-30b-3p. Meanwhile, ROCK1 was proven to be directly targeted by miR-30b-3p. In addition, the silencing of miR-30b-3p also weakened the effect of BCYRN1 knockdown on cell migration and invasion. In vivo, BCYRN1 silencing reduced the growth of A549 cells. LncRNA BCYRN1 was involved in the metastasis of NSCLC through modulating the miR-30b-3p/ROCK1 axis.

Bruceine D is a natural quassinoid, which was successfully isolated in our research group from the residue of Brucea javanica (L.) seeds. Our previous research showed that Bruceine D prevented Bidens pilosa L. seed germination by suppressing the activity of key enzymes and the expression levels of key genes involved in the phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathway. In this study, integrated analyses of non-targeted metabolomic and transcriptomic were performed. A total of 356 different accumulated metabolites (DAMs) were identified, and KEGG pathway analyses revealed that most of these DAMs were involved in phenylpropanoid biosynthesis. The decreased expression of ADTs and content of L-phenylalanine implicates that Bruceine D may suppress the downstream phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathway by disrupting primary metabolism, that is, the phenylalanine biosynthesis pathway, thus inhibiting the final products, resulting in the interruption of B. pilosa seed germination. These results suggest that Bruceine D may inhibit the B. pilosa seed germination by suppressing phenylpropanoid biosynthesis through acting on ADTs.

Patulin (PAT) is a mycotoxin, with several acute, chronic, and cellular level toxic effects, produced by various fungi. A limit for PAT in food of has been set by authorities to guarantee food safety. Research on PAT in tea has been very limited although tea is the second largest beverage in the world. In this paper, HPLC-DAD and GC-MS methods for analysis of PAT in different tea products, such as non-fermented (green tea), partially fermented (oolong tea, white tea, yellow tea), completely fermented (black tea), and post-fermented (dark tea and Pu-erh tea) teas were developed. The methods showed good selectivity with regard to tea pigments and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) and a recovery of 90-102% for PAT at a 10-100 ppb spiking level. Limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) in tea were 1.5 ng/g and 5.0 ng/g for HPLC-UV, and 0.25 ng/g and 0.83 ng/g for GC-MS. HPLC was simpler and more robust, while GC-MS showed higher sensitivity and selectivity. GC-MS was used to validate the HPLC-UV method and prove its accuracy. The PAT content of 219 Chinese tea samples was investigated. Most tea samples contained less than 10 ng/g, ten more than 10 ng/g and two more than 50 ng/g. The results imply that tea products in China are safe with regard to their PAT content. Even an extreme daily consumption of 25 g of the tea with the highest PAT content (124 ng/g), translates to an intake of only 3 µg/person/day, which is still an order of magnitude below the maximum allowed daily intake of 30 µg for an adult.

It has been reported that cyclin-dependent kinase like 3 (CDKL3) plays a crucial role in cell proliferation and migration in several cancers. However, the function of CDKL3 in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is still unclear. In the present study, immunohistochemistry (IHC) was conducted to detect the CDKL3 expression. CCK-8, flow cytometry, Transwell assays, and mice xenograft models, were performed to explore the roles of CDKL3 on the proliferation and migration of TNBC in vitro and in vivo. Besides, protein chip analysis was used to screen the potential pathways, which was further confirmed by promoter activity assay, western blotting, and CCK-8 assay. Our findings reveal a high expression of CDKL3 in TNBC tissues, which is closely related to a poor prognosis of patients with TNBC. In TNBC cells, CDKL3 knockdown inhibits cell proliferation and migration, whereas CDKL3 overexpression has exactly the opposite effect. Consistently, CDKL3 knockdown induces cell apoptosis in vitro but suppresses tumor growth in vivo. Furthermore, CDKL3 knockdown increases p53 expression and reduces cell viability, and these effects are significantly weakened by the p53 inhibitor, PFT-α. In conclusion, the current study highlights that CDKL3 promotes TNBC progressions via regulating the p53 signaling pathway, suggesting that CDKL3 is a novel therapeutic target for TNBC treatment.

Fluoride (F) exposure was widely reported to be associated with renal diseases. Since absorbed F enters the organism from drinking water mostly through the gastrointestinal tract, investigating changes of gut microbes may have profound implications for the prevention of chronic F exposure because increasing evidence supported the existence of the gut-kidney axis. In the present study, we aimed to explore the potential positive effects of probiotics on high F exposure-induced renal lesions and dysfunction in mice by the modulation of the colonic microbiota. Mice were fed with normal (Ctrl group) or sodium-fluoride (F and Prob groups; 100 mg/L sodium fluoride (NaF)) drinking water with or without Lactobaillus johnsonii BS15, a probiotic strain proven to be preventive for F exposure. Mice fed with sodium-fluoride drinking water alone exhibited renal tissue damages, decreased the renal antioxidant capability and dysfunction. In contrast, L. johnsonii BS15 reversed these F-induced renal changes. 16S rRNA gene sequencing shows that L. johnsonii BS15 alleviated the increased community diversity (Shannon diversity) and richness index (number of observed features) as well as the distured structure of colon microbiota in F-exposed mice. A total of 13 OTUs with increased relative abundance were identified as the keystone OTUs in F-exposed mice based on the analysis of degree of co-occurrence and abundance of OTUs. Moreover, Spearman's rank correlation shows that the 13 keystone OTUs had negative effect on renal health and intestinal integrity. L. johnsonii BS15 reversed four of keystone OTUs (OTU 5, OTU 794, OTU 1035, and OTU 868) changes which might be related to the underlying protected mechanism of L. johnsonii BS15 against F-induced renal damages.

Fluoride which is widespread in our environment and food due to its geological origin and industrial pollution has been identified as a developmental neurotoxicant. Gut-brain axis provides new insight into brain-derived injury. We previously found the psychoactive effects of a probiotic strain, Lactobacillus johnsonii BS15 against fluoride-induced memory dysfunction in mice by modulating the gut-brain axis. In this study, we aimed to detect the link between the reconstruction of gut microbiota and gut-brain axis through which probiotic alleviate fluoride-induced memory impairment. We also added an hour of water avoidance stress (WAS) before behavioral tests and sampling, aiming to demonstrate the preventive effects of the probiotic on fluoride-induced memory impairment after psychological stress. Mice were given fluoridated drinking water (sodium fluoride 100 ppm, corresponding to 37.8 ± 2.4 ppm F¯) for 70 days and administered with PBS or a probiotic strain, Lactobacillus johnsonii BS15 for 28 days prior to and throughout a 70 day exposure to sodium fluoride. Results showed that fluoride increases the hyperactivity of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and reduces the exploration ratio in novel object recognition (NOR) test and the spontaneous exploration during the T-maze test in mice following WAS, which were significantly improved by the probiotic. 16S rRNA sequencing showed a significant separation in ileal microbiota between the fluoride-treated mice and control mice. Lactobacillus was the main targeting bacteria and significantly reduced in fluoride-treated mice. BS15 reconstructed the fluoride-post microbiota and increased the relative abundance of Lactobacillus. D-lactate content and diamine oxidase (DAO) activity, two biomarkers of gut permeability were reduced in the serum of probiotic-inoculated mice. ZO-1, an intestinal tight junction protein was reduced by fluoride in mRNA, and its protein levels were increased by the probiotic treatment. Moreover, the hippocampus which is essential to learning and memory, down-regulated mRNA level of both the myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG), and protein levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), including the improvement of cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) by BS15 in fluoride-exposed mice after WAS. Via spearman correlation analysis, Lactobacillus displayed significantly positive associations with the behavioral tests, levels of nerve development related factors, and intestinal tight junction proteins ZO-1, and negative association with TNF-α of the hippocampus, highlighting regulatory effects of gut bacteria on memory potential and gut barrier. These results suggested the psychoactive effects of BS15 on fluoride-induced memory dysfunction after psychological stress. In addition, there may be some correlations between fluoride-induced memory dysfunction and reconstruction of gut microbiota. To investigate the effects of Bacillus methylotrophicus SY200 on Salmonella typhimurium (STM) infection in mice, a total of 36 three-week-old male mice were selected and randomly divided into 3 equal groups (N = 12). Group A and group B were fed with basal diet while group C was fed the basal diet supplemented with 0.1% (w/w) B. methylotrophicus SY200 during the 21 days experimental period. On the 14th day of the experiment, mice of group A were intragastrically administered with 0.5 ml of normal saline, group B and C were orally administered with 0.5 ml of STM suspension. On the first day and seventh day after STM challenge, the number of total white blood cells (WBCs) and neutrophils, relative weight of visceral organs, the number of Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli, Lactobacillus spp. and Bifidobacterium spp. in ileum and cecum, and diversity of cecal microflora were measured. The results showed that: on the first day and seventh day after STM challenge, the number of WBCs and neutrophils in the blood of the mice was the highest in group B, then followed by group C, and group A. On the first day after STM challenge, the relative weight of spleen in group C was significantly higher than that in group B (p < 0.05), moreover, compared with group B, B. methylotrophicus SY200 significantly reduced the number of Salmonella spp. and E. coli (p < 0.05), and increased the number of Lactobacillus spp. and Bifidobacterium spp. (p < 0.05) in the intestines of mice, and improved the Shannon-Wiener diversity (H), Simpson (E) and richness (S) indices of cecal flora of mice (p < 0.05). The results indicated that B. methylotrophicus SY200 could alleviate the inflammatory reaction after STM infection and resist the adverse effects of STM infection on mice intestinal flora.

BACKGROUND: Angiosarcoma is an aggressive and malignant neoplasm. Primary hepatic angiosarcoma is extremely rare and accounts for only approximately 5% of all angiosarcomas. Therefore, many doctors do not know enough about this disease; this lack of knowledge motivated us to perform this study. METHODS: We carried out a systematic review of the literature published worldwide from 1990 to 2019 to study the main characteristics, demographics, treatment and prognosis of primary hepatic angiosarcoma. RESULT: A total of 219 patients were included in this study. Patients were mainly middle-aged and elderly at diagnosis, with an average age at onset of 56.7 years. The vast majority of patients (61.5%) presented with abdominal pain or distension. Of 143 patients with clear records of metastasis, 31.5% (45 patients) had distant metastasis. The median overall survival time was only 6 months, and the 1- and 2-year survival rates were 30.4 and 17.3%, respectively. Sex, age, tumor size and metastasis at diagnosis showed no correlation with survival rate. Hepatic rupture was a significant predictor of survival. Surgery is a major treatment choice, and adjuvant chemotherapy can improve the prognosis of patients. Hepatic artery embolization is mainly used in cases of tumor rupture. However, liver transplantation is not advised. CONCLUSION: We presented an overview of the demographics, tumor characteristics and treatment outcomes of the largest number of primary hepatic angiosarcoma patients investigated to date. We highlight the use of routine physical examinations and surgery combined with adjuvant chemotherapy to improve the outcomes in these cases.

Numerous studies have shown that probiotic Bacillus could promote growth and enhance anti-disease ability in animal. In present study, the mixture of three Bacillus strains, which were isolated from rex rabbits and showed high cellulose, protease, and amylase activities, was added into the diet for investigating its effects on young and weaning rex rabbits. For experiment 1, 40 young rex rabbits (9 weeks old) were randomly divided into four groups and fed with diets containing 0 (NC), 1.0 × 105 cfu/g (LC), 1.0 × 106 cfu/g (MC), and 1.0 × 107 cfu/g (HC) Bacillus strains for 4 weeks. For experiment 2, 80 weaning rex rabbits (5 weeks old) were randomly divided into four groups and fed with diet containing 0 (control), 1.0 × 105 cfu/g (T-1), 1.0 × 106 cfu/g (T-2), and 1.0 × 107 cfu/g (T-3) Bacillus strains for 8 weeks. The results showed that Bacillus strains at a dose of 1.0 × 106 cfu/g significantly enhanced growth performance, increased immune organ indexes, improved serum biochemical parameters, and heightened antioxidant capacity. It also markedly improved the intestinal microbiota by increasing Lactobacillus spp., Bacillus spp. counts, and decreased Escherichia coli count. In addition, the Bacillus mixture raised the concentrations of acetic acid, propionic acid, and butyric acid as well as protease, amylase, and cellulase activities of young and weaning rex rabbits. Moreover, for weaning rex rabbits, the inclusion of Bacillus strains also upregulated the abundance of cellulolytic bacteria and improved intestinal morphology. Therefore, our results indicated that Bacillus strains could facilitate the growth of young and weaning rex rabbits by improving digestive function and anti-disease ability. KEY POINTS: • Bacillus with high extracellular enzyme activity were isolated from rex rabbits. • Bacillus could improve growth performance of young and weaning rex rabbits. • The digestive function of young and weaning rex rabbits could be improved by Bacillus.
